The Men's Issue!
This month, we raise a glass to the men who lead, protect, provide, build, and inspire—the fathers, mentors, brothers, husbands, and friends who quietly shape the communities we live in.
June brings with it Father’s Day, of course, but this issue isn’t just about celebrating fatherhood—it’s about honoring the gentleman in all forms. The man who shows up early and stays late. The one who leads not with ego, but with integrity. The one who knows that strength and kindness are not opposites, but partners.
We’ve met some incredible men while creating this issue—guys who turn wrenches, chase passions, raise good kids, and pour into others. You’ll read about grit and craftsmanship, tradition and transformation, legacy and leadership. Whether it’s a story from the racetrack or wisdom passed down through generations, this month’s features are a nod to the men who remind us that being a gentleman is about more than good manners or polished shoes—it’s about character.
So here’s to the men of Porter City and beyond: May you continue to work hard, love big, speak truth, and leave things better than you found them. Whether you’re a father, mentor, friend, or neighbor—thank you for the role you play. You are appreciated more than you know.
Happy Father’s Day, and happy June!

CONTINUED GROWTH IN PRECINCT 4
contactp4@mctx.org
Spanning from Kingwood to Cleveland, and from Conroe to New Caney, Precinct 4 is the largest precinct in Montgomery County. 33% of all roads in the county is maintained by Precinct 4.
East Montgomery County is growing at a rapid pace. In the last 5 years, East Montgomery County has had more energy hook ups than Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi combined. With this growth comes a change in the dynamics of our community. As more neighborhoods and friendly faces are added to the area, so does the amount of road miles Precinct 4 is responsible for maintaining. The increase in curb and gutter neighborhoods with concrete roadways have changed how we maintain our county roads. For example, Commissioner Gray recently added a street sweeper to Precinct 4's fleet. A street sweeper not only prevents dirt from clogging storm drains, but ultimately prolongs the lifespan of the street. Additionally, Commissioner Gray has been working closely with Texas Department of Transportation on funding larger infrastructure projects such as on and off ramps on SH 99 at Valley Ranch.
Commissioner Gray is committed to improving community infrastructure and environmental sustainability, and ensuring that the needs of a growing area are met with thoughtful and long-term solutions.
“During my time in office, my goal has been and will continue to be to protect the county, the precinct, you and your property value, while keeping our community appealing and safe.”
-Commissioner Matt Gray

SWINGING FOR JUSTICE
How Nick Wills Brings a Champion’s Mindset to Personal Injury Law
ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BROOKE MADL PHOTOGRAPHY
Nick Wills doesn’t just practice personal injury law—he plays it like a ballgame; strategizing, adapting, and never backing down. As the owner of The NMW Law Firm, Nick brings the same discipline, resilience, and teamwork that defined his years on the baseball diamond into every case he handles.
“Baseball taught me resilience, preparation, and hard work—the same principles I bring to every case and every client.”
Baseball was once his world—from backyard swings at age four to competing on some of the sport’s biggest amateur stages. Now, law is his calling, and the lessons he learned on the field continue to shape how he advocates for his clients.
Nick's journey into law was fueled by a desire to make a difference. After working at several firms, he realized he needed to take control to serve clients the way he believed was right. Tired of red tape and limited decision-making power, he stepped up to the plate and launched The NMW Law Firm —built on the same relentless drive and discipline that once fueled his game on the diamond.
What sets Nick apart is his unwavering commitment to doing his absolute best. “I have a fear of not doing my best to help someone else,” he admits. “If I leave a situation where I felt like I could have done more, I would feel immense guilt.” That tenacity isn’t just talk—it’s the same mindset that propelled him to excel in baseball, practicing harder than anyone else, refining his skills long after official practices ended. When he worked harder at hitting than anyone else on his teams, it showed, and he applied the same principle to his law firm: work harder, strive for excellence, and never settle for anything less than the best outcome for his clients.
From winning a national title with his Little League team at 12 to securing second place in the Division III College World Series with Emory University, Nick has seen the highs and lows of competition. He understands that even the best hitters fail more than they succeed—and that resilience matters most. ‘Baseball keeps you humble,’ he says,’ but it also instills the value of hard work. The same principles apply at my firm.”
Beyond resilience, baseball also taught him the importance of mental strength, being prepared, anticipating the next move, and making decisions under pressure. In personal injury law, mental sharpness is just as crucial. Strategy plays a role, and Nick ensures that every case is handled with a thoughtful, tactical approach with the goals of clients' health and compensation. Just like understanding plays on the field, Nick creates a playbook for clients seeking legal help for a personal injury case: intake, treat, demand, negotiate, litigation, and settlement.
At the core of The NMW Law Firm are four guiding values: humility, excellence, common sense, and attentiveness, which Nick has honed both on the baseball field and in his legal career, with plans for growth helping more clients. Whether he’s swinging for a base hit or swinging for justice in the courtroom, one thing is clear—Nick Wills plays to win, and his clients always have a champion in their corner.

Hunter McMillan’s Game Plan for Life
While many high school students are gearing up for football or basketball, Porter High School senior Hunter McMillan is carving out a different path. Instead of cleats or sneakers, he grabs his bean bags and wooden boards—dominating Houston’s competitive cornhole scene and proving he’s not your average teen athlete.
Hunter’s journey began in the backyard, playing casual games with his dad and neighbors. What started as a fun pastime quickly became a passion. As he practiced more, tossing bags with family and friends, he realized how much he enjoyed the sport—and how good he was getting. By 2024, Hunter was competing in local tournaments, going head-to-head with seasoned players and securing his first big win.
The bags may be soft, but Hunter’s toss is fierce as he shoots for success through a mix of dedication and fun. He practices often at home, working on precision shots like roll bags and airmails. While he doesn’t have an official coach, his dad and friends offer valuable tips to help him fine-tune his technique. One of his proudest moments came when he teamed up with his mom in a tournament and won a $700 prize—an unforgettable memory.
Though tournament winnings often go toward travel, gear, and entry fees, Hunter appreciates having a hobby that supports itself. Balancing school, cornhole, and family hasn’t always been easy, but his support system keeps him grounded. One of his favorite high school memories is getting to eat lunch with his mom every day.
Whether he’s on the boards, the golf course, or dreaming of being “knee deep in the water somewhere,” this Spartan is just getting started—and aiming high.
After graduation, Hunter plans to attend Blinn College to pursue certification as an elevator technician, with hopes of joining his dad in business. He’s seen the opportunity and stability the trade offers and is eager to follow in his father’s footsteps.
With cornhole now recognized as a college sport, Hunter dreams of joining a collegiate team, earning his Pro card, and keeping the game a lifelong passion. Whether he’s on the boards, the golf course, or dreaming of being “knee deep in the water somewhere,” this Spartan is just getting started—and aiming high.

THE MAKING OF TEXAS TOUGH CUSTOMS
ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS
When it comes to off-road innovation, Texas Tough Customs (TTC) stands out for its originality, durability, and hands-on craftsmanship. Based in Splendora, Texas, TTC specializes in custom suspension systems and off-road accessories designed specifically for Honda Talon and Honda Pioneer 1000 vehicles. TTC parts aren’t just built to impress—they’re made to perform on the toughest terrain, trusted by passionate riders across the country. The company is known not only for transforming machines into off-road powerhouses but also for its unmatched customer service, grassroots beginnings, and loyal community.
At the heart of TTC is Jared Doster, a man whose journey to fabrication mastery is anything but traditional. From a young age, Jared was drawn to off-roading and anything on wheels. In high school, he began designing custom speaker boxes for classmates, unknowingly planting the seeds for a future in design and fabrication. After
earning degrees in both Dance and Industrial Design from Sam Houston State University, he toured internationally for five years with the renowned Pilobolus Dance Theatre before becoming a university professor. But between rehearsals and classes, Jared always found himself back in the garage—welding, building, and creating. Jared’s path might seem unexpected, but his ability to think in motion, understand structure, and push limits made his dreams become reality with high-performance off-road engineering.
His creative energy didn’t stop on the stage. In between tours and teaching, Jared taught himself to weld, built a hot rod from scratch, and eventually purchased a Honda Pioneer 1000. At the time, there were no aftermarket suspension kits available, so he built his own. That one design sparked unexpected interest from off-road enthusiasts and laid the foundation for what would become Texas Tough Customs.
Today, TTC operates out of a 5,600-square-foot shop in Splendora with a full team and state-of-the-art equipment. They build and ship custom parts nationwide, including suspension kits that dramatically improve ride quality and allow for larger tires, along with bumpers, rock sliders, and custom roll cages. Every product is designed and built in-house with both performance and style in mind.
Jared continues to be a hands-on leader. His personal Talon, used for prototyping, was the first in the country to run 40" tires without portals and features TTC’s exclusive hydraulic steering kit. More than just a business owner, he remains an active part of the offroad community—attending wheeling trips and sharing knowledge in online forums.
From performing under stage lights to welding under shop lights, Jared Doster’s journey is a testament to innovation, hustle, and staying true to your roots. Texas Tough Customs is more than a business—it’s proof that passion, perseverance, and hands-on ingenuity can build something extraordinary. With groundbreaking developments like hydraulic steering and rear-steer options on the horizon, TTC isn’t just pushing limits— it’s forging a legacy that’s only just beginning.
THE STORY BEHIND LLOYD FAMILY RACING
Fueled by Family, Driven by Faith
ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS
“Hard work, faith, and family drive Lloyd Family Racing— where the next generation learns to chase dreams.”
For the Lloyd family, racing isn’t just a sport—it’s a legacy in motion. Born from a lifelong passion for cars and a deep desire to connect generations, Lloyd Family Racing (LFR) began not as a business plan, but as a way to bring family and friends back together through something they all loved. Owner Doug Lloyd's journey started humbly on a farm, where mechanical skills came early. “I rebuilt my first motor when I was a freshman in high school,” he says. Inspired by a cousin who built hot rods and Sunday afternoons spent watching NASCAR after church—always rooting for Dale Earnhardt—Lloyd fell in love with the precision and grit of racing.
After becoming a young father, life took priority over racing. Still, he remained a die-hard fan. In 2001, while passing Kansas Speedway, he told his wife Lisa they’d finally see Earnhardt race in person. Sadly, that dream was cut short with Earnhardt’s tragic death. Years later, with more flexibility in life and a growing family of grandchildren, a conversation with longtime friend Carey Miller reignited the spark. Together with seasoned racer Jody Mayne, they purchased their first Northeast Big Block Modified car in 2022—and Lloyd Family Racing was born.
From the beginning, it was about fun, faith, and family. “We just wanted to learn the sport, camp out, and spend time together,” Lloyd says. But something clicked. They brought in driver Patrik Daniel in 2022, and in their second season, everything changed. Patrik pushed LFR to new heights, securing heat wins and podium finishes, with their
first official win on August 4, 2023. That same year, they decided to run for the 2024 Southern States Modified Series championship.
Doug reflects on his journey with a sense of humility and purpose. A man of faith, he credits Ephesians 1:3–6 as a guiding truth in his life—a reminder that his blessings, including the racing legacy he's built, are part of a greater plan. Doug and Lisa’s grandchildren are already immersed in the world of racing, learning life skills, and staying active as they explore the sport. Their progress isn't just measured in trophies. It’s about building something meaningful for future generations. Their oldest grandson, just eight years old, is already racing quarter midgets, with others waiting in the wings. “We’ve always said America was built by people who get their hands dirty,” Lloyd explains. “At the track or in the shop, kids are learning life-long skills—not staring at screens. They’re changing tires, knocking mud off the car, and soaking it all in. The Lloyd family proves that the heart of racing lies not in the car, but in the people behind it.
From the meticulous work in the shop to the joy of late-night cookouts at the track, every member of LFR plays a role. Jody and Carey prepare the car, Lisa handles logistics, and Doug makes sure everything gets where it needs to go. Together, they’ve built more than a race team—they’ve built a community. With faith in their hearts, grit in their hands, and a growing team of future racers under their wing, Lloyd Family Racing is just getting started.
“ ”
At Lloyd Family Racing, success isn’t just about wins—it’s about building faith, family bonds, and future generations.

The NMW Law Firm
Do your best. Seems cliché, but that usually puts it into perspective for me because I am usually hard on myself (like we all are) for not doing better, and sometimes fall into the trap of comparing myself to my past self on a better day, or even comparing myself to others. Doing my best just means literally doing the best job I possibly can at that given moment, which I find I perform better than if I’m thinking “I should be doing better than I currently am” or “this isn’t good enough." It puts it into perspective for me because that’s literally all anyone can really do – is their best.
As a father to five children, the best advice I have is to be intentional with the time you have with your kids. Time is finite and fleeting, but by spending quality, undistracted time, you can make memories that your children will forever cherish.

In my opinion, a father is the foundation and bedrock of our lives. He is the compass for our future, guiding us through the good, bad, and sad. He applauds our successes with a love that's hard to understand as children, but we know he’s always there. My Pops was, and is, the strongest, most loyal, and best influence in my life. His advice to love my mother unconditionally, be there for my family, and treat others with respect has stayed with me. As a father, I now follow in his footsteps, sharing these lessons with my children. To all the fathers, present or not, Happy Father’s Day!
When I first told my Dad I was starting my business, he said to always under promise and over deliver. Nobody cares that you did what you were paid to do, but they will always remember when you go above and beyond what you promised. It was simple, but it really meant a lot to me because I knew it was his way of being supportive despite him thinking I was nuts for starting a business. He was right about both.

Learning a new skill together, or sharing a favorite hobby, is a great way to bond. If Dad likes woodworking or fishing, finding a class to attend together goes beyond gifting tools and allows fun.

Movie Night
Enjoy a movie night together with popcorn, candy and all the fixings. Home movies enable strolls down memory lane, or one of his favorite movies from his childhood makes for fun conversation. Ordering a projector for a large format screening makes the movie night feel extra theatrical.

Chef’s Kiss
Take the food pressure off Dad and invite local culinary experts to prepare a meal. A fun theme, based around his favorite vacation, such as Hawaiian food, will make the evening memorable. Alternatively, try a local cooking class together based on his favorite cuisine.
Blast From The Past
Brainstorm childhood memories together and enjoy a day reliving them. If he chaperoned a trip to the zoo, experience it again together. If short on time, stop at a favorite ice cream stand and tell him how much you cherish the memories.
