Lifestyle Letter

It is with sincere gratitude and immense joy that Lesley and I present you, our readers, with the premiere issue of Redondo Beach City Lifestyle. This journey began with a bright idea, an ambitious dream, and a dedication to turning a vision into a reality. Now, several months later, we're thrilled to see this magazine come to life.

Lesley and I met here in the South Bay at a Halloween party on the Strand. Years later, we are proud 24-year Redondo residents, raising our daugh ter in a town that we love. We started Redondo Beach City Lifestyle to shine a spotlight on the stories, people, businesses, and events that make Redondo and our neighboring Beach Cities a special place to live, work, and build community.

In our premiere issue we are celebrating with our “Gents” theme—a heartfelt tribute to fatherhood. We feature some local fathers and learn what they love most about being dads. I’ll take this opportunity to share…What I love most about being a dad is watching our daughter grow into the amazing person she is becoming, celebrating her accomplishments, and supporting her during challenging times. She is truly a wonder to behold, and I’m grateful every day to be her dad.

We also want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to our Founding Partners. These local businesspeople represent the best of our community. They share a love of Redondo Beach with us, and most importantly, they shared in our vision and believed in the mission of this magazine—to highlight what’s great about our city and the South Bay. Your belief in us and in our vision mean the world to us. This magazine wouldn't exist without you.

As we enjoy the final days of spring, we’re already looking forward to the start of summer. In our July issue, we will use our “Explore” theme to shine a light on summer adventures, and offer a fresh perspective on parts of town that some of us have not explored in a while.

We hope you enjoy this issue, and we thank you for joining us on this ride.

WHERE COMMUNITY CAN UNWIND AND CONNECT WITH THEIR COASTAL LIFESTYLE.

The long-awaited California Surf Club officially opened its doors in May, breathing new life into the Redondo Beach waterfront. This ambitious venture co-founded by Allen Sanford and Rob Lissner located adjacent to the Seaside Lagoon spans an impressive 22,000-square-feet and blends exclusive member perks with welcoming public spaces, making it a community coastal destination.

ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY JP CORDERO

The relaxed,
inspired interior of the restaurant open to the public.

“After launching BeachLife Festival in 2019, we kept hearing from our community: how can we live this experience yearround?” said co-founder Allen Sanford. “California Surf Club is our answer.”

The club is divided into two experiences. On the members-only side, it’s about elevated leisure with a restaurant, indoor and outdoor bars, coffee service to start the day, private meeting rooms, activity rooms, courtyards, and relaxing outdoor lounges. But that’s just the beginning—members have access to a calendar packed with curated events including wellness classes, live music, speaker series, educational workshops, charity

fundraisers, games, and water sports that make the most of the seaside setting.

For the general public, there’s also plenty to enjoy. The restaurant, featuring live-fire cooking, a seafood bar, and classic coastal dishes like fish tacos and steak skewers, flows out to a breezy, open-air patio with a cozy fire pit lounge to take in unforgettable sunsets. Chris Brown, director of memberships, explained: "This is gonna be the coolest thing that’s ever happened in the South Bay."

What really makes the California Surf Club stand out isn’t just the location or the luxe amenities—it’s the heart behind it. The founders’ mission is to not just

A cozy, home-like interior space where members can relax and connect.
“We want to give back in a meaningful way.”

build a club but also to create a welcoming community where people focus on good company, good conversation, good vibes, and good views. At its core, the California Surf Club is about connection and a shared appreciation for coastal living. “We’re offering a space rooted in purpose and design to unite people—not just for a night but a lifestyle,” explained co-founder Rob Lissner

In addition to its on-site activities and amenities, the club also plans to build community and foster connections by giving back to local organizations including Boys and Girls Club, Redondo Beach Police & Fire Foundation, Heal the Bay, Surfers

Against Sewage, Jimmy Miller Foundation, Southland Parks Conservancy, KHYC for Kids, and others. “We’re going to do a lot of big events and high profile things,” said Chris Brown. “And whenever we’re doing that, we’re going to have a charitable aspect to what we’re doing, and we’re going to be giving back to the community. We feel that’s the right thing to do. We want to give back in a meaningful way."

Another part of the California Surf Club’s community focus includes reviving cherished traditions that once defined the local beach vibe like beach volleyball tournaments that haven't existed in over three decades. For longtime locals, these

tournaments are more than a sporting event—they are a symbol of pride, nostalgia, and beach culture.

Equally important is the transformation to this stretch of the waterfront itself. For years, it was underutilized and somewhat avoided. Now, the California Surf Club is helping breathe new life into this historic area. “By reimagining two vacant, cityowned buildings through adaptive reuse, we’ve created a space that preserves Redondo’s character, reflects its spirit and invites connection,” explained Sanford.

With its innovative design, prime waterfront location, and unwavering commitment to community enrichment, the California Surf Club is playing an integral part in Redondo Beach's revitalization story. It’s proof that when business is rooted in embracing the community, it can create ripples of positive change that reach far beyond its doors.

The Best Job: Being A Dad

FIVE LOCAL DADS SHARE WHAT THEY LOVE ABOUT FATHERHOOD.

“I love the love we share, especially when I come home and am greeted with a big hug by my boys. Witnessing our boys developing into honorable young men is what I love most.”

Matt Cox, realtor and father of two, gears up to welcome twins into the mix.

Fatherhood is often described as one of life’s greatest adventures, and for Matt Cox, it has been a whirlwind of love, laughter, and a bit of chaos. From the joy of everyday family moments to the anticipation of doubling his family size very soon, Matt’s story is one of gratitude, community, and the simple joys of life.

Before he started COVE & KEY Real Estate, Matt worked as a pharmacist—a job that, while rewarding, had long hours and a rigid schedule. “One reason I switched careers was that as a pharmacist, my schedule was not flexible at all," said Matt. "I was working 10-hour shifts. We didn’t have kids yet, but I knew that if I continued that route I would be seeing my kids about 3 days a week."

Matt transitioned to real estate for the flexibility to be present at school events, playdates, and more. The empathy he developed as a pharmacist helps him guide clients through emotional highs and lows with the same care and understanding he gives his own children.

For Matt, the best part about being a dad of two young kids is the feeling of responsibility and love that comes with the role. “I think I’ve wanted to be a dad since I was a kid myself,” Matt reflected. “The best part is waking up every day knowing God has entrusted me with these kids to watch over, protect, provide for, and love.”

Life is about to change in a big way. Matt and his wife Brittany are expecting identical twin girls this summer. “There are so many exciting and terrifying emotions at the same time,” Matt admitted. The news came as a complete surprise, though Matt had a feeling something special was coming.

While visiting his parents in Texas last year for the Thanksgiving holiday, Matt had a dream that left him convinced something big was about to happen. In his dream, Brittany delivered twin girls. The next morning, he shared his dream with Brittany and days later at their doctor’s appointment, it was confirmed: they were having twins. A few months later, they learned they were having identical twin girls. As for what Matt is most nervous about? “Never. Sleeping. Again,” he joked, a sentiment many parents of newborns can relate to!

The big reveal: Identical twin girls.

Matt and Brittany keep their young family busy with weekend visits to local coffee shops like Offset and Hi-Fi, as well as biking on the strand and scootering along the esplanade. They always look forward to local holiday traditions such as the Riviera Village Halloween Trick or Treat Event and the Holiday Stroll where Matt teams up with local businesses to hand out free coffee. “It’s one of my favorite events of the year,” said Matt. It affords him the opportunity to meet new people and connect with the community.

Community is just as meaningful to Matt in raising his young family as it is in growing his real estate business. He and his wife have developed

a tight-knit group of friends they can lean on—support that will become even more valuable once the twins arrive. “The friends and community of people we have found here, that we are able to do life with, are amazing,” explained Matt. “Being able to raise our kids with our best friends, experiencing the highs and lows together, is more than I could have ever hoped for.”

Now Matt and Brittany are busy preparing their kids for the new additions to the family, and the kids are gearing up for the arrival of their twin sisters. They've already started practicing with stuffed animals, pretending to tuck in the “babies”, turning the sound machine on, and telling everyone to be quiet because the babies are sleeping.

Fatherhood has taught Matt a lot about himself, especially the importance of finding joy in the simple things. Whether it’s a quick hug before work or the excitement of coming home to play with his kids, those small moments have become the highlight of his day.

As he looks ahead to life with four kids, Matt is embracing the changes with a sense of humor and faith. He’s excited, a little nervous, but above all, incredibly grateful for the family he’s built and the twins on the way. “It’s the craziest and most wonderful thing I could ever have the experience of doing.”

BOOKS TO TAKE YOU AWAY

I ASKED MY EXPAT AND TRAVEL-SAVVY FRIENDS TO RECOMMEND BOOKS TO TAKE ME FAR AWAY. HERE YOU GO!

The Corfu Trilogy

Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise -  My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and  The Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy.

Blue Latitudes

Blue Latitudes: Boldly Going Where Captain Cook Has Gone Before

The Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist travels to various parts of the world, following in the footsteps of explorer James Cook.

The Island of Missing Trees

It is 1974 on the island of Cyprus. Two teenagers, from opposite sides of a divided land, meet at a tavern in the city they both call home. The tavern is the only place that Kostas, who is Greek and Christian, and Defne, who is Turkish and Muslim, can meet, in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic, chili peppers and wild herbs. This is where one can find the best food in town, the best music, the best wine. But there is something else to the place: it makes one forget, even if for just a few hours, the world outside and its immoderate sorrows.

Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu, where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family.

Cutting for Stone

Cutting for Stone is a novel written by Ethiopian-born, IndianAmerican medical doctor and author Abraham Verghese. It is a saga of twin brothers, orphaned by their mother’s death at their births and forsaken by their father.

The Museum of Innocence

The author is a Nobel-laureate Turkish novelist. The book, set in Istanbul between 1975 and 1984, is an account of the love story between the wealthy businessman Kemal and a poorer distant relative of his, Füsun.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY

DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA

Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series, “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.” Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether its the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life.

So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime.

Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estateland, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot river. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed green “o hauses” that invite the outside world in.

WHAT TO DO

To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trails rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear—driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape—and bear witness to mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses.

WHERE TO STAY

Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-squarefeet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fire places and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent—ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).

For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a close-to-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.

Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-of-theart accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-emfrom-the-sky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.

DRINK & DINE

Montana’s best kept secret? Our hideaway chefs, making waves from the Montana wilderness. Chef Brandon Cunningham, Executive Chef at the Green O, is a James Beard Award finalist whose creations at the Social Haus are highly curated through an 8-course tasting menu. Other highly trained and talented chefs like Chef Brett Edlund, Chef Ben Scott, Executive Pastry Chef Krystle Swenson, and Sunny Jin, the General Manager of Food and Beverage, are part of the intricate patchwork of the culinary experience at Pomp, Trough, Shed, Camp and the notable Chuck Wagon—a summertime treat where guests can ride a hay wagon along the banks of the Blackfoot River for an Old West-inspired chuck wagon dinner. The menu ranges from all-natural chicken and Tomahawk ribeye to fresh vegetables grilled over an open flame campfire.

HOW TO GET HERE

Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.

SUMMER GRILL RECIPES

THESE DELICIOUS RECIPES ARE LIGHT, BRIGHT AND FEEL LIKE SUMMER

The sun has returned, and grilling season is upon us. With the nice weather comes vegetable gardens and fresh produce, along with the overwhelming desire to be outside as much as possible. We’ve compiled some fresh and light dishes that you can shop for at your local farmers market and whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal or something to grill for a crowd on the weekend these dishes won’t disappoint. These pair well together or can stand on their own!

INGREDIENTS:

• 2lbs. Outside skirt steak*

• 2 Tablespoons Lime*

• 2 Tablespoons finely, chopped cilantro

• ¼ Cup Olive oil or avocado oil

• ¼ White onion, finely chopped

• 1 Tablespoon cumin

• Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place skirt steak into gallon freezer bag

2. Combine all other ingredients in bowl and mix. Pour over steak and marinate for 3-4 hours or overnight in the fridge.

3. Bring skirt steak to room temperature by letting it sit out for one hour.

4. Get your grill hot on one side and medium on the other.

SIMPLE SKIRT STEAK

5. Once the grill is ready, wipe excess marinade off steak. Starting on the hot side, place skirt steak on grill for 2 minutes per side, attaining a nice sear.

6. Transfer steak to the cooler side of grill and cook until the internal temp is 130°. Let rest for 10 minutes (temp will rise while resting).

7. Carve and serve. This dish pairs well with beans and rice or served as tacos. Below is a chimichurri sauce that compliments it nicely.

*Outside skirt steak is a more tender cut than inside skirt steak, for this recipe outside skirt is recommended. Do not use too much lime as the citrus can cook the meat before putting it on the grill, resulting in a tougher texture.

SUM MER

CHIMICHURRI

INGREDIENTS:

• ½ Cup parsley, finely chopped

• ½ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• 2 Tablespoons red wine vinegar

• 3 Cloves garlic, minced

• 1 Red chili (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ½ Teaspoon dried oregano

• 1 Teaspoon salt

• 1 Tablespoon lime juice (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. You can make this in the late morning and let it sit for around 4-6 hours, or you can make it the day before and let the flavors meld overnight in the fridge. Just be sure to take it out and get it to room temp before you serve it, as olive oil hardens in the fridge. Serve over skirt steak or tacos.

ROASTED CORN SALSA

• 10oz. Cherry tomatoes

• ¼ Cup lime juice

• 1 Finely chopped jalapeno or serrano (whole or deseeded depending on desired level of heat)

• ¼ Cup cilantro, finely chopped

• ½ Cup white onion, chopped

• 2 Cloves garlic, minced

• Salt to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Grill corn, you do not need to soak the corn beforehand.

2. Place corn on the grill (inside their husks) over medium heat turning every few minutes.

3. After 10 to 12 minutes shuck the corn and put the cobs back on the grill for 2-4 minutes rotating frequently to achieve that charred look and flavor.

4. Cut the corn from the cob, place in bowl and add all other ingredients. Let the mixture meld for about an hour and serve with tortilla chips or as a taco garnish.
