TRAVEL BACK IN TIME AT HERITAGE FARMSTEAD MUSEUM

ARTICLE BY GARLAND HANCOCK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LOVELYN PHOTOGRAPHY, HERITAGE FARMSTEAD MUSEUM

Plano had just turned 18 — when its now crowned jewel first shone on a blackland prairie that would ultimately evolve the city into a retail hub for area farmers.

Today, that crowned jewel — aka the "Farrell-Wilson House" — annually draws 35,000-plus visitors.

Folks arrive not only to tour the Victorian farmhouse but also to experience the agrarian ambiance that engulfs it.

The home, along with other historic structures, sits on 3.67 acres. In 1986, the property officially opened to the public as the Heritage Farmstead Museum, a bucolic step into a shrinking past.

As I stroll the grounds this morning, a jumbo jet, a blaring horn, and an idling bus remind me of an abutting cityscape.

But the more resonant sounds are of guttural guinea fowl, turkeys, pigs, sheep, and goats along with a braying donkey and the rooster crowing the break of day.

"I used to take my kids here," says farmstead hand Kathy Wilson. "We were hooked after our first visit."

Wilson, a transplanted city girl from suburban Chicago, is today sporting some cool cowboy boots, apt attire for the museum's vice president of marketing, development, and "livestock." Preserving a Blackland Prairie

Ammie Wilson, Provided by Heritage Farmstead Museum

Wilson actually became agri-savvy 16 years ago when serving as the museum's part-time director of education.

"Our primary mission has always been to preserve this place and learn from its past," Wilson says.

The learning curve must start, she adds, with teaching generations Z and Alpha the importance of "sustainability" — how to meet present needs without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs.

Kids who witness the farmstead's sustainability up close will be inspired, Wilson reasons, to become preservationists themselves.

"We want to let kids roam the farm so they can touch what they have been reading about in books."

In addition to seasonal events, the museum facilitates school field trips and offers summer camps and volunteer opportunities for kids from pre-K to high school.

Much farmstead "edutainment" focuses on Central Texas' blackland prairies, a 300-mile swath of land running from the Red River to San Antonio.

This life-sustaining prairieland proved most vibrant during the years Mary Alice — the FarrellWilson House's original matriarch — was married to Hunter Farrell (1891-1929).

Farrell, a wealthy entrepreneur, bought 365 acres of blackland prairie and promptly built the aforementioned home as a wedding gift for his fiancée.

But Farrell was never a farmer. In fact, his business often kept him away, leaving Mary Alice and Ammie — Mary’s daughter from a previous marriage — to manage the farm along with hired hands overseen by Ernest Sanders, a former slave's son.

The farm's turn-of-the-century cash crop was wheat. But Ammie, just 11 years old when she and her mom moved into the farmhouse, would one day return to the estate and convert her then-deceased mother's wheat fields into pasture for prized Hampshire sheep.

In fact, Ammie Wilson, an accomplished and spry shepherdess, wound up winning first place at Chicago’s 1952 International Livestock Exhibition when she was 72.

Then, in 1968, Dudley Wilson, Ammie's husband of 53 years, died in a tragic car accident.

Four years later, Ammie passed and, in keeping with her mom's wishes, the farm was willed to Buckner Orphans Home of Dallas.

The orphanage sold the property in 1975 to the William Herbert Hunt Trust Estate, which, that same year, sold 4.15 acres to the city of Plano.

The city then leased the acreage to the Plano Heritage Association, which proved instrumental in creating the museum.

Travel With a Plan

Tips and Tricks from My Haven Travel By Cruise Planners

With 12 years of travel industry experience, the owner of My Haven Travel By Cruise Planners, Kendra Healy, has a record of bringing unique experiences to every trip planned.

Considering herself a travel concierge, Kendra is more than your average travel planner; she is your passport to a world of travel tips, packing prowess, and seamless planning.

We sat down with her to discuss travel tips and tricks to ensure that your next trip will turn your wildest dreams into tangible adventures.

CL: WHEN PACKING FOR TRIPS, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND CLIENTS PRIORITIZE TO ENSURE SMOOTH TRAVEL FROM START TO FINISH?

Kendra: First of all, you should always plan your outfits ahead of time and align everything with the weather you will encounter. If you are going somewhere with a rainy season, bring a raincoat.

By planning your outfits, you can determine what you can mix and match in your suitcase, which reserves room for extra shopping. Packing cubes are great for organizing a single outfit and its accessories.

Put heavy items in the bottom of your suitcase. I always recommend hard-shell roller bags because soft cases, though great for expansion, are not ideal for weathering and damage protection.

When you go international, always research and bring your international chargers. Make sure you have all your documentation in one place that is easy to reach. Be sure to take photos of all documentation in case you lose it.

Lastly, always research the embassy of your destination and add its contact information to your phone.

CONTINUED >

CL: WHAT EXPERT TIPS CAN YOU SHARE

WITH OUR READERS?

Kendra: I always tell clients to understand what they consider luxury or relaxation. Whether you crave the serenity of secluded beaches or the thrill of bustling city streets, this information can help you pinpoint your travel must-haves.

If you want to be cost-effective, have your agent look at off-season versus high-season trips.

Let your travel agent book your airlines, rental cars, and hotels directly for you versus going on a secondary site to book.

The reason is that if something happens, you have to go through the secondary vendor to resolve issues. They may have fine print that could incur additional fees for rescheduling or rebooking canceled flights.

Booking packages could be costeffective, but you also face the risk of unforeseen circumstances.

**ALWAYS BOOK TRAVEL INSURANCE**. Life happens—you never know what can happen tomorrow.

Travel agents can help you find the best price while helping you understand each risk.

Another tip: contact the credit card companies you will be traveling with so you won't get stuck unable to use them if they put a security block on them.

If traveling internationally, make sure your cell provider offers the best international rates.

CL: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WORKING WITH A TRAVEL AGENT?

Kendra: It’s worth pointing out that there are different types of travel agents. Not all are the same. Some agents prioritize higher commissioned partnerships over creating a valuable experience for the client.

However, a curated boutique experience can be worth it.

Whether you are seeking solace in the mountains or chasing sunsets on sandy shores, let Kendra be your compass in the vast sea of travel. Your adventure begins here.

• 1/4 cup packed brown sugar

• 1/4 cup quick-cooking oats

First Responder of the Month

Dee Dee Falls is the executive assistant to City Council. She ensures the office runs smoothly, which is no easy feat. Her duties include scheduling the appearances of seven council members at events, liaising with the Multicultural Outreach Round Table (MCOR), and responding to public requests for information.

That’s tedious work! What gives Dee Dee the grit to power through her days? Dee Dee attended 15 different high schools between 9th and 12th grades. This experience made her resilient and strong, qualities reflected in her work. “I don’t panic easily,” she says.

After high school, at age 19, Dee Dee became a police officer in Odessa, Texas. She later became a juvenile detective and eventually worked at the Odessa Teen Court. As the years unfolded, she moved to Plano as a police dispatcher and became intertwined with city government in various capacities.

Although her hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can bet Dee Dee is “on call” around the clock. She doesn't mind replying to people after hours via cell phone, email, or text. “I just don’t want anyone to think that their questions, no matter how basic or complex, aren’t important,” she says.

Forty-two years later, she is the epitome of a true public servant. “I’m very driven to respond to the public in the same way that I would want to be responded to,” she affirms. This embodiment of community service is what makes Dee Dee Falls our Good Human of the Month!
