Up North: A Michigan State of Mind

For our family, July is all about exploring Michigan and soaking in its natural beauty. Growing up, summers meant heading “up north”, a tradition we now cherish even more as we pass it down to our kids.

Over the years, we’ve lived in a few different states and came to realize something: not every place has an “up north.” It’s something uniquely Michigander, a treasured idea as much as a destination. When we’d tell people from out of state about it, they’d always ask, “Where exactly is up north?” And honestly… we never had a clear answer.

The truth is, “up north” means something a little different to everyone in Michigan.

For our family, it’s not marked by a highway exit or a town line. It’s a feeling. It’s the moment the air gets a little crisper, the trees get a little taller, and the pace of life slows down. It’s the winding roads through thick woods, the sight of a still lake at dusk and the joy of finding a family-owned ice cream shop.

It’s where we unplug and reconnect. Where we swap screens for s’mores, errands for hikes, and put our electronics out of sight. It’s camping trips, bonfires, the scent of pine in the air, and that special kind of quiet that only Michigan woods can offer. Most of all, it’s the nostalgia, built from summers our parents gave us, and now carried on through our own little family adventures.

In this issue, we’re celebrating the magic of “up north” by sharing some of Michigan’s most unique and hidden escapes, along with the stories of the passionate people who bring them to life. We hope their stories inspire you to hit the road and discover (or rediscover) a special corner of our incredible state.

So tell us—where does “up north” begin for you?

Wherever it is, we hope you find it this summer. And we hope it brings you the same peace, joy, and wonder it brings to us.—right here in Michigan.

CABIN STAYS TUCKED AWAY IN NORTHERN MICHIGAN’S QUIET CORNERS.

COZY
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY GINA JEFFRIES

Growing up, my summers were magical. My family spent our days at a family campground in Port Sanilac, Michigan. Our camper, though tight for our family of six, was filled with fun and adventure as we left Metro-Detroit and instead enjoyed the beauty of Lake Huron. Those days left me with cherished memories that I believe helped spark my love of cabins. In Northern Michigan, cabins represent much more than a getaway; much like my summers in Port Sanilac, cabins embody a wonderful opportunity for families to escape from the daily hustle and reconnect with nature.  Although my family sold that camper years ago, the idea of spending time with loved ones outside the city is something that is very important to me, and I get to continue this tradition by visiting cabins throughout the state.

CONTINUED >

My transition from staying in our family camper to renting cabins began in 2015 when I used the Airbnb app for the first time. Access to an app that let me rent other people’s homes changed everything. Once I discovered I could stay in incredible spaces at affordable prices, I was hooked! I started renting cabins on weekends as often as possible, drawn to a variety of architecture, from rustic A-frames to modern glass houses. Bringing friends and family along helped me recreate the joy I felt during my summers in Port Sanilac. At that time, I had also launched a foodie page on Instagram called “Girls Gone Hungry,” where my sister and I reviewed local restaurants. We were able to grow that page into a successful brand, gaining thousands of followers in just a few years. This sparked my curiosity about whether I could achieve a similar success with a cabin-focused page. I began taking photos of the homes I stayed in and writing about them on a blog and social media platforms using the handle Moody Cabin Girl. This experience allowed me to get to know the hosts and learn their stories. Each structure had so much history behind it, even if it was new!  I loved everything about what I was doing, and so I kept at it. Over time, I realized there is a huge community of people who love cabins just as much as I do. In this busy world we find ourselves in, cabins symbolize escapism and simplicity. They are a way to unplug and find a little bit of peace.  Now, in 2025, I have developed another successful Instagram account and fully embraced my passion for cabins. Throughout this adventure, I’ve discovered many amazing rentals across Michigan, each offering its own charm and character. I’m thrilled to share a few of my favorites with you.

This 125-year-old log cabin provides guests a unique experience that feels like stepping back in time located on Tunnel Of Trees.

TUNNEL OF TREES

If you love vintage or antique items, you will fall in love with this captivating cabin located on the famous Tunnel of Trees in Good Hart, Michigan. This 125-year-old log cabin provides guests a unique experience that feels like stepping back in time. It’s a mother-daughter endeavor, with daughter Meghan Warner Baker co-decorating and managing the space owned by her mother Kathleen Bowers. Meghan is a talented antique collector who sells her finds on her Etsy page, Great Lakes Modern. With Lake Michigan just across the street and a beautiful canopy of trees lining the road to the rental, this cabin is as stunning on the outside as it is on the inside.

The Scandinavian design emphasizes three key elements: functionality, simplicity, and beauty just outside of Traverse City.

KOTI

KOTI is a year-round cabin community located just outside Traverse City, owned by the Kelly family. Currently, there are 20 cabins on the property, making it an excellent choice for large groups. However, it also accommodates smaller parties looking for just one or two units. The Kelly family chose a Scandinavian aesthetic for the design of the cabins; “KOTI” means “home” in Finnish. The Scandinavian design emphasizes three key elements: warmth, functionality, simplicity, and beauty. The resort checks off all these attributes, and it’s a stunning sight when guests first lay eyes on these beautiful cabins. Be sure to add this place to your bucket list!

ACORN

Acorn House is located on the eastern coast of Michigan, along the shores of Lake Huron. It is owned by the Beatty family, who have created many special memories in this area prior to owning the home. When the time came to start their rental property journey, they knew they wanted East Tawas for the backdrop. This would allow them to offer guests the chance to create similar cherished memories. The cabin features a whimsical design inspired by woodland fairies and nature. The Beatty family hopes that guests will feel the same magic they experience in the area. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the lake, hiking nearby trails, or embarking on a scavenger hunt. Acorn House is the perfect family-friendly rental.

FERNSIDE

Fernside A-frame is located in the town of Indian River and owned by Holly Ellis, a Michigan native currently living in California. While she may reside on the other side of the country, Michigan will always hold a special place in her heart. She spent her childhood splashing in the Sturgeon River and exploring the woods of Northern Michigan. When the A-frame came up for sale, she took her chance and purchased the property. Buying the property would give her somewhere to stay when she returned to the Mitten State to visit family, and it would allow her to share her new home with others through rental platforms like Airbnb.

Quick Facts: 4 guests · 2 bedrooms · 2 beds · 1 bath
A gorgeous A Frame located along the Sturgeon river in Northern Michigan

Ellis is an artist by profession and uses her creativity to decorate this beautiful space. The cabin style is Elevated Hygge. Everything is oh-so-cozy with a sophisticated flair. Guests are constantly living between 2 worlds: one where they embrace all things beautiful and old, that stand the test of time, and the other where they enjoy modern convenience. While much of the furniture and decor inside the space is an eclectic mix of antiques (think beautiful lamps, fur throws, and vintage art), the cabin still has all the amenities of a contemporary hotel. Comfortable mattresses, WIFI, and air conditioning are just a few of the comforts guests can use during their visit.

A very unique part of staying at Fernside A-frame is the access it provides to the Sturgeon River. This is a popular tubing river, and guests staying at the home will notice people floating past the cabin during warmer weather. Renters can sit on the sprawling back deck and wave hello to the people who zoom by.  It doesn’t stop there! Visitors can jump into tubes provided by Ellis and float down the river to a nearby park.

This area is also a popular spot for wildlife, and it’s not unheard of to see a family of deer take a sip from the river or graze on the leaves of the trees. While guests may feel off-grid due to these circumstances, the small town of Indian River is actually within walking distance of the rental, meaning it’s easy to grab a bite to eat and shop at the local market.

When you stay at this a-frame, you truly feel transported to a simpler time where you can unplug from the 9-5 grind and embrace nature.

A gorgeous MI tree House is a modern new build rental option out of Bellaire Michigan

MI TREE HOUSE

Guests looking for a modern rental option will love MI Treehouse. This is a new build out of Bellaire, Michigan. Owners Michael and Anna picked this location because they wanted their family to have a space where their children could experience an authentic Northern Michigan summer. This property, located on Lake Bellaire, was everything they hoped for. It has woods, private access to a lake, and is conveniently located near many popular tourist towns like Torch Lake, Elk Rapids, and Charlevoix. The cabin interior has an open floor plan and a bright, airy aesthetic. Four bedrooms, a giant kitchen island, and a huge outdoor space make this 10-person rental a great option for big groups and families.

BIRTHDAY SUITE PACKAGE

From A Horse Named Doc

PHOTOGRAPHY
A Dreamy Forest Escape: The Story Behind Stillwater Stables & Stays

The world of travel and tourism has undergone a seismic shift over the last decade. More than just a place to sleep, travelers seek immersive, deeply personal experiences—ideally wrapped in a blanket of wilderness. This growing demand for intimate, design-forward, nature-anchored stays will push the outdoor travel segment into a billion-dollar industry by 2029. CONTINUED >

But not everyone chasing this wave of experiential travel came to the industry with a strategy deck and seed funding. For Rachel and Scott— founders of Stillwater Stables & Stays in Ortonville, Michigan—it started with a horse named Doc.

A HORSE, A PANDEMIC, AND A PLOT OF LAND

About ten years ago, Rachel was living in Birmingham, juggling life as a horse show mom and her business as a marketing consultant. The idea was always to sell the horse and move on when her daughter aged out of junior competition, as

most people do. But for Rachel, letting go of Doc just didn’t feel right.

So instead, she decided to build a farm.

Of course, it wasn’t that simple.

“I met Scott around that time,” Rachel recalls. “He had a horse-crazy daughter of his own, a tractor, and an irresistible amount of enthusiasm for my crazy ideas.”

Eventually, the couple found themselves walking the wooded, overgrown trails of a 60-acre property near Perry Lake—untouched forestland settled in 1837, and largely unchanged since. It was the middle of the COVID lockdown. Everything felt uncertain—except for this.

“I got a chainsaw for my birthday that year,” Rachel laughs.

SCANDINAVIAN ROOTS, MICHIGAN SOUL

Rachel, a Rochester Adams High School grad with Upper Peninsula roots, is of Swedish and Finnish descent. Scott, originally from Iowa, has Norwegian heritage. Their connection to nature and the outdoors runs deep, and their

Scandinavian background helped shape the philosophy behind Stillwater.

“Although we had always envisioned welcoming guests, we never approached it as a commercial venture,” says Scott. “Our goal was to create a home that reflects our passions and interests.”

That vision comes to life in every corner of the property — from horses, paddling, and fishing, to woodsy trails that are perfect for foraging and birdwatching. It also highlights their commitment to responsible land stewardship, incorporating innovative practices like biochar for pasture and waterfront restoration. And soon, the land will welcome a new addition: goats.

“Goats are so fun,” says Rachel, “but they also have an important job — eating invasives and helping to manage the forest undergrowth. I’m not going to say Goat Yoga... but who knows.”

It turns out this connection to nature and intentional living is something others love, too. Since officially opening in 2022, the property has become a beloved setting for wellness retreats, creative workshops, weddings, and family gatherings. It’s also home to Therapy Ranch , a nonprofit organization that uses horses to support trauma healing and therapeutic work.

“The most rewarding thing about building this place is sharing it,” Rachel adds. “Seeing others connect with the land and find inspiration or restoration here makes it all worthwhile.”

HIGH DESIGN IN THE WILD

Perched like modern treehouses on the edge of Perry Lake, Stillwater’s jet-black cabins—crafted from upcycled shipping containers—rise 72 feet above the forest floor. Through large fixed-pane windows, the outside world becomes a living mural: deer and wild turkey wander by; birds flit past; the lake is framed in the distance.

“Stillwater is a proud host and supporter of Therapy Ranch, a not-forprofit organization that provides experiential mental health interventions through sharing the magic of horses.”

Inside, the contrast is striking. Sleek, contemporary interiors offer every comfort: French cotton sheets, heated towel bars, private hot tubs, and hand-picked Scandinavian furnishings.

A LIVING, BREATHING PROPERTY

Rachel and Scott live on-site in a restored preCivil War log cabin, infusing the property with a lived-in authenticity that most “glamping” resorts lack. The barn, now home to several horses, including Doc, is also a working part of the experience. Guests are invited to visit with the animals—a feature included with every overnight stay and also available to day-trippers with a Field Pass.

Another feature is The Pony Up —a newly finished flex space above the horse stables. It comes alive with everything from intimate wedding receptions to creative workshops and private dinners. Beginning this summer, The Pony Up will also be the new home for a tasting room by Rochester’s Bitter Tom’s Distillery, bringing small-batch spirits and inventive cocktails to the venue.

COMING SOON: STILLWATER SOAK

Stillwater continues to evolve, always with wellness and nature immersion at the forefront. This summer, guests will be able to book Stillwater SOAK, a serene wellness suite tucked into the forest. It features a hot tub spa, an infrared sauna, and a cold plunge pool—designed to embrace the Scandinavian ritual of hot-cold therapy, right under the Michigan stars.

That’s why Stillwater breaks the mold by allowing single-night stays and last-minute bookings—a rarity among premium cabin retreats. “If you can get a babysitter for a Tuesday night,” she smiles, “we’ll be here.”

WHAT TO PACK

The cabins are equipped with everything you need for a perfect escape, including coffee service and cooking basics. A few special items that you won’t want to forget: Your Boots: If you’re planning to hang out with us in the barn and around the horses or if you want to hit the trails, you’ll need closed-toe, leather shoes or hiking boots.

Your favorite slippers: Slippers help keep things cozy on the hardwood floors and come in handy for skipping out to the hot tub!

Binoculars: If you have a pair of field glasses, bring them! The bird watching is fantastic, plus you’ll have fun with an up-close view of the deer, turkey, and other fuzzy critters that are busy in the woods outside your window.

That Thing You’ve Been Working On: Got a half-finished screenplay in your top drawer? An abandoned journaling project or a book you’ve been trying to get into? Use the quiet and calm to get inspired and unstuck!

MORE THAN A STAY—A STORY

Every inch of Stillwater is designed to encourage guests to slow down, unplug, and sink into their surroundings. The journey begins before you even arrive. Just 30 minutes north of Rochester, the drive winds away from traffic and strip malls into deep woods and gravel roads. By the time you turn onto Stillwater’s ½ mile-long dirt driveway, you feel officially Away

There’s no front desk. No check-in queue. Just forest, sky, and a quiet moment with a horse who’s seen this story from the beginning.

“For people who want a stay that tells a story—and to come home with a few of their own—Doc is ready,” Rachel says.

“You don’t need a farflung vacation to rejuvenate and reset, sometimes you just need one night and a backpack.”

WHERE THE WATER BREATHES

DISCOVERING MICHIGAN'S KITCH-ITI-KIPI

ARTICLE BY SHAUNA OLIVERIO PHOTOGRAPHY BY PRANEETH KODURU & JACKIE KANYOLO

Crystalline, mysterious, and utterly spellbinding… Kitch-iti-kipi, or “The Big Spring,” is a natural masterpiece tucked within the quiet wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Found inside Palms Book State Park, this untouched treasure feels like a portal to another world, a place where geology, mythology, and serenity converge.

The largest natural freshwater spring in the state, Kitch-iti-kipi stretches 300 feet across, plunges 40 feet deep, and pulses with power.

More than 10,000 gallons per minute surge up through ancient limestone fissures, delivering a constant flow of over 14 million gallons daily. The result? A pool so clear it defies belief, with a year-round temperature of 45°F that never wavers.

Glide silently across the spring on the park’s hand-cranked observation raft, an experience as tranquil as it is mesmerizing. Peering down through the pristine water, you’ll spot swirling “sand boils,” century-old tree trunks preserved in timeless stillness, and graceful trout drifting through light-dappled depths. It’s not just a scenic view, it’s an underwater ballet.

This awe-inspiring clarity is thanks to karst geology, a process where slightly acidic groundwater carves and filters its way through limestone. The spring’s source, deep beneath the surface, emerges untouched by man, untouched by time.

But Kitch-iti-kipi is more than a geological marvel. It’s sacred ground. Its Ojibwe name translates to “The Big Cold Spring,” and its waters echo with ancestral stories, none more poignant than that of a young chieftain who perished here, trying to win the heart of his beloved.

We owe our access to this wonder to a visionary local shopkeeper, John I. Bellaire , who, in the 1920s, convinced the Palms Book Land Company to sell the spring to the state for just $10. His only request? That it be preserved forever for the people of Michigan.

“A pool so clear it defies belief, with a year-round temperature of 45°F that never wavers”

Today, the 300-acre park invites explorers, dreamers, and nature lovers alike. Whether it’s your first visit or a soul-stirring return, Kitch-iti-kipi offers a rare kind of magic, one that invites you to slow down, look deeper, and feel awe all over again.

This summer, follow your curiosity north. The spring is waiting.
