As we celebrate the Ladies Issue of City Lifestyle, I am filled with immense pride as we shine a spotlight on the incredible women who continue to break barriers, inspire, and build thriving businesses in our community. This issue is a tribute to the many women who balance multiple roles with grace and determination—wives, mothers, daughters, and business professionals, all working tirelessly to create a legacy of success and empowerment.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to forget the sheer strength it takes to juggle the demands of family, work, and self-care. Whether you’re raising children, supporting your partner, or leading a team, the art of balancing these responsibilities is no small feat. But it is a testament to the resilience, creativity, and passion that women bring to everything they do.
Supporting women-owned businesses isn’t just a trend—it’s a powerful movement. It’s about creating opportunities for growth, fostering innovation, and championing the values of equality, integrity, and community. As consumers, we can make a real difference by shopping with intention and encouraging the women around us who are paving the way in their respective industries. Their success not only benefits their families, employees, and clients but contributes to the empowerment of future generations of women.
As someone who balances multiple roles—wife, mother, and business professional—I understand the challenges that come with it. The moments of doubt, the endless to-do lists, and the sacrifices made behind the scenes. But through it all, the fulfillment that comes from creating something meaningful, leading with purpose, and setting an example for the next generation is immeasurable.
This issue is a reminder of the importance of self-care, the power of community, and the impact we can have when we lift one another up. We are all navigating our own journeys, and as women, it’s essential to support and celebrate one another—whether in business or in life.
To every woman who is working hard to build her dreams, take care of her loved ones, and find her own sense of balance, know that you are seen, you are valued, and your contribution matters.
Thank you for joining us in celebrating the remarkable women who make our world a better place.
With gratitude,
May 2025

“What happens to the mamas who don’t have a tribe of people to help them? Who shows them like our families showed us?” These are the questions that led Selah Creek co-founders Ashley and Kevin Potts to create a place of healing and empowerment for young mothers facing unplanned or unsupported pregnancies. In 2015, Selah Creek Maternity Home was founded in Rockwall County, offering a home where women can grow and build a foundation for a successful future.
Selah Creek is more than just a bed and a crib. It’s a comprehensive support system, nestled on a 10-acre property and designed to nurture every aspect of a woman’s well-being. With faith-based resources, mentoring, and loving care provided by professionally trained staff, Selah Creek offers a haven where women can find a renewed sense of hope.
“We are not your typical shelter. We walk alongside these women as they work hard to break generational chains.”
Gospel, creating long-lasting change.” Selah Creek supports women through the routine parts of life, such as rides to the grocery store and doctor appointments, as well as the special moments, like the birth of their baby or the holidays. “We are not your typical shelter,” reminds Jennifer. “We walk alongside these women as they work hard to break generational chains. That entails a lot of devotion, faith, perseverance, commitment, and time.”
— Jennifer Key
This holistic approach includes fostering spiritual and emotional growth through Bible studies, prayer groups, and individual counseling. Residents develop essential life skills through workshops on cooking, budgeting, parenting, etc., as well as educational support and job assistance services, financial literacy training, and opportunities to save for independent living.
As Executive Director Jennifer Key explains, “Our vision is to see women transformed by the
Selah Creek provides a nurturing home for women throughout their pregnancy, labor and delivery, and up to a year after their baby is born. Many of the women who arrive at Selah Creek have faced significant challenges and trauma. Without family support and often nowhere else to go, they come seeking a new beginning. Selah Creek offers them a
chance to not only rewrite their own stories but also create a brighter future for their children.
“Celebrating every milestone, big or small, encourages the mothers on their journey,” Jennifer shares. “In about the second or third month with us, we often see a shift where they are thinking through the decision-making process in a less reactive way, and in a more thoughtful, reflective manner.”
Each mother at Selah Creek begins a program tailored to meet her unique needs and goals. This includes
meeting with staff to discuss weekly priorities, participating in daily Bible studies, and reading books related to spiritual and emotional growth. Each mother also advances her education, either by obtaining a GED or pursuing a college degree or trade. With the help of staff, they also learn how to cook, clean, and maintain a home. Some moms have chosen to advance their lives through dental assistant school, cosmetology school, and pursuing a GED degree. Others have decided to immediately enter the workforce.
The Selah Creek journey doesn’t end with graduation. Selah Creek strives to continue to be a solid and continuous support system for all alumni, moms, and babies. Alumni support includes mentoring, spiritual guidance, tangible assistance such as clothing or diaper/ wipe assistance, transportation, employment guidance, and more. “One Selah Creek alumna proudly shared at the Selah Creek Christmas party that she completed her associate’s degree, a dream that was planted and watered during her time at Selah Creek. Another alumna just completed her real estate licensing exam, which was sponsored by a Selah Creek volunteer. The moms and babies of Selah Creek will always be welcomed back, and they have regular events to bring the Selah Creek family together,” says Program Director Kiley Parish.
In 2024 alone, Selah Creek received 79 applications, highlighting the dire need for these services in the community. If you are inspired by Selah Creek’s mission and would like to get involved as a volunteer or donor, please visit their website at www.selahcreek.org.
Gail Fletcher had a simple dream of perfection: elegant surroundings, a piano bar, a place to relax, connect, and enjoy friendships. That dream turned into a much larger project, culminating in an 8,000-square-foot steak restaurant with an inside lounge and an outside casual bar at the Harbor in Rockwall.
As a second-generation Rockwall resident, Gail wanted to contribute to her Rockwall community. She has done that by providing Rockwall with its own fine dining establishment that has become a destination for many.
“I thought, why would you want to go across the lake in the Dallas traffic? I knew we had to do something better for the people in Rockwall who want the finer things, but in a convenient and elegant way.”
Gail’s vision has resulted in two distinct experiences, Sear Steakhouse and 360 Bar, both built on handcrafted food and an unending desire for excellence.
Her ongoing enthusiasm to provide the best experience for guests has been a part of Sear Steakhouse since before its inception. “When I started envisioning Sear Steakhouse, it took me months to design exactly how I wanted to create the ambiance. It was essential to me that women feel as important as men when they walk in.”
Gail accomplished her vision through distinct touches throughout the restaurant. She avoided dark and heavy decor in favor of white complemented by her signature reds and golds. Her restaurant exudes warmth, both through the fireplaces located throughout the space and in her inclusion of art featuring trees from her father’s racehorse farm in Heath, Texas, a nod to the family ties that she has in Rockwall county. Even small touches, such as a fireplace, makeup mirrors, and Merle Norman lip products in the women’s restrooms, show Gail’s focus on women guests.
Top Right: If you are planning a special event or private meeting, Sear’s top-notch staff will make your celebration unforgettable! Treat yourself and your guests to a gourmet experience at the Chef’s table or in the private dining room that includes a stunning lake view and audio visual system. Sear Steakhouse and Lounge can offer a personalized menu or a four-course dinner with wine pairings.
FOR
“I KNEW WE HAD TO DO SOMETHING
PEOPLE IN ROCKWALL WHO WANT THE
BUT IN A CONVENIENT AND ELEGANT WAY.”
Sear Steakhouse’s food offerings are inspired by the best the world has to offer, but they are rooted in local tradition. Chef Marcus Moehler started his training at Rockwall High School’s culinary art program, where he won awards and recognition. After working at some of the best restaurants in Dallas, Chef Marcus began to travel the world, going as far as Spain to apprentice. “Working in the industry, you learn all these little
neat tricks. For example, my mentor taught me how to butcher all of the steaks, fish, and poultry.”
But this isn’t a gimmick that Chef Marcus mentions to impress guests; rather it is a deep part of Sear’s unique offering. “Butchering in house is a nice way to give back to the animals and Mother Nature, but it also provides us with ingredients like tallow that we can repurpose so that nothing goes to waste.”
Mandy Mendenhall, Executive Director and Gail’s daughter-in-law, has been with Sear Steakhouse from the beginning. When she’s not enjoying a Sear’s barrel-aged old-fashioned cocktail, Mandy is working with Chef Marcus to continually mix up the food. “I like to refresh our menus seasonally so that our guests are constantly getting to try something that they haven’t
tried before.” But this isn’t a simple act of switching a salad dressing. Since each menu item is handcrafted, the team spends weeks trying a variety of ingredients, dishes, and wines to ensure each part of their menu is of the highest quality and taste. This commitment to detail is shared by the entire staff, who sample all items to ensure a clear understanding of the new dishes and complete the circle from inception, to development, to customer.
Of course, what goes better with a great steak than a nice glass of wine or an excellent cocktail? Richard, the head bartender, can often be seen across the sidewalk from Sear Steakhouse in the circular 360 Bar infusing his latest alcohol or talking about his handmade bitters. Like the food menu, the drinks feature seasonal flavors and handmade syrups so that guests are able to enjoy an elevated version of their favorite cocktails. The cucumber martini, made with fresh mint, or the Sear-tini, garnished with cranberry sugar, are two refreshing ways to enjoy your spirits while overlooking the shining water of Lake Ray Hubbard. But despite having meticulously crafted food and beverages, Gail isn’t satisfied with just owning the restaurant. “This restaurant opens the doors
to many things in life, and those things are giving back to the community, because without that, I lack a divine purpose.” Her passion is the Children’s Advocacy Center and Helping Hands of Rockwall County.
Sear Steakhouse offers a unique private dining room to host many events such as rehearsal dinners, meetings, and celebrations of all kinds.
As Gail and her team look towards the future, they have exciting opportunities for a second location to continue to bring the best food, drinks, and experiences to Rockwall County.
Gail and her staff invite you to join them for an upscale dinner at Sear Steakhouse or a more casual night out at 360 Bar, both located at Rockwall Harbor. To learn more about both spaces, visit www.searsteakhouseandlounge.com

In today’s fast-paced business landscape, one thing has become abundantly clear: collaboration is key. Now more than ever, women entrepreneurs are proving that success isn’t just about individual ambition—it’s about the collective strength of women who uplift, support, and inspire one another.
For many, the journey to entrepreneurship is filled with challenges—whether it’s navigating a male-dominated industry, balancing personal and professional responsibilities, or overcoming self-doubt. But when women come together, they create a space where each voice matters, each experience is valued, and each milestone is celebrated. It’s a powerful reminder that while the path to success may be difficult, it’s far easier to walk when you’re surrounded by a community that has your back. For women in business, these connections often become sources of inspiration, advice, and camaraderie. They offer a chance to share resources, brainstorm solutions, and, just as importantly, provide emotional support in the face of inevitable setbacks.
The benefits of networking and supporting one another go beyond just business growth. Women entrepreneurs often share a unique understanding of the challenges that come with balancing career aspirations and personal commitments. This shared understanding fosters an environment where advice isn’t just practical but empathetic. It’s about giving one another the tools to grow professionally while fostering personal development, all within a community that genuinely wants to see each other succeed.
The impact of women supporting one another reaches far beyond individual success—it can transform industries, communities, and even entire economies. When women entrepreneurs lift each other up, they pave the way for more women to follow in their footsteps, creating a ripple effect that promotes inclusivity and equality in business. The more women who succeed, the more opportunities open for others to do the same, and the stronger the network becomes.
As we continue to see more women step into leadership roles and start their own businesses, it’s crucial that this culture of support and solidarity remains at the forefront. When women come together, they are not just creating successful businesses—they are shaping the future of entrepreneurship.
One organization making a profound impact in North Texas is the Global Women’s Empire. Known for its empowering network and resources, the organization is the force behind several “Babes in Business” groups that are sprouting up across the region. These groups are specifically designed to connect, empower, and inspire women entrepreneurs of all industries and backgrounds.
The Global Women’s Empire has created a vibrant ecosystem where women are encouraged to collaborate, learn, and grow together. These groups have become essential hubs for entrepreneurs seeking not only professional development but also genuine connection and mentorship. By providing events, workshops, and networking opportunities, the Empire is shaping a future where women support women in every sense of the word— whether it’s sharing business strategies, offering emotional encouragement, or simply cheering each other on.
The rise of “Babes in Business” groups is a testament to the organization’s commitment to fostering a culture of collaboration. Each group is tailored to local communities in North Texas, offering a space where women can come together to discuss challenges, celebrate wins, and provide much-needed support in a safe, nurturing environment. The result is a network of women who are redefining what it means to be successful in business, proving that when women unite, they are unstoppable.

An afternoon spent together is priceless with today’s busy schedules. Instead of going out, staying in can provide quaint, quiet one-on-one time for a mother and daughter (or multiple daughters). Finding time on calendars is the hard part, and filling that time is all fun from there. Here are a few favorite ideas for inspiration that may spark excitement for planning those special times together.
Custom DIY charm necklaces and bracelets are trending. Gather a theme idea: birthstones, family initials, travels or even favorite hobbies, and procure charms from your local craft store or online shop. Selecting charms for each other also could be a fun way to bring delight to the crafting occasion. Necklaces and bracelets can be made for each other, or as future gifts for upcoming occasions such as a family wedding, a birthday milestone or an anniversary.
Storytelling makes for the best memories. Structure memory recall by filming or journaling interview-style question-and-answer sessions, cataloging information for future generations. Videos and notes with detailed family adventures are priceless, and we all always wish we had more of them.
Text conversations around kitchen tips or ingredient procurement seem endless. Spend some time together in the kitchen preparing favorite family recipes, sharing Mom’s best tips and tricks. Choosing freezer-friendly meals is a great way to walk away with meals for upcoming busy days. There’s nothing like Mom’s recipes!
Create your own DIY sugar scrub for a perfect gift for a special person in your life.
To make one 8 ounce mason jar of vanilla orange sugar scrub, you need:
• 1/4 cup of coconut oil
• 3/4 cup of sugar
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
• 10 drops of orange essential oil
Soften the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds. Next add the vanilla extract and the orange essential oil. Then, stir in the sugar, a little at a time. Print off a fun label or attach a ribbon to the jar, and your gift is ready. Enjoy!
