Celebrating Women

I don’t know about you but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives. I am especially blessed to have so very many female friends who inspire me daily with their strength, determination and love they share with the world.

And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. You can read about many of these women in our pages this month as we shine a light on those female leaders in and around our community and beyond sharing their gifts and talents and inspiration.  That’s one of my favorite parts of this role - connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Roswell's women.

They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Hope to see you around Roswell soon and keep supporting local, it's the heartbeat of our city.

BE THE VOICE:

A Decade of Empowering Students to Speak Up and Stand Out

ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KYLE GORDON & CLAIRE BECKNELL

For the past decade, Be THE Voice (BTV) has been more than just a program—it’s been a movement. Launched in 2015 as a student-led initiative, BTV has transformed school cultures across Georgia and North Carolina by promoting kindness and inclusion. This milestone anniversary is a testament to the voices that have made a lasting impact.

Founded by Roswell Rotary Club members Debbie Cwalina and Michael Schoppenhorst, BTV has been a game-changer. In Georgia’s fourth largest school district, the 28 schools involved in the program experienced a substantial decline in bullying incidents from 2021 to 2023. Compared to schools not in the program, there was a 95% reduction in elementary schools, a 77% decrease in middle schools, and a 91% drop in high schools.

Dr. Chris Matthews, Assistant Superintendent of Fulton County Schools, has seen the difference firsthand. “BTV is a partner we have used to build compassion and advocacy with our students. Schools and principals overwhelmingly support this program.”

BTV gained international recognition as a top 35 changemaker at the 2024 .ORG Impact Awards.

Christy Thomas said her daughter loves leading in BTV. "Be THE Voice invites action. We tell our children to be kind, to stand up

for what’s right, to look out for one another—but BTV gives them real examples, peer support, and the confidence to act."

Fauzia Sadiq's child is also a BTV student leader. "BTV is especially relevant in today’s social climate. There is a lot of impact on mental health, and having a positive peer-driven program like BTV can really enable our kids to be more empathetic and kind and, most importantly, know that they are not alone."

Fulton County Schools is doubling participation this fall, giving more students access to BTV’s inspiring videos and activities.

Cwalina reflects on the journey: “We started with the belief that students have the power to create real change. Seeing that belief turn into measurable results has been incredibly rewarding. We’re just getting started.”

Nikka Shae: Redefining Lifestyle

Influencing with Authenticity and Joy

Step into the vibrant world of Nikka Shae, the powerhouse behind Oh! Nikka , where every moment is an opportunity to celebrate. Since 2011, Nikka has captivated audiences with her vibrant personality, authentic storytelling, and knack for finding the extraordinary in everyday experiences. Her journey into the influencer world began shortly after moving from Houston to Atlanta in 2010. Documenting her transition, exploring local events, and connecting with like-minded individuals became the foundation for her thriving digital presence.

What started as a creative outlet evolved into a full-fledged career when her audience grew and brands came knocking. “The moment I landed my first paid partnership, I realized this could be more than a hobby,” Nikka recalled. Today, she’s a sought-after content creator and the driving force behind platforms like Drink Dine Do and Little Blue Box Brunch . Followers turn to her for tips on dining, lifestyle trends, and embracing joy in everyday moments.

“I’m selective about the brands I partner with,” she admitted. “They must align with my values and resonate with my audience.”

For aspiring influencers, her advice is clear: consistency is key. “Post regularly, invest in quality visuals, and engage genuinely with your audience,” she advised. Nikka also stresses the importance of evolving with trends while maintaining your unique voice. “Authenticity will always be the cornerstone of successful influencing,” she added.

Looking ahead, Nikka envisions exciting changes in the world of influencing. “Influencers are becoming more multifaceted, combining content creation with things like product lines, podcasts, or even hosting,” she explained. With advancing technology, she predicts immersive experiences like augmented reality will play a bigger role. But one thing remains constant: “Authenticity will always be the cornerstone of successful influencing because audiences value genuine connections above all.”

TARA HEATON’S BEST-SELLING MEMOIR IS A POWERFUL STORY OF RESURRECTING LOVE AND LAUGHTER AMIDST UNRELENTING HEARTACHE

down with late-night porch swing confessions, and daring to dream again—even while her world was still burning.

Tara Heaton appeared to be living the American dream: three healthy children, a loving husband, a rewarding career, and a joyful home. Without warning, everything changed when her middle daughter, Caroline, was struck by a virus that led to severe encephalitis, leaving her with a seizure disorder that gradually impairs cognitive function. At 12 years old, the confident, spirited girl Tara knew began to slip away—taking with her the joy that once permeated the family’s home.

From the onset, Tara refused to surrender. Today, Tara Heaton’s memoir, Life Minutes: Igniting Joy from the Fire of Heartache, is rewriting the narrative on turmoil, tenacity, and the power of truth. Both raw and radiant, the memoir has quickly become a #1 New Release on Amazon and brilliantly invites readers to witness a mother’s relentless fight to save her child—and the profound inner transformation that unfolded in the process.

FIGHTING FOR JOY IN THE SHADOWS

What makes Tara’s story so remarkable isn’t just the hardship she endured—it’s the joy she found within it. Her book pulses with heart-wrenching moments that are surprisingly humorous and somehow relatable to any mother. She invites us into her world of seizing joy: dancing barefoot in the kitchen to Van Morrison, letting her guard

Tara describes her journey not as a fall from grace, but a climb toward something greater. “Heartache is not heartbreak,” Tara explains. “We can repurpose pain to make room for new depths of freedom, love, and joy.” Life Minutes captures the brutal reality of a mother-turned-warrior, driven by a primal need to restore her daughter’s health. “The flame that I discovered on a diving board at nine years old fuels me today,” she writes. “I will stop at nothing.”

FROM GRIT TO GRACE

Tara’s story goes beyond the relentless fight to stop epilepsy from damaging her daughter’s brain and stealing her dreams. Life Minutes explores the quiet unraveling of her marriage, the guilt of failing her other children, and the spiritual reckoning of faith in crisis. With piercing honesty, she reveals how she kept going—not by pretending to be okay, but by deciding to tell the truth. “I have been wasting my fighting spirit on fighting off my truth and denying human connection,” she admits. In doing so, she uncovers a powerful message: resilience isn’t about being unbreakable. It’s about letting the cracks become conduits for light.

A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS

readers will see that we cannot wait for the absence of pain to embrace laughter and love. She says, “What a waste of life minutes. We could be waiting a lifetime.”

Tara Heaton is also an entrepreneur, and as the founder of En Pointe Communication, Tara has trained CEOs, healthcare providers, and educators to lead with empathy and influence, communicate with authenticity, and connect through vulnerability and truth. Yet it is through Life Minutes that she shows her deepest strength—not as a professional, but as a mother, a woman, and a human being who dares to live fully, even when life doesn’t go as planned.

THE POWER OF LIFE MINUTES

In Life Minutes, Tara reminds us that even in moments of darkness, we hold the power to choose light. Her story isn’t wrapped in a neat, happy-ending bow—but it is filled with hard-won wisdom, hearty laughter, and a kind of hope that lingers long after the final page. As Tara often says, “We can’t keep waiting for the storm to pass. We must pull on our boots and dance in the rain.”

Roswell Rotary Builds Access for All at Nature Center

On November 17, 2024, Roswell Rotary Club (RRC) took their weekly meeting on the road to the Chattahoochee Nature Center (“CNC”). The purpose was to celebrate RRC member Gordon Owens’ year as District 6900 Governor for 2024-2025 and his dedication to grass roots, hands on service projects. Gordon commented, “This is exactly what I love most about Rotary. Projects where people show up and come together to make the community better for all.”

Roswell Rotary Club supports Chattahoochee Nature Center in many ways including club members who sit on the board, regularly volunteer, are CNC members, donate financially, help to maintain the Unity Garden, and relish the opportunities to enjoy the beauty and calmness of nature and wildlife that the Chattahoochee Nature Center offers. A picnic at the Nature Center is such a treat for couples, families, residents recharging from work, retirees and school field trips, but had not been possi ble for someone in a wheelchair. And this is where Roswell Rotary Club stepped up.

The RRC in partnership with CNC, gathered volunteers and supplies to build 6 ADA-accessible picnic tables. The project was funded through a $5,000 Rotary District 6900 Competitive grant, along with additional support from a local business TechniPower , whose generous donation helped bring the vision to life. Each table proudly displays a commemorative plate with the RRC name, signifying the club’s commitment to inclusivity and community service. And the ADA accessible picnic area proudly displays the Rotary Rest Stop sign.

A QR code on the sign allows visitors to learn more about Rotary and their service in the community and the world. The rest stop is also located and named on the visitor’s maps given to over 100,000 people who annually enter this venue, so RRC is very visible- helping the space stand as a reminder of Rotary’s mission and commitment to enhancing public spaces for all to enjoy.

Says Nancy Alterman , RRC President 2024-2025, “We are so happy that those in our community who use a wheelchair and also love nature and wildlife now have this beautiful accessible picnic area to share the renewing power of nature with their friend s and family. “

Roswell Rotary Club, part of Rotary International, is a service club with over 200 members committed to doing good locally, regionally and internationally. We meet for lunch almost every Thursday at the Roswell Area Park Community Activity Building at 12:00. Come check us out. No invitation or reservation… just walk in! GRIEVING LIKE GRIEVING LIKE

WARRIORS

CARVING SPACE TO GRIEVE BECAUSE EVEN SUPERHEROES NEED TO RETREAT TO THEIR BAT CAVES.

Walking towards the covered bridge, I watch the other Warrior Moms hug and laugh, something they do easily. A photoshoot for our new book Grieve Like a Mother, Survive Like a Warrior, I feel excitement and pride. I know how difficult these chapters were to write. Black letters on a white page make our reality more stark: our children died. Yet, we don turquoise capes this photoshoot day, holding hands, laughing at the silliness but gaining strength from one another.

I remember walking into my first Warrior Moms’ meeting and thinking I was in the wrong place. It sounded like a fun dinner party. Could this be right? I peeked in, and a mom greeted me with a giant hug and said, “You must be Michele. We hate that you’re here but are glad you found us.” I knew these were my people. Meeting monthly, the Warrior Moms of North Atlanta have potluck dinners, share stories, and then end the evening circling up to talk about our children who died. Tears and sometimes deep sobs—none of us have to say a word if we don’t want to. It’s a club no one wants to join, and the pain is real.

We are grateful to Christi Howard and Christine McHenry, who met with Cathy Semeria and other grieving moms for dinner in December 2017. Christine posted a picture on Facebook, and many moms reached out to ask when they’d meet next. Christi created a Facebook group, chose the next date, and named it Warrior Moms. Our gratitude for them is endless as these women intentionally share grief and find joy.

At one meeting, Christine suggested we write a book, and many agreed. We had a weekend retreat, writing drafts to share at the firepit, and lighting paper lanterns to float across the lake, symbolizing the loss of a child. We sang Coldplay’s Fix You, crying when we hit the lyrics, “Lights will guide you home, ignite your bones, and I will try to fix you.” We shared our chapters, and the book journey began.

As an English teacher, I offered to read the chapters and figure out the book’s format. Most moms didn’t consider themselves writers and felt vulnerable. I was honored to shape the pages, knowing the tears that dropped while writing them. I created mini-workshops and a writing retreat to help capture their children’s spirits, allowing readers to see them in action and bring strategies to life with narratives. It was hard work. Watching the cursor blink, trying not to break apart, felt cruel at times.

I knew publishing a book required a social media presence. Podcasts were one avenue, so I asked Santa for podcast equipment and let the Warrior Moms know. Two months passed with no takers. Another Warrior Mom, Amy Durham, texted, “Let’s do this. I’m in!” The next week, we sat in the Alpharetta library with microphones and a sound mixer. It was thrilling and terrifying, but we felt pulled to make it happen. In just a year, we had over 15,000 downloads in 55 countries. The interest humbles us.

Looking back at our photos from that March day, some might wonder why superheroes are on our book cover. Surviving the loss of a child is a pain words cannot express. We crawl into our beds, scream, and cry behind closed doors. Yet we also get up to be moms to our surviving children, and wives to grieving husbands, while maintaining jobs, friendships, bills, and housekeeping. None of these tasks are superhuman, but paired with sorrow, they sure feel that way.

We wanted our book cover to show the fierceness of a grieving mom and the need for each other, a softness that gives us superhuman empathy. I see Rae Ann Gruver speak about hazing risks for her Max. Jenny Stanley fights for car safety for children; Sydney is proud. Cathy Semeria mentors college students, being the spark in the dark like her Tini. Robyn Willis fights for fire safety, keeping Shaun and Morgan’s memory alive. Dele Rech’s foundation for Daniel reminds us to get outdoors and do good for others. Lisa Raber and Amy Durham raise funds for addiction recovery

Warrior Mom, Michele Davis, is accompanied her former student, Slater Nalley at his audition. American Idol discovered Slater’s TikTok video, and they invited him to audition, Slater turned Michele's poem it into a song, "Traces of You", was performed at his American Idol audition, where he earned a golden ticket.

in honor of Keaton and Alec. Brandi Couey keeps Cole’s memory alive with fundraisers, Emily Simmons honors Darren online, and Joan Wasser supports equine projects for her daughter Alex. Christi Howard speaks about the importance of organ donation, honoring Ashley, and Christine McHenry donates scholarships in honor of their athlete Jamie. I host a pick-up lacrosse game, honoring Carter. They give back to their communities who helped them breathe again.

We wrote the book we wished we had in those early months and years. It tells the truth about the terrible pain and dark days, but more importantly, about strategies we use to seek sunshine, go on hikes in the rain, and have deep laughter with friends and family. It doesn’t follow the five stages of grief and doesn’t sugarcoat the journey. We give firsthand accounts of how we live in the ‘and’ of sorrow and joy, anger and happiness. Sometimes, we force ourselves to get out of bed for a child’s soccer game, but we also give ourselves the grace to “feel the feels,” as my co-host Amy says. We may need a full day to sleep after an incredible vacation because while we had fun, the wishing and missing we pushed down is exhausting. So, we carve space to grieve because even superheroes need to retreat to their bat cave.

There’s something so special about gathering around the table with the people you love—especially when there’s a beautiful, refreshing drink to share. This rosé sangria is light, vibrant, and bursting with freshness. Sweet strawberries, tart kiwi, and juicy blackberries mingle with fragrant basil and a splash of Lillet Rosé, creating the perfect balance of fruit, citrus, and floral notes. Letting everything chill together in the fridge allows the flavors to meld, making each sip even more delicious.

• 6 oz Blackberries

• 6 oz Kiwi Wheels

• 4-5 Basil Sprigs

• 8 oz Lillet Rosé

BYTE25:

A Night of Innovation, Recognition, and Transformation

The Computer Museum of America has entered a bold new era, officially rebranding as the Mimms Museum of Technology and Art. The announcement came at BYTE25, the museum’s signature fundraiser. The event celebrated innovation and legacy, with a Hall of Fame induction, a new exhibit reveal, and a night of technology-driven experiences.

BYTE25 recognized three trailblazers whose contributions shaped the digital world. Dr. David Bader revolutionized high-performance computing with his work on Linux-based supercomputers.

Dan Bricklin, hailed as the “Father of the Spreadsheet,” changed business forever with VisiCalc. And John Yates, a leader in technology law, helped build Atlanta’s thriving tech ecosystem. Each inductee took the stage to reflect on their achievements and the future of innovation.

With its rebranding as the Mimms Museum of Technology and Art, the institution signaled its expansion beyond computing history to explore the intersection

of technology and creativity. Founder Lonnie Mimms shared his vision for the museum’s next chapter, ensuring its role as a hub for education and inspiration.

Guests at BYTE25 received an exclusive first look at groundbreaking artifacts and the unveiling of the stunning Salvador Dalí exhibit, featuring signed prints by the legendary artist. The event also showcased a cutting-edge technology exhibit with interactive displays and rare artifacts, reinforcing the museum’s commitment to preserving history while embracing the future.

Television personality, actor, and author Tom Clark brought energy and humor as the evening’s emcee and auctioneer. Attendees enjoyed “byte”-sized delicacies, signature cocktails, a spirited auction, live music by The Real Acoustic Soul, dancing, networking and a chance to mingle with tech industry leaders.

BYTE25 wasn’t just a night of reflection—it was a launchpad for the future, proving that the story of technology is still being written, one byte at a time.

DESIGNING DIFFERENTLY

Walk Your Plans Atlanta is now in Roswell

WALK YOUR PLANS

Mary Atchley and partner Mark Brown bring your plans to life BEFORE you build!

Every now and then, one of those ideas come along that makes so much sense you wonder where it has been all this time and why it hasn’t come along sooner. Walk Your Plans is that fresh new concept. Meet Mary Atchley of Walk Your Plans Atlanta.  She and her partner, Mark Brown opened their franchise last year in Roswell, Georgia

Mary had been thinking about entrepreneurship for the next chapter in her career after having years of corporate experience in telecommunications. When a Walk Your Plans ad popped up on her phone. It immediately caught her attention. The next thing she knew, she and Mark were flying to Ohio to meet with the founders of the company. A short time later they became the owners of the third Walk Your Plans location in the country.

What is Walk Your Plans, you ask? Well, if you have ever built a home, you know how difficult it can be to envision how everything you are looking at on your house plans will actually work in real life once it is built. Walk Your Plans brings your house plans to life by projecting them onto the floor and walls of their 6,000 sf showroom. It allows you to experience how the space in your

new home will flow. You can see which areas are too tight, cabinets that are too high or a room size that isn’t nearly as large as you thought. Most importantly, it helps determine what doesn’t work like you thought it would.

By walking through your plans before you build, you are able to make changes in the design phase instead of during construction.  Most projects have 10-20 changes with the average change order cost starting around $2,000. If you make a single change while walking your plans, the session has paid for itself. Most of the time, the session will likely save you thousands of dollars. The value of Walk Your Plans is not just significant, it’s a game changer!

ARTICLE BY BILL HOBAN, CENTURY21 CONNECT
Walk Your Plans Mary Atchley & Mark Brown

They have become a great resource for me in my work.  As a realtor & landscape architect, I send all of my clients who are building new homes to meet with Mary to walk their plans as well as their outdoor space.

Many smart homebuilders, architects, interior designers, developers and others have started incorporating Walk Your Plans into their offerings because it is such a great value and alleviates so many potential headaches.

And don’t think Walk Your Plans is just for residential projects. Mary and Mark have had clients from commercial and office to restaurants, golf clubs and more. They even have a client in the aviation industry walking their plane!  One notable story Mary

shared was when they had restauranteurs visit with their head chef, kitchen staff and front of house team to walk the plans for their new space.  In just one hour, they had completely reconfigured the 1200 sf restaurant from its original design. They saved so much time and money realizing the potential flow issues before construction took place.

Mary and Mark have also gotten connected in the community.  They have most recently partnered with Sunshine on a Ranney Day to help better design for accessibility in their projects. The benefits are endless.

Walk Your Plans Atlanta is a great addition to Roswell.  Visit them at:  http://www.walkyourplansatlanta.com and schedule a tour today!

Women in Roswell who have hearts to serve

Parlour of Spice

Parlour of Spice is more than a condiment brand—it’s a tribute to my heritage and family values. My first product, a bold yet versatile hot sauce, is inspired by home. It’s simple, all-natural, and pairs with everything.

The heart of this brand is my parents. They left Trinidad to give my sister and me the opportunity to chase our dreams. My love for cooking and this recipe come from my dad, while my entrepreneurial spirit comes from my mom.

For years, this idea lived in my mind. Then, last year, something shifted—my heart, mind, and gut aligned, giving me the courage to take the leap. Signs along the way affirmed my path, including the quote, “If not me, who? If not now, when?”

This journey is about legacy—showing my children what’s possible and proving that women can be dynamic and multifaceted. Food has always connected us, and I’m proud to share this sauce as a reminder that a little spice makes everything nice.

Knuckies Hoagies

Both of my sisters are entrepreneurs, and a few years ago, I made the move to Roswell. At that time, I was ready to step away from the classroom and embrace a new challenge. That’s when my sister Stacy invited me to join her in the exciting journey of opening Knuckies Hoagies in Roswell.

Growing up, sharing meals was more than just eating, it was how we connected with family and friends, a way to serve others, and an expression of love and care. We hope our guests feel that same warmth when they hear me say, “We just want to feed you.”

Opening this restaurant has come with its challenges, but it has also been an incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the community. Becoming a business owner has opened so many doors, leading to meaningful friendships and unforgettable experiences through my involvement in the community. I feel truly blessed. Roswell is my home.

Building Bright Futures, One Child at a Time

CEO

& Executive Director CDA

The Children’s Development Academy (CDA), a nonprofit preschool in Roswell, has provided high-quality early learning for children from low-income families in north Metro Atlanta since 1967. Serving over 200 children annually, CDA prepares them for school while offering families access to affordable childcare – a rare resource in our community. After years in the corporate world, I knew I wanted to return to the nonprofit sector. My three years at North Fulton Community Charities ignited my passion for human services. When the opportunity to join CDA arose, I jumped at it, knowing its mission supports both children and families in profound ways.

I draw inspiration from the great leaders before me, especially CDA’s founders, who saw a need and acted.

A motto I live by: On my desk sits a plaque with a quote from Margaret Mead that I read daily— “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.”

Kimberly Airhart:  Turning Pain into Purpose

Founder Harts of Teal

In 2020, at 41, I was diagnosed with nearly stage 4 ovarian cancer after months of dismissed symptoms. Facing surgery and chemotherapy alone due to COVID, I endured a difficult journey but turned my struggle into purpose. Inspired to raise awareness, my family and I launched Harts of Teal. In 2024, my cancer returned, but after treatment, I’m grateful to have surpassed five years. Now, I’m committed to educating women and ensuring no one faces this battle alone.

Harts of Teal is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to raising awareness of ovarian and gynecologic cancers while supporting diagnosed women. Founded in 2021 after my personal experience, the organization empowers women to recognize symptoms and advocate for their health. We host awareness events, survivor support groups, and our Teal for Teachers campaign has reached 15,500 educators.

Inspired by John 14:1, our motto, Trust God, reminds us that even in hardship, He has a purpose and brings good through suffering.

Stacy Georges: A Mission to Support Families

Special Needs Respite

Stacy Georges, founder of Special Needs Respite, holds a B.A. in Therapeutic Recreation from Purdue University. She and her husband, Tom, understand the challenges of navigating public education for children who need accommodations.

Since 2017, Stacy has worked to support 7,000+ families waiting for state-funded respite care. With the foundation in place, the next step is connecting with private businesses willing to invest in meaningful social change.

Parents often share, “Knowing I can get a break helps me make it through another day.” The reality is harsh—parents of children with special needs are 80% more likely to divorce and face higher risks of isolation, depression, and health struggles.

With the right support, we can change this. By providing much-needed respite care, we give families not just relief but hope. Together, we can make a lasting difference.

Owner and Operator Buff City Soap

Buff City Soap in Roswell offers plant-based home and body products free of detergents, harsh chemicals, and preservatives. After 30 years in public safety as a Flight Medic, Firefighter, and Sheriff’s Deputy, I retired to chase my entrepreneurial dreams—something I never believed was out of reach. Inspired by a former co-worker, the founder of Buff City Soap, I embraced this new chapter, moving from Naples, Florida, to Roswell. I quickly fell in love with the city’s beauty and welcoming spirit.

Transitioning from serving the public to serving guests felt natural, and I’ve cherished building relationships through community events and fundraisers.

When my sister Shannon considered retiring from teaching, I knew I wanted our next adventure to be together. Knuckies Hoagies, a local franchise, was the perfect fit—her gift for connecting with people and my love for hands-on work in the kitchen made us the perfect team. Now, we’re not just business partners but sisters living our dream side by side.

What's Your Number?

Mary Miller Fazio is a Financial Advisor with the Global Wealth Management Division of Morgan Stanley and lives in Roswell

When this question was posed at lunch amongst financial industry work colleagues, years ago, I realized I hadn’t thought about my financial life goals in those terms.  It helped me start thinking about how much I would need to accumulate in wealth to last through retirement years. If you retire at age 65, with life expectancy at 90 years, use a round number, the math suggests you can spend about 4% of your retirement’s nest egg per year over 25 years and remain in a “safe zone.”  To get back to MY number… what should I expect to spend yearly in retirement?  Having more time on my hands, I could enjoy travel and leisure.  When I am less agile later, I might spend less on travel and leisure, but  expenses could be replaced with healthcare costs.

Working in finance, I knew a variable like inflation could effect “back of envelope math,” especially when calculating things over decades.  Taxes and asset allocation are also big swing factors.  Then there is the question of “will the Social Security income be available to me?” Taking an initial crack at coming up with MY number, I tallied up basic living expenses: housing, food, insurance, transportation and utilities, plus reasonable level of discretionary expenses: travel, membership dues, charitable giving, entertainment, clothing, and - stop the presses - what if I have children someday?  That would affect my spend vs. save rate for sure!

GET the planning tools and knowledge to help navigate to get to  YOUR number.

HERE ARE 4 STEPS:

1. Create and stick to a budget

2. Max-out retirement savings

3. Invest and insure yourself wisely

4. Take setbacks in stride

These steps can support your retirement fund to a level where investments could outearn what you spend yearly, growing your passive investment income to perhaps one day replace your earned income. I am happy to share that my husband and I have two sons at Roswell High, and we feel in control of our destiny; well, financially speaking.

ONE FAMILY'S DETERMINATION TO BRING ART AND CULTURE TO ROSWELL

Ann Jackson Gallery

Cat in The Hat - Dr Seuss
After Dark in The Park- Dr Seuss
“Dr. Suess changed my life as a child,” says Valerie Jackson.

An engineer, an artist and a gaggle of kids may be just what it takes for the makings of an unforgettable small town legacy. This may not have been Ann Jackson’s goal when she and her husband decided to take a leap of faith and attend framing school so that they could save money finishing her works of art, but sometimes fate intervenes and puts us right where we should be.

However, the road to fulfilled passion is sometimes long and winding. This road was fraught with corporate job resignations, exploding gun shops, chance meetings and ultimate success. With a quick education on how to pivot in an instant, the Jackson family built a family culture and business in which Roswell King, himself would find pride. With all of this, the Ann Jackson Gallery was born, giving Roswell its chance to brush with greatness and bring world-renowned works of art to downtown, hence, influencing an art explosion in the city.

From selling original works out of her garage to opening her gallery on the Roswell Square, Ann Jackson and her family’s aspirations blossomed into something no one could ever fathom. The family business was thriving so much that Ms. Jackson’s eldest daughter, Valerie felt compelled to quit nursing school and lend her business sense to the family’s endeavors. With all the family’s unique gifts and talents, the gallery was unstoppable.

With Valerie’s parents retiring, she bought the gallery from them in 1986 as they left for a life of sailing. After a gun shop caught fire and blew its top, there was an opening for a new business on Canton Street. “I went up to Canton Street and saw the space and there were these great big windows with the sky up above and I knew this was the place and I moved the gallery to Canton Street”, remembers Valerie.

Here, Valerie and her family would enjoy 36 years of gallery shows, framing beautiful art and

showcasing some of the world’s best pieces. By serendipitous circumstances, The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss by Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) which is housed all over the world by public and private collectors, made its way to the Ann Jackson Gallery. When Valerie got a chance to be a steward of his art, she was thrilled. “Dr. Suess changed my life as a child. I couldn’t get my hands on enough of his books. I just fell in love with Dr. Suess. So, here I was, years later with the opportunity to become a Dr. Suess gallery”, says Valerie.

In addition to the Dr. Seuss collection, the gallery has been host to countless trunk shows showcasing the likes of Renoir, Cassatt, Mick Fleetwood and John Lennon. John Lennon’s white piano graced the gallery at one time as did, “The Lost Weekend: The Photography of May Pang”, which is a collection of candid photos of John Lennon during her 18-month relationship with the singer.

As time went on, the changes to Canton Street, becoming an entertainment district, prompted various moves for the gallery. Eventually, Valerie moved the gallery home where she continues to enjoy hosting private events, shows and framing works of art for her clients in Roswell.

Valerie Jackson and her mother’s gallery continues to be a source of pride for Roswell and so eloquently exudes the ambiance and charm that a small town gone big always hopes to preserve. For a private gallery viewing or framing services please visit:  https://annjacksongallery.com/

ARTICLE BY WENDY EDWARDS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY FR3DER1CK AND LENA SONG

Passions and talents sometimes come together to bring an extraordinary mix of people with shared interests that when working together can bring about something exceptional.  Tara Miller, owner of Aura Salon & Spa knew she was meant to attain success and has spent twenty years perfecting her craft and meeting influential people in the beauty and fashion industry.

Her passion for beauty and fashion took her to many industry events where she had the opportunity to meet like-minded people that spurred her creativity and created inspiration. One chance meeting would have not only a serendipitous effect, but create a lasting bond.

Tara met Killian at one such industry event and they found that they had mutual love for fashion and beauty. Killian has been in high-end fashion in Europe for over a decade and procured, Le Jeune, a luxury boutique and salon where he perfected his skills. Having styled many music artists and high fashion clientele throughout Europe, he built a name for himself in this prominent industry. The chance to collaborate was something that they both felt was in their future. Tara recollects, “The energy and passion between us was absolutely dynamic.”

Tara invited Killian to collaborate with Aura, which would create a unique styling for their clients that was difficult to find elsewhere.

“Killian has a keen sense for high-quality, luxury clothing, as well as the creativity to be on the cutting-edge of the latest fashion trends. Combining this with our knowledge of what the Atlanta market has been missing and the one-of-a-kind vibe that has been cultivated at Aura, it is sure to be a huge success”, says Tara.

Aura and Le Jeune complement one another through a posh, high-end feel. Together, the salon and the boutique located inside the space, are able to offer something special to their clients. Tara states, “Aura and Le Jeune offer the latest and most up-to-date European fashion trends that will help take your wardrobe to the next level!
