On Womanhood
May in Santa Barbara may bring some May Gray, but nothing dims the light of the incredible women we are celebrating in this issue. From mothers and mentors to advocates and entrepreneurs, this month is dedicated to the strength, resilience, and heart of the women shaping our community.
As a mother, I know firsthand that womanhood is a journey of constant evolution, balancing career, family, and ambition, with unexpected twists along the way. With seven children, I’ve experienced the chaos and beauty of raising a family, and I’m continually in awe of the women who do it all—who lift each other up, push through adversity, and create change.
One of those remarkable women is Victoria Strong, whose journey of advocacy began with her daughter Gwendolyn’s diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Never accepting limitations, Victoria turned her pain into purpose, launching the Never Give Up foundation to champion awareness and resources for families facing disabilities. Today, she continues to make a lasting impact, raising over $6.5 million to build Gwendolyn’s Playground in Santa Barbara, ensuring that people of all abilities will have a space to experience the joy of play.
We also take a closer look at women’s health, highlighting the resources and support available as women navigate different stages of life. From holistic wellness to specialized care, we explore how our community is fostering a proactive and empowering approach to healthy aging.
Our Mother’s Day Gift Guide is filled with thoughtful ways to celebrate the women who give so much of themselves every day. My passion is centered around supporting our local small businesses in Santa Barbara and there’s a bounty to choose from.
As the marine layer lingers, this issue shines with stories of perseverance, passion, and purpose. I hope you find inspiration in these pages and in the remarkable women who continue to shape our community.

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

She wears many hats, and sometimes, she’s too busy to buy her own hat. And in this town, you can’t have too many hats. Know this: Mother’s Day is her second birthday, and she gets to celebrate however and with whoever she wants. In case she doesn’t say what she wants, here are some ideas inspired by the hometown she knows and loves. Cheers to the mothers who make daily magic happen.
This mother of two’s pick? A beach day pop-up with six friends beautifully arranged by Santa Barbara Together. Please throw in the catered lunch and drinks so I can purposely show up empty-handed. Sounds like a dream day…
Since 2008, when her oldest daughter was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) at six months, Victoria Strong fought to keep Gwendolyn safe, alive, and happy.
ARTICLE BY MEAGHAN CLARK TIERNAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY MERRILL
“There was such a fight for everything—every dollar, every insurance [claim], even just going to the hospital,” she says; so much that she had to be “10 steps ahead just to get through the day.”
Victoria Strong is a fighter
“This playground will create a generational shift.”
That fight manifested itself into advocacy and the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to “transforming lives and building a kinder and more inclusive future through advocacy, research, and support.” It has helped fund global SMA research that’s led to FDA-approved treatments, helped get SMA added to newborn screening, and provided support grants to help SMA families attain greater independence.
But perhaps the project the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation is most known for is Gwendolyn’s Playground, which will be Santa Barbara’s first and the region’s largest all-ability playground within the Dwight Murphy Field.
The playground’s features are designed specifically for special user needs, including swings designed to accommodate wheelchairs or other mobility aids, a decompression space, and slides accessible via ramp. Renovations at Dwight Murphy Field will also include
an updated multi-sport field, walking paths, and picnic fields, funded in part by the City Council.
Fundraising for the park has been a nine-year passion for Strong, who was bowled over by the support from the city and community. “Whenever you approach a big system change, you have to go into it knowing it’s going to take time and you have to do the work,” she says. But for this project, she’s been able to put down her boxing gloves.
“I went into this assuming I’d have to fight, to prove that it’s important,” she said. “That hasn’t been the case at all,” Strong says.
“It’s really gratifying as a Parks & Recreation Director to be able to work with an organization like the [Gwendolyn Strong] Foundation to develop park improvements that benefit the entire community,” says Jill Zachary, Parks and Recreations Director.
The playground will allow every child in our region to just be a kid: to play and have fun with their peers. Families with young children who endured the pandemic’s early isolated months know how vital public parks are to any community, especially one like ours, where outdoor play can happen nearly 365 days a year.
Strong’s work isn’t only about building an inclusive playground, it’s also about educating our community. “This playground will create a generational shift,” Strong says. Her goal now–with $6 million raised to fund the playground—is to establish an endowment fund for long-term maintenance and create programs that support children and children at heart.
Strong and her husband would attend school with Gwendolyn and interact with classmates regularly. Since she was non-verbal, Gwendolyn communicated via eye rolls and blinking. “For me, that’s what programming will be all about,” Strong says. “It’s modeling. It’s showing the kids, adults, and community how to [interact with disabled peoples]. Kids are naturally inclusive. They may say things adults get embarrassed about because it comes out very raw, but their hearts are in the right place. If given permission, kids will try anything new and are so accepting.”
Strong wants Gwendolyn’s Playground to become the epicenter for that model—for a child’s inquisitive spirit to come alive in a space that offers disabled and able-bodied children events and programming to come together and play, laugh, and learn. “There’s so much we can do with our public spaces,” Strong says.
Another initiative is The Kindness Cafe, a custom coffee trailer that will reside in the playground and employ adults and teens with disabilities. Coffee, smoothies, and snacks will profit additional inclusive programming efforts. The cafe will act not just as a pit stop for curbing hunger pains, but also a place for social change because, as Strong says, “It will be an opportunity to see disabled people in the workplace. And that normalizes that disabled people have value.” Breaking ground for the playground is just the beginning. A true advocate and courageous mother, Strong is only getting started.

Words of Wisdom
Some of my most memorable woman-to-woman advice moments were when I least expected it. She was insightful and comforting. She was listening and genuinely caring. Sometimes words of wisdom came from a woman I barely knew. Sisterhood support is everywhere, especially here. Wellness rituals. Giving yourself grace. Asking for help. Gratitude. Not taking it personally. Self-advocacy. We rounded up some empowered business owners who shared about how they got here, too. Ladies, we’re in this together, let’s keep showing up for each other.

“Don’t be so hard on yourself—great things take time to flourish. Learn to step back and see the bigger picture. Success doesn’t happen overnight; it’s built through time, effort, and meaningful relationships.
Balancing work, life, and motherhood is always a challenge, but giving yourself grace is key. Transitioning from an intense work life to motherhood meant embracing a new identity and redefining my priorities.
It’s about finding a rhythm that allows me to be present without burning out.
Coming from a small town in Texas, having friends and neighbors who feel like family is everything. Santa Barbara is full of people who genuinely care. It’s a place built on generosity, connection, and a shared love for giving back to your community.”

“I routinely remind myself that balance is an illusion, closely linked to perfection. Sure, I have moments of feeling like I’m killing it—a clean home, a full clinic schedule, exercise or friend time, energy to do whatever my son wants—but mostly, I take it day by day.
I have lists and calendars for a bird’s-eye view. I check in with myself and my son’s needs: the mustdos, wants, and expectations. Sometimes, I even harness the energy of where I am in my cycle, which is a helpful compass.
I’m a single mother and small business owner. There is only so much of me to go around. Accepting that, accepting help, and keeping the company of those I can authentically be myself around allows me the space to breathe. I hope my son sees me striving for joy, not perfect balance. Sometimes, you just have to let the dishes pile up, let the laundry wait, and get those feet in the sand.”

“Your brain is best refreshed after a good night’s sleep. I try to stop eating for two hours and stop looking at blue light for one hour before I hit the pillow. I keep my Daily Gratitude Journal in the bathroom to use it first and last thing in the day. I drink apple cider vinegar + water + lemon juice before a cup of coffee, organized the night before so it’s ready in the AM.
The best hack that keeps my day running smoothly is treating my calendar like a coach. We stash notes in the calendar block, so I’m best prepared for that meeting or call. I pepper in motivational phrases. After lunch, a 30-minute check-in makes sure that whatever and whoever was on my list in the morning gets a follow-up. There’s a 20-minute afternoon meditation block.
One of the best things I ever did was implement 30 minutes at the end of my day to tie up loose ends, data dump anything that needs follow-up, and clean my desktop so I walk in ready the next day.”

“I would tell my younger self not to be in such a rush. You learn from everything. Starting and running your own business means being disciplined with time and energy. Creating a product takes more than you would ever imagine. There was joyful creativity when we created our initial essential oil-based perfume, The First. Finding and sourcing the bottle components, boxes, bar codes, accounting, and legal weren’t as much fun. It’s rewarding when people share that it enhances their lives and helps them feel strong and sexy.”
LUCY FIRESTONE, TRANSFORMATION COACH:
“Sisterhood was the reason we started Firestone Sisters Inc. We realized how lucky we were to have each other. Being in business with your sister is intense. It can bring up sibling patterns that are no longer relevant. With someone not connected to your life, you can take a different job and leave. With a sister, you are forced to work out the dynamics. We’ve been to couples counseling, and it has served us as business partners, sisters, friends, aunts, and daughters.” firestonesisters.com

My biggest productivity hack is outsourcing. Train others to do the day-to-day tasks so you can focus on the big picture and what you’re good at.

Chiara Shannon blends wisdom with wine
Pouring Passion
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? —Mary Oliver Wine expert Chiara Shannon’s choice of Mary Oliver’s question speaks volumes about her outlook on life and work. Pouring her passion for wine into creating a meaningful career in which she can share her knowledge to inspire and educate others, Chiara discovered her inner oenophile more than 20 years ago.
“Shortly after college, I was introduced to wine,” says Chiara, noting her interest in the geography, history, and culture of wine, as well as its taste. “I followed my curiosity and took a deep dive,” landing a job at Schramsberg Vineyards in Napa, launching her decades-long career.
Chiara and Joseph
During her roles as sommelier, wine buyer, retail store manager, educator, and consultant, Chiara also began to practice yoga, earning her teacher certification.
“Yoga is a great way to stay grounded and healthy,” says Chiara, noting the overlapping themes between yoga, mindfulness, and wine. “The more I learned about soil health and biodynamic farming, I realized it is very much aligned with mindfulness and thinking of everything as one whole ecosystem, much like with yoga and how we think about people as not just individuals, but as part of the whole,” she shares.
Blending her love of wine with mindfulness practices, Chiara created Mindful Wine: Taste With Intention™ programs to promote sustainable stewardship. Her work, featured in FORBES, The Wall Street Journal, and Tasting Panel Magazine, aligns with her intention to share her knowledge and educate others about the importance of biodynamic agriculture.
Noting the practical application of her philosophical views, Chiara feels a responsibility to educate others about the importance of regenerative agriculture.
Their recent acquisition of an 80-acre vineyard estate in Santa Barbara’s Sta. Rita Hills allows Chiara and her husband Joseph Brent to do just that. The
property includes a 25-acre vineyard, the nation’s first to achieve certifications for organic, biodynamic, and sustainable farming. Named after the Santa Ynez groundstar, a rare, local flower that was believed to be extinct and recently rediscovered in western Lompoc, Groundstar Vineyard continues the legacy of stewardship established by former owners, Peter and Rebecca Work of Ampelos Cellars.
“We are honored to take on this new role and look forward to upholding the ideals that Peter and Rebecca have instilled here,” says Joseph, a founding partner of California-based law firm Brent & Fiol LLP.
“We get to be the new stewards of this property,” says Chiara. “Our plan is to take Groundstar to the next level, moving toward regenerative agriculture and becoming Regenerative Organic Certified®. We need to heal our soils, and we need to do it now,” she emphasizes, adding that their vision includes hosting educational events and supporting the community.
“We’re all connected. We want to promote other businesses and nonprofits. How can we be of service?” Chiara asks.

PEACH CAPRESE SALAD
ARTICLE BY MIA PASQUALUCCI PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOSH GRUETZMACHER
A colorful bounty of goodness by Healthy Warrior SB
ingredients:
SALAD:
• 8 oz container fresh whole mozzarella or burrata in water
• 4 - 5 heirloom tomatoes (various sizes and colors)
• 1 container cherry tomatoes
• 2 heads red oak lettuce
• 4 heads radicchio
• 4 - 5 peaches
• 1 bunch of fresh basil
VINAIGRETTE:
• 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
• 2 tablespoon honey
• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
• 1 cup avocado oil
• salt and pepper (to taste)
• 1/2 cup of water
directions:
Step 1. Cut your head of lettuce lengthwise and into thin strips. I chose red oak for volume and radicchio for a little spice. Mix your greens, clean them, and pat dry with a towel. Keep in the fridge.
Step 2. Slice your cheese. I chose a 1/2-inch thick half-moon shape so the cheese stands out.
Step 3. Quarter your larger tomatoes and half your cherry tomatoes. The goal is a similar bite size.
Step 4. Slice your peaches into 1/2 inch wedges. Leave the ripe ones as is. Drizzle olive oil and salt on your firmer ones and grill them lightly to bring out the sweetness.
Step 5. In a blender add vinegar, honey, mustard, salt, and pepper. Add a splash of water and blend on low. Bring up to medium and slowly add your oil. When you are halfway through your oil add another splash of water. Finish blending in the oil and stop to taste. If it’s too acidic add a little more honey; if it’s too thick add a little water.
Step 6. Build your platter starting with your greens, then layer in the cheese. Add your tomatoes and peaches. Tear whole basil leaves and place them around evenly. Finish by dressing.
Enjoy and share with people you love!
Ciao, Mia

Moving Through Midlife
ARTICLE BY LAURA ABRIGNANI, RN, NP, MSN, MSCP PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARRA CREATIVE STUDIO
Laura Abrignani
In some cultures, women are celebrated for their resilience and revered and respected as they enter menopause.
In Chinese culture, menopause is known as the “Second Spring.” It represents a renewal of energy, shifting from the reproductive phase to a time for nourishing and conserving the self. Women are beautifully celebrated for their gifts of wisdom, innate confidence, and life experience.
In the US, menopause hasn’t been a popular topic of conversation in healthcare or in culture. It’s frequently dismissed or misunderstood—it’s certainly not celebrated. With approximately 1.3 million women in the US entering menopause each year who are likely to live 40% of their lives in this phase, why are Americans still mystified about menopause?
For those moving through it, you can probably relate to the inopportune hot flash or sticking your head in the freezer. Brain fog causes you to pace the room, wondering what you were doing—at least you’re getting your steps in.
Menopause is much more than a hot flash or brain fog. It’s a time of transition and changes, some welcome and some not. And what you decide to do about it can be confusing: Should I take hormones? Is this normal? Do I just need to power through?
Women can get all the answers. But first, here’s a download of what’s going on.
There are three phases to the menopause transition: perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Each phase has its characteristics and health considerations. Initially as estrogen fluctuates and declines, it triggers the classic symptoms: acute vasomotor (hot flashes, night sweats), urogenital (vaginal dryness, pain, sexual dysfunction), and psychological changes (mood changes, brain fog). Then once the ovaries have retired and stop producing the female sex hormones, women transition into the post-menopausal phase.
Being aware of this process is important because hormonal changes and deficiencies can affect multiple body systems. If ignored or untreated, it can lead to detrimental health effects. The North American Menopause Society says that hormone therapy has more benefits than risks for women younger than 60 and within ten years of menopause, unless they have specific complicating health factors. While HRT can be effective, it’s not a magic anti-aging pill.
Because menopause starts in midlife, you need to know if your symptoms are from aging, hormones, or both. Overlapping health issues need to be identified and addressed with proper context. Providing short-term symptom relief, prevention of long-term health issues, exploring the role of alternative therapies, while recognizing the importance of a holistic approach to daily activities and stress reduction is what all women deserve.
Continue asking and advocating for yourself and what you need to move through the menopause transition safely. Women do not need to suffer in silence or struggle through a natural transition when there are options that make life easier and more pleasant.
At Coastal Well Woman, my initial “Menopause Conversation” always focuses on an individual woman’s specific and unique challenges, along with her desired goals. We elevate the healthcare experience and optimize outcomes through a partnership where open communication, listening, and guiding women through their journey is respected and celebrated.
Laura Abrignani owns Coastal Well Woman, a comprehensive gynecology practice for women of all ages specializing in menopause health. Laura is a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) with over 25 years of women’s healthcare experience.

Bagel QA with Mother Dough Bagels
ARTICLE BY MEAGHAN CLARK TIERNAN PHOTOGRAPHY
“It’s a bagel shop, so it’s not that serious,” says Jennifer GonzalezNeely, co-founder and chief bagel maker at Mother Dough Bagels. Yet, Gonzalez-Neely is extremely serious about everything she serves from the kitchen at the downtown brick-and-mortar, which opened in January.
Dedication to her craft started when she became a mother. “I’ve always been, as a mom, notorious about what goes in my kids’ stomachs. I try to be as clean as possible. If I can make it from scratch, I’ll do it.” That means everything on their rotating menu is as homemade as it can get, from curing her meats to sourcing seafood and produce from the local markets.
Learn why throngs of people wait hours for her organic, handrolled, New York-style bagels and spreads:
WHY SOURDOUGH BAGELS?
“I was pregnant with my second [child] and needed a bagel in Santa Barbara, and there just weren’t any. So I started making it myself,” she says. Like 90% of the population during the pandemic, she learned to make sourdough. “I learned about its benefits, the fermentation process, and how much better it is for you to consume food that way.”
WHAT ELSE ARE YOU COOKING UP?
“My favorite part, which wasn’t planned, is the collaborations I’ve been able to do. It allows me to step outside the box and be creative.” Be on the lookout for new seasonal menu items in collaboration with Rascal’s Vegan, Barbareno, and Loquita.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO BAGEL?
“I make my bagels and spreads by combining different flavors based on my mood. If I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll go with my furikake, which is gochujang or tobiko cream cheese. But sometimes I’m feeling simple, and sea salt with garlic herb [cream cheese] hits the spot.”
