EVEN FOR US ADULTS. I’m convinced that a particular delight lives among the stacks of clean notebooks and folders, crayon boxes, markers, glue, and glitter (oh, the glitter!). Local kids who go to pick out supplies this month probably won’t be feeling any No. 2 pencil-inspired nostalgia for years to come, but when we as their parents or grandparents approach those aisles, it’s hard not to be transported for a moment back to our own school days. This month, as the young people in our community transition from the carefree days of summer to the structure of the new school year, Roaring Fork Lifestyle hopes to salute the hard work they’ll be putting into academics, sports, and extracurriculars across the valley. If your little one is just starting out, Angie Davlyn of Roaring Fork Schools shares helpful answers to parents’ commonly-asked

began early with a hearty pancake breakfast. Volunteers in that ambitious group ranged in age from under four to over 70 years. They were handed five-pound burlap bags of seed – a native mix including mountain mahogany, muttongrass, penstemon, and prairie junegrass. The volunteers were separated into crews and set out across 500 acres, both on foot and in the beds of trucks. After hours of hiking across varied terrain, carefully spreading and covering seeds, the seed bags were emptied and the rock dams were in place. See our Good Times page for photos. ARTIST’S PALETTE

A FAVORITE LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHER SHARES HOW SHE DOES IT ALL IN A DAY: MOM LIFE, BUSINESS, AND ART PHOTOGRAPHY KATIE J. PHOTOGRAPHY 12
Roaring Fork Lifestyle | August 2019
MANY LOCAL PARENTS WILL RECOGNIZE KATIE GIGLIO. The Carbondale resident quickly became one of the valley’s top maternity, newborn, family, and high school senior portrait photographers since starting her business, Katie J. Photography, in 2017. As a mom, small business owner, and artist, Giglio is one of those gifted locals who seems to magically find a way to juggle all the demands of everyday life. Here, she shares how she gets it done, from sunup to sundown: 6:30 AM
Wake up to the sweet sound of my toddler Camden’s voice through the baby monitor.
6:40 AM
Make Camden’s breakfast. Make my breakfast. End up with him on my lap eating my breakfast.
7:00 AM
Go upstairs to “help” daddy get ready for work. Get cardio in for the day, a.k.a. dress my toddler.
7:20 AM
Pack Camden’s lunch. Round two of cardio: Put on toddler’s shoes.
7:30 AM
Send Daddy and Camden out the door to daycare.
7:31 AM
Sit. Breathe. Drink (now cold) coffee.
7:45 AM
Answer emails. Get gear ready for the day.
8:00 AM
Shower and get ready.
9:00 AM
Head to my studio in Carbondale to set up for today’s session with a sweet seven-day-old baby girl!
10:00 AM 1:00 PM
Clients arrive; time to get to work. Clean up the aftermath of a newborn session. (There is always poop or pee on something!)
1:30 PM
Grab a club marine and latte from the Carbondale Creamery.
2:00 PM
Cull images from today’s session, post sneak peek to social media.
2:20 PM
Realize I just lost 20 minutes on Facebook, contemplate disconnecting the internet.
2:21 PM
Back to work: edit pending sessions, respond to emails, prep blog and social media posts.
4:00 PM
Figure out what to make for dinner. Make mental note to start meal planning again.
4:45 PM
Pick up Camden from daycare.
5:00 PM
Start cooking dinner while Cam pulls out all the Tupperware, throws on floor.
5:30 PM
Daddy’s home! Sit down to eat.
6:00 PM
Start bedtime routine: bath, PJs, three stories, brush teeth, bed.
7:00 PM
Hug husband. We survived another day!
7:30 PM
Package photo orders that arrived today, wrap up editing and emails.
9:00 PM
Get ready for bed, watch too many episodes of “New Girl,” sleep. August 2019 | Roaring Fork Lifestyle

Ready for Kindergarten?
ROARING FORK SCHOOL DISTRICT’S COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT PREPARING YOUR CHILD FOR KINDERGARTEN, ANSWERED ARTICLE ANGIE DAVLYN, RFSD SENIOR PROJECT MANAGER
18
Roaring Fork Lifestyle | August 2019
IS THERE A COST FOR PUBLIC KINDERGARTEN? No. On May 1, 2019, the Colorado state legislature passed HB191262 to fund full-day kindergarten. WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL FEES AND SUPPLIES? Parents are asked to pay for fees, supplies, and field trips, which vary by school. Fees for 2019-20 are:
+ Roaring Fork Schools, non-charter (Basalt Elementary, Crystal River Elementary, Glenwood Springs Elementary School, Riverview School, Sopris Elementary): $90/year or less
+ Carbondale Community School: $538/year (includes all field trip and activities fees)
+ Ross Montessori School: $300/year for all grades K-8 + Two Rivers Community School: $500/year for all grades ($450 if paid early; fees waived for kindergarteners who are paying part-time tuition) WHICH ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ARE “IN THE DISTRICT?” The Roaring Fork School District includes Basalt Elementary in Basalt, Crystal River Elementary in Carbondale, and three Glenwood Springs elementary schools: Glenwood Springs Elementary, Sopris Elementary, and Riverview School. The Carbondale Community School is the Roaring Fork Schools’ in-district charter. Ross Montessori and Two Rivers Community School are charter schools authorized within the Charter Schools Institute, a separate district. WHEN DOES THE SCHOOL DAY START AND END? The school day starts between 7:45 a.m. and 8:10 a.m. (varies by school) and ends between 3:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (varies by school). All Roaring Fork Schools (not including the Carbondale Community School) and Two Rivers Community School have early release every Wednesday, when school ends between 1:40 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. (varies by school). The Carbondale Community School does not have early release Wednesdays, but takes one day per month for teacher professional development (no school for students). Ross Montessori does not have early release Wednesday. WHAT ARE THE EXTENDED-DAY (AFTERSCHOOL) OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS? Some extended day providers that serve our district include: Access AfterSchool/SecondShift (Ross Montessori and Riverview), Beyond the Bell (Sopris Elementary), Camp Chip-a-Tooth (Basalt Elementary), Camp Run-a-Muk (Crystal River Elementary), and Springboard (Riverview, Glenwood Springs Elementary). They’re all private providers, and all charge a fee. Most offer Child Care Assistance Program funding to qualifying parents that offsets or fully funds afterschool care based on family income.

(CON TI N U ED)
HOW OLD DOES MY CHILD HAVE TO BE TO ATTEND KINDERGARTEN? Children must be five years old by October 1, 2019, to attend kindergarten during the 2019-20 school year. Exceptions are only granted to highly exceptional children via the Early Access process outlined by the Colorado Department of Education. HOW DO I LEARN ABOUT SCHOOL PERFORMANCE DATA? The Colorado Department of Education reports on school and district-level data (including district and school performance framework ratings, graduation and dropout rates, educator effectiveness ratings, student achievement and growth data on state assessments, demographic data, and much more) through a website called SchoolView. You can access their data dashboards at CDE.State.CO.US/Schoolview. Information about the Roaring Fork Schools (including student, staff, and family survey data) can be found at RFSchools.com. WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SIZE OF A KINDERGARTEN CLASS?
+ Carbondale Community School: 14 + Roaring Fork Schools (non-charter): 16-20 (with one or two staff) + Ross Montessori School: 22 (with two adults) + Two Rivers Community School: 18-20 (with teacher’s aide) IS MY CHILD READY FOR KINDERGARTEN? The only requirement that determines if a child is ready for kindergarten is that he/she needs to be five years old before October 1. It is the school’s responsibility to be ready for kindergarteners of all levels, rather than the child’s responsibility to be ready for kindergarten. Here are a few things that will help children be more successful in kindergarten:
+ Read with your child everyday and ask questions about what is happening in the story.
+ Help your child know his/her first and last name and practice writing it.
+ Teach your child to follow two-step and three-step directions. + Teach your child to count up to 20 objects. + Practice getting your child ready to put on shoes, coats, and snow pants independently.
+ Give your child time to play and interact with peers so they can practice sharing and problem-solving.
+ Practice identifying, managing, and talking about feelings with your child.

WALT DISNEY WORLD. It’s the most magical place on earth...complete with hugs from Mickey Mouse, a wink from Minnie, a big ole grin from Goofy, and a warm greeting from all of the other fabulous characters we’ve come to know and love. That constant buzz from the Disney theme parks and the nonstop hustle from hotel to monorail to fast pass lane to the fireworks show and back again can certainly wear out even the most experienced traveler. All of that intertwined with the ongoing question of where to stay--it can be quite the puzzle to book the best location, price and amenities. But, with The Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World, you can experience the magic like never before. Secluded behind the gates of Golden Oak at Walt Disney World Resort, this Four Seasons escapes the rush of tourists eager to grasp that prime time Disney experience. Instead of a view of the highway or parking lot from your window, what about a golf course, skyline or lazy river view? Seeking an alternative to that never-ending line for the public bus? How about a private transportation system arriving right to the door? In search of a couples or family retreat that just feels so different from the typical Disney tour? Look no further than the only Central Florida resort to earn the AAA Five Diamond Award. It’s true that Disney World can provide a dream-cometrue vacation, but, sometimes, you’re in the mood for the Tower of Terror drop and the thrill of Test Track without all of the commotion that can come with it. Shift that Disney waffle for a healthy bite or caffeine fix at the Lickety Split shop, conveniently located downstairs in the lobby. Book an hour-long tennis lesson before your early-afternoon spa sesh. Compete on the course of the Tranquilo Golf Club before winding down at a Dive-In Movie, perfect for a pair or for the entire gang. Venture to the 17th floor terrace of Capa, where you can indulge in a relaxed steakhouse dining experience while gazing about at the view of the parks’ fireworks--right from the comfort of your own lounge seating. This property is also home to the only adult-only pool on Disney property. Now that’s magical! Of course, you’ll still have a chance to be immersed in bits and pieces of that one-of-a-kind Disney adventure. From the renowned Explorer Island, a five-acre waterpark recognized nationally for its family-fun center complete with a riveting waterslide, climbing wall, sport courts, lazy river, hanging swings, and even a splash zone, to the twiceweekly Disney Character breakfast offered at Ravello, complete with all of those Disney pals, you’ll have just the right amount of magic awaiting in the resort. There’s even an opportunity of a lifetime inside the resort to have a personalized meet-and-greet with all of your favorite Disney pals. Sit next to the cast of Frozen in a private dining space or plop up right near Goofy for this memory of a meal! CONTINUED >

College is for Me!

A MESSAGE TO EVERY ROARING FORK VALLEY KID FROM SWOOP, COLORADO MOUNTAIN COLLEGE'S MASCOT
Colorado Mountain College President Dr. Carrie Hauser and Swoop recently visited fifth-graders at Basalt Middle School as part of the pair’s multi-year “College Is for Me” tour. They are visiting fifth-grade classes throughout the college’s footprint to encourage students to finish high school, set goals for their futures, and learn how college and postsecondary training can make those plans a reality.

But their faces really light up when President Hauser asks what they want to be when they grow up. “Teacher! Doctor! Photographer! Professional ski racer!” they tell her. She tells them CMC students have gone on to do all these things, and much more. More than ever, you need a college degree to make those dreams come true.
