This One's For the Boys!

Welcome to the June issue of  City Lifestyle! This month, we’re celebrating all things bold, courageous, and downright fun—perfectly suited for those who know how to live life to the fullest. This issue is dedicated to my wonderful husband, Gary, and my precious son, Jaxx. It’s all about honoring the gents who are out there making an impact, whether that’s through business, service, or a cold brew at your local brewery (we won’t judge if that’s what you're most excited about!).

We’ve got a packed issue that’s sure to inspire you, entertain you, and make you appreciate the little (and big) things in life. We’re shining a spotlight on local business owners whose contributions make our community thrive. Their service is as impressive as their passion for what they do—and trust us, you’ll want to know more!

In the spirit of giving back, we’re also highlighting the amazing work of the Blue Tie Guys. These local leaders are showing the community what it means to serve with heart, and their story will leave you inspired to get involved.

Additionally, we strive to help the men in our community navigate the stereotypes and stigmas often misunderstood surrounding low-testosterone and men’s health through expert guidance.

And because we believe in playing just as hard as we work, we’re bringing you the lowdown on adult sports leagues. Get out there, meet some new faces, and relive the glory days—or maybe make some new ones. We’re also raising a glass to our local breweries, where the craft brews are as fresh as your next great idea.

So, gents, here’s to living large, loving local, and always staying true to yourself. Whether you're suiting up for an evening out or kicking back for a game, we hope this issue reminds you that there’s always a reason to celebrate.

Enjoy the read, and as always, cheers to you!

Gearing Up for Good

Coffee and Cars Rockwall Is Fueling the Community One Donation at a Time

Cars and Coffee Rockwall, founded by TJ Embree, is more than just a monthly gathering of car enthusiasts—it’s a high-octane celebration of community, charity, and all things automotive. Every third Saturday of the month, car lovers meet at Cavender Nissan of Rockwall to show off their classic, exotic, and specialty vehicles, sip coffee, and chat about life on four wheels. But there’s more to it than just the cars—this group is all about giving back.

Cars and Coffee Rockwall was created with two goals in mind: to fuel a passion for everything automotive and to make a real impact by supporting local charities. The group focuses on helping disabled and homeless veterans and neglected and abused children, along with a little love for furry friends now and then. Every contribution goes directly toward supporting these causes and making a difference in the community.

In just six months, Cars and Coffee Rockwall has already raised over $40,000—and they’re just getting started! The funds have gone to local charities like the Texas Valor Project, Toys for Tots, and the Children’s Advocacy Center for Rockwall, all of which do incredible work for veterans, children, and families in need. The ultimate goal? To build a tiny home community for homeless veterans, giving them a place to rebuild their lives with dignity and support.

Cars and Coffee Rockwall shows how a shared love for cars can fuel something much bigger—helping those in need. It’s about coming together as a community to make a positive impact while enjoying the cars we love.

Want to get involved? Reach out to  CandCRockwall@gmail.com and see how you can be part of this exciting journey. It’s all about the cars, the cause, and the community!

BLUE TIE GUY AMBASSADORS

The Blue Tie Guy Ambassadors for Children’s Advocacy Center for Rockwall County (CACRC) are a group of businessmen and leaders committed to supporting the CACRC’s goals and mission. Each Blue Tie Guy Ambassador serves a minimum of a one-year term, with a fundraising goal of $2,500. They also commit to coordinating at least one community training session for child abuse awareness and reporting, and at least 10 volunteer hours per year.

The Children’s Advocacy Center for Rockwall County is a nonprofit organization serving children impacted by abuse, trafficking, or having witnessed a violent crime. Families are referred to the CACRC by a member of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), which includes law enforcement agencies and Child Protective Services (CPS). Forensic interviews are conducted by a member of the CACRC staff to ensure a trauma-informed and age-appropriate approach. While the CACRC is a non-investigative agency, they help provide a comprehensive response when a child makes an outcry of abuse, helping support the family on a path of healing by providing counseling and family advocacy services—completely free of charge.

The Blue Tie Guy Ambassadors help the team at the CACRC in part by increasing awareness about child abuse in Rockwall County. They host two annual events benefitting ongoing programming at the CACRC: Family Fun Fest at Dallas Karting Complex on Father’s Day weekend 2025, and Bourbon with the Boys at Sear Steakhouse & Lounge in the fall.

“The importance of initiatives like Blue Tie Guy Ambassadors can’t be underestimated,” says Bobby Gladu with Artisan Masonry & Granite LLC. Gladu has served as a Blue Tie Guy Ambassador for several years. As the community of Rockwall continues to grow, Bobby knows that so too will the need for the services offered at the CACRC. He is excited to continue his support for the community in his renewed term as a Blue Tie Guy Ambassador again this year.

To get involved and support the efforts of the Blue Tie Guy Ambassadors, check out the CACRC website at www.rockwallcac.org or email Donor Relations Coordinator Sarah Ryan at sryan@rockwallcac.org. Applications to become a Blue Tie Guy Ambassador open every year in January with the new class beginning in March.

“The importance of initiatives like Blue Tie Guy Ambassadors can’t be underestimated,” says Bobby Gladu.

PLAY OUTDOORS

Welcome

to Rockwall's Recreation Scene

Rockwall’s recreation scene has something for everyone looking to stay active, build friendships, and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re into team sports, solo workouts, or just want a reason to hang out, this summer is packed with ways to get moving.

The Men’s and Coed Adult Softball Leagues bring the heat with competitive doubleheaders and plenty of post-game banter. Prefer a quick, social workout? Pickleball is booming with drop-in games and tournaments. Or go low-key with disc golf at Harry Myers Park or a peaceful bike ride through Squabble Creek Trails.

From the fairways at Buffalo Creek Golf Club to casting a line on Lake Ray Hubbard, Rockwall makes it easy to mix fitness with fun. Whatever your speed or skill level, these activities are built for movement, connection, and good times. So get off the sidelines—there’s a whole community out there waiting to play.

“Rockwall isn’t just about play—it’s about presence. Getting outside isn’t just good for your body; it’s fuel for friendship, mental clarity, and real connection. This season, explore new ways to bond with the guys while staying active and grounded.”

Disc golf delivers a laid-back challenge at Harry Myers Park with one of the nation’s top-rated courses. It’s all the fun of golf without the clubs, carts, or pressure on your swing.

Pickleball is a movement in Rockwall. With drop-in play available at Hickory Ridge Park and Harry Myers Park, it’s easy to get in on the action. The game is fast-paced, social, and beginner-friendly, making it ideal for guys looking to move and mingle. Want more intensity? Head over to Oasis Pickleball Club in nearby McLendon-Chisholm for competitive tournaments and open play at all levels.

Rockwall isn’t just about play—it’s about presence. Getting outside isn’t just good for your body; it’s fuel for friendship, mental clarity, and real connection. This season, explore new ways to bond with the guys while staying active and grounded.

Start with the water. Lake Ray Hubbard is a prime spot for fishing at sunrise or boating until dusk. Bring your own gear or rent locally— just being on the lake is an easy way to relax, reflect, and reconnect. Afterward, grab a meal at one of the Harbor District’s lakeside restaurants for good food and better conversation.

Nature lovers and fitness fans alike will appreciate Squabble Creek Trails. These wooded paths offer the right mix of peace and challenge. If movement is more your mode, the trails offer a shady escape ideal for solo rides or group jogs. Prefer wheels over walking? The trail system, maintained by the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association (DORBA), welcomes mountain bikers of all levels.

Golfers can take advantage of Buffalo Creek Golf Club for morning rounds or twilight tee times. Whether you're working on your short game or catching up between holes, it’s more than a pastime—it’s a built-in way to stay in touch.

Cap off your week with live music under the stars at one of the local breweries and restaurants. Rockwall’s Concert by the Lake series and San Jacinto Plaza performances are perfect for catching up without the need for a big plan—just show up, grab a chair, and enjoy. Whether it’s date night, guys night, or an evening with family and friends, the relaxed and friendly vibe will calm and clear your head.

In Rockwall, recreation isn’t just about breaking a sweat—it’s about showing up, staying connected, and finding moments of joy with people who matter.

Artisan Masonry: Leading with Heart

CRAFTMANSHIP, COMMUNITY, AND COMMITMENT COME TOGETHER

Behind every successful businessman lies the tale of his journey. For over three decades, Bobby Gladu, owner of Artisan Masonry & Granite LLC, has been building not only structures made of brick and stone but also a life built on solid family values and a hard-working ethic.

As a dedicated entrepreneur and advocate for Rockwall, Texas, Bobby has combined the best of both worlds—leadership in business and the spirit of service—to help those around him.

A business’s foundation, no matter how small it may be at the beginning, is often foretelling. Bobby's journey began at the age of 13, when his mother married his stepfather, a residential mason. Watching and learning firsthand, he was introduced to the art of building and became inspired to continue the path.

In its earlier years, Artison Masonry & Granite LLC focused on smaller projects such as brick mailboxes and flower beds. In 1991, that small venture became an incorporated company.

What started as a one-man operation has since grown exponentially, specializing in commercial masonry and residential and commercial granite work. With a team of 75+ skilled craftsmen, along with 12 dedicated office staff, the company has expanded its scope to include big-box grocery stores (such as the Kroger in North Rockwall), elementary schools, police and fire stations, and high-profile projects like the Love Field Airport renovation and Baylor Stadium, featuring green marble from Spain.

One of Bobby’s proudest projects remains the Richardson Public Safety Fire HQ, where his team’s masonry stands as a testament to their high-quality work.

Several personal and professional influences drive these achievements. “We have an old-school, handshake-driven philosophy,” reflects Bobby. “Relationships take precedence, and we treat our employees like family. For example, our foremen have been with me for 30-plus years, and my superintendent started with me at 17 and is now 48.”

Just as Bobby built Artisan Masonry & Granite LLC from scratch, he and his wife, Heather, built their home from the ground up. They now share their space with seven horses, twenty cows, and five cats, embracing the rural Texas lifestyle. A down-to-earth vibe permeates his demeanor and signifies another facet that drives his success: Bobby’s passion for assisting his community.

Giving back is important, and Bobby practices what he preaches by being actively involved with numerous organizations. This includes the Children’s Advocacy Center for Rockwall County, which helps educate the community about child abuse, and where he serves as a Blue Tie Guy Ambassador, and the Rockwall Leadership Class of 2025, sponsored by the Rockwall Area of Commerce (this year’s project is a Sensory Garden for the training of dogs at Patriot Paws).

Another important initiative is aimed at preventing drownings by installing lifejacket loaner stations at all the boat ramps in Lake Ray Hubbard. “This is a man-made lake about 25 feet deep, with murky waters and dark sediments. Once I was training at the lake with our North Texas Search & Recovery Dive Team. When I got to the bottom, I sunk around 16 inches  into the mud. I realized how quickly you could lose a kid in there. Saving even one life is worth all the efforts that go with supporting this project.”

“We have an old-school, handshakedriven philosophy,” reflects Bobby. “Relationships take precedence and we treat our employees like family.”
“We do what we say and say what we do. Every Monday morning, I remind my staff that our company is built off of relationships and if you take care of people, the money will follow.”

An honest work ethic is at the core of the company. “We do what we say and say what we do. Every Monday morning, I remind my staff that our company is built off relationships, and if you take care of people, the money will follow.”

While there will always be an emphasis on quality craftsmanship in materials such as brick and granite, other focus areas include:

• Custom brick: These can be used to create intricate patterns and stylish designs.

• Granite, quartz, marble, and limestone: Natural resources versatile enough to utilize in everything from custom homes to commercial buildings.

• Insulated concrete forms (ICF) construction: A highly energy-efficient and durable building material, used in every school project as storm shelters.

• Rain screen panels: An exterior wall detail that helps drainage and evaporation while creating a capillary break that can prevent water damage from rain and snow. It is adaptable to any climate, energy efficient, and cost-effective.

Artisan Masonry & Granite LLC is continuously evolving. With new branding and a redesigned website, the sky's the limit. For more information, visit  https://artisanmasonry.com/contact

STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT LOW TESTOSTERONE

As a physician, one of the most common concerns I hear from my male patients—especially those over 40—is about changes in energy, mood, sexual wellness, and muscle strength. Many ask, "Could it be low testosterone?" And often, it’s a valid question.

In recent years there has been a proliferation of testosterone replacement clinics that promise men a fountain of youth. Men who go there often think that they are talking to a physician who specializes in hormone replacement.  That is rarely the case. These clinics are usually run by mid-level providers who are not physicians. I find that they commonly misinform their patients, don’t explain the risk vs. benefits of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), and prescribe dangerously high doses of testosterone.

Let’s talk openly about testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), what it is, when it's appropriate, and what you should know before starting it.

Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone. It plays a vital role in maintaining:

• Muscle mass and strength

• Bone density

• Sexual Wellness

• Mood and cognitive function

• Red blood cell production

As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline. For some, this decline is subtle. For others, it can significantly affect daily life. Those affected by low testosterone may experience low energy, declining sexual wellness, loss of muscle mass, and mood swings.

However, these symptoms can overlap with many other conditions, which is why testing and a full medical evaluation are crucial.

Testosterone replacement therapy is not a fountain of youth. It’s a medical treatment intended for men with clinically diagnosed low testosterone—confirmed by blood tests taken in the morning on at least two separate occasions.

I recommend TRT only when:

• You have persistent symptoms that affect your quality of life.

• Lab tests confirm significantly low testosterone levels.

• We’ve ruled out or treated other possible causes (e.g., thyroid disorders, sleep apnea, depression, vitamin D deficiency, and obesity)

It is important to have a good understanding of the risks vs. benefits of TRT. All treatments have potential side effects, and TRT is no exception.

Potential benefits of TRT (when prescribed appropriately) include:

Increased energy and mood stability

Improved sexual wellness

Better muscle mass and strength

Greater mental focus

It is important to understand that replacing testosterone is intended to make a man feel better. It does not prolong life, and for older

men who feel fine but have low levels on blood tests, there is no need to replace. It is a personal choice based on the individual’s preferences.  There are risks to consider, and these include:

• Increased red blood cell count (which can raise the risk of blood clots)

• Breast enlargement or tenderness

“AS MEN AGE, TESTOSTERONE LEVELS NATURALLY DECLINE. FOR SOME, THIS DECLINE IS SUBTLE. FOR OTHERS, IT CAN SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT DAILY LIFE.”

• Prostate enlargement and stimulation of cancer. TRT doesn’t cause prostate cancer but may stimulate growth in existing cancer.

• Fertility suppression (TRT can reduce sperm production)

• Increased risk of heart attack and stroke

• Long-term dependence on TRT. When you start taking testosterone, it suppresses your body’s natural ability to make it. When you stop taking testosterone you will recover to some extent ,but you might not recover fully.

For those who choose TRT, regular monitoring and follow-up is essential. Hormone levels, red blood cell count, and PSA should all be checked regularly. Open communication about side effects or new symptoms is also important.

TRT can be life-changing for men who truly need it—but it’s not a cure-all. It should never be started based on symptoms alone or pursued for athletic enhancement or anti-aging. If you’re experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, let’s talk. Together, we can look at the full picture—your lifestyle, lab results, and health goals—and determine the best path forward.

Your health is about more than a number. It’s about how you feel, function, and live.

Smokin' Good Tacos

INGREDIENTS

1 pork shoulder (6-10 lbs)

• 2 packets McCormick Carne Asada Seasoning

• 1 bottle Stubb's Pork Marinade

• 1 bottle yellow mustard

• 1 bottle pork or rib dry rub

• Black pepper, kosher salt, apple cider vinegar, apple juice

• Aluminum foil or butcher paper

DIRECTIONS

Step 1: Prep the Pork Coat the pork shoulder in yellow mustard as a binder. Rub on your favorite dry rub, then sprinkle with McCormick Carne Asada seasoning. Finish with a light dusting of kosher salt and black pepper to enhance the flavor.

Step 2: Set Up the Smoker Preheat the smoker to 275°F–325°F, using lump charcoal and apple or cherry wood for flavor. Place a sheet of foil

on the grill grates, and set the pork on top, fat side up. Smoke for 6-8 hours, depending on size.

Step 3: Keep It Moist Spritz the pork every hour for the first 3-4 hours to build a flavorful bark. Alternate between Stubb’s Pork Marinade and a mixture of apple cider vinegar and apple juice.

Step 4: Wrap for Tenderness After 3-4 hours, wrap the pork in foil or butcher paper, adding a splash of apple juice and Stubb’s Pork Marinade. Continue smoking for 3-4 more hours without unwrapping.

Final Step: Rest and Shred Once the pork reaches tender perfection, let it rest for 30-45 minutes. Then, shred with forks or meat claws—if the bone pulls out easily, you’re ready to serve.

Taco Time! Serve the shredded pork in warm tortillas, topped with chopped onions, cilantro, salsa, and lime. Enjoy the smoky, juicy goodness of your homemade street tacos!

“Enjoy the smoky, juicy goodness of your homemade pork shoulder street tacos!”

Priceless Memories

Advice Editorial: Gift Giving Inspiration For Dads

Learn Together

Learning a new skill together, or sharing a favorite hobby, is a great way to bond. If Dad likes woodworking or fishing, finding a class to attend together goes beyond gifting tools and allows fun.

Retro Movie Night

Enjoy a movie night together with popcorn, candy and all the fixings. Home movies enable strolls down memory lane, or one of his favorite movies from his childhood makes for fun conversation. Ordering a projector for a large format screening makes the movie night feel extra theatrical.

Chef’s Kiss

Take the food pressure off Dad and invite local culinary experts to prepare a meal. A fun theme, based around his favorite vacation, such as Hawaiian food, will make the evening memorable. Alternatively, try a local cooking class together based on his favorite cuisine.

Blast From The Past

Brainstorm childhood memories together and enjoy a day reliving them. If he chaperoned a trip to the zoo, experience it again together. If short on time, stop at a favorite ice cream stand and tell him how much you cherish the memories.

A JOURNEY OF Self-Awareness

FIGHTING CANCER WITH STRENGTH AND CONFIDENCE FROM WITHIN

ARTICLE BY FATIMA DURRANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TY HARPER PHOTOGRAPHY

There are really no words to describe the quiet heroes living amongst us.

And there are many of them, although their paths may be different. Some have risked helping others while endangering themselves. Others, like Ty Harper, have endured an illness but emerged stronger and more resilient on the other side of it.

Ty’s life turned upside down in February 2024 when he noticed persistent swelling in his lymph nodes. Assuming it was just an infection, Ty took several rounds of antibiotics. However, when the swelling persisted, a biopsy was performed, confirming Hodgkin lymphoma, a highly treatable cancer primarily affecting people in their twenties.

Growing up in a military family, Ty had experienced life in Japan, Korea, and New York before settling in Dallas. But traveling, enjoying Dallas’s urban vibe, and freelancing in photography, an industry he is passionate about, all came to a screeching halt.

For the next six months, Ty was consumed with biweekly chemotherapy appointments, alongside a newly approved therapy that was physically grueling. Radiation followed. With a fulltime job, and living alone with only a few family and friends nearby to lend a hand, Ty began to question whether he had it in him to endure this process.

Beyond this external struggle, something else was waging war within him and casting doubt on his core identity.

“My reputation as a mindful, strong, intuitive person in my community clashed with the mental health challenges I faced. I expected myself to be resolute, but the treatment broke me. My side effects became so excruciating that I was hospitalized.”

CONTINUED >

Ty’s expectations of himself were high. “I didn’t feel like a 'good' survivor. In my cancer support group, others seemed to manage it better than me, while I felt I had failed to rise to the challenge.”

To help cope, he resorted to overly legislating his life with rigid self-help strategies such as detailed planners and accountability partners, but it just wasn’t working.

Deep inside, Ty knew that the version of him that was fighting cancer wasn’t the real him. “My oncologist then reminded me that I was chosen for this specific therapy precisely because I was strong—not weak. This triggered me to reframe my perspective and embrace my own vibe instead of mimicking others.”

Part of the reframing process included reflecting back on what made him so successful in college as a top-notch Sociology major at Baylor in Waco, Texas.

decided to do something—anything—that would improve his circumstances without overthinking. About 25 minutes later, he looked around to see what he had accomplished: mail had been sorted, dishes washed, clothes organized, and more. This watershed moment helped Ty regain his confidence.

They say it’s the small victories in life that change everything, and it was no different for Ty. Every 30-minute segment helped him delve into the chaos that had piled up around him.

“I want people to know they already have what it takes to survive challenges, so they should embrace that openly and confidently.”

“In college, the Forest app helped me, blocking distractions while rewarding my focus. So, I applied this philosophy to chemo. Instead of trying to consume someone else’s self-help info all the time, I began to separate all my tasks by using a 30-minute kitchen timer.”

The first time Ty applied this technique, the results astounded him. For the next 30 minutes, Ty

Breaking up his cancer treatment into small, manageable moments slowly eased the mounting frustration and overwhelm.

In November 2024, Ty went into remission wiser and stronger.

“One of the hardest realizations was how many people weren’t there for me. When I announced my diagnosis, I lost 100 followers on Instagram. Many people simply don’t know how to handle cancer, so they avoid the conversation altogether. That doesn’t mean they don’t care.”

“Post-cancer, my goal is to educate others about the importance of reaching out to friends battling illness. When others engage with our story, we all grow. I want people to know they already have what it takes to survive challenges, so they should embrace that openly and confidently.”

Our Favorite Bourbons

The “Best Bourbon” Is Truly Up To The Individual and Occasion

We were recently asked to suggest the Best Bourbon that was affordable and as I reflected on my list of favorites, providing a single answer wasn’t as straightforward as it appeared. Think of it like this. If we asked 100 people in our community what their favorite restaurant is—the answers would be varied based on the individual’s personal palate or even the moment you asked them in!

Here is our list of favorites that will have you covered at any price point and occasion.

BLANTON’S SINGLE BARREL BOURBON

Blanton’s is recognizable on sight due to the round bottle with a brass horse and jockey for a stopper. Taken from the center-cut or middle sections of the famous Warehouse H. The taste profile is sweet, with notes of citrus and oak. The creamy vanilla nose is teased with caramel and butterscotch, all underscored by familiar baking spices such as clove, nutmeg, or cinnamon.

BASIL HAYDEN’S RYE BOURBON –AGED 10 YEARS

In a sea of cask-strength offerings, Basil Hayden’s stays true to its 80 proof roots. The high rye content of its mash bill charges the nose and palate with notes of caraway and spice, while 10 years in the barrel have added leather and an attractive nuttiness. If you aren’t looking for high proof, this is a remarkable bourbon.

Pinhook pulls 150 barrels from a special lot to create this straight bourbon whiskey with a lively nose of butterscotch,

cinnamon stick, licorice, and vanilla. These aromas set the stage for a robust palate of cherry, chocolate, toasted brown sugar, and chicory. With the additional 5th year of age, what was tropical fruit transitions to darker fruit flavors and what was brighter candy is now rich and caramelized; hints of smoke now start to appear for the first time.

EAGLE RARE 10 YEAR

Eagle Rare 10 Year lives somewhat in the shadow of its 17-yearold elder sibling, but don’t let that shy you away. This is a sweet and mellow bourbon with definite signs of maturity and its orange peel and toffee aromas are a little shy, but the palate serves sturdy sweet and spice notes and a toasty finish.

OLD FORESTER 86 PROOF

While others in Old Forester’s impressive lineup claim the hearts of bourbon geeks (such as the 1920 Prohibition Style), this bottle stands head and shoulders above everything at this proof and price point. It oozes aromatic charm and follows with a palate that is lithe but in no way lacking flavor.

MCAFEE’S BENCHMARK OLD NO. 8

Sometimes you find a $20 laying around or just need a good mixing bourbon. Benchmark Old No. 8 is made at the same distillery as Blanton’s and the ever-coveted Pappy Van Winkle! The nose bears caramel notes with a delicate stone-fruit backdrop. A robust and sturdy palate with some fine leather notes mingling with dry tobacco, a touch of oak, and a hint of dried cherries. The finish is smooth and calming.
