Art & Heart: The Gratitude Issue

Opening the cover of our annual Gratitude Issue at River Oaks Lifestyle is one of my favorite moments of the year. It’s a reminder that the best stories aren’t flashy - they’re faithful. They’re the everyday acts of generosity and leadership that quietly strengthen our neighborhoods and, together, make a bigger difference than any one of us could alone.

Anchoring this edition is our Roots of Goodness feature, which lifts up neighbors and nonprofits whose steady, purposeful work is changing lives. I can’t wait for you to meet them, hear what sparked their calling, and see the practical ways we can all join in.

In these pages, you’ll find plenty of inspiration, ideas that leave you feeling especially hopeful, and a fresh look at Houston’s artist scene - galleries to visit, a new book that is making waves and compelling voices shaping the cultural pulse of our city right now. Consider it your invitation to step out, see something new, and support the creatives who make Houston hum.

Most of all, thank you. To our readers: your notes, ideas, and loyal attention keep us focused on what matters. To our local business owners: your partnership and advertising fuel this mission and reflect the heart of this community - we’re grateful to champion your work each month.

Know a person or organization we should spotlight next? Send us a note—your recommendations help us shine the light where it’s deserved. And if this issue moves you, please pass it along to a friend and connect with us on Instagram: @ riveroakslifestyle.

We love hearing from you!

International lifestyle shapes Claudia Barreda’s vision

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CLAUDIA BARREDA
Architect leans to modern style for design aesthetic.
Claudia Barreda designed this home when she lived in Mexico.

Claudia Barreda was born in Lima, Peru, educated in Australia and lived and worked in Mexico and a variety of cities in the U.S. before settling in Houston. All of those places helped shape the creative eye of the architect-designer who now works at the Laura U Design Collective. Claudia is the Houston Design District’s November Leaders In Design honoree.

“I always wanted to be a doctor and I started college as pre-med, but realized that was not for me. Growing up, I was always curious about houses and whenever we went to a new house, I would look at all of the details,” Claudia says. “My uncle was an architect and I watched him design homes, and I thought that one day I would design my own house.”

In Houston, Claudia has also worked for Mirador Group, Cannon Design and Brickman Design. Her frequent moves were made because her husband’s job required that they move around.

In each locale, she has appreciated its native materials. Here, she turns to Texas limestone, white oak and stucco. But she also values the durability of manmade materials such as wood-like exterior materials and aluminum cladding.

Now married and a mother of three, she studied architecture at Canberra University in Australia because her grandfather had been the Peruvian ambassador to Australia and she had a number of family members there. When the Shining Path guerillas brought violence to Peru, her father planned to move their family to Australia and sent Claudia there first for school.

It was there she gained respect for sustainability and passive building some 30 years ago. “My education had a big impact on being mindful about the environment and building things that are timeless. You make things with less waste and nothing trendy because you want it to last for a very long time.”

IF YOU EAT ONE THING

EXECUTIVE CHEF KIRK THOMPSON OF LEO’S RIVER OAKS EXPLAINS ONE OF THE RESTAURANT’S MOST POPULAR DISHES, TRUFFLE AGNOLOTTI.

Houston's most historic theater debuted its decadent neighbor last year, and reservations at Leo's River Oaks have continued to grow. The New American restaurant, inspired by New York's most stylish eateries, is decorated with modern Art Deco chandeliers, feathered light fixtures, and has a handsome, warm ambiance. Guests can enjoy selections from the raw bar, prime steaks, as well as several seafood dishes and classic offerings including an Umami Royale Cheeseburger and Potato Dauphinoise. Since the doors opened just over a year ago, diners have raved about the Truffle Agnolotti, which has quickly become one of the mainstays of the menu. leosriveroaks.com

THE PASTA

The dough at Leo's River Oaks begins with Italian "00" flour, extra-fine semolina, and a generous ratio of egg yolks, creating a rich golden color and supple texture. After resting, it's sheeted thin and cut into strips, then filled and sealed into delicate agnolotti.

THE FILLING

"The filling layers earthy, savory, and umami flavors," said Executive Chef Kirk Thompson. "Cremini mushrooms are slowly

sautéed with onion, garlic, and herbs, then folded into whipped ricotta with fresh eggs. Truffle pâté, yuzu vinegar, porcini and soy powders, Parmesan, a touch of truffle oil, and chives add depth, brightness, and a subtle citrus lift. The result is both creamy and woodsy.."

THE MIX-INS

The agnolotti are nestled in a concentrated mushroom stock enriched with sherry vinegar, herbs, and butter. Seasonal sautéed mushrooms bring texture and an added forest-like aroma. According to Thompson, the broth delivers an intense, slow-cooked essence that ties the dish together and coats each bite.

THE TOPPINGS

The dish is finished with ribbons of Grana Padano and a generous shaving of fresh truffle. "The Agnolotti balances nutty, savory notes with luxury, and the aroma of truffle lingers, making the final presentation really indulgent," says Thompson.

ARTFUL Appreciation

LOCAL ARTISTS SPOTLIGHT GRATITUDE WHILE SHAPING HOUSTON’S CULTURAL LANDSCAPE.

ARTICLE BY ALLYSON STRACZEK

As we enter the season of gratitude, there is a lot to be thankful for in the Houston arts and music scene. Richie Kaye is an artist who has performed in the U.S. and Asia and now focuses on singing live music for private parties and corporate events. He is grateful for every opportunity to entertain the audience. Taft McWhorter is an accomplished artist now focused on supporting emerging artists in Houston’s art scene. Not only does our city offer worldclass musicians and artists, but these artists are committed to giving back.

My goal is to help people have a great time,” says Richie Kaye. “I hope my performances are upbeat so people can be happy.”

Kaye specializes in creating happy, festive events tailored to each professional engagement. He performs as a solo act or brings in musicians to form a duo, trio, or quartet. This performance flexibility, combined with his diverse musical catalog, allows each event to be customized to the audience, venue, and desired atmosphere. With a repertoire that spans genres such as swing, showtunes, honky-tonk, classic Nashville, countrypolitan, bossa nova, light rock, blues, and originals, his events always entertain guests. Richie is available to play his musical stylings for holiday events and private parties, where he aims to provide light musical entertainment with satisfied guests.

“It’s important to me that we never play too loud on stage so the audience can interact with each other and have meaningful conversations,” says Kaye.

After learning to play the guitar as a boy, Kaye reignited his love of music during his time overseas in Japan and China. Performing on international TV exposed him to a unique set of experiences and perspectives, including entertaining 35 million people in Mandarin. He also had the opportunity to perform in the New York subways.

His sound continues to evolve as he enjoys his musical journey. Kaye has recorded 10 albums and currently works on his latest one in Southwest Louisiana, focusing on original music.

Having lived internationally and in various parts of the United States, Kaye has found his home in Houston. “I love being a Texan. The people are welcoming and friendly.”

Always smiling, Kaye loves to perform for others. He carefully plans each musical event with precision to execute the client’s vision. From recommending venues and seating arrangements to selecting the right music, he works closely with each client. “I view each performance as an opportunity to entertain,” he explains. “Let’s have a good time tonight.”

TAFT McWhorter

Taft McWhorter and his wife, Dana, have been partners for over 36 years, evolving their journey into Taft McWhorter Art. Taft’s work has been showcased in over 100 exhibits, and they’ve collaborated with companies like the Houston Astros and Texans. With private studios in Los Angeles and Houston, Taft and Dana are shifting their focus to paying it forward with other Houston artists.

“We have been lucky to experience great mentors,” reflects McWhorter. “Now, we are committed to providing a platform for artists to gain credibility and exposure, just as we did.” Their dedication to nurturing new talent is a testament to their appreciation for the art community and their desire to give back.

Taft and Dana created 50 Artists Houston to provide a platform for 50 artists. McWhorter selected artists ranging from those just starting their careers to established figures, such as David Adickes, a beloved icon in the Houston arts community.  Adickes was known for his artwork, which includes pieces such as Sam Houston, We Love Houston, Virtuoso, and dozens of massive presidential busts.

After the success of the first book, Taft and Dana worked with DiAngelo Publications on a second volume. 50 Artists Houston, Vol. 2, features 49 newly highlighted artists and one returning artist. Each artist receives an eightpage layout showcasing their artwork, bio, medium, tools, and photos of them in the studio creating their artwork.

“We wanted to focus on artists who participate in the Houston arts scene and the community,” explains McWhorter.

Taft and Dana have taken great joy in witnessing the growth of the spotlight artists. “The artists featured in the books are now being viewed by their clients in a new light. Being featured in the book has given them a significant credibility boost,” says McWhorter, with a sense of pride in their role in the artists’ success.

Local art aficionados can purchase both volumes from DiAngelo Publications. To see the art in person, visit Spring Street Studios through January 19, 2026, Volume 2 artists are featured in a three-month exhibit.

R O O TS OF GOODNESS

Houston is home to a thriving network of nonprofits that have spent decades addressing the city’s most pressing needs. From supporting children’s education and family well-being to providing health services and community resources, these organizations have built programs that strengthen neighborhoods and create opportunities. Their volunteers, leaders, and supporters collaborate across initiatives, demonstrating the power of collective action to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Houstonians every day.

WE ARE SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON THE PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® Dream Home Campaign

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

This year, Houston was selected as the largest market for their Dream Home campaign.

“Our goal is to raise $1.5 million with this campaign,” says Rebecca Levine, senior advisor. “All of the money raised will go to funding the mission of St. Jude to ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude,” explains Levine. “Each cancer treatment costs $450,000 per year, and children usually have multiple years of treatment. The Dream Home fundraiser will provide treatment for one child’s cancer battle.”

The 3,000-square-foot Dream Home, located in Northwest Houston, is built by Empire Homes at no cost. Tradespeople and suppliers have generously donated labor and materials for everything from the concrete to the flooring, ensuring that all proceeds will go towards childhood cancer treatment.

To purchase a $100 ticket, visit dreamhome.org or call (800) 303-4413. Only 15,000 tickets will be sold. The winner will have the option to move into the home, use it as an investment property, or sell the 4-bedroom house. The newly built home, along with other high-end prizes, will be given away live on FOX 26 Houston on Wednesday, November 19, 2025. dreamhome.org

Families to Freedom

Families to Freedom is a nonprofit that helps victims of domestic violence reach safety by removing a critical barrier: transportation. The organization offers free rides to shelters or family members, along with fuel cards, bus tickets, and other means to ensure no one is left without options.

“I discovered how many victims and their children were turned away from domestic violence shelters due to a lack of capacity,” says Sarah Nejdl, Founder & CEO. “Once I became aware of the issue and could envision a simple solution to give a ride, I just had to make the idea become a reality.”

In the past year, the Houston office transported 580 victims and 544 children on 700 trips. Most of these rides took clients to crisis centers that could accept them when local shelters could not. Families to Freedom also assists survivors relocating to relatives or moving between programs as they wait for housing.

Gratitude is important to the mission of Families to Freedom. “We get words of gratitude from our survivors all the time,” Nejdl says. Looking ahead, she hopes to expand services across Texas with support from both state funding and community donations so more victims can find their way to safety. familiestofreedom.org

Hatching for Health

Hatching for Health: The Jessica Hatch Show on CW39 gives families facing medical challenges a platform to share their stories. The program was created by Jessica Hatch, founder and host, who says her work in healthcare revealed the need for advocacy and education.

“Growing up, my heart was always in a place of wanting to give back to the Houston community. Now, as an adult working in the healthcare field, I’ve seen firsthand the medical challenges faced by many families and individuals. This experience sparked a deep passion in me to advocate and educate for those who often go unheard,” says Hatch.

Through the show, families recount their personal experiences, particularly the early days of receiving a diagnosis. Hatch recalls filming with Savannah, a 17-year-old battling osteosarcoma. “Even through all the ups and downs, their smiles and positive attitudes shine through. Their faith is truly inspiring,” she says.

For Hatch, positivity is central. “Raising awareness about rare diseases can be tough, but it’s a cause I’m truly passionate about. I stay positive knowing that I’m making a difference, no matter how small,” she says.

Gratitude, Hatch adds, also plays a role. “Maintaining a positive mindset can significantly help anyone navigate through tough times.” hatchingforhealth.org

Junior League of Houston

The Junior League of Houston is celebrating its Centennial Anniversary, reflecting on a century of service, community programs, and volunteer leadership. Founded in 1925, the organization has connected people through meals, recipes, and shared initiatives that continue to shape Houston today.

“The Junior League of Houston’s Luncheon Club, and later the Tea Room, have served as a space for hospitality, purpose and community,” says Katherine Doyle, President of the Junior League of Houston. “The meals shared within the Tea Room, from The Pantry, and through the League’s cookbook recipes have connected the community for a century.”

Funds raised through the Tea Room supported the League’s first community initiative, the Junior League Health Center, which provided prenatal and pediatric services for families. Today, proceeds continue to sustain programs focused on children’s education, health, and family needs.

“We are here today thanks to our first president, Adelaide Lovett Baker, who was a visionary leader and a founding member of the Junior League of Houston,” Doyle says. Looking ahead, she notes, “When Junior League members come together, anything is possible. Our shared history and impact will continue to inspire future Junior League members and Houstonians.” jlh.org

H O P E

Begins with YOU A SEASON TO SEE THE UNSEEN

The holidays have a way of calling us back to what matters most—faith, family, compassion, and the quiet but powerful act of giving. As lights go up and calendars fill, there are still many who sit in silence, carrying burdens too heavy to bear alone. But what if this season, you could be the spark that changes everything for someone else?

The founders of City Lifestyle, through their private foundation, are once again launching its annual Christmas Giving Campaign—a heartfelt effort to seek out and support individuals and families who have quietly fallen through the cracks. The mission is simple: to bring light, dignity, and hope to those who need it most.

Since its beginning just four years ago, this initiative has grown from a humble idea into a life-changing movement. Last Christmas alone, more than 200 families across the country received unexpected support—financial relief, but also something even more powerful.

“We don’t just send checks,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond charity. “This is about community,” Matthew adds. “We believe we’ve been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing.”

Every story begins with a nomination. Often, it’s a neighbor, coworker, friend, or teacher—someone who’s been quietly carrying too much for too long. One past recipient, after receiving unexpected support during a time of deep personal struggle, wrote:

SCAN TO NOMINATE

“We send a message: You are seen. You are loved. And you are not forgotten.”

“Beyond the very practical solution of receiving funds to fix my car, this thing you guys worked together to do is bigger than that. I carry the Christmas card you sent in my purse. When things get really hard, I pull it out and remember what it felt like to be seen. That card represents hope— that change for the better is possible. I’m not sure how many people get to carry hope around in their purse. But I do.”

Another wrote in after her husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer and unable to work:

“This support has blessed our family not only financially, but emotionally and spiritually as we trust God to meet our needs throughout this difficult time. Thank you to our anonymous friend and to your foundation. What a joy and gift to be part of God’s family!”

Each year brings countless stories like these—real lives touched by simple acts of kindness. Some use the funds to pay overdue bills, others to afford groceries, medication, or repairs. But no matter the circumstance, the impact is the same: hope is restored.

This season, you have the opportunity to be part of that. The campaign is now open to nominations—completely confidential and prayerfully considered. Whether it’s someone battling illness, facing unemployment, or just in need of a helping hand, you can bring them a moment of grace that will ripple far beyond Christmas morning.

“Knowing my mom was chosen filled my heart with indescribable joy,” said another past recipient. “Your generosity doesn’t just brighten her life; it inspires hope and faith in all of us. It enables her to stay in her home and get back on her feet.”

Nominations are open from November 1st to December 5th, 2025. To submit someone you know, simply scan the QR code or visit @CityLifestyle on Instagram, where you’ll find the nomination form in the bio.

This holiday season, let’s give more than gifts. Let’s give each other the gift of being seen. Because sometimes, the smallest gesture becomes someone’s greatest miracle.

To nominate someone in need, visit: KingdomBuildingFoundation.org or scan the QR code.
