Journey Into SummerRoadtrip Style
Hello Scotch Plains and Fanwood! Welcome to the Explore Issue!
Many of us - if we had our way - would spend the rest of our days exploring. Seeking out the places we've yet to see, the stories we've yet to hear, and the people we’ve yet to meet.

As young women we had the freedom that comes with youth to do our fair share of exploring. One of our favorite memories together is a monthlong trip we took to Australia. As tourists, we killed it. We climbed the Sydney Bridge, drank wine across the vineyards of Melbourne, snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns and stargazed the celestial wonders of the Southern Hemisphere in the Outback. These memories live in our hearts and minds next to the equally happy memories of the many road trips we would take with our parents and sisters to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Seven people packed into the family station wagon; No seatbelts, no devices, and no GPS to navigate past summer traffic. We played games, sang songs, and anticipated the fun we would have once we arrived. The hot crowded car ride did not produce complaints, rather it added to the joy of that first jump into the clear crisp water of the lake. The lake of our childhood.
This issue is dedicated to the spirit of exploration, specifically the beautiful water-filled destinations that are a mere road trip away for our readership. Whether you set your GPS to the beach, the lake or a refreshing pool, we wish you happy trails with a side of Willie Nelson.
"On the Road Again. Goin' places that I've never been. Seein' things I may never see again. And I can't wait to get on the road again". Cheers!

WATER WATER EVERYWHERE
JOURNEY INTO SUMMER WITH A ROAD TRIP TO THESE FAMILY FAVORITE DESTINATIONS
ARTICLE BY TERRY AZAD AND SHARMILA
JAIPERSAUD | PHOTOGRAPHY AS NOTED

Lake George, widely known as the Queen of American Lakes, is 32-miles of crystal clear water surrounded by the picturesque Adirondack Mountains. Approximately 200 miles from Union County, NJ, Lake George has become the “happy place” for many families, spanning multiple generations. While Lake George Village is a tourist destination, one needs to travel only ten miles North to enjoy the quieter coves and beaches of Bolton Landing.
Sunrise over the lake
Scotch Plains residents John and Kim Russo have been enjoying Lake George since high school, and in 2014 purchased a second home in Bolton Landing next door to extended family. Now, their kids spend summer weeks with cousins, unplugging from devices in favor of family time on the boat, and game nights when the sun goes down. “It never gets old," says Kim. "Every day we wake up and want to do it all over again. Load up the boat, grab the floats. Maybe valet dock the boat at the Algonquin Restaurant for lunch”. While Lake George is certainly all about the lake, Bolton Landing's quaint downtown area offers local shops, boutiques, art galleries, and delicious restaurants. The atmosphere is laid-back, with rustic charm.
1. DINING:
The Algonquin Restaurant: One of the most popular restaurants in the area, known for its great food and beautiful setting.
The Bolton Landing Brewing Co.: For those who enjoy craft beer and a laid-back atmosphere. Fredericks: Known for their sandwiches, this is the perfect casual spot.

“It never gets old. Every day we wake up and want to do it all over again.”
2. LAKE LIFE:
Swimming. Fishing. Boating. Cliff Jumping. Water Skiing. Tubing. Wakeboarding. Floating. Kayaking. Paddle Boarding. Canoeing. Hiking. Camping. Fire Pits. Lawn Games. Hammocks. Dogs. Sunrises. Sunsets. Adirondack Chairs. Picnics. Barbeques. Ice Cream. Chess Games. Crossword puzzles. Favorite Books. Naps on the Dock. Family Games. Stargazing. More Ice Cream.
3. WHERE TO STAY:
The Sagamore Resort: Even if you're not staying at the Sagamore, it’s worth visiting. The historic resort offers a beautiful setting with stunning views of the lake. You can walk around the grounds, have a meal at one of their restaurants, or just enjoy the atmosphere. They also offer activities like golf, tennis, and boat rentals. For a more intimate experience, consider "Adirondack Rental by Owner" for a private home rental with the lake as your backyard for morning coffee and evening firepits.

Wildwood, NJ, is a classic Jersey Shore destination that is just over a two-hour drive from Union County, NJ.
Whether you are enjoying the arcades, going on a ride at one of 3 Morey’s piers, devouring Curly’s legendary fries, or taking a joyride on a historic tram car, Wildwood, New Jersey, embodies the best of the Jersey shore. Well-known for its blend of nostalgia and modern fun, Wildwood has something to offer every member of the family. From early morning whale watching tours, water, parks, and mini golf to some of the best ice cream you've had! For a more relaxed beach experience, away from the hustle-bustle of the boardwalk, check out Diamond Beach. There you’ll find expansive beachfront views, in a quiet and luxurious setting. Most of the beach there is private access, giving the experience a high end resort feel.
WHERE TO STAY:
For a more homey feel, vacation rentals like beachfront condos and cottages offer a cozy retreat for a longer stay. Enjoy time together with your group in a luxury private beach house like one of Casa di Amici’s two beautiful beach rentals (see inset picture). Walk to the beach or stay home to enjoy the many amenities like the private decks, dedicated garage parking, hot tubs and game room. Visit casadiamici.holidayfuture.com to make your booking today. Wildwood also has a range of short stay accommodations, from budget motels to beachfront resorts. For a nostalgic, retro experience, check out the Wildwood Inn, a mid-century modern hotel close to the beach and boardwalk. If you prefer more luxurious amenities, The Pan American Hotel offers beautiful pools, easy beach access, and family-friendly services.

“Oh those
Wildwood Days.”
WHERE TO EAT:
Wildwood is full of casual and family-friendly dining spots. For classic boardwalk fare, try Sam's Pizza , known for its delicious thin-crust pizza. If you're craving seafood, The Crab House offers an incredible view along with fresh catches like crabs and clams. For breakfast, head to The Wildwood Diner , a local favorite serving hearty American breakfasts. If you're looking for a quick bite while strolling the boardwalk, the iconic Curley's Fries is a must. Scotch Plains residents and Wildwood enthusiasts, the JaipersaudVirmani family pictured here, recommend Hassles on 19th and Boardwalk for the best ice cream, and the Fractured Prune for amazing hand-dipped, unique flavored donuts. Visit Captain Jack’s if you’re in the mood for a fishbowl sized drink. For the best restaurants around the Island, check out Carini’s Italian Restaurant, Urie’s Waterfront, or The Salty Mermaid!
Don’t forget to catch the fireworks every Friday night during the Summer! Oh, Those Wildwood Days!

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR DENISE MATERIA RETIRES FROM THE MOUNT AFTER 40 YEARS

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE DAINO
While shopping at the old Sears department store across Route 22 in Scotch Plains, a 22-year-old Denise Materia stared up at Mount Saint Mary Academy in wonderment, her eyes full of admiration and curiosity. The building seemed to be a beacon of something new, something promising, a place full of hope. “I was mesmerized by it,” said Denise. “I could have never imagined the path that my life would have taken after that day.”
In 1984, Denise was hired as the Academy’s new Physical Education and Health Teacher and only one year later, she became the youngest Athletic Director in the state of New Jersey. Her belief in the Mount, and the community that welcomed her, gave her the determination to make the Academy top-of-mind in the world of high school athletics. Building the athletic department became her mission: Adding new sports, fixing and developing facilities, and being able to watch athletes compete under the MSMA title are just a few of her accomplishments. But it was bringing the Angels of Victory Field to fruition, together with Sister Lisa Gambacorto, RSM, Ed.S., Directress, that was a dream come true. “Denise has been the guiding light of our athletic department for almost 40 years. Her leadership and dedication, not only to athletics, but all things Mount, has been instrumental in the success of our athletic and activities program. She has modeled for our students – women’s leadership, sportsmanship, and what it means to play fair – making them better athletes and women," says Sister Lisa. "She leaves behind a legacy of impact on the athletic program and the school."

LOCAL VETS DISCOVER THEIR MUSICAL TALENTS AND A NEW WAY TO HEAL

VOICES OF VALOR
On the evening of February 10, 2025, ten brave combat veterans gathered in a conference room at Lyons VA Medical Center, where many of them also live. They are from different backgrounds and generations but the bonds formed between them are clear. Friends and family are also there, to support their loved one in their ongoing journey to heal. But, how do we heal? That is the question that brings them to this room. That is the question they are here to answer.
participants, along with their friends and family. Tonight, they will hear their song, “How do We Heal?” for the first time. They will also be awarded Commemorative Coins and CDs, presented to them by Music for All Seasons Executive Director, Rena Fruchter.
The anticipation in the room is high as they sit down to discuss their personal experiences before the song they wrote and performed is played. The group talks about the tremendous
“I SEE A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE LIKE ME. BROKEN LIKE ME. PERFECT
Approximately eight weeks earlier, this same group started on a journey together. They signed up to participate in Voices of Valor, one of the many programs offered by Music for All Seasons, located in Scotch Plains. The Voices of Valor program brings small groups of veterans together with two professional musicians and a psychology mentor for ninety minutes weekly over a period of eight weeks. The musicians do not perform for the veterans, rather they serve as facilitators guiding the group to use their shared experiences to write the lyrics to a group song. The lyrics are then set to music, performed, and recorded in a professional studio (in this case they recorded at Sound on Sound Studios located in Montclair, NJ). The final session for the group is a CD release party during which the finished product is presented for the
LIKE ME.”
impact it has had on their healing journey. John, an Iraqi War Army veteran, describes it as a “once-in-a-lifetime experience.” He credits the caliber of the musicians brought in to facilitate the program as having changed his life forever. “I’m never going to forget this group. I am never going to forget this song,” he says.
The two musicians, Ron Haney and David Rimelis, do in fact bring impressive credentials to the table. David’s music has been performed by orchestras nationally and internationally, including the Boston Pops, National Symphony, and the New York pops. Ron is a NJ born Grammy-nominated guitarist, bassist, producer, songwriter and founding member of the band The Churchills. He has toured and performed with the likes of Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, and Bono.
“THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE. ”
Still, he credits the realization of a song from start to finish with these veterans as one of his most rewarding musical and life experiences.
Ron starts the discussion by saying, “I don’t see a room full of veterans. I see a room full of people like me. Broken like me. Perfect like me”. Veteran Tom shares his gratitude as well saying, “I always wanted to do something creative but I was too busy beating myself up to do it.” Then there is Hector, who generates laughter when he admits he joined the group because of the free pizza every week. Ultimately, he gained so much more: “It was the most beautiful experience for me,” he says. Participating in this process allowed them a chance to step outside of their comfort zones, take some chances and practice self compassion.
When the song is played there is joy, there are tears. The white sheets of paper they used to write potential lyrics hang on the wall as a reminder of the process that brought them to this culminating moment.

“As the day breaks, time to move a mountain”
“Grieving who I used to be, my mind is now the enemy”
“Every day I wake up in the dark and I pray for the light”
“How Do We Heal?” is so much more than a song. It is therapy. And it is beautiful.
Music for all seasons was founded by husband and wife, Brian Dallow and Rena Fruchter. Having met at Brandeis University in 1967 the two students of music fell in love, married and enjoyed over 55 years of marriage and partnership before Brian’s passing in 2024. They co-founded Music for All Seasons in 1991 to bring the therapeutic power of live music to underserved facilities including hospices, shelters, foster homes, geriatric centers and veterans hospitals. Their groundbreaking initiative, Voices of Valor, has been operating since the spring of 2011 and is tailored to help military veterans through trauma by engaging professional musicians to provide interactive music experiences as a part of the healing process.
Please visit the Voices of Valor website where you will be moved by the honesty and power of the words and music of the remarkable men and women who have given so much in the form of service to our country. Please consider attending, or donating to, the Music for All Seasons Gala being held on the evening of November 10th at the Liberty House in Jersey City. All proceeds will go towards the many healing programs provided by Music for All Seasons.

Brian Dallow passed away July 2, 2024 after serving as Co-Founder and Executive Director of Music for All Seasons for over 30 years. Brian was a strong, creative, and brilliant leader who devoted his life to healing through music. He was instrumental in launching Voices of Valor®, committed to helping military veterans heal their trauma through song writing. He was a gifted pianist, composer and educator. His wife of over 55 years, and MFAS Co-Founder, Rena Fruchter, is also a distinguished pianist, writer and educator. Her performances have taken her around the world in both solo and ensemble appearances. She toured with long-time friend and colleague Dudley Moore, who also served as the Founding MFAS Advisory board President from 1991 - 2002.
