Shelley Heron wholeheartedly believes in providing the freshest local produce and ingredients to her neighbors, clients, friends, and family.
The founder and owner of innovative catering and event planning business, Foodies Farms and Friends, located in the Agricultural Reserve of Montgomery County, MD, is a dream come true for Heron. She moved with her husband and two children from a small town outside Melbourne, Australia,12 years ago to live on 25 acres in the Reserve.
Created in the 1980s, the Agricultural Reserve encompasses around 93,000 acres of land zoned for farming, land conservation, and open space.
There are an estimated 500 farms in the reserve which attract produce enthusiasts to pick their own fruit and shop at local markets for farm-raised meat and fresh vegetables. To show the importance of preserving these resources, Heron points out that historically there were 600 dairy farms in Montgomery County, but now there are just two.
Emerging from COVID-19 restrictions three years ago, she started cooking with local produce and finding ways to educate her friends and neighbors about crafting delicious meals using the produce coming from the reserve.
Today, her thriving business provides full-service catering for a range of events, from small family Thanksgiving dinners to a recent 200 person party honoring women entrepreneurs hosted by Potomac Lifestyle Magazine. Her approach has resulted in dozens of creative farm-fresh recipes.
“What’s unique about Foodies Farms and Friends is our belief in cooking things from scratch and using fresh, seasonal produce and other ingredients. Not taking the easy way out sets us apart from many other caterers,” Heron says. “It truly comes down to listening to what each client wants.”
This means that when watermelons come into season, Heron and Chef Ruben Reyes create appetizers with little circles of the juicy fruit, topped with whipped feta cheese, a balsamic glaze, and a sprig of fresh dill. It’s a true crowd pleaser.
“It’s gourmet, but it also works well because not everything we create has to be super complicated. The fresh ingredients speak for themselves,” she says. “You eat with your eyes, so I want everything to be fresh, top-quality, and look and taste delicious.”
Other favorite items served at her memorable parties include lamb kofta, made from grass-fed ground lamb sourced from Deere Valley Farm Market, cheese empanadas, and mac and
cheese made with cheese from the local Brown Cow Creamery and Asian-style sirloin steak, from local meat producer Rocklands Farm, with pickled daikon radish and ginger soy dressing on endive.
Meat aficionados can enjoy a slowcooked smoked grass-fed brisket cooked with homemade BBQ sauce while veggie lovers can indulge in beautiful multi-colored salads, and tasty sweet potato and black bean burgers. Heron’s desserts include mouth-watering chocolate brownies, strawberry-white chocolate blondies, and fresh local strawberries.
In addition to weddings and parties of all sizes, Foodie Farms and Friends hosts events in Washington D.C., Potomac, Rockville, Bethesda, and the surrounding suburbs for groups including the Bethesda Chamber of Commerce and the Sugarloaf Citizens Association. Guests from all over enjoy Heron’s farm-to-table feasts highlighting produce from the Agricultural Reserve.
Foodies Farms and Friends also offers unique group cooking classes, and cooking demos, to make jellies, preserves, and veggies in its own kitchen in Potomac, on farms, and at people’s homes.
The catering company also accommodates severe food allergies, vegan diets, and other dietary restrictions. At a recent event, Heron personally called each guest who had dietary concerns to discuss provisions and happily prepared several scrumptious items so they could comfortably attend the party.
“We heard from those guests that they never come to group functions because they feel overly hampered by their allergies,” she says. “It’s all about us listening to what our client needs and thinking outside the box. Together we can come up with more innovative ideas and options.”
Heron’s intention in sourcing and preparing food for small parties and large events is crystal clear: “I have always been struck by how food brings people together.”
“What I love about our events is that our well-prepared, high-quality food creates such a positive environment,” she says. “I strongly believe that good food brings out the best in people!”

Ready to sample authentic French cooking without the hassle of driving into D.C. or the stress of searching for a parking place in Bethesda? Then consider Laperaux- The Journeymanchef’s French Bistro, a gem of a restaurant located on the border of Gaithersburg and Germantown in Cloppers Mill Plaza.
As its full name implies, Laperaux is a bistro. In the words of Gregory Webb, Laperaux’s chef and owner, “a bistro is not fine dining but a real commitment to the classic executions of French cuisine.” Bistros offer French favorites such as steak frites, coq au vin, French onion soup, and steak aux poivre. Across France, bistros are traditionally family restaurants serving lunch and dinner with a break between so the chef can go to the markets before dinner services.
Laperaux differs from the traditional bistro model in several aspects: although it closes the main dining room at 3 p.m. and doesn’t resume seating again until 5 p.m., ‘Louie’s Bar’ opens at 3 p.m. to provide continuous dining options through the entire day. The bistro also features a jazz pianist Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights to add to the lively yet relaxed atmosphere.
Patrons of Laperaux can opt to sit outside in a patio space with 20 seats, indoors in the dining room (which has an open kitchen) with 60 seats, or at the quieter bar just three steps off the main room. It offers a progressive French wine list and guests who come with their own bottles of wine can have a server decant it for them for a small corkage fee. Sunday brunch is served once a month or so, usually celebrating a festive holiday.
Webb has decades of experience as a chef. He started at 18 apprenticing for a well-known French chef in Westport, Connecticut. He studied at George Washington University and stayed in Washington through most of the 1980’s. He subsequently worked in New Orleans, Boston, New York, and Mexico City, and even owned his own restaurant in Houston. He worked in New York City as a corporate chef before moving his family to Gaithersburg in 2009. Most recently, before starting Laperaux in February of 2023, he was chef of the Paladar Latin Restaurant in Gaithersburg, MD.
Over the course of his career, Webb has made a point of studying classic cookbooks teaching the French culinary repertoire, including legendary chef Auguste Escoffier’s classic Le Guide Culinaire. He has become so adept at cooking French cuisine that many diners have asked to meet “the Frenchman in the kitchen.”
Webb is a master chef who is proud that he and his team cook everything served at the bistro from scratch. This includes cutting their own fish, grinding their own burgers, and making everything from pâté maison to fresh whipped chocolate mousse – never using mixes of any kind. And, if a visitor asks for a special dish not on the menu, such as the Potomac couple originally from Lyon, France who requested their usual New Year’s Eve dish of quenelles of pike, he can usually recreate it on request.
The chef takes food very seriously. He goes to the market four times a week, allowing him the opportunity to provide new menu options while also supporting local independent suppliers. Each week Webb drives to farmer’s markets as far as Jessup, Maryland, and Chantilly, Virginia, to source the freshest produce, fish, and dairy products for his weekly menus.
Laperaux opened in February of 2023 and has gradually gained a faithful group of returning patrons, many frequently driving from Frederick, Olney, Bethesda, and Potomac. Jennifer Edwards, a regular, says “Laperaux has the best French onion soup I’ve ever had.” Her friend Cheryl Dembroski adds: “My favorite is the steak frites. Plus we love the atmosphere – you can tell the chef really cares.”
Laperaux is also a family affair, with Webb’s wife Heather helping out with marketing and their two sons, 13 and 15, working at the restaurant two days a week.

Support Judith Lese’s Mission for Breast Cancer Awareness
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE
Judith Lese learned a difficult lesson about the major importance of everyone understanding their breast health. After feeling excruciating pain in her breasts, Lese’s doctor, not feeling a lump, advised her to take pain medicine and wait a week to see if the pain disappeared. The doctor also ordered a mammogram.
Lese was diagnosed with breast cancer, resulting in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. The pain, her breast surgeon advised, was the tumor pulling on the tissue. “I was extremely proactive in advocating for myself and I urge everyone else to do so,” she says.
In 2003, as a result of her personal experience, Lese started her impactful Silver Springbased grassroots nonprofit organization, The Judith A. Lese Breast Cancer Foundation.
Her goals: to help others and their families gain vital healthcare knowledge; to support and promote research; and to become familiar with resources for breast healthcare opportunities and cutting-edge treatment. The foundation’s annual mailing consistently provides informative educational material.
Now 77 years-old, Lese’s visionary goals, supported by two major fundraising events in October, “continue to provide funds predominantly for research, and also for education and medical equipment.” She appreciates that her advocacy has always Involved her loving husband of more than 50 years, Laurence Lese.
The nonprofit’s two major events are the Annual Fundraiser Dinner Banquet at Maggiano’s Little Italy in Washington, D.C. on October 9, and the Annual Walk to Win the Battle Against Breast Cancer at the Capital Crescent Trail in Bethesda on October 27.
Early on, Lese wanted to design a logo to personify her experience. Those images represent “tears” and stretched arms to show “hugs.” These emotions permeate life from the initial diagnosis to recovery and cure. “In the beginning, tears just fall and hugs insulate. And at the end of one’s medical treatments – tears are of joy, accomplishment, achieving a goal – completing treatments – and hugs feel so good to verify, ‘I did it! Yes, I am still here; still alive to move on. I’m a survivor!’”
While October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lese wants everyone – locally, nationally, and internationally – to care about the important mission 24/7, 12 months a year.
She is proud that 100 percent of the foundation’s funds are disbursed to breast cancer research institutions and various other impactful projects.
“I am extremely pleased that the major focus of the money that we have provided during the past 20 years has been utilized for selected breast cancer research, and for seed money and funds to the Sullivan Breast Center, towards equipment and a geneticist position. In past years, it has contributed to funds helping the uninsured and underserved.” Lese emphasizes that “with research, we can bring about longevity and cures.”
The former teacher of 49 years (48 in Montgomery County Public Schools), retired in 2022, but has remained a nurturer. She always worked “to help children learn that they can become very successful with their educational and personal growth.” Lese taught students that no matter the challenges or difficult situations in their lives, they should strive to do their best, and persevere through difficult times, always reaching towards support services when help is needed.
Among the local cancer centers that have benefitted from The Judith Lese Foundation are the Sullivan Breast Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital, and the Kimmel Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Medical Center for breast cancer research; as well as breast cancer research and clinical trials at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine, the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle.
Lese is involved in designating funds to specifically related breast cancer research issues and researchers.
“In the beginning, I told my doctors that I wish I knew more,” she says. “They continued not only to support me, but they were also generous to the Foundation; by providing their commitment, invaluable assistance, and participation on the Foundation’s Medical Advisory Board.”
Lese’s vision is to grow her foundation so she can continue to contribute more in the pursuit of education and cure for breast cancer. “Since education, not health care, is my vocation, I knew that I couldn’t go to medical school to pursue this,” she says. “But I felt compelled to do whatever I could to help save other people’s lives.”

Bao Bei’s most popular staple is their Bao Bei Bao, a slow-braised pork belly inside of a handmade bun, topped with pickled mustard, peanut sugar and cilantro, a recipe Hsieh learned from his family, and has “perfected with every repetition.”
Bao Bei has recently upgraded their menu with an almond tofu, which Hsieh calls a “nostalgic dessert.” More offerings are in the works to satisfy the demand of curious newcomers and devoted fans, who appreciate an unstuffy approach to modern day dining.

In 1810, Oktoberfest, one of the biggest festivals in the world, began as a wedding celebration for Bavarian Crown Prince Louis and Princess Therese in Munich. The uplifting event featured horse races and attracted large crowds, leading to traditions and immense popularity. The joyous event is often called d’Wiesn, after the colloquial name for the word fairgrounds – a place where the festivities took place.
Today, keeping with the theme of a huge autumn party, Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest, featuring a beer festival and a traveling carnival, and is held annually in Munich, Bavaria, from mid-or-late-September to the first Sunday in October.
A major attraction worldwide, Oktoberfest in Munich attracts more than six million national and international visitors for one massive fall party. Today, Oktoberfest is a huge day and night event that is celebrated far and wide with non-stop entertainment, music, traditional food, and beer, amid other lively activities and a myriad of memorable events.
The German International School Washington D.C. has long maintained a tradition of celebrating Oktoberfest. For 15 years, the school has proudly hosted the 5K Oktoberfest Run, blending the excitement of a race with the festive spirit of the season. With a backdrop of autumn leaves bursting into a rainbow of plum, orange, red, yellow, and gold hues on a crisp fall day, this event brings the community together to celebrate German culture, health, and camaraderie. This year’s run will take place on September 28, on the school’s scenic campus located at 8617 Chateau Drive in Potomac, MD. Participants will enjoy a beautiful race course followed by an Oktoberfest celebration featuring traditional German fare, refreshing beverages, and a variety of entertainment.
“The event emphasizes not just fitness but also cultural exchange and community spirit,” says Brunela Wong, Event and Community Engagement Coordinator for the German International School. “Join us for a day of fun, fitness, and tradition. We look forward to celebrating with you!”
The 5K Oktoberfest Run has deep roots at the school, growing into a beloved tradition that draws families, alumni, and friends from across the D.C. area. “Our run celebrates the school’s German heritage while welcoming people from all backgrounds to enjoy a traditional German festival,” Wong adds.

A Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in North Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Brent Faulkner is an expert in breast reconstruction surgery and takes great pride in establishing life-long relationships with his patients who are undergoing tremendous challenges. “I strive to be the best possible resource for my patients as I consider all their needs,” he says. “Their positive feedback tells me I have established a great relationship with each of them.” His practice Faulkner Plastic Surgery is affiliated with several Montgomery County hospitals.“Whether they have an outstanding result, or we help them navigate a complication, each patient’s journey is important to me.”
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Faulkner offers the following tips:
• Women and girls, as well as men, should commit to regular breast self-examinations, including mammograms when appropriate. This is the key to early detection of abnormalities and can lead to timely intervention and better outcomes. “Ultimately, this can help reduce the risk of serious health issues such as breast cancer.”
• Before a patient comes in for a consultation, it’s helpful to gather and bring relevant medical records. “This gives doctors as much information as possible about current medications, allergies, and previous surgeries.”
• Patients should know their upcoming schedule so that they might better prepare for the post-operative time period.
• It’s helpful for patients to bring a support person to the consultation to help them navigate overwhelming amounts of information, take notes, ask questions, and offer a different perspective. “During the consultation, I take time to answer patient questions,” Dr. Faulkner says, “I’m always ready to discuss preferences and expectations.”
Breast cancer reconstruction procedures post-mastectomy vary and there are several methods and techniques. He explains that the choice depends on preference and medical considerations. Options include: 1). implant-based reconstruction, 2). own tissue-based reconstruction, or 3). a combination implant/tissue reconstruction. If needed, patients also may undergo nipple/areola reconstruction and/or revisions.
Patients generally express seven major areas of concern related to breast reconstruction surgery:
1. Will the breast look natural and symmetrical post-surgery?
2. What are the possible complications?
3. What is the recovery process like in terms of pain management and limitations?
4. What should be expected in terms of the emotional impact such as body image and the psychological effects of cancer?
5. What are the long-term considerations such as the longevity of implants and future procedures?
6. What are the financial considerations, including the cost of surgeries and insurance coverage?
7. Are support groups and counseling available?
Much of the rapport Dr. Faulkner has with his patients starts with his deeply caring bedside manner. “It’s important to have enough time to talk to each of my patients about their individual concerns. Every patient should feel listened to and know that they are supported,” he explains.
“I take time to talk with my patients about all of the related issues,” Dr. Faulkner says. “It’s important for me to support patients and serve as a resource for them throughout the entire reconstruction process.”

BEHIND THE RISE OF BLOSSOM BEVERAGES: CREATING COMMUNITY WITH READY-TO-DRINK ESPRESSO MARTINIS
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NINA PALAZZOLO
When you bring four hard-working and creative coffee-loving entrepreneurs together to launch an innovative new product, the result is pure mixology magic and the fastest-growing cocktail brand founded in Washington, D.C.
That’s exactly what happened with the two-year-old District-based Blossom Beverages. It’s the first locally produced ready-to-drink espresso martini that has continued to take the beverage industry by storm.
Blossom was born when creative local restaurateurs, mixologists, and entrepreneurs decided it was time to collaborate in a unique way to create a “fun, vibrant, and instantly drinkable” bar-grade espresso martini in a can.
The “special sauce,” according to the company’s founder David Jack, and best pals and business partners Stephen Kae, Ade Omitowoju, and Sarah Leonard, is bringing together a team that Jack calls an “affectionate, fun-loving, smart, and tenacious group of people.” They’re all dedicated to making their collective mark on the city with unique craft cocktails. Blossom is now sold in retail stores including Giant, Safeway, and Nationals Park.
“In November 2022, we launched at an outdoor, music-fueled pop-up at Union Market, and honestly didn’t know if we would sell one can,” Jack explains. “When we sold out our entire truckload of 6,000 Blossom Espresso Martini cans at that one event, we knew that we created something incredibly special and rare.”
The goal was to create a top-notch espresso martini in a can that dials up the fun with real spirits and real coffee. The initial well-received recipe is a classic cocktail with a vodka base, hints of vanilla, spice, and chocolate that finishes with a punch from La Colombe espresso.
“We plan to create cocktail-bar-level products and just have fun with it,” Jack says. “It’s a delicious and refreshing beverage with a burst of caffeine and booze to share with friends, and have great conversation, and
as a result, a connection blossoms over an award-winning espresso martini. Our sleek cans also have vibrant colors to make them pop.”
Partner and investor Stephen Kae couldn’t be happier with the cocktails that Blossom Beverages has brought to life with its high-quality ingredients. “It took r years of tasting, testing, and perfecting,” he notes.
“We created Blossom not just for espresso martini lovers, but also for those who have never tasted an espresso martini,” says Kae. “It’s all about making memorable moments during the holidays, at kickbacks, parties, concerts, music festivals, sports arenas, bars, and beyond.”
The company is going big on fruit flavors with its new cherry-flavored martini cocktail. Blossom’s Dark Cherry Espresso Martini is a full-forward compilation of Peruvian coffee, real dark cherry juice with chocolate, vanilla, and vodka in a 8.4-ounce can. The drink is currently available in grocery stores, liquor stores, entertainment and sports arenas, and online.
Blossom Beverages’ first successful market was Washington, D.C. Now, the classic cocktails are coming to Montgomery County, MD as a second market, and its third much-anticipated launch will be in New York later this year.
“We put a great deal of passion into the production of our ready-to-drink classic cocktails. Espresso martinis have transitioned from a trend to a tradition, just like our morning coffee, only now it kicks off unforgettable nights on the town,” says Jack.
“We built Blossom Beverages first as a community, which is about these blossoming friendships and connections,” he adds. “Espresso and booze get the blood flowing, and it’s all about making your life blossom!”
