Another year, another adventure (issue)

Welcome back to my favorite issue of the year, which is focused on exploring. Somehow, it seems quite fitting that I am writing my publisher's note from my seat at 35,000 feet on my way to our son's college graduation. Not exactly peak exploring, but a small adventure nonetheless.

We live in an amazing, expansive place. Amazing enough that the article we published last year, titled “Go Somewhere Nowhere,” got a tremendous number of “who knew?!” responses from our readers. This year, we decided to go a little deeper and focus on a small handful of easily accessible journeys and local activities that really resonated with our team. So, whether it’s a quick trip to a local dude ranch, a getaway to Montana, classical music in Tahoe, or a night out at Reno’s own White Rabbit Lounge, you can be sure there’s a little something for everyone. Also, I highly recommend the article about Sydney Martinez and her new book, which will open many eyes to a Nevada seldom seen.

I said it last year, and I’ll say it again. No matter what your taste for exploring looks like, get out there, find something new, and have some fun!

A Tale of Two Shows

The White Rabbit Theater brings dual magic to Reno

This spring, the White Rabbit Theater and Lounge emerged as a fresh beacon of wonder. Nestled within the Grand Sierra Resort, this 300-seat venue that once served as the downstairs movie theater, offers not one, but two distinct magic experiences, captivating audiences of all ages.

A MAGICAL DUO'S NEW CHAPTER

Kaileigh and Chase Hasty, internationally acclaimed husband-and-wife illusionists, have performed in over 57 countries. Their journey, which began six years ago on May 3 (coincidentally White Rabbit Theater’s grand opening date) during a levitation rehearsal on the island of Guam, has now found a home in Reno.

"Having our own theater to call home gives us the ability to really bring our vision to life and constantly build on making our show bigger and better," says Kaileigh. "As an added bonus, we have come to absolutely love Reno’s charm and beauty, and we feel incredibly supported by the community of people we have met since moving here.”

TWO SHOWS, ONE ENCHANTING VENUE

The White Rabbit Theater presents two unique performances: "That’s Magic!" and "Nocturnal."

"That’s Magic!" is a family-friendly show that runs nightly at 7 p.m. It combines

grand illusions, interactive segments, and a cast of featured dancers, ensuring entertainment for all audiences in an intimate venue.

For those seeking a more mature experience, "Nocturnal" takes the stage at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. This 18+ show features world-class illusions, beautiful dancers, adult humor, and plenty of surprises. "Lose your inhibitions as you step into the magical world of 'Nocturnal'," invites the theater's event description.

While there is some overlap between the two shows, the Hastys aim to make them entirely distinct experiences.

"We feel so lucky that we can create magic for everyone, whether it’s a family outing with the kids, date night, or just a whimsical night out with friends," says Chase.

CRAFTING MAGIC BEHIND THE SCENES

The theater itself is a testament to the duo's dedication. Designed with all the bells and whistles, the intimate setting allows audiences to get a close-up look at large stunts and magic. Remarkably, despite having a seven-person backstage crew, Chase cues everything live onstage from his pocket, without anyone seeing—a feat he considers one of his most impressive magic tricks.

A WARM WELCOME IN RENO

Since its opening, the White Rabbit Theater has received an overwhelmingly positive response from both locals and visitors. The beautiful space features a beautiful and opulent full bar with themed drinks and close-up magic. As you sip your Smoke and Mirrors whiskey drink, or your Houdini Martini, you can also enjoy elevated appetizers. And for those who want to munch on something as they’re dazzled during the show, popcorn, hot pretzels, candy, and more are available from the concession stand just outside the theater doors.

As Reno continues to evolve as a hub for diverse entertainment, the White Rabbit Theater stands out by offering dual experiences that cater to a broad audience. Whether you're seeking a magical evening with family or an adventurous night out, the White Rabbit invites you to step into a world where wonder awaits. And you may even see someone pull a rabbit out of their hat. THE WHITE RABBIT THEATER 2500 E. 2nd St. - inside Grand Sierra Resort, Reno Thewhiterabbittheater.com

FINDING NEVADA'S WILD

It's Sydney Martinez's mission to explore every nook and cranny of the Silver State

By foot, car, and sheer curiosity, one local woman is crisscrossing the rugged terrain of Nevada to uncover the stories hidden in its deserts, mountains, and other remote outposts. With a deep love for the Silver State, she’s turning those journeys into epic stories, and her work doesn’t just

“I’ve seen some of the most isolated terrain in the country," Sydney Martinez

map the land — it captures the heart of Nevada, one conversation and dusty road trip at a time.

Sydney Martinez spent her early years growing up in Colorado, but she came to the Truckee Meadows in the mid-1990s at the age of 10 when her family moved for her dad’s new job. She grew up exploring the region with her family and graduated from Reno’s Galena High School before majoring in journalism and photography at the University of Nevada, earning her degree in 2009.

Little did she know how much she’d fall in love with the region as an adult.

“I interned at Nevada Magazine and later worked there. I got to explore Nevada,” Martinez says. “I’ve become a consultant and locations expert for a lot

of different agencies. I’ve just got a lot of experience being boots on the ground and seeing places first-hand. Nevada became a huge part of my identity, and not the parts being marketed nationally, but ultra-rural Nevada.

“I’ve seen some of the most isolated terrain in the country. I’ve been driving off road and visited some amazing little Nevada-owned businesses and rural bars. There is amazing geology in our state. [Exploring the state] all became a quest of mine and I became addicted to this feeling that there’s something else out there.”

If there is something else out there in Nevada’s wilds, it’s hard to believe Martinez hasn’t found it. From the peaks of the Jarbidge Mountains in

northern Elko County down to Gold Butte National Monument south of Mesquite – and pretty much all points in between—Martinez has traversed them all.

“All of the states around us have iconic world-renowned landscapes and most people don’t think of Nevada,” the 38-year-old says. “Nevada deserves a second look. There’s something here that you can’t see right away… People think Nevada is empty, but there’s just as grand adventures out here as anywhere. For me, it’s about showing people, turning the lights on for people. Our public lands are the center of the Nevada experience. They’re what make the state so special. You can wonder what’s across the valley and then actually go there.

In other states, you can’t necessarily do that because they have so much private land.”

The countless conversations with Nevada natives and road trips to barren foothills and beyond left Martinez with an unmatched wealth of knowledge about the Silver State. Her brain has become a database for all things Nevada and she’s used her encyclopedic memory to write a book.

“Finding Nevada Wild – The Terrain, Culture and People of the Most Mysterious State in the West” is her latest professional adventure. The book is set for release on Aug. 25 at Barnes and Noble and Amazon among other literary vendors. It’s billed as a guide to “help readers to discover the true essence of the Silver State.”

Martinez has definitely discovered that essence. In fact, she’s probably driven 50 miles on a dirt road to soak it all in while smelling the dust kicked up from her vehicle, hearing the wind blow

through the adjacent remote canyon, and maybe even sitting in the natural hot springs that makes its home in whatever valley is close by.

The knowledge Martinez has amassed and the relationships she’s built are what make her colleagues marvel.

“Sydney’s understanding of Nevada is unique in its sheer depth,” says friend Fil Corbitt, who has worked on various projects with Martinez. “If you find yourself in some valley in the middle of the state, Sydney will not only have traveled each of its roads (paved and dirt), but she’ll also have a sense of what’s interesting there, how it connects to the valleys around it, and the cultural history of that place. Plus, she usually knows someone who lives there and what they’ve been up to. Yet even with all that knowledge and understanding, she’s still curious about the place and seems to find something new to check out.”

Corbitt wasn’t alone in his assessment. Mike Branch is a longtime colleague of Martinez, having written books on Nevada as well. He says she simply knows more about Nevada’s back country than nearly anyone else, adding that she’s got a ‘kid in the candy shop vibe’ to everything she does.

“Sydney’s passion for Nevada is palpable and infectious,” Branch says. “You see it in everything she does… You know that wonderful feeling you have when you meet somebody who is deeply enthusiastic about a band, filmmaker, or sports team that you love? That’s what it’s like to talk with Sydney about the Great Basin. I often say that to protect a place you have to fight for it… you have to have a passionate, trustworthy guide who can lead you into it. Sydney is that guide for many of us—a person whose knowledge of and devotion to Nevada helps us to open new worlds.”

Martinez’s website shares a name with her new book –FindingNevadaWild.com. On the site she shares stories of her adventures and folk tales she’s gathered from the state’s longtime residents. There are also links to her YouTube channel and her other love, Song Dog Silver. That’s her silversmithing business. It’s a skill she picked up, kind of by accident.

“I never really intended to start a business,” Martinez says. “I have a wide brimmed that I wear when I’m out. It’s become a part of my personality. I wanted a turquoise hat pin to go on my hat. I looked at lots of great shops but never could find

the right pin in any of them. So, I took a couple silver smithing classes and set out to make a pin for my hat. I posted it on Instagram and I had 1000s of DMs… I started making and selling pins and then people wanted necklaces and bolo ties and it was born into a business.”

The adventures she’s undertaken have been rewarding. They’ve shaped her personality and outlook for sure, but Martinez says she certainly didn’t stumble into this outdoorsy lifestyle. She stresses that her pilgrimages to tiny towns and little-known landmarks would never have happened without her husband Jonathon.

“I grew up exploring the region with my family,” Martinez says. “I spent a ton of time outside.  My dad spent a lot of time outdoors, but it was not until I met my husband, who is an expert in the outdoors, did I really get into it. I credit him for showing me the powers of the outdoors. He grew up an eagle scout. He knows how to build and fix anything, how to be anywhere and survive. He really took me to the next level and helped make me into what I’ve become.”

So, if you ever find yourself on a lonely Nevada backroad, with nothing but dust in your rearview and wonder on the horizon, chances are, Sydney Martinez has already been there. Still, you can bet she’s ecstatic that others are exploring the same distant twists and turns of Nevada’s soul that she’s spent her life pursuing.

HEY DUDE!

REVEL IN THE FAMILY SUMMER CAMP CHARM OF AN AUTHENTIC GUEST RANCH IN QUINCY

Western television may be responsible for the rise of cowboy core themed travel. Whether you fell in love with Rip Wheeler on “Yellowstone,” got sucked into its spinoff “1923,” or found yourself a fan of the book-to-screen adaptation of the Walt Longmire stories, it’s impossible to ignore that western culture has influenced modern travel. And what better way to dive into your own occidental fantasy land than to visit a dude ranch?

Set in California’s “Lost Sierras,” a quick 90-minute jaunt from Reno, Greenhorn Ranch in Quincy is perhaps the best place to make your cowboy dreams come true. Welcoming families since 1962, the authentic dude ranch is one of few experiences of its kind, and the closest to our hometown. With 608 sprawling acres, the premier guest ranch feels like family summer camp, championing activities such as archery, fly fishing, horseback riding, and more.

The property leans into ranch life where cell phone service is sparse but the good times aren’t. Packages include both pay-asyou-go stays and all-inclusive options that feature lodging, meals, and activities so you can spend your days booking back to back trail rides of various difficulty levels, learning how to fly fish in the property’s pond or further out on the Feather River, and perfecting your archery skills as you take aim at animal-shaped targets in the woods. Other adventure activities include skeet shooting, hatchet throwing, mountain biking, and leatherworking workshops.

Many of the premiere activities start with instruction from a knowledgeable and experienced guide while other activities, like lawn games, traditional fishing, and karaoke, are more guest-led. When you’re not booked into a specific event, you can spend your afternoon on the lawn playing volleyball, football, soccer, cornhole, or even doing arts and crafts. The centerpiece catch-andrelease pond is open with provided poles and lures. Perhaps the most majestic pastime is watching the daily running of the horses as they gallop from the main ranch to their nighttime accommodations.

CONTINUED >

Because the property is small, and much of the staff lives onsite or nearby often just for the season, even a weekend at Greenhorn Ranch will have you feeling like family. Every evening has its own scheduled activity such as karaoke, fireside stories, movie nights, or paint and sip, plus the saloon stays open for drinks and mingling. The fact that the staff participates and socializes with guests truly makes the experience. And if you don’t want to join in, there’s always pool tables, table tennis, and shuffleboard in the adjacent room, or board games in the main lodge.

Guests can choose between one of 12 main lodge rooms, 16 rustic cabins, or a refurbished airstream for their home away from home.  The bucolic accommodations open up to the expansive scenery, with miles upon miles of green hiking trails and a short wooden bridge extended over a babbling creek.

While food may seem like an afterthought on a vacation like this, the truth is it’s a highlight. Three times a day the dinner bell chimes and meals are spread out buffet style. The on-site chef makes gourmet burgers, tasty BBQ, grilled hot dogs, perfect pasta salad, and

more. Every day the menu changes and each meal is better than the last. Trust us when we say it’s some of the best food we’ve ever had.

The season runs May to October when the weather is warm and for many is a cherished family tradition. While newcomers discover the ranch, which once operated as a humble goat farm during the Gold Rush, every year, there’s also a slew of regulars that return time and time again to spend their summers in nostalgia with family and friends.

DISCOVER WHITEFISH

Tucked away in Northwest Montana, Whitefish is a charming small town with a population of fewer than 10,000 full time residents. Despite its size, it draws over a million visitors annually, captivated by worldclass skiing and the awe-inspiring beauty of Glacier National Park. Much like Reno, it’s a city experiencing massive growth and offering outdoor wonder year round. Though the town has evolved over the past decade, it remains untouched in the ways that

matter most, and perfect for both a summer escape and a fall retreat.

ADVENTURES IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

Glacier National Park is magnificent year-round. Some of the best views are found along the Going to the Sun Road, a 50-mile paved highway that runs east to west across the park. In spring its often open only to hikers and bikers as snowplows work tirelessly to

Your summer and fall escape to northwest Montana

prepare the road for summer, but the rest of the year the route opens to vehicle traffic, as well. Cycling from Avalanche Lake to Logan Pass is a breathtaking adventure as rides will often include bear sightings and other wildlife.

Looking to explore the park on foot? Popular options include Hidden Lake, Avalanche Lake, and the Highline Trail, each offering awe-inspiring vistas and unforgettable memories. For those wanting to enjoy the scenery without the added hassle of driving, consider a Red Bus Tour. These vintage 1930s buses with roll-back tops let you relax and take in the views while your guide shares fascinating insights about the park. Through Sept. 28, reservations are required for the West Entrance from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., available at recreation.gov, so be sure to plan accordingly.

how to get there

Just 11 miles from Whitefish, Glacier Park International Airport offers direct flights to 16 U.S. cities, served by seven major airlines. Additionally, Amtrak’s Empire Builder travels through Whitefish twice daily, linking Seattle and Chicago in style.

WHERE TO STAY

For first-time visitors, Downtown Whitefish makes an ideal base. The Firebrand Hotel offers convenient access to boutique shops, restaurants, theaters, and live music venues within walking distance. Seeking a lakeside retreat? The Lodge at Whitefish Lake provides direct water access and shuttle service into town, blending comfort with convenience.

WHITEFISH SKI RESORT

Whitefish Mountain Resort is your ticket to year-round adventure, even when you’re not running down lanes of fresh powder. With nearly 500,000 skier visits per season, it maintains a welcoming, local vibe. But its appeal extends into summer as the mountain transforms into an outdoor playground with mountain biking, alpine sliding, ziplining, ropes courses, hiking, and even huckleberry picking. Expert tip: bring bear spray!

ARTS & CULTURE

Despite its small size, Whitefish boasts a vibrant arts scene. Local venues regularly feature live performances by talented musicians like Hannah King, Andrew Brozek, Nick Spear, Ben Darce, and Todd Cowart. Catch a show at the Whitefish Community Theatre, Alpine Theatre Project, or the Whitefish Cabaret. And keep your evenings open so you can pencil in musical performances across the city. Personal favorites include listening to local bands late night, with post-10 p.m. performances at spots like The Northern or The Remington Bar.

DINING & NIGHTLIFE

When you pan ahead you can dine in style in Whitefish, stopping at local favorites such as Beldi, Swift Creek Café, Buffalo Café, The Last Chair, or Abruzzo Italian Restaurant. Forgot to make reservations? Check out Thirty Eight Whitefish, where food trucks gather with live music nightly. During summer months, Depot Park hosts a lively Tuesday Farmers’ Market from 5-7:30 p.m. brimming with fresh produce, food trucks, and entertainment. On Thursdays, explore Whitefish Gallery Nights along Central Avenue from 4 to 7 p.m., a celebration of the town’s thriving artistic community.

OUTDOOR TRAILS & RECREATION

Since 2010, Whitefish Legacy Partners has developed over 47 miles of scenic trails around Whitefish Lake, accessible from 15 trailheads, promising stunning views and a variety of trails outside of the national park. Whether walking your dog at Lion Mountain, a 2.6-mile loop trail just outside of town, mountain biking at Beaver Lake or Swift Creek, or foraging for huckleberries nearby, you'll encounter friendly locals and stunning snowcapped mountains at every turn.

GOLF & WATER ACTIVITIES

Summers offer perfect weather up north, where it’s warm enough to shed your coat but not so hot you’re avoiding afternoon activities outdoors. Whitefish Lake Golf Course features two 18-hole courses open to the public. After a round, unwind on the patio of The Whitefish Lake Restaurant with smoked trout and a glass of wine. In winter, the golf courses pull double duty as cross-country ski courses. Whitefish Lake, with over 16 miles of shoreline, offers fantastic opportunities for boating, wake surfing, and swimming. Just a short drive away, you also have Flathead Lake—North America’s largest freshwater lake (yes, bigger than Lake Tahoe!) —which spans 197 square miles, delivering even more opportunities to cool off.

A COMMUNITY IN TRANSITION

While Whitefish continues to enchant visitors, it’s also navigating growing pains. Housing prices have doubled post-COVID, making affordable living challenging for service workers. Initiatives like Housing Whitefish’s Workforce Rental Assistance Program are working to address this challenge. When you see a 1% fee added to your bill, it supports the Community Sustainability Fund—half of which helps keep local workers part of the Whitefish community.

A LASTING LOVE FOR WHITEFISH

Kristin Zuckerman, who penned this article, has called Whitefish home since 2015. Though she now splits time between two mountain towns, the other being Reno (where she sells real estate with Engel & Völkers Reno), her love for Whitefish remains strong. When she isn’t selling luxury homes in Reno and beyond, she’s enjoying the outdoor splendor Whitefish has become known for.

Music, Kinship, and Memories

Classical Tahoe returns for the 14th season in the stunning landscape of North Lake Tahoe

The anticipatory hum of the audience lulls to silence as the conductor begins and the outdoor amphitheater is suddenly filled with chords that you can feel as much as you can hear. Nestled into one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the forest of Lake Tahoe is the Ricardi Pavilion at the University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe along with a few other select venues scattered throughout Incline Village, which become the home of the Classical Tahoe music festival each summer. This 14th season, the festival returns with 16 concerts from July 12 to August 10. World class musicians, conductors,

dancers, and artists will perform for the audiences in this exquisite location, filling the environment with warmth, beauty, and a sense of peace and joy.

“Live music really gets into your soul. There’s a real difference between listening to music on the radio or on your phone to experiencing it in person,” David Pratt, executive director of Classical Tahoe, says. Pratt joined the organization in 2024 and is thrilled to be able to bring this standard of performance into the region from all over the world.

A truly unique and enchanting festival, Classical Tahoe offers a mixture of symphony, jazz, and chamber music and includes performances from musicians coming from top orchestras, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Symphony, and Philadelphia Orchestra, among others.

“Classical Tahoe is a very social event. People come together with their family and friends and make new friends. That combined with the music you hear in an incredible outdoor venue is what makes it so unique for locals and visitors alike. The

impact it has on people is what is most rewarding for me,” Pratt said.

He’s also excited that the festival is held so close to Reno. “Reno has so many great cultural institutions and musicians and it’s only about a 30 or 45-minute drive from Incline Village.”

Classical Tahoe holds both special events and community engagement initiatives offering something for everyone. The festival begins on July 12 with Classical Tahoe’s Annual Gala featuring an evening of jazz and classical performances with proceeds supporting education and outreach programs that nurture the next generation of musicians. The festival runs through Aug. 10, with one of the highlights being the annual Family Concert and Music Maker’s Faire (Aug. 9) where local students from the region get to play on the Classical Tahoe stage along with music and arts activities.

To attend, purchase tickets on Classical Tahoe’s website, www.classicaltahoe.org .

We asked three locals where they like to vacation most

Where is Your Favorite Vacation Destination?

Summer is here! It's impossible not to get the vacation bug to seek out sunshine, adventure, and time together with those we love. We asked our local travel enthusiasts where their best vacation destinations are to get away. To the beaches, secret hideaways, or glamorous cities, there are so many choices whether you love traveling abroad, enjoying history, or finding there is no place like home, even when you need an escape.

“Without a doubt, my favorite getaway spot is South Lake Tahoe. Sure, it might not feel like a true destination since I live in Northern Nevada and it’s just a short drive away—but that doesn’t take anything away from it. Honestly, even if it were hours away, I’d still call this place the one. Those alpine lake-meets-mountain views are next level. It’s like a vacation for your eyes too.”

Jeramie Lu, Owner, Jeramie Lu Photography

“We have two best places but it’s changing as we get older. It used to be Disneyland with the kids but as they get older Cabo is the vibe. We can get on a flight in Reno at 6 in the morning and be sipping our Diet Cokes at the resort by noon! Spending more time at the resort rather than traveling itself is the key. We get to eat all the foods without a care and come back sun burnt and full. We get the most out of our vacation time as a family and a couple.”

Devon Mix, Owner, DipDee Stix

"San Francisco is my favorite place to vacation and even though it’s full of scenic views and iconic landmarks, I love adventuring into the less traveled seams of such a historic city. Every visit is always a new adventure and [we] always stop for libations at our favorite hidden spot, Sweeties Art Bar by Fisherman’s Wharf.”
