COLOMBIAN FASHION DESIGNER MAYGEL CORONEL VISITS MONTECITO
THE FALL EDIT
As September settles in, we find ourselves in a seasonal in-between. Summer lingers in the heat, yet our minds begin to shift toward fall.
Here, dressing for this time of year can feel like a challenge: linen or layers? Sandals or suede? This issue is here to help answer that, with a focus on timeless style, clean beauty, and intentional living.
Our cover subject, Colombian designer Maygel Coronel, brings us a fresh coastal elegance inspired by the Caribbean. She’s graced us with her presence with a boutique at The Post, and now she’s heading to LA to officially set up shop. Here, we celebrate her American debut in Montecito.
Our Fall Edit spotlights Renaissance Fine Consignment, a Santa Barbara staple proving sustainable fashion can be luxurious. Their expertly curated collections of designer clothes and accessories offer women a way to shop with intention, extending the life of iconic pieces and embracing circular fashion.
For beauty lovers, we’ve tapped Betsy Goehring of The Bets Life, a Santa Barbara-based lifestyle creator and former college athlete who has built a devoted audience with her style, both aspirational and relatable. Her beauty bests are a trusted source for those who want to look good and feel grounded.
And if you’re seeking something nourishing from the kitchen, this month’s featured recipe from Healthy Warrior is packed with flavor and nutrients.
Finally, we’re also proud to spotlight the incredible work of the Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, a local organization offering critical financial and emotional support to families facing pediatric cancer. Their annual Gold Ribbon Gala is one of Santa Barbara’s most meaningful nights—bringing our community together in compassion, hope, and celebration. We invite you to learn more, get involved, or simply show up in support of their mission.
Thank you for making Santa Barbara Coast part of your month. Whether you’re looking to refresh your wardrobe, your routine, or your mindset, we’re honored to be part of your journey.
Warmly,

While we love online shopping, there’s nothing like live shopping, when you can feel, try, and fall in love with something. Renaissance’s specialty merchandise includes coveted runway items and exclusive VIP bags, like the Hermès Birkin. This focus on rare and high-demand items attracts collectors and fashion enthusiasts looking for unique, hard-to-find luxury goods. Renaissance has a thorough cleaning and inspection process. They go above and beyond ensuring that all merchandise is meticulously cleaned and inspected before it is placed on the sales floor. This attention to detail enhances the beauty of something, and also ensures that you receive items in excellent condition.

Bodies change. Any parent is reminded of this every day, witnessing their children grow at a rapid pace. And yet, along the way to adulthood, we become more aware of our body and other bodies, compared to our own. Once you understand your body can change and morph through lifestyle and dietary choices, your relationship with your body becomes more nuanced.
Through fearful memories of my body widening in adolescence to pride in my height and gratitude for my long legs, nothing made me more body-aware than how my body changed after having children.
“I always say: your body is your story, it deserves to be celebrated, not hidden,” mother and Colombian designer Maygel Coronel offers me. “Your body has carried you through life’s chapters, it’s evolved, and that evolution is beautiful. There’s elegance in every curve, every line, every change.”
Maygel opened her first American store at The Post, Montecito’s newest shopping and culinary destination. Her designs aren’t breezy California clothes— they’re body-conscious. They’re bold, yet feminine. Elegant, yet sensual. They’re created using OEKOTEX certified Lycra with muscle memory designed to complement curves, not constrict, through inclusive sizing: One Size, Petite, and Extended.
LOCAL ACCESSORY MAKERS
FOCUS ON HERITAGE AND QUALITY
ARTICLE BY ANNA MARIA STUMP
Sometimes, the accessory makes the outfit. And here, in a land of relaxed, coastal style, liveable accessories are key. Footwear with vintage appeal made from recycled materials. Leather bags that not only withstand sun and sand, but age gracefully from it. And truly customizable, artisan-level western hats and boots destined for family heirloom status. SeaVees. Homer Maker. Grand Central Fashion. These makers represent our home. Come, take your time, and find something that helps tell your story.
SEAVEES: WHERE HISTORY MEETS THE FUTURE OF FOOTWEAR
SeaVees is for seekers, the ones who find magic in the stories behind every stitch. For those who love the hunt of flea markets, the charming pieces from their parents’ closets, that treasure on the vintage shop shelf, SeaVees offers more than just shoes. It offers character and history.
Left on a shelf for nearly 40 years, SeaVees was rediscovered when Steven Tiller stumbled upon an original 1964 pair in a secondhand store in Tokyo.
“When I discovered that vintage pair, I was instantly captivated—not just by the design, but by the spirit it embodied,” says Tiller. “In 1964, SeaVees was ahead of its time, being one of the first brands to position sneakers as casual, everyday wear beyond the gym. That resonated with me.” Inspired, Tiller brought the brand back to life in 2018, blending timeless design with a modern purpose.

Every sneaker tells a story of renewal, and the materials honor the planet as much as the past. “Making shoes responsibly isn’t just a box we check, it’s a lens we look through in everything we do,” says Tiller. “Early on, we committed to better materials: recycled rubber outsoles, recycled cotton, even recycled plastic laces. But that’s just the baseline.”
More than a shoe brand, SeaVees transforms discarded objects into good-looking shoes built to last another lifetime, and leaves as light a footprint as possible. seavees.com
This boutique brand, headed by fashion veteran and former Tommy Bahama CEO, Terry Pillow, makes handmade leather bags that blend tradition with contemporary design.
When Pillow set out on this passion project, he partnered with developer Steven Soria, who has a saddle-maker lineage, and employed a team of artisans to execute the designs.
Steven took Terry to the Carriage and Western Art Museum of Santa Barbara to show him the winning saddle his great uncle made from the Old Spanish Day’s Rodeo in 1956. “As a child I was able to watch the artisans do their work,” says Soria. “I got to learn from the best.” Terry was inspired, and named Homer Maker after his grandfather.
They started with the Vinters Collection of wine carriers and bags rooted in classic Americana. Homer Maker sources raw materials from Hermann Oak Leather in St. Louis, one of the last domestic suppliers and tanneries using the centuries-old vegetable leather-tanning process. The result is durable, elegant leather goods that speak to discerning customers seeking heritage and sophistication.
You are invited into their showroom on Coast Village Road. The intimate space showcases one-of-a-kind handmade items, and smaller accessories like eyeglass lanyards and belts. Leather-scented candles complement the brand’s tactile experience.
For those seeking custom, they will collaborate on a personalized leather bag that reflects your individual style and needs. homermaker.com
“As a child I was able to watch the artisans do their work. I got to learn from the best.”
“Every hat and every boot we make tells a story—and that story always begins with family. The name, Grand Central, represents a meeting point, a crossing of paths where stories come together.”
Founded by Edgar Alvarez in 2019, Grand Central specializes in handcrafted hats and boots. This brand leads with heart. “Every hat and every boot we make tells a story—and that story always begins with family,” says Alvarez. “The name, Grand Central, represents a meeting point, a crossing of paths where stories come together.”
These aren’t mass-produced pieces—they’re wearable heirlooms made with love and appreciation. “As an immigrant, I dreamed of creating a space where tradition, craftsmanship, and community could coexist,” say Alvarez. “My Jaliscan heritage instilled in me a deep respect for handmade work, for preserving cultural trades, and for sharing what we create with pride and purpose.”
Though rooted here, Alvarez sources where the best artisans are, creating jobs across continents. For example, their Panama hats are woven in Ecuador and Colombia using traditional methods, and then sent to their workshop in San Francisco del Rincón, Mexico, to be reshaped, refined, and finished to meet their standards.
From their custom “Hat Bar” experience to developing private label products for other brands, Alvarez and his team stay busy. And the team at Grand Central is as warm as the sun. Probably because that’s Alvarez, who says, “Santa Barbara is my safe haven, my nest, the place where I am truly happy.” grandcentralofficial.com

One of the first gifts expecting parents often receive is a teddy bear. The classic plush toy can elicit a sense of comfort and support that families with new babies need. And it’s why the 23-year-old nonprofit founded by Nikki Katz named itself after one.
The Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (TBCF) has been supporting families with a child battling cancer in the tri-counties since 2002. A resource and support center, the organization has served 1,145 families since its inception under three core programs: emotional support, financial stability, and educational advocacy.
TBCF steps in from the moment a family learns the devastating news of a diagnosis in the hospital. A Family Care Manager is sent to the hospital or a care bag with hospital-ready items is mailed with things like quilts, socks, phone chargers, and more. “It’s an introduction care package,” says Kirsten Stuart, Communications & Events Director.
That introduction is the first in what becomes a lifelong relationship between families and TBCF; it’s the “bear” hug that every family needs during an unbelievably isolating time. The relationship includes everything from immediate direct financial assistance for low-to-moderate income families, and serves everyone in need with gas cards, grocery gift certificates, hospital voucher stays, and more.
“The critical resources offered through our core programs provide comfort by stabilizing a family’s foundation. It’s a little stability while the family is upside down,” says Stuart.
Support groups are available in English and Spanish for every family member, from teens, siblings, and parents. A robust volunteer program delivers gifts and volunteer-assembled baskets are delivered for every holiday. Exclusive events foster a community support network for families going through similar battles, and help to make an impact beyond hospital stays with events like surf days, family fun day, dad’s BBQ, and a Mother’s Day Spa.
“If you’re a low-income family before cancer, chances are you’re almost destitute once cancer strikes,” says Stuart.
Tickets for the 2025 Golden Gala can be purchased at: teddybearcancerfoundation.org/ goldengala
For many children undergoing drastic treatments, schooling is often put on the back burner. As part of the program’s educational advocacy, children and young adults are given access to tutoring services as well as neuropsychological testing. Testing is crucial to help “determine post-treatment strengths and weaknesses,” says Stuart, when a child has spent formative years in a hospital rather than a playground. Every service that falls under TBCF’s core programs understands the complete cycle a family goes through during their cancer journey and ensures no one is left behind.
This September, during National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the nonprofit hosts its largest fundraiser of the year. On September 27, the 2025 Golden Gala will be held at a supporter’s private estate overlooking the Pacific.
While the evening’s festivities are glamorous—you can bet emcee and auctioneer Andrew Firestone will wear something dazzling—the event’s mission is the most important takeaway. “My job is for everybody to leave the event not thinking about the decor, but thinking about the foundation,” adds Stuart. teddybearcancerfoundation.org

directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.
2. Beets are the most time-consuming part of this dish. Remove the greens from the beets and place them in a deep baking dish. Half the orange and squeeze the juice over the beets. Add the oranges to the baking dish with a few sprigs of thyme, bay leaves, and a pinch of salt. Add water until the beets are covered. Cover your baking dish with foil or a lid and place in the oven. Check them with a fork after 45 minutes. Adjust by 15-minute increments until soft. Once cooked, let them cool in their liquid for at least 30 minutes. Drain. Using a clean kitchen towel, place the beets in the towel one at a time, and the skin will rub right off. Once cleaned, cut into large dice. Cool in the fridge.
3. Cut the top and bottom off your onion, half, and peel it. Cut with the grain of the onion and create thin strips. Place the onion in a mason jar or bowl. In a small
sauce pot, add all your pickling liquid ingredients and bring to a boil. Once boiling, pour it over your sliced onions. Leave the onions uncovered and let them cool in the fridge until plating.
4. Cover a cookie tray with parchment paper. Spread the walnuts around and drizzle with olive oil, honey, salt, and cinnamon. Use your hands and coat well. Place them in the oven for about 10 minutes and check for a golden brown color. Be careful: they can go from beautiful to burned quickly.
5. Rinse kale, dry well, and cut into 1-inch strips. In a large sauté pan, heat olive oil. When the oil is hot, add kale and sauté lightly until the color turns bright green and the leaves start to wilt. If it’s a large batch, do this step in several rounds so you don’t crowd your pan.
6. Cut salmon into large strips across the filet. Thicker pieces will hold a medium
This might be a salad, but it’s hearty and full of protein and healthy fats.
• Salmon: About 5 oz per person. Wild salmon, like King or Coho, is preferable. If that’s not available, look for a sashimigrade option, such as Scottish.
• Beets: 1 large beet per person. Pick a mix of golden, red, or striped for more color.
• Tuscan Kale: 1/3 of a bunch per person
• Arugula: 1 cup per person
• Goat cheese: 1/4 cup per person (or more)
• Walnuts: 1/4 cup person
• Red Onion: 1/4 cup per person
• Oranges: 1 orange for every 4 beets
• Fresh thyme: 1 bunch
• Bay Leaves: 2-4 leaves
• Additional items: Whole lemons, olive oil, honey, cinnamon, salt
Pickling liquid for 1 large onion:
• 1 cup apple cider vinegar
• 1 cup water
• 2 tablespoons honey
• Pinch of salt
rare nicely, and the belly pieces can be cooked well without drying out. Heat a large sauté pan with a decent amount of olive oil. Pat the top side of your salmon with a paper towel to dry it. Once the pan is hot, season the fish with salt and pepper, then place the seasoned side into the pan. When you see your golden crust start to inch up the side, that’s your sign it’s ready to flip. Cook until desired temp.
7. Add your kale, beets, arugula, and pickled onions into a large bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Top with candied walnuts and goat cheese. Serve with your beautifully seared salmon.
