Don’t Miss The Moment

As we savor the heart of summer, July unveils a radiant invitation to indulge in sunshine-drenched moments and fully embrace the present. With long days and warm nights, a serene ease blankets the air, urging us to pause and immerse ourselves in the beauty of the moment.

Amidst this mid-summer bliss, let’s grant ourselves the gift of slowing down, finding peace, and truly being present. Resisting the urge to fill every moment with activity, we can relish in the unhurried pace that summer so graciously encourages us to experience.

Finding solace in the sunshine often begins with a simple act of taking a mindful breath. Grounding ourselves in the here and now, each inhale and exhale deepens our connection to the present moment, allowing us to fully embrace every opportunity.

At the root of this sentiment lies a heartfelt reminder, “Don’t Miss the Moment.” With the awareness of the fleeting nature of time, particularly in the company of loved ones, we’re prompted to seize the precious moments that summer gifts us. Our choices in how we spend these invaluable moments shape the essence of our lives and the richness of our experiences.

Let’s embark on a mid-summer check-in, a conscious effort to prioritize presence and appreciation during these short warm months. Let’s set aside our devices, capture fewer pictures, and instead, wholeheartedly engage with our loved ones. Let’s immerse ourselves in the captivating nature that surrounds Rochester, be still and simply observe the world unfolding around us.

As we bask in the radiant glow of July, let’s pledge to discover peace within these golden days. Let’s revel in the beauty of the little things, savor each breath, and allow time to unfurl at its own unhurried pace. For these summer days are not mere moments, they are precious gifts, each one an opportunity to weave cherished memories. Let’s embrace the essence of summer and preserve every sun-kissed moment, creating memories that will warm our hearts long after the season fades.

SWEET MITTEN DREAMS

“I

The past four years have been a whirlwind for Julie McInerney, owner of Sweet Mitten Dreams.  As a busy mom of three - ages 9 ,7 and 6 and wife of 13 years to her husband Danny, (also known as her biggest supporter/the tent tear down and pickup guy) she

she has been seeing a big request for daytime brunch events and other daytime parties.  “I really want people to know that we can create a theme and an experience for just about anything that they can dream up -- this isn’t just for birthdays, and I want to give fami-

REFUSED TO ACCEPT THAT FAMILIES

WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO CELEBRATE.”

has created something that allows her to do what she loves.  What began as a way for families to create memories in their own homes has become more than Julie could have ever dreamed of. “During covid, I refused to accept that families wouldn’t be able to celebrate”, and from that thought, the idea was born...Sweet Mitten Dreams would be a unique, customized glamping experience and would lend itself to all ages, themes and locations. “Celebrations and memories don’t stop even if the rest of the world does— I just kept asking myself how can we bring that into a home and meet them where they’re at?”

With over 1000 clients to date, those overnight glamping parties have evolved into bachelorette dinners,  50th birthday parties, weekend brunches in the backyard, charity events and other celebrations of life.  As people are starting to move away from sleepovers, Julie tends to follow the trends in order to diversify offerings for her clients.   Lately,

lies what they’re looking for no matter what.”   Recently, Julie had the honor of creating an experience for a family whose child was battling a terminal illness.  “I never dreamed I would be a part of something so meaningful.  I was so honored to create a magical space for two siblings to share special memories together and that is something that I will cherish forever....that is why I do this...for people to really celebrate one another - to truly meet them where they are at.”

Over the past four years, Julie found herself being approached often by women asking her for advice,  and if she’d be able to teach them how to do the same.   Hearing from so many women looking to create something of their own inspired her to take her own business one step further into coaching.  A series of digital marketing courses led Julie to build her own platform that offers opportunities for women to help create their own version of Sweet Mitten Dreams.  She’s created a masterclass and offers a

variety of online courses that cover the “how to guides” behind starting your own business including DIY videos and templates.  “I’m passionate about helping other women start from scratch — I just want to encourage them to get rid of the imposter syndrome and go for it!”  A piece of advice she gives every new business owner is to find the thing that makes them unique.  For Julie, it’s the Michigan made snack favor bags that she includes in her experiences.   She’s found that those loving little details sometimes make the biggest impact.   Another passion of Julie’s is giving back to her community.  She’s been a part of the March of Dimes for the past several years, a charity close to her heart as her own daughter was born premature at 29 weeks.  Learning about new charities and non-profits and finding ways in which she can give back in a unique way is something she’s always interested in, as she’s found that giving back and giving her time is one of the easiest ways for to make an impact in her community.

“I’M PASSIONATE  ABOUT HELPING OTHER WOMEN BUILD BUSINESSES.”

When she’s not at her family cottage in port Austin for summer getawaysyou’ll most likely run into her in her in downtown Rochester - shopping her client’s small businesses, at the Downtown Rochester farmers market - or somewhere with her husband enjoying a margarita (she informed us that she could probably live on Mexican food for the rest of her life.)

Long term, Julie has big dreams of franchising the business, but for now she is focusing on continuing to build on her master classes and coursework to help other women get their business off the ground.  Impacting other women to create their own destiny is something she’ll never get tired of.

I ASKED MY EXPAT AND TRAVEL-SAVVY FRIENDS TO RECOMMEND BOOKS TO TAKE ME FAR AWAY. HERE YOU GO!

Blue Latitudes

Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before. The Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist travels to various parts of the world, following in the footsteps of explorer James Cook.

The Island of Missing Trees

It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet, in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic, chili peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town, the best music, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget, even if for just a few hours, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows.

The Corfu Trilogy

Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise -  My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The

Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy

Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu, where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family.

Cutting for Stone

Cutting for Stone is a novel written by Ethiopian-born, Indian-American medical doctor and author Abraham Verghese. It is a saga of twin brothers, orphaned by their mother’s death at their births and forsaken by their father.

The Museum of Innocence

The author is a Nobel-laureate Turkish novelist. The book, set in Istanbul between 1975 and 1984, is an account of the love story between the wealthy businessman Kemal and a poorer distant relative of his, Füsun.

ICE CREAM AND SUMMERTIME - THE MOST PERFECT MATCH.

Until 1800, ice cream in America remained a rare and exotic dessert enjoyed mostly by the elite. Around 1800, insulated ice houses were invented, changing the game for how ice cream was produced, delivered and enjoyed.  Today, we are lucky enough to find it in grocery stores, restaurants and in ice cream shops all over the world.

Ice cream is fascinating in that it seemingly finds its way into so many of our most important celebrations, special occasions, and traditions. The music of the ice cream truck driving through the neighborhood brings back childhood memories of running down the road with my friends and a few dollar bills to order up our favorite treats, which later became running with my own kids down the street for their first ice cream truck experience.   As an adult, those

comforting nights on the couch with a pint of ice cream and a movie feels like a treat in itself, and then of course there are the sports teams that take postgame trips to their favorite ice cream shop to celebrate, the birthday parties in which the parents operate as full time ice cream scoopers to accompany the cake, and lastly, the decadent desert courses found in restaurants featuring ice cream alongside pie, sandwiched in between cookies or stacked high on a mound of warm lava cake that later become desserts we tell our friends about.  Whether it be childhood or adulthood, it seems like ice cream is just one of those foods that become tied into our memories in so many different ways.

I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon visiting some of my favorite local ice cream shops and I wanted to share them with you!

“When it comes to ice cream, I can’t say that I have a favorite, but I will say that there is nothing better than a trip to the ice cream shop with my family and a simple twist cone on a hot summer day.”

DIY Your Way To a Bug-Free Summer

Adult- and Kid-Friendly Natural Bug Repellents from A Beautiful Mess

Adult Blend Kids Blend

(age 15 and over)

MATERIALS:

• 10 drops lemon essential oil

• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil

• 8 drops lavender essential oil

• 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil

• 1.5 ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)

• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

MATERIALS:

• 10 drops lemon essential oil

• 10 drops lemongrass essential oil

• 4 drops lavender essential oil

• 1.5 ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)

• .5 ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

INSTRUCTIONS:

In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.

*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

EXPLORING STONY CREEK METROPARK WITH JAY WILLIAMSON FROM REDSHED CYCLES

Get Out and Ride

ARTICLE BY CHRIS OLIVERIO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEN LEW

I truly believe that assets in our community like Stony Creek are what make the Rochester area a special place.

Long before Jay Williamson turned his passion into a profession with Redshed Cycles in Rochester Hills, he had been deeply connected to Stony Creek Metropark. For Jay, who has spent more than half his life roaming the park’s expansive trails, the Rochester area holds a special place, enriched by its abundant natural resources and vibrant outdoor community. “I truly believe that assets in our community like Stony Creek are what make the Rochester area a special place. Starting Redshed Cycles has only amplified that feeling for me”, says Williamson.

Adjacent to the Shelden Trails, Redshed Cycles stands as a pillar of the Rochester biking community, offering custom-built bikes and an intimate customer experience unlike any other. Jay’s philosophy is simple: build a strong community to foster mutual success. He explains, “We are nothing without the community that holds us up and we aim to support the cycling and recreation community in every way we can.” This ethos is reflected in Redshed Cycles’ commitment to showcasing lesser-known cycle brands and local manufacturers, emphasizing the uniqueness and personalized touch they bring to every product.

Stony Creek Metropark, a sprawling expanse just a stone’s throw from downtown Rochester, offers more than 4,000 acres of lush woodlands, rolling meadows, and sparkling waters. This park is a haven for cyclists of all levels, from casual weekend riders to seasoned mountain bikers. The diverse terrain provides an exhilarating experience for anyone seeking adventure on two wheels, with trails that continuously evolve through both natural growth and deliberate enhancements.

The bike trails at Stony Creek have an extensive history, dating back to the park’s inception in 1964. Initially simple paths carved through the forest for hiking, the trails have transformed over the decades in response to the expanding popularity of mountain biking. This evolution was fueled by the increasing demand for more challenging and diversified trails, prompting the development of specialized paths that cater to a wide array of biking skills.

Recent years have seen significant upgrades to the trail system at Stony Creek, driven by feedback from the biking community and the ongoing efforts of local organizations like the Clinton River Area Mountain Bike Association (CRAMBA). These improvements include the expansion of the Shelden Trails in 2021, where an additional four miles featuring technical enhancements such as berms, jumps, and rock gardens were introduced. These upgrades not only expand the park’s offerings but also ensure its sustainability and relevance for future generations of cyclists.

Stony Creek Metropark’s bike trails are more than just a recreational venue; they are a hub for community building. Events like the Shelden Mountain Bike Fest, hosted by the Huron-Clinton Metro Parks this September, bring together riders for mountain bike instruction, demos, and group rides. These gatherings are not merely recreational; they foster a culture of safety, promote the importance of sustainable trail use, and enhance the social fabric of Rochester’s outdoor community.

Redshed Cycles complements the park’s natural allure with its dedication to building a robust biking community. Jay Williamson’s philosophy of supporting the local cycling scene is evident in every aspect of his business. From partnering with local businesses for events to showcasing lesser-known cycle brands and local manufacturers, Redshed Cycles is committed to enriching Rochester’s cycling culture. Jay’s approach goes beyond simply selling bikes; he is passionate about creating personalized cycling experiences that meet the specific needs and preferences of each rider.

This dedication to community and personal service is what sets Redshed Cycles apart. Jay believes in building custom bikes that are not just machines, but true extensions of the rider. This approach ensures that each bicycle is not only a perfect fit for its owner’s body but also for their budget and biking ambitions, empowering them to achieve new heights in their cycling journeys.

“ ”

We are nothing without the community that holds us up and we aim to support the cycling and recreation community in every way we can.

Stony Creek Metropark and Redshed Cycles together create a dynamic synergy that makes Rochester not just a place to bike, but a destination where cycling enthusiasts can thrive. The extensive trails, the ongoing improvements, and the tailored services offered by Redshed Cycles make the Rochester area a premier destination for cyclists across Michigan and beyond.

Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced rider, Stony Creek Metropark invites you to explore its diverse

landscapes and rich history, while Redshed Cycles supports your journey every pedal of the way. Let’s ride together and make this summer unforgettable!
