As her 2024-25 year as president of Roswell Rotary Club draws to a close, Nancy Alterman is looking back at a successful year of leadership that any corporate executive would have been proud to achieve. With a solid vision, endless energy, a heart of service, and the ability to inspire others to follow and achieve their best, Nancy has had an impact!
“We all love this city so much. And we love the partnership that Roswell Rotary has with the City of Roswell. So my theme this year was energizing Roswell. We wanted people to see our enthusiasm and joy in serving this special community and hoped they would want to join us!” said Nancy as she thought back on her year as president.
And it happened. From her Energizer Bunny logo, to bunny shirts awarded for service, to yard signs showing Roswell Rotary at work, Nancy got the word out across the community. Within the Club, over 90% of the membership participated in a service project this year, blasting the norm of 20% of people doing 80% of the work. Everyone was diving in and making things happen. Her enthusiasm was contagious. Roswell Rotary attracted many new members this year-and was recognized at District 6900 Conference as Membership All Star at the Rotary District Conference.
New projects begun this year will have lasting effects, such as Dementia Friendly Roswell , which increases awareness among restaurants and first responders of the special needs of this group; the Fishing Derby at Roswell Area Park, which brings together multiple generations to learn and play; support for vocational education through the construction of a playhouse for the Drake House ; and the Roswell Rotary Rest Stop at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Other projects were re-energized including serving our seniors, Honor Air flight to DC for veterans, Memorial Day Remembrance at City Hall, Roswell Relays at Roswell High School, and the annual Aubrey Greenway Golf & Bob Hagan Classic Tennis fundraiser.
Nancy’s leadership was recently recognized when she was presented the Sheffield Leadership Award- given annually to Rotary Club presidents who best exemplify and execute the extraordinary leadership traits represented by the Sheffield family.
Thank you Nancy Alterman for your leadership and your energy and for the impact you have had and continue to have in Roswell!

HONORING THESE SAILORS, MARINES AND WOUNDED WARRIORS , JIMMY BUFFET BROUGHT MUSIC, JOY AND UNWAVERING SUPPORT TO THOSE WHO SERVE
ARTICLE BY ED KLAAS
Everyone I know loved Jimmy Buffett and has stories about good times shared at his shows. My memory in the U.S. Navy has nothing to do with music or fun times. It’s a part of his life that most people don’t know, but why I consider him more than just a great musician and entertainer. He is a patriot, hero, and an American treasure.
This occurred toward the end of the Cold War with the former Soviet Union and sounds like something Tom Clancy would have written, but it's a true story. While serving as an Electronic Warfare Technician in mid 1980 aboard the Second Fleet Command Ship, USS Mount Whitney, I participated in Refresher Training off Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after a stint in the Norfolk Shipyards for upgrades.
Training was hot, tiring, grueling, and you had to be alert and balanced because drills came at all hours. You had to be prepared for anything. I thought I was, but there are certain things you can’t anticipate. On an otherwise routine day, one of my shipmates reported highly unusual signals and frequencies that appeared to be transmitting from a Sovietera ballistic missile submarine. As they were emanating from the surface and not moving, rather than from a sub that should be running silent and deep, it was improbable. We figured we were being tested and didn’t panic. The chance of that type of detection was about as likely as seeing a school of mermaids. However, as that class of submarines carried nuclear warheads, torpedoes, and other armaments, we didn’t take it lightly. We noted it in the logbook, got out manuals to do research, and continued to keep an eye on it, but generally dismissed it. Minutes later, a radioman began banging on the door. Announcing he had received a radio message on a civilian frequency from a guy
on a yacht claiming to be Jimmy Buffett who was reporting a Soviet submarine sitting at the surface. He wanted to know if we could confirm it. We then bolted into action.
This was no drill or war game. It was serious. Our senior chief petty officer was alerted and was skeptical but listened intently. He walked into the Combat Information Center to inform the admiral’s watch captain, a Navy legend, Captain James “Red” Best. We waited for the chief to return with instructions and never imagined what was next. Suddenly, the hatch slammed open, and together with our chief was Captain Best. He was known for his salty ways, he was both loved and feared.
“This proud Navy veteran will, more than all his concerts and songs, always remember my brief encounter with this American hero in a way that few others ever have.”
- Ed Klaas
Captain Best wanted to hear firsthand what we knew. When the radioman told him that someone claiming to be Jimmy Buffett reported an unusual but specific sighting, Best exploded!
“If Jimmy Buffett says there is a Soviet sub sitting on the surface, then there is! He knows what he is talking about!” He returned to the CIC to alert our ship’s captain, Larry Lubbs, Second Fleet Commander, Vice Admiral Henry “Hank” Mustin, Navy “royalty” and (at the time) of one of the most famous and decorated military families in history.
What happened next was intense, the most serious moment in my career, and what we trained for. General Quarters was sounded, and all hands manned their battle stations. Mine was on the ship’s main deck, I was responsible for the chaff launcher. It launches electronic countermeasures designed to lure hostile missiles away from ships under attack by creating false targets. It was the stuff you see in movies, and I liked it for the thrill, but mostly because I could get fresh air and a view after being inside the tin can for so long. Monitoring what was going on below deck by radio, I saw with my own

eyes that an impressive yacht was allowed to pull up alongside us, and off stepped Jimmy Buffett, greeted warmly by who I now know to be his longtime and good friend, Captain Best. I could not see it from my position, but was told that Jimmy was escorted directly to the bridge by Best, where he talked to our ship’s captain, and then CIC, where he briefed the senior staff. From my vantage point, I witnessed various U.S. fighters and attack planes moving in. While I couldn’t see it, I was aware that our constant companion supporting the admiral’s flagship, the submarine USS Bonefish, was just below the water’s surface ready. It was undoubtedly keeping close tabs on its Soviet counterpart, which had been forced to surface due to some unknown mass casualty event. (An ironic sidenote is that over a year later, the USS Bonefish suffered explosions and fire in her battery compartment operating in the Caribbean, killing three. The Bonefish surfaced, and orders were given to abandon ship since the fire spread quickly, with dense smoke. She was decommissioned a few months later.)
What happened with that Soviet sub and crew, I certainly don’t know. I’m sure it was unpleasant. I didn’t have a need to know, and there are just certain things you don’t ask. Jimmy eventually disembarked our ship, and I watched his yacht pull away as
we departed. When I returned to my station, my shipmates had questions and accounts for me, as I did for them. They told me they were shocked to see ANY civilian, much less Jimmy Buffett, walking through passageways, especially under the circumstances. I learned over the years that Jimmy Buffett was always a fan of the Navy. He had wanted to go to the Naval Academy and applied to Officer Candidate School but was denied due to a health issue. But his love and support for our military, particularly for the Navy, endured.
In 2018, Jimmy Buffett was presented the highest award that can be given to a civilian by the Secretary of the Navy. The citation read, in part: “For Superior Public Service in recognition of the exceptional and wide-ranging contributions made to the Department of the Navy, Mr. Buffett is an unwavering supporter of the men, women, and families of the Navy and Marine Corps. His dedicated service to our Sailors, Marines, wounded warriors, and civilians ensured that they were provided highly visible support and gratitude that greatly enhanced morale and welfare across the Department.” This proud Navy veteran will, more than all his concerts and songs, always remember my brief encounter with this American hero in a way that few others ever have.
A person can be eating the right foods and exercising regularly, but if they are hormonally unbalanced, most likely they will not achieve their desired results.
How we feel is affected by hormonal imbalances, issues with our gut & digestion, liver function problems, our cortisol levels and insulin resistance, all effect how we feel and function. These are culprits of old age.
The solution is to be hormonally balanced taking out of the equation “for your age”.
We want you to have hormonal levels of a healthy young adult. If we get you feeling younger, you will start moving younger. When you start moving younger you will start looking younger. That coupled with guidance on nutrition and exercise will lead to a longer happier healthier life.
Les Marmitons is a gastronomic and social club of gentlemen who share a common interest in fine food, wine and the culinary arts. Through regular gatherings in professional kitchens members gain knowledge and experience in the planning, preparation, presentation, and dining of various fine cuisines under the direction of a professional chef. Its motto is: Gastronomie et Fraternite – from Friendship to Gastronomy
The tradition of a group of gentlemen inviting culinary professionals to lead them in preparing elaborate meals began in Europe many years ago, and was introduced to North America forty years ago. The word "marmiton" is French and means a kitchen boy, or chef's helper. With the growing interest in food and wine our membership continues to expand and benefit from our traditions of promoting friendship and gastronomy.
Les Marmitons Atlanta inducted in 1996 and its members have prepared over 160 dinners supervised by local chefs. Among the recent guest chefs who include A.J. Jones, with Milton’s, Laz Tenreiro of Lazaro’s Cuban Cuisine in Roswell, Sean Ford with Prime 120, Noah Bazarte of A&M Kitchen, Mike Gambini of North End Kitchen, and Michael Bologna of Vingenzo’s. Les Marmitons members pay an annual membership fee and are provided with a chef’s jacket, apron, and toque which they wear at each dinner.
ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
Prior to each dinner, members review the menu which usually consists of an appetizer, salad course, one or two entrees, and dessert – each accompanied by the evening’s wine program. A fee is charged to cover the cost of groceries and wine.
Attendees are divided into teams, led by a team leader, with the responsibility of preparing, cooking, and serving a specific course under the guest chef’s supervision. Team assignments rotate and members take turns captaining each team. A typical Les Marmitons dinner begins around 5 p.m., with members enjoying wine and appetizers, meeting the guest chef, listening to an overview of the evening's menu, and discussing the timeline for meal preparation and service. During meal preparation, the chef moves around the kitchen, offering guidance and sharing expertise with groups. Members are free to observe different teams to witness the
preparation of other courses. After each course is plated and served, members gather in the dining room to enjoy the food and wine, listen to the team captain describe specifics of the preparation, and receive feedback from the guest chef.
Over the years, the Les Marmitons Atlanta chapter has prepared its dinners in several professional kitchens, including Chattahoochee Technical College, St. David’s Episcopal Church in Roswell, and the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Marietta, which the chapter currently calls “home.” Les Marmitons Atlanta boasts close to 40 members, with half of its members hailing from the Roswell/Alpharetta/Cobb County areas and the balance from.
TIM WYNKOOP, ROSWELL, MEMBER SINCE 2019
"Les Marmitons is as much about fellowship, as it is about cooking. A very dear friend of mine who I've known for 20 years, Hank Kreutzinger, told me about this club that he belonged to where a "bunch of guys get together, drink wine and cook like crazy." I signed up that night! The camaraderie of this club is incredible. A fellow named Scott Hocker was introduced to me by our wives who were friends. He came over to my house one night, drank all my bourbon, and by the time he left, he was ready to join up. He's now our current President!"
"It was from Chef A.J. Jones, currently executive chef at Milton's Cuisine and Cocktails. She taught us how to make a phenomenal Tres Leches cake. It was the most challenging and delicious dessert I've ever prepared. I still dream about it!"

IT’S ADVENTURE TIME WITH “THE PIRATES OF BATHTUB BAY”
ARTICLE BY ROSWELL CITY LIFESTYLE STAFF
“Go have an adventure and use your imagination,” says Tom Clark.
Sitting down with children’s author, actor and TV & radio personality Tom Clark, aka Major Tom
HOW DID YOU GET THE INKLING TO WRITE A CHILDREN’S BOOK?
When the kids were in school, the teacher would ask the parents to pick a book and come in and read to them. I came up with the idea to do a script since I was an actor and gave each of the kids a part, making it more interactive. I was the narrator and they were the players. It went over gangbusters and my wife Donna said I should turn it into a children’s book.
BUT WHY “THE PIRATES OF BATHTUB BAY?”
Well, Pirates was actually the 2nd book I wrote, the first one that the kids started I’ve been rewriting for years. It’s coming out this Fall and I’m excited, but I can’t give away the title just yet. That one is all about teamwork with a side of science and will be for older kids, where Pirates starts at about age 4.
THE THEME OF PIRATES IS ALL ABOUT IMAGINATION AND ADVENTURE. DOES THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS?
Oh yeah. I’ve got 4 of the most creative and imaginative kids on the planet. I am totally blessed. My son Thomas would spend so much time in the tub playing with small toys and as a parent, I would listen in on his adventures with those toys and even though it was mostly the same toys every time, it was always a different story. I feel like today kids have things already done for them with video games available so the scripts are already written. I wanted to get back to letting your mind wander and make it up.
SO TAKE US ON THIS JOURNEY BUT DON’T GIVE AWAY TOO MUCH.
Thomas has a small ship in the tub, the Old Wooden Walrus and with just his imagination and a couple of
other toys, he sets out on an adventure to Bathtub Bay Falls. It’s very dangerous, but he and his crew are searching for a special treasure. He encounters sea creatures, rough seas and more. When I was a kid, it was like being outside and all you had was a stick, box, maybe a pillowcase for a cape, the woods and that was it. Einstein said that imagination is more important than knowledge and that imagination is the language of the soul.
THE CHILDREN’S BOOK REVIEW SAID, “THE PIRATES OF BATHTUB BAY IS NOT JUST A FUN AND FUNNY READ, BUT A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR READERS TO EMBARK ON THEIR OWN IMAGINATIVE ADVENTURES.
I was blown away by those words getting a nice review out of the gate and that’s given me a lot of confidence to finish book #2. I really tried to just write what was inside of me and put myself on the boat to see what kind of adventure I could have.
TALK ABOUT YOUR KIDS AND HOW YOU BALANCED LIFE ON THE RADIO, YOU WERE ALSO AN ACTOR AND YOU HAD TIME FOR WRITING.
To be honest, starting in radio was a fluke. I was finishing college studying Hotel Management, my dad was a Chef and I had a lot of experience in that industry. A contest came up in Atlanta about someone winning a job on the radio on Power 99. I won the contest to become their traffic reporter and Vikki Locke named me Major Tom. From there, a demo tape from radio got me an agent and I started doing some part time acting. Now, all the time I was writing here and there, no books or anything, I would write songs. I started writing comedy for Steve McCoy and Vikki and that’s when things took off. I also did impressions on the radio and even wrote parody songs. I then become Sports director because of my background almost
making it to the major leagues and professional bowling. From there, I also helped produced the show when Rick Stacy took over for Steve so I was writing every day, all day. As for my kids Heather, Courtney, Drew and Thomas, being on the radio made me the cool dad and we got to do a lot of radio station promotions and fun things. I also got to meet a lot of celebs and almost had a date with Julia Roberts but that’s another story.
WHAT
WAS IT ALWAYS PART TIME AND HAVE YOU BEEN IN ANY MOVIES THAT WE’VE SEEN?
Radio eventually went away and I honestly had no choice. My wife encouraged me to go full time with the acting and the timing couldn’t have been better. I was blessed with a ton of roles in TV, Film, Corporate video, Voice-over and print. The kids became actors and made enough money to buy their own first cars and more. My grandson Ben, my son Thomas and I appeared together in a Fathers Day ad for the PGA Superstore a couple of years ago. It was very special. As for movies, just to name a couple, Secretariat, Iron Man 3, Anchorman 2 and Ray with Jamie Foxx. I did get some small roles in TV on shows like Nashville, Council of Dads, Army Wives and others, but my bread and butter was commercial and corporate.
SO, BOOK #2 IS COMING OUT IN THE FALL. ARE THERE ANY MORE AFTER THAT OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU ARE WRITING?
Yes. I’ve got 4 books total in mind, one for each kid. My daughter Courtney is book #2, Drew will be book #3, a coming of age theme and then book #4 for Heather will probably be finished late next year. As for other things I’m writing, a script for a movie I’m working on, and I’m doing my best to get it done by next year. I like the way it’s started, but I feel I’ve been doing only rewrites of scenes for the last 6 months. I’m not giving up, it’s a great challenge and I love it.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD BEFORE WE WRAP THIS UP?
Go have an adventure and use your imagination. Get with your kids, put down the devices and go wild. Our minds are starving for stuff like this but I hope that the Pirates of Bathtub Bay will stimulate the synapses. It’s a great book to read to your kids and do voices and stuff for them. They will get a kick out it. Once you become a sea monster or the captain, you’ll be on the adventure with them and it becomes even more special.

ONE ROSWELL FAMILY SUPPORTS THE COMMUNITY ONE GOLF CART AT A TIME.
What do golf carts, white tigers and hot air balloons all have in common? Ideas that come from the mastermind businessman, Gary Grim the Roswell legacy he has created for the past 40 years.
When he moved to Roswell in 1987 he had procured a lifetime’s worth of knowledge and prowess in the automobile sales industry. Eighty hour work weeks and unrelenting ambition have a penchant for producing a perfect cocktail for success. With amusing gimmicks such as welcoming a traveling circus featuring two ultra-rare white
With this, he and his son Ryan opened Golf Cars of Canton. With daughter Lindsey Schafer running operations, the store quickly became a Black and Gold Elite member with Club Car signifying the highest designation for sales, service and customer support. “We are a small family run business and in Roswell, word of mouth has served us well. The key is to provide exceptional small town service where the customer comes first, our loyal customers tell their friends where to get the best deal and service”, says Lindsey.
“WE TRY TO GIVE BACK AND WE FIND THAT EVERY TIME WE DO, IT COMES BACK TEN-FOLD.”
tigers, helicopter rides and hot air balloon excursions Mr. Grim was well on his way to business fame in Roswell.
However, after owning and selling five top producing Roswell car dealerships, he was ready for something new. He just hadn’t found the perfect product yet. “I rented a home on the beach for a month so that my son-in-law could return from active duty in Afghanistan and relax with family. I got bored of the beach one day and spent $900 for a golf cart for a week. I found myself driving down the road thinking, this is a lot of money to rent a golf cart, there’s got to be more to this than meets the eye”, says Mr. Grim.
With the opening of Golf Cars of Woodstock and the workings of a new location back in Roswell, the business has come full circle. Part of this success has been achieved by giving back to the community. “We love sponsoring “Hole-In-Ones for golf cart giveaways, supporting Must Ministries through fundraisers and working with MakeA-Wish Foundation to see kids smile when we present them with their very own golf cart. We try to give back and we find that every time we do, it comes back to us ten-fold”, Mr. Grim relays.

The Driveway that was Built for Luxury and his Cars
Tucked away in one of Roswell’s most exclusive enclaves, Shahid Khan’s stunning 7,000-squarefoot residence is more than just a luxurious home—it’s a sanctuary for some of the world’s most coveted automobiles. Five of them, in fact.
A self-made entrepreneur in the hospitality industry, Khan’s journey from humble beginnings to a thriving business empire is as awe-inspiring as the multimillion-dollar fleet housed within his estate. But behind the glamour of his exotic car collection lies a lesser-known challenge he faced: a driveway that nearly jeopardized his prized vehicles.
Born in the UAE, Khan relocated to the United States at the age of seven, first settling in Marion, South Carolina, before moving to Powder Springs, Georgia, in third grade. He attended McEachern High School and later enrolled at Chattahoochee Technical College, though his entrepreneurial ambitions led him down a different path. From walking dogs as his first solo job to co-owning a BP gas station with his father in 2006, Khan’s business acumen quickly evolved. He eventually found his niche in hospitality, building a portfolio of seven extended-stay hotels across Georgia. With locations in Marietta, Riverdale, Stone Mountain, Lithia Springs, Lilburn, Jonesboro, and Gainesville, he has redefined affordable lodging without compromising quality. His first property purchase in 2017 laid the foundation for his growing success.
Khan’s real estate journey led him from Douglasville to the prestigious King Road in Roswell, where he found a home that suited his lifestyle and growing car collection. While the property offered the space and privacy he desired, its steep and uneven driveway posed a serious problem for his fleet of luxury vehicles. For high-performance cars like Lamborghinis, Ferraris and a Cadillac, a poorly-designed driveway could mean catastrophic damage—just one bumper repair on a Ferrari can cost upwards of $100,000.
Determined to protect his investment, Khan sought professional help to create a driveway that could accommodate his vehicles’ low ground clearance. After several failed attempts with other contractors, he connected with Heide Contracting. Pat Combs, COO of Heide Contracting, took on the challenge, completely redesigning the driveway to ensure a smooth and safe transition for Khan’s exotic fleet.
The original structure posed an engineering challenge, as city regulations required the driveway to sit two inches higher than the street. Combs and his team meticulously regraded the slope, lowering it to achieve the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics. Collaborating with Peter Wexel of Verified Outdoor Services, they used advanced mathematical calculations to execute a precise elevation plan. The result? A structurally sound, visually appealing, and luxury car-friendly driveway, complete with decorative stamped concrete that enhances the home’s curb appeal for any picture day with Khan’s auto collection.
With the driveway perfected, Khan’s passion for automobiles is now fully realized. Over the years, he has owned around 30 high-end cars, evolving from gas first basemodel 1999 Toyota Corolla to some of the most exclusive supercars in the world. His current collection includes:
• Cadillac CT Blackwing (2025)
• Lamborghini Performante Urus (2024)
• Ferrari SF90 Spider (2024)
• Lamborghini Huracan Spider (2021)
• Lamborghini SVJ Aventador (2019), his favorite in his current collection.
With an estimated total value of $2.6 million, Khan’s collection is more than just a symbol of wealth—it represents his journey, perseverance, and appreciation for fine craftsmanship. Beyond the thrill of owning these machines, Khan finds joy in sharing them with car enthusiasts, especially when he sees the excitement in the eyes of children who marvel at his cars.
Looking back, Khan credits his success to relentless determination and self-belief. His personal mantra is “Success isn’t given, it’s earned; Stay relentless, rare and keep moving forward.” These words have shaped Khan’s mindset and fueled his rise from financial struggles to affluence. Now, as a father to two sons, he hopes his legacy will inspire his sons and others to chase their dreams, regardless of their starting point. As for what’s next? While Khan is always on the lookout for his next exotic addition, one thing is certain: his home, his cars, his family and his story stand as a testament to the power of ambition, hard work, and the willingness to take risks.

Gransden, a professional jazz recording artist, trumpeter, singer, and big band leader based in Atlanta, GA, has a love story like no other. Growing up in Williamsville, NY, “everybody loved cars,” and Joe was no exception. In 1988, after two years of saving from odd jobs, 17-year-old Joe bought a 1979 Black Trans Am Y-84 Special Edition 4-speed. A car you might’ve seen in Rocky, or Clint Eastwood driving in “that one, or few, movies.”
As a 17-year-old musician in a band, there was hardly anywhere Joe didn’t go in that car. “Once I purchased that Trans Am, I felt
like I had everything I needed at that stage of my life. A wonderful family, my trumpet, which I loved and played every day, lots of friends, a cool social life, and a job. The Trans Am just seemed to round it all out for me.”
After years of joyriding, gigging, and working on the car with his dad, the ride came to an end. While touring with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, his parents moved to Atlanta. When Joe joined them and resumed college, he realized he couldn’t afford both school and gas. That’s when he made the heartbreaking decision to sell the car—something that had mattered to him as much as his music and loved ones.
In 2005, Joe was diagnosed with colon cancer. He didn’t know if he’d survive. “The battle was brutal and the thought of not beating it was brutal.” But, “the beautiful part was the wake-up call. I was racing through life at that point and the cancer brought everything to a halt.”
He promised himself that if he made it through, he would do two things: buy his dream trumpet—a Monette Prana 3 Bb brushed in 24-karat gold—and find his old Trans Am.
The search didn’t begin right away, but a seed had been planted.
Then in 2017, Joe and his son, Joey, stumbled on a TV show called Trans Am . On screen was a car that looked exactly like Joe’s. After Joe told his son about it, Joey said, “Dad, you have to find that car!”
With his son cheering him on and his wife Charissa by his side, Joe started hunting. She “did everything in her power to help me with this fight… I would not have made it through without her love and support.” While “the Trans Am is definitely not her ‘dream car,’” she always believed he’d get it back. “There was no doubt in her mind.”
But Joe had no VIN, no clue who he sold it to, and couldn’t find any insurance documents. What he did find was an old photo of the car and license plate. He contacted the DMV, but they no longer had records from that far back. After a year of dead ends, he gave up and bought a different Trans Am—a 1980 Bandit Tribute car. “It’s a blast and my son Joey and I are really enjoyed it,” but “in no way could it ever compare with my original Trans Am.”
Finally, in a last-ditch effort, Joe called Rick Deiters of Trans Am Specialties in Florida. Rick posted the old photo of Joe and the car on social media. Incredibly, the man Joe had sold the car to in 1993 saw the post and reached out. “I
remember your driveway. Your father was there. You were so upset about selling this car!” He no longer owned it but found an old insurance card with the VIN. They tracked it to a 2002 registration in Alabama—but the trail went cold again.
After a suggestion from his dad, Joe hired a private investigator. “He was also a huge fan of the Trans Am and Smokey and the Bandit. He was just as excited as I was, it seemed, to help me find this car.” Joe simply Googled “private investigator in Atlanta,” called the first number he saw—and hit gold. “He instantly said that he would help me… It did feel like we were on a mission from a movie. In fact, many times he mentioned that if we got the car back, we should turn the story into a movie. I’m currently working on plans to make that happen.” The car had been sitting under a tree in Alabama for 20 years.
Joe has played shows all over the country—including for Clint Eastwood, gigs with Kenny G, and a live TV broadcast at the White House—but none of those experiences even touched the level of excitement he felt when he saw his beloved Trans Am sitting in that Alabama yard.
“I was in tears. It had been at least 25 years since I laid eyes on her. The emotions were incredible. Car people will understand. The first words out of my mouth were, ‘Oh my God, there she is!’ I think I also said, ‘What’s up, honey? It’s been a minute. Let’s get you home!’”
As the dust settled and memories came rushing back, he thought of the rides he once took with his best friend. “Riding around in that car with my best friend Tony Scire, who has since passed away, were some of the best days of my life.”
After months of convincing and negotiation with the owner, Joe was finally able to buy her back in 2019 for $6,000. With Rick’s help, the car was fully restored—now fitted with an LS2 V-8 engine, a fresh paint job, and that same unmistakable presence. She’s home for good.
And yes, the music lives in all of it. “There is a part of my personality that goes all in 100% when I want something. My brain doesn’t let me quit until I get there.”
Joe even co-wrote a song inspired by the search, “Missing You.” It appears on his album Close to My Heart, produced by Kenny G. “The song was based on the search for my Trans Am as well as trying to reconnect with that fulfilled feeling I had as a child… having two solid parents that were always there for you.”
He hasn’t driven the car to a gig yet. But he will.

Roswell High School’s robotics team, better known as O.S.C.A.R. – Outstanding Students Creating Awesome Robots – is proud to be the oldest FIRST Robotics team in Georgia. Since 2002, O.S.C.A.R. has been a fully student-led organization where members design, build, program, and drive their own competition robots.
Each season, students have just six weeks to turn their ideas into a fully functioning robot capable of taking on complex challenges. This year, after competing in two Qualifying Competitions, O.S.C.A.R. advanced to the District Championship — one of the highest levels of competition in the state, just below the World Championship in Houston, Texas.
“We’re so proud of how far we’ve come this season,” says Sydney Keifer, President of O.S.C.A.R. Robotics. “Every decision, every design — it’s all led by students. It’s amazing to see what we can accomplish together.” Representing Roswell High at the District Championship was a major achievement for the team, showcasing not just technical skills but also leadership, teamwork, and innovation. O.S.C.A.R. Robotics is incredibly grateful for the support of the school, the community, and sponsors who continue to invest in the next generation of engineers, programmers, and leaders.

"WHERE’S THE KEY to the Safe?"
Life as Pam Baker knew it changed in an instant.
“My story began on October 8, 2018, when my husband, Jon, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer,” Pam shared. “Jon lived twice as long as doctors predicted and was released from his pain on November 12, 2021.”
During Jon’s battle, the Bakers had what many would consider a dream team—financial advisors, lawyers, and CPAs. Jon was a successful financial planner himself.
“We had a full team at our disposal, and still, things slipped through the cracks,” Pam said. “We were left wishing we had done more to prepare while he was alive. Navigating the ‘business’ of death was incredibly difficult— especially while grieving.”
That pain, and the chaos that followed, led to something unexpected: a book. Pam partnered with her nephew, financial expert Cameron Zabko to write Where’s the Key to the Safe?—a user-friendly, real-talk guide to planning for the inevitable.
“I wanted to make this process easier for others so they wouldn’t go through what I did,” Pam said. “The book felt like the most effective way to help people take action and proactively prepare their families.”
Written in a conversational tone, the book is meant to feel like a chat over coffee. It blends personal storytelling with professional advice.
“One of the biggest mistakes people make is waiting,” Pam said. “They assume they have time, but loss can come when you least expect it.”
“The best advice I can give is to stop delaying. Start now. All aspects of your financial life run more smoothly when your professionals work together,” added Cameron. “A good advisor will coordinate with your attorney and CPA to help keep your plan airtight.”
“We all experience loss,” Pam said, “but very few are prepared— emotionally, mentally, or financially. Death is inevitable, which is why we are passionate about normalizing the conversation and encouraging people to plan with a clear mind—before grief clouds their judgment.”

BY PLAYWORKS
Roswell resident Meredith Martini wanted to use her background and passions to harness the power of play for corporations, and in the summer of 2002, PlayWorks Group was born. This boutique event design and management company delivers extraordinary high-energy team building experiences to companies throughout the United States and Caribbean.
PlayWorks provides field days, beach "Olympics", scavenger hunts and other events such as the signature "AutoBond" activity (picture PVC pipes, wheels and a LOT of duct tape). Their many offerings encourage communication, creativity and sometimes a bit of competition to help corporate team members reconnect through play.
The corporate world experienced a still-growing trend in 2008 when organizations began demanding team-building activities that included social responsibility initiatives. The team at PlayWorks Group accepted the challenge by introducing a continuously growing selection of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) experiences. A recent healthcare client with 700 participants built and filled 140 Little Free Libraries through their CSR event. That’s a lot of teamwork (and a whole lot of books)!
PlayWorks Group now generates more than 70% of its business from CSR activities which brings Meredith immense satisfaction. These varied events create enduring community and workplace effects through their activities that include building bee hives, assembling bicycles, packing backpacks and even collecting food for North Fulton families.
One local favorite? The Corporate Eco Challenge serves as an annual outdoor event which PlayWorks Group developed as a fundraiser for the Chattahoochee Nature Center. The Corporate Eco Challenge combines outdoor adventure with Amazing Race elements as teams from Cox Enterprises to Alloy Personal Training compete across the grounds and even on the Chattahoochee River to support a worthy cause.
Bottom line? Team building doesn't need to be dull. PlayWorks Group provides meaningful and enjoyable team-building experiences that create lasting memories for their clients and impact on the community. Ready to play in 2025?

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit well known for its work in communities across Georgia and the nation. One couple helped propel the organization across the globe – Former President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter. Inspiring millions over the last three decades, President and Mrs. Carter worked alongside more than 104,000 volunteers strong across the U.S. and in 14 countries to build, renovate and repair more than 4,000 homes. In Cobb County, Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta (Habitat NWMA) spent the beginning of 2025 honoring the life and service of the former president. President Carter spoke often about the work of Habitat and his faith. He said, “Habitat gives us an opportunity which is very difficult to find: to reach out and work side by side with those who never have had a decent home-but work with them on a completely equal basis. It's not a big-shot, little-shot relationship. It's a sense of equality.” He also said, "I haven’t been on a Habitat project that I wasn’t thrilled
and inspired and wept.” The affiliate which covers Cobb, Douglas and Paulding counties built a President Carter Memorial Door and Frame project erected at the Habitat Smyrna ReStore and allowed the public to sign and leave personal messages of gratitude. “Raising a frame with a door symbolizes the many doors of opportunity that President Carter helped make possible through his life of service to others,” says Jessica Gill, CEO, Habitat NWMA. “He dedicated his long life to opening doors for others through affordable homeownership.” Habitat’s mission statement is “Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.” In Cobb County, Habitat NWMA annually partners with coalitions like the Cobb High School Coalition, Cobb Interfaith Coalition, Lutheran Coalition and Catholics4Habitat; municipal partners like the City of Marietta and City of Austell; specialty builds like Veterans Builds and the upcoming Women Build in May; as well as many dedicated corporate sponsors such as The Atlanta Braves Foundation, Home Depot, Genuine Parts, Publix, Assurant, Berkadia, and more.
In 2024, the affiliate had two “Legacy Builds”— the Terwilliger Family, who built for a Veteran; and the Kenney Family, who sponsored a full house to honor the family’s late wife and mother who loved Habitat. Her legacy lives on through giving a family a firm foundation for the future with a zero-interest mortgage in a safe environment. In 2024, local volunteers logged nearly 2,000 hours working alongside
homeowners to build their homes. Longtime volunteer crew leader Susan Chang loves sharing the journey to become a homeowner with families. “I love this organization and the way it helps the deserving families,” she says. “The work is all worth it when I see how happy and appreciative they are at their home dedications.” Recent homeowners in Cobb include teachers, a school bus driver, school cafeteria manager, City of Austell Police Department employee and City of Marietta employees. Partnerships like the City of Marietta Public Service program allow public servants to afford to live in the community they serve. “Living where you work is a key component in building community,” says Jessica Gill, CEO, Habitat NWMA. “Many of our teachers, city employees and first responders cannot afford the escalating prices of our local housing.” There are many ways to volunteer, donate, and sponsor a Habitat home.

FixIt Ace Hardware in downtown Roswell hosted its very first Ladies Night event, and it was a fantastic success! Cathy Jones from the Roswell Woman’s Group led a fun and informative hanging basket class, adding a creative touch to the night. During the two-hour event, 5% of all sales were donated to the Roswell Woman’s Group, which supports the community through events like BOO Y’ALL Scarecrows and the Spring Home and Garden Tour. We were thrilled to have the support of Roswell businesses including Deep Roots Wine Market, Blended Family Spirits, and Horticult Plants, along with vendors such as Stuckey’s Pecan Candies, Wicked Mix, Ivy Stone, Benjamin Moore, Ooni, and Traeger.
