Roots of Goodness

Welcome to our special Gratitude Issue! This is always one of our favorite editions, as it gives us a chance to pause, reflect, and share stories that inspire. As we step into the season of Thanksgiving, we want to celebrate the many ways gratitude touches our lives and connects us to one another.

In these pages, you’ll find heartwarming stories, including our special feature, Roots of Goodness. This piece shines a spotlight on incredible Houstonians who are making a real difference—whether they’re uplifting their local neighborhoods or spreading positivity far beyond our city’s borders. Their work reminds us that even the smallest act of kindness can spark meaningful change.

As we head into the holiday season, we hope this issue will inspire you to think about how you can give back to causes you care about and those you love. Whether it’s lending a helping hand to a neighbor, volunteering, or supporting local organizations, there are so many ways to make an impact. The spirit of giving is truly contagious, and there’s no better time than now to spread it!

We also want to hear from you. Do you know someone who’s quietly making our community better every day? We’d love to share their story in future issues. Reach out to us, because together, we can continue to highlight the goodness that surrounds us.

Thank you for being a part of this community and for all that you do to uplift others.

SENSORY EXPERIENCES

Designer Gail McCleese makes her mark on the hospitality industry in Houston.

Gail McCleese sits in a curvy booth at Annabelle Brasserie, watching other diners experience the setting she helped create: a ceiling dripping with colorful faux florals and French country style using materials so plush you want to reach out and stroke them.

“Biophilia is important to me. I like to bring in nature or the sense of a garden since we’re stuck inside so much.” –  Gail McCleese

“Biophilia is important to me. I like to bring in nature or the sense of a garden since we’re stuck inside so much,” she said. “I’m inspired by nature and cultured travel. I love France, especially Marseilles, but I also like Italy, Ireland and Spain.”

Gail, who has spent nearly four decades creating beautiful interiors at high-end hotels and restaurants, will be the November honoree for the Houston Design District’s Leaders In Design program.

An Ohio native who moved to the Houston area in 1981 with her then-husband, Gail studied interior design at the Art Institute of Houston before building her own nationally-recognized hospitality design firm. She worked at Gensler for a handful of years, then in 2019 opened her boutique

practice, Sensitori, named for her sensory-oriented design ethos.

In Houston, some of her most high-profile projects have included Tilman Fertitta’s Post Oak Hotel, which this fall received a Michelin “key” (the equivalent of a restaurant “star”) along with nine projects she’s worked on with Berg Hospitality, including Annabelle Brasserie, Buttermilk Baby and Turner’s Cut. She’s currently working with Randall and Natalie Davis on the London House high-rise at San Felipe and Shepherd.

While her more than 100 hotel and restaurant projects range in décor and are full of color, Gail describes her own home as a “modern white envelope” filled with modern furniture brands such as Giorgetti and Minotti and colorful art and accessories.

WE ARE SHINING A SPOTLIGHT ON PEOPLE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

"Dreams of the Heart" by Marthann Masterson

Marthann Masterson

Contemporary Artist

Marthann Masterson is a native Houstonian now in her third career as an artist. She still speaks fondly of her first two professions as a chef and television personality, but it is her richly layered drip paintings, which are regularly commissioned by private patrons and local venues, that fuel her passion these days.

Marthann expresses immense gratitude for her life—one she never thought possible. Early in her career as a caterer for celebrities and politicians, she struggled with alcohol, and although her journey to sobriety was difficult, it transformed her life. Embracing sobriety helped her realize the importance of reducing anxiety and living with purpose. She once thought she wouldn’t make it past 41, as her parents passed away young, but now she is sober and thriving.

She is blessed with a wonderful marriage and is also deeply thankful for her family. Her son, his wife, and their three children have been a great source of pride. Her grandchildren are remarkable—one is working in New York, another in Dallas, and one locally. According to Marthann, they are being raised by incredible parents, something she deeply appreciates.

Marthann’s art career has also been a blessing. A mentor helped her discover her

passion for abstract painting, guiding her in techniques that now define her work. His influence was a gift, and she has been able to create art that brings joy to others.

“I cherish my dogs, my sense of humor, and the warmth I feel toward others. These elements bring joy into my daily life, whether in the studio or with my family,” says Marthann. “Despite a difficult start, I’m profoundly grateful for the life I live now.”

Marthann’s work is available locally at the Jack Meier Gallery and in Cabo San Lucas at the Pez Gordo Gallery. marthannmasterson.com

Dr. Yvonne Jenkins, co-owner and optometrist with Today’s Vision River Oaks, has been part of a mission trip called Sending Out Servants since 2018. This annual vision mission takes place in the remote town of Joyabaj, Guatemala, located about five and a half hours from Guatemala City. Along with a team of volunteers, she provides eye exams, glasses, and treatments for eye diseases like cataracts and glaucoma to the Mayan community. The team also performs surgeries and offers medical screenings for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, which are prevalent in the area.

Dr. Yvonne Jenkins

Co-Owner, Today’s Vision River Oaks

During the trip, Dr. Jenkins and fellow volunteers examine up to 800 patients in a week, assisted by ophthalmic assistants, nurses, and volunteers. The language barrier adds another layer of complexity, as the local people primarily speak a dialect called K’iche’. The team relies on trilingual translators to bridge the communication gap from English to Spanish and K’iche’.

Dr. Jenkins has always wanted to do meaningful work. After building her practice in Cypress and raising her children, the timing aligned in 2017 when she ended a business partnership. A conversation with an old colleague, who had already been part of the mission, inspired her to join, and she agreed immediately. Her motivation stems from a desire to help and empower others. Reflecting on her career, she notes that participating in the mission trip re-energized her passion for her work. The experience reminds her daily of the importance of gratitude, something she practices regularly. todaysvisionriveroaks.com

Hope Biosciences Research Foundation

Gordon Bethune and Jessica Rossman

Hope Biosciences Research Foundation (HBRF) hosted its Inaugural Gala on October 26 at the Post Oak Hotel in Uptown Houston. The evening celebrated groundbreaking research, transformative partnerships, and the lives changed through the foundation’s pioneering work in regenerative medicine. Proceeds from the event supported HBRF’s ongoing research and FDA-authorized clinical trials, focusing on adult cell therapy to treat chronic, “incurable” conditions such as Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and lupus.

Jessica Rossman and Gordon Bethune, both passionate supporters of HBRF, co-chaired the gala. For Rossman, a native Houstonian, the event was personal. “This is more than just another cause,” she explained. “HBRF is leading cutting-edge healthcare right here in Houston, and it’s making a real difference in people’s lives. We want others to experience the hope we’ve felt through their work.”

Bethune’s connection to HBRF began as a patient. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, he sought out the foundation’s innovative therapies as an alternative to conventional treatments. “I didn’t want to be reliant on medications and lose my quality of life,” he shared. Over time, Bethune became a “Visionary Sponsor” and now serves as a dedicated board member. “It’s been a privilege to help HBRF further their research and expand

their reach. They genuinely care about people, and that’s why I’m so committed.”

One of the highlights of the evening was the spotlight on HBRF’s Compassionate Use program, the largest of its kind globally, which provides regenerative therapies to patients ineligible for traditional clinical trials. “Philanthropy plays a crucial role in making these treatments accessible,” said Rossman. “HBRF offers these therapies at no cost, ensuring that even underserved populations can participate in groundbreaking research.”

Bethune echoed her sentiment, adding, “Supporting HBRF means helping others receive the care that’s helped me. It’s about giving back and ensuring this vital work continues.” www.hopebio.org

IF YOU DRINK ONE THING

Warm up with a delicious handcrafted hot toddy at Coltivare in the Heights.

Crafted by Beverage Director Morgan Weber, the Cherry Bounce Hot Toddy, available on Coltivare’s winter menu, is a sweet and spicy warm beverage inspired by combining a traditional hot toddy with cherry bounce. Cherry bounce is a cherry-infused bourbon liqueur popular in North Carolina, where Executive Chef and Co-Owner Ryan Pera grew up.

THE LIQUEUR

The foundation of this winery cocktail is cherry bounce liqueur, which is made from fresh cherries, white sugar, and bourbon. It is infused from September until December when it is ready to be used in the cocktail.

THE CINNAMON SYRUP

The cocktail blends cherry bounce liqueur with lemon juice, hot water, and a house-made cinnamon syrup. The cinnamon syrup is made by combining sugar, water, cinnamon, and Angostura bitters, creating a complex taste profile of sweet, citrusy, and spicy flavors.

THE GARNISH

To top it off, the cocktail is garnished with cinnamon, rosemary, and a cherry and orange peel skewer for the fresh taste and smell of fall. agricolehospitality.com/coltivare

Prenuvo, the company pioneering proactive wholebody imaging for the early detection of cancer and other diseases, recently opened in River Oaks.

PRENUVO RECENTLY OPENED IN HOUSTON AND PROVIDES POTENTIALLY LIFE-SAVING EARLY DETECTION OF OVER 500 CONDITIONS.

From Vision to View

Prenuvo, a pioneer in whole-body imaging, recently opened its first location in River Oaks. The new clinic provides Houstonians easy access to scans that detect over 500 conditions, including most solid tumors, which can be detected as early as stage 1, aneurysms, cysts, and more.

We sat down with Dr. Daniel J. Durand, Prenuvo's Chief Medical Officer, to discuss scans and what Houston clients can expect from a Prenuvo experience.

WHAT TYPES OF CLIENTS DO YOU SEE AT PRENUVO?

Patients seek Prenuvo scans for two primary reasons. The first group consists of individuals who are generally healthy and want to take a proactive approach to monitor their health to stay ahead of potential health issues before they worsen. The second group includes patients with more specific concerns, such as a family history of cancer, dementia, or other serious conditions. Prenuvo's full-body scans offer early detection of asymptomatic conditions like cancer or aneurysms.

CAN PRENUVO DETECT DEMENTIA?

Prenuvo can detect early signs of dementia through MRI scans that show brain volume loss or white matter disease. White matter disease can be associated with multiple conditions, including dementia. While the scans may indicate early dementia signs, further evaluation by a specialist, such as a neurologist, is required for a definitive diagnosis.

HOW DO YOU ADDRESS CONCERNS ABOUT FULL-BODY SCANS AND FALSE POSITIVES?

The issue of false positives from scans is complex, and opinions vary in the medical field. Prenuvo acknowledges that screening, in general, can be a divisive topic, with experts often disagreeing on recommendations. However, Prenuvo emphasizes that its goal is to provide solutions to help people proactively manage their health, particularly with early detection of conditions like cancer.

The company believes that early screening can ultimately save lives despite concerns about false positives.

WHAT WILL SOMEONE EXPERIENCE WHEN THEY SCHEDULE A SCAN WITH PRENUVO?

Patients can book online, be referred, or call directly. Afterward, they receive information about what the scan can and cannot detect, followed by completing a medical intake form. A nurse practitioner reviews this to ensure the scan is suitable.

On scan day, patients complete an MRI safety questionnaire to confirm there's no risk of metal interference. They change into scrubs in a private room and enter the MRI suite, where a technologist explains the process. The scan is done using a 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner, developed with 18 years of refinement. It lasts around 40 minutes, and patients can listen to music or watch Netflix during the procedure through a unique mirror system. Results are delivered via an app within 3-5 business days, with options for consultations if needed.

WILL THE COST OF PRENUVO AND SIMILAR SERVICES COME DOWN?

Prenuvo aims to lower the cost of its services in the future. To achieve this, Prenuvo would need to improve scanning efficiency or increase the volume of scans. Expanding to more centers could allow it to spread out fixed costs and lower prices for patients.

Though the current cost is an out-of-pocket expense, it is relatively affordable when compared to similar services covered by insurance. A single MRI scan for a specific body part in the U.S. can cost more than $2,500, whereas Prenuvo offers comprehensive scans at a transparent, published price. Patients can also use FSA or HSA accounts to cover the cost. While some prefer insurance-covered scans, Prenuvo's transparent pricing ensures patients know precisely what they're paying for and receive a valuable, high-quality service. prenuvo.com

“Prenuvo emphasizes that its goal is to provide solutions to help people proactively manage their health.”

THE ABC'S OF FINANCIAL PLANNING

Christyna S. Lewis offers advice to achieve a high quality of life after retirement while meeting today’s financial needs.

WHY DO YOU RECOMMEND A FINANCIAL PLAN?

People need money for basic needs. As a society, we live longer, making it essential to have a plan to ensure that we have a high quality of life beyond our working age.

WHAT WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A FINANCIAL ADVISOR?

Looking back on my career, I realize that everything has led me to become an Edward Jones financial advisor. I have a degree in International Finance and have passionately educated people on financial literacy. My focus has been on giving people peace of mind, empowering them, and helping them define and align with their financial objectives.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO HELP PEOPLE WITH THEIR FINANCIAL PLANS?

I can color with all the crayons in the big Crayola box to tailor strategies to meet my clients' objectives. Edward Jones is a Fortune 500 company with top financial analysts and is the largest stakeholder of mutual funds for our clients. The company focuses on the community, which aligns with my values. By creating personalized client advice, I am improving the financial wellness of our community.

WHY SHOULD PEOPLE WORK WITH A FINANCIAL ADVISOR?

A financial study shows that people who work with a financial advisor have 3% better annualized returns than people who do not.

HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF FROM OTHER FINANCIAL ADVISORS?

I have spent over 20 years in Houston and have been highly involved in various communities. My goal is to work with entrepreneurs, families, and organizations to handle their money so they can thrive in their businesses and daily lives. I also learn how my clients make decisions about money so I can guide them to a plan that works for their needs.

HOW DO YOU BEGIN WORKING WITH A NEW CLIENT?

I take a structured approach. I'll ask my clients questions about their finances and objectives in this deep-dive conversation.

These goals might include college, retirement, a once-in-a-lifetime trip, etc. I focus on their purpose and the values that are unique to them. I also work to understand what time frame we are working with and their risk tolerance when it comes to investing. Once I have that wealth of knowledge, I can strategically create their tailored investment plans and present them with choices for them to select. My goal is to act as their guide in the process.

WHAT CAN CLIENTS DO IF THEIR FINANCIAL GOALS CHANGE?

This happens frequently. My clients understand that their financial plan is a living strategy. I meet with them frequently to review the plan's performance against their current goals and see if changes are needed.

HOW CAN READERS GET STARTED ON A FINANCIAL PLAN TODAY IF THEY DON'T HAVE ONE?

Start at any time. First, educate yourself on your finances. Secondly, define what is important to accomplish. Be curious about how you interact with money. Try to spend less than you make because having more money gives you better options. Finally, find a financial advisor with the knowledge and empathy to meet your goals.

STRENGTHENING TEXAS TIES WITH NEW BOURBON LINE

On the big screen, Cole Hauser is best known for his role as bad boy cowboy Rip Wheeler on the hit Western drama, Yellowstone The show follows the turbulent saga of the Dutton family ranching empire as they defend their way of life at all costs, with Cole’s character often leading the charge. But off screen, Cole is more than an actor. He’s a coffee and bourbon connoisseur who is expanding his rugged brand into Texas. Recently, he’s helped launch a new bourbon whiskey that pays homage to generations of working cowboys.

Dubbed Lazy K Bar, the award-winning straight bourbon whiskey once available only in Montana, the setting for Yellowstone, is now available to Texas whiskey lovers and fans of the show.

“There's a big bourbon culture here,” Cole said. “We appreciate that, love it and look forward to sharing our bourbon with Texas.”

Lazy K Bar draws its name from the Lazy K Bar Ranch in Montana, one of the oldest cattle ranches in the state. The whiskey is a partnership between Cole, David Leuschen, owner of Lazy K Bar Ranch in Montana, and Britt West, a 25-year beverage industry veteran and VP of Spirits at Gallo. Bourbon lovers can now pick up a bottle of Lazy K Bar Whiskey in select Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Foods and other retailers across Texas.

Lazy K Bar is aged at least eight years in Kentucky inside charred new oak barrels to create a complex, memorable flavor. At 92 proof, it’s an incredibly smooth mix of caramel, toffee and aged honey. Each sip is a sweet balance of malted grain and sweet spices that warms the body. Cole calls it “perfection” saying his favorite way to enjoy Lazy K Bar is neat, without mixers or additions.

“I like a smooth, easy finish,” Cole said. “One that doesn't kick you in the mouth. This one, really, I think we knocked it out of the park.”

CONTINUED >

COLE HAUSER’S MONTANA-BASED LAZY K BAR WHISKEY IS NOW AVAILABLE IN THE LONE STAR STATE.
Lazy K Bar Whiskey, a sought after bourbon is now available in fine retailers across Texas.

Lazy K Bar is Cole’s second business foray into the beverage market in Texas. His first being Free Rein Coffee, a collaboration between several entrepreneurs and longtime San Angelo coffee roasters. Free Rein supports military charities and offers discounts to first responders, military, teachers and medical providers.

While Cole is most known for his Yellowstone role, Hollywood is in his blood. His great-grandfather was Harry Warner, one of the founders of Warner Brothers Studios. Two of his grandfathers were writers, his father, Wings Hauser, was an actor and his mother, Cass Warner, was the founder of the Warner Sisters production company. Cole has starred in dozens of films including Dazed and Confused, Good Will Hunting and, The Ritual Killer. He’s married to former actress Cynthia Daniel, his wife of 25 years, who starred in the 1990s teen drama Sweet Valley High. Together they have three children who can at times be seen together in Cole’s social media feeds.

Aside from sharing his coffee and bourbon, Cole says he enjoys spending time in Texas filming, visiting friends and family. His son attends Texas Christian University and, last year Cole appeared at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to visit with fans. The Yellowstone universe, which was created by Texas native Taylor Sheridan, has often used Texas as the backdrop for its storyline to unfold.

“Texas has been kind of a second home,” Cole said. “I get along well with your values and your beliefs down here.”

With the final episodes of Yellowstone premiering next month, it’s a fitting time to pick up a bottle of Lazy K Bar, settle in with a glass and enjoy the show. Cole laughed at the idea and suggested fans might need more than a glass.

“I hope they drink the whole season with Lazy K Bar,” he said. “You know, it's an emotional season and they might need a little bourbon.”

The final episodes of Yellowstone will air on Paramount Network on November 10, 2024 at 7PM.
