What might we keep in the cedar closet time capsule as representative from this decade which so far has been marked by a global pandemic necessitat ing Zoom meetings, sweats and face masks? Maybe, the best is yet to come. I think we can all agree that it will feel good to lose the loungewear and get dressed up, make plans and go places in style again! Our issue seeks to celebrate this glorious re-entry in the Identity Fashion spread. Of course, style is more than what we wear. It is how we present ourselves to the world; how we make visitors feel in our homes, in our stores and in our hometown; how we make everyone from tourists to The King feel in their clothes—which is something Julie Lansky intimately recounts for us. Inside this issue we showcase stylish interior spaces—both residential and commercial—that speak to the unique style of their inhabitants. We even peek into the Dixon Gallery's timeless interior where we can find the exhi bition Sporting Fashion: Outdoor Girls through October 16th.
In the magazine world, September is known as the fashion and style issue, and while cooler temps are still on the distant horizon, we are ambitiously on-trend here in the River City. Raising two very opinionated fashionistas (actually, three if you count my particular son), most days I feel like Joan and Melissa Rivers are in my closet in all their honest glory, so I really appreciate a carefully edited closet which can be achieved with a little help from the experts we have enlisted in our Closet Coup d'état article. Styles are fluid, and the fashion gods continually bring us a fresh new take on something from generations past or create an entirely new concept. Each decade has its own unique trends, and some, like it or not, cycle back decades later (ahem Birkenstocks, neon, high waists! and Dr. Marten’s).
As I write this, like many of you, I am preparing my children and myself for a new school year (uniforms, hallelujah!) complete with fresh kicks, haircuts and school supplies and fresh chances to infuse our own style into everything we do. In the wise words of Coco Chanel, “Fashion changes, but style endures.” Staying true to yourself is always in vogue. So, bring on fall in your own best style, and remember, you're never fully dressed without a smile.

Building the Dixon’s Permanent Collection
MUST SEE | ENTERTAINMENT ARTICLE BY JEANNIE TABOR PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH BELL, SÉLAVIE PHOTOGRAPHY
The Dixon Gallery and Gardens is a true gem in the heart of Memphis. It boasts 17 acres of beautiful trees, plants and flowers that all Memphians and visitors to the city are invited to walk through and enjoy. The Dixon hosts ever-changing exhibitions, tours, programs and events throughout the year. And set against this backdrop of dynamic horticulture and programming is a per manent collection of more than 2,000 pieces of art.
Founded in 2016, the mission of this magnanimous group is to

One Gem at a Time
The Dixon’s permanent collection has grown in recent years because of the involvement of the Dixon’s Curator’s Circle.

The primary objective of the Curator’s Circle is to acquire one significant piece each year, and the group focuses on finding works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries that are missing from the Dixon’s permanent collection.
20
Charles Courtney Curran’s Evening Illuminations at the Paris Exposition
Julie adds that she is most proud of the group’s first purchase, Charles Courtney Curran’s Evening Illuminations at the Paris Exposition . “Buying Curran’s painting, in which visitors to the 1889 Paris World’s Fair are looking into a bright new future, was really an apt choice because the Curator’s Circle really launched the Dixon into a new era for our collection.”
Julie adds, “When you look at all the works of art that the Curator’s Circle has purchased, and think that just a few years ago, these objects were scattered all over the world in private collections and galleries and that they are now hanging on the walls of a museum that is free and welcoming to its community, it gives you a great sense of pride!”
Anne Keeney, a founding member of the Curator’s Circle, discusses its origin: a legacy of her father, Joe Orgill. “My father was a true believer in building the permanent collection of the Dixon. He was, in fact, the first member of the Curator’s Circle. The first year we had 37 members and we were thrilled. Over the next 12 months, my father enlisted the help of friends, and we grew the mem bership to 107 members by the next year.”
The Curator’s Circle is open to anyone with an interest in seeing the Dixon continue to grow and thrive. Most of the members live in Memphis, but several hail from other states and attend the annual dinner during which the new art is selected.

build interest and support in collection-build ing for the Dixon. “The Dixon has always had an amazing permanent collection, rooted in French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, but we had gotten out of the habit of building and strengthening that collection,” according to Julie Pierotti, the Dixon’s Martha R. Robinson Curator.
“Every dinner is special, but one in particular stands out,” Anne says. “As a rule, my favorite painting does not win. 2018, was no different. My favorite painting, by Henry O. Tanner of Notre Dame in a rainstorm, came in 2nd. I figured that I would never see it again, but then an anonymous donor acquired the painting for the museum in memory of my father. It was one of the happiest moments of my life.”

Closet Coup D’état Early fall edits with stylists Amy Birdsong Golden, Cara Grinder and Kimberly Newsom FASHION FORWARD | STYLE + BEAUTY24
Amy: For ladies, a platform loafer and a transitional boot. Platform loafers, even a mule or Mary Jane shape, go with jeans, skirts and dresses. Wear boots a bit above the ankle or mid-shin with short sets, midi skirts, dresses or under cropped pants while it’s still warm. For men, add a sneaker in an interesting color combo. Consider custom Nikes and Vans.
Kimberly: I love a “Blanche Deveraux” mule. Mules are wardrobe staples. They are ver satile, and you can wear them all year if styled properly. I’m not a fan of a heel under four inches, but I've seen a few shorter-heeled cuties in stores.
FALL 2022 PRIORITIES AND TRENDS THAT WILL BE GONE IN A FLASH
Amy: You are always on trend if your clothes fit and are tailored to you. A big part of my service is taking clients for custom alterations. It should be gone in a flash if it doesn't work for your personal style.
For ladies, I am inspired by menswear with femi nine details, color play and interesting necklines. For men, a goal should be expanding those usual colors and patterns in your wardrobe and elevating basics.
Cara: Chunkier shoes are in vogue. I love the lug soles on this season’s boots. Platforms (of a rea sonable height) in many different shoe styles from sneakers to preppy loafers are a nice way to balance out wider-leg pants and denim this season.
CONTINUED > 25| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/RIVERCITYSEPTEMBER 2022
TRENDS THAT MERIT OUR ATTENTION IN SHOES
Kimberly: Layering transitional pieces carries us into fall. Beautiful, flowing kimonos are in style and ideal. Kimonos are transitional, staple pieces that every fashionista should have in her wardrobe.
Skinny jeans on men are trending but will be a wrap soon. Few men have the body type for, or even want to wear, skintight pants and jeans.
ARTICLE BY CHRISTIAN OWEN
Cara: For early fall, wear a matching print or sol ids in both a top and skirt, especially when temps haven’t cooled down! Then pair with boots and an on-trend leather jacket or blazer for chilly fall mornings and nights. Hemlines are shifting, so one fall trend that I would not invest in is the structured maxi skirt. Think fulllength, five-pocket denim skirts. I find this trend tricky to wear and not particularly flattering.
Amy: For everyday, a classic hoop in updated colors, textures and shapes. For an occasion, I am working on a statement piece for a client, a custom gold choker with semi-precious stones in colors that pop! Belts update voluminous pieces. Look for colors, wovens, buckles that wow, and studs. A new favorite is a bright eggplant leather, trimmed in silver – like jewelry for your waist. For men, colored skins and wovens. If you are wearing the same belt style since college – let’s update.
– not necessarily get RID – but REPAIR. Clean, shine and repair tips and heels. For men, your T-shirt collection in the hun dreds. Pare it down.
Amy: Mothers, get rid of maternity clothes when you enter a different ‘season.’ Shoes
Kimberly: Big, bold, gold statement ear rings! To add to the earth tones we antici pate, I’m ready to accessorize clients’ looks with polished yet fun accessories such as bold, conversational bracelets, cuffs with funky designs and whimsical bangles.
ACCESSORIES THAT SAY, “IT’S FALL 2022!”
TO KEEP OR NOT TO KEEP IN OUR WARDROBES
Cara: Shades of brown from Swiss coffee to rusty Sienna are returning to the fall scene. An all-neutral look is always classic, but don’t be afraid to add color, like a hot pink accessory, to your ensemble.
FASHION FORWARD | STYLE + BEAUTY26
Kimberly: Cheerful yellows, lava reds, shades of plum, and neutral earth tones in beautiful greens, browns and oranges
“Go big or go home will be my motto when purchasing fall jewelry—larger diameter hoops in mixed metals adorned with colorful gems and in interesting nontraditional shapes. "
Kimberly: Part with pieces that no longer fit! Keep black blazers, a little black dress, at least three crispy white button-down shirts, and one has to be a custom shirt. I encourage everyone to invest in a custom garment made specifically for you. If you would like to continue a conver sation about your wardrobe with Amy, Cara or Kimberly, send a direct message on Instagram to Amy @birdsonggolden, Cara @stylespeakmemphis or Kimberly @k.newsomstyle.
FRESH COLORS AND COLOR COMBOS THIS FALL
Amy: Citrine, lilac, magenta, olive - with rust as an unexpected combo
Cara: Clothes should encourage confi dence by flattering the figure and feeling good. No matter the season or trend, ill-fit ting, uncomfortable or damaged clothes and accessories are unfashionable.
Cara: Statement jewelry! Go big or go home will be my motto when purchasing fall jewelry—larger diameter hoops in mixed metals adorned with colorful gems and in interesting nontraditional shapes. Ornate necklaces in shorter lengths that graze the collar bone or are choker length can be a fun departure from the tried-andtrue simple gold chain necklace.

EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FASHION STYLE? Classic with a little edge, thoughtful incorpo ration of fun/colorful pieces, avoidance of heavy trends. Comfortable, while still polished. WOULD YOU SAY THAT YOUR INVOLVEMENT IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN WORLD HAS INFORMED YOUR WARDROBE? Absolutely! With both design and fashion, I believe in investing in well-made, foundational pieces, like a high-quality sofa with a timeless silhouette or a clas sic leather jacket. I believe both design and fashion are forms of art, and I look for those artistic, detailed touches in both. I avoid “fast fashion,” just like I avoid trendy, throw-away home décor. I do not believe in always making the “safe” choice when buying a more expensive piece of clothing or furniture. If you really love something, go for it!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OVERALL DESIGN AESTHETIC?

WHAT DESIGN FEATURES ARE YOU SPECIFI CALLY DRAWN TO?
I love all color but tend to lean towards more rich, saturated colors, as well as earthy tones that have great depth. I love to mix wood types, metal finishes, ceramic, glass and a variety of fabrics in a space. I strive to vary the textures of fabrics as well—like upholster ing a velvet chair with a leather contrast welt. I love pattern mixing and will often combine a structured pattern like a stripe or check with something more organic, such as a watercolor floral pattern. If a fabric has a really interesting pattern with incredible colors, it can inspire the design of an entire Accessorizingroom! a space is a great way to work in vin tage and antique items, as well as personal touches. I will always buy vintage books, glassware, brass items and oddities to have on hand. I have a storage unit full of them yet can never seem to have enough! They help bring interest to a room and contribute to the origi nal, personalized, layered feeling I want every room we design to have. I strongly believe that art is critical to the success of the design of a room. I lean towards large-scale, original art, and I like to mix a variety of styles and mediums in a space. I also believe in the importance of thoughtful, quality art framing.
Classic mixed with modern, polished yet approach able, thoughtful use of color, pattern, and texture, and careful attention to detail. Incorporation of vintage/antique items and original art.

Our calendars are overflowing with engaging itineraries and festive outings once again. In response, we worked with Memphis’ most distinctive, fashion-forward boutiques and jewelry experts to present a collection of clothing and accessories that combats a current dilemma we all share –post-lockdown, lackluster wardrobes.
Lockdowns whittled away at the relevance of self-expres sion in our wardrobes as panache and personality gave way to an overabundance of generic athleisure. It is time to shelve the sweats and make a statement. Everyone has places to go again, and local retailers are bringing creative solutions to your closet this September. Playing with proportion, the best looks for the season are pretty and polished. Heading into the cooler tem peratures, embrace new lengths, intense color and state ment-making accessories for your parties and pastimes. Hemlines are long and sexy. Jackets are voluminous and textured. Gowns are sexy as ever, and a cowboy boot is always a good idea.

“When I was younger, I was so timid. I used to be unable to even tell a shoe salesperson my size.” Being exposed to retail changed that. “Everything we do is about customer service. And that includes lots of eye contact,” she laughs. Julie swiftly moves between the four locations in The Peabody lobby. She checks on the new logo’d material in the Memphis Pop-Up. They designed Memphis wares, the latest with an electric guitar as the “i” in Memphis. The teenagers and college kids love the Memphis x Champion sweatshirts. Next stop: to ensure that duck umbrellas are restocked in the gift shop, Lansky’s Gifts at The Peabody. “If there is a duck, I will find it,” she shares about their trips to market. “It’s all on theme.” The bright store is full of joy inducing ducks: Vietri pottery, vintage duck decoys, Christopher Radko ornaments, kid’s t-shirts, Dinstuhl's chocolates, toys and loads more. Not just for tourists, it’s a must hit for holiday and gift shopping. Walking to their women’s store, Lansky 126 for Her, Julie explains her approach. “We are not traditional retail but retail tourism. I want the Memphis local to feel like she is shopping out of town. And the tourist to find something unique. And of course, some staples in case she lost luggage.” You’ll find colorful prints from the Spanish line Vilagallo, music tees by Recycled Karma, hats by Wyeth, statement leather and basics like Frame denim, ON Running and Vuori. There is a nod to Elvis fans, with sequin t-shirts, from their collaboration with Queen of Sparkles. Part museum/part retail, Lansky at The Peabody Men’s Shop, is the men’s store that started the family affair. It’s where noted musicians like Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis were shopping in the 50s and 60s. Their most famous client is
SECOND AND THIRD GENERATION
Julie Lansky sets her watch by ducks. Specifically, when the ducks march. The Peabody ducks visit the lobby of the hotel each day between the hours of 11:00 am and 5:00 pm. Visitors soon flock to one of the four retail stores her family owns and runs – collectively known as Lansky Brothers or just Lanksy’s if you know the story.
LANSKY
Originally opened by her grandfather as an army surplus and uniform store in 1946, Bernard Lansky’s store filled a gap in the Memphis market. Most men’s fashion at the time was traditional and clean-cut. He instead brought high fashion, glitz, glamour and “stage style.” Bernard was dressing musi cians like Duke Ellington before he met Elvis. At his shop on Beale, his vision for Elvis created fashion that shaped history. Today, the father and daughter team, Hal and Julie Lansky, are continuing his legacy as second and third generation owners. After graduating college at University of Colorado at Boulder, Julie had plans to move to Chicago and work in advertising. But during a summer spent working at Lansky’s, she remarked to her father about their company website. “It was a simple flash page. We spent so much time cultivating relationships with our out-of-town customers. You may never see them again. I felt like we were missing business.” She was charged with rebranding their online presence, and it turned into her full-time career. “I knew nothing about websites,” she admits. “But I learned.”

The movie is already garnering Oscar talk with critical acclaim and box office success. Julie points out a blue sweater that Elvis wore in Jailhouse Rock “Both men and women wear it.” Blue suede shoes embroidered with TCB are next to guitars signed by Lansky fans like Tom Petty and Robert Plant. Not everything is rock and roll style. They also carry European lines like 7 Downie St. and Meyer, along with American sportswear lines like Johnnie-O and Greyson.
So, what’s it like to work with your dad every day? “My dad has always joked about family businesses. First generation makes it. Second generation maintains it. Third generation either screws it up or cashes out,” she laughs.
Julie is continuing the legacy of being an “exporter of Memphis” of our city’s place in history, culture and fashion.
“We have been around for 76 years. The way I see it, we’ve had success because we have changed with the times. And every decade really tells a story,” says Julie.

Julie continues, “Of course, this is a family business, but I try to approach it with an entrepreneurial spirit, like my grandfather and father did. I have such respect for our history but also our customers and community.”
Julie recalls their visit in 2019, before filming began. “They wanted to get the details right, down to the nuances of his collars. How did he get dressed? Why did he wear his belt buckles to the side and button only the bottom of his jackets?” She explains that Elvis started wearing his belts to the side to mirror car mechanics. And the buttons on the jackets? It was so he could dance better on stage. Their family had insight to it all, even the iconic pink and black suit that Bernard Lansky selected for Elvis’ appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Julie explains, “Back then, men did not wear pink. But Elvis was determined to stand out.”
Hal says of working with daughter Julie, “We’re having fun with what we’re doing. And now I know what my dad felt like working with me. I am proud to work with Julie- it's a real privilege. Plus we get to have lunch together every day.”
The Lansky Brothers stores at The Peabody Hotel are open Sunday – Thursday, 9am – 6pm and Friday and Saturday, 9am – 7pm.
Hal and Julie's children's book tells about the relationship Bernard Lansky had with Elvis.

Its secure, central location and complete range of care options make it a desirable choice for many families. We recently got a peek inside the beautifully appointed terrace apartment of Dorothy Stevenson in The Place, the newest addition to the sprawling campus that includes independent and assisted living, memory care and Health and Rehabilitation—not to mention the salon, fitness and aquatics, art studio and resident gardens to name a few amenities offered to residents. Dorothy, an Arkansas native, relocated to the River City two years ago following the loss of her husband. After much deliberation, she decided to downsize and head east to be near her family. She recalls finally getting settled in just days before the lockdown of 2020 and feeling so very fortunate that, despite losing her beloved, she had gained a community.
OPEN HOUSE | HOME + DESIGN52
Many of Dorothy's furnishings, including the vast collection of Western art amassed during travels, translated into her new home. She then carefully layered in new pieces with the help of equally stylish friends and family. The 1,700-square-foot apartment with a charming terrace is a modern yet comfortable menagerie of collected and carefully arranged mementos from a life that is very much still thriving. In fact, we were lucky to catch up with Dorothy before football season. The proud Razorback season ticket holder who still attends several home games had just returned from hosting her entire family of 17 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where the ages ranged from 13 to we'll never tell.

Kittie Kyle can help you master transitional dressing. Because what season is it anyway? Drawing on the menswear trend, we love the knits they have selected. They are delicate enough to go over a tank dress or pair with a long floral skirt. Consider these bright colors a neutral. The perfect layer for the start of cool, fall nights. We are also circling their new shipment of Stine Goya, Chufy and Xirena fall pieces. 432 South Grove Park Road

Work with Grace Byeitima of Mbabazi House of Style to select one of her beautiful long wrap skirts made from traditional African fabrics. Grace’s fair-trade business has a design studio in Uganda and a storefront on Broad Avenue. A belt has the power to change any outfit. 20twelve owner, Chantal Johnson, has stocked some of the best accessories to update your wardrobe. Texture, color and metallic details— because belts aren’t just for pants. Cinch in a tent dress to achieve a more tailored look for fall. Elevate a more casual floral dress with a colorful leather. Wrap over a cardigan for an updated office look. The jewel box store has our favorite emerging designers. We are also eyeing autumn frocks by Silvia Tcherassi and La Double J. 6150 Poplar Avenue, Suite 113 It was a stylish mid-century fashion but rarely seen. When the lady of the house wasn’t in a rush to get anywhere or may have “taken to her room,” she often donned a bed jacket. Stovall Collection has brought them back. You don’t have to be convalescing. Scrolling through your phone or reading the latest fiction from Novel works just fine. The Helen bedjacket can go over any set of pajamas and immediately adds some comfort and polish. Add some custom notepads to your order to jot down to-do’s (it’s a working bedjacket!)
