Summer...we all do it in our own way, but for most of us there are non-negotiables that seem to top everyone's "can't miss" lists during this all-too-short season.

I certainly have my definitive Portland area picks: day trips to Willard Beach, afternoon boat rides with friends to Cocktail Cove, and long evenings spent dining al fresco at Yosaku.

But please, please don't even suggest to me the possibility of going through an entire summer without at least one thing: live music, and lots of it.

The concert industry is finally back in full swing since the pandemic, and we're more spoiled than ever by the bounce-back, especially in Portland. I'm almost giddy about some of the performances I've already snagged tickets for this season, and I'm just getting started.

What’s more, we have some of the best musical talent right here in our backyard. Check out our cover story to hear from Adam Gardner, vocalist and guitarist for the band Guster, who tells us why he loves calling Maine home and what makes performing for his hometown crowd at the annual Guster On the Ocean Festival so special.

And with all that summer fun, it can be easy to neglect our self-care, so read on for tips on where to grab healthy and delicious eats around town, how to make your home more beautiful and supportive to your well-being, and ways to keep your skin healthy and glowing this season despite the extra time outdoors.

Packing in all the extras this time of year can certainly be daunting, but no matter what you're up to, I hope you slow down, take it all in, and savor every moment. Before we know it, summer will be (to borrow a sentiment from Guster) lost and gone forever, but the memories we make will last a lifetime...and that's what summer's all about.

"An easy way to do this is by making simple, healthy habits unique and special to you." It Takes a Village

THREE ORGANIZATIONS THAT RELY ON THE POWER OF VOLUNTEERS

When summer rolls around, we find ourselves with plenty of time for our favorite activities—after all, summer is the best season in Maine. Whether you’re headed to the beach, hiking in the mountains, or cracking open a new book, the opportunities for self-care are abundant. But next time you’re taking a moment for yourself, consider what you’re doing to help others across the Pine Tree State.

Countless nonprofits in Maine depend on volunteers to help them make a difference. Whatever your interests—from music to food to the outdoors—there’s an organization that would benefit from your time. This summer, we encourage you to grab your friends and family and spend an afternoon serving the greater Portland community. To get started, we’ve highlighted three organizations that could use a helping hand. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

PORTLAND TRAILS

If you’ve ever walked along a trail in the greater Portland area, odds are it’s part of urban nonprofit Portland Trails’ 70-mile network of accessible paths and green spaces. The organization relies on a robust community of volunteers to help maintain existing trails and build new ones, so join in on the once-monthly Public Trail Volunteer Day, organize a team-building group volunteer session, or consider becoming a Trail Steward. trails.org

REVERB MAINE NEEDS

Founded by environmentalist Lauren Sullivan and her husband, Guster guitarist Adam Gardner, REVERB partners with musicians, festivals, and music venues to protect the environment by organizing greener concerts and tours. Volunteers work in Action Villages to educate fans and connect them with local and national nonprofits while on-tour team members coordinate the elimination of single use water bottles, fueling of buses with sustainable biodiesel, donation of food waste, and more. reverb.org

A grassroots donation center that helps individuals and families in Maine meet their basic material needs, Maine Needs relies on the generosity of the Portland community to collect clothing, hygiene products, household items, and other necessities for Mainers facing financial hardship. On donation days, volunteers work three-hour shifts sorting and organizing goods; other times, they pack up items that caseworkers have requested on their clients’ behalf. maineneeds.org

Gardner On the Ocean

GUSTER GUITARIST AND REVERB

CO-FOUNDER ADAM GARDNER ON LONGEVITY, ENVIRONMENTALISM, AND PORTLAND’S MUSIC SCENE

“I was the kid that would still have shin guards on from soccer practice while rehearsing in my basement,” explains Adam Gardner. “I always knew music would be a part of my life, but I didn’t think it was going to be my living.” 32 years after forming the alternative rock band Guster, Gardner is grateful that the group—and its fanbase—is still going strong. “The band has certainly lasted a lot longer than any of us thought it would,” he laughs.

Gardner, who grew up in New Jersey before attending Tufts University (where he met his wife, Lauren Sullivan, and Guster bandmates) is grateful to call Portland home. “I thought I knew Portland from touring,” he says, “but I didn’t realize how wonderful it really is. I’m more than happy to live out the rest of my days here.”

The city’s music scene has changed significantly since Gardner and Sullivan moved here. “In 2005, there weren’t many national acts coming through,” he recalls. “With Thompson’s Point and House of Music, and even smaller venues like Sun Tiki, it’s really come a long way. Same with the city,” he says. “When we came here, the big issue was brain drain. How do we keep young people here in Portland? But now, everyone’s coming here.”

Gardner is doing his part to bring visitors to the city by hosting the family friendly Guster On the Ocean festival every August at Thompson’s Point, which is returning next month for its fifth year. He jokingly refers to the three-day festival as “a wedding weekend,” with a Friday night show at State Theater “that kind of functions as the rehearsal dinner,” followed by two full days of music at the Point.

The Portland festival is just one of many supported by REVERB, the nonprofit Gardner co-founded with Sullivan to make live music more sustainable. “When Guster went on the road, it became clear that touring is negative for the environment. I felt terrible about that. We were opening for bands like Dave Matthews and Maroon 5 at the time, and I was having the same conversations with them about the impact of the tour. I told Lauren, and she’s like, ‘Well, why don’t you guys do anything about it?’” Gardner says. “We talked to Bonnie Raitt, who had a sustainability program called The Green Highway. They mentored us until we were able to get our own nonprofit status, and it continued to blossom from there.”

In recent years, REVERB has partnered with artists like Billie Eilish and Harry Styles. “It’s sort of a dual-pronged approach,” Gardner explains. “We want to make the tours sustainable, but we also want to take advantage of the fact that 20,000 people are coming together. So, we fold a member of our staff into the crew, just like a sound person, and then we set up an Action Village in the concourse where local nonprofits can incentivize fans to take action on the spot.” (Learn more about volunteering on page 15.)

As for Guster’s longevity, Gardner notes the band has no plans to stop playing anytime soon. “It’s not easy to keep a band together for this long, but we love what we’re doing. I used to say, you know, maybe three more years. But it’s been 25 years of that, so I’m not going to say it anymore,” he laughs.

“I thought I knew Portland from touring, but I didn’t realize how wonderful it really is.”

Healthy Skin is Always In

Rytualist founder Bonny Rollender teaches us how to practice safe summer skin care

CARE
BEAUTY

“Mainers spend eight or nine months out of the year bundled up or inside, so they tend to head out in the summer sun unprotected for a much-needed vitamin D boost,” says Bonny Rollender, founder and chief product curator at Rytualist, a unique aesthetics bar in the Old Port. While there’s really no way to tan safely, Rollender notes, the best thing to do is “stay judicious about sunscreen or a barrier, like a hat or UPF shirt.” To help you learn the best way to stay safe this season, we asked Rollender to share her top tips for summer skin care. Here’s what she had to say.

LEARN THE DIFFERENCE

There are so many different types of sunscreens on the market that it can be overwhelming to determine which product is right for you. Rollender explains there are two main categories: chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV rays, convert them to heat, and release them from the body; and physical sunscreens, which are mineral based (think zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) and protect your skin by reflecting UV rays. Some of the chemicals in the former category can build up in your body over time and may be harmful to your health, so Rollender always recommends opting for mineral based sun protection. Avoid products containing petroleum, oxybenzone, and homosalate, which can have a negative impact on marine wildlife. Consider application style, too. “It’s easier to inhale or ingest chemicals with aerosol sprays,” Rollender says, “so choose a cream or brush-on product instead.”

PROTECT YOUR FACE

“Any product with zinc oxide—and specifically made for the face—is where we should focus,” Rollender explains. Her favorite face-protecting product for the summer is a mineral-based powder from NOON Aesthetic. “They have a fabulous product called Brush

N Go with SPF 50 that comes in formulations for both normal and oily skin,” she says. “It’s great to keep in your purse or pocket, and you can use it at any time to add extra protection—even over your makeup.”

KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

“The most important thing to remember as someone with oily skin is that oily does not necessarily mean hydrated,” Rollender says. “In addition to using SPF, people with oily skin should focus on products that accelerate cell turnover, like vitamin C in the morning and lactic acid in the evening, plus a moisturizer specific for oily or acneic skin.” If your skin is on the drier side, she continues, “you’ll want a moisturizer that is suited for normal to dry skin, and maybe a hyaluronic acid serum to boost hydration.”

LAYER CORRECTLY

When it comes to the proper order of application, Rollender suggests you “start with the lightest serum or cream before moving to the denser lotions, which is better for ingredient absorption.” If using a chemical sunscreen (which she doesn’t typically recommend), “it should go on first, because it needs to absorb into the skin to work.” If you prefer a mineral sunscreen, like NOON’s MultiVit Sun Protector, it can be applied after your other skin care products. To keep things simple, Rollender says, “my general suggestion is to choose a moisturizer that has SPF in it.”

MAKE IT ROUTINE

“Creating any type of routine gets us in the habit of doing something regularly, and that holds true for skin care as well,” notes Rollender. She encourages everyone to begin by washing their face twice a day with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, makeup, and grime. Remember to wear sunscreen daily and select key products with

the right ingredients for your type of skin. “If you start this routine at an early age,” she explains, “it will support continuous cell regeneration and will keep your skin healthy as you advance in age.”

SHOP LOCAL

While it’s easy to order your skin care products on Amazon, Rollender emphasizes the importance of supporting local businesses. Rytualist, located on Market Street, offers a variety of summer skin care products in

addition to cosmetic and aesthetic dermatology services to keep your skin healthy. Rollender is particularly excited about Rytualist’s new EMAGE Image Pro Sunlite system, which analyzes your skin from the inside out with a 3D scan. “It allows us to see deep into the layers of the dermis to observe the damage that’s occurring and predict future damage as a person ages,” she says. “It also compares the patient’s skin age to that of other ‘similarly aged’ patients in a database.” For more information, visit rytualist.com .

LEARN MORE: Bonny is a Maine native who recently returned to the state to be closer to family and join the small business community in Portland. Her education and experience in healthcare management—combined with her Skin Masterclass Certification in Skincare Consultation—provided the foundation for creating Rytualist, a unique medical aesthetic experience located in the heart of the Old Port.
