Welcome fall!
With the changing seasons comes a change in what we crave, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages around town—including where to buy fresh produce.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with one of Roswell’s newest restaurant owners, Jonathan Yu, and what a treat it was to experience Truth Be Told.
We also share the story of two local women in wine and food who had big dreams and have shone a light on Roswell with their success and future endeavors.

A Blueprint for Rising Again
Strategic Grace:
When Nic Blaize was laid off from her nearly 20-year federal career, it was one of the most jarring moments of her life. Her entire team was also let go. While she tried to be strong for them, she realized she wasn’t extending that same grace to herself.
“I felt like I had to be the strong one for everyone else, but inside, I didn’t see a clear or strategic way forward.”
“I couldn’t rely on emotion alone to get back up, and I couldn’t rely on strategy alone without healing. It’s about merging both with empathy and clear action,” she explains.
“Doubt is normal. Confidence comes from action, not waiting to feel ready,” she says.
Strategic Grace is available on Amazon. For signed copies or updates, email info@inspire gravity.com or follow @NicBlaize on Instagram.
During that time, she bonded with others facing similar uncertainty. They shared fears and hopes, and she began doing the deep “root work” she had been avoiding.
“I started piecing together a blueprint that blended grace with strategy. I realized this wasn’t just for me. It’s a guide for women navigating their own transitions,” she says. Strategic Grace was born from that transformation, a roadmap for anyone knocked down but made for more.
Blaize wears many hats—Centers for Disease Control and Prevention leader, coach, strategist, and pageant director. Though different, they share one mission: helping people reach their fullest potential.
To Blaize, Strategic Grace means balancing compassion and intentional action. Grace helps us release guilt and forgive ourselves. Strategy gives us a plan to rebuild and pursue goals.

AMISH FURNITURE FOR MODERN LIVING
Inside DutchCrafters:
ARTICLE BY ASPEN FOLTZ
Jim and Linse Miller
“
“I come from Amish and Mennonite heritage. There’s a personal connection to the community.” -Jim Miller
Since 2003, DutchCrafters has been redefining what it means to shop for Amish furniture. Founded by husband-and-wife team Jim and Linse Miller, the company started as a small online retailer and has grown into the largest source for Amish furniture in the U.S., with over 12,000 handcrafted pieces and showrooms in Sarasota, and Alpharetta,
We sat down with the Millers to learn more about their journey, what sets DutchCrafters apart, and how they’re blending old-world craftsmanship with modern living.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START DUTCHCRAFTERS?
Jim: I come from Amish and Mennonite heritage, there’s a personal connection to the community. But the real inspiration came from Linse. We started selling niche products online in 2003, Amish crafts and outdoor décor quickly gained traction. Linse saw the potential to expand into indoor hardwood furniture. That became a quick hit and became our focus.
WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU FACE EARLY ON?
Jim: The biggest hurdle was bridging the gap between “slow” furniture—built-to-order, handcrafted pieces—and the fast-paced world of ecommerce. Internet retail was an untested wild west: low prices, poor quality, fast shipping. Building customer trust was critical. We had an atypical product that didn't fit the model. Many Amish woodworkers were also hesitant to partner with an online retailer. We had many polite rejections in those early days.
WHAT’S YOUR RELATIONSHIP LIKE WITH YOUR BUILDERS TODAY?
Linse: We've developed strong, lasting partnerships with our woodworkers. Many of them consider us trusted partners and friends. We visit their shops regularly, often bringing employees with us, and we’ve been welcomed into their homes, even their weddings. These relationships are built on mutual respect and shared values.
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT AMISH FURNITURE?
Jim: People often think of Amish furniture as outdated—heavy oak, harvest finishes, grandma’s style. But that's just one slice of what’s available. Walk into one
of our showrooms and you’ll see contemporary styles, mid-century modern and more. Walnut, rustic oak, hickory, and maple are popular woods, and we have more finish options than I can count. And for the record, we love our customers who are grandmas! But our designs are made to resonate with every generation and a wide range of style preferences.
WHAT MAKES DUTCHCRAFTERS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER RETAILERS?
Linse: Authenticity is a big. Every piece we sell is solid wood, made by the Amish in America. Some retailers make similar claims, but customers should read labels. Our barnwood really comes from old barns. Our live edge is the real deal.
Jim: Customization is another differentiator. Everything is built to order, and we make non-standard customizations all the time. It's something we do really well. We’re also the largest Amish furniture retailer in the country. Our website offers over 12,000 pieces, and our showroom staff help customers navigate all those options with personalized service.
WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON?
Linse: We’re expanding our design services, including in-home consultations and tailored solutions for businesses. Recently, we worked with the Culinary Institute of America, providing new dining tables and chairs for their main sanctuary. We’ve also worked with restaurants, clubs, hotels, and colleges in Atlanta and nationwide.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE?
Jim: We’re proud of the awards we’ve received over the years, but ones that mean the most are being a “Best Place to Work.” Our employees are the heart of DutchCrafters. Their passion, creativity, and commitment shape everything we do. We've built an intentional, values-driven culture that supports and recognizes them—and that’s a big reason for our success.
DutchCrafters proves that honoring tradition doesn’t mean sacrificing innovation. Dedicated to craftsmanship, authenticity, and customer service, they have found a unique balance: crafting heirloom-quality furniture built for today’s lifestyles, and tomorrow’s generations.

Roswell Women in Wine and Food are Dreaming Big CELEBRATING
PASSION, CREATIVITY, AND THE COMMUNITIES THEY NOURISH
DANA GURELA:
ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CRYSTINA KENNEDY
Pouring Passion, Planting Deep Roots
When Dana Gurela discovered the world of wine, it wasn’t just about what was in the glass. It was the stories, the people, and the sense of community that drew her in. That’s exactly what Dana Gurela set out to create when she opened Deep Roots Wine Market & Tasting Room in Roswell in July 2018.
Dana’s journey into the wine industry didn’t follow a straight path. Her early career was rooted in purchasing and inventory management for manufacturing companies, but everything shifted when she moved to California in 2012. With wine country just down the road, Dana found herself spending more and more time exploring vineyards and tasting rooms. “I began to realize that I had a real interest in the whole process… the viticulture, winemaking and overall business of the wine industry was all very fascinating to me!” she says. By 2015, she enrolled at Napa Valley Wine Academy and San Francisco Wine School, building a foundation of knowledge while also working as a hospitality associate in a Napa tasting room. “It was then that I realized I had finally found my passion!”
When it came time to return to Georgia, Dana knew she wanted to bring the spirit of Napa with her. “I wanted to emulate the experience of tasting a wine and learning about the grapes, the growers and winemakers behind it and then offering it for sale by the bottle… just like in wine country!” The name “Deep Roots” came from a family brainstorm, a nod to both the vineyards they celebrate and their own decision to return home. “Our roots run deep here, just like the roots of the vines,” she says.

Deep Roots Drink Stations
From the start, Deep Roots resonated with Roswell. “I mostly remember that it was a combination of a lot of work, a lot of pride, and a lot of excitement,” Dana recalls. “But most importantly, it was amazing to feel the love from the community. We were welcomed with open arms and it was clear we were at home here!”
What makes Deep Roots unique is its approach. Originally focused only on California wines, Dana has since expanded to showcase wines from across the United States. At the heart of the tasting room experience are the Napa Technology Wine Station dispensers, which keep 32 bottles open and ready to taste every day. The selfserve model makes it easy for guests to sample at their own pace, with tasting notes provided to guide their choices. “It’s important for us to make wine accessible and non-pretentious,” Dana explains. “We are there to give them recommendations and talk in depth about the wines if they want to go there. However, we never want to make them feel intimidated about wine!”
That welcoming atmosphere is no accident. Dana is quick to credit her family and team. “I’m most proud of making Deep Roots a true family run business. I could not have done this on my own,” she says. Her son Eddie and daughter-in-law Julia run day to day operations, while her husband Todd handles IT and maintenance. Another daughter-in-law, Anna, manages social media, and even Dana’s mom gets involved by teaching mahjong classes. “And over the years, the Deep Roots team has become like family to me. They care about this business just as much as I do!”
The Roswell community has been instrumental in their success. “Without the support, Deep Roots would simply not exist. From day one, people have embraced us with open arms. Roswell definitely has a passion for supporting local businesses.”
That strong foundation has allowed Deep Roots to grow. In December 2023, she opened a Woodstock location with a kitchen and more dining options. A franchise opened in Chamblee in 2024, with another set to open in Marietta Square.
As for advice to other women dreaming of a similar path, Dana keeps it real.
“I hope people take away the feeling that they've found their community, a place that is genuinely welcoming and not intimidating…one where they are comfortable to be exactly who you are.”
-Dana Gurela, Deep Roots
“You can do it! It's a journey filled with passion, but it's not one you can take on alone. My biggest advice is to build a strong support system. Running a business is a marathon, not a sprint, and you can't pour from an empty cup.”
At the end of the day, Dana hopes every guest takes away a sense of belonging. “I hope people take away the feeling that they've found their community, a place that is genuinely welcoming and not intimidating, one where they are comfortable to be exactly who you are.”

KADIJAH VICKERS
Serving Up More Than a Meal at The Vick When Kadijah Vickers opened The Vick on Canton Street in August of 2021, she wasn’t just launching a restaurant, she was building a place where food and community come together in a way people don’t forget. Her vision was to create something fresh and vibrant, blending Southern warmth with a modern touch. Today, The Vick is where regulars feel at home, new faces are welcomed in, and guests leave as friends.
“The Vick was born out of my love for food, community, and creating experiences that people remember long after the meal is over,” Kadijah says. “We focus on approachable yet elevated dishes, paired with genuine hospitality.”
The early days were anything but easy. Long hours, endless details, and learning on the fly became Kadijah’s routine. “What I remember most is the energy and adrenaline,” she recalls. “Every decision felt huge, every customer meant the world, and every win kept me motivated.”
That perseverance paid off. As The Vick marks another anniversary, Kadijah is grateful for how far it has come. “I’m proud that The Vick has become more than just a restaurant, it’s a gathering place,” she says. “Seeing familiar faces return, meeting new guests, and knowing we’ve created a space where people feel at home, that’s what fills me with pride.”
Her path hasn’t been without challenges. Opening a new restaurant, especially in a city with established favorites, wasn’t always easy. “There were sleepless nights wondering how the bills were going to get paid,” Kadijah admits. “I’d sit in the restaurant wondering why people weren’t coming in.” But she also had people who believed in her when she needed it most. They were mentors and community leaders like Bob Hagan,
Hospitality in action
Elevated comfort, served with a side of Southern warmth
Live music brings extra flavor to the night at The Vick
Sandy Buhler, and William Brown from the Roswell Rotary. “William told me I was becoming ‘legendary’ for opening not just one, but two restaurants as a Black woman entrepreneur,” she says. “That recognition pushed me to keep going and show others what’s possible.”
Food and hospitality are at the heart of Kadijah’s philosophy. “For me, food is love, and hospitality is service from the heart,” she explains. “I strive to create dishes that feel familiar but surprise you in the best way. Hospitality is about making every guest feel like family.”
Excitement is brewing with The Vick’s expansion into downtown Atlanta. The second location, opening inside the historic Healey Building at 57 Forsyth St. NW, promises to carry the same DNA as the Roswell spot while bringing its own unique energy to the downtown community.
Balancing the roles of chef, owner, and business leader is no small feat. “It’s definitely a juggling act,” Kadijah says. “I switch constantly between creativity in the kitchen and strategy in the office. The key has been building a strong team I can trust, people who share my passion for excellence and help carry the vision forward.”
Through it all, the community has remained central to her journey. “Roswell has been our foundation,” Kadijah adds. “The loyalty, encouragement, and support have been everything. People didn’t just show up for dinner, they became part of our story.”
For women dreaming of opening their own restaurants, Kadijah offers this advice: “Don’t tell a bunch of people about your dream in the beginning. When others can’t see your vision, it can discourage you and instill fear. Truly and wholeheartedly believe in yourself. Block out negativity and know what is meant for you.”

THE HAUNTED SIDE OF ROSWELL
TAKE A JAUNT THROUGH THE HAUNTS OF OLD ROSWELL WITH THE ROSWELL GHOST TOUR
ARTICLE BY WENDY EDWARDS
If you’re from Roswell, you’ve likely heard the whispers of Bulloch Hall’s mysterious “running boy” or the Public House’s lingering inhabitants. With events dating back to the mid-19th century, Roswell is steeped in stories of the unexplained. October is the perfect time to explore them, and owner David Wood’s, Roswell Ghost Tour, led by his experienced team, brings the city’s haunted history to life.
Roswell King envisioned blending the fever of the gold rush with the area’s abundant resources, creating a thriving community that grew into a metropolitan leader. In the 186 years since, the city has seen both triumph and tragedy. The Roswell Ghost Tour shares these stories, often backed by photos from past guests that capture what can’t be explained.
Well-known paranormal investigators, including Chip Coffey and Shane Pittman from hit shows like Paranormal State, Ghost Hunters and Holzer Files, have led special tours, helping cement its reputation among avid enthusiasts. Likewise, each of The Roswell Ghost Tour’s six guides offers a unique experience with their own encounters and stories. On our evening stroll, guide Kevin Baker, great-great-great-great grandson of Barrington King, described family deaths tied to a single chair inside Barrington Hall. He laughed and declared, “I will never sit in that chair as long as I want to live!”
The tour is designed for nearly everyone. Groups meet at the town square gazebo at 8 p.m. year-round on Friday and Saturday nights, with tours operating almost nightly in October. The mile-long route is easy to navigate, with two restroom stops along the way. Guests are encouraged to bring a flashlight and a camera, with night shots often revealing the unexpected.
This October, combine history, exercise, and the South’s premier paranormal experience. Visit roswellghosttour.com to reserve your spot as bookings fill quickly as Halloween approaches.
“October is the ideal time to experience the Roswell Ghost Tour! Tickets are $20, with tours beginning
at the gazebo in Roswell Town Square. Stroll Canton Street before or after for dining and sights, turning your evening into the perfect date night or a memorable outing with friends.”
A TOUCH OF CANADA
EXPLORING PARKS, TRAILS AND WILD GAME
CUISINE CIRCLE TO NORTH FULTON
ARTICLE BY JEFF FISCHER
Recently I toured Alberta, Canada which included several national parks as well as the Athabasca Glacier and Lake Louise. The dramatic peaks, turquoise lakes, and glacier hikes made for an unforgettable experience. And while the Canadian landscape is truly amazing as well as the unique wild game cuisine, we're fortunate that we have a little bit of Canada right here in our backyard.
The Georgia Piedmont may not have towering summits, but its local parks offer outdoor escapes that blend natural beauty with history and recreation. The Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell is a perfect starting point, with interactive exhibits, wildlife encounters, and scenic boardwalk trails along the river. Just a few minutes away, Vickery Creek at Old Mill Park showcases rushing waterfalls, the historic Roswell Mill ruins, and a covered pedestrian bridge, making it one of the area’s most photographed hiking spots. Families often gather at Riverside Park, where open fields, a playground, and riverfront trails provide space for picnics, festivals, and leisurely walks. Down the road, Azalea Park is a hub for kayaking, paddle boarding, or simply enjoying the peaceful views of the Chattahoochee. For those who prefer cycling or long-distance hiking, Big Creek Park and the Big Creek Greenway offer miles of shaded paved trails, perfect for biking, running, or spotting wildlife like deer and herons.
Adding to Roswell’s outdoor treasures, Don White Memorial Park is a favorite for river access, whether you’re launching a kayak or casting a fishing line. Willeo Park, a smaller gem, provides serene riverside views and is especially popular with bird watchers and nature photographers. For a wooded retreat, Leita Thompson Memorial Park offers a mix of shaded walking trails, a peaceful pond, and off-leash areas for dogs, making it a well-loved spot for both hikers and pet owners.
And for a taste of “Canada,” try the following restaurants that feature unique cuisine and wild game from the great outdoors. Ted’s Montana Grill (Alpharetta) is best known for its bison dishes, from hearty burgers to perfectly seared steaks. Vin 25 (Roswell) combines rustic charm with a wine bar atmosphere, often pairing seasonal wild game specials with carefully curated vintages. Oak Steakhouse (Alpharetta) elevates

TRUTH BE TOLD:
ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN LYNN, ALBRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
Roswell’s dining scene has a new destination where cocktails are crafted with intention, dishes surprise at every turn, and the experience feels both refined and relaxed. Truth Be Told, the city’s newest restaurant and lounge located on Canton Street, brings a fresh perspective with its seven course prix fixe menu, à la carte options, and inventive cocktails.
Behind it is owner Jonathan Yu, who grew up in Roswell and always knew the community would play a role in his story. He was born in Atlanta and raised locally. He attended Oxford College of Emory University and later the University of Georgia. While studying abroad in Italy, Jonathan discovered his love for wine.
“It was in Verona where I really started to appreciate wine and its nuances,” he says. “I have always had an aspiration of owning my own business, and with my passion for wine and spirits, opening a restaurant felt like a natural next step."
Jonathan Yu, owner Truth be Told
BUILDING THE CONCEPT
Roswell, with its welcoming community and small town charm, seemed like the ideal setting to bring the idea to life.
“This city has long held a special place for me and my family and I wanted to bring a destination where craft cocktails are treated with the same artistry and intention I have experienced in cities around the world,” Jonathan says. “At my core I am a host at heart. I wanted to create a space that has the flavors and elegance that I’ve seen in my travels.”
The name, Truth Be Told, has its own story.
“We knew we wanted to do a craft cocktail concept but didn’t know what to name it. We came up with a long list of names and phrases in a bunch of different languages but nothing was sticking,” Jonathan recalls. “By the third day of brainstorming, we were getting a little frustrated and dad said to me, ‘Jonathan, truth be told…’ It was there that I cut him off and said, ‘Hold on, you might be onto something.’ Truth be told, I never learned what he was going to say but we had the name for our restaurant.”
Chef, Matt Marcus
THE DINING EXPERIENCE
Truth Be Told offers a hybrid seven course prix fixe menu in which guests select three courses while Chef Matt Marcus curates the rest.
“It is a thrilling showcase of Chef’s whimsical style of cuisine,” Jonathan says. “If you are feeling like a quick bite and drink, we have à la carte options at the bar and on the patio.”
The goal is an elevated journey that never feels intimidating.
“With that in mind, we are creating a fun and relaxed experience with finesse and class," Jonathan explains. "My team spends many hours preparing each ingredient that goes into each dish and drink."
Jonathan recommends the Dragon Fang, a cocktail featuring strawberries fermented for four days, then pureed and frozen into the ice. As it melts, the drink evolves in flavor and texture.
The food is equally inventive. Halibut is pan seared, roasted, and finished with sweet potato, black truffle, lemon balm, and caviar. The Wagyu tri tip is slow cooked, grilled, and paired with tongue shaped into a mosaic, roasted king trumpet mushroom, and a rich table side sauce.
Roswell’s newest restaurant and lounge, Truth Be Told, is where craft cocktails meet whimsical, elevated cuisine. Guests can enjoy a seven course prix fixe menu by Chef Matt Marcus, or explore à la carte dishes at the bar and patio.
Owner Jonathan brings years of experience in fine wine and hospitality, along with a passion for creating memorable moments. Truth Be Told is about more than dining—it’s an experience that feels elegant yet relaxed, elevated yet fun.

ROOTED IN ROSWELL
For Jonathan, it always comes back to community.
“I love Roswell for the community. Roswell hasn’t changed drastically since I was a kid. Of course, there are many new faces and old favorites that are no longer around, but the soul of Roswell is still the same. I am so lucky to be able to open my first restaurant here,” he says.
His hope is simple yet heartfelt. “I hope our guests have a genuinely good time when they are here and they forget about any worries or anything other than their experience. While they are with us, they should want for nothing.”
Truth be told, Roswell has a new dining experience worth savoring.

Roswell raised a glass this summer to the 10th anniversary of Summer Sippin’, presented by Roswell Inc. and Visit Roswell, and supported by presenting sponsor Gas South.
What started a decade ago as a way to spotlight local dining has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated annual traditions, this year marking the biggest yet.
With 61 restaurants and establishments participating, guests were invited to sip, sample, and rate their favorite drinks. Each business created a specialty beverage, something not found on the regular menu, to compete in two categories: non-alcoholic and cocktail. Roswell residents and visitors showed up in full force, casting more than 12,000 votes to crown this year’s winners.
The results are in:
NON-ALCOHOLIC CATEGORY

Best Sip in Roswell 2025: Mashawi
COCKTAIL CATEGORY

NORTH END AND DEEP ROOTS WINE MARKET
HOSTED AN ELEGANT SINEGAL WINE DINNER
HIGHLIGHTING ARTISTRY, SEASONAL COOKING, AND UNFORGETTABLE PAIRINGS.
ARTICLE BY KATHRYN RADTKE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALBRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
On August 28, 2025, guests gathered for an intimate wine dinner that paired the elegance of Sinegal Estate Wines with inventive seasonal dishes from Chef Sam Adams of North End. Presented in partnership with Deep Roots Wine Market, the evening offered limited seating and celebrated the artistry of pairing food and wine.
The evening began with a crisp Details Sauvignon Blanc, North Coast 2022, setting the tone with balance and freshness.
The first course featured Sinegal Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley 2022, alongside a seared scallop and stonefruit gazpacho. Layers of peach, plum, and watermelon were brightened with thyme and extra virgin olive oil, creating a dish as vibrant as its pairing.
The Details Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County 2021 then accompanied mushroom-stuffed calamari. Earthy portabella and shiitake mushrooms, combined with spinach, feta, and a rustic tomato ragù, matched beautifully with the Cabernet’s structure and richness.
A playful third course followed—a crispy pork belly taco drizzled with peach glaze and napa slaw, paired with Sinegal Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley 2022
The evening concluded with a decadent sous vide lamb shank served with roasted brussels sprouts, acorn squash, and smoked tomato couscous, elevated by the power and finesse of Sinegal Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley 2021
This special dinner is another way we in which will be many future collaborations with Deep Roots Wine Market in Roswell.
If you drive through Dillard, Georgia, a blinkand-you-miss-it town tucked into the folds of the Southern Appalachians, you might catch the scent before you spot the source. Sweet hickory smoke drifts over the road, pulling you toward a low-slung building with picnic tables out front and a hand-painted sign: Blue Hound Barbecue. Behind the pit, you’ll usually find Kyle Bryner. Locals call him Kyle. Food Network calls him the Master of ‘Cue.
The nickname “Mountain Man” came during the 10-week televised barbecue competition, where Bryner’s focus on Southern Appalachian flavors set him apart from a crowded field of nationally-acclaimed grill masters. Week after week, he leaned on the kind of food he knows best while tapping into his creativity: New Delhi Hot Chicken, Grilled Texas Quail over Creamed Corn, Blackberry Dumplings, a Sorghum Glazed Pork Tenderloin Sandwich, just to name a few.
“I just did what I always do,” Bryner says. “Good meat, good smoke, and letting the flavors speak for themselves.”
ARTICLE BY GRACIE WAYLOCK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREEN OLIVE MEDIA
The competition threw every obstacle it could at him, including surprise ingredients, split-second decisions, timers that seemed to tick down twice as fast on camera. But Bryner stayed grounded. He credits that to lessons learned from his late father, who taught him that cooking wasn’t just about feeding people. It was about creating moments. “He taught me to slow down, and take pride in the details,” Bryner says. “Throughout the challenges, I would always lean on what I thought he'd do in the same situation.”
That sense of connection runs through Blue Hound Barbecue, which Bryner co-owns with his high school sweetheart, Erin. The place has a cult following in Rabun County and beyond, thanks to its commitment to preserving Appalachian culture and Kyle's involvement in the local community.
Winning Master of ‘Cue is, for Bryner, as much about the community as it is about the title. “This is a huge win for our little town,” he says. “It proves small-town barbecue belongs on the big stage.” He hosted a finale watch-party at Clayton Baptist Church, complete with a chili cook-off between him and his son Elijah, and a glimmering trophy reveal.
And he’s not slowing down. Bryner is already working toward his next project: a Southern Appalachian cookbook that will share the recipes, stories and traditions he’s spent years collecting. It will be part instruction manual, part love letter to the mountains. “It’s not just recipes,” he explains. “It’s Appalachian history. It’s where the food comes from, and a tribute to the people who taught me to make it.”
The national spotlight might be new, but the man behind the smoker hasn’t changed. Most mornings, you’ll still find him tending the fire before the sun clears the ridge, keeping watch over the coals.
And if you’re lucky enough to catch him there, he might hand you a plate and tell you a story – the kind that sticks with you long after the smoke has faded.

LIFE AT OLD EDWARDS RESERVE:
Where Lakefront Luxury Meets Mountain Charm
Looking for more than just a getaway? Whether it’s a second home, a retirement retreat, or your forever place, you’ll find it here at Old Edwards Reserve at Lake Keowee. This is a private lake and mountain community in Sunset, South Carolina, just three and a half hours from Atlanta.
The development began in 2000 and has grown into a sprawling, residential estate covering over 4,000 acres along the northern region of Lake Keowee. With more than 500 completed homes, it blends mountain and lake living in a way that feels natural and welcoming.
Against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Old Edwards Reserve offers the kind of lifestyle people daydream about. You can spend your days on the water, play a round of golf, or just explore the property at your own pace. It’s not just a place to live, it’s a place to breathe, recharge, and truly connect.
At the heart of the community is the lake itself. There are 3,900 acres of sparkling water with 300 miles of shoreline. Whether you’re boating, paddleboarding, fishing, or just enjoying the view from your dock, it’s easy to relax here. Golfers will love the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, which is challenging, scenic, and just a lot of fun to play.
Old Edwards Reserve recently launched Laurel Village, a new collection of 24 thoughtfully designed 3 and 4 bedroom turnkey cottages. Overlooking Laurel Pond, the cottages surround an 18,000 square foot private putting course, exclusively for homeowners and their guests. This marks the first new homes at the Reserve in 20 years.
General Manager Tim Boeve shared: "We've seen tremendous interest in new development that truly embraces the unique character of our community and the beauty of Lake Keowee. Laurel Village embodies our vision for luxurious, yet harmonious living, and we believe it will quickly become one of our most sought-after enclaves."
Residents have access to all the amenities that make life here so special. From multiple dining options, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, marinas, walking and biking trails, pools, tennis and pickleball courts, fitness and wellness classes, skeet shooting, and a calendar full of social events that bring neighbors together. With staff
on duty across the property, residents and guests feel welcomed and well taken care of, adding to the sense of ease and security here.
A DISCOVERY VISIT: EXPERIENCING LIFE AT OLD EDWARDS RESERVE
My husband, Scott, and I took a discovery visit at Old Edwards Reserve at Lake Keowee to see firsthand what life here is all about. From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a place made for relaxing and enjoying life.
We drove around the property, taking in the lake and mountain views, and immediately noticed how private the community feels, yet welcoming at the same time. We checked into the guest house, part of a beautiful home, where coffee, drinks, and snacks were available in a shared area for guests to enjoy. It was easy to just hang out, chat or just take in the scenery; a casual, low pressure vibe.
Dinner that first night was at Marco Polo, the poolside restaurant with lake views. The next morning, we stopped by The Market, where you can grab everything from coffee to cocktails, enjoy meals throughout the day, or pick up something from the gift shop. It’s also a convenient spot for food and drinks to go.

Cozy, welcoming, and ready for you
As we drove around, we watched people playing pickleball and tennis and caught a glimpse of the baseball field. It served as a reminder that there really is something for everyone here.
While my husband golfed, I hit the fitness center, tried the infrared sauna, got in a workout, and then relaxed in the pool and hot tub. He grabbed lunch at Caddie Corner along the course and later we met back up at the pool and lake, watching boats and floaters drift by before strolling the property and soaking in the peaceful scenery.
That evening, we had dinner at The Orchard House, the Reserve’s 20,000 square foot clubhouse. With casual and upscale dining options and views of the mountains and golf course, it was the perfect way to wrap up the day. Compliments to the chef. The food was truly elevated.
One of the highlights of our visit was seeing the beautiful, new cottages.
"We've had tremendous interest in new development that truly embraces the unique character of our community and the beauty of Lake Keowee,” shared

What really stood out to us was the balance. You can fill your days with activities or just sit back and enjoy the view. The staff is attentive, gracious, and welcoming. The residents are friendly and happy to share their love for the community. You get privacy, but you also feel part of something larger, a vibrant, multi generational community.
Our weekend at Old Edwards Reserve was more than a getaway; it was a taste of a lifestyle that combines luxury, recreation, and connection. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to stay and maybe even make it home.

Why We Love Roswell
From service to sipping cocktails, dining favorites to hidden treasures, these men reveal what makes Roswell unforgettable.
ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
David Johnson
Roswell
City Councilman
Every great city has its champions- those who serve, but also celebrate the place they call home.
When asked what inspires his love for Roswell, the answer is simple: it's the people. Connection began in his own neighborhood, where bonds with neighbors grew into friendships and a deep sense of community. Those early experiences inspired him to run for City Council, allowing him to extend that passion across the entire city. Today, he feels deeply rooted in Roswell because of the relationships and trust he’s built, a living testament to the city’s spirit.
Serving Roswell reveals just how much generosity thrives here. From organizations like Drake House, Family Promise, Groveway Community Group, and CDA, David witnessed firsthand how neighbors consistently step up for one another. Local businesses also play a vital role, places like From the Earth and Table & Main support numerous community causes. These connections demonstrate that Roswell is a tightly woven city, where giving back is part of everyday life.
Community is also celebrated around food and drinks. Bask Steakhouse stands out as one of David's favorite, bringing vibrancy to East Roswell and offering memorable moments, like enjoying a smoked Old Fashioned crafted by Elliot behind the bar. Date nights with his wife, Nicole, often start with a glass of wine at Deep Roots and finish with cocktails at 1920 Tavern—a treasured escape from the bustle of City Council duties and family life.
A perfect Roswell day combines the city’s best experiences, a lively Saturday morning at the Farmers & Artisan Market, brunch at Gracious Plenty or Fellows, family time at Garrard Landing Park, and a romantic evening at Bask followed by karaoke at Chaplin’s. For visiting friends and family, the river and Old Mill Park area are must-sees, with the Chattahoochee Nature Center as a standout hidden gem. Supporting local businesses is part of that rhythm, too. Picking up flowers from Stems on the Move or enjoying authentic Mexican cuisine at Zama, David appreciates the people and places that make Roswell feel alive. In the end, the city’s charm isn’t just in its parks, restaurants, or shops—it’s in the way it nurtures relationships, fosters generosity, and creates a sense of home.

Trummie Patrick
Roswell Rotary President
When asked what inspires his love for Roswell, the answer comes easily: family and community. Roswell’s unique blend of history, tradition, and progress makes it more than just a city, it’s a home. Neighbors, coaches, mentors, and friends embody a spirit of service that reminds him daily why community matters.
Serving Roswell has only deepened that bond. Through Rotary projects, coaching little league, and neighborhood events, Trummie sees firsthand the generosity and resilience of its people. “Every chance to give back strengthens my love for this place,” he says, “and keeps me committed to investing in a city that’s given me so much.”
Food and fellowship are often at the heart of those connections. One favorite spot is Hugo’s, where he and his father shared countless Friday lunches of oysters and conversation. For craft beer, he supports fellow Rotarians at Gate City and Variant, while Deep Roots offers a cozy spot to explore new wines with his wife, Amy.
Trummie's perfect Roswell day blends service, family, and community spirit. Recently, it began with a Rotary 5K along the Chattahoochee benefiting the Fallen First Responder Program, followed by breakfast at Gracious Plenty, a fundraiser at Gate City, tennis with his kids, and an evening out with friends on Canton Street. “It was everything I love about Roswell rolled into one day.”
When welcoming visitors, Canton Street is always first on the list. Its vibrant mix of dining, shopping, and energy captures the very spirit of Roswell. Even a recent Rotary exchange student from Denmark was introduced to her first Southern meal of fried chicken and grits enjoyed under a Georgia night sky.
Supporting local businesses is another passion, from fellow Rotarians at Chattahoochee Animal Clinic to realtors and financial professionals who invest back into the community. And if Roswell has a hidden gem, it’s the schools—public and private alike—that create a nurturing, diverse environment for the next generation.
For him, Roswell is more than where he lives—it’s where he belongs.

Nick Porche
Business owner and City Council candidate
When asked what inspires his love for Roswell, he states, Roswell has a charm all its own. The city’s unique blend of welcoming families, thriving businesses, and top-rated schools is what inspires love and keeps him rooted here. Roswell feels like a destination in itself—whether you’re raising children, building a business, or simply looking for a community that makes you want to stay awhile.
Nick's connection to the city has deepened through years of service. For seven years, he has been an active part of the Parent Teacher Organization at Sweet Apple Elementary, taking on multiple roles like PTO President. That time allowed him to help beautify the school, support teachers and staff, and—most importantly— see the smiles that come from serving others. Beyond school walls, his support extends to important local nonprofits like the Max Gruver Foundation, which works to prevent hazing, and the Foster Care Support Foundation, dedicated to helping children in need. Service has not only enriched Nick's life, but also strengthened his ties to Roswell’s wider community.
When it comes to dining, Grana holds a special place. From the signature meatball flight to the joy of seeing a fellow school parent bring one of Atlanta’s favorite restaurants to Roswell, it’s a place where food and community intersect. For drinks, Deep Roots is his go-to—a warm, welcoming space where sampling wines and sharing conversations feels a little like “where everybody knows your name.”
A perfect Roswell day blends food, shopping, and leisure. It begins with coffee and brunch at The Vick or Gracious Plenty, followed by a stop at Linen & Flax for home décor and wardrobe finds. An afternoon might include a frose at The Standard, a stroll through Vinings Gallery, and a visit to Roswell Town Square and Artisan Design Studio. The day ends with a family dinner on the patio at Table & Main, savoring Roswell’s charm. When friends or family visit, Nick brings them to the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s River Boardwalk Trail—an ideal spot to catch up while surrounded by beauty. He also loves supporting local businesses like Buff City Soap, Findlay Rowe Gift Shops, and Stems on the Move. And when it comes to hidden gems? He insists that BASK is a must—an exquisite steakhouse perfect for a special night out.

Kurt Wilson
Roswell Mayor
Roswell has always been home for Kurt and his wife, Stacey. It's where they raised their four daughters, rooted in the city’s natural beauty and rich history. That deep connection fuels his leadership today: protecting what makes Roswell special while ensuring it thrives for generations to come and remains a vibrant, prosperous, family-centered community that honors the past and builds an even stronger future.
Serving as mayor has given him a front-row seat to the heartbeat of Roswell. Each conversation reveals what matters most: parents wanting safer streets, seniors seeking security and connection, business owners investing in growth, and volunteers calling for accountability. Listening to those voices has sharpened his focus on delivering results and building what he calls “the best family community in America.”
Food and gathering places are part of that story too. For more than 25 years, Alessio’s has been a go-to for Kurt and Stacey, a place woven into their family’s fabric. Amalfi, once known as Salvatore’s, carries the same sense of tradition. And with a smile, he admits he still misses Rhea’s, a burger joint he insists served one of the best hamburgers in the world.
When it comes to relaxing, he enjoys The Corkhaus across from City Hall, a spot where he can share a glass of wine, a cigar, and conversation with neighbors. For him, it's less about the ritual and more about perspective: staying grounded and connected to the community he serves.
A perfect Roswell day, he says, balances everything the city offers, breakfast at Fellows, a walk along the River Park trails, lunch on Canton Street, and ending the day with neighbors and friends. Soon, that will also include
Roswell’s new Entertainment District, bringing fresh energy and pride to East Roswell.
When guests come to town, the river is always the first stop, followed by visits to Roswell’s historic treasures and landmarks that showcase the city’s heritage and charm. Local businesses like Brown’s Jewelers also stand out, a family-owned staple for generations and one that always makes Stacey smile.
Looking ahead, what excites him most is momentum. Long-delayed projects are finally moving forward. Jobs are coming. More people continue to choose Roswell as home. For Kurt, the future is about results, not rhetoric. It is about promises made and promises kept, and a city where every generation can feel connected, supported, and proud to call Roswell home.

SUMMIT SPINE & JOINT CENTERS IS NOW SEEING PATIENTS IN ROSWELL
ARTICLE BY ROSWELL
DR MARRERO, WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN YOUR PRACTICE IN ROSWELL, AND WHAT MAKES THIS COMMUNITY SPECIAL TO YOU?
When the opportunity to open in Roswell came along, it felt like the perfect fit. Over the years, my wife Dr Barroso and I lived in different parts of Atlanta and talked about making Roswell/Alpharetta our home. After several years in Florida, this chance brought us back to the exact community we had always imagined raising our family. Roswell is special because of its welcoming, family-centered atmosphere and strong sense of community, we’re grateful to be part of it both personally and professionally.
HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND IN PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION SHAPE THE WAY YOU CARE FOR PATIENTS?
My background is centered on helping people live their lives to the fullest. Instead of only treating symptoms, I look at how an injury or condition impacts everyday life—whether that’s working, playing with kids, or enjoying hobbies. My goal is to design care that not only relieves pain, but also restores confidence, independence, and joy in movement.
WHAT FUELS YOUR PASSION FOR HELPING PEOPLE RECLAIM THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE?
Movement has always been central in my life—through my background in water polo and my wife’s in dance. We’ve seen firsthand how exercise creates strength, confidence, and connection. That’s why helping patients move freely again is so meaningful. I want them to rediscover the same fulfillment that comes from doing what they love.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PRACTICE TO SOMEONE NEW?
We listen closely, create personalized care plans, and focus on more than pain relief—we help restore function, confidence and quality of life. Because this is also our home, serving our neighbors and community makes our work even more rewarding.
SHARE ONE MESSAGE FOR ROSWELL:
