As the year winds to a close, I find myself asking, “How is it November already?” Time has a way of slipping past us more quickly with each passing year. And yet, in those fleeting moments, I’m reminded to pause, to reflect, and to feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude—for what has been provided, for the blessings we’ve shared, and for the promise of what lies ahead.

We live in a world that moves fast and often feels clouded by the headlines of the day. But here in the Santa Ynez Valley, gratitude isn’t hard to find. It’s woven into the fabric of our community—whether in the generosity of neighbors, the beauty of our landscapes, or the countless ways people give of their time and their hearts.
This issue is inspired by that spirit of thankfulness. If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year, congratulations—you are opening your home to a holiday filled with joy, aroma, and tradition (and yes, maybe just a little stress). To help ease the process, we’ve included Thanksgiving Hosting Hacks (pg 14)—small touches that make gathering all the more memorable.
We also highlight organizations that embody gratitude in action. Angel’s Foster Care (pg 18) introduces us to families opening their homes to our county’s most vulnerable children, offering not just shelter but love. The Santa Barbara County Veterans Foundation (pg 26) invites us to honor those who have served through their 5th Annual Salute to the Vets. This event reminds us of the sacrifices made for community and country. And in Grateful Harvest (pg 34), we shine a light on Veggie Rescue, a remarkable local nonprofit turning surplus produce into nourishment for thousands of families across our region.
Throughout this season, I hope you find not only inspiration but also gentle reminders of what makes this valley so extraordinary: generosity, resilience, and connection. May this season be filled with gratitude for the past, joy in the present, and hope for what’s to come.
Go Pirates!
Cheers,

November 2025

Let’s face it: hosting Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful.
Between grocery shopping, house cleaning, cooking and baking, it’s no wonder the day devoted to giving thanks can feel a tad daunting.
Here’s some very welcome good news: whether this is your first holiday hosting rodeo or you’ve stuffed many a turkey over the years, you can knock out most of the Thanksgiving meal prep work in advance – some of it two weeks before the big day.
To make this year’s Thanksgiving meal easier and more enjoyable, consider the following timeline of tips.

Create Your Thanksgiving Menu
• Print out the recipes you plan to use – this will be much easier than constantly tapping your phone to prevent the screen from going dark or scrolling when your hands are covered with flour or onions.
• Using your menu and printed out recipes as a guide, compose a complete shopping list.
• Double check your supply of herbs and spices to see what you have on hand – even the ones you are pretty sure you have enough of, like salt and pepper (this tip comes from personal experience!).
• Shop for all non-perishable and frozen food items. Basically, if it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge, or if it doesn’t have a short shelf life, it’s going in the cart.
• Plan three easy and tasty dinners for the days leading up to Thanksgiving and purchase those ingredients during your shopping trip. Or plan at least one night of takeout.
Clean & Organize, Buy Fresh Groceries
• Clean your home completely, enlisting family members to help. Then, as the big day approaches, you can touch up as needed.
• Finish your grocery shopping for fresh vegetables like potatoes, onions and carrots and other items not purchased earlier.
• Go through your fridge and toss any old, expired condiments, leftovers and mysterious food items that no one is eating. This will free up valuable real estate for your various dishes.
Prep Meals & Set the Table
• Wash and chop all veggies and place the prepped produce into plastic baggies or airtight food storage containers. If some recipes call for “minced onion” and others require “chopped onion,” label the bags accordingly.
• Set the table, and include the empty serving dishes. This will help you figure out ahead of time where the larger dishes can go (and if they will all fit!) Add Post-It notes to the empty dishes to remind you what will go in what. Use a clean sheet to cover everything and keep it all dust-free until Thursday. You can also do this for a buffet.
• Gather all needed serving spoons and other serving pieces.
• Pre-measure herbs and spices for your recipes and store them in labeled small plastic bags with the name of the dish they are for and what’s in the baggies. You can also do the same for any flour, sugar or other non-perishable ingredients you’ll use in your dishes.
Tidy, Prepare Dishes & Drinks
• Do a quick clean and tidy around the home; for instance, run the vacuum and shine up the bathrooms.
• If you haven’t already done so, bake your pies, or, at the very least, prepare your pie dough. Wrap the dough in plastic and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to assemble and bake the pies.
• Make the mashed potatoes. Bonus tip: on Thanksgiving, put the potatoes into a slow cooker and heat them up using the “warm” setting.
• Prepare the gravy. If you have a second slow cooker, it too can be warmed up this way on Thanksgiving. This will also help free up pots, pans and burners on the stove!
• Set up a separate drink station where guests can help themselves or someone can serve them away from the kitchen. Stock it with glasses of different sizes, napkins, bottle and can openers and straws.

INSIDE ANGELS FOSTER CARE’S LIFE-CHANGING MISSION

Our goal is to give every child the love and stability they deserve…no matter how brief their stay
In 2006, Santa Barbara resident Meichelle Arntz saw the heartbreaking instability faced by children in foster care—babies and toddlers shuffled between homes, denied the chance to form secure bonds. Determined to create a better way, she founded Angels Foster Care of Santa Barbara County. Her vision was simple yet profound: provide the youngest children with safe, consistent homes until reunification or adoption. Nearly two decades later, Angels serves children not only in Santa Barbara, but also across the Santa Ynez Valley, Lompoc, and the Santa Maria Valley, offering hope and healing where it is needed most.
At the heart of Angels is a guiding principle: one child, one home, one consistent relationship. “Our goal is to give every child the love and stability they deserve…no matter how brief their stay,” says Elizabeth Moss, Angel’s Foster Care Interim Executive Director. Traditional foster systems often involve multiple moves, but Angels ensures that once a placement is made, children remain with that family until permanency is reached. Because the first years of life are
so critical, the organization focuses on children from birth to three, and sibling sets up to age five. Families are trained in trauma-informed care and supported by master’s level social workers, creating stability that fosters trust, emotional growth, and developmental milestones that might otherwise be lost.
What began as a single-focus foster family agency has grown to meet wider needs. Kinship placements support relatives who step in to care for children, preserving family connections. Post-adoption services extend the mission beyond foster care, ensuring families remain supported through every stage. This evolution has built a comprehensive network for children and caregivers across the Central Coast.
The impact speaks volumes. Since 2006, more than 329 children have been placed in Angels’ homes. Many have reunited with birth parents, while others have been adopted into forever families. Each of those numbers represents a life reshaped by stability, compassion, and the chance to thrive.
Behind these successes are the families, staff, and volunteers who make Angels possible. Angels resource

parents undergo rigorous screening and training and receive ongoing support every step of the way. Dedicated social workers, board members, and community volunteers uphold the highest standards of care, ensuring every child receives not just a home, but a true sanctuary.
Community support has always been vital to Angels’ mission. Fundraising events like the annual Al Fresco Luncheon, along with donations of baby gear, diapers, and local partnerships create a safety net for children who might otherwise fall through the cracks. Neighbors and friends alike help ensure that the youngest among us are given the stability they deserve.
However, the need continues. There are many ways to be part of the mission—by becoming an Angels resource parent, donating funds or supplies, volunteering time, or simply sharing Angels’ story. As longtime supporter Leanne Schlinger reflects, “Nothing tugs at my heartstrings quite like children in foster care. It is my absolute honor and pleasure to support Angels Foster Care, who ensure that children in need are placed in the most nurturing, safe and loving homes possible. Angels Foster Care is truly a gem to our community and the children they serve.” Get involved at angelsfostercare.org

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?
The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.
Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.
“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”
Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:
SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”
“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”
Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:
“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”
Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.
This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.
“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”
Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.
This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

ARTICLE BY HENRY SCHULTE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SANTA BARBARA COUNTY VETERANS FOUNDATION

Thirteen years ago, Jerry Farmer had an idea. He wanted to create something meaningful—an event that would both recognize and honor local veterans. That idea evolved into “Salute to the Vets.”
The very first gathering was held in the parking lot of the Breaktime Bar in Goleta. Jerry rounded up vintage military equipment, including a Huey helicopter, and drew a crowd that far exceeded expectations. The response confirmed what he already knew: there was a deep hunger in our community to show support for those who served.
After that first success, I suggested Jerry consider forming a nonprofit to help with fundraising. He jumped at the opportunity, and the Santa Barbara County Veterans Foundation (SBCVF) was born, with Jerry as president.
For the next decade, Salute to the Vets made its home at the Santa Barbara Carriage Museum, eventually joining forces with the Santa Barbara Veterans Parade. Attendance grew so large that parking became a challenge—not a bad problem to have. During those years, thousands of dollars were raised to benefit local groups, including the 42MM Veterans Group, American Veterans United, Santa Ynez Valley Community Outreach–Veterans Center, Welcome Home Military Heroes, AmVets, and Healing Heroes Through Horsemanship.
From the beginning, Jerry and I agreed the Foundation should remain lean, local, and community-focused. No one involved has ever taken a salary, and beyond basic event expenses, every dollar raised goes directly to veterans or organizations that serve them.

Like many events, the Salute to the Vets went quiet during the COVID-19 pandemic. By then, I had relocated to Santa Ynez, and Jerry and I decided it was time to shift the celebration north as well. In 2022, the event was relaunched at the Maverick Saloon with a parade through town. It was warmly received, but after two years, we felt something was missing.
In November 2024, Salute to the Vets moved to Solvang Park, and there, we knew we had found our permanent home. The central location exposed the event to a broader audience, including locals, families, and visitors alike. The energy was electric, and Solvang embraced the event as its own.
The SBCVF is about more than fundraising. At its heart, it is about recognition—keeping alive the stories of those who served, reminding us of the sacrifices made, and ensuring that veterans remain visible in our daily lives. Many endured injuries, PTSD, or paid the ultimate price so that we can enjoy our freedoms.
It is our duty—and our privilege—to honor them.

ADVICE EDITORIAL: ALTERNATE GIFT IDEAS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON
The holiday season is officially on, and gifting is top of mind. We’re all used to scrolling online, browsing the malls or hitting the local boutiques, but sometimes it’s fun and unexpected to switch it up. If looking to surprise and delight recipients this year and to bring a new tradition to the season, offbeat gifting can be a great way to turn a new leaf on stale routines.

1) PRE-HOLIDAY SURPRISE.
For those traveling, send gifts early, such as cheeses, fruit or pies.
2) FUTURE FUN.
Browse winter or spring events; snag tickets to enjoy with recipients.
3) GENEROSITY.
Donations make heartfelt, thoughtful ideas.
4) TRAVEL.
Gift a loved one with a trip.
5) TIME.
Is a recipient busy, overloaded and overworked? Treat them to a whole home cleaning before or after the holiday.
6) LOVE OF LEARNING.
If a loved one is planning international travel, grab them a gift card for a language learning app.
7) THOUGHTFUL MESSAGES.
Ask friends and family to record loving messages on cellphones; combine recordings using a video app for meaningful holiday greeting.
8) BON APPÉTIT.
Sign up special someone for cooking class regarding favorite cuisine, or cuisine they struggle to make.
9) RECIPE BOOK.
Gather traditional family recipes and create printed books for guests as priceless keepsakes.

Our local farms and backyard orchards yield more than enough to fill most tables. Yet, just beyond that abundance, many neighbors struggle to put fresh, healthy food on their own tables. Since 2010, Veggie Rescue has quietly bridged that gap—collecting surplus produce and delivering it, often on the same day, to schools, food pantries, senior centers, and shelters.
“Our mission has always been simple: take good food that would otherwise be wasted and get it to people who need it, quickly and safely,” says Eryn Shugart, executive director of Veggie Rescue.
Veggie Rescue began when Terry Delaney noticed fields of unharvested produce while families nearby went hungry. Armed with a pickup truck and a few volunteers, he began gleaning—collecting excess fruits and vegetables left in fields after harvest—and delivering them to local nonprofits. Fifteen years later, Veggie Rescue operates refrigerated trucks, employs trained drivers, and partners with over 60 organizations across SB County.
Terry and his wife, Holly, remain actively involved—volunteering at events, handing out carrots from Veggie Rescue’s truck in local parades, and more. Volunteers like Richard
Nagler and Linda Stafford Burrows continue to support the mission, while local farmers, including Shu Takikawa from The Garden Of and Helmut Klauer, now Tom Shepherd, of Folded Hills Farm, have donated since the very beginning. “Our farm and food donors are not just partners—they’re part of the family,” Shugart says.
Every “rescue” begins with a call—from a farm with surplus crops, a grocer with packaged goods, or a bakery with extra loaves. Routes are mapped for efficiency, and food is delivered within 24 hours to ensure freshness. “I’ll never forget delivering boxes of heirloom tomatoes from a farm’s bumper crop,” recalls Dave Roberts, program director. “Within 24 hours, they were on plates at senior centers and food pantries. People were so excited to have something fresh and beautiful.”
Roberts is also reviving Veggie Rescue’s gleaning program. “When people pick fruit themselves, they see firsthand where their food comes from—and they know they’re making a direct difference for someone else in their community,” he explains. Gleaning not only rescues food but also connects volunteers to the land and the cause.
In the first half of 2025 alone, Veggie Rescue recovered more than 330,000 pounds of food— the equivalent of 275,763 meals—saving families nearly $572,500. Behind those numbers are personal stories: a mother of three who can now serve fresh vegetables at dinner, and a senior who said deliveries brought not just nourishment but dignity and connection.
As Thanksgiving approaches, gratitude runs deep at Veggie Rescue. “We’re thankful for our donors, our volunteers, and our community partners,” Shugart reflects. “We couldn’t do this without them. Every call we get—whether from a farmer, a grocer, or a backyard grower—is someone choosing generosity over waste.”
But the need is urgent. In SB County, one in three residents struggles to afford basic necessities, and cuts to food programs are further straining families. Veggie Rescue is scaling up— rescuing more food, expanding partnerships, and recruiting more volunteers.
“Food waste doesn’t have to exist,” Roberts adds. “Every time we connect surplus food with someone who needs it, it’s a win for people, for farmers, and the planet.” For those of us fortunate to live in this valley of plenty, Veggie Rescue offers countless ways to give back—through donations, backyard harvests, sponsorships, or volunteer hours. As we gather around our own tables, Veggie Rescue reminds us that gratitude is best expressed through action.
