As someone who was raised in the rural south without much access to art education at an early age, this speaks to me. We had no art centers in town, but my school district had a lone part-time art teacher who visited classes monthly for 30 minutes. She would roll her cart into the room, play music for us, and deliver a brief tutorial on the color wheel or some other basic lesson. Often she would give us quiet time to paint or draw whatever we wanted, no rules, which felt like luxury. This teacher, saintlike, would then stop to visit each child and personally compliment his or her work. In a place where kids routinely grew up underexposed to the possibilities of their own creativity, our art teacher—30 minutes at a time—did what she could to validate what Einstein called the “irresistible urge” of the artist in each of us. Thank goodness we had her; it’s no wonder we hungered for her visits.

Sunlight Skier Appreciation Day and United Way Benefit On January 11, Sunlight Mountain Resort hosted its 34th annual Skier Appreciation event. The '80s-themed bash featured games, retro music, a costume contest, and other festivities. About 1,200 skiers and guests attended. PULSES WITH PEOPLE AND VITALITY. Triptych murals, fantastic sculptures, colorful gardens, pocket parks, and a pump track speak to this turned-on mountain town. Hollis Sutherland, a key player on one of the town’s many boards, appreciates the many “lovely places to stop. The branded signage is a friendly greeting, helping visitors find their way. If they’re not sure what they are looking for, it’s an invitation to ‘come this way, there are cool things for you to discover here.’” Colorado Creative Industries, a division of the state’s Office of Economic Development & International Trade, states online that it

formalized the Carbondale Creative District (CCD) in 2016 to “promote, support, and expand the creative industries to drive Colorado’s economy, grow jobs, and enhance our quality of life.” The CCD is essentially Carbondale Arts (CA) on steroids. CA Executive Director Amy Kimberly planted the original seed for designation in 2012 and has been watering and fertilizing since. The fruits of these actions powerfully expand the capabilities of the already-prolific CA. Technical assistance, advertising and marketing support, access to grants, leadership training, and funding for Creative Districts help towns pursue a multitude of creative and economic objectives— quite successfully, as Town Manager Jay Harrington sees it.“[It’s] been a wonderful community partnership that closely aligns with the goals of our Comprehensive Plan,” he notes. “It has completed some impressive projects that have enhanced the local economy and supported our community values.”The Rio Grande ARTway is but one of many projects initiated by the District, and its impact is significant. This small mid-valley town—with no internationally recognized hot spring, no lofty ski resort— takes pride in its laboring past, recognizing that ingenuity and possibility arise from process, inclusivity, diversity, and hands-on effort. Harnessing the creative power of hundreds of volunteers, the elements along the ARTway make the past relevant and give direction to the future.As the sap rises this spring, so too will the Mural Express Project, showcasing the artistic soul and entrepreneurial spirit of Carbondale. Murals will connect the ARTway with the heart of downtown and business hubs throughout town.This all goes beyond mere ‘beautification,’ or art for art’s sake. Positive economics are inherent to community vitality and livability. The CCD member logos sprinkled throughout town businesses and studios bring more than just cool optics; they symbolize the community’s desire to unite and move forward collectively, versus competitively. The brewing and distilling industry are case in point. Roaring Fork Beer Company’s Aly Sanguily believes that “Carbondale businesses go deeper than just what’s on the sign outside of their door. Allowing tourists to see we are all part of one artisan conscious group creates a more in-tune understanding of who Carbondale is and striving to be.” Within this understanding, the CCD then becomes a dynamic, two-way relationship. Connie Baker of Marble Distilling Company promotes “the Creative District in all our marketing materials to drive press and visitors not only to us, but Carbondale in general.” The CCD legitimizes locals who support one another. “Brewing and distilling are creative endeavors,” notes Patrice Fuller of Carbondale Beerworks, “but we also feature local musicians, photographers, and artists here to showcase local creativity. I have a mural in one of my bathrooms done by Alex Cruz. [Other murals] have implemented all things Carbondale into them. Tourists can see the talent we have here.”Still, whispers of ‘gentrification’ do not go unheard. Access to the Creative Industries’ Space To Create initiative has enabled the CCD to move the needle on the town’s housing issue. A feasibility study in 2017 and 2018 identified need, priorities, and possible pathways to affordable housing and maker space. While it did not result in an immediate solution, the groundwork has been laid for potential investors, developers, and landowners down the road. “Carbondale has been an extraordinarily creative community for as long as I’ve known it,” says Mayor Dan Richardson. “What the Creative District designation did was to bring clarity to how different sectors relate through creativity, more intentional collaboration between these sectors, and more awareness to the general public about how integral the creatives are to our thriving community.”

GLENWOOD ARTISTS, REJOICE. The cityoperated Glenwood Springs Community Art Center, housed at 601 East 6th Street in the same location of the former Center for the Arts, is open and ready for students to once again fill its space with creative energy. This spring, dance and martial arts classes are on offer alongside kids’ art lessons, weekly senior

art afternoons, a Monday mosaic group, a full lineup of ceramics classes, and more. When the center ceased offering classes in 2017 amid the financial struggles of its operating organization and widely-publicized exit of
its director, local residents were not only shocked but saddened by the sudden loss of the town’s most active arts hub. If it closed for good, they wondered, where would Glenwood’s kids learn to dance? Where would budding young creatives develop their talents, or adults gather to engage with the local arts community? Although the Glenwood Springs Arts Council that had run the center for years vowed to repay its debts and find ways to continue serving the community, they ultimately moved out of the 6th Street space. Without any guiding force of leadership, its fate seemed unclear. The city, recognizing the center’s cherished role in local life, took quick action: In the fall of 2017 it formed a brand new Arts and Culture Board to help advise officials on the future of the arts in Glenwood. By early 2018, safety upgrades to the historic 6th Street building (which was already city-owned) took place and discussions began about how to bring the center back to life. “The city of Glenwood understood that having an arts center in town is valuable to people who live here and visit here,” says Community Recreation CONTINUED >

Coordinator Tom Schwenk, who oversees programming for the newly re-named Community Art Center. “It is now funded by the Parks and Recreation Department, and we’re working with several teachers and leaders to continue building on the classes we’re hoping to offer this year.” Although the center held a limited number of classes in summer and fall of 2018, the full spring 2019 lineup of programs cements its status as back in the swing of things. All it needs now, Schwenk notes, are the students. “We’re really working to get the word out that the center is open again, and that we’re ready for people to sign up for classes,” he says. Locals can research class topics, schedules, and registration details via the Parks and Recreation website, GlenwoodRec.com. Events are also posted on Facebook, such as the center’s Open House on February 2. From 12-3 p.m., the public is invited to stop by, see the revitalized space, and meet its instructors over refreshments, entertainment, and free mini-lessons. “We hope this will be a great way for the community to learn about what we’re doing,” Schwenk adds. “The arts center is back.”

a painted legacy
A LOT CAN HAPPEN IN TWO YEARS. This is truer than ever for Nicolette Toussaint, who retired as editor of Roaring Fork Lifestyle in 2017 to pursue her lifelong passion for art. “Since becoming a full-time artist, I have not only begun painting in oils, but also painting humongous canvasses. I’m currently working on a triptych of buffalo,” she says. “My subjects are from Colorado and the west, and I have been painting a lot of wildlife. Many of our mountain species are endangered by a warming climate, drought, and habitat loss, and I am documenting this heartbreakingly beautiful moment of change and loss.” Toussaint has been visible in the arts community as both a featured painter in valley shows and a teaching artist with local organizations. Her work is currently on display at the Snowmass Chapel and the Eagle County Building in El Jebel, and in March will appear at the Rockies West National watercolor exhibition in Grand Junction. This month she’s leading classes at Rifle’s Bookcliffs Arts Center and is also scheduled to teach at the Basalt Regional Library in April. Between engagements, Toussaint can
