A ROSÉ AND CHAMPAGNE GUIDE FOR MOTHER’S DAY

A TOAST TO MOM

Instead of buying Mom a bouquet of roses this Mother’s Day, how about surprising her with a bouquet of rosé instead?

“One of the nice things about the timing of Mother’s Day is that it syncs up nicely with the release of the newest

only wines that legally can be marketed as ‘Champagne’ have to be from the Champagne region of France. What makes it special are the blend of grapes used — mostly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier — the region’s cool climate

“SPRING FOR THE CHAMPAGNE — WITH A CAPITAL C — FOR MOM.” - CHRIS CREE

vintage of rosé wines from all over the world. Those are always a great gift idea,” says Chris Cree, founder and managing partner of Cree Wine Company, a wine bar, restaurant, wine school, event space and online wine seller in Hampton.

Cree, who is New Jersey’s only Master of Wine, suggests rosés from the region of Bandol, which is a sub-region of Provence (Terrebrune’s Bandol rosé), or Sancerre region (Vacheron Sancerre rosé). “These bottles may be a little more expensive, but for Mother’s Day, we like to splurge a little bit,” he says.

Of course, you can also toast Mom — or your wife, grandmother, motherin-law — with an exquisite Champagne.

“Spring for the Champagne — with a capital C — for Mom,” says Cree. “The

and the chalky soil that brings that high acid and minerality to the blend, which makes it so unique and delicious.”

Champagne is made by fermenting the grapes into a still wine, then adding yeast and sugar to the wine in the bottle to create a second fermentation, which is where the bubbles come from, he explains.

Although Champagne can be a splurge — “bottles start in the high-$30 range, and the sky’s the limit,” Cree says — Champagne alternatives like sparkling wines, which can be as affordable as $15 a bottle, are the best choice for mixing. He recommends Crémant de Bourgogne or Cava, a sparkling wine from Spain.

Use these less-expensive bubbles to make a Kir Royale (crème de cassis and Champagne/sparkling wine) or a Bellini

(Prosecco and peach purée), which you can jazz up for Mom with different juices.

If you don’t know what your Mom likes, you can “sneakily find out,” suggests Cree, who hosts wine tastings you can bring your Mom to prior to Mother’s Day to ascertain her preference.

Personally, Cree likes to give people wine from classic regions, like Sonoma County, California, and Burgundy and Bordeaux, France. “I love Robert Sinskey Vineyards in Napa, California. They make a classic rosé from Pinot Noir grapes that has a beautiful presentation in a tall, clear bottle,” he says. “Another nice gift is a bottle from Olga Raffault, a family of women winemakers in the Loire Valley in France.”

Or you can buy local from quality New Jersey vineyards. “Alba makes a good Riesling,” Cree says. “And Beneduce makes a good wine from Blaufränkisch, an Austrian grape.”

“A

BIG MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE IS THEY

BUY WINE AND SAVE IT FOR A SPECIAL DAY.”

-CHRIS

CREE

Knowing what your Mom likes might lead you instead to a fine liquor. If so, Cree suggests Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao, which is akin to Grand Marnier. “It’s just delicious,” he says. “You can sip it on its own, over ice or mix it in drinks to spice them up.”

Also — and this may sound strange — please, drink the wine. “A big mistake people make is they buy wine and save it for a special day,” Cree says. “They save, save, save and then it’s past it’s prime.”

Uncorking the bottle you bring to Mom to celebrate her and give thanks for all she has done? Now, that’s something we can toast with enthusiasm.

OWNER JANE ALZATE’S TOP 5 CHARCUTERIE BOARD ESSENTIALS

A Variety of Cheeses – A well-balanced board includes a mix of textures and flavors, like a creamy Brie, a sharp cheddar, a nutty Gouda, and a tangy blue cheese. To enhance the presentation, cheeses should be cut and arranged in different styles—try  the zipper fold,  cubed,  chunked, or fanned slices for a visually appealing and inviting spread.

Protein Options for All Diets – Traditional charcuterie meats like prosciutto, salami, and capicola offer rich, savory flavors. However, to accommodate dietary restrictions and religious preferences, consider alternatives such as:

• Smoked salmon or other fish for pescatarians.

• Turkey-based options for those avoiding pork.

• Halal-certified meats for those who follow specific dietary laws.

• Vegetarian or plant-based spreads like hummus, marinated tofu, or roasted vegetables for a no-meat option.

Fresh & Dried Fruits (Styled Beautifully) – Fruits add natural sweetness and vibrant color, but their presentation can take a board to the next level! Some fun and unique ways to arrange them include:

• Crowning kiwis and oranges for a decorative touch.

• Creating flowers with sliced strawberries or mangoes for an artistic flair.

• Fanning out apple or pear slices for an elegant look.

• Using whole grapes or berries in clusters to add texture and depth.

Crunchy & Sweet Elements – A mix of textures keeps the board exciting. Include:

• Artisanal crackers and breadsticks for pairing with cheeses.

• Toasted nuts for a rich, savory crunch.

• Chocolate bark or brittle  for a touch of sweetness and contrast.

• Caramelized pecans or candied walnuts to balance salty and sweet flavors.

House made Spreads & Flavorful Accents – Our handcrafted dips and spreads are the perfect way to enhance your board:

• House made Hummus Trio – Classic, Roasted Red Beet, and Roasted Red Pepper, offering creamy, flavorful, and nutrient-packed options.

• Protein-Packed Cottage Cheese Dill Dip – A refreshing and creamy dip loaded with flavor and nutrients.

• All-Natural, Homemade Jams  – Bursting with fresh fruit flavor, the perfect sweet complement to cheeses and crackers.

• Whole-grain mustard, honey, and cornichons to add depth and contrast to every bite.

For more information or to place an order, visit Graze Craze Wyckoff at 382 Main St., Wyckoff, or give them a call at (201) 468-0023. They offer both pickup and delivery options to make your event as easy and enjoyable as possible.

The iconic property has just undergone an extensive transformation, blending contemporary elegance with Atlanta’s distinctive culture, making it the ideal destination for both business and leisure travelers alike.

For those looking for an extra touch of luxury, the hotel’s Presidential Suite, Governors Suite, and Executive Suites have been redesigned with meticulous attention to detail, offering guests the perfect blend of elegance and modern comfort—ideal for relaxing after a day of exploring the city or attending events.

Additionally, the property features three "Legacy Suites," which honor the hotel’s longstanding ties to Atlanta and its significant place within the community. These suites pay homage to the property’s history while offering all the modern amenities today’s travelers expect.

IDEAL FOR MEETINGS, CONVENTIONS, AND EVENTS

With its prime downtown location, the Omni Atlanta Hotel at Centennial Park is a key venue for meetings and conventions. DESIGNING FOR EVERY WOMAN AND EVERY BO D Y

HOW CENIA NEW YORK IS REDEFINING FASHION
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL LAGO
“BUT DREAMING ISN’T ENOUGH—YOU HAVE TO TAKE ACTION. GET THE SKILLS, PUT IN THE WORK, AND NEVER GIVE UP. IF YOU DO THAT, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.” - CENIA PAREDES

Cenia Paredes always knew she was meant to be a fashion designer. Long before she launched Cenia New York, her high-end women’s fashion brand, she spent her childhood in the Dominican Republic sketching dresses alongside her mother, a talented seamstress.

“I didn’t even know fashion design was a career,” Paredes shares. “We lived in the countryside, far from the fashion world, but I loved creating. When my aunt saw my sketches, she told me, ‘You’re going to be a

fashion designer.’ That was the first time I realized this could be my future.”

With that dream in mind, Paredes pursued her passion relentlessly. After moving to the U.S. in 1990, graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York before working for top design houses, including her mentor, fellow Dominican, Oscar de la Renta’s lines. But despite working in the heart of the garment district, she always felt something was missing—clothing that truly fit women of all shapes and sizes.

BRIDGING THE GAP IN WOMEN’S FASHION

Paredes’ journey as an entrepreneur began with a simple but game-changing realization: most fashion brands design with a “one shape fits all” mentality. As a woman with a curvier, pear-shaped figure, she struggled to find dresses that fit her properly.

“If it fit my bust, it was too tight on my hips. If it fit my hips, it was too loose on top,” she says. “I knew I wasn’t alone in this, and I wanted to create fashion that actually worked for real women’s bodies.”

Her designs quickly gained traction. What started as a side hustle selling to specialty boutiques turned into a booming business. In 2012, she won a coveted spot in the Workshop at Macy’s program, beating out 900 companies for a chance to sell her line in Macy’s stores nationwide.

Then came another breakthrough. Frustrated by jeans that never fit quite right, Paredes developed an innovative adjustable-waist jean, designed to accommodate different body shapes without the need for tailoring. The design was so revolutionary that she won HSN & QVC’s The Big Find competition, earning the chance to sell her jeans live on television.

“I had spent years altering my own jeans because they were always too big at the waist,” she explains. “I wanted to solve that problem for women everywhere.”

Cenia Paredes

BRINGING LUXURY FASHION TO RIDGEWOOD

In 2023, Paredes opened her first Cenia New York flagship boutique in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The store offers her full line of designs, including elegant evening wear, tailored dresses, and her patented jeans— all crafted with the same dedication to fit and quality that made her brand a success. Unlike department stores, Cenia New York provides a personalized shopping experience, something Paredes feels is missing in today’s retail world.

“I wanted to create a space where women can come in, get expert fit advice, and find pieces that truly flatter them,” she notes. “We also offer custom designs and special orders in over 150 colors and fabrics, something you won’t find at bigbox retailers.”

Beyond her own brand, Paredes collaborates with women-owned jewelry and fashion designers, stocking her boutique with unique, artisan-made pieces that make perfect gifts.

“I HAD SPENT YEARS ALTERING MY OWN JEANS BECAUSE THEY WERE ALWAYS TOO BIG AT THE WAIST,” SHE EXPLAINS. “I WANTED TO SOLVE THAT PROBLEM FOR WOMEN EVERYWHERE.” - CENIA PAREDES

MOTHER’S DAY GIFT GUIDE: SHOP LOCAL, SHOP THOUGHTFUL

With Mother’s Day around the corner, Cenia New York is the perfect place to find a unique and meaningful gift. Paredes has carefully curated a selection of fashion-forward pieces that go beyond the typical department store finds.

• Signature Fit Jeans – The perfect blend of comfort and style, designed to fit and flatter all body types.

• Custom Dresses – Made-to-order in over 150 colors and fabrics, ideal for the mom who loves something truly one-of-a-kind.

• Handcrafted Jewelry – A collection of stunning pieces from women-owned

designers, featuring artisanal craftsmanship from around the world.

• Italian Leather Accessories – Beautiful, high-quality handbags and belts that add an elegant touch to any outfit.

“When you shop local, you’re not just buying a gift—you’re supporting artisans, designers, and small business owners who pour their passion into every piece,” Paredes says.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CENIA NEW YORK?

Paredes has big plans for her brand’s future. She is expanding her Mother of the Bride collection, offering elegant yet fashion-forward dresses that can be customized to fit each client’s style.

“I want to change the way people think about Mother of the Bride dresses,” she explains. “They should feel modern, elegant, and special—not like something off the rack.”

Looking further ahead, she has her sights set on franchising Cenia New York and opening locations across the country.

“I’ve spent years working directly with customers, and I know what they need,” she emphasizes. “Expanding the brand will allow more women to experience fashion that’s made for them.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs For Paredes, fashion is more than just clothing—it’s a statement of confidence. She encourages women to pursue their passions, no matter the obstacles.

“Believe in yourself and your dreams with all your heart,” she says with a smile. “But dreaming isn’t enough—you have to take action. Get the skills, put in the work, and never give up. If you do that, anything is possible.”

With Cenia New York, Paredes is proving that fashion can be both beautiful and functional—designed for every woman, every shape, and every story.

From Stem To Vase:

TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART

Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings. As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions

associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language.

In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.

Flower Frogs

Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

“Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.”

Florals and Fruit

“Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.”

Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keetp the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.

Hanging Florals

For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact.

No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.

COOKING WITH RENÉE

How One Local Mom Turned Her Passion Into a Social Media Sensation

When Renée Cardaci found herself adjusting to an empty nest, she turned to the one thing that had always brought her joy— cooking. What started as a way to fill her time quickly evolved into a thriving social media presence, with thousands of followers eager to recreate her signature dishes.

Renée Cardaci

“I don’t always follow exact measurements—I cook by feel.”

“I love to cook. Everyone loves to come to my house, and I love to entertain.”

“I love to cook. Everyone loves to come to my house, and I love to entertain,” Cardaci said. “So I thought, let me give this a try.”

Since launching her TikTok account, Cooking with Renée, in August 2023, Cardaci has built an engaged community from her home in Franklin Lakes, sharing Italian-inspired recipes and creative twists on classic dishes. Among her biggest hits are chicken meatballs Marsala with orzo and her unique take on chicken cordon bleu pot pie. Her success has extended beyond the digital world. Cardaci has hosted sold-out charcuterie workshops, including a 95-person event at Volino’s Meat Market in Wayne and another at Uncorked in Totowa. She also caters custom grazing tables, bringing her culinary expertise to private events.

“I’ve had so much support from my family, friends, and community,” she said. “At first, my kids were skeptical, but now they’re really proud.”

With more than 46,000 TikTok followers and a growing fan base, Cardaci continues to inspire home cooks with her approachable style. Though social media has brought its share of challenges—like online criticism—she remains focused on sharing her passion.

“You have to have thick skin,” she said. “But I’ve connected with so many amazing people, and that makes it all worth it.”

Cardaci attributes much of her love for cooking to her upbringing. Growing up in a household where both her grandmother and mother were avid cooks, she developed an appreciation for homemade meals and traditional recipes. Now, she balances honoring

those old-world techniques while incorporating modern twists to keep things fresh and exciting.

“I don’t always follow exact measurements—I cook by feel,” she said. “But for my followers, I make sure to break things down step by step so they can recreate everything at home.”

Looking ahead, Cardaci has big plans. By the end of 2025, she hopes to publish her first cookbook, compiling her most popular recipes in one place. She’s also interested in expanding her in-person workshops, giving more people the chance to experience her passion for food firsthand.

For now, she’s savoring the journey, one dish at a time.

BREAKING Barriers

TRACY SANDLER ON WOMEN IN SPORTS AND CHANGING THE GAME
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TRACY SANDLER
Tracy Sandler

Tracy Sandler has built a career that seamlessly fuses sports journalism, fandom, and female empowerment. As the founder of Fangirl Sports Network, she has carved out a space in the male-dominated sports industry, proving that women can not only be passionate sports fans but also shape the conversation around the game. While her roots are in Los Angeles and her day-to-day coverage centers on the San Francisco 49ers, her impact extends nationwide—including to the East Coast.

BUILDING A SPORTS NETWORK FOR WOMEN

Sandler, a lifelong sports fan and University of Michigan alum, created Fangirl Sports Network nearly a decade ago with the goal of shifting how sports media speaks to women. "At the time, it felt like female fans were either expected to know nothing or just wear a pink jersey," Sandler recalls. "I love pink and sparkles, but not everyone does. I wanted to create content that truly engaged female fans." Through a mix of game analysis, off-the-field stories, and digital media savvy—including TikTok and meme-driven news—she has built a platform that resonates with a new generation of sports enthusiasts.

SUPER BOWL WEEK

While covering the Super Bowl in New Orleans this year, we had a chance to catch up with Sandler and ask her a few questions that we thought would speak to our female readers. Sandler's presence at Super Bowl LIX was more than just about covering the game—it was a chance to network, engage, and celebrate the evolving landscape of women in sports media. She attended high-profile events, including the Kelce brothers’ party, where Jason Kelce, the heart and soul of the Philadelphia Eagles, made an impression.

Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Sandler has her eye on several teams, including the Eagles. "The Eagles will continue to be a force to be reckoned with," she predicts. "They have a strong foundation and should remain a major contender in the NFC." Her analysis aligns with the high expectations Philadelphia fans have for their team, especially following seasons of playoff contention.

ADVICE FOR WOMEN CHASING THEIR DREAMS

Sandler’s journey is one of persistence, passion, and adaptability—lessons she hopes will inspire others. "At the end of the day, you just have to start," she advises. "You have to be flexible. When I first started Fangirl Sports Network, it looked very different from what it is now. But had I not been open to change, it wouldn’t have grown the way it has."

“You have to be flexible. When I first started Fangirl Sports Network, it looked very different from what it is now. But had I not been open to change, it wouldn’t have grown the way it has.”
— Tracy Sandler

Beyond Philadelphia, Sandler sees rising threats in the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders, as well as familiar AFC powerhouses like the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills. However, she acknowledges the unpredictable nature of the NFL, where injuries and offseason changes can shift the landscape quickly.

As women continue to break barriers in sports media, Sandler stands as proof that determination and vision can turn an idea into a thriving platform. And while she may primarily cover the 49ers, her reach extends far beyond the Bay Area, making an impact on fans from coast to coast—including those donning green in Philly.

With Super Bowl LX set for Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco next year, all eyes will be on how the season unfolds. If Sandler’s predictions hold true, Eagles fans may have plenty to cheer about come February 2026.

BREAD

FOCACCIA HANDMADE BREAKING

This recipe is quick and easy to make with just a few simple steps. It tastes great on its own, but dipping it in olive oil infused with fresh herbs adds an extra level of flavor.

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 ¾ cups warm water

• 2 ½ teaspoons sugar

• 1 package active dry yeast

• 4 cups flour

• 2 teaspoons salt

• 4 tablespoons olive oil

Optional:

• Fresh rosemary

• Coarse sea salt

• Fresh pressed garlic

INSTRUCTIONS:

Use a stand mixer with a fitted dough hook, and stir together the water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir again. Set mixture aside for 5 minutes. Mixture should be foamy. Next, add the flour and salt and mix on low until a shaggy dough forms. Increase speed and mix for an additional 4-5 minutes. Brush a large bowl with olive oil. Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel. Set aside for about 1 to 1 ½ hours until the dough has doubled in size. Brush a 9x13-inch baking dish with 2 tablespoons of oil. Uncover the dough and rub hands with olive oil. Slide your hands under the dough and fold it onto itself. Continue to work your way around the edge of the bowl, folding the dough onto itself until there is a ball that you can lift from the bowl. Place the dough in the prepared pan and press the dough to the edges. Cover the pan with plastic wrap or a damp towel and set aside to rise for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Drizzle the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil over the dough. Rub your hands with olive oil and use your fingers to make indentions on the surface of the dough. Sprinkle it with salt and rosemary and any desired toppings. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.
