Insights from Mercersburg Academy
From Dead Poets Society to Harry Potter to The Holdovers, Hollywood has helped to shape cultural impressions of boarding school for decades. So how much of conventional wisdom is accurate? Turns out: not a lot.
Myth #1: Boarding schools are elitist.
Reality: There are about 23,000 public high schools in the United States and only a few hundred boarding schools. So yes, that’s pretty exclusive company. But boarding schools like Mercersburg Academy encourage admission applications from anyone and everyone, regardless of a student’s or family’s background.
Myth #2: Boarding schools undermine a parent’s role.
Reality: Mercersburg is a partner with–not a substitute for–parents in helping their teen grow, develop, and acquire essential academic and life skills. We’ve seen time and again how the relationship between parents and their child is actually strengthened as the student becomes a more mature, independent young adult.
Myth #3: Boarding schools are cutthroat pressure-cookers.
Reality: It’s true that the academic rigor of boarding school requires hard work, but Mercersburg faculty design courses and assignments in thoughtful and deliberate ways–not as busyness for its own sake. Students are challenged every day and given the attention and resources they need to thrive. In our experience, students root for each other’s success rather than competing against each other for the best grades and college matriculations.
Myth #4: Boarding schools are where troublemakers are sent.
Reality: Mercersburg enrolls talented students from across the country and around the world who want to be surrounded by peers who are smart, curious, and motivated. Families choose boarding school not as punishment but because of the enduring friendships it provides and because of the superlative preparation it offers for top colleges and universities, for a career, and for life.
Myth #5: Boarding schools are too expensive.
Reality: Yes, boarding school carries a premium price tag, but thousands of Mercersburg alumni and parents would speak to the value of that foundational investment. To ensure accessibility and affordability, students may receive anywhere from a few thousand dollars in financial aid to a full scholarship.
Myth #6: Boarding schools provide too little supervision.
Reality: Students at boarding school stay busy with a combination of schoolwork, extracurriculars, clubs, and weekend activities. Plus, faculty live in the dorms and on campus, so there are plenty of caring adults to support, mentor, and guide students in making healthy decisions and learning to use free time wisely.
Myth #7: Boarding schools are too liberal (or too conservative).
Reality: If you were to survey Mercersburg students, faculty, and staff, you’d find people across the political spectrum. That’s the beauty of boarding school: there are a variety of viewpoints. High school can and should be a time for young people to examine what they believe about the world. We’re here to teach students how to think, not what to think.
of the world. The school’s alumni include Fulbright scholars, Medal of Honor recipients, Olympic gold medalists, Academy Award winners, former governors, federal judges, and a Nobel laureate.

MANDIRA CURTIS: "WHERE PASSION MEETS PURPOSE, AND STYLE BECOMES AN EXPERIENCE!"
After raising two sons, one now at VCU and the other preparing to start medical school this fall, Mandira Curtis found herself in a new chapter. With the demands of motherhood behind her, she turned toward a dream that had been quietly calling for years: creating a space where women could access extraordinary fashion without limitations.
A lifelong fashion enthusiast, Mandira’s closet is a reflection of her global eye and elevated taste. Think Cavalli, Camilla, ROTATE Birger Christensen, Zhivago, PatBO—pieces that command attention and tell a story. But like many women, she found herself wearing them once and then watching them sit untouched. The fashion felt fabulous, but the waste did not.
She searched for a solution, but nothing quite matched her vision. Rental platforms existed, but they lacked the magic, the uniqueness, the statement. That was her aha moment.
In 2024, Mandira launched Leasethedress—first online, and then as an intimate, by-appointment-only boutique tucked away in McLean, Virginia.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MY GYM POTOMAC
As autumn arrives and the kids head back to school in Potomac, discerning families know that the season's most valuable lessons extend far beyond classroom walls. At My Gym Potomac, the intersection of purposeful play and child development science creates something extraordinary: a space where neural pathways flourish alongside friendship, where physical mastery unlocks emotional intelligence, and where every tumble becomes a triumph.
HOW MY GYM POTOMAC IS CULTIVATING LIFELONG CONFIDENCE FOR CHILDREN OF ALL AGES.
“MY GYM IS WHERE OUR CHILD GAINED STRENGTH, JOY, AND FRIENDSHIPS.
For almost two decades, this children’s fitness center has redefined childhood enrichment for thoughtful parents. Here, expertly designed programming transforms active play into cognitive development, creating joyful experiences where every milestone, from a toddler's first confident step to a child's complex coordination sequence.
At My Gym Potomac, purposeful play powers early development. Each activity—from crawling to climbing—is designed to strengthen both body and brain. As children build coordination and balance, they’re also wiring neural pathways that support language, problem-solving, and focus. The result? Confidence in motion and readiness for the classroom. Parents often note how their children “learn through fun,” a testament to My Gym’s certified instructors and researchbacked programming.
Beyond physical milestones, My Gym fosters emotional growth. Structured classes promote perseverance, independence, and self-belief, especially important for young learners. Through imaginative play, obstacle courses, and consistent encouragement, kids learn that trying is as valuable as succeeding. One parent reflects, “My daughter started out shy, but now she leads the group with pride.” Every class is an opportunity to feel seen and celebrated.
For many Potomac families, My Gym feels like a second home. Programs grow with your child, from parent-and-me classes to camps and birthday parties. Many families come for the classes, but they stay for the friendships they build along the way.
This is childhood enrichment, where movement meets belonging, science informs joy, and where Potomac families invest in their children's most essential foundation: unshakeable confidence. Ready to join the fun? Visit mygym.com/ potomac or call (301) 983‑5300 to explore classes and book your child’s first session.

Luxury Event Planner Plans Her Own Exclusive Event – Her Wedding
ARTICLE BY JESSICA DEARMOND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS HILTZ & BRITTANY COONRAD
As a well-known and respected luxury event planner, Brittany Ford has long been the go-to manager of upscale celebrations, including a Real Housewives finale and numerous celebrity weddings.
After her 2024 engagement to Ben Ford, she spent a year carefully mapping out her own nuptials, with the advantage of having access to the best videographers, photographers, makeup artists, and wardrobe designers she regularly works with in her business.
Brittany and Ben had been classmates in middle school in Culpeper, Virginia, and both come from law enforcement families. However, they didn’t reconnect until years later via Facebook, and that’s when they began dating.
The first step in planning her wedding was organizing her engagement party in August 2024, with 180 guests at a location near their home in Ashburn, Virginia. It was a full production, complete with catering, beautiful floral arrangements, photography, and videography, thanks to Chris Hiltz, owner of TLIC Media.
Brittany jokes that hers was truly a tri-state wedding. The first ceremony was held in a small chapel in Virginia, where her father walked her down the aisle.
The next two events were lavish celebrations for friends and family. For the Outer Banks celebration, Brittany secured the largest rental home available: a 36-bedroom beachfront estate with an arcade, movie theater, and expansive pool. Her goal? “To bring D.C. to the Outer Banks,” she said.
The wedding week kicked off with a welcome pool party, cocktail party, rehearsal dinner, and live entertainment from Junie Henderson of the go-go band Experience Unlimited (EU).
The big day was hosted at Roanoke Island Festival Park, offering an unforgettable experience for their 120 guests. Cocktail hour featured Dom Pérignon champagne, caviar bumps, and a raw bar. Floral installations included a 12-foot chandelier and a 24-foot-long floral structure suspended over the head table. Dinner included custom cocktails and a trio of entrées, beef tenderloin, lamb, and snapper. Guests received custom perfumes by Bontu Itano, each engraved with the Ford name. The festivities concluded with a farewell brunch

the next day, with shuttle buses transporting guests to and from each event.
For a more intimate setting that reflected their shared love of classic architecture, antiques, and old-school romance, Brittany and Ben selected The Greenbrier, a luxury resort in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, as their final wedding destination.
Guests were asked to wear all-black attire. Ben wore four custom-made tuxedos throughout the events, while Brittany’s wardrobe included Jimmy Choo and Louboutin heels, Chanel handbags, and her signature scent, Delina by Parfums de Marly. She wore five different designer dresses, each purchased at Elegance by Roya in Tysons Corner.
The couple’s stunning cover photo was taken in their suite, the Greenbrier’s Presidential Suite. For her departure photo from the suite, Brittany wore a breathtaking, custom 12-foot ostrich feather cape designed by Suigens, that enveloped her exquisite bridal gown

The Washington DC Auto Show is a beloved annual tradition and the largest public event of its kind in the nation's capital, set to commence on Jan 23rd-Feb 6th, 2026. The Corvette Club of America (CCA) is a proud participant.
"It's really special to see six-year-old girls and eight-year-old boys light up," said CCA member Kera Weaber Aronson. "They ask, 'Can I sit in your car?' It's their first Corvette experience."
Founded in 1956, the CCA has over 177 members nationwide, with most in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area. Based in Maryland, the Club holds community events and gatherings, welcoming anyone with a love for Corvettes-no ownership required. The Club is known for its multigenerational appeal, with many couples and families taking part.
One of the CCA's signature events is a visit to a Maryland elder care facility. "Residents see cars they remember from the 1950s and '60s," said Aronson. "It sparks stories and smiles."
A highlight among CCA members is the Weaber family's 1978 Silver Anniversary Corvette. This special edition features unique "fastback" styling and a two-tone silver paint job. Only 15,283 were produced in this color combination, and just 15% were made with a manual transmission.
John Weaber, then a young attorney, bought the car new. Over the decades, it became a treasured part of the family. His daughter, Kera, helped polish it as a child and grew to love it. Kera's daughter, Luciana, wrote heartfelt essays to her grandfather each year asking him to gift the car to her mom.
In 2024, for Mother's Day, Luciana's wish came true. John gave Kera the pristine "Silver Queen" Corvette, now with just 25,254 miles on the odometer.
"She's amazing at driving stick," Luciana wrote. "She will treasure this car and keep it alive."
From auto show floor to family heirloom, the story of this Corvette is one of love, legacy, and generations bonded by a passion for the open road.
“The Corvette Club of America attracts multiple generations of the same family.” “
QUAINT, ARTSY, AND PICTURESQUE NEW HOPE: PLAN THE PERFECT GETAWAY
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
“I have developed nice relationships with many of the returning guests who are like family.”
— Pineapple Hill Inn B&B Manager Lori Coffman.
Just three hours from the Potomac and the DMV, awaits the perfect weekend getaway in the picturesque river view town of New Hope, Pennsylvania.
As the guest of the tourism bureau of Visit Bucks County, my family stayed at the historic Pineapple Hill Inn Bed & Breakfast , one of the many inviting homesteads, located on nearly six acres between Washington Crossing and New Hope, at 1324 River Road.
Originally constructed in 1790, this inviting B&B has been hosting guests for 45 years. The charming and well-appointed Inn, is decorated in a pineapple motif with lovely hand-picked antiques, polished hardwood floors, in-room fireplaces, an in-ground pool, fire pits for s'mores toasting, and delicious homemade breakfast prepared by Pineapple Hill Inn Manager Lori Coffman.
Our weekend breakfast fare included assorted fresh berries, a choice of juice, delicious coffee, homemade cinnamon buns, and one of several scrumptious homemade entrees such as French toast, pancakes, or croissant casserole. There was always coffee, tea, and cookies available for all-day snacking.
“I love all of the people who come to stay with us. They are usually on vacation and always in a good mood,” explains Coffman. “I have developed nice relationships with many of the returning guests who are like family.”
Nearby attractions include Ghost Tours of New Hope, the ideal way to enjoy fall weekends from Halloween to Thanksgiving. Public tours run Saturday nights from June through November.
There are added tours on Friday nights in October, with “steady numbers” for those seeking a spooky Halloween experience. There are also private tours available, which require reservations.
Tour Guide Scott Randolph has been leading the one-hour historical walking tours since 2007 for visitors with a range of interests. Those who take the tour will learn about local legends and hear some lore. He
said visitors enjoy the mystery, history, and scores of true stories.
Known as an artsy town, there are numerous restaurants, art galleries, wineries, breweries, and shops to fill your weekend with everything from books and comic books to boozy lemonade and ice cream, as well as soaps. lotions, candy, hot sauces, and a variety of desserts.
For a lovely short country drive, I recommend a stop at Manhoff Market Gardens and Cidery in nearby Solebury, for hard cider and the juiciest strawberries that I have ever tasted. The market also has seasonal fruit picking tours.
Other area tours include the Bucks County Ale Trail, a brewpub tour featuring hand-crafted beer, with locally sourced menus and cocktails, live music, and special events, as well as the popular Bucks County Wine Tour.
Our first memorable dinner was at Greenhouse New Hope, where I had the delicious French Dip. My guests had chicken with French fries, and a sweet potato and black bean burger. For dessert, we shared a delicious cookies and cream mousse.
Our second night, we headed to Karla’s Restaurant , where I had the filet special with homemade mashed potatoes and broccoli, while my guests had a fried chicken sandwich with a side of housecut French fries, and the house special ravioli with chicken and peas in a light and creamy white sauce. We saved our dessert for the s'mores that we happily toasted back at the Pineapple Hill Inn.
When you are making your hotel and restaurant reservations, be sure to check out The Bucks County Playhouse for high-level entertainment. The venue has hosted memorable musicals and plays, including several world premieres that went on to tour or play on Broadway. Future shows include The Rocky Horror Show from Oct. 10 through Nov. 2, and Elf: The Musical from Nov. 21 through Jan. 4. For tickets and information, call 215-862-2121.
Q: My dog seems more anxious lately—could the back-to-school change be affecting her?
A: Definitely. Many dogs get stressed when their routine suddenly shifts—like when the house gets quiet after a busy summer. This “back-to-school blues” can show up as barking, pacing, chewing, or changes in appetite. To help, try leaving on calming music, offering midday enrichment, and easing into the new routine. If your dog seems especially unsettled, talk to your vet—short-term medications or calming supplements can make a big difference during transitions. – Dr. Monica Calderon

Potomac Lifestyle Magazine at the Virginia Gold Cup 2025
By Sharon Reed
The Virginia Gold Cup, a legendary annual steeplechasing event that now draws over 50,000 enthusiastic spectators, has humble roots steeped in Virginia’s rich history. Steeplechasing has been a cherished tradition in the region since Colonial times, when horses were indispensable for transportation, farming, and war. Figures like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson once competed in sporting events over fences, highlighting the sport’s deep ties to Virginia’s heritage. Organized steeplechase races began in Fauquier County as early as 1844 at White Sulphur Springs, a fashionable spa near Warrenton.
Held on May 3, 2025, the Virginia Gold Cup returned to The Plains, Virginia with its signature blend of equestrian tradition, high fashion, and community celebration. Marking a remarkable Centennial year, the event was made even more memorable by Potomac Lifestyle Magazine’s sponsorship
of the client tent, an elegant affair styled by Concrete Rose Flora, blending timeless sophistication with historic significance.
While the thundering hooves of thoroughbreds and stunning vistas captivated the crowd, it was the hats that truly stole the show. These grand headpieces, synonymous with events like the Gold Cup, carry a fascinating history that transcends their role as mere accessories.
The fascination with big hats began during the Edwardian era (1901–1910), when wide-brimmed creations adorned with feathers, flowers, and intricate embellishments became symbols of wealth and social status. Styles like the iconic "Merry Widow"
hat showcased opulence and the ability to maintain such elaborate accessories.
These oversized hats were also influenced by the voluminous hairstyles of the time, which provided a striking foundation for their grandeur. Even today, Edwardian hats are celebrated as enduring icons of sophistication and elegance.
Beyond fashion, big hats hold special significance in cultural and religious traditions. In African American communities, "church hats" symbolize faith, dignity, and cultural pride. During the Civil Rights Movement, they became powerful expressions of identity and resilience. This tradition resonates with the Virginia Gold Cup, where attendees’ vibrant and diverse styles honor both individuality and shared history.

This year’s Gold Cup was a testament to the intersection of style, history, and community. Potomac Lifestyle Magazine and Brittany Ford Events infused the day with fresh energy, hosting sponsors, readers, and community leaders while highlighting the magazine’s dedication to celebrating local culture.
Under the shade of elegant tents, the event became a living gallery of millinery art. From Edwardian-inspired creations to sleek modern designs, each hat told a unique story of artistry, heritage, and self-expression.

culture, and evolving fashion. Much like the Kentucky Derby, the Gold Cup showcases the enduring allure of millinery art, where every hat reflects creativity and individuality. The evolution of hat fashion mirrors the changing times:
• Early 1900s: Grace and refinement with florals, feathers, and lace symbolizing class and femininity.
• Mid 20th Century (1930s 1950s): Larger and more intricate hats embodied vintage glamour, complementing elegant dresses.
• 1960s 1980s: Bold, oversized hats with towering embellishments became signature statements for women.
• 1990s Present: Hats evolved into forms of self-expression, with custom designs reflecting individuality. Fascinators gained popularity as a modern alternative.
• Modern Trends: Vibrant colors, bold patterns, feathers, flowers, and

There’s something truly enchanting about tying the knot in a land of glaciers, waterfalls, and shimmering northern lights.
For Jacqueline Matter and Wes Teramana, this dream became a reality—a fairy tale set against the breathtaking backdrop of Iceland.
Their journey began with anticipation and awe as they arrived in Reykjavik, the capital that combines vibrant culture with natural wonder. But it was outside the city where the real magic happened. Surrounded by sprawling lava fields and steaming geysers, they chose a secluded spot near a cascading waterfall for their vows. The air crackled with energy and romance as they exchanged promises beneath an endless sky that shifted from pale dawn to midnight sun.
Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes lent a surreal charm to their special day. The scene was straight from a fairytale— draped in the glow of the summer months, including their May
wedding, brought nearly 20 hours of sunlight, a radiant symbol of the brilliance that will continue to illuminate their journey through life together.
For Jacqueline and her husband, Iceland was more than a destination—it was a realm of possibility and wonder, transforming their wedding into an extraordinary adventure. The stark, icy beauty of the landscape contrasted with the warmth of their love, creating a memory they will cherish forever.
Their Icelandic wedding embodies the spirit of explorers—setting out into the unknown to forge a bond in one of the most magical places on Earth. It’s a testament to the power of love and the allure of adventure, reminding us all that sometimes, the most unforgettable moments happen where the extraordinary meets the everyday.

INthis unexpected love affair, fashion and interiors are more than just a simple pairing—they are rooted in culture, creativity, and the human desire for self-expression.
As conscious consumers of the 21st century, participating in a retail landscape that is oversaturated and struggling to adapt to the ever-changing demands of the modern customer, our purchasing power should not only respond to a feeling of want but also prioritize items that reflect who we are and who we aspire to be. This is clearly visible through the representation of fashion and interiors.
Although we tend to consider cost-perwear primarily when it comes to clothing, this same principle applies to furniture and the function it brings to the home. Aesthetics and functionality both play a role in this pairing, painting a picture for
the rest of the world of who the wearer is and how they live in their space.
The woman who wears a blazer with sharp shoulders that makes her feel powerful in her everyday life—or the black dress that gives her a necessary boost of confidence—may naturally gravitate toward sleek, modern furniture that feels equally strong and elevates the space where the modern woman thrives.
In the same way, someone who prefers an effortless ensemble—like their favorite white T-shirt and comfortable denim jeans—may also look for home pieces that
are functional and make their guests feel at ease. Even a handmade rug, one that sparks conversation about where it was found and adds a focal point to a room, mirrors how we search our closets for a sweater tied to a cherished memory.
Just as we carefully choose outfits to express ourselves, it’s equally important to ensure that our living spaces are designed with the same intention. More than ever, modern buyers are making purchasing decisions based on personal morals and values, forming a new wave of consumers who seek products that are both high-quality and environmentally or socially conscious, whether for themselves or their homes.
The following imagery affirms that living a timeless lifestyle across all aspects of life is possible through the thoughtful styling of sustainable clothing and vintage furniture. As the modern retail landscape continues to evolve, it’s become increasingly vital to make conscious consumer choices—ones that allow us to express our truest selves through both our wardrobes and the places we call home.
