I hadn’t graduated from UCSB before I was married and, soon after, pregnant with my first son. I was 22 years old, and I went from True Grit Dresses (see Loveworn story, page 20) and cutoff jeans on Padero to dresses from a Pea in the Pod at the park. For reasons beyond my comprehension, I thought moms had to dress a certain way and be an archetype. That meant I had to purchase collared button-down shirts, midrise jeans, and cable knit sweaters from Talbots at La Cumbre shopping center.
I’m embarrassed looking back, but photos of me in my twenties look like a woman desperately trying to live up to a 1950s stereotypical homemaker aesthetic. I believed an investment piece had to be kept for a lifetime, so choosing well caused complete overwhelm.
Style can be complex when trying to “fit in” physically into our clothes, mentally into a new identity, and emotionally into what we love and what inspires us. It took me a long time to figure out what felt authentic and permit myself to change my mind. I’ve learned that style isn’t scary, and a body of entrepreneurial creatives in Santa Barbara are looking for this community to step in as their muse.
I’m happy to report that iconic Santa Barbara fashion brands and stylists abound. I’m passionate about supporting these businesses and feel fortunate to have a front-row seat to see how they grow. I hope our Style Issue inspires you to find your evolved style, discover local creatives, hear their stories, and share yours.

Local stylist Devon Remade helps women find their style identities

When life’s significant changes occur, we don’t think our style will get lost in the wake. For so many, it does. And just because you have a closet bulging with clothes doesn’t mean you love what’s in there.
Enter local stylist Devon Reinauer, who became a personal stylist after working in fashion and design for over 20 years. The catalyst for her styling business, Devon Remade, was when she had her second child and felt lost in her closet. She found her evolved style identity through a system of purging and tweaking and set out to help others do the same no matter what transitions they’re going through.
Devon wants women to “enjoy getting dressed again.” She has over 70 clients, mainly in California. She works with some items already in clients’ closets and rebuilds from there. Her mantra is “fewer, better pieces,” and she pulls clothes mostly
from Santa Barbara retailers—Heidi Merrick, Wendy Foster, and Wunderkind, to name a few. She also aims to support female designers. Ultimately, she wants women to feel their best, “Comfortable and confident in their clothes.”
During a visit to Heidi Merrick’s Summerland showroom, Devon worked with our model, Sophia Taylor, to find her style identity among the racks of tailored chic. Sophia wears many hats. A real estate agent/mom/model/co-founder of Galavant, a backyard concert series promoting local musicians and artists, we aimed to find looks that felt right for Santa Barbara’s seasonal shift from summer to fall. Kids are back to school, and holidays are around the corner, but our hottest months still beckon beach days and BBQs.
“Season transitions can be easier with fewer, better pieces,” Devon reiterates. She recommends layering this time of year to be comfortable during hot days and cool evenings. She points out that neutrals are a starting point and can carry through all seasons. A slightly oversized blazer and sunglasses are “effortlessly cool.” Sophia lights up when she looks in the mirror in the Ibiza dress. In a somewhat sheer, ivory georgette fabric with an artful iris print, Devon explains, “That dress reads summer and fall.” Behold the perfect transition dress.
As a witness to Devon’s style support, simplifying your style could help you navigate the challenges of going through a big transition. One less thing to worry about. Why not free up more space to focus on moving through adversity with more ease?

What makes for a good story? My best stories begin dancing the line between predictability and surprise, unfolding in a resolution that transcends my imagination. Nestled between a Pilates studio and a volunteer-based healthcare provider downtown is The Story, a photography studio and vintage fashion showroom owned by Texas-grown stylist Nina Q.
Nina has a cornucopia of stories, having lived in seven different countries and owning boutiques in two of them. She most effectively expresses her stories through fashion. Her maximalist style parallels her calendar; colorful and busy, yet intentional and overall makes sense. I’ve shared this calendar with Nina for a year and have watched the appointments evolve from styling and alteration sessions with
seamstresses to meetings with creative agencies and scheduled “Content Creation” time with Instagram influencers. The Story (literally and figuratively) is constantly defining itself.
Styling has always been at the forefront of what we do. The Story’s doors are open to anyone interested, and we’ve run with ideas from the most unlikely of patrons, always creating something exciting. Nina’s welcoming, open-minded nature has manifested itself in many ways, from producing and styling an editorial at The Granada Theatre, as showcased on these pages, to hosting networking events for Santa Barbara’s creative and marketing industry. Our community is the common thread in all of the projects we’ve taken on.
Anything can happen in The Story’s next chapter. Unbound by “goals,” we hope to continue writing a narrative that embodies vibrancy, playfulness, and delightful optimism.
“She most effectively expresses her stories through fashion.”

““Jill’s endeavor revolutionized shopping, enabling consumers to establish a direct relationship with their favorite designer.”
In this lifetime, Jill Johnson has lived many lives. An ageless woman, she’s a classically trained ballerina, mixed media artist, clothing designer, retail entrepreneur, and vintage beach goddess. Jill founded one of the most popular stores in the Funk Zone, Loveworn. She’s hit the point of her career where she’s dressed two generations with her iconic Bunny Jackson dress sewn from vintage fabrics. The Bunny Jackson dress became a local cult classic in the 90s with Jill’s first store, True Grit, on State Street.
Jill’s expertise in the fundamentals of pattern making and design opened up opportunities early in her career to be a trusted buyer of the most eponymous brands coming out of LA. One of the original vintage huntresses, she gained connections to treasure troves of vintage fabrics and Levi’s jeans. She started sewing her own pieces, creating one-of-a-kind wearable art, and her popularity grew.
Always on the lookout for the next big thing, Jill was drawn into an innovative project in the early 2000s. As the internet was gaining popularity for online shopping, she was part of a platform that allowed designers to sell their fashion directly to consumers. At a time when designers believed consumers would only buy after touching and trying on clothes, Jill’s endeavor revolutionized shopping, enabling consumers to establish a direct relationship with their favorite designers.
Now, seven years in the Funk Zone space she shares with artist and longtime collaborator Wallace Piatt, the Loveworn brand is Jill’s homecoming and calling. Her silk-screened and custom-designed clothes continue to appeal to shoppers of all ages.
Jill sees a bright future ahead for Loveworn. Plans are in the works for more locations and scaling the e-commerce side that will bring this Santa Barbara brand to the masses.
Hand-silkscreened tees and sweatshirts, vintage Levi’s, couture cashmere, and the cutest mini dresses. Locally owned. Woman-owned.
