EXPLORING SOCAL SOUNDS
Meet the Homegrown Talent at This Year’s
ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BEACHLIFE FESTIVAL, LESLEY A. ROLLO
A view of the LowTide Stage, home to many unforgettable BeachLife performances.
The BeachLife Festival returned for its sixth year during the first weekend in May, transforming the Redondo Beach waterfront into a celebration of sound, surf, and soul. While headliners like Lenny Kravitz, Sublime, and Alanis Morissette drew tens of thousands to the Toyota HighTide main stage, a powerful undercurrent came from three local bands—Sitting on Saturn,
BeachLife Festival.
“What we love about Redondo is the culture and the community. It’s really laid-back here. The people are more real.”
Sullvn, and Long Beach Dub Allstars Each group reflects a different chapter in Southern California’s ever-evolving music scene, yet they’re united by the same creative DNA—fueled by the coast, community, and commitment to their craft.
SITTING ON SATURN: FROM BACKYARD GIGS TO BIG-STAGE DREAMS
Every band starts somewhere. Sitting on Saturn began in Ventura County and grew into backyard parties at San Diego State, where their mix of indie rock, punk, and ska found a devoted following. “San Diego was definitely more like a party school,” said vocalist and guitarist Hoyt Yeatman. “We’d just play in people's backyards—it was crazy. That’s where we got a lot of our exposure.”
BeachLife was a special stop for Sitting on Saturn because it reminded them of home. “What we love about Redondo is the culture and the community,”
explained bassist Kyle Hart. “It’s really laid-back here, and that’s similar to Ventura County. The people are more real.”
Even with their national tour this summer and a new album, tentatively titled Kismet, due out this fall, the band carries the same unfiltered energy that made those backyard gigs unforgettable.
“We listen to everything,” said Yeatman when asked what’s on the tour bus playlist. “Country, 1930s jazz, Herb Alpert, The Elovaters. It’s all in there.”
And their guiding philosophy? “Some of the best shows are the ones where people put their phones away and just live in the moment,” added Yeatman. “That’s what music’s about.”
SULLVN: REINVENTION THROUGH RHYTHM
While Sitting on Saturn’s vibe embodies the ambition of a band on the rise, Sullvn’s story is a testament
Long Beach Dub Allstars bring their SoCal vibes to the BeachLife stage.

to the power of reinvention. Once the house band at dive bars like The Kraken in San Diego, they’ve since become a fixture at iconic venues like the Belly Up, and are now breaking through nationally, decades into their careers.
Their journey from San Diego’s underground is the result of relentless gigging, adaptability, and landing national management through their connection with Rick DeVoe (Blink-182). Led by Robert “Sully” Sullivan, who is also a nationally syndicated radio/TV talk show host, the collective is built up of Grammy- and Emmy-nominated bassist James East , drummer Tres “Sojourn” Hodgens, saxophonist Tomoka Nomura-Jarvis, and others. “We couldn’t get arrested outside of Oceanside,” quipped frontman Sully. Now they’re on Spotify with hundreds of thousands of listeners. In May, they released a new single, Rooftop, which they co-wrote and produced with Rome Ramirez (formerly of Sublime). Their polished, retro soul sound feels both nostalgic and new, rooted in their San Diego upbringing but built for broader stages.
Performing at BeachLife felt like coming full circle—especially for Sully, who lived in the South Bay for a period of time. “You can’t duplicate this vibe,” he said. “There’s not an area that’s quite like this.”
LONG BEACH DUB ALLSTARS: LEGACY, LOVE, AND THE LONG ROAD
Where Sitting on Saturn brings fresh energy and Sullvn shows the power of reinvention, the Long Beach Dub Allstars (LBDAS) represent legacy. Formed in the wake of Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell’s death, the band became torchbearers for Long Beach’s reggae-rock movement: one built on love, loss, and deep community roots.
With both LBDAS and Sublime playing BeachLife this year, it’s more than just another festival—it’s a reunion. “It’s nice to be back here, for this fest,”
“It’s nice to be back here, for this fest. It’s almost like a family reunion. It’s fun.”
explained saxophonist and vocalist Tim Wu. “It’s almost like a family reunion. It’s fun.”
Raised in the vibrant Long Beach scene of the late 1980s and early ’90s, the band’s musicians grew up playing small clubs and backyard parties, surrounded by peers like No Doubt and Reel Big Fish. “We all used to play with them constantly,” said bassist Ed Kampwirth. “A lot of bands would support each other, with some healthy competition as well.”
Now, they’re not only keeping the spirit alive, they’re passing the torch. Sublime lives on through Bradley’s son, Jakob Nowell, who’s forging his own path with the blessing and support of his father’s bandmates. “Jakob is doing a lot of things,” said LBDAS lead singer Opie Ortiz.
“He's discovering himself. He’s discovering his voice. He’s discovering his dad. He’s discovering his dad's friends—his uncles. It’s been healing for all of us.”
A SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SOUNDTRACK
Three bands—each on different rungs of the music industry ladder—all united by their Southern California DNA. Their sounds may differ, but the source is the same: songs born in backyards and dive bars, sharpened on the road and rooted in the communities that shaped them. The 2025 BeachLife Festival reminds us that some musical journeys start right in one’s own backyard.

The Sanders Executive Team: James (CEO), Diane (CMO), and John (CTO).
Nelson,
Probst,
Lord
““We’ve grown up in this area. We know every street. We know every school.”
When Sandra Sanders opened her real estate office in 1985, she did not realize it would lead to the reshaping of an industry. At a time when few women led brokerages, she broke barriers with a blend of Southern grace, strong business instincts, and an unshakable calm under pressure. What she built wasn’t just a company—it was a legacy rooted in trust, family, and a deep connection to the South Bay community.
Today, that legacy lives on with her children—James (CEO), Diane (CMO), and John (CTO)—who have grown the business from a local fixture into a global presence. In January, the company rebranded as Estate Properties and became an independent brokerage. "Launching as an independent brokerage allows us to embrace innovation while staying true to our values," said James. "This agility ensures we remain ahead in a changing market while continuing to prioritize the needs of agents and clients.” It’s a new era as Estate Properties focuses on luxury and international reach, all while staying firmly rooted in our community.
Estate Properties is not just a real estate office but also a champion for good in the South Bay community.
“We’ve grown up in this area,” explained Diane. “We know every street. We know every school. Our kids have gone to all the schools. We really focus on giving back.”
That commitment is evident, from sponsoring the Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K to supporting the Norris Theatre in Palos Verdes, where generations of their children have performed. The Sanders family is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of the South Bay.
While Estate Properties has kept its small-town heart, its reach is now global. The company joined Leading Real Estate Companies of the World, a network of toptier independent brokerages spanning 70 countries.
“We had to apply to be a part of this very elite network,” Diane explained. “They take the top brokerages from
cities around the world including Berlin, Paris, and New York.” This partnership gives Estate Properties’ clients access to agents around the world—whether you're relocating, investing, or searching for your forever home.
Yet, for all the cutting-edge tools and international prestige, the culture remains deeply personal. “Everybody has our cell number,” said Diane. “We know our agents’ dogs’ names. We know where they went on vacation. We really do know everybody and we care.”
Much of that culture was forged by Sandra, Founder/Chairman of the Board, who still keeps a sign in her bathroom that reads: You get up. You dress up. You show up—no matter what. Her children carry that mantra with them, wearing multiple hats to keep the business thriving. James, for example, isn’t just the CEO—he’s also been known to fix plumbing issues around the office. “Nothing’s beneath us,” added Diane. “We do whatever it takes.”
Under John’s leadership as CTO, Estate Properties has invested in advanced technology to streamline everything from lead generation to market analysis. A cutting-edge in-house studio hosts weekly hybrid training sessions for 250+ agents across Southern California, with Blackmagic Cameras, Zoom integration, and professional editing services.
"Our agents are the foundation of everything we do," said Diane. "When our agents succeed, our clients benefit.” That mission is supported through robust backend systems, ongoing training, legal and tech hotlines, and a culture that celebrates performance with events, awards, and even pickleball tournaments. “Real estate agents are fun people by nature and they’re hard-working so we like to have fun, be successful and help families with their American dream of home ownership and transitioning through life,” explained James.
Our agents are the foundation of everything we do. When our agents succeed, our clients benefit. “ ”
A team photo in front of the Estate Properties office on Catalina Ave in Redondo Beach.
The “Go Gabby” Team: Ramsey Ramirez, Mildred Chavez, Gabrielle Herendeen holding the “Crystal Award” for Superior Production in 2024, and Marija Mladenovic.
Even as their company expands across the globe, the Sanders family remains grounded in the community where Sandra got her start. James enjoys fishing with friends and cycling through Palos Verdes at sunrise.
Diane loves the energy of the Riviera Village and John enjoys competing in triathlons. Their lives are not just based in the community—they are the community.
And at the heart of it all is Sandra.
“If you were to ask my mother what were the big highlights of her career,” reflected Diane, “she’d say, ‘God
gave me the ability to help others and that means helping others in finding a home but more important than that, helping these agents to have really good lives by selling real estate.’”
In an industry often defined by transactions, Estates Properties is building something far more enduring: a legacy of connection, service, and trust.
Just as the keyhole in their new logo thoughtfully symbolizes, they’re not just unlocking doors. They’re unlocking futures.
Summer-to-Fall Skincare Expert Tips
KEEP GLOWING WITH EVERY SEASON.
With the seasons changing, your skincare routine should too. Glow Haus founder and esthetician, Cindy Morales, offers expert guidance on how to keep your skin healthy and radiant from summer into fall.
Cindy Morales Founder of Glow Haus
REDONDO BEACH CITY LIFESTYLE: HOW SHOULD WE ADAPT OUR SKINCARE ROUTINES TO SUMMER?
CINDY MORALES: Summer brings increased sun exposure, humidity, and heat, which can affect our skin differently than other seasons. It's essential to switch to lighter, non-comedogenic moisturizers, incorporate broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, and use gentle exfoliants to keep pores clear. Hydration is key, so consider adding a hyaluronic acid serum to maintain moisture without heaviness.
RBCL: WHAT COMMON SKINCARE MISTAKES DO PEOPLE TEND TO MAKE DURING THE SUMMER?
CINDY: A frequent mistake is neglecting sunscreen or not reapplying it every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Another is over-exfoliating, thinking it will combat oiliness, which can actually strip the skin and cause more oil production. Lastly, using heavy creams can clog pores; it's better to opt for lighter formulations during warmer months.
RBCL: WHAT PRODUCTS, INGREDIENTS, AND ROUTINES DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR KEEPING SKIN HEALTH AND HYDRATED DURING THE SUMMER?
CINDY: Look for products with hyaluronic acid for hydration, niacinamide to regulate oil production, and antioxidants like vitamin C to combat sun-induced free radicals. A gentle cleanser, a lightweight moisturizer, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen are summer essentials.
Incorporating a weekly hydrating mask can also help replenish moisture lost from sun exposure.
RBCL: WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS THAT IT'S TIME TO ADJUST YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE, AND HOW SHOULD WE TRANSITION INTO FALL?
CINDY: Signs include increased dryness, flakiness, or sensitivity. As we move into fall, the air becomes drier, so it's important to switch to more hydrating cleansers and richer moisturizers. Incorporating ingredients like ceramides and peptides can help strengthen the skin barrier. Don't forget to continue using sunscreen, as UV rays are still present.
RBCL: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF GETTING REGULAR PROFESSIONAL TREATMENTS VERSUS ONLY DOING SKINCARE AT HOME?
CINDY: Professional treatments offer deeper exfoliation, targeted therapies, and advanced technologies that home care can't replicate. They can address specific concerns like hyperpigmentation, acne, or aging more effectively. Additionally, regular visits allow for professional assessment and adjustments to your skincare regimen as needed.
RBCL: WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR SOMEONE LOOKING TO ELEVATE THEIR SKINCARE ROUTINE?
CINDY: Start by consulting with a skincare professional to assess your skin's needs. Incorporate products with active ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, or peptides, depending on your goals. Consistency is key—maintain a regular routine, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, and protect your skin from the sun. Consider monthly facials or treatments to enhance your at-home regimen.
RBCL: WITH SO MUCH SKINCARE ADVICE AND HACKS ON SOCIAL MEDIA, HOW DO YOU HELP YOUR CLIENTS NAVIGATE FACT VS. FAD?
CINDY: I encourage clients to be critical of trends and to seek information from reputable sources. Not all viral hacks
“A frequent mistake [during summer] is neglecting sunscreen or not reapplying it every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. Another is over-exfoliating.”

are safe or effective. During consultations, I provide education on ingredients and practices backed by science, tailoring advice to each individual's skin type and concerns.
RBCL: WHAT'S ONE SKINCARE MYTH YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD STOP BELIEVING?
CINDY: That "natural" always means better or safer. Many natural ingredients can be irritating or allergenic. It's important to focus on what is effective and suitable for your skin, regardless of whether it's natural or synthetic.
RBCL: HOW SHOULD A WOMAN ADJUST HER SKINCARE ROUTINE AND TREATMENTS AS SHE AGES?
CINDY: As we age, our skin's needs change. Incorporate products with retinoids to boost cell turnover, peptides to support collagen, and antioxidants to combat free radicals. Hydration becomes increasingly important, so use richer moisturizers and hydrating serums. Regular professional treatments can also help address age-related concerns like fine lines and loss of elasticity.
RBCL: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR SKINCARE BUSINESS?
CINDY: After over a decade working alongside top dermatologists in the South Bay, I realized my true passion was in creating a personalized, welcoming space where clients could feel empowered and confident in their skin. Seven years ago, I became a licensed esthetician, and two years ago, I founded Glow Haus—a sanctuary where results-driven treatments meet genuine care. My mission has always been to help people "love the skin they're in."

Dr. Anthony Taranto, Executive Director of Career Pathways
DR. ANTHONY TARANTO HONORED FOR HIS UNWAVERING DEDICATION TO STUDENTS.
ARTICLE BY LESLEY A. ROLLO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
When Dr. Anthony Taranto, Ed.D., was told by Redondo Beach Council PTA President Amy Huh that he would receive the Outstanding Administrator Award, he asked, “Are you sure?” But anyone who knows his story understands exactly why.
The award—the highest recognition given by the PTA—celebrates an individual who has made a profound and lasting impact on students. Amy Huh explained, “Dr. Taranto works tirelessly behind the scenes, driven by a deep commitment to education and community. His work has opened doors for students and helped secure nearly $1 million in grant funding over the past year. His unwavering dedication and efforts to strengthen our school district have made a lasting, positive impact on countless lives.”
Dr. Taranto’s journey to educational leadership began in a small town in western Pennsylvania. The only child of steel mill workers, he was told by his high school guidance counselor that he wasn’t “college material.” Instead of accepting that future, he graduated from college not once, but four times. “There’s nothing wrong with working in a mill,” he reflected. “But I knew I wanted something different.”
That drive led him to California during the mid-1990s, where class-size reduction efforts had opened teaching opportunities. He toured a school campus in Fontana, where classrooms had no heat and no air conditioning—just students with open hearts. “A student offered me her ice cream during lunch,” he recalled. “She didn’t have a lot but still chose to give.” That stayed with Dr. Taranto, and he took the job.
Dr. Nikki Wesley, Dr. Taranto, Dominic Taranto, and Amy Huh celebrate the honor.
The experience shaped his approach to education, reinforcing his belief in the power of human connection and service. After seven years in California, Dr. Taranto moved to Seattle, where he worked as a teacher on special assignment, realigning the district’s math program. He was later promoted to middle school assistant principal. After two years, the sunshine called him back to California, where he was hired by the Redondo Unified School District.
For 20 years, Dr. Taranto has served RBUSD as Principal at Alta Vista Elementary and Adams Middle School, Director of South Bay Adult School, Executive Director Student Services, and currently, Executive Director of Career Pathways.
In this role, he leads efforts to expand Career Technical Education (CTE), helping students explore paths in media, business, culinary arts, and more. “Our goal is to help students discover careers, not just jobs, that will prepare them to be successful in life,” he explained.
there’s a rapport you have with them and they feel that you genuinely care, they’re going to perform at a whole other level.” Many of his former students keep in touch, with some even pursuing teaching careers at RBUSD.
Beyond the office, Dr. Taranto is an engaged father and a proud member of the Lincoln Elementary PTA. He is currently organizing a college fair at RUHS this fall to connect families from across the South Bay and beyond with colleges and universities. “It’s a great opportunity to put potentially dozens, if not up to a hundred, schools from across the country onto our campus.”
We serve our community. Take pride in that. And especially when you work in a place like Redondo Beach. It’s a pretty good place to be.
For Dr. Taranto, education isn’t just a job. It’s a way to make a difference in the local community and beyond. From mentoring students to spearheading innovative programs, he believes every child deserves to feel seen, supported, and empowered. “You have to connect with kids,” he says. “If they feel
Dr. Taranto credits his career success to the mentors and people who shaped him: his parents, his family, his colleagues, and especially the Redondo Beach community. As he often tells other educators in the district: “We serve our community.
Take pride in that. And especially when you work in a place like Redondo Beach. It's a pretty good place to be.”
In a world that often celebrates bold voices and visible victories, Dr. Taranto reminds us that real impact is often made behind the scenes—quietly, consistently, and always with heart. He shows us what’s possible when we never stop exploring new ways to serve others.

LIME MINT
OSE MOJITO
Ingredients:
• 10 fresh mint leaves
• 1 lime, cut into wedges
• 2 tablespoons white sugar (or simple syrup, to taste)
• 2 ounces white rum
• 1 ounce rose water (adjust to taste, as it can be potent)
• Club soda or sparkling water
• Garnish: Mint sprigs, lime wedges, edible rose petals (optional)
Instructions: Muddle:
Place the mint leaves and lime wedges in a glass. Add sugar. Use a muddler to gently crush the mint and lime. Pour the white rum and rose water into the glass. Stir well. Fill the glass with ice. Top with club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently. Garnish with a mint sprig, a lime wedge, and, if desired, edible rose petals.
Place the rosemary sprig in a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle the rosemary to release its oils. Add the gin (or vodka), grapefruit juice, pear liqueur and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake well until thoroughly chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water or Prosecco. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a grapefruit slice, and a pear slice.
