FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME

JB BLAIR, ASSISTANT COACH OF THE WASHINGTON WIZARDS, IS A PROUD MENTOR
Life often has memorable full-circle moments.
Just ask Washington Wizards Assistant Coach Joseph “JB” Blair. He’s heading overseas to watch his middle son, Joe, shoot hoops in Varese, Italy, continuing a strong family tradition of playing basketball in Europe.
Best known for his creative moves with the Harlem Globetrotters and as a former player for

“TAKING GREAT CARE WITH MY DIET, HABITS, AND BODY ARE ALL PART OF WORKING ON MY INCREASED QUALITY OF LIFE.”
the University of Arizona Wildcats, Blair is eager to support his three sons—Jaeson, 20, Joseph, 23, and Jordan, 30. He looks forward to rekindling friendships fostered during the six years he played in Italy at about the same age as Joe.
FAMILY IS FOREMOST
“My family is made up of major basketball fans. I enjoy getting on the court, playing against them, and working out with them,” Blair says. “We lift weights and run together. I enjoy testing myself against my kids.”

The self-proclaimed “vegan coach” known for his clean lifestyle, is proud to serve as a mentor, both on and off the court.
Blair explains that his intensive daily lifting and cardio workout are an invaluable part of his life.” “Taking great care with my diet, habits, and body are all part of working on my increased quality of life as well as longevity.”
THE ROAD TO PRO SPORTS
When it comes to finding a path to professional sports, he advises young people “to find a love for the game and pursue it

for the right reasons. If you don’t love it; you’ll never want to make the sacrifices or be great at it.”
Blair advises athletes to focus on their “work ethic, talent, skill set, and giving it their best. So, work every single day to be the best at it, and don’t set a ceiling on your goals.”
To understand Blair is to know the importance he places on giving back to the communities where he lives and works. As a result, he’s reviving his coed leadership and social-skills basketball camp, for 12 to 18-year-olds, which he successfully ran for 20 years in Southern Arizona.
“I’m bringing it back the weekend of July 26, and proudly naming it after my mother, Judith Blair.” During that same time, he will work with the city of Tucson to raise money to refurbish one of the city park’s basketball courts, which will also be named in memory of his beloved mother.
Blair says he appreciates living in greater Washington metropolitan area, which has an abundance of history, local culture, and attractions.
“I enjoy the walkability of the city and going on wilderness hikes when I have breaks,” Blair says. “During a recent Saturday, I spent time at a Kite Festival, a Cherry Blossom Festival, and two local museums. I love heading to a neighborhood park. It would take anyone a lifetime to experience all of them.”
Looking to the future, Blair exercises his deep-seated faith. “I am intentional daily about recognizing blessings and how I can share them with others,” he explains. “I always want to be growing; physically, mentally, and spiritually so that I’m prepared for what’s coming next.”

BETHESDA, MD, ‘SHARK TANK’ WINNER REVOLUTIONIZES MEN’S FASHION

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Who says dressing professionally has to be uncomfortable? Most men hate how dress shirts bunch up under sweaters, but maintaining a professional look sometimes requires sacrifice. Unless you’re a creative entrepreneur like Justin Baer. During COVID, he decided to design a stretchy, comfortable polo with a formal collar suitable for neckties or for staying unbuttoned. It worked out better than he could have imagined.
Collars & Co. began with a test production of 300 luxury men’s shirts, and has since grown into a national phenomenon that sells 25,000 units per month. To meet the challenges of succeeding in the fashion industry, Baer has built the company slowly and strategically. He matches his creativity with a variety of unique promotional opportunities, including TikTok videos produced by his daughters and a triumphant appearance on ABC’s “Shark Tank” that resulted in Mark Cuban becoming an investor and mentor. “I don’t think you can succeed in fashion without thinking outside the box,” Baer says. He credits the success of Collars & Co. to trying things other people wouldn’t even dream of.
Baer is a Maryland native who lives in Bethesda with his wife and two daughters. He has high hopes that the company is on a path to become the next major brand in the United States. They now offer four styles of the original polo, as well as lines of sweaters,
“I don’t think you can succeed in fashion without thinking outside the box.”
sneakers, and even shirts for women. “All the professionals I work with love that they can seamlessly transition from the workday to a soccer game and then go on to a night out to dinner,” Baer says. Collars & Co. now has three physical locations around the country, and Justin has big plans to build on its success. “I see Collars & Co. changing the way we think about clothing,” he says.

A WONDERFUL RIDE

Maurice Slaughter Celebrates 25 Years of Bayside Harley-Davidson’s Motorcycle Magic
ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE PHOTOGRAPHY BY MALLORY JARRELLDevoted family man Maurice Slaughter says that his HarleyDavidson dealerships, including Bayside Harley-Davidson, are unlike any of his other business endeavors because his customers are his close friends with whom he frequently enjoys weekend rides.

“We are all about customer focus. I have a beautiful customer base and it is unlike any other business.”
“Customer service is even more important today than it has ever been,” says Slaughter. “It is the key to business happiness and growth. What makes us stand out among our competitors is the fact that we can sense all of our customers’ needs and wants.”
A former Florida Toyota car dealer and Burger King franchise owner in Kansas City, Missouri, Slaughter entered the D.C. Metro motorcycle market 25 years ago selling three top brands BMW, Ducati, and Harley-Davidson. Proudly, he has excelled in every business endeavor he has embarked on.
“My daughter, Tiara, quips that I have been in grease my entire life; from car grease, to burger grease to motorcycle grease,” Slaughter jokes. “I am an extremely grateful family and businessman; for me, it’s all been a wonderful ride!”
He owns five dealerships; Bayside Harley-Davidson and Bayside Ducati in Portsmouth, Virginia, Outer Banks Harley-Davidson in Harbinger, North Carolina; Nags
Head Harley-Davidson in Nags Head, North Carolina; First Flight Harley-Davidson in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and District Harley-Davidson of Gaithersburg, and District Ducati in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
With quality always at the forefront, Slaughter has received four “Top 10” and 8 “Top 100” awards from Dealer News recognizing his dealerships as the best power sports organization in North America. In addition, Bayside Harley-Davidson was the recipient of the Portsmouth Small Business of the Year Award in 2010, and Bayside is currently rated as the Best Service Department in North America.
Slaughter attributes his longevity in the motorcycle business to high-quality customer service. “We are all about customer focus. I have a beautiful customer base and it is unlike any other business,” he explains.
Whether someone is looking to purchase his or her first or 10th motorcycle, Slaughter advises that everyone takes the Rider’s Academy Class to learn a

wide range of skills from how to make sure your helmet properly fits to why sleeves should be longer on your coat.
Getting into motorcycle sales began with a business decision, and turned into a true passion, says Slaughter. But his first lesson in owning and operating a successful Harley-Davidson dealership was learning how tight-knit the community is.
“In the car business you sell a customer a car and you don’t see them again for three years,” he explained. “But here you sell someone a bike and they are back at our dealership fixing coffee the next morning. Becoming such a bike enthusiast, and part of an extended family, was a positive outcome,” Slaughter says.
“This is really unlike any other business because of the joy of recreational riding and high level of camaraderie; my customers are my riding friends and we go out on pleasant rides together on weekends.”
Not only do his dealerships sell and service motorcycles, but he also offers classes that his customers and his entire family are eager to take. “My wife , and daughter ride, my son takes longer rides, and I take a lot of charity rides with my customers.”
“You want a dealer who is going to spend quality time with you, answer all of your questions, and be enthusiastic enough to have discussions with you. Look for a place that is also going to be able to service your bike, and add different pipes, sound, or a new seat. You want this all-in-one place.”
Slaughter encourages customers to take the bikes for a test ride before they make a purchase. “You get a chance before you purchase a bike to find the lifestyle that fits you, and it is all under one roof!
The success of Slaughter’s motorcycle dealerships starts with his hiring process. He seeks out employees who are positive role models and enjoy working with the public.
“I want someone who can talk to a six-year-old or a 66-year-old and everyone in between,” he explains “I always want to hire people who are completely engaged and listen to our customers. I talk to six prospective employees at the same time during the hiring process and I look for that indelible spirit that brings the most enthusiasm to the party.”
“I talk to six prospective employees at once during the hiring process and I look for that indelible spirit that brings the most enthusiasm to the party.”

Slaughter is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of MS Family Enterprises, which is built on family values, and President of a real estate management company, FNO, Inc., that specializes in restoring and managing historic properties in his native New Orleans.
Websites: districthd.com
districtducati.com districtbmw.com
For Slaughter, his wife, Cynthia, and their grown children, Will and Tiara, being there for one another is everything, and the closeknit family readily enjoy frequent adventures both on land and at sea. “Living so close to Chesapeake Bay, I became involved in boating. I enjoy exploring hidden gems in Annapolis, St. Michaels, and the Caribbean.”
While Slaughter is an extremely hard worker, and always has been, his definition of success is
finding happiness within his family. “You have to enjoy the entire ride,” he says.. “You can’t do this for decades to chase a dollar.”
In the future, he anticipates purchasing one or more dealerships, most likely next year, and hiring and training a great staff to ensure continued success.
He also hopes to pass on life lessons to his two-year-old grandson, Chase, the newest addition to the family. “I want my grandson to know that honesty and integrity are foremost in life; you can never bend or afford to lose this value. We love spending quality time together, no matter what we do as a family it feels special to us, and I will never lose sight of this.”

Team Player
ARTICLE BY ERICA MOODY PHOTOGRAPHY BY CBS/MARY KOUWWhen James Brown was cut by the Atlanta Hawks during training camp, he vowed to always work as hard to stay on top as he did to get to the top. Fast forward 30-plus years and the Bethesda native is recognized the world over. He’s studio host of “The NFL Today” on CBS Sports, a special correspondent with CBS News, and was a longtime co-host of the top-ranking pregame show, “Fox NFL Sunday” — but despite his success, Brown (“JB” to friends) says his career is not his vocation, but his “avocation.”
“My vocation,” Brown says, “is about being a man of God and wanting to contribute to efforts like this.” The efforts he’s referring to are those of the 2nd Century Project, a mission to restore the historic Scotland A.M.E.
SPORTSCASTER
JAMES BROWN ON WINNING AT THE
GAME OF LIFE.

“MORGAN WOOTTEN SAID THE PLAYERS PLAYING FOR HIM HAD TO HAVE FOUR PRIORITIES: GOD FIRST, FAMILY SECOND, SCHOOL THIRD, THEN YOUR SPORT.”
Zion Church which was built in 1924 by Black congregants in Potomac and nearly destroyed by a fire in 2019. It’s the first thing he mentions on my call with him, enthusiastic to get the word out. Along with an inclusive group of other local leaders including Mitchell Rales, the project aims to not only rescue the building but to protect it from future flooding and expand it to serve the needs of the community.
Brown credits his parents, John and Mary Ann Brown, for the foundation of excellence and hard work they laid out for him, all rooted in their Christian faith. “They both had PhDs, drive and determination,” he says. Brown says his DeMatha Catholic High School basketball coach Morgan Wootten built on this foundation. “Morgan Wootten said the players playing for him had to have four priorities: God first, family second, school third, then your sport,” Brown says.
In his ministry work, Brown imparts wisdom much like a coach would, with refreshing frankness, deep knowledge, and encouraging words. In the football off-season when he has some downtime, the Harvard graduate speaks at churches across the country, as well as at executive leadership conferences. In July, he’ll be presenting alongside faith leaders Dr. David Jeremiah and Tony Dungy on a Turning Point Ministries Alaska cruise conference.
Brown’s path is proof that rejection can point you to your life’s purpose. As his star rose, Brown credits scripture for keeping him levelheaded. “Once you start to get cocky and prideful, that begins the precipitous slide down the abyss,” he says. He points to three guiding words from Ephesians 4:16: “Every joint supplies.” One takeaway? “Everybody's blessed with a gift, but the gift is only meaningful in as much as it is used for the benefit of the whole.”

ALLAN SIDLEY IS A STAND-UP DAD

ARTICLE BY DEBRA WALLACE
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

After 10 years of delighting audiences around the DMV, Allan Sidley is embracing his newest challenge -- making his 17-month-old daughter Sunny laugh.
Sidley is a stand-up comedian, improviser, producer, and author of the 178-page bestselling humor book Daddy Issues: A Fatherless Comedian’s Original Jokes Although Sidley’s own father passed away before he was one year old, as an adult comic, he quickly mastered the “dad joke” and wrote over 600 of them.
Father’s Day has historically been a dark holiday for him, but he’s recently embraced it with the release of his book
and hour-long stand-up special, available on YouTube. For Sidley, every day is Father’s Day, since he and his daughter continually try to make each other laugh.
“I’ve experienced a lot of great audiences in my career who love my comedy, but her giggle takes the cake by a mile,” he said. “That smile, with her teeth showing, melts my heart every time.”
The Vienna, Virginia native, who is actively pursuing local and national club, corporate, college, and charity gigs, still considers himself a student of the comedy craft, specializing in sharp writing with a well-timed delivery. “I had to change up my formula with her, realizing I’m not above playing peekaboo and using silly animal voices to make her laugh.”

Entertaining her isn’t always the easiest gig. It is Sidley’s job during fussy times to engage his daughter, and he draws comparisons to performing at a comedy club. “When I’m doing a feature spot it’s basically the same -- entertaining a bunch of inebriated babies while they wait for the main course.”
Sidley acknowledges that fatherhood isn’t just about the laughs. After a difficult start, he feels as though he’s hit his stride. “It’s about spending quality time together, experiencing the world through her perspective, and sharing those joys and frustrations.”
As she gets older, he hopes his daughter will put up with his ‘dad jokes’ and appreciate good comedy. For Sidley, “her laugh will always be the best one.”
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT01.
Get fit for equipment.
If you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.
Perfecting Your Golf Swing

02.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
03.
Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.

ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED MAKE THIS FATHER’S DAY ONE HE’LL REMEMBER
Fathers play a significant role in their kids’ lives. They’re essential role models, influence children’s self-esteem and school performance, and make great coaches and fun-loving playmates. Once kids have grown and aged, fathers make great friends, confidants, and are there to lend a hand.
With Father’s Day approaching, avoid last-minute scrambling to find the perfect way to show your love and appreciation. Consider these ideas and activities from local Dads.
Video Surprise – Make a “World’s Best Dad” video he’ll treasure for years to come. Put on your brainstorming cap for your own ideas, or try some of these ideas for your video. Share special memories of your dad, sing to him, read him a poem, or do skits. Get the whole family involved and conduct interviews with each other with Dad as the main topic. Don’t forget your props such as a banner or collection of his prized possessions, including sports trophies or

equipment, to add a personal touch. Most importantly, be sure to let him know just how much he means to you.
King for the Day – It isn’t every day your dad gets waited on hand and foot. So offer to be his loyal servant for the day. Bring him coffee and toast in bed; fetch his newspaper and a copy of Potomac Lifestyle Magazine; lay out his clothes, bath towel, and mat; be host or hostess and serve him beverages and snacks; clean up after him and anything else to give him the royal treatment.
Memories of Dad – Buy a scrapbook, and create a record of memories about you and your dad. Include photos of special outings, events, and holidays you’ve had together. Also include other memorabilia such as concert or sporting event ticket stubs, postcards, and brochures. Next to each photo or item, describe your memories of those special times with him.

A Man to Remember – Get your creative juices flowing, and write a poem for your dad. You don’t need to be a poet to come up with a few thoughtful words to express how much he means to you. Describe the impact he’s had on your life, how he’s helped shape the person you are today, and what he means to you. Then print it on stationery, matte, and frame it.
Musical Moment – Take your father to see his favorite band or performing artist, head to a jazz or blues festival, or pack up some lawn chairs, and enjoy a local concert-in-the-park.
World’s Greatest – Let your dad know he’s valued 365 days a year! Give him a unique Father’s Day find at the Potomac French Market or Sprinkles Ice Cream Shop.
Sports Buff’s Surprise – Take your dad for a sporting good time. Play a game of golf at Falls Road, pickleball at the Potomac Community Center, or basketball, go fishing, or walk the Billy Goat Trail. If being a spectator is more his thing, buy tickets to his favorite sporting events such as a Washington Nationals baseball game, or soccer game, a boxing match, or the Sully Antique Car Show in Chantilly VA.
Weekend Getaway – Get in touch with nature and each other on a camping trip for two. Either rough it in a tent or rent a minicabin at a state park. Spend your weekend hiking, sightseeing, fishing, boating, playing cards, and taking it easy together at Little Bennett Campground.
Father’s Day Feast - As the old adage goes, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So treat Dad to a mouth-watering dish at Mission Barbeque in Rockville. Fix him his favorite: steak, ribs, chicken, burgers, or chops for starters. Don’t forget the grilled potatoes or squash, garlic bread or rolls, fresh green beans or asparagus, sweet corn, potato salad, and last but not least, his favorite dessert.
Treat Him Like a King – What better way to show your appreciation for all his hard work than to indulge him? Give your father a gift certificate for a professional massage, which will be sure to please.
Take a Stroll – Enjoy a peaceful walk in the park or the country together. Better yet, gather your bikes or rollerblades, hit a scenic bike path of the Billy Goat Trails, and enjoy the fresh summer air.
Certificates of Appreciation – Show Dad you appreciate his hard work by returning the favor. Make coupons that say: “In appreciation for all that you do, Dad. Redeem this certificate for a hassle-free car wash by me!” Other favors include sweeping out the garage, mowing the lawn, or any other task he usually handles.
“Being a Dad is the best thing I’ve ever done and the kids are more 4 greatest accomplishments.”

is nothing better than spending quality time with the grandkids teaching them how to swim or catching a game at Orioles stadium”.

Bethesda Angler Catches Maryland State Record Rainbow Trout

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recognizes Jean-Philippe Lartigue of Bethesda as a new state record holder for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Nontidal Division. Lartigue caught a 17.44-pound rainbow trout February 10 in the section of Antietam Creek running through Devil’s Backbone County Park in Washington County.
Lartigue was fishing with a long, 12-foot crappie-style rod, spinning reel, eight-pound test monofilament line, a small split-shot weight, and a No. 8 hook baited with a natural worm when he hooked the massive rainbow trout.
Lartigue worked as a fisheries biologist consulting with governments in Africa before he retired and settled in Maryland, where he is an avid angler. Lartigue is French and originally from Morocco, where he learned from his father the European style of fishing natural baits with long rods for trout. The long rod helps to control the drift and presentation of natural baits in swift stream currents.
“I knew the fish was a very large trout, but I did not see how big it was at the beginning of the fight,” Lartigue said. “I finally saw the fish, and it made two very long runs to the opposite side of the creek and was hard to move. I also had to keep the fish away from some bridge abutments, which could have cut the line easily. . . . After a very long 30-minute fight, I was able to tire out the fish and grabbed it by the jaw with my fingers since I did not have a landing net large enough.”
Lartigue then slid the fish onto a rocky bank, cutting his finger in the process from the fish’s teeth.
The fish measured 32 inches long. Its weight was determined on a certified scale at Ernst’s Country Market in Clear Spring. DNR’s director of freshwater fisheries and hatcheries, John Mullican, confirmed the species.
The catch shatters the previous record of 14.2 pounds caught by Dave Schroyer on October 21, 1987.
“We are extremely impressed by the weight of the fish, which beats the old record by over 3 pounds, a record that many of us in the department thought would never be broken,” said Recreational Fisheries Outreach Coordinator Erik Zlokovitz.
The Department of Natural Resources maintains state records for sport fish in four divisions – Atlantic, Chesapeake, Nontidal, and Invasive. Anglers who think they have a potential record catch should download and complete a state record application and call 443-569-1398. The department recommends the fish be immersed in ice water to preserve its weight until an official can check, confirm, and certify it.
