Welcome to Rochester City Lifestyle

Welcome to the first issue of Rochester City Lifestyle, arriving just in time to celebrate spring. Like spring, which is often seen as a time for new beginnings, we are starting a journey of our own with this publication.

Spring is a reminder of how the world can come alive again after winter, just as we can find new energy and purpose. Our magazine is not just pages filled with words and images; it's a space where we can come together to explore the potential that comes with starting fresh, to embrace change, and to encourage each other's growth.

We are more than a collection of articles; we are a call to action. This magazine seeks to draw you out from the passive act of reading to the active joy of participating, supporting, and championing the people and projects that shape our shared community.

Join us as we set forth on this new journey, not just to observe but to engage. Help us nurture the seeds of change, contribute to the conversations that matter, and let's cultivate a community that’s as robust and renewing as spring itself. Thank you for standing with us from the outset. Together, we can harness the vivacity of spring to enrich, educate, and elevate our community.

Be well,

May 2024

ROCHESTER’S NEWEST HIDDEN GEM.

Main Street in downtown Rochester offers some of the best historical storefronts filled with local favorites that line the block.  What we don’t always see, is tucked just beneath some of those beautiful spaces, like the newest bar in town, that you may have not heard of.  Nestled in the basement of 336 Main Street, you’ll find one of Rochester’s newest hidden gems, The Eastman - a craft cocktail bar brought to you by Nathan Hamood, the owner

of Dessert Oasis and Trevor Wheeler, a 25-year hospitality veteran and former bar manager of another downtown favorite, The Meeting House.

The Eastman draws its name from the historical roots of the space itself, built sometime around 1890 by J.W. Eastman.  The basement of 336 Main has gone through many different iterations over the past 100 years or so ultimately ending up with a brand new identity full of art-deco and mid-century modern touches anchored by a stunning bar that seats 16.  The detail in the woodworking, the murphy-bed style tables that fold into the wall, the floating door

that hides itself in a custom closet (both ingenious solutions by Hamood's father to solve storage issues in such small space) and the hand bent arches framing the doorways were all created by local craftsmen and makers. In the spirit of looking to bring people within their talented community to help execute this project, Hamood and Wheeler reached out to long-time friends and co-workers Joel Barron, founder of Incredibly Human Studios for assistance with all of their graphic design work and Nicole Mucci, founder of Eye Collected Design, to bring her magic into the interior elements of the space.

“One of my favorite parts of being in downtown Rochester is connecting to our community and then finding ways to connect those communities to one another.”

That’s something the Eastman prides itself in…supporting local whenever possible.   “One of my favorite parts of being in downtown Rochester is connecting to our community and then finding ways to connect those communities to one another”, said Hamood, who has found continued success over the past several years with Dessert Oasis, his coffee shop located just up the stairs.  When it came time to decide on a location, staying as close to home as possible just made sense.  While some

may have seen the small basement space as impossible to transform, Hamood had the vision, and decided to lean into the challenge, ultimately designing one of the most intimate and unique spaces in our city.

Hamood knew that he was going to need someone passionate about the service industry to operate the bar side of the project and later tapped Wheeler, one of the most familiar faces in downtown Rochester, to work alongside

him. Wheeler has worked in downtown Rochester for the past five years.  He has spent much of that time forming relationships with other business owners and locals who now have become a big part of his menu inspiration.  “I make a great effort to keep everything as locally sourced as I can.  There are so many great opportunities to collaborate with our downtown neighbors, and I intend to keep doing that as we evolve and create new cocktails.”  Wheeler is looking forward to having the Downtown Rochester Farmers' Market back in town, as it will give him opportunities to shop the market for local produce and ingredients, ultimately creating cocktails that don’t take themselves seriously, but taste seriously incredible.

The Eastman is located at 336 Main Street, Rochester MI.  Operations hours are Wednesday and Thursday 5-11 pm,  Friday and Saturday 5-12 pm. Capacity is 44 guests, the space is available for private events and is ADA compliant. Contact 248.765.1979 to reach them directly.

Trevor Wheeler may be leading the bar team at The Eastman but it is the collaborative efforts of the entire crew that bring the unique flavors to the cocktails and non-alcoholic options offered.

Garnishes are something else the creative minds behind the bar spend much of their time on.  It takes thinking outside of the box to come up with finishing touches that you haven't seen behind other bars.  It might be a glass rimmed with your favorited childhood cereal, or a piece of saltwater taffy attached to the glass for that little something special.

Guests can expect the menu to rotate seasonally based on local ingredients while enjoying cocktails that have a big emphasis on playful combinations that evoke your curiosity while staying perfectly balanced.

Our favorite touch?  The part of the menu dedicated to describing each cocktail in whimsical detail, providing a vividly painted picture of what to expect before your cocktail arrives.

Under the creative and insightful leadership of Ali Woerner, Take Root, the resident company at Oakland University, embodies a spirit of innovation, community engagement, and artistic excellence that resonates far beyond the dance studio.

Ali Woerner, the driving force behind Take Root, brings to the company not only her vast experience, including a notable six years with The Radio City Rockettes, but also a deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of dance. Woerner and the company members invite you to experience how dance and music work together.

Central to Take Root's mission is its groundbreaking Dance for Parkinson's Disease program. Initiated by Woerner's response to a personal call to action, the program has grown from a single class into a comprehensive initiative offering hope, joy, and a sense of community to individuals living with Parkinson's and their families. Supported by organizations like The Kirk Gibson Foundation, this program is a vibrant example of Take Root's commitment to making a tangible difference in people's lives through dance.

Further extending its outreach, Take Root's Arts Education Impact sessions bring the joy of movement and creativity to children, empowering them to express themselves and connect with others through dance. These initiatives are a testament to Take Root's belief in dance as a universal language capable of breaking barriers and fostering community bonds.

Reflecting on the company's recent performance, "The Stories We Tell Ourselves," Woerner highlights the importance of narrative in dance. This concert, featuring works that explore personal and collective stories through movement, encapsulates Take Root's innovative spirit and its commitment to creating meaningful artistic experiences.

Looking to the future, Take Root envisions expanding its reach and deepening its impact through more performances, educational outreach, and community

Spring Floral Bowl

BRING THE BRIGHTNESS AND FRESHNESS OF SPRING INDOORS BY CREATING YOUR OWN FLORAL BOWL ARRANGEMENT.

Spring, come quickly! And if not, bring spring indoors anyway. Flowers brighten any room, any day of the year. No need to wait for a special occasion or holiday – give yourself permission to brighten everyday life with a bowl full of flowers. Place florals in an entryway, kitchen, living room space or even bathroom. Florals make any room come alive with pops of color and the smells of spring that’s just about ready to burst outside.

TREND SETTER | LIFE + CULTURE 26

Consider this your personal invitation to play with flowers by creating your very own Floral Bowl Arrangement. Use any cereal bowl in the kitchen and a bundle of store bought flowers. For extra texture and depth, look for small spring branches and ornamental grasses found in your yard to pop into the arrangement, like I did here. Then, place your floral bowl in a place where you need that burst of joy most. Enjoy!

Supplies:

• 1 bundle of flowers (about 24 stems) + floral food packet

• spring branches & ornamental grasses found in your yard (optional)

• 6” bowl (cereal bowl size)

• floral shears (or garden clippers, kitchen shears, even craft scissors in a pinch)

• 12” square cut chicken wire

• wire cutters

• garden gloves to protect your hands when forming chicken wire

• clear floral tape (scotch tape will also do)

• lazy susan to easily move your arrangement and work from all sides (optional)

CONTINUED > 27 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/ROCHESTERMI MAY 2024

Preparation & Assembly:

• First prepare the mechanics. The mechanics are the non-floral elements used to assemble a floral arrangement. These materials will act as a grid in which the flowers are built into to hold each stem in its place.

• Wearing garden gloves, cut chicken wire roughly into a 12” square. Loosely form the chicken wire into a ball and place inside the bowl.

• Use clear floral tape to make an X shape over the top of the bowl to hold the chicken wire securely into place. This will also give extra support when adding the floral elements later.

• Fill the bowl with water and mix in a flower food packet, if your flowers came with one.

• Begin to arrange floral elements into the bowl. As a general rule, you will want to start with the strongest, thickest stems and end with the most delicate stems. Here, I began with branches, then the largest base flowers followed by taller focal flowers, and finally delicate stems, grasses and wispy greens.
