Revolutionizing Healthcare

Concierge Medicine of Southern Nevada offers personalized, cutting-edge care

In an era where personalized service is increasingly valued, Concierge Medicine of Southern Nevada is redefining primary care in Las Vegas. Led by Board-Certified Internal Medicine Dr. Ed Soumi, with over 20 years of experience, and his wife Elissa, a registered nurse, their practice emphasizes a holistic approach to healthcare. This practice offers a unique blend of modern internal medicine and functional medicine approaches. If you're frustrated with long wait times to see your doctor, feeling rushed during appointments, and not seeing improvements in your health because your provider isn't addressing the root cause of your illness, Concierge Medicine of Southern Nevada may be the solution you've been seeking. This innovative practice is designed to eliminate these common healthcare frustrations, providing timely, thorough, and personalized care that gets to the heart of your health concerns.

Dr. Soumi, who received his bachelor’s degree from UCLA and his medical degree and master's degree at Chicago Medical School, has a philosophy that centers on proactive, preventive care. "We have cutting-edge treatment options from modern internal medicine combined with the holistic care and root cause approach of functional medicine," Dr. Soumi explains.

The practice operates on a membership model, providing patients with 24/7 access to healthcare support. Members enjoy unlimited appointments, extensive annual exams, and a range of preventive treatments. From full-body screenings to advanced blood tests and functional medicine evaluations, hormone replacement therapy, and weight loss programs with peptides, every service is designed to empower patients in achieving optimal health.

By limiting his practice to just 400 patients, Dr. Soumi provides an exceptional level of personalized care that is hard to find in traditional medicine. Patients enjoy same-day or next-day appointments, avoiding long wait times and making it easier to fit healthcare into their busy lives. Each consultation is a comprehensive two-hour session that delves into a patient’s health history, lifestyle, and current concerns.

"The majority of diseases are preventable, and many are even reversible," Dr. Soumi notes. "Conditions like type 2 diabetes, thyroid disorders, and autoimmune illnesses often stem from underlying causes, such as food sensitivities, environmental toxins, or lifestyle factors. Our aim is not just to treat but to heal by understanding and addressing these root issues."

This holistic approach focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of health issue, rather than just its symptoms, allowing patients to

enjoy lasting improvements in health and quality of life. The benefits extend beyond convenience, with patients having access to in-depth evaluations, preventive care plans, and lifestyle coaching that support them in achieving sustainable, positive change.

Concierge Medicine of Southern Nevada's approach is particularly beneficial for those with complex health issues or those seeking to optimize their wellness. Whether it's creating a nutrition program, exploring stress-reduction techniques, or setting wellness goals, Dr. Soumi's guidance is comprehensive and tailored to each individual.

THE RHYTHM OF WELLNESS

Using drumming, nutrition, and yoga to promote wellness

When you look at G. Eric Miles—his beaming ear-toear smile, his glowing skin, his lean and muscular physique—you would probably guess he’s around 40 years old.

“I’m 67,” he tells me while laughing during a recent chat, “But I feel like I can do anything I used to do in my 30s.” And with his serene and yet energetic presence, there’s no reason to doubt that assertion. As an author, a poet, a musician, a business owner, a teacher, a husband, a yogi, and more, one wonders how he has the time for such a full life. “I don’t even think about time in that way anymore,” he shares. “I have a whole different relationship with time now.”

It’s interesting to talk to Eric about health, and end up in a conversation about time. Yet with his positive outlook, healthy body, fulfilling career, and loving spirit, one does become curious about the connection.

CONTINUED >

As a young child growing up in Washington, D.C. during the tumultuous civil rights era, Eric’s early education focused not on his well-being, but rather his safety. “I was taught not to show any emotions,” he recalls, and for a highly emotional person as he, that began to take a toll on his mental and physical wellness. Then, as a young adult he began singing at a local church and noticed a transformation: A once dying institution was suddenly turning into a viable, celebratory place, all because of the choir. “That was the first time I realized how music affected people’s moods, attitudes, and state of mind.”

Though a seed had been planted, Eric kept on with his old habits and his health continued to spiral downward. More than 20 years later he found himself middle-aged, overweight, and in the emergency room being treated for a virus. “That was a pivotal moment for me,” he remembers.

A door opened which introduced Eric to yoga, meditation, and better nutrition. “Someone once told me: You get fit in the gym, but you get healthy in the kitchen.” And so, Eric began watching what he ate, cutting out meat, and engaging in regular yoga and meditation. Things began to shift, and Eric became very interested in

“Every civilization that has ever existed has had some form of a drum. That’s not a coincidence.
The drum simulates and stimulates what keeps us alive. It is the pulse of the universe. That’s why the drum resonates with everyone.”

the mind/body connection. Recalling his musical roots, he started working with a music therapist who treated children in the foster system. He became quickly convinced that music offered a deeper level of healing than any fitness modality could ever achieve. It wasn’t until Eric was 54 years old that he attended his first drum circle, and it all came together. “From the very first time I sat down behind a drum I knew it was something I would be doing for the rest of my life.” The seed planted in adolescence had finally sprouted, and Eric immediately immersed himself in the study of music therapy, vibrational healing, and the history of drumming.

Drum circles date back thousands of years to various cultures across the globe, with roots deeply embedded in African tribal gatherings, Native American ceremonies, and other indigenous practices.

“Every civilization that has ever existed has had some form of a drum,” Eric says. “That’s not a coincidence.”

Indigenous peoples have, and still do, widely utilize drums in sacred ceremonies, viewing the drumbeat as a representation of the heartbeat. “The reason music affects us the way it does, is because the drum simulates and stimulates what keeps us alive. That’s why the drum resonates with everyone.”

Drumming has reverberated—pun intended—into all areas of Eric’s life, creating a new sense of time (or a new beat) that he follows faithfully in each moment. It’s a rhythm that feeds his overall health and wellbeing, and that he’s committed to sharing with the world.

Nowadays, G. Eric Miles facilitates weekly drum circles for United Healthcare, where he touts their therapeutic benefits: stress relief, connection, and even neurological rehabilitation. “One of my motivations is I want to help mankind evolve,” states Eric. “And this is a way to do that.”

You can find a circle and learn more about his practice at miles2go.vegas

TRY THIS: To stimulate the non-dominant side of your brain, and balance your mindset, Miles offers a simple drumming technique called the Paradiddle. Tap a drum or hard surface in this cadence: Right, Left, Right, Right - Left, Right, Left, Left. Repeat for 5-minutes at a time, twice per day for 30-days straight, and watch the magic happen.

HOME Health

HOW PLUMBING, SECURITY, AND SMART TECH IMPROVE WELL-BEING

In today’s wellness-focused world, many people make resolutions to take better care of themselves starting in January. However, the preventative care of the environment where we spend the most time—our homes—often gets overlooked. That is… until there’s a problem.

Much like our bodies, a little proactive care at home can go a long way—saving us money and, more importantly, fostering a clean and safe environment that supports our physical health, mental well-being, and overall comfort for everyone who lives there.

Plumbing, security systems, and home automation are great examples of services that improve your home and your physical and mental health. Local companies MC Plumbing and DMC Systems are two great examples of how these systems can benefit our homes—and our health.

PHYSICAL HEALTH: PLUMBING’S IMPACT ON THE HEALTH OF OUR ENVIRONMENT

A healthy home begins with maintaining the vital infrastructure that keeps it running smoothly, and MC Plumbing is a significant player in keeping our water systems hygienic and operating properly. Just as the circulatory system regulates blood, oxygen, and nutrients through our body, proper plumbing moves water and waste through the home. Both components are necessary to keep things running, and if either system clogs or fails, it can disrupt the entire system—whether in the body or the home.

“Your home is your number one expense, and most people don't think to flush their water heater once a year or have a plumber come out and run a scope down their sewer lines to make sure there are no potential clogs,” explains Scott Root, owner of MC Plumbing. “Yet, you'll take your car to get an oil change every 3,000 miles, which is not nearly as costly as your house.”

From flushing water heaters, drain cleaning, leak detection, and replacing broken pipes, to installing filtration systems or energy-efficient hardware that conserves or purifies water, proper plumbing ensures a cleaner and safer environment. A healthy home starts with the basic infrastructure of reliable plumbing systems; something MC Plumbing specializes in.

MENTAL WELL-BEING: THE ROLE OF HOME AUTOMATION AND SECURITY

Along with maintaining the physical structure of your home, mental wellness also plays a role in home health. When your home feels safe, secure, and efficient, it has a dramatic impact on reducing stress and creating a relaxing environment. That’s where DMC Systems comes in, offering security system installation and designing unique home automation that provide comfort, functionality, and protection.

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Did I lock the front door?” or “What was that noise coming from the living room?” or “We haven’t heard from mom recently, I hope she’s okay,” smart cameras, motion sensors, and remote monitoring might be worth looking into.

“When you have a video doorbell and you have physical cameras around the property, lights that automatically come on at night to make the house look like it's lived in, smart locks that are going to automatically lock the doors and shades that will automatically close at night so people can't look in your windows—you layer all those things together and it creates a safer home environment,” describes David Chaddock, owner of DMC Systems. “It’s one of those things that's going to increase your mental health and well-being because you're not worrying about what's going on at home.”

That’s just the beginning. Today, technology can be used to control almost anything, depending on your budget. Automating

systems both inside and outside the house can reduce energy costs, improve sleep habits, and lower anxiety. Plus, automation makes homes more accessible and easier to use for senior or disabled residents.

DMC Systems' security solutions also offer peace of mind by safeguarding your home from potential threats—something particularly important to David, given his background as a former police officer.

From a mental aspect, homeowners can feel safe knowing their property is being monitored, whether they’re home or thousands of miles away. These systems play an important role in preserving both physical and mental well-being, especially for families with children or elderly residents.

WELLNESS STARTS AT HOME

A little preventative care can go a long way—both for your home and your health. By integrating plumbing maintenance and smart home technology, we can ensure that our homes are physically safe, comfortable, and efficient places to live. MC Plumbing and DMC Systems both offer essential services that help keep homes running smoothly, creating environments that support our physical and mental well-being. So, take a proactive approach to maintaining your home; your health will thank you.

First Healing Center for Child Victims Opens

MAJOR DONORS MAKE GROUNDBREAKING PROJECT POSSIBLE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM TRUJILLO

The nation's first purpose-built campus for child victims of sex trafficking opened its doors, marking a significant milestone in child advocacy. This groundbreaking $25 million Healing Center at St. Jude's Ranch for Children (stjudesranch.org/ healing-center) was made possible by the generous contributions of major donors, demonstrating the power of community support in addressing critical social issues.

One of the most notable contributors was Gard Jameson, who sponsored a residential home for $1 million. Gard, Founder of CompassionateLV.org, explained the motivation behind his donation: "When my wife, Dr. Florence Jameson, delivers a baby as an OB she always declares the divine sanctity of that child, and so our contribution to St. Jude's Ranch for Children's Healing Center to build The Casa de Compassion was for two reasons: 1) to declare the infinite value of every person who enters the front door of The Healing Center, and 2) to declare that more than ever our world needs the healing balm of Compassion.”

The Healing Center represents a transformative approach to supporting young survivors of sex trafficking. Located on 10 acres and sitting above Lake Mead in Boulder City, the campus features six single-story homes, each designed to accommodate four to six residents. The center can house up to 62 individuals at full capacity, providing a safe and nurturing environment for healing.

This innovative facility goes beyond traditional care models by offering a comprehensive range of services. It includes survivor advocates, therapy offices, a multi-purpose building, and outdoor spaces that promote healing through nature connection. The center is staffed 24/7 by trained professionals who provide specialized care and support.

CONTINUED >

A unique feature of the Healing Center is its on-site public school, the first of its kind dedicated to young trafficking survivors. This Clark County School District school offers a tailored educational approach with flexible learning options and integrated social-emotional support, addressing the specific needs of its students.

The Healing Center's opening marks a significant shift from traditional practices, offering a compassionate alternative to juvenile detention for underage trafficking victims. By partnering with law enforcement, child protective services, and legal advocates, the center aims to break the cycle of trauma and incarceration, providing a path to recovery and hope for some of society's most vulnerable youth.

Mercato Interiors Predicts Bold Trends

Liz Werner, the principal designer and owner of Mercato Interiors, predicts the interior design trends for 2025 based on her extensive experience in the industry. With a commitment to modern luxury and a client-focused approach, she emphasizes creating spaces that reflect individual personalities and ambitions.

Looking ahead, Liz foresees an exciting blend of styles in the coming year. "If I look into my crystal ball, I see bold colors, retro influences, cozy shapes, tech integration, handmade ceramics, and woven items as well as mixed materials, like wood with metal or marble," she states.

This vision highlights a trend towards mixed metals, which Liz believes will play a significant role in modern interiors. The combination of different materials not only adds depth but also creates visual interest in spaces.

Expert insights on interior design in the coming year

Mercato Interiors specializes in high-end contemporary furniture and décor, offering a hands-on experience that elevates clients’ spaces through carefully curated selections. The firm prides itself on building lasting relationships with clients while delivering exceptional service and design.

Additionally, handmade ceramics are expected to make a strong comeback. These artisanal pieces bring a unique touch to interiors, allowing for personalization and warmth. Liz notes that "the use of jewel tones and deep greens will continue to rise, alongside warm earth tones that provide a grounding effect.”

As lifestyle preferences shift towards multifunctional spaces that prioritize health and wellness, Liz emphasizes the importance of thoughtful design. "This is design at its very core. It's my job to take all these components into consideration in order to create a space for a client that is thoughtful, yet functional, and hyper-specific to them," she explains.

As 2025 arrives, homeowners can look forward to an interior design shift that emphasizes bold aesthetics and personalized touches. Now is the perfect time to consider updating your home with these emerging trends to create spaces that are both stylish and reflective of your unique personality.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue

smart SWEETS

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious.

Combine:

• 1 cup wheat flour

• 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled

• 2 cups oats

• 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon baking soda

• 2 tablespoons chia seeds

• 2/3 cup raisins

• Optional: chocolate chips as desired

• Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa.

Add this mixture slowly to combine:

• 2 eggs

• 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter

• 1/2 cup honey

• 1 banana

• 1 teaspoon vanilla

Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
