Dear readers,
As a father of seven children, I've stumbled upon some unexpected lessons about the joys and challenges of fatherhood, all while realizing the immense importance of dads in their kids' lives. Here's a lighthearted take on these revelations:
Let's face it— sometimes being a dad is like trying to juggle spaghetti while riding a unicycle. One of the earlier lessons I learned is that dads are human jungle gyms. From piggyback rides to impromptu wrestling matches, we're the go-to playground equipment for our kids. I've perfected my "horsey ride" technique and have the bruises to prove it!
Another crucial insight: dads are the unofficial chief jokesters in the family circus. Whether it's mastering the art of dad jokes or perfecting silly faces, we've got to keep the comedy flowing to maintain our status as the household laugh factory. After all, who else will turn mundane chores into a game of "who can fold laundry the fastest?"
But amidst the laughter, there's a serious lesson—fathers are vital anchors in a child's life. We provide stability and a sense of security that's as comforting as a warm blanket on a winter night. I've realized that showing up—physically and emotionally—is half the battle. Even if I'm clueless about the latest TikTok dance, just being there to listen and support means the world to my kids.
And let's not forget the importance of setting a good example. As a dad, for better or worse, I'm a role model for my children. Suddenly, my every move is under scrutiny. Did I just hear my own words parroted back to me? It's both terrifying and heartwarming to see my little ones imitate my actions and attitudes.
Fatherhood has taught me that it's okay to embrace chaos. Life with kids is like navigating a perpetual whirlwind of spilled juice, lost socks, and impromptu science experiments in the kitchen. Through it all, I've learned to roll with the punches and cherish the beautiful chaos that defines our family life.
In summary, being a dad is a wild rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected twists and turns. But amid the chaos and laughter, the lessons learned are crystal clear: fathers are essential pillars of love, laughter, security, and life lessons in their children's world. And I wouldn't trade this crazy journey for anything else!
Happy Father’s Day!

Teresa ApuzzoMEET THE REMARKABLE GENTLEMEN SHAPING SMYRNA VININGS THROUGH ENTREPRENEURSHIP, COMPASSION, AND UNWAVERING COMMITMENT TO OUR COMMUNITY.
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALANA WICKHAMIn the vibrant community of Smyrna Vinings, a select group of influential gentlemen have distinguished themselves not just through their professional accomplishments, but by their unwavering dedication to uplifting those around them. From restaurant owners who have become pillars of support to a pediatric dentist championing excellence and compassion, these remarkable individuals exemplify the values that make Smyrna Vinings a truly special place to call home. Their stories inspire others to use their talents and influence to make a positive impact, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the entire community.
Randy Carmichael, the late patriarch of Carmichael Funeral Homes, left an indelible mark on the Smyrna Vinings community through his unwavering commitment to serving others with dignity and respect. His son, Jim Carmichael, fondly recalls the lessons instilled from a young age, with Randy demanding meticulous attention to even the most minute details.
“It did not matter if you were worth $15 million or 15 cents, you would be treated with dignity and respect,” Jim states, reflecting his father’s core principles in business. Randy’s impact, however, extended far beyond the funeral home’s walls. In the weeks following his passing, Jim was inundated with stories of Randy’s quiet acts of kindness – helping families in need with groceries, rent, and more, without seeking recognition.
A 50-year member of the Smyrna Rotary Club with perfect attendance, Randy’s memory was as renowned as his character. He could vividly recollect details from decades-old services, providing immense comfort to grieving families. Above all, Randy’s most significant contribution was simply being there whenever needed. As Jim reflects, “Folks knew that if they called at 3 in the morning, Randy would be there to help them.” A life defined by service, fairness, and an uncompromising ethical code - this is how the influential Randy Carmichael will be remembered.

When Rusty Hamlin isn’t cooking up southern favorites at Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar, he’s giving back to the Smyrna/Vinings community that has supported him for over two decades.
A Louisiana native and graduate of the Louisiana Culinary Arts Academy, Hamlin’s passion for traditional southern cuisine brought him to Atlanta in 1996. After honing his skills at top local restaurants, he co-founded the beloved Atkins Park in 2001. Beyond serving up award-winning food and drinks, Hamlin ensures his restaurant is an active part of the community fabric.
“We pride ourselves on being a community restaurant and bar,” Hamlin says. Atkins Park sponsors local sports teams, donates to charities, and partners with organizations like the Kiwanis Club. During COVID-19, they turned their kitchen into a community operation, providing over 5,000 meals to Smyrna residents. Hamlin’s business partner sits on the city’s development committee as well.
“We have strong roots here after 21 years. We feel strongly about giving back and supporting those who support us,” Hamlin said. “We want to see everyone in our community flourish.”
The dedicated family man tries to instill the same values of kindness, respect, work ethic and passion that his father passed down. He frequently brings his son Briggs to the restaurant.
“I love watching his face light up seeing what his daddy creates,” Hamlin said. “Showing him the hard work and sacrifices to chase your dreams should be fun and something you absolutely love.”

Dr. Jaha Howard wears many hats - board certified pediatric dentist, business owner of A+ Pediatric Dentistry of Atlanta, community leader, father, and now candidate for Cobb County Commissioner. His accomplished background is driven by a deep commitment to service and family.
After growing up in Atlanta and studying at Howard University, Dr. Howard was excited to pursue pediatric dentistry. He credits his wife Vanessa for supporting their family while he completed residency, and they opened A+ Pediatric Dentistry with little funds initially. “I’m forever grateful that Vanessa was able to support our family while the office got off the ground,” he shares.
From the beginning, it meant a lot to the Howards to foster authentic relationships with their community - neighbors, schools, sports teams. “Our office motto, ‘Excellence and Compassion,’ truly keeps us centered on expressing genuine love for our families,” Dr. Howard says.
This community-minded approach comes from their faith and belief that “genuine love comes with action.” He has served on the Cobb County Board of Education and Transit Advisory Board, using his platform to be “part of the solution” for local challenges.
As a father of three, Dr. Howard aims to model positive character and values. “I do my best to appreciate their uniqueness and encourage them to imagine a better world and their role in it,” he says.
His advice for fellow fathers? “Make the most of each day by truly believing in the greatness inside every child.”
Through his dental practice, civic engagement, and parenthood, Dr. Jaha Howard and his wife Vanessa exemplify using one’s talents and influence to uplift the community with excellence and compassion.

Max Angel’s journey to becoming a beloved community leader in Smyrna Vinings began when his family relocated from Mexico to Atlanta in the early 1980s. Working at some of Georgia’s first Mexican restaurants, he gained invaluable experience before opening the original Los Bravos in Marietta in 1990. Now with seven locations across metro Atlanta, the restaurant has become a local staple known for delicious Mexican cuisine and a festive atmosphere.
When Angel took over the Smyrna location in 2001, he immediately immersed himself in supporting local schools, sports teams, and community initiatives. “When I see parties from different schools coming into Los Bravos, it motivates me to give back in every way I can,” he says. Angel’s commitment to education and creating a healthy community through sports is evident in his generous support of foundations and team sponsorships.
As a father himself, Angel strives to instill positive values in his own children. His advice to other dads? “Realize how special your community is and take pride in being part of it. Find ways, whether through your business or personally, to make a meaningful impact.”
Max’s influence extends well beyond the restaurant. “Realizing how Smyrna/Vinings has grown into a beautiful city makes me proud to be a part of it,” he explains. Through his entrepreneurial success, community leadership, and devoted fatherhood, Max Angel has become an inspiring presence in the area he calls home.

Bobby Young, owner of FullScope Sports and this year’s Smyrna Business Association’s Person of the Year, is a shining example of an influential gentleman making a positive impact in Smyrna Vinings.
After spending 25 years in corporate America, Bobby decided to open FullScope Sports - the first boutique-style run specialty and sporting goods store in Smyrna. This allowed him to stay rooted in the Atlanta area with his family.
FullScope Sports has indeed become a pillar of the community, partnering with initiatives like Smyrna Elementary’s Girls on the Run, the Campbell High School Giving Closet, and the local Boys and Girls Club. “I believe in giving back and leaving the world better,” says Bobby, who has coached Smyrna Little League for 17 years and Rhyne Park Fastpitch Softball for over 5 years.
As a local business leader, Bobby feels it’s extremely important to support and collaborate with the community. Being named SBA Person of the Year is an honor, though he gives back selflessly. “I don’t volunteer for recognition, but it feels good knowing your community appreciates you.”
Being a father to a 10-year-old daughter, Bobby strives to model the values and life lessons he hopes to instill. “Be the change! Stay focused, treat people like you want to be treated, and try to leave this place better than you found it,” he advises. “I love our community and want to see the best to come out of it. Let’s go and be great together!”

If you or your partner are among the millions of people who suffer from chronic snoring, it’s time to take action. Snoring can have a major impact on your sleep quality, daytime energy levels, and even your overall health. Fortunately, there are effective solutions available.
According to Dr. Aja Gilmore Nichols, a leading expert in sleep dentistry, the most common causes of snoring are sleep apnea and an underdeveloped airway or jaw. “Tiredness, weight gain, and unfavorable sleeping positions can make things worse,” she explains.
The good news is that there are ways to address the root cause of the problem. Dr. Nichols says the most effective treatment is oral appliance therapy, which can actually fix the structural issues causing the snoring. “This therapy is much less invasive than surgery, which is another option to correct the underlying anatomy,” she notes.
Expert advice on treating the root causes of snoring to improve sleep quality and overall health for you and your partner.

Other snoring remedies include devices that pull the lower jaw forward, nasal strips, and CPAP machines. However, Dr. Nichols emphasizes that these treatments only manage the symptoms rather than solving the problem long-term.
When evaluating patients, Dr. Nichols takes a comprehensive approach. “I use home sleep screenings, 3D imaging of the jaws and airway, and digital dental scans to really understand what’s going on,” she says. “Then I work with each patient to find the right solution for their unique needs and goals.”
Addressing snoring isn’t just about finding relief for the person making the noise. It can have a profound impact on the health and wellbeing of the snorer’s sleeping partner as well. “Consistent lack of quality sleep can lead to a whole host of issues, from daytime fatigue to increased risk of health problems,” Dr. Nichols warns.
She’s excited about the advancements being made in snoring treatment, particularly the non-invasive oral appliances that can effectively treat even severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). “In many cases, we can essentially ‘cure’ the sleep apnea in 18-24 months with these appliances,” she says. “That’s life-changing for patients who don’t want surgery or can’t tolerate CPAP.”
Dr. Nichols’ advice for anyone struggling with snoring is to take it seriously and seek professional help. “Snoring is not normal and shouldn’t be ignored,” she stresses. “It could be a sign of an underlying health issue. The good news is, we have solutions that can dramatically improve your sleep and your quality of life.”
So if snoring is keeping you or your partner from getting the rest you need, it’s time to take action. With the right treatment approach, you can reclaim your sleep and your health.

BY BECCA MCCOYMEET TWO SMYRNA ARTISTS USING OLD TECHNIQUES FOR NEW REVELATIONS
As the world around us changes, artists answer the call to give form to introspection, and through their work, we can investigate and interpret the human condition. Smyrna is home to two such artists, exploring our evolving relationship with technology, consumerism, objects, and time. They implement two different visual arts mediums: Saul Hernandez Quinarez paints and Olu Amoda works in sculpture. But they both tackle modern human experiences with a mastery of ancient artistic techniques. Techniques they mastered through extraordinary work ethic and discipline. Olu works in his shop five days a week, eight hours a day. Saul has painted every day for the last decade. Their resulting bodies of work have earned them the respect of their peers, many satisfied clients, and international recognition.
CONTINUED >
Saul Hernandez Quinarez with his work Saul Hernandez Quinarez“I don’t describe myself as prolific, but I work a lot,” says Olu, outside his workshop in Alpharetta. He repurposes objects to tell new stories, while allowing the source materials to retain their history. His process can be an additive or a subtractive approach, utilizing scraps or detritus. He reflects on the origins of his found materials and enjoys creating a “forensic problem” by fusing together elements of different timestamps. When the idea is out of his head and in physical form, Olu says, “Then we can start having a conversation.”
Saul refers to his work as “Progressive Paintings,” infusing our relationship with technology into fine art realism. That juxtaposition gives the work an element of surprise. For Saul, every creation starts with an idea, or a “problem,” and the painting becomes the solution. He practices in all mediums from his Smyrna home studio, but his work is in oil paints. “To be an artist is a way to live. It is more than just painting pictures.”
For Olu, while the execution of a piece may take one to two weeks, “some of these objects stayed with me for close to a year waiting for the moment to be part of a sculpture.” Saul estimates a painting takes him 20-50 hours to complete, and he only works on one piece at a time. “You can feel it when it’s done,” Saul says. “When that thing you want to say is said.”
Both artists are buoyed by their families and communities. For Saul, Atlanta Artists Center has been a source of connection and affirmation. Olu credits Vinings Lake Church with being “instrumental in how I process things.” And they are both motivated by a desire for deeper understanding. “The more I learn,” says Saul, “the more I realize I don’t know.”
Saul Hernandez Quinarez is a fine art oil painter originally from Mexico. His work is in the personal collection of Catherine Zeta-Jones and has been featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia Locally, he has won numerous awards from Atlanta Artists Center and was juried into Metro Montage at Marietta Cobb Museum of Art. Follow him on Instagram @saulhernandezq.
Olu Amoda is a multi-media artist and sculptor of repurposed materials originally from Nigeria. His work is included in many prestigious art collections including the Newark Museum and Fondation Blachère. Locally, he was the 2022 winner of the Hudgens Prize and featured in ArtAround: Pathways in the City of Roswell. Follow him on Instagram @wotaside_studio.

For Tomathan McGinnis, SAG-E actor, model, professional chef, and owner of Kitchen Bonez catering, the secrets to stellar grilling lie in patience and preparation. “Don’t rush – preheat the grill fully and let meats rest before grilling to lock in juices,” he advises. Proper food safety practices like separating raw items and using a thermometer are also key.
Tomathan’s grilling recipes showcase the vibrant flavors of his Texas farm upbringing under the guidance of his great-grandmother Josie and grandmother Joyce. “Growing up, we were rich in land and food – it sparked my love of fresh, seasonal ‘farm-to-table’ cooking,” he explains. The salad, grilled vegetable, and smoked meat dishes allow the natural tastes of just-picked produce and wood-fired proteins to shine.
A beloved accent like dill evokes nostalgia too. “I’d bury my nose in my great-grandmother’s herb garden as a kid,” Tomathan fondly recalls. “Dill was always my favorite aroma.” By enhancing simple, high-quality ingredients through masterful yet unfussy techniques, Tomathan transports guests to his family’s idyllic country kitchen. His deep appreciation for wholesome, handcrafted cuisine ensures these grilling recipes deliver pure, soul-satisfying flavor.

ingredients for dill butter garlic sauce:
• 60g butter

2. Finely chop shallots and garlic, whisk in a bowl with the other ingredients. Add the cleaned prawns, mix until well coated. Cover the dish and marinate in the fridge for 1-3 hours or overnight.
3. Remove from the fridge 30 minutes before grilling. Grill for 5-7 minutes.
4. Make the Dill Garlic Butter sauce:
• Heat butter in a small saucepan on the grill.

GREEK GRILLED “DILLY” DILL COUSCOUS SALAD
ingredients:
• 2 cups pearl couscous
• 2 1/2 cups vegetable broth
• 1/2 red onion, diced
• 1 cup halved grape tomatoes
• 3 English cucumbers, diced
• 1 cup toasted chickpeas, drained and patted dry
• 3 ears corn, grilled
• 1 cup feta cheese
• 1 cup Kalamata olives
• 2 tbsp chopped mint
ingredients for “dilly” salad dressing:
• 1 cup Greek yogurt
• Juice and zest of 3 lemons
• 1/2 cup fresh dill
• 1 tsp Dijon mustard
• 2 tsp Sisi Lola’s Greek seasoning (no MSG)
directions:
1. In a medium saucepan, combine couscous and broth. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 8-10 minutes until the broth has evaporated. Remove from heat and transfer to a large bowl to cool to room temperature. Fluff to separate the grains.
2. To the cooled couscous, add diced cucumbers, red onions, olives, toasted chickpeas, grilled corn cut from the cob, mint, and feta cheese.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together Greek yogurt, lemon juice, zest, Dijon mustard, dill, and Sisi Lola’s Greek seasoning until well combined to make the “Dilly” salad dressing.
4. Pour the desired amount of dressing over the couscous salad and toss until well combined.
5. Sprinkle with crumbled feta cheese before serving.
Tomathan’s grilling recipes showcase the vibrant flavors and simple techniques from his upbringing on a Texas farm. Under the guidance of his great-grandmother Josie and grandmother Joyce, he learned to let fresh, seasonal ingredients shine by enhancing them with masterful yet unfussy methods. Accents like dill evoke nostalgia for his great-grandmother’s herb garden. By highlighting high-quality, wholesome ingredients through careful preparation, Tomathan crafts dishes that deliver pure, satisfying flavor. The wood-grilled prawns and dill-infused couscous salad are perfect for savoring the tastes of his family’s idyllic country kitchen at Father’s Day or summer gatherings.
