food & drink issue

With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall, that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages around town. We had the pleasure of sitting down with the owner of Hana Sushi restaurant and learned about all the deliciousness that they have in store for us — so get your tastebuds ready; you are in for a treat. We also included a few new recipes for you to try at home, whether you’re cooking just for your family or entertaining guests.
The smells of fall bring memories to my mind of sitting in my host mom’s kitchen in 1991 when I was just an exchange student from Brazil in Montgomery, Alabama. The aroma of cinnamon, apple, pumpkin, chili, and soups of any kind brings me right back to her table.
There is definitely an art to creating a flavorful dish that not only satisfies our taste buds but also evokes memories. The aroma of certain spices and foods can remind us of our childhood, which can be incredibly powerful and comforting. Food brings us all together, and whether we are sharing a meal with loved ones or enjoying a night out on the town, the time spent while enjoying food is invaluable.
As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you around town!

In the practice of pain management, there is never a “one size fits all” solution to help patients mitigate their pain.
At the Neuropathy and Pain Center of Las Vegas, our providers focus on each patient individually, and create a personalized treatment plan to suit their specific needs. From non-surgical modalities to regenerative medicine, we help harness the body’s amazing ability to heal itself, which in turn can allow patients to avoid invasive surgeries.
Known for its bold bagel offerings, New Jersey favorite The Bagel Nook opened its first franchised West Coast location in Las Vegas last fall, forever changing the city’s breakfast and brunch scene.
“We wanted to bring authentic New Jersey/New York-style bagels to the city and thought Downtown Summerlin was the perfect location,” said Jordan Fiksenbaum, local franchise owner of The Bagel Nook, which has two locations on the East Coast.
The famed bagel shop is not only known for its authentic East Coast bagels that Fiksenbaum noted are “crisp on the outside and chewy in the middle,” but also for crafting flavorful combinations that the bagel world has never seen before. Guests can savor everything from Fruity Pebbles to Flaming Hot Cheeto bagels and pair them with a full line
of 40 different micro-batch cream cheese flavors that are just as wild in taste, including Cool Ranch, Oreo, and Ghost Pepper flavors. Standard schmears and bagels are available as well, or guests can try one of the eatery’s signature bagel “Overloads,” like The Elvis: a sliced French toast bagel with peanut butter swirl cream cheese on both sides and freshly sliced bananas and crispy bacon in the middle.
The 16-seat Downtown Summerlin location offers a variety of other tasty items too that guests can enjoy inside the eatery, on its patio, or to go, including wraps, omelets, and pancakes. While nothing disappoints, Fiksenbaum highly recommends trying one of the bagel sandwich or French toast options, including a trio of specialty bagel sandwiches — The Kickin’ Chicken, The Fatty, and The Flaming Fiesta — that recently became permanent menu additions due to their popularity.

"Let Food be your Medicine and Medicine be your Food.”
This famous quote is often attributed to the Greek Physician "Hippocrates," also known as the Father of Medicine, who lived during Greece’s Classical Period. This philosophy has endured to today, emphasizing nutrition’s importance in preventing and curing diseases.
"I truly believe that when you eat the right foods and follow proper nutrition, you can prevent and even cure many chronic diseases," said Dr. Ed Soumi, a Las Vegas Board Certified internal medicine physician who has been practicing in Southern Nevada for more than two decades. He is also the founder of Concierge Medicine of Southern Nevada, a medical service that provides personalized care to patients through the use of both traditional and functional medicine.
"Over the years that I have been practicing medicine, I have seen the same group of patients
“I truly believe that when you eat the right foods and follow proper nutrition, you can prevent and even cure many chronic diseases.”
that are coming in and out of the hospital and just not getting well, or their chronic illnesses are just getting worse," said Dr. Soumi. "Over time, I have come to realize that our mission as medical providers should be in prevention and early detection and finding the root cause of what's happening instead of just prescribing medications alone."
Dr. Soumi said that when it comes to functional nutrition, many doctors are still not on board due in part to the fact that there’s still not as much research.
"Most major pharmaceutical companies are not going to spend a lot of money on studies that will say food is better than their medications or drugs," said Dr. Soumi. "But I have seen over and over again how getting rid of toxins and increasing nutrients can make a big difference in improving my patients' health."
Doctor Soumi cited examples where patients who have reversed conditions, including auto-immune diseases and diabetes, when they start thinking of nutrition in a different way.
One of the first things that Dr. Soumi said people should do is educate themselves on the benefits of functional nutrition. He said one of the easiest things you can do right now is "eat the rainbow."
"Just try different fruits and vegetables each week and avoid processed food as much as possible," said Dr. Soumi. "If more people would just eat real food and just do that alone, it can go a long way in helping Americans avoid many chronic diseases."
Dr. Soumi is not only helping to educate his patients when it comes to functional nutrition, but also, he's passing along these lessons to his 9-yearold daughter. He said it was his wife, who's a nurse, who was key in turning him into the functional medicine lifestyle. Something he wishes he had incorporated into his practice much sooner.
"It is really life-changing, but it's not always easy to change the minds of all of my patients' ways right away," said Dr. Soumi. "There are patients who just want to take a pill, and that's it. So, my goal is to keep raising awareness and get them to see how better nutrition can improve their health ... one visit at a time."

Now that most of us are back in the workplace and children have settled into the new school year, finding the right care for little ones at home might still be a challenge. But it’s made easy with Jovie of Las Vegas. They provide trusted care with well-trained nannies and babysitters equipped with the tools
The extra set of hands that a nanny provides can help get the family through a busy week, keeping everyone on track with work, family chores, and personal enrichment. For that kind of long-term care, you can choose from a diverse pool of experienced, qualified caregivers. The intensive vetting process ensures skilled candidates have at least two years of childcare experience, a clean driving record, their own vehicle, professional references, and safety training. And all Jovie employees go through an extensive local and national background check.

someone in your own zip code, mark your favorite sitter, and manage all your bookings. Perfect for a date night or a special occasion.
If there’s an upcoming special event — a reunion, wedding, or conference — with a large gathering of family or coworkers, Jovie will provide as many caregivers as needed to supervise and entertain the children. They bring craft kits and activity bins along with plenty of enthusiasm.
Jovie also provides childcare to families vacationing in Las Vegas, and MGM Resorts has named them a preferred provider at all their properties. Sitters can care for children in the room while parents attend a conference, a date night, or they can accompany the whole family when they venture out to explore other attractions.
If your workplace offers childcare, but the staff falls through, human resources or the leadership team can create a backup program that fits your organization’s needs. The same plan can be arranged through a daycare facility, your favorite gym, or fitness center.
Jovie caregivers also staff onetime or ongoing religious meetings and events, ensuring kids stay safe, focused, and engaged. They can attend to one child or hundreds with a Lead Coordinator to keep things running smoothly.

It seems that lately, choosing to go to places by plane has been somewhat challenging in many aspects. Often flights are delayed, canceled, and packed. Going through security has been taking f-o-r-e-v-e-r, and even though people have the option of signing up for TSA- PreCheck® or CLEAR, it is still a hassle to get through the lines. For these and other reasons, many people have been choosing to travel by car, whenever possible.
When considering where to spend our Fourth of July weekend, my husband and I decided to go on a road trip to Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, in Mexico. We rented a beachfront condo on Airbnb at the Sonoran Sun Resort in Sandy Beach, found a reliable pet sitter, packed a cooler with food that we knew would be difficult to find down there, and off we went.
We left our house on Sunday, July 2nd, at 8:45 am. It would be a 7.5-hour journey by going through Phoenix. On the way to the border, we passed through the Organ Pipe Cactus National Park, an International Biosphere Reserve where you can stop for hikes or overnight camping to explore a community of animals and plants that live in the Sonoran Desert. Because we were in a hurry to get to our destination, we did not stop. After a few more hours of driving, we reached our condo in Puerto Peñasco, and it was exactly as described on the Airbnb website. It was colorful and spacious, with a big balcony facing the Sea of Cortez.
We have the habit of renting places on Airbnb when we travel, and because I am a very light sleeper, I am always worried about the quality of the mattress. So, the first thing I did when we got into our condo was lie down on the bed to test the mattress. To my surprise, the mattress was incredibly firm and extremely comfortable. My heart sang, and I knew we would be able to have the muchneeded rest and relaxation. (I even sent our host a message inquiring about the mattress
because I want to get one for our house here in Vegas!)
After putting our belongings away, we slipped into our swimsuits and headed down to the beach. After dipping in the warm and delicious ocean water, we ordered a few drinks from the resort’s bar and bought a box of Cohibas (Cuban cigars) on the beach from a vendor named Victor. I had never smoked a cigar on the beach; it was so much fun!
Talking to fellow travelers, we discovered a few places to explore. We drove to an oyster farm in a remote area just outside of town, Ostioneria Mujeres. We had two dozen fresh oysters for $9.00 each dozen! We took our own bottle of tequila and had it on ice, which paired beautifully.
After leaving the ostioneria, we went back into town and stopped at El Capitan, a Mexican restaurant on top of a hill, to watch the sunset. We chose to sit out on the balcony so we could enjoy the view, which was absolutely stunning.
On Sandy Beach, a great beachfront dining option is Diego’s Tiki Bar, with phenomenal drinks and excellent food. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but totally worth it. We ordered a couple of margaritas, guacamole, and fresh fish.
On our last night before coming back to the States, we decided to go into town. As we approached our car, we noticed that there was a tear in the back right tire. My husband started to freak out because we had to drive 7.5 hours the next day to get back home. When we got downtown, we stopped at a

farmacía and bought a tube of super glue to take care of the tear. I know nothing about tires and mechanics, so in my mind, the issue had been fixed. We then sat down for happy hour at a place on the water called The Point. We had guacamole and shrimp cocktail, and I chose a spicy mango margarita.
After a calm happy hour discussion, we decided we were not satisfied with the super glue solution and went to the only Auto-Zone in town. The agent who helped us said that our tire was in terrible condition, increasing my husband’s panic level. The agent recommended that we drive to Momo’s, a tire shop just a mile away, to see if they could help us fix the tire. We were greeted by Christian, who only spoke Spanish and knew what he was doing. After examining the tire, he assured us that the tear was superficial. We insisted that he put a patch on the inside just so we could have peace of mind the next day and get home safely, which we did. Ultimately, we are so grateful that everyone was so accommodating and helpful. It capped off our road trip nicely.
What an adventure, indeed!

A culinary journey at Hana Sushi
ARTICLE BY SAVANNAH WOODS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS FULCHER
Nestled in the western outskirts of Las Vegas, below the Summerlin South neighborhood, lies Hana Sushi – a hidden gem waiting in the Hualapai Pavillion. This intimate sushi establishment boasts an ambiance carefully curated to transport diners to another world. Subdued lighting, minimalist décor, and traditional Japanese motifs create an atmosphere that invites reflection and connection. Whether seated at the sushi bar or the cozy tables, patrons find themselves drawn into an experience that transcends the ordinary. And whether guests are seeking a romantic evening for two or a delightful gathering of friends, Hana Sushi promises an enchanting dining escape.
Hana Sushi takes pride in offering two distinct menus that cater to a wide range of tastes. The first, a sushi lover's paradise, features an impressive selection of rolls and nigiris. From classic favorites like the California Roll to innovative creations such as the Summerlin Roll, sushi enthusiasts will find their cravings satisfied.
The second menu, known as the main menu, is a treasure trove of culinary delights. It spans a vast array of options, ensuring that even those who are not sushi aficionados will find something to delight their taste buds. Whether you're in the mood for a quick bite or a hearty meal, this menu has it all.
The team at Hana Sushi exudes warmth and hospitality. Vivian and Danny, the dedicated owners, radiate a genuine passion and meticulous attention to their restaurant and culinary creations. Our server, Steven, went above and beyond to provide invaluable assistance throughout our dining experience. Behind the sushi bar, the remarkable skills of Leo, the sushi chef, shone brilliantly as he
expertly crafted our dishes. Every member of the staff exhibited extraordinary accommodation and support, collectively creating a warm and wonderful time during our visit to Hana Sushi.
Our visit to this delightful restaurant allowed us to savor a diverse array of their culinary offerings, including the colorful Nigiri Combo and the satisfying Chicken Bento Box.
Nigiri, also known as nigirizushi, translates to "handpressed-sushi" and reflects the molded oval shape sushi chefs make with vinegared sushi rice or zumeshi. The Nigiri Combo at Hana Sushi was a true masterpiece, featuring an assortment that included Salmon Egg, Uni, Freshwater Eel, Seared Albacore, Yellowtail, Tiger Shrimp, Salmon, Tuna, Scallop, Squid, and a Salmon Roll.
It was a symphony of flavors and textures, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to the art of sushi.
A Bento box, traditionally, is a Japanese to-go box containing an entire meal, usually for lunch. For those seeking a perfect lunch portion, the Chicken Bento Box was an excellent choice. It included tender teriyaki chicken, delectable pork dumplings, a refreshing ginger salad, and crispy veggie tempura. This delightful ensemble was complemented by a comforting bowl of miso soup and a serving of white rice.
Hana Sushi transcends the typical dining experience; it's a haven where connections are forged and memories are etched into the heart. Amidst the sea of sushi spots in Las Vegas, Hana Sushi stands out by offering not just cuisine but a profound sense of belonging. It's a place where regulars become part of a tight-knit family, where bonds with staff and fellow patrons transform the restaurant into a cherished second home. Here, celebrations, whether grand or intimate, find the perfect canvas within the restaurant's serene walls. Our experience at Hana Sushi was so captivating that we found ourselves eagerly counting down the moments until our next visit. We highly encourage anyone in search of a distinctive and delectable dining adventure to hurry to Hana Sushi without delay.
In a world that moves at a relentless pace, Hana Sushi offers a sanctuary of tranquility where time slows down and flavors take center stage. From the first bite to the last, a meal at Hana Sushi becomes an ode to culinary excellence, cultural heritage, and the beauty of savoring life's simplest pleasures. It's a reminder that behind each piece of sushi lies a story, a tradition, and a journey worth savoring.
“IN A WORLD THAT MOVES AT A RELENTLESS PACE, HANA SUSHI OFFERS A SANCTUARY OF TRANQUILITY WHERE TIME SLOWS DOWN AND FLAVORS TAKE CENTER STAGE.”
As the leaves start to turn and the air takes on a crisp chill, there's something magical about the arrival of fall. Many of us are beginning to pull out our scarves and favorite autumnthemed décor to cozy up our spaces; many may even start planning holiday get-togethers and “Friendsgivings.”
With our October issue dedicated to the theme of "Food & Drink," we explore how two distinct businesses, Mercato Interiors and My Peace of Space, are reimagining the art of creating home entertaining spaces for the autumn season. While these establishments approach design from different angles, they share a common goal: to curate inviting and tranquil environments that capture the essence of warmth and hospitality year-round.
Founded by Las Vegas natives Liz and Robert Werner, Mercato Interiors has been a key player in the city's fine home furnishings industry for more than 16 years. Their journey in the industry has led them to understand their remarkable community and the dynamic luxury furniture market. As owners of Mercato Interiors, they offer an unmatched selection of quality products and top-notch customer service.
With the motto "The Fusion of Luxury and Design," Mercato Interiors creates spaces that are not just aesthetically pleasing but also deeply comforting. As autumn welcomes in a desire for warmth, peace, and coziness, Liz emphasizes the importance of customization, “Peace is such a personal state of being, which is why it is so beneficial for people to customize their surroundings to create what brings peace to
them. Peace to some could be the hustle and bustle of the big city, while, for others, it could be a secluded log cabin in the woods. Our wide variety of high-quality products and expert design team create a combination that enables any sense of peace to be discovered, customized, and personalized to the utmost level.”
Mercato Interiors excels in transforming spaces into eye-catching entertainment spaces. The perfect gathering requires more than just furnishings – it's about creating an ambiance that evokes feelings of togetherness and comfort. From luxurious seating arrangements to carefully selected lighting that casts a warm glow, the showroom offers a spectrum of possibilities for crafting the perfect get-together. As the temperature drops outside, Mercato Interiors invites you to bring the warmth indoors, creating sophisticated and welcoming spaces.
Holistic Interior Designer, Founder, and visionary behind My Peace of Space, approaches design with a holistic and intuitive perspective beyond mere aesthetics. With a background in architecture, yoga, and holistic practices, Danni has a unique understanding of the connection between physical spaces and well-being. My Peace of Space encompasses ‘energy-enchanting techniques’ such as Feng Shui, color therapy, chakra balancing, and sustainability to design spaces that ‘uplift spirits, rejuvenate energy, and promote wellness.’
In the midst of fall's cozy embrace, My Peace of Space is equipped to take your living space to a new form. Danni's focus on creating personalized ‘retreats’ within homes
aligns perfectly with the desire for warmth, peace, and comfort during the autumn months. Her motto, "Peace of Mind, Peace of Body + Peace of Space," encapsulates her approach to design, where the intention is to create spaces that foster holistic wellness.
When it comes to entertaining in the fall, Danni's expertise shines through. "Creating spaces perfect for entertaining is about fostering connection, closeness, and happiness," she notes. By infusing her designs with elements of fall's rich color palette and textures, she creates environments that embrace the season’s essence. From cozy seating arrangements that encourage conversations to thoughtfully selected decor that reflects the changing outdoors, Danni's approach brings the spirit of the seasons into every corner of the space.
“While these establishments approach design from different angles, they share a common goal: to curate inviting and tranquil environments that capture the essence of warmth and hospitality year-round.”
In this season of change, My Peace of Space reminds us that we can create retreats within reach – spaces that wrap us in comfort, authenticity, and a sense of inner peace.
“Creating a cozy ambiance is often achieved through textiles and lighting,” said Danni. “Lighting is often overlooked yet plays an important role in setting the tone of the space. A well-thoughtout lighting plan can transform the mood from vibrant and energetic to warm and intimate, further enhancing the space's suitability for entertaining. Ultimately, crafting spaces perfect for entertaining hinges on the convergence of intentional design, emotional resonance, and sensory engagement.”
As the season unfolds, Mercato Interiors and My Peace of Space offer distinct yet harmonious approaches to creating inviting spaces for entertaining, no matter your taste. Whether you're drawn to the grandeur of lavish design or the holistic embrace of intentional spaces, these businesses provide unique
options to prepare your space for celebrating the joys of fall — and year-round.
Imagine a scene: a luxurious sofa adorned with plush throws, bathed in the soft glow of golden lighting, surrounded by carefully curated decor that pays homage to the season. This is the magic that Mercato Interiors brings to life.
Alternatively, picture a serene space designed with intention, where every element resonates with your vision, complementing the cozy seasonal vibe. My Peace of Space creates this enchantment seamlessly, crafting a space where guests can connect on a deeper level.
Many of us often move at a rapid pace; the change of the season offers us a chance to slow down, gather, and appreciate the simple joys and comfort of gathering together. Mercato Interiors and My Peace of Space provide the vision and design know-how to work with you and your home, creating spaces that elevate entertaining. As you welcome the new season with open arms, consider how these local businesses can help you transform your space into one of warmth, connection, and luxury.

Ingredients:
• 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon baking soda
• 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/2 teaspoon ginger
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 1/2 cups canned pumpkin
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil
• 1/2 cup melted butter
• 2 eggs
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a mixing bowl, add the flour, baking soda and baking powder, spices, and salt. Set aside.
3. Combine the oil, butter, and vanilla in a liquid measuring cup.
4. In a mixing bowl (with a paddle attachment), beat the pumpkin, sugar, and eggs until combined.
5. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the liquid ingredients. Let this process take about 1 to 2 minutes so the mixture becomes light and fluffy.
6. Using a spatula, fold the dry ingredients into the wet and slowly fold until the ingredients are blended.
7. Prepare a 10 x 5 loaf pan by buttering it really well and then adding a strip of parchment paper to the bottom and up the sides for easy removal.
8. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour. The bread will be fully risen in the center, like a loaf. Make sure it’s fully cooked and brown on the top otherwise it will fall in the middle once removed from the oven.
