Cheers to the end of summer!

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits and soaking in the last memories of summer. This issue is always one of my favorites because of the immense joy that children bring to families and the significant impact they make on their communities.

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow, they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our heart-work and greatest investment. We love to highlight some of the best for Roswell's kids in this issue. We share from the art and lessons dance can teach to the hearts of giving back at young ages.

Secondly, who could forget pets? This special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for everyone. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. Who could ignore the bond of furry friends, it is often deep and meaningful. Check out our local CityVet and how much of impact Dr. Raskin is making in our community and how one llama is hard at work spreading joy and I even got to share a kiss with Pie the llama!.

My childhood pet was a sweet beagle, Peanut. He accompanied our family on road trips, camping trips, boating and many, many sports fields! I had a chocolate lab, Scout, who was with us for 12 years to create memories of sharing experiences for my kids. I am proud to have a 9-year-old yellow lab grandpup, Kona, who I adore and our last family addition is a 125lb Rotweiler, Bulleit, who considers himself a lapdog. Pets are definitely a blessing to us all!

Please continue to support all our local businesses here in Roswell and I hope to see you around our great town! Cheers!

John Albers authors Senate Bill 58, which now is law

Georgia along with our Roswell Senator, John Albers, enacted a new law to improve the transportation of organs and medical teams for transplants. Senator Albers, who donated a kidney to his son in 2021, said the legislation is personally significant to him and his family. It designates emergency organ transport vehicles as essential services, similar to ambulances, allowing them to operate on public roads during transplant-related emergencies.

Festival of Art and Nature

"The Festival of the Painted Rock", has been brought back to Roswell, celebrating art and nature.

Did you ever wonder where the river that runs through Roswell got its name?

“Chattahoochee” comes from the Creek language, meaning “rocks marked or painted”. Roswell Arts Fund wanted to reintroduce “The Festival of the Painted Rock”, popular from the late 70s through early 90s at the Chattahoochee Nature Center, garnering overwhelming support from the community to bring back this festival honoring the arts and nature.

“The Festival”, celebrates the confluence of art, music and nature in the gorgeous surroundings of the CNC. With Roswell Arts Fund and Chattahoochee Nature Center both celebrating milestone anniversaries, the festival aims to shine a spotlight on creativity and conservation, inspiring the next generation to continue this legacy. Scott Hitch, Board Chair of Roswell Arts Fund relays, “This year’s festival is more than a celebration, it’s a bold statement about the power of creativity and conservation to shape our city’s future.”

Festival attendees will experience topnotch musicians on two stages with Grammy

Nominee, Maggie Rose headlining an impressive lineup of multi-genre musicians. Scott states, “In addition to live music, the festival features temporary art installations, interactive performances, and the unveiling of a new permanent sculpture by William Massey, curated by Roswell Arts Fund to commemorate the Chattahoochee Nature Center’s fiftieth anniversary.”

Attendees can enjoy 127 acres of nature as they wander trails for hidden art, seek wildlife and enjoy The Butterfly Encounter. Art by renowned artists such as Atlanta muralist Thomas Turner will be featured, as well as lesser-known artists. Take Keenan Sullivan for example. When his mother, Donna, grew frustrated because her son’s love of art could not adequately be expressed in his general art class because of physical limitations, she knew she had to find a place that would include people of all abilities.  She founded “Papillon Place,” where differences can be honored. “We connect artists with and without developmental differences, create salable art and build a

community through collaboration,” says Donna. Keenan and his colleagues are looking forward to showcasing their art and representing diverse ideas and mediums at the festival.

Festival goers can also enjoy a variety of culinary and beverages. Choosing from a pop-up beer garden by From the Earth Brewing Company, also brews from Variant Brewing accompanied by signature, elevated pub food. Tipsy Thaiger will also be serving its Thai-influenced street food.

Roswell’s art and music scene is making a resurgence thanks to Roswell Arts Fund and all that it's doing to bring community and artists together to share in the talents of creatives from all over. “The Festival of the Painted Rock” is poised to be a time-honored tradition, once again, bringing together people through the beauty that is created and that naturally surrounds us.

Join in the fun August 30, 12:30p.m. at the Chattahoochee Nature Center.

The Power of Dance

Atlanta Dance Central helps growing youth find their purpose and worth through power of dance.

She calls it, “the tingles”. It’s truly a superhuman experience shared between you, your fellow dancers and the audience,” says Charlotte Williamson, founder of Atlanta Dance Central in Roswell. She believes that every child should have the opportunity to experience this power of dance. By sharing moments like this onstage and spending hours in the classroom, dance creates a community where students find a safe space to shine.

From the time she was in college, Ms. Williamson has always had an unabashed ambition to give all children the chance to be graceful, feel themselves flying or learn to leap to the beat of the music. When she started her first dance company in 2003, she never imagined her mission to include ALL would eventually lead her to open Atlanta Dance Central. At Atlanta Dance Central, a child can be included whether they are neurodiverse, have physical disabilities, or have aspirations and talents of dancing on Broadway. “We believe that everyone is a dancer.  It's never too late to start,” relays Ms. Williamson.

Through her creation of the Physio Jazz Program, Ms. Williamson has been able to bring the art of dance to people of all abilities. “I launched my Physio Jazz Program, which was a curriculum that I designed myself over observation and trial and error.  The program focuses on building functional

movement, strength, and balance while also meeting their learning and social needs.  I created my own website Physiojazz.com with my observations and resources for people who want to build their own program,” she remarks. Additionally, Atlanta Dance Central also has a very robust performance company, Atlanta Rising Talent that not only focuses on all styles of dance, but also the history and artistry that each style conveys.

Atlanta Dance Central also prides itself on a student teaching program that builds proficiency and confidence. After completing the program, these students have an opportunity to then assist in classes and even lead two classes per year. Ms. Williamson states, “Our goal is for assistant teachers to feel comfortable leading their own classes when they graduate from high school.”

However, this goal is a conglomeration of the passion, dedication and support that is poured into these dancers from the time they are old enough to tip-toe. “Through this time period, we help dancers mature, discover their own passions (whether that's dance or not), learn to communicate, learn how to identify and express emotions, understand time management skills, and appreciate the benefit of being supported by a community.  Our policies have a built-in structure to allow dancers to make mistakes and recover from them as opposed to hard, solid, inflexible rules.  We help dancers set reasonable goals and give them the guidance and tools to meet them.  We provide two evaluations per year for all of our dancers to help communicate with parents about how they are doing in dance technique, friendships and behavior,” says Charlotte.

Ms. Williamson sees herself as an ally to parents in raising bright and confident adults and has had the privilege of helping to identify ways for children to overcome obstacles. She conveys, “We feel it's our responsibility to partner with parents to help their child grow into a successful

and happy adult.  Since starting the studio, I have seen thousands of students come through our doors and are able to guide parents when they have questions on what is happening in their child's life. Developmentally, we have spotted some crucial things in children that helped them get treatment they need.” Whether it’s a physical challenge that can be identified and supported or an emotional obstacle that a young person needs guidance with, Atlanta Dance Central and its instructors lovingly help escort students through it all. Community support and collaboration are also important to Atlanta Dance Central. “Atlanta Dance Central provides open dance days in August and January when anyone can try a class. We also champion a musical project called Sam's Room. The goal of Sam's Room is to bring people of

diverse backgrounds together, people with special needs and people without, to gain mutual understanding, respect, and creativity together.  We feel that our rooms are more powerful when we have more voices inside of them.  We've presented one workshop this past April and the next one will be in September.  We'd love to see everyone "Inside the Room," says Ms. Williamson.

Atlanta Dance Central is a dance company that takes all abilities and interests into account and meets the child where they are so that they may grow in their love and passion for dance and in life, passing it on to the next generation.

UNLOCKING HIDDEN POTENTIAL:

THE RISE OF CRAWL SPACE CONVERSIONS

MORE THAN A HOME IMPROVEMENT — IT’S A SMART INVESTMENT ESPECIALLY IN THE SOUTH WHERE THERE ARE LIMITED OPTIONS.

In the South the mention of a crawl space might once have made homeowners cringe. But with the right partner—and today’s advanced construction methods— these underused areas are being reimagined into fully livable lower levels, often adding between 1,200 and 2,200+ square feet of usable space; that’s the size of a small Atlanta home or condo. And when it comes to mastering the crawl space conversion game, no one does it better than Heide Contracting.

THE RISE OF CRAWL SPACE CONVERSIONS

With housing costs, high interest rates, historic preservation concerns, and strict city regulations, homeowners in the South are facing fewer options for expanding their living space. While building up or out has traditionally been the go-to solution, a growing number of savvy homeowners are looking down—and reaping major benefits.

Crawl space conversions are changing the game. On average, converting a crawl space costs just one-third as much as a traditional home addition, yet can yield up to three times more usable space. Construction is less invasive, families can stay in their homes during the process, and perhaps best of all—the exterior of the home remains completely untouched.

Here’s why more Southern homeowners are digging deep:

1. Lower construction costs mean better ROI.

2. Minimal disruption—you stay home while the work happens beneath it.

3. Instant equity—the value of your home increases the moment the basement is complete. That square footage is officially yours.

At the forefront of the crawl space conversion movement is Heide Contracting— pioneers in transforming underutilized space into high-value, livable square footage.

Founder Alex Heide brings a distinctly innovative, European-inspired approach to Southern architecture, preserving a home’s character while maximizing its long-term value. As a first-generation Danish-American, Alex grew up with a different mindset: in

Europe, when families need more space, they dig down—not out or up. “It’s not unusual in Europe to find homes with six or seven levels beneath ground,” says Kendra Heide, Chief Marketing Officer at Heide Contracting. “When Alex moved to Atlanta, he was struck by how many families were outgrowing their beautiful historic homes and how often the solution was demolition. He saw an opportunity to preserve the architecture while solving the space problem in a way that no one here had ever considered.”

Let’s be clear: Crawl space conversions aren't small projects—they're major structural transformations that demand expert engineering, architectural foresight, and specialized labor.

“What sets us apart is our ability to make the ‘impossible’ possible,” says Kendra. “Many of our clients come to us after hearing ‘no’ from other contractors. That’s where we thrive, bringing ambitious visions to life with smart design and technical mastery.”

Heide Contracting guides homeowners through every step—from the architectural vision to the excavation and finishing work. “This is heavy-duty construction,”

CONTINUED >

Kendra adds. “But it’s guided by thoughtful design and deep respect for the homes and families we’re working with. We help homeowners understand not just what’s possible—but what’s best for their home and future.”

Just ask Brian and Megan Hartman, Buckhead homeowners who needed more space for their growing family. Heide Contracting delivered a solution that preserved their home’s charm while dramatically expanding its function. By transforming and lowering their existing basement, the Heide team added three bedrooms, two full bathrooms, a home office, a spacious laundry room, and a family room—doubling the home’s square footage without altering its exterior or requiring the family to relocate during construction.

“Alex was the first person who had the idea to expand our house in a way no one else had suggested,” says Brian. “It was also more affordable than any other option we explored—and from start to finish, it was a great experience.”

MORE THAN A HOME IMPROVEMENT — IT’S A SMART INVESTMENT

Crawl space conversions are not just luxury upgrades—they’re some of the smartest investments a homeowner can make. Adding functional, livable square footage below grade significantly boosts your home’s value, enhances everyday functionality, and increases future flexibility. Whether you’re expanding for a growing family, creating space for aging parents, or building a rental suite, the financial benefits are clear and compelling. Consider a project where Heide Contracting added 1,135 square feet to a 3,165-squarefoot Atlanta home—all underground and with zero changes to the exterior. The result? The home’s value jumped by over $500k within months, yielding a net equity gain of over $300K and an immediate return on investment of 124%.

For many of Heide’s clients—especially those with backgrounds in finance or real estate these numbers make the decision clear: crawl space conversions offer one of the highest returns on investment you can achieve on a primary residence.

So yes, that once-daunting crawl space could be your home’s most valuable asset. With experts like Heide Contracting in the South at the helm, homeowners can dream bigger, dig deeper, and expand their living space without sacrificing style, safety, or the character of their home.

This isn’t just a passing trend; it’s a smart, forward-thinking way to enhance your home’s value and enjoy it for years to come.

Let's Meet Nick Porche

He's the kind of neighbor who remembers your dog's name and asks how your week is going.

In Roswell, you might spot Nick Porche chatting with a neighbor at Deep Roots Wine Market, ordering his favorite meal at 1920 on Canton Street, or attending school events with his family. He’s the kind of neighbor who remembers your dog’s name and asks how your week is going—not because he has to, but because he genuinely wants to know.

Nick is the Chief Financial Officer of a multinational company, where he manages large budgets, oversees financial planning, and implements systems that keep teams aligned and accountable. That same steady, practical approach carries over into his everyday life in Roswell, where he’s known for following through and staying organized behind the scenes. He co-owns Stems on the Move, a local flower shop that’s quietly become part of the fabric of Roswell life—gifts for everything from birthdays and baby showers to backyard weddings and graduation bouquets.

He’s a familiar face in Roswell’s public schools, where his two sons are enrolled and where he’s been an active part of the PTO for years. When a new digital sign for the school—like others around the city—seemed out of reach, he coordinated with the City of Roswell, Fulton County, and Georgia Power to make it happen. He also led PTO fundraising efforts for a crossing guard, resigning after three weeks, citing threats to his safety from speeding drivers, underscoring the ongoing challenges around school zone safety. Whether he’s tackling logistics or helping others connect the dots, Nick brings a thoughtful, hands-on approach to every role he takes on.

Nick regularly hosts neighborhood gatherings and community events, and he rarely misses a local festival. His favorite is the Roswell Arts Festival, which he attends every year with his family.  Nick and his family have a 17-year-old Brussels Griffon named Cooper. He once won a national grocery bagging competition— and yes, he can quote Steel Magnolias on demand.

This November, Nick will be on the ballot for Roswell City Council. His candidacy reflects the steady involvement, collaborative spirit, and practical leadership style that neighbors have come to know—whether on a front porch, school fundraiser, or along the Greenway. He’s focused on making city finances more transparent, improving infrastructure and public safety in ways that meet residents’ everyday needs, and preserving the green spaces that make Roswell feel like home.

Record Breaking Attendance and Support for Bulloch Hall

ARTICLE BY SANDY BUHLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALBRIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY
THE MAGNOLIA BALL IS AN ELEGANT AND HIGHLY SOUGHT-AFTER ROSWELL SOCIAL EVENT

The Magnolia Ball celebrated 40 years at the Dunwoody Country Club. Guests were spoiled with top line beverages, surf & turf, and keepsake pewter magnolia charm attached to Nothing Bundt Cakes from Gloria Mattei. Fly Betty Band kept the dance floor full to the last song.

The theme, Be a Part of History, celebrated the 120th anniversary of President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1905 visit to Bulloch Hall, childhood home of Mittie Bulloch where she married Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. Their son, Theodore visited Roswell during a reconciliation tour.

40 years of Magnolia Ball photographs were displayed throughout the venue.  Gold sponsors and above will make history as their names will be inscribed on a permanent plaque prominently displayed at Bulloch Hall. Sponsors from bronze and higher will be on posters, in the eNewsletter, and on the website as members of the prestigious Bulloch Hall Society 1839.

Bob Hagan, President of Friends of Bulloch, Inc., captured the evening saying, “I could not be more pleased. What a tremendous

success! From a sell-out crowd of 288 to record-breaking fundraising of $100,000 (to illuminate Bulloch Hall with exterior lighting and restore damaged areas). Many thanks to our dedicated sponsors, volunteers, co-chairs and the Magnolia Ball Committee for a wonderful experience.”

“Bulloch Hall is Roswell’s only nationally recognized historic site and it’s on the National Register of Historic Places, known for its meticulous restoration and stunning Greek Revival architecture," said event Co-Chair Jonathan Crooks. "As the childhood home of Theodore Roosevelt’s mother and grandmother of Eleanor Roosevelt, it’s one of the few homes tied to two U.S. Presidents.”

Highlights of the Ball included Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson, City Council members Lee Hills and David Johnson as talented live auction "auctioneer".  Bob thanked presenting sponsor Malon D. Mimms; Diamond sponsors: Drs. Betty & Tom Price, Patsy & Bill Wolff; Platinum sponsors: Robert W. Hagan Family Foundation, Jonathan Powell Crooks, John Michael Brunetti, Stacey & Mayor

Kurt Wilson; and Gold sponsors: Carol Abreu, Nancy & Richard Alterman, Tod Baker, Carolyn & Bob Bauman, Pam Billingsley, Sandy Buhler, Cheryl & Jim Coyle, Rae & Will Colley, Sid Disher, Jodi & David Grace, Claire & Dave Hallman, Lee Hollingsworth, Felicitas & Bill Johnson, Judy & Rick Meer, Drs. Anu & Aman Mongia, George Polatty, Susan & Bob Rumble, Karen & Charlie Schwank, Colleen & Jim Taylor, Blake Turner, Sunny K. Park, Synovus Bank, Marge & Bob West, and Margie Watson.  Guests commented that this Magnolia Ball was the “best ever”!

The Magnolia Ball was more than a party. It was a reminder of what we’re here to protect, added Co-Chair Karen Schwank. “I hope people heard the important words in the letter from Mrs. Robert Templeton, the first Magnolia Ball chair. It's our ‘duty to safeguard, preserve, and carry forth into the next generation this heritage that was left to us in trust.’

SUNSHINE ON A RANNEY DAY:

BUILDING ACCESSIBILITY, CREATING JOY

BLENDING THE POWER OF COMPASSION, CREATIVITY, AND COMMUNITY IN CHILDREN'S LIVES

Sunshine on a Ranney Day (SOARD) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Roswell, Georgia, that transforms the lives of children with special needs and long-term illnesses through thoughtfully designed home renovations, at no cost to the family. Each project focuses on creating wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, dream bedrooms, and in-home therapy spaces that offer functionality and inspiration.

This fall, Sunshine on a Ranney Day will begin a special renovation for eleven-year-old Woodstock resident Leland, a vibrant young boy with spina bifida. Despite his complex medical journey, Leland's joyful spirit and love for sports, especially golf, shine through. This past May, Leland joined SOARD at our annual golf tournament, Sunshine on a Ranney Fairway, where he quickly became a favorite. Many players invited him to tee off on their behalf, and he happily rose to the occasion, bringing both heart and skill to the game. Leland's mom describes him as "in the middle," not quite able to join typical sports teams but always eager to participate.

Leland approaches life with unwavering determination, remarkable resilience, and a strong desire to do things independently.

As Sunshine on a Ranney Day prepares to create a fully accessible bathroom for Leland that will meet his complex medical needs and reflect his bright spirit, his family is deeply grateful. His mother, Nicole, shares that this renovation is not only practical but profoundly meaningful, saying it is "truly life-changing for our family." Nicole continues, "Knowing our son will have a space that supports his independence and honors his dignity brings so much hope for the future. We're overwhelmed with gratitude for the kindness of our community and God's provision in this season of our lives."

Every Sunshine on a Ranney Day renovation is more than just a construction project. It is a powerful blend of compassion, creativity, and community. For the families SOARD serves, these transformations offer freedom, dignity, and the opportunity for their

Hudson and his family

children to thrive in spaces designed specifically for their needs. When eight-year-old Emery received a custom therapy room, her father reflected on what it meant for their family, noting that the space would give her a new level of independence; "She is going to love the level of independence that's going to come from this.”

The same sentiment was echoed by the parents of Hudson, a young boy living with Gaucher Disease Type 2, who received a bathroom makeover that relocated the bathroom to the first floor of their home. With the new setup, Hudson's room, bathroom, and therapy play area are all on the same level, an intentional design that eliminates the strain of navigating stairs multiple times a day. "Instead of having to climb two flights of stairs to get him to a bathroom just for his regular needs and showering." they can now do it on one floor, his mother explained, "I was just really relieved about how much easier this is going to make it for us and Hudson."

For families like Hudson's, Emery's, and Leland's, these renovations don't just improve a home; they also enhance the quality of life, helping children live more independently, with comfort and joy built into every detail. Sunshine on a Ranney Day's mission is a testament to what is possible when compassion meets design, creating spaces that not only meet medical needs but also nurture confidence, joy, and a sense of belonging.

Dr. Andrew Raskin’s goal was always to convey this sentiment, not only to his clients and their human parents, but to the staff he lovingly calls family.

“The number one reason I entered business ownership was to create a joyful place for people to work. An appreciated and gratified staff won’t hesitate to meet you at the door! They will excitedly love on your pets! They deeply care about their work,” says Dr. Raskin.

This attitude can be felt throughout the practice. From the large mural at the front that lets you know “We’re Rooted in Kindness”, to the exam rooms where comfort and understanding for dogs and cats abound, your pet’s best interest is in mind.

For Dr. Raskin, the love for animals started at a young age. “I was always drawn to our family dogs and cats and I loved volunteering with local rescues. It felt only natural to that my first job in high school was at our pets' veterinary office. From there, I fell in love with the medical puzzle each patient presents. It's a great profession for someone who likes to problem solve, as our patients cannot tell us what is bothering them,” Dr. Raskin relays.

His thirst for knowledge and the quest for procuring the best experience for his patients brought him to CityVet. Dr. Raskin shares, “CityVet attracted me as a business owner because they provide partner veterinarians with complete autonomy to run the practice the way we want. This ranges from organizing and decorating the space, to hiring, to practicing the individualized and high quality medicine we want for our patients."

This structure allows Dr. Raskin and his staff to focus on what really matters - your pet’s health, comfort,

and happiness. Walk-ins and sick visits are available seven days a week. In the event that your best furry friend needs to be hospitalized, they offer IV therapies, and even perform emergency surgeries onsite. Individualized wellness and preventative care is also provided seven days a week from initial vaccines as a puppy or kitten to older age and geriatric care. More recently, they proudly announced the addition of a very talented groomer, Rachel.  Rachel’s poodle, Miriam, has become an attraction in her own right for CityVet Roswell. As the dog-daughter of a talented groomer, she can be seen sporting a plethora of different hair cuts, dyes, and patterns. “She is always excited to show off her new look for the clients and their pets and her gentle attitude makes her a perfect clinic dog.” Dr. Raskin says.

Everyone at CityVet Roswell is excited to join the community and has already gotten involved in several ways. Dr. Raskin and his staff joined River Eves Elementary School in April for a Career Day. The practice is also deeply involved with rescue work, partnering with Furkids Animal Rescue, Angels Among Us, and Ozzie Albies Foundation.

“We have a very tight knit group here at CityVet Roswell. Many of us come from a shelter medicine background. This type of background instilled a lot of compassion in us. It also taught us to always do everything we can for every patient that walks in the door. We try to accommodate every patient and their family's needs, and we will always build a plan specifically for them", says Dr. Raskin. Where care and commitment are evident, excellence follows; it’s the CityVet way. Come find out for yourself and stop in for a tour or make an appointment at https://www.cityvet.com/location/roswell

How One Woman’s Herd is Healing Hearts

ARTICLE BY TRAN BUI
Tracy Munroe, owner of Wit's End Llama Consortium Photo: Zebra Gallerie

When Tracy Munroe of Dallas, Georgia says her business has a mind of its own, she’s not kidding. What started nearly 30 years ago with a personal fascination for llamas has blossomed into Wit’s End Llama Consortium, a mobile experience that’s bringing joy, comfort, and sometimes even tears (the good kind) to people of all ages and backgrounds.

“I was immediately taken under the wing of some of the most influential people in the llama industry,” Tracy shared. “I learned that these amazing, quirky animals could not only change my life, but also bring joy to others in a variety of ways.”

With a herd that’s been trained with love, patience, and a little bit of llama logic, Tracy offers everything from weddings and birthday parties to eldercare visits, mental health support, and even team-building events. “The list is frankly unending,” she said. “Every experience is unique. The only thing that limits our services is creativity.”

At Presbyterian Village in Smyrna, Resident Services Director Kay Chupp wanted to throw a memorable Cinco de Mayo party. That’s how Pie the llama and Cricket the alpaca stole the show and lots of hearts. “We ended up with over 100 residents who attended,” Kay recalled. “Everyone was amazed at the connection with the animals and the unconditional love that comes from them. One resident in the nursing home could no longer express herself well after a stroke, but to see her light up was amazing.”

From their soulful eyes to their silly side-eyes, these animals aren’t just adorable. They have a way of lifting spirits. “It seems no matter what we are involved in, the answer is a therapeutic experience,” Tracy shared. “People feel a simple lightness of being and not having anything else to worry about but to have FUN and JOY.”

Whether it’s a party, a quiet visit, or a walk through the neighborhood, the llamas of Wit’s End bring connection, comfort, and a little bit of magic. No drama, just llama.

EMPOWERING YOUTH

REVVED UP KIDS LEADS THE CHARGE AGAINST CHILD EXPLOITATION

In the heart of North Fulton, a transformative initiative is taking root, aiming to shield children and teens from the perils of sexual abuse, exploitation, and trafficking. Revved Up Kids, a nonprofit organization founded in 2014 by Alli Neal and her husband David, stands as a beacon of hope and education in the community.

The inception of Revved Up Kids was, as Alli describes, "nothing less than a clear call from God during a point of transition in our life." With no prior knowledge of the issue, Neal embarked

on a journey of self-education and dedication, leading to the development of comprehensive sexual abuse prevention training programs for children when none existed in Atlanta. “From my comfortable, safe suburban home in North Fulton, I was astounded to learn about the prevalence of child sexual abuse, and to learn that it was happening to children in my own back yard,” said Neal, “God called me to this purpose, and once my eyes were opened I couldn’t turn away. One thing we should all be able to agree upon is that even one child is one too many.”

Revved Up Kids distinguishes itself as the only Atlanta-based nonprofit solely focused on the prevention of child sexual abuse. Revved Up Kids offers an array of program formats that equip children and teens to recognize and respond to unsafe people, dangerous situations, and equip adults to be better protectors. Their evidence-based and evidence-informed training programs are highly acclaimed by educators, physicians, mental health experts, public safety officials, and parents.

A significant aspect of Revved Up Kids' approach is its commitment to accessibility. Recognizing that financial constraints should not hinder a child's right to safety education, the organization operates on a model where, for every group that pays for training, another receives it free of charge. In Roswell, training partnerships with the YMCA, STAR House Foundation, the Drake House and the Roswell Police have ensured that children in some of the highest need neighborhoods have been able to receive this vital training at no charge.

The impact of Revved Up Kids is tangible. Children and teens have avoided and escaped attacks as a result of their training, and some have disclosed sexual abuse, leading to timely interventions. Neal emphasizes the importance of these outcomes, stating, "Children are being saved from their abusers as a result of our training... when we remove fear, they are emboldened to disclose."

“God called me to this purpose, and once my eyes were opened I couldn’t turn away.”

Revved Up Kids offers an opportunity to be part of a movement that prioritizes the safety and well-being of the community's youth. Whether through hosting training programs, volunteering, or donating, your involvement is crucial. PUTTING COMPASSION INTO ACTION AT CMS

It all started with a prayer and a promise. Just before Thanksgiving in 2015, Crabapple Middle School’s social counselor Tamla Hodges shared with CMS admin Linda Porter that the federal Shop-Witha-Cop program had cut middle schoolers due to lack of funding. Nearly 30 CMS families were depending on it for holiday gifts. After hugging and praying, they vowed to ask the next person who walked in for help. That person was parent Becky Nelson.

Becky rallied support and that December, 32 families received $100 in wrapped gifts, plus food, gift cards, and a warm holiday memory. By January, Huskies Helping Huskies (HHH) was a 501(c)(3).

“Our mission is to help any family or staff associated with CMS with the goal to directly aid the attendance and attention of the students,” Becky said.

HHH quickly grew into a wide-reaching support network. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the group shifted focus—delivering gift cards and tech tools, and providing job placement support, transportation, legal needs, and citizenship. “Putting compassion into action means activity to cure the need.”

Participants aren’t identified, and giving becomes a school-wide effort. Sometimes the gift is in being able to give.

Former CMS parent Deanna Williams: “HHH impacted my life in such phenomenal ways being a SURVIVOR! It helped me get through a very difficult time. Most of all supporting me through a whole year of unexpected traumas.”

Former student Dayanara Gonzalez Castro shared, “They helped my family when we were at our lowest— providing me braces and medical insurance for my mother. There wasn’t a holiday we didn’t feel loved. HHH is built on love and humanity.”

Unlocking Potential: Powerhouse Therapy Transforms Lives

CIMT: A Play-Based, Evidence-Backed Approach Helping Children Build Strength, Confidence, and Independence

Charlene Kurkjian founded Powerhouse Therapy in 2010 with a bold vision: help children with one-sided weakness from stroke or neurological conditions make lasting progress beyond what weekly therapy could offer. While working as an occupational therapist at CHOA, Charlene met a parent who had traveled out of state for an intensive therapy program and saw remarkable improvements in her child with cerebral palsy. Inspired, Charlene and a PT colleague launched their first 3-week intensive that summer — and were amazed by the life-changing results for both the children and their families. Since then, Powerhouse Therapy has grown, offering intensive programs every June and July.

“The intensive model lets us shape new movement patterns through play, repetition, and focus — unlocking potential that might otherwise stay hidden,” says Charlene.

Powerhouse’s Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) program helps children rewire their brains through fun, motivating activities. During 2-4 week sessions (3 hours), a child’s stronger arm is gently constrained so they use the weaker one. One-on-one with a trained CIMT therapist, kids build strength, coordination, and confidence as their brain forms new connections. Movements like grasping, pinching, and isolating fingers — which once seemed impossible — start to emerge.

The program doesn’t just improve movement; it also boosts independence. As skills improve, so does a child’s ability to dress, bathe, eat, open containers, and safely navigate playgrounds. Gains in therapy lead to real-world changes at home and school — increasing confidence, motivation, and joy.

An important part of the program is the "Transfer Package" — daily guidance for parents to help children practice new skills at home, continuing using their weaker arm in everyday activities, their progress sticks and grows.

After the 3rd week, children can join an optional 4th-week bilateral intensive, learning to use both hands together for reallife tasks like dressing, cutting, and carrying. Once the cast is removed, aqua therapy is offered to improve strength and coordination in a fun, supportive environment.

In 2019, Powerhouse Therapy added a Physical Therapy intensive for the lower body. This program focuses on correcting misuse patterns, improving balance, core strength, and safe movement — following the same proven, immersive model as the CIMT program.

Charlene says it best:

"I do this work because I see children not just move — but thrive. That’s why Powerhouse Therapy exists".

At the heart of Powerhouse Therapy is a passion to bring hope:

• Hope to parents who have carried stress and heartbreak of watching their child struggle.

• Hope to children who begin to see their own strength.

MEET LEVI AND HIS FAMILY:

After suffering an intensive stroke at 18 months in 2018, Levi started CMIT, it was initially expected he would have no functional use of his hand and arm. However, the intensive CIMT (Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy) sessions have played a vital role in helping his brain form new neural connections, allowing his doctors to plan multiple tendon transfers in his hand to further improve functionality.

As part of his recovery following surgery, Levi will continue CIMT at Powerhouse once he has fully healed. Eager to see continued improvements, his orthopedic surgeons and neurologist attribute much of his progress to therapy and especially the CIMT. Levi has completed six CIMT sessions, and with each one, he’s gained more strength, awareness, and independence. He now uses his right hand to turn lights and faucets on and off, give high

fives, open doors, press buttons, point, carry light objects, and assist with tasks like opening snack bags, toothpaste, juice boxes, and his backpack. These everyday skills have given him more confidence and allowed him to be more independent at home and school—making life feel more normal.

CIMT Camp is truly a family commitment, doing therapy homework, keeping the cast on (even when it’s hard), and staying consistent long after camp ends. "The Powerhouse team, especially Charlene, go above and beyond. She didn’t just guide Levi—she taught us how to support him, turning therapy into part of our everyday life. Her encouragement, knowledge, and kindness made all the difference".

"We remain committed to working with Powerhouse Therapy. Charlene, Disha, and all the therapists involved in Levi’s care are exceptional, skilled, knowledgeable, and deeply caring. All the hard work is worth it when you witness the joy and pride on your child’s face as they open a snack bag on their own for the very first time", states Brandi Holmes, Levi's mother.

A HEART for Service

LOCAL ROSWELL STUDENT-LED CLUBS ORGANIZE SERVICE PROJECTS BIG AND SMALL SPONSORED THROUGH INTERACT CLUB

We often hear the phrase “a heart for service,” but how does a community truly build a culture around it?

For 75 years, the Roswell Rotary Club—a part of Rotary International—has done just that. One of their strongest initiatives is sponsoring Interact Clubs in nearly every public and private school in Roswell, nurturing youth leadership and volunteerism from 4th to 12th grade.

These student-led clubs organize service projects big and small. For example some of these projects include:

• Sweet Apple Elementary made 35 no-sew blankets for neonatal babies.

• Elkins Pointe Middle School installed two international peace poles.

• The Cottage School hosted its first Red Cross blood drive.

• Centennial High School ran a hospitality suite at a track & field meet.

There are no GPA requirements or minimum service hours to join. Still, the impact is impressive: elementary clubs average 6

Sweet Apple Elementary blankets

projects a year, middle schools 12, and high schools over 20. Together, they bring real change to people, animals, and the planet.

Collin Pierce, a Roswell High School senior and Interact President, joined in middle school. His advice: “Help where you can. As long as you’re willing, the world becomes better.” A favorite memory? Jumping off a 15-foot diving board into 40-degree water for the Polar Bear Plunge Challenge—raising money while having fun.

Crabapple Middle has had an Interact Club for over 15 years, led by Rotarian Michael Curling since 2018. “No other program offers middle school students such a powerful platform for service and growth,” he says.

Each club ideally has two adult liaisons (they don’t have to be Rotarians but must be certified volunteers). To get involved, ask your school or contact Rotarian Becky Nelson at bnelson@CCHL.com.

At Roswell North, teacher and Interact liaison Nikki Maples loves seeing young leaders in action. During “Shoetober,” students aimed to collect 5 boxes of gently used sneakers but gathered 12. They learned those shoes help keep kids healthy and able to stay in school, directly improving lives of all people.

Globally, there are almost 15,000 Interact Clubs in 145 countries, connecting over 340,000 young leaders. As Rotary International says: Take action, build international understanding, and make new friends around the world.

Regan Pierce, a Roswell High teacher and Interact sponsor for 10 years, sums it up: “Many students want to volunteer but don’t know how to start. Interact gives them opportunities to help, learn, and become leaders who inspire others.”

Thanks to these efforts, the next generation is ready to step up—through conviction, action, and collaboration. Join us, and watch them go.

PROBLEM

A person can be eating the right foods and exercising regularly, but if they are hormonally unbalanced, most likely they will not achieve their desired results.

How we feel is affected by hormonal imbalances, issues with our gut & digestion, liver function problems, our cortisol levels and insulin resistance, all effect how we feel and function. These are culprits of old age.

THE SOLUTION

The solution is to be hormonally balanced taking out of the equation “for your age”.

We want you to have hormonal levels of a healthy young adult. If we get you feeling younger, you will start moving younger. When you start moving younger you will start looking younger. That coupled with guidance on nutrition and exercise will lead to a longer happier healthier life.

Busload of Book Love

In a world where screens are everywhere and attention spans are shrinking, Stephanie Carlisle and Morganne Turberville of Acworth are making a case for slowing down—with a good book in hand. The duo, both full-time professionals, moms, wives, and book lovers, are the co-owners of a mobile bookstore called TBR BookBus.

“Reading gives us a much-needed escape from reality,” said Stephanie. “It’s our way to recharge, dream, and reconnect with ourselves. Books have made us laugh, cry, inspired us creatively, and shifted our perspectives. They’ve opened doors to new ideas, new worlds, and new ways of thinking.”

BEST FRIENDS BRING THEIR BOOKSTORE DREAM TO LIFE ON WHEELS

Stephanie Carlisle & Morganne Turberville, the duo behind TBR BookBus
“BOOKS OFFER SOMETHING RADICALLY DIFFERENT: FOCUS. THEY INSPIRE CREATIVITY, CHALLENGE YOUR THINKING, BUILD EMPATHY & OFTEN SHIFT YOUR PERSPECTIVE IN WAYS SOCIAL MEDIA NEVER COULD.”

That love for reading—and the transformation it brought to their own lives—sparked an idea. Instead of just trading book recommendations with each other, why not bring the joy to everyone?

Enter Shortie, their purple, pint-sized bus turned libraryon-wheels, complete with stained wood shelves, mood lighting, and a lineup of reads that range from fantasy to feminist memoirs.

“We get to turn heads everywhere we go, with a purple bus that has books in the windows and people stopping to ask, ‘Wait… what is that?!’ And we wouldn’t have it any other way,” shared Morganne.

Since their March 2025 launch, they’ve been rolling from Roswell to Canton, popping up at coffee shops, breweries, wineries, clothing boutiques, festivals, open-air markets— anywhere there’s a community ready to “yap about books.”

Sure, there were doubts. “What if we fail? What if people don’t like it?” But in true heroine fashion, they pushed past the fear. “We’d rather try and fail than spend our lives wondering what if,” admitted Morganne. That mindset, they say, changed everything—and it’s exactly what they hope others take away from their story.

Books, they believe, are more relevant than ever. In an age of mental whiplash from constant scrolling, “Books offer something radically different: focus,” explained Stephanie. It’s why they read with their kids daily—and why they built a space where others can do the same.

Whether you're a lifelong reader or just rediscovering the magic, this bus isn’t just a bookstore—it’s a movement. And yes, you’ll probably say, “I want to live in here,” the moment you step inside. Stephanie and Morganne sure did.
