The Explore Issue

Growing up, summer meant one thing:  exploring. My brother and I spent countless days roaming our neighborhood with a pack of friends—riding bikes, playing epic games of hide and seek, and rigging up my dad’s construction lights so we could keep our driveway basketball games going long after sundown. I can still feel the heat of the pavement under my feet and remember the thrill of taking flight—Michael Jordanstyle—as we battled it out in 1-on-1 showdowns.

As I got older, those summer nights shifted into high school sports and, eventually, collegiate athletics. Summers meant double workouts, summer school, and the relentless pursuit of a national championship. And then, as it does for all of us, life moved forward. College ended, and the real world arrived—ready or not.

These days, it’s easy to fall into familiar routines. We frequent the same restaurants, coffee shops, and tasting rooms, slowly letting go of that childlike urge to explore. But summer still holds space for discovery—if we let it.

That’s the spirit behind this Explore issue.

We visit Off the Record, a local shop that invites us to rediscover the authenticity of music through vinyl (pg 28). We take a field trip to Summerset Farm to pick sun-ripened berries and soak up the season’s sweetness (pg 16). Brian O’Connor shares how he balances the demands of his legal career with a fierce commitment to fitness and movement (pg 22). Pam Gnekow gives us a look at this year’s Cars & Cowboys event, supporting SYV Community Outreach and hosted at the newly re-opened Rancho San Marcos Golf Course (pg 34).

And of course, what would summer be without something refreshing in hand? We’re cooling down with a crisp margarita recipe from the locally owned Angelisco Tequila—made for toasting sunny days and long, golden evenings (pg 40).

Whether you’re venturing down winding country roads or flipping a record and dancing in your living room, we hope this issue inspires you to reconnect with your sense of wonder and keep exploring—with open eyes, open ears, and an open heart. Go Pirates!

Cheers,

July 2025

Where the Taste of the Land Meets the Luxury of Simplicity

ARTICLE BY MATT DEMARCUS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JESSICA MAHER PHOTOGRAPHY

Tucked into the fertile folds of our Santa Ynez Valley, Summerset Farm is a portrait of pastoral elegance. Just off of Edison and 154, past the ancient oaks and golden grasslands, lies a working farm that offers something rare in today’s fast-paced world: an invitation to slow down. For nearly two decades, Summerset Farm has offered a multi-sensory escape—a place where heirloom tomatoes and sun-warmed berries taste of memory, and children dart through orchards as curious lizards scurry beneath their feet.

Founded by Alex Geremia, Summerset Farm is a labor of love—chemical free from its inception and grounded in a philosophy that blends sustainability, seasonality, and community. “The farm has always been 100% chemical free since the day Alex bought it 19 years ago,” explains general manager Sally Maher. “No herbicides, no pesticides, strictly non-GMO. That was the goal, and they’ve stuck to it.” Maher, who began helping out when her children were in school, has been part of the farm for 17 years. “I just never left,” she says with a laugh. That kind of devotion is woven into every aspect of the farm’s operation, from its 18 varieties of globally-sourced garlic to its handmade jams and honey harvested on-site.

The heart of the Summerset experience, however, lies in its immersive, seasonal offerings. “Probably the biggest thing is berry picking,” Maher says. “We have raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries. Our orchard has peaches, plums, and six kinds of apples. And people love picking their own sunflowers. The kids just adore exploring—it’s a big part of our operation.” In fall, the landscape transforms into a pumpkin-lover’s dream. Summerset’s annual pumpkin patch is more than just picturesque; it’s educational. “We host field trips from schools all over Santa Barbara County,” says Maher. “We show them what goes into growing food, and they get to take home a pumpkin.”

While the experiences attract families and day-trippers, Summerset Farm also caters to a discerning clientele seeking

“IT’S ABOUT TASTE, TRADITION, AND THE KIND OF BEAUTY THAT DOESN’T ASK FOR ATTENTION—IT EARNS IT.”

rustic luxury. Their farm stand bursts with freshly harvested vegetables—zucchini, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and onions—all laid out in charming displays. Shelves are lined with small-batch sauces and preserves. Their hand-crafted olive oils, pressed in small batches, add yet another layer of richness to the farm’s already abundant offerings. Handcrafted tote bags and glassware made by Maher’s daughter-in-law, Michaela, add a personal, artisanal touch.

For those looking to stay a little longer, The Farm House —Summerset’s private vacation rental—offers a refined take on agrarian life. With sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains and interiors that blend farmhouse warmth with upscale comfort, it’s a serene sanctuary perfect for romantic escapes or family getaways.

Like many small farms, Summerset has weathered its share of challenges. The recent completion of a nearby roundabout project, which had previously limited access, marks a new chapter. “We’re focused on getting back to business as usual,” says Sally. “We want to maximize what we have and hopefully grow next year.”

Growth at Summerset Farm isn’t just measured in produce or profits—it’s felt in connection. It’s in the laughter of children

in the berry fields, the satisfaction of tasting a peach plucked fresh from the tree, or the simple pleasure of wandering through rows of sunflowers with the summer breeze in your hair. It also cannot be understated how much better everything tastes when you know exactly where it came from. When you or your children are snacking on an apple from a strictly nonGMO and no pesticide farm, it puts your mind at great ease to know the produce from Summerset tastes better and is much

better for you than something purchased at the big chain grocery store.

Summerset Farm isn’t trying to be trendy. It’s not about flashy agritourism or curated social media moments. It’s about authenticity—what Maher calls “the real stuff.” It’s about taste, tradition, and the kind of beauty that doesn’t ask for attention—it earns it.

So, whether you’re coming for the berries, the varietal honey, or the sense of stillness that only open land can offer, one thing is certain: Summerset Farm is the kind of place you carry with you, long after the last apple is picked.

Summerset Farm is located at 3450 Baseline Avenue in Santa Ynez. Find them on social media, Instagram: @summersetfarm_syv, and their Facebook page.

EXPLORING THE BALANCE

ARTICLE BY SARA DEMARCUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LENA BRITT PHOTOGRAPHY

BETWEEN LAW, WELLNESS, AND COMMUNITY

In a field known for intensity, long hours, and emotional strain, trial attorney Brian O’Connor has spent nearly four decades exploring a rare equilibrium—balancing high-stakes litigation with personal wellness, deep-rooted community ties, and a sense of purpose that reaches beyond the courtroom.

Since settling in Santa Barbara County in 1987, O’Connor has been one of the region’s most respected voices in personal injury and medical malpractice law. But ask him what defines his success, and he won’t mention his case wins. He’ll talk about the people—the families, the friendships, the mentors and mentees—that shape his days.

He had just completed a foundational stretch in the DA’s office in Palm Springs, and a new opportunity pulled him to the Central Coast, where the ocean air and close-knit community proved the perfect setting for the next chapter. “When I came here, I knew this was the only place I wanted to live,” O’Connor says. “It felt like home immediately.” He spent the early part of his career on the defense side, representing hospitals, physicians, and insurance companies in high-stakes medical malpractice cases. That foundation gave him a deep understanding of the legal and medical systems—an experience he would later carry into a new chapter.

O’Connor spent his early Santa Barbara years defending hospitals, doctors, and insurance carriers in complex malpractice cases. But by 1996, he made a pivotal shift, starting his own practice and advocating for individuals and families affected by personal injury or medical negligence. “It’s complex, it’s nuanced, and it really matters.” Today, three-quarters of his cases are medical-related—an area few local attorneys pursue due to its difficulty and risk.

CONTINUED >

The cases are often heartbreaking: missed diagnoses, emergency room errors, birth injuries that leave lifelong consequences. “These aren’t just legal matters. They’re human stories,” he says. “That’s what drives me.”

His background gives him a rare dual perspective. “Most attorneys don’t have both trial experience and deep knowledge of the medical-legal landscape,” he notes. “That combination sets my practice apart.” With over 50 trials under his belt and extensive work in both defense and plaintiff litigation, O’Connor is uniquely positioned to understand the motivations, strategies, and sensitivities of all parties involved.

But technical knowledge is only part of the equation. O’Connor is known for his tenacity and deep empathy—traits that shine in cases where families are seeking answers after devastating outcomes. “He recalls a case in which a patient was discharged from an ER visit and tragically passed away just hours later—a moment that underscored for him the importance of medical accountability.” Another case involved a birth injury that led to permanent disabilities for a child, one of many instances where families faced enormous challenges navigating an already painful journey.

“These cases are emotionally intense. But they deserve to be heard,” he says. “They demand it.”

But the emotional and intellectual demands of his work require more than sharp legal acumen—they require balance. For O’Connor, that comes through movement, routine, and relationships.

A lifelong athlete, he’s completed multiple Ironman triathlons, including Kona in 1994 and the Nice France Ironman in 2009 and now shifting focus to more open water swims, such as swimming Alcatrez 8 times. When he’s not on the clock, you can usually find him at Frankie’s gym in Los Olivos, cycling with longtime friends, or swimming laps as he finds solace in the rhythm of endurance training. “That group I trained with— they’re still some of my closest friends. We used to ride from San Francisco to Santa Barbara every year. It kept us grounded.”

Today, he also devotes increasing time to mediation—a space where his trial experience and calm presence create trust on both sides of the table. He facilitates several mediations each month, often volunteering through the court system, and sees that aspect of his practice expanding in the years to come.

“Mediation is a way to resolve things with dignity. It’s where I think I can do a lot of good moving forward.”

O’Connor’s approach is guided by principle and rooted in connection. He doesn’t see his work as a fight against something, but rather a stand for something: dignity, healing, and the belief that every person deserves to be heard.

“It’s a privilege to do this work,” he reflects. “To step into someone’s story when they’re at their most vulnerable—and help them find a path forward.”

In a field that can often seem adversarial or isolating, O’Connor has carved out space for meaning, not just in the courtroom, but in the community he continues to serve with respect and resolve.

Off the Record

EXPLORE A WORLD WHERE THE BEAT DROPS WHEN THE NEEDLE DOES

ARTICLE BY BRIANNA HALEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT DEMARCUS

Tucked into the storybook charm of downtown Solvang, Off the Record Vinyl & Vintage is more than a record store—it’s a curated experience that bridges generations through music, design, and nostalgia. Located upstairs in Jensen’s Copenhagen Square, this family-run shop invites visitors to slow down, browse, and reconnect with the tactile joy of analog sound.

The shop was founded in May 2024 by father-and-son duo Mike and Vince Casey and was born from a pandemic-era passion project. Mike, a longtime film industry prop master, began amassing vintage audio gear during lockdown. Encouraged by his kids, who joked he had enough to open a store, he transformed a former stained-glass workshop into a retro haven. Together, Mike and Vince painted walls, built record racks, and curated a collection that now draws music lovers from across the Central Coast.

Inside, the shop is a feast for the senses. Rows of both new and used vinyl span genres from obscure jazz and classic rock

to contemporary artists like Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar. The inventory also includes 45s, cassettes, CDs, and a range of vintage and modern audio equipment from brands like Pioneer, Marantz, and Sansui. Beyond music, shoppers can discover band tees, retro barware, and other vintage treasures.

The ambiance evokes a bygone era. Concert posters and instruments adorn the walls, while vintage chairs and lighting fixtures create a cozy, lived-in feel. A nook by the window doubles as a stage for live music performances, a nod to Mike’s days working at Tower Records on Sunset Boulevard. “I remember the in-store concerts at Tower Records, and I loved them,” he recalls. Hosting local musicians was a natural extension of that legacy.

Off the Record appeals to a diverse clientele. While seasoned collectors appreciate the meticulously curated selection, younger visitors are discovering vinyl for the first time. Watching them discover the warmth of analog sound and the ritual of a needle drop is something Mike never tires of.

Mike believes vinyl endures because it offers something digital formats can’t: presence. From the album artwork to the subtle crackle between tracks, records invite listeners to engage deeply with music. In an age of streaming and instant gratification, Off the Record offers a sanctuary for intentional listening.

Whether you’re a longtime audiophile or a curious newcomer, Off the Record beckons you to explore music’s rich tapestry in a setting that celebrates the past while embracing the present.
