Since its opening in 1891, Carnegie Hall has been known as one of the world’s most prestigious music venues, hosting a wide variety of amazing performers and memorable events. The hall has presented many world premieres, including George Gershwin in 1925, Benny Goodman and his orchestra in 1938, and Leonard Bernstein in 1943. The Beatles performed two concerts at Carnegie Hall in 1964. The students of the International School of Music can now claim to be part of this illustrious history.
On Saturday, March 25th at 1pm, thirty-four honors students from The International School of Music made their New York debuts at Carnegie’s famed Weill Recital Hall. The concert featured exciting, compelling and challenging repertoire – from classical favorites to contemporary works. Soloists and ensembles performed on various instruments including piano, violin, guitar, woodwinds, in addition to vocal performances. The audience was treated to dazzling performances of favorites such as Chopin’s Nocturnes and Fantaisie-Impromptu, Rachmaninoff’s Prelude, and pieces by Vivaldi and Kreisler. Less-often heard pieces included a double bass sonata and a guitar showpiece by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. Woodwind performers amazed the audience with nimble and entertaining pieces on flute and saxophone. Vocalists impressed the audience with their renditions of arias and art songs by Vaughan Williams, Tarelli, and Schubert, as well as modern Broadway classics like “Popular” from Wicked and “The Beauty Is” from The Light in the Piazza. The recital closed with two string and piano trios who were coached by the International School of Music faculty members. The student trios performed brilliant and charming
by Amy McCraryworks by Haydn and Mozart.
International School of Music’s founder and president, Inja Stanic, expressed her pride in the students’ hard work and dedication that led them to the stage at Carnegie Hall. “Our Honors Recitals are not just a chance for the students to showcase their talents but also an opportunity to prepare for future performances, bolster college applications, and learn valuable skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives,” she said. “Performing at Carnegie Hall is an amazing opportunity that will hopefully lead to bigger and better things in our students’ lives.”
Performing at Carnegie Hall encourages students to learn life lessons, such as focus, dedication, discipline, perseverance, and very hard work. These skills are easily transferable to all areas of academic study, making this program particularly appealing to high achievers hungry for challenges and passionate about what they do. The process of auditioning for the Honors Recital itself provides students with an incentive to improve their musical skills and promotes self-esteem, which can benefit them throughout their lives. “Preparing for this concert is motivating our students to do their
best, and will be something they remember forever,” Stanic said.
In addition to the annual Honors Recital, the International School of Music offers other performance opportunities for its students, including recitals at American University in Washington, D.C., the Kennedy Center, and Strathmore Mansion, in addition to ISM Ambassador Concerts in the local community.
International School of Music is one of Montgomery County’s finest music establishments, with two locations in Bethesda and Potomac serving nearly 2,000 students of all ages. Voted “Best for Music Instruction” by Washington Families for several years now, the International School of Music brings together a community of dedicated, experienced, world-renowned faculty to expand music education in the Washington Metropolitan area.

I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who just make life more rich and beautiful. So I'm sending a special shout out to Potomac Lifestyle staff who are Mother's, Creative Directors, Trina Cox and Monica Vidal, writers, Marie Robey-Wood, Erica Moody, Social Media coordinators Anicia Juarez, Jessica Rice thank you for all you do.
Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives. And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms. It’s not just the biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives - making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. That’s one of my favorite parts of this roleconnecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to Potomac women.
They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Sincerely,

Just when we thought the 2023 would be a fairly quiet year for estate tax planning, the President’s Budget for Fiscal Year 2024 has thrown estate planning on the chopping block again. With numerous of attempts to restrict our prominent tax planning techniques from reducing the annual tax-free gifting exemption of $17,000 per person for 2023 to an annual maximum gift of $50,000 to attacking the use of Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts, and practically destroying the use of Grantor Trusts at all for estate planning. While there is still time for lots of horse trading on Capitol Hill, for those waiting until 2025 to address the Estate Planning Gift Plans before the Federal Exemption goes back down this a reminder that waiting can cost your family significant tax dollars –review your estate plan now!

Local motorcycle clubs serve a growing demographic of female riders and District Harley Davidson is here for it.
People may think the stereotypical motorcycle owner is a middle-aged man with cash and pavement to burn. But don’t be surprised by the rapid increase in the number of female riders. The demand for motorcycles among them is growing, with women accounting for an estimated 19 percent of Harley Davidson owners in 2019. This is an increase of 9% in the past ten years. This comes as no surprise to Eccentryk Lady Ryderz founder Anita Holton, who launched the Severn-based all-female motorcycle group twenty years ago and has since seen it grow to include two riding clubs (one in Severn and one in Frederick) in addition to a social club.
“At that time, in 2003, there weren’t a lot of female clubs,” Holton says. She got into riding because her brothers were into it. When her brother Ted tragically died in his sleep at the age of 28, Holton felt inspired to take up the passion for motorcycles that he’d passed on to her. But when she tried to join a men’s group, it didn’t go so well.
“That was when I learned I didn’t have a clue what the motorcycle community was,” Holton laughs. “I was walking into a man’s world.” So she created a new version, her own version. It would be a club for women motorcycle enthusiasts, providing sisterhood and chances to give back to the community, in addition to bike advice and opportunities to ride as a group. It was the first all-female motorcycle club in Anne Arundel County.
Holton chose the name of the group because of how unique she knew it would be. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes
to women riders—from the bikes they want to the rides they plan on taking, District Harley Davidson sales manager Randy Nulph agrees: “There’s no specific best bike for a woman. What I always ask is what kind of riding you’re planning on doing because each bike is centralized towards that. If a woman is getting into riding and she wants to learn, you want to get her on something a little lighter. But I know plenty of women that ride the big bikes.”
The lighter bike that many women choose as a starter bike is the Iron 883. The classic bobber-style bike (meaning parts have been removed for riding ease and weight reduction) has been around since 1957. “Typically, when women are just getting into it they think because the Iron 883 is so light it’s going to be easy for them to maneuver on and learn on.”
After a year or so of riding, Nulph will often recommend trading up to a Softail Standard. Softail bikes are low-seated and often referred to as cruisers. “The Softail Standard has an 8-inch mini ape and is a classic softail ride,” Nulph says. “It’s light enough for you to maneuver through the city and it’s heavy enough for you to actually get on the highway and powerful enough for you to get up to speed.”
When they’ve been riding for a while and like to ride distance, though, Nulph says many women prefer the heavier bikes. He recommends the Street Glide; this is known as a “touring bike” and designed for long-distance trips. “Any woman can ride any bike as long as they’re tall enough and it fits their stature, because you can
adjust any bike to fit you,” he emphasizes. Holton can attest to the quality of a Street Glide—it’s the bike she rides, and it took her smoothly to California and back. It takes her on regular rides with her crew up and down the highways through Prince George’s County. She appreciates Harley Davidson for supporting Eccentryk’s community fundraising efforts, such as helping them host a fish fry in the Laurel Harley Davidson shop where she once worked in the comptroller’s office.
Charity work is one way women’s groups tend to differ from men’s motorcycle groups, Holton says. “Men will do charity, but there’s almost always a female behind it encouraging them. Men talking about getting the job done. Women get the job done.”
For Holton, who never had sisters growing up, her fellow Eccentryk riders, a diverse group of women from various backgrounds and walks of life, have become her family. “When I started this club, I wanted sisterhood. My mom had three boys and one girl. I never had the opportunity to really be around a bunch of females. And I enjoy their company. I enjoy that I can vent to my sister instead of calling my brother.” She even taught her daughter how to ride. “These ladies are mature, wise and know their opinions count. That is a factor in having a club that stays established because you need loyalty, commitment and dedication,” Holton says.
For his part, Nulph loves selling to the Eccentryk ladies: “They’re nice to work with and they know what they want.”
“MEN TALK ABOUT GETTING THE JOB DONE. WOMEN GET THE JOB DONE.”

Beyond the shoreline, The Breakers is just a pleasant walk away from the best parts of town, should you want to stretch your legs and enjoy the balmy weather en route to additional shopping, dining, and exploration. (If not, the resort offers complimentary transportation.)
Our favorite afternoon was spent by the adults-only pool, sipping on skinny piña coladas, but you can also reserve a private bungalow to have a quiet space to retreat to and enjoy being waited on hand and foot while catching rays and gazing out at the ocean.
ARTICLE BY JENNY HART PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE BREAKERSPalm Beach is the birthplace of true hospitality, and for true luxury, there’s no better option than The Breakers. Potomac Lifestyle recently hopped on an easy 2.5 hour flight from DC to this serene, gilded escape, and found that while it appeals to all audiences (couples and families abound!), The Breakers serves as a particularly perfect backdrop for a girlfriend getaway. Here is what we loved most about our stay – and what we think you will, too.
The Breakers gets its name from its enviable spot on Palm Beach, right where the waves break and crash into the sand. And while the entire island oozes glamour, this stretch of private beach is the main character. Nothing beats the simple splendor of keeping your balcony door open as you drift to sleep to the sounds of the sea – so trust us, booking an oceanfront room is a must.
When it was time to get our bodies moving, we opted to rent paddleboards. It was fun, easy, and safe, and the views of The Breakers and her beach from the water were stunning. There’s a wide variety of other watersports to choose from, too, including kayaking, sailing, scuba diving and snorkeling, and lessons available to teach guests how to master all of the above.
Wow, let us tell you: the food and beverage options here are an absolute delight. We took the “ladies who lunch” title extremely seriously on this trip, and did our best to eat and drink our way through The Breakers. One standout highlight was the crispy crab cakes at The Seafood Bar (would you expect anything less from some Maryland girls?), a yacht-themed restaurant overlooking the ocean with mirrored portholes, an open kitchen concept, and live aquarium-topped bar. The meat inside was so flavorful that no remoulade was needed.
We also loved dining out at Henry’s Palm Beach, one of the resort’s restaurants that is actually located offsite, at the Via Flagler plaza. It felt fresh and fun to be able to hit the town, but still have the convenience of charging our meals back to our rooms. We loved indulging in a wine flight as we nibbled on comfort food: the “Pigs in a Pretzel Dough Blanket” appetizer, served with a delectable warm pilsner cheese fondue, really hit the spot.
And, of course, there’s The Breakers’ famous Sunday brunch, known as one of the best in the country. If you can, visit during stone crab season, which is October to May. It’s a local favorite from the overflowing raw bar.
Staying at The Breakers will make you feel like American royalty; given that past regulars included the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Astors, alongside many U.S. presidents, it’s essentially true. It is humbling to learn about the resort’s impressive history – after taking a tour of the grounds, Potomac Lifestyle managing editor, Sarah Rezvani, said it made her enjoy and appreciate our visit all the more. There’s something special about The Breakers that’s difficult to put into words. Considering their slogan is “Once you stay, you’ll understand,” the next step truly is for you to experience it yourself!

What is Decorative Landscape Curbing?
Decorative Concrete Landscape Curbing is the last product you will need or want to keep your grass separate from your mulched landscaped beds.
How is it installed? By the piece?
No…we mix the concrete on-site creating the color you want and extrude it. Then it is hand finished to remove imperfections and either textured and stamped or stamped and carved depending on the look you want. Ok I must admit, it’s beautiful but how strong is it? It is extremely strong and durable. It gets its strength from the both the mix design and the fact it is one continuous piece of concrete from start to finish.
Let Curbs Gone Wild add the final touch to your landscape.
Located in the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, 2 ½ hours from Potomac, Massanutten Resort has for over 50 years been a favorite destination for nature lovers and active lifestyle enthusiasts who are drawn to the fresh air, pristine natural beauty, and wide range of outdoor (and indoor) activities. Offering some of the region’s best skiing, snowboarding, and other cold-weather sports, it has long been recognized as one of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier winter vacation destinations.
Perhaps less well known is Massanutten’s allure as a year-round resort, offering hiking, mountain biking, golf and dozens of other family-friendly activities, making it a perfect get-away during the warmer months, as well. Upon arrival, guests check in at the Woodstone Meadows Welcome Center to pick up their keys before continuing on to their accommodations – a mix of traditional wood-clad condominiums, a hotel, and spacious single-family homes
that are clustered in developments throughout the resort.
Spread across 6,000 acres on Massanutten Mountain, the sprawling resort is effectively split into the lower “valley” and upper “mountain” sections. “The valley” features one of the resort’s two 18-hole golf courses, a petting farm, an enormous indoor/ outdoor water park, and a myriad of other activities.
The ”mountain” is dominated by the Massanutten Ski Resort, a network of slopes and trails which in winter caters to skiers of all abilities. After the snow melts, the ski area is transformed into an expansive mountain bike park with over 5 miles of gravity-fed bike trails that snake through the trees and traverse the ski slopes. An additional 30 miles of pristine hiking and cross-country mountain biking trails cut through wooded terrain on the back side of the mountain and are easily accessible from the resort. This part of the resort also boasts multiple restaurants, the Mountain Greens
Golf Course, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and the Family Adventure Park, which features zip lines, summer tubing (a riff on snow tubing), a climbing wall, and a ropes course geared toward those 12 and under that winds its way through the trees.
In all, guests can choose from over 100 daily activities within the resort, and dozens of others (kayaking, gallery-hopping, and wine tasting, among them) within a few minutes’ drive.
There is also a wide variety of dining options conveniently sprinkled around the resort, mostly fast-casual, with nothing too pricey or pretentious. The laidback Campfire Grill is famous for its handcrafted pizzas, while the recently opened Splash’s Bar & Grill features fresh seafood and a raw bar. My personal favorite, Base Camp, occupies a glass-sided, open-air, yurt at the base of the ski slopes, with seating that spills out onto the deck. You can usually find my wife and me here after a day of skiing or, in the warmer months, enjoying the live music, upscale bar food and local craft beers. Our kids often spread out a blanket nearby and watch a movie under the stars.
Sometimes, in the summer, we’ll treat ourselves and rent one of the spacious residences in the resort’s exclusive Regal Vistas development, all high ceilings and picture windows with sweeping views of the valley. Our kids and their friends will spend their days at the water park or mountain biking, and my wife and I will play golf (both courses, if we’re lucky), and we’ll meet up at the end of the day to eat dinner as a family and catch up on each other’s adventures. Invariably, laughter ensues. Later, after the sun’s gone down, the kids will watch a movie and my wife will find a comfy chair to curl up with a book. I’m already thinking about tomorrow. When the lights go out, we all sleep like babies.
Working as an entertainment lawyer sounds like an incredibly glamorous and exciting occupation, and often it can be. Lita RosarioRichardson, of the law firm Shulman Rogers, knows what it’s like to attend awards ceremonies like the Grammys and work alongside celebrities.
However, as one of the few women working in this legal space, Lita also knows the hard work involved to successfully represent recording artists. She has made it her mission to ensure that her clients receive critical information in the first contract signing to help them maximize earning potential over the long term, including royalties. She is also an expert in “copyright recapture,” which involves securing ownership rights for songs.
Originally from Boston, Lita attended Howard University as an undergraduate – rooming with singer-songwriter Crystal Waters and recruiting Vice President Kamala Harris to join the school’s debate team – and graduated from Howard Law School in 1986. Her legal experience includes working on Wall Street and then in Washington, D.C. for the Securities and Exchange Commission. She explains that her time spent in corporate law “was an excellent training ground that helped me be the entertainment lawyer I am today; it allowed me to review entertainment contracts with the same scrutiny that I would review corporate merger and acquisition documents.”
Lita’s first job representing artists came when she helped negotiate a recording contract for Crystal Waters with the Basement Boys, a producer team from Baltimore. That experience ultimately led to her becoming a co-founder/owner and VP of Business and Legal Affairs for music production company University Music Entertainment; producing multi-platform recording groups such as Dru Hill (How Deep is Your Love), Sisqó (Thong Song), MYA, Lita later went on to represent Missy Elliott and Tank.
In 1998, she was ready to hang out her shingle as an entertainment lawyer. For 24 years, Lita was the principal of WYZ Girl Entertainment. Most significantly, she secured back royalties for many artists including Peaches & Herb, Das EFX and consulted for Missy Elliott’s team on copyright ownership. Now, she also advises artists’ estates, from the Zapp and Levert estates to former members of Cameo and others. Lita has also acted as an expert/consultant in litigation matters involving Roger & Zapp and other artists. She represented clients in songwriter and author disputes for the mega-hit records “Who Let the Dogs Out?”, “Blame It on the Alcohol”, and “Suit & Tie,” securing ownership rights for these clients. She has negotiated with all of the major record distribution and music publishing companies.
ARTICLE BY MARIE ROBEY WOOD PHOTOGRAPHY BY TONY POWELLRosario-Richardson joined Shulman Rogers, one of the Capital Region’s largest law firms, in 2022 because she recognized her clients had many other legal needs besides entertainment. As the firm’s leading entertainment practice lawyer, she states: “I want to be able to deliver the other services that my clients need, whether for their personal legal needs, medical malpractice, buying and selling properties, or wills and trusts, Shulman Rogers can service those other needs.”
Lita oversees both litigation and contract negotiation, with nearly a hundred clients ranging from artists, managers, agents, publicists, stylists, industry executives, book authors, literary agents and even investors in the entertainment space. She even finds time to provide consulting services for start-ups on entertainment matters and assisting fashion designers, software developers and other creators with trademark and branding matters.
She is generous with her time, serving on the board of directors of the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association and previously on the Washington D.C. Chapter of the Recording Academy (Grammy) Board of Governors, among other associations. Additionally, she has been teaching since the 90’s as an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia’s Music Department and, more recently, at American University’s Kogod School of Business.
Lita is also a mentor to students and young lawyers; she counsels young women that although their careers are important, having a family is equally important, both of which are not without compromise. Never having children of her own and after her sister passed from cancer in 2011, Lita played a major role in raising her niece and nephew, who is now in his medical residency for psychology.
In her “spare time,” Lita also enjoys home decorating, having once co-owned an antiques store on Capitol Hill with her mother, and recently renovated the new home she shares with her husband Ralph Richardson in Avenel.
We enjoy serving our patients’ needs and building connections that last through the generations! There is a story behind every smile!

BEFORE AFTERWe asked local entrepreneurs and managers what makes our community so supportive. Here’s what they had to say.
“My business is providing resources for members, lifting voices at our county and state, while building valuable relationships. In the past, I worked industries that put me in-a-box. It wasn’t until I relocated to Bethesda where my talents were valued and celebrated. I thrive working in the economic engine of Maryland alongside leaders from various businesses.”
ERIN M. PICKRELL Director, Griswold Home Care“Fellow business owners helped spread the word and our residential neighbors would post about us on community social media forums. So many expressed their genuine excitement and encouragement in learning our location was woman-owned. One of the biggest delights for me was the support and engagement from the Greater Bethesda Chamber.”
JULIANA STEIN
Owner, barre3 Bethesda“I’ve been blessed to partner with incredible women entrepreneurs in the Potomac area over the last 5 years. We lifted each other up during difficult times, and I feel blessed to have gotten through the pandemic. My studio feels like it’s vibrant self again, and clients are so grateful our childcare is back.”
“I love being a part of our community in Montgomery County. We have a strong network of senior serving professionals, non-profits, individuals, and more who work together to improve our community in Potomac and beyond. I think our community is unique in the way it welcomes women-owned businesses, encourages creativity and working together, and supports one another-even competitors!”
VERELYN GIBBS WATSON Owner, Nothing Bundt Cakes Bethesda“As a woman entrepreneur, being surrounded by people who uplift you and believe in you gives you the confidence that you need to...build the business of your dreams. The Potomac area provides a host of groups that strive to also support other entrepreneurs who are moms and understand the struggles.”
“This intelligent and diverse community is extraordinarily welcoming! I feel highly regarded for the wisdom and skill I bring...Also, the community at large encourages businesses to add value and contribute to creating an excellent quality of life for its members. My experience serving the residents of Potomac is one of great fulfillment and satisfaction!”
SHARVARI CHWASTYK Events, PR, and Marketing Consultant“I enjoy working with business owners to develop their business strategy, market to the right audience, and gain exposure to the local community. Being a business owner with clients in the Potomac area has helped me see firsthand how much people are willing to support each other and truly encourage local businesses.”
“The Potomac area prioritizes community. As a woman-owned, mother-owned business, this community has embraced Bethesda Conservatory of Dance. Our dedication to kindness within the studio resonates with the inclusive nature of the area. We all want a nurturing environment for our children. Potomac being a highly educated neighborhood of passionate parents has been very supportive”
COLLEEN SNYDER Founder and Owner, Bethesda Conservatory of Dance MELINDA BUTTERFIELD Real Estate Agent, The Butterfield Group with ReMax RealtyAs the President and Executive Creative Director of PXG Apparel, Renee Parsons is a powerful female business leader within the golf industry, one that has been historically male dominated. After noticing a glaring gap in the market for fashion forward golf apparel and accessories, Parsons seized the opportunity to start an apparel division of PXG in 2018. With an overarching focus on performance and attention to detail, Parsons is at the helm of producing golf clothing unlike any other, that will take a player throughout their day, on and off the course.
Celebrating the basics, PXG has reimagined golf essentials with updated silhouettes, new technical fabrics, vibrant neon colors, and contemporary detailing to deliver versatile, performance-driven styles fit for the modern golfer.
Designed to move you and your game ahead, the PXG Spring 2023 Collection is inspired by the golf lifestyle in its purest form, providing both familiarity and comfort within each piece. PXG’s well-known black, gray, and white color palette is elevated with the introduction of bold neon pink and green accents while traditional
golf silhouettes are enhanced with cutting edge performance fabrications and detailing.
With a focus on comfort and performance, this effervescent collection is dynamic with innovative fabrics and designs, such as shadow knitwear with enhanced breathability, perforated performance mesh polos, sporty dress and skirt silhouettes, and three new fabric weights for temperature control. The “hybrid” fabric provides versatility for daily activities, while “on the course” is designed for peak performance, sun protection, and maximum comfort.
The lightest weight, “breathable” option is engineered to keep the wearer cool and able to withstand even the hottest day on the links.
For Spring 2023, the Sonoran Desert’s native Saguaro cacti inspired a light green colorway, along with a new fabric design. Additionally, new innovative designs such as a 3D interlocked PXG logo and embroidery details, along with vivid pink and green hues infuse energy and adaptability into every style. Intentionally designed to be worn interchangeably with past seasons, PXG Spring 2023 fits seamlessly within any golfer’s wardrobe.
