“This event celebrates Pensacola’s unique charm while giving back to a cause that impacts so many lives.”
Get ready for an unforgettable weekend as Pensacola debuts the Wine on the Water: Food & Wine Festival, presented by Sandy Sansing Dealerships and Florida Insurance Agency. From March 20–22, 2025, this premier event will blend fine wines, gourmet cuisine, and breathtaking waterfront views—all in support of the Sacred Heart Foundation.
The festival aligns with the 2025 Pensacola Series sailing races, a highlight for sailing enthusiasts. For the first time, Pensacola will host two events: the first this month from March 23rd, coinciding with the festival, and the second from April 10th–13th. Six elite boats— Fox, Katana, Summer Storm, Vesper, Windquest, and Wizard—will compete, adding another layer of dynamic energy to the weekend.
The three-day celebration showcases the best of Pensacola’s culinary and cultural scene, featuring unique experiences to delight every guest.
THURSDAY, MARCH 20 – TIDE TO TABLE
The festivities begin with Tide to Table, an exclusive evening starting with a VIP reception at 4:30 PM, where guests can meet the GL-52 sailing teams after the day’s races. At 6:30 PM, enjoy an elegant VIP dinner featuring gourmet cuisine and expertly paired wines, setting the stage for a weekend of indulgence.
FRIDAY, MARCH 21 – SPONSOR RECEPTION
Sponsors are invited to The Top of the Centre, Pensacola Little Theatre’s rooftop venue, for a reception from 5:30–7:30 PM. Against stunning views of Pensacola Bay at sunset, this intimate gathering will celebrate the event’s partners and supporters.
SATURDAY, MARCH 22 – GRAND TASTING
The weekend’s main event, the Grand Tasting, takes place from 1–4 PM at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Guests will savor premium wines, craft beers, and culinary creations from top Pensacola chefs. The vibrant atmosphere includes live entertainment, a Croquet
and Rosé Tournament on the field, and views of the GL-52 sailing races gliding across the bay.
Festival attendees can choose from two ticket tiers for their perfect experience:
• General Admission: Includes a tote bag, wine and beer tasting glasses, access to the biergarten, live entertainment, and gourmet samplings.
• VIP Admission: Adds exclusive lounge access, private food tastings, and a specialty cocktail bar for a more elevated experience.
Proceeds from the festival benefit the Sacred Heart Foundation, supporting healthcare initiatives in the community. “This event celebrates Pensacola’s unique charm while giving back to a cause that impacts so many lives,” shared Jane Lauter of the Sacred Heart Foundation. “The Foundation is always happy to receive support from the community. There are so many ways that the Sacred Heart Foundation and Hospital will benefit with the proceeds from the event.”
The 2025 Pensacola Series enhances the festival’s appeal, with world-class sailing races providing an unforgettable backdrop. The series kicks off alongside the festival from March 20–23. Locals can head down to Plaza de Luna to get a look at the GL52’s in action. It concludes with a second event from April 10–13. With six elite boats competing, Pensacola Bay will come alive with action and excitement.

INSPIRED CLOSETS, THE STORY OF HOW IT BEGAN
Imagine that you’ve found an amazing idea and partnered with your long time friends to start a business. It’s an exciting time in your life. You’ve ridden this rodeo before and you’re looking forward to the amazing success and invigorating challenges of learning a new business; then; as you’re all set to launch the business you’re diagnosed with Sarcoma; a rare cancer. That is exactly what Matt and Lisa Uhl experienced when Matt was diagnosed with Sarcoma. In 2021 Matt began two paths at once; one a very familiar journey paved with the stones laid from walking on a road leading to previous victories; sprinkled with the seeds of success that grew flowers and trees bearing the fruit of confidence and the other, a dark path of unknown leading down the road of an unsure destiny with a possibility of an unfavorable reality. Matt and his wife Lisa are no strangers to starting and running a successful business. They have years of experience in assisting the residents of the gulf coast with attaining window treatments and more. But cancer in the form of Sarcoma was something new, frightening, and time consuming.
It all started when Matt noticed a very small knot behind his leg. As most of us typically do, he ignored the knot. As time passed the knot grew to the size of a golf ball. The knot could no longer be ignored. Matt sought medical help and after a series of examinations and tests, he was diagnosed with Sarcoma cancer. He was now faced with the challenge of weekly chemo treatments, 6 hours away all while the train of the business launch was gaining momentum and about to hit full speed.
This challenge didn’t stop Matt from moving forth. Today he is well and the business, Inspired Closets, is thriving. Overcoming one of the most trying times in his life, Matt has persevered. In just a few years’ time, Inspired Closets is one of the most innovative and essential businesses in the area. This company is not just a business, it’s an important thread in the fabric of the Pensacola community.

The stunning reimagining of
In a time of uncertainty and reflection brought on by the pandemic, Pensacola’s cultural heart is undergoing a transformative revival. The Pensacola Cultural Center, a storied institution nestled in a historic building, has been reimagined to better serve its community. This ambitious renovation is both a tribute to its history and a beacon of future potential. Here, we explore the motivations, challenges, and impact of this inspiring project.
While the global shutdown during COVID-19 disrupted lives and operations, it also provided an unexpected opportunity for introspection. For the Pensacola Cultural Center, the enforced pause became a moment to evaluate its mission, space, and priorities. As a hub of community creativity, its leadership seized this chance to dream big.
“COVID was the catalyst we needed,” Sid Williams-Heath, the CEO of The Center, reflected. “We wanted the Cultural Center to be as dynamic, cutting-edge, aesthetic, functional, and inspirational as possible. So, we reimagined The Center to showcase the talent and creativity it nurtures.”
What started as a $3 million renovation soon expanded into a $7 million transformation. Every corner of the facility is being touched. The main theatre underwent a complete makeover,
featuring plush new seating, advanced sound and lighting systems, and a warm, inviting design reminiscent of a Ralph Lauren “Polo Bar” with wood, brass, leather, and plaid accents.
The adjacent black box venue also received a sophisticated facelift, with floor-to-ceiling draperies, dark herringbone carpeting, and updated lighting to support both performances and events. Additional upgrades include a new gallery space, a modernized atrium with a hidden book nook and eclectic seating, a relocated box office, revamped classrooms, and rehearsal areas.
Perhaps most notably, Pensacola now boasts a rooftop performance space—the first of its kind in the area.
Restoring a nearly 115-year-old building has come with its share of challenges. The team has encountered numerous surprises during construction, from hidden structural issues to delays caused by supply chain disruptions. Working on a tight timeline while continuing operations in adjacent spaces has proven daunting.
Yet, the community’s resilience and support prevail. Volunteers, donors, and patrons have shown remarkable flexibility as programs were relocated or rescheduled. “Resilience and compassion have been the themes of the last year,” Sid noted. “Every delay and challenge was met with understanding and a shared commitment to the vision.”
Though modernized, The now named Clark Family Cultural Center, remains deeply rooted in its history. Originally a county jail and court of record building, the structure underwent its first adaptive reuse in the 1980s and 1990s. Key features such as the red-brick atrium and wooden judge’s wall were preserved, ensuring that the building’s storied past continues to resonate.
“The Center itself is a character in Pensacola’s story,” Sid said. “Its transformation balances the preservation of its integrity with a bold reimagination that invites the community to create new stories within its walls.”
The renovation was shaped by extensive community input. Stakeholder seminars helped uncover the community’s desires
and needs, which were integrated into the design. By addressing long-standing challenges and enhancing accessibility, the team ensured that The Center remains a resource for all.
The impact of this project extends far beyond aesthetics. As the home of Pensacola Little Theatre, Ballet Pensacola, Emerald Coast Writers, and other organizations, the Cultural Center is a vital hub for local creativity and collaboration. Its new rooftop performance space, aptly named The Top, will host live performances, private events, and unique programming to support artists and enrich the community.
The renovations aim to elevate Pensacola’s cultural landscape by
creating a welcoming, dynamic space for residents and visitors alike. “Pensacola needed a sense of arrival,” Sid explained. “We want The Center to be that place— whether you’re meeting a client, watching a performance, or simply soaking in the atmosphere.”
The project also highlights the economic and cultural benefits of the arts. By attracting tourists and supporting local talent, The Center reinforces Pensacola’s identity as a vibrant cultural destination.
At its core, the re-imagination is about access. From its diverse programming to its partnerships with over 50 organizations, The Center seeks to reflect and celebrate the stories of all who call Pensacola home. “Whatever your story is, it matters to us,” Sid emphasized. “Our expansion is
one more way to invest in, celebrate, and showcase more stories.”
When the renovations are complete, The Center will be poised for a new era of collaboration and creativity. Partnerships are being developed to maximize the space’s potential, and programming will continue to evolve in response to community needs. This project is more than a restoration—it’s an invitation for the community to dream, create, and connect.
As Sid put it: “A city’s progression is only as strong as the vibrancy of its culture and people. We hope The Center inspires pride, engagement, and continued growth for Pensacola.” Whether through performances, art, or quiet moments of inspiration, The Center is ready to help its community find its light, its stage, and itself.
OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD MAY BE MORE THAN ONE WOULD THINK
ARTICLE BY STEPHANIA STREIT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
“Food is much more than just eating, it is about community.”
“A good dinner is of great importance to good talk. One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well”, Virginia Woolf penned in 1929 in A Room of One’s Own . Throughout history, many have described our relationship with food as a passionate language of love. However, in our modern times, do we have this type of relationship, as Ms. Woolf described, with our food almost a hundred years later?
Tom McGehee, House Director of Bellingrath Gardens in Theodore, Alabama believes that our relationship with food is much more than just eating, it is about community. He also feels we have lost the “art of the home,” our internal community
of living, loving and learning that begins and ends at the kitchen table. As a result, we have tried to replace that sense of community outside of the home, without much success.
The Bellingraths designed their home around this philosophy of community within the home, so I decided to take a tour to see it for myself with Mr. McGehee as my tour guide. As we walked into the entrance of the Bellingrath home, our gaze immediately fell upon the grand formal dining room and its elegantly appointed table. Our eyes were captivated by the rich colors of the vibrant red and cream textiles surrounding the dining room table directly in front of us.
Mr. McGehee proudly stated with indelible emotion in his eyes and voice, “This dining room is one of the most photographed rooms in the South.” There is little reason to question the authenticity of his statement while standing and beholding the warmth and vitality of the room. It feels intimate, charming, and best of all, inviting. Nothing stiff or formal, even though the handsomely appointed table exudes the importance placed upon etiquette and beauty. Guests were expected to delight in a memorable dining experience that engaged all the senses of one’s heart, mind and soul.
Mr. McGehee explained that dining well for Mrs. Bellingrath was not only reserved for formal occasions; it was interwoven into the fabric of daily life within a home that was designed to be an inviting space centered around the enjoyment of food, company and conversation. Imagine two more dining rooms of lesser size and formality flanking the kitchen but with the same expectation of intimate dining, even a simple supper on a Sunday night. The household staff were also included in this expectation, having a beautiful marble topped table in the kitchen for meal times so they may gather and enjoy one another. Mrs. Bellingrath believed that every meal should be an uplifting experience, not utilitarian, no matter the person or occasion.
The Bellingrath home was built almost a century ago and since that time, home design has transformed dramatically as have our daily habits and interpretation of community, roles, and responsibilities within our homes. Has this change made us better or worse? When we do eat in our homes, do we dine or just consume food? Do we even have a table to gather around?
“Today’s homes are designed for cost, not community”, shares Jana Alarid of
Coldwell Bankers Realty. Her observation became an indisputable fact as we toured homes of varying sizes and ages throughout Pensacola. Ms. Alarid explained that the postmodern homeowner of today is looking for a practical layout in a home to accommodate remote work. It is designed more for utilitarian purposes than comfort and community. In other words, it is a house, not a home.
Then, how can the design of the modern house be modified to improve the life we live at home? By having the kitchen table as its center. Ms. Alarid explained, “The center of the home should be on the dining. Where I am from, people always gather around the kitchen table, friends and family, where we make food and eat food. The center should be where the family can eat together, play together, and just be together. Every house should have a space with a large dining table near the kitchen so it is natural for the family to sit down and eat around the table, no matter the shape, look at each other and talk.” What a novel concept in our world of technology, no screen time, just authentic face time where family and friends can merrily gather around the kitchen table as a shared community to drink, talk, play, and most importantly, to dine. Isn’t a home what we crave more than a place just to house our things?
It seems like Dorothy may have gotten it right after all when she said in The Wizard of Oz, “There is no place like home.” I have discovered that even I can create that sense of community by dining, not just eating, at home with a beautifully dressed table for one or for many. I believe it’s time to reserve a table. At home. For me and my community. Why? Because I am worth it. And so are you.

Is there an easy way to buy a good bottle of wine at the grocery store?
A conversation between myself and a random lady behind me in the checkout-line at Publix; Me:” If you don’t mind me asking, how did you pick-out those two bottles?” Lady: “Well, the name of my child is (same name as the wine), and they were on sale.” Me: “Have you had that wine before?” Lady: “Yes…it’s okay, it’s not great, but it’s okay for a Cab Sav to drink at home.” The convenience of just grabbing a bottle of wine right before you checkout at the grocery store is impossible to overstate! BUT, do you want a wine to take home that’s barely okay OR do you want something that you will actually like? Let’s talk about a few ways to pick a “grocery store” wine to take home that is actually okay.
We know from studies conducted by the wine industry that around 95% of wine drinkers buy a bottle of wine to drink within five
days of purchase. Most people do not want to put much thought into a wine that they are just going to drink at their house, probably while watching tv. This “house-wine” isn’t for a nice dinner or being shared, so why bother. This “house-wine” is also rarely spoken about after the fact…unless it was amazing. When it is amazing, it is spoken about in the same way you tell someone about a winning scratchoff, like “I won! Can you believe the odds that I picked a wine that I actually liked!,” all the while thinking that the chances of replicating the event are hard to even calculate.
So how do you replicate it? The 1st way; go to any of the local wine tastings and find a wine that you like. Write it down. Then next time you see that bottle buy it. Some don’t have time or don’t want to go to wine tastings and taste wine until you find one that you like that is also at the grocery store. I have often heard; “I just buy wines with the prettiest bottle.” Well, just like that scratch-off, the odds of winning are NOT in your favor!
ARTICLE BY ALEX BOYKIN
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The 2nd way is known as the “Points” system. Everyone has seen 92, 89, 95. Can’t you just grab the bottle that you just walked past with “92” points on it and be good? Buyer Beware! There are MANY organizations that put points on a bottle of wine. ALL of it is for marketing, BUT there is a way to use the system with a little experimentation. Pay attention to the organization putting those points on that bottle. Buy at least three bottles of the same type of wine, say a Cab Sav from California, all with 92 points on it, from three
different point givers, such as Robert Parker, Wine Enthusiast, etc. Each of the points givers have their own way of grading wines, so find the organization that seems to match what you like. If Wine Enthusiast seems to do it for you then when you see that 92 points from Wine Enthusiast on the bottle as you are racing through the grocery store there is a much higher chance that you will like it. Will it be amazing every time? No. Will you like it every time? Hopefully. All of this is predicated on storing the wine correctly, even for the next four days; no sun light and a constant cool temperature. And, no matter what wine you buy, serve that wine at the correct temperature! Good luck, and cheers to drinking a good wine at home.
Here in Pensacola, we are known for our coastal charm, and exceptional lifestyle, yet we also face significant challenges with poverty. Many families and individuals struggle to meet basic needs, and thankfully there are several organizations and programs that are dedicated to providing transitional support and resources to help them achieve stability and self-sufficiency.
Dove’s Nest, Inc. a new nonprofit in the field, is motivated to create opportunity for individuals that would otherwise not have any. It was started by Nolan Siverio and Darreyel Laster, friends and business partners, with a vision to address and improve the poverty crisis in our community during a time when the numbers are at its highest in the country, since the Great Depression.
One of their main focuses is to equip individuals with life skills and employment opportunities, with the intention of helping break the cycle of poverty. Transitional assistance not only offers a lifeline but also empowers individuals to regain control of their lives, fostering a stronger, more inclusive community.
Their holistic approach helps address immediate crises while paving the way for long-term improvement. They try to encourage self-motivation by insisting on certain requirements of accountability to remain within the program.
The organization is currently looking for a permanent transitional house in an accessible location. This matters, according to Darreyel, “because everyone should be able to access healthy food and services. You shouldn’t have to buy your groceries at the corner shop.” Dove’s Nest is looking for other organizations and philanthropic groups to join their cause. For more information call: (850)816-0861.
