Embracing the Summer Delights
Dear reader,
I hope that you are as thrilled as I am that summer in Michigan is just around the corner! As the days grow longer, each additional minute of sunlight seems to promise more joy and more adventure.

There’s something truly magical about summers... Rochester is abuzz with main street events, art fairs in the park, and the enchanting Farmers' Market, bringing a lively atmosphere full of friendly faces and community spirit each weekend. As the Rochester Municipal Park fills with the sounds of outdoor concerts and children delight in the joy of catching fireflies, an ordinary evening can be transformed into a magical adventure.
Summer also marks a time of major life milestones. Graduation parties and weddings fill our weekends with laughter and good company. These gatherings under sun-drenched skies or beneath strings of lights on warm evenings are moments we’ll cherish forever.
One of my favorite traditions is heading up north. There’s something incredibly freeing about escaping to the tranquility of our state’s lush landscapes. Whether it’s camping under the stars or just a quiet weekend in a lakeside cabin, the natural beauty is revitalizing.
What’s summer without the simple pleasures? Indulging in ice cream at Dairy Queen, biking along winding trails at Bloomer Park, or enjoying a concert on the hill at Meadowbrook. Each of these activities brings its own special joy and sense of connection to the world around us.
As the season approaches, my anticipation grows. Michigan summers are a mosaic of joyful experiences, and I can’t wait to dive into every single one of them. I hope you’re just as excited to embrace all that our wonderful community has to offer during this glorious season.
Wishing you a summer filled with joy and discovery,

June 2024

Hometown Hospitality with Deb Silver
CREATING COMMUNITY THROUGH FOOD.

Deb Silver is no stranger to the service industry. She has been working in restaurants for the past 30 years and is as much in love with it now as she was when she first started.
Some of you may know her as the woman with the green glasses, or the lady with the butcher knife necklace (so cool), but everyone knows her for her big heart, community focused attitude and of course, her delicious food.
Her love for cooking (and eating) go back to her earliest childhood memories of watching her father cook, where she would ask about ingredients and techniques. Deb’s family indulged her by taking her out on dinner dates to try new things. She fondly recalls her grandfather lovingly persuading her to choose the cheeseburger even though she wanted to try the more daring (and expensive), escargot.
When having dinner in her friends homes, many of them with diverse cultures, she found herself drawn to their kitchens - allowing her curiosity to ask the questions on exactly how the dishes were made and what spices were used before sitting to eat.
Silver started her career in hospitality at around age 15 when she began serving. After serving for a few years, she found herself annoying the Chef by poking around the kitchen until he finally invited her to try her hand on the garde-manger station, (french for the section of the kitchen responsible for cold dishes like salads and garnishes). It was there that she truly fell in love with the idea of becoming a Chef. Soon after, she enrolled in culinary school, and made her way through the program, ready to take on the world of cooking , a journey that took her to country clubs, high-end restaurants and ultimately, catering.
The Silver Shamrocks (her married name combined with her Irish heritage) began in the early 2000’s when Silver acted as a traveling chef, cooking for large events and for families where she planned menus, shopped for them and then showed up ready to create meals in their kitchens.
Even when she decided to take a step back in order to embrace motherhood and focus on her family, she still found time to cook beautiful meals, helped with writing restaurant reviews and kept in close touch with her friends in the industry in order to stay connected to a world she loved and missed so much. She kept that slower pace going until about 2020 when the space that “The Sham Shack” occupies today became available and the want for prepared meals was at an all time high.
Silver adapted to the “meals to go” model until it became time for people to start entertaining again. After pivoting back to catering for events she found that she had a longing for a space that allowed people to walk in and grab something delicious without having to order it ahead of time.
She had been catering for business owners all over downtown Rochester and when space opened up, friends and clients of hers encouraged her to open up shop downtown alongside them. For her, it was a no brainer, and in 2022 she opened “Side Dish”, a grab-and-go space that offers up some of Silver’s most coveted soups alongside other delicious dishes.

“Everything goes back to hospitality. It's the way you treat people when they walk through the door anywhere that matters.”
“Someone once told me, the most important gift you can give someone is your time. You can do so much with a little time, and it just feels so good to be able to give that to people.”

We asked Silver where she finds her inspiration and how she continues to evolve her cooking styles. “It’s not so much one restaurant or one dish that inspires me, its culture, it’s the people, the ingredients and the tradition behind the food. It’s appreciating the techniques and the flavors that make me inspired to learn more, to cook more.”
As passionate as Deb is about food, she is equally as passionate about her community and giving back. Over the past few years she’s created relationships with charities that are close to her heart, and have found ways to support them as they’ve supported her in the past. “Someone once told me, the most important gift you can give someone is your time. You can do so much with a little time, and it feels good to be with people.”
In addition to her catering business, Silver offers cooking classes and other meet-ups centered around food and conversation at her new rental space, Forks & Fetes. Look for her upcoming “Cookbook Club” dates as well as information about her Moonlight Dinner at Three Moons Farm featuring a farm-to-table style dinner, live music and Michigan wines.
You can find her in the kitchen jamming to the Grateful Dead, sipping a glass of wine or curled up with a cookbook.

Cake by Kim Brooks of Brooksie Cakes.
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT01.
Get fit for equipment.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
Perfecting Your Golf Swing

02.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
03.
Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.

MAIN STREET WELCOMES A NEW COLLABORATIVE WORK SPACE.
429 Main. New Place, Historical Space.

“
In everything that I do, I always look for ways we can improve our community.
If you've been in downtown Rochester lately, you may have noticed a beautiful new space occupying 429 Main Street. One of the most unique things about this address is that it has only had three occupants in its 110 year history. Hardware and implement dealer George Burr built the store in 1914, after he had outgrown his previous location across the street at 418 S. Main. Burr retired from the business he had founded and passed the management of the store to his daughter, Neva, and they continued to manage it as a family until they decided to close the hardware store and sell the building in June of 1965. A few months later, on August 30, 1965, the grand opening of Green's Artist Supply was held, introducing to Rochester residents to the second business located in the building. Green's became a beloved staple in the Rochester community, offering classes + supplies to generations of families.
Given the long history of the building, the owners of Green's knew that they needed to pass it along to someone who would create something amazing for the community to take its place. As luck would have it, a family member close to the owners of Green's introduced the idea of selling the space to Vito Terracciano, who was his employer at the time. From that introduction, the new chapter of 429 Main began to write itself.
Terracciano, CEO of Arteva Homes and Arterra Realty, is no stranger to creating beautiful spaces, as he is the founder of a luxury home building company that has built over 250 custom homes across Michigan, including many in the Rochester/ Rochester Hills area. When he was approached with the idea to take over the Green's space, he had already been looking for space to open an office in
Rochester in order to work closer to home, giving him more time to spend with his family. He also knew how special the building was to the community, and took great care in building a relationship with the family before purchasing.
Upon acquiring the building in 2022, the planning began to shift with the community in mind. "As we were thinking about how to re-create the space, I knew that we needed to find the best way to add value to downtown Rochester. In everything that I do, I always look for ways we can improve the community." Terracciano initially thought about creating apartment space on the second floor, and relocating his offices to the first floor. That idea morphed into possibly outsourcing a co-working company to occupy the second floor. Having spent lots of time in multiple co-working spaces, Terracciano had ideas about what worked and what didn't work in other spaces based off of his own experience. He quickly realized that the best way to bring his vision to life, was to create the co-working space himself. Not only does Terracciano have his team working at 429 Main, but he also acts as a tenant, a unique way for him to understand first hand what the other community members are experiencing. This allows him to not only be present in the community and create relationships, but also to ensure that the level of hospitality the office deserves is always being met. "If you truly are dedicated to hospitality, relationships go way beyond any transaction that occurs in the space".
At 429, the main goal is to offer a welcoming, collaborative space for businesses to thrive, with membership tiers that offer a variety of amenities depending on the needs of each individual. Amenities

can include; a postal address, common space, a kitchenette, copy + print access, dedicated desk space, conference rooms, and 24 hour access.
In addition to the beautifully designed co-working space, 429 is also available to rent for private events. The first floor features a fully equipped kitchenette and wet bar, diverse seating arrangements, and downtown views. The second floor is an open space providing a fully customizable setting with unobstructed views of downtown. They also have a dedicated event coordinator that works
closely with preferred local caterers and vendors to assist with event menus, beverage pairings, private chefs, servers bartenders and staff.
We here at City Lifestyles occupy a private office on the first floor, so we can speak from experience when we say that this space is special, and we're so glad to be a part of the 429 Main community.
To schedule a tour, or for more information, email olivia@429main.com , or call 248-212-0094.
Standard hours are Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm.
Hometown Favorite: TMH Salad

Since opening The Meeting House in 2012 alongside his business partner Jason Mood, Chef Chris Johnson has been creating beautiful dishes that quickly become local favorites. He works closely with his culinary team to create seasonally inspired menu items that are collaborative, unique, and of course, delicious.
One hometown favorite inspired by another.
When we sat down with Chris Johnson, Chef and Owner of The Meeting House for our hometown recipe, we had no idea that the salad recipe that we would be asking him for was actually a nod to another Rochester favorite. Many of you may remember ordering "The Marty Salad" from The Family Buggy, a Rochester Hills staple owned by the Payne family for 20 years. When creating the opening menu for The Meeting House, Johnson knew he wanted to give a nod to one of his local favorites, and that's just what he did. The "TMH Salad" has been on the menu at The Meeting House since opening their doors in 2012 and there's no plans for it to dissapear anytime soon. The simple ingredients make it easy to re-create at home, but if you're like us, we prefer to have with a nice glass of wine at their place (the biggest bonus is that they also do all the dishes.) Happy cooking!
Dressing:
• 1 cup heavy duty mayo
• 1/4 cup granulated sugar
• 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
Mix all ingredients in a stainless steel bowl with a wire wisk until combined.
For the Salad:
• 1/2 cup bacon crumbles
• 1/2 cup Tillamook cheddar
• 2 cups iceberg lettuce
Cook 2-3 strips of thick bacon, crumble after cooked to your liking. Wash and chop the iceberg lettuce. Layer the iceberg lettuce on the bottom of salad bowl followed by the crumbled bacon and cheddar. Drizzle the dressing over top. Feel free to add any protein you like - our favorites are blackened chicken, shrimp or salmon.

SCOTT STALLINGS’ WORKOUT
Like many impressionable kids with giddy enthusiasm for their favorite sport, Scott Stallings discovered his interest for golf at the young age of 3.
But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors.
Upon realizing “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,’’ Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best.
He trained his way through achieving allstate golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer.
In 2016 he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete.

“ GOLF IS A GRIND, BUT DON’T LET PHYSICALITY GET IN THE WAY OF YOUR GAME .”
With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.
“I came to the realization that it was no one’s fault but my own. The excuses and finger pointing led back to me, and once you take ownership, you take power in that,” Scott says.
“The voice within gave me some scary realizations that I always hated the doctor, and that they would tell me something was wrong. I learned a little information goes a long way, and that saved my health. Make one change today, and make another one tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.”
Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed.
“You only get one body,” he says.
Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life.
He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life.
“I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says.
Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip?
Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area.
THE WORKOUT BASICS :

KETTLEBELLS
Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training.
BARS AND WEIGHTS
A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells.
DUMBBELLS
Short barbells, usually held in each hand
MEDICINE BALLS
Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation
STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: HIS TOP EXERCISES:
KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH:
Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.
KETTLEBELL HALO:
Start by holding the kettlebell upside down at chest height, then lift the weight to head height and rotate it around the head like a halo in both directions. This exercise focuses on shoulder mobility— which is important for a good golf swing— and warms up the muscles and soft tissue around the shoulder girdle.
CLEAN TO LUNGE:
First, the kettlebell is lifted from the ground to shoulder height. Then, the foward lunge loads weight into the legs one at a time, which happens from the backswing to the downswing. The exercise increases strength in calves and forearms, which is essential for a powerful swing.
