A Season To Savor
October is here, and with it comes crisp air, colorful leaves, and the perfect excuse to gather around the table. Our Food & Drink Issue is all about celebrating the flavors, places, and people who make dining in our community so special.
This month, we remember and honor the life of John Iachetti—a beloved chef, restaurateur, and friend whose warmth and passion for food touched so many. His legacy at Iachetti’s Kitchen reminds us that great meals are as much about connection as they are about flavor.
We also take you inside the newly owned and beautifully renovated 103 Prime, where fresh energy meets timeless dining. From there, we stroll through the River Vale Farmers Market, where every stand tells a story—of local growers, fresh ingredients, and the joy of shopping close to home.
And if authentic Italian food is on your mind, Lanni’s Cucina Verace delivers an experience that feels like a warm hug from Nonna herself. Of course, food is also about caring for those in need, and Family Promise of Bergen County shows us how our community comes together to make sure every neighbor has a seat at the table.
Whether you’re discovering a new restaurant, picking up fresh produce, or cooking a family recipe, October is the perfect time to savor every bite and share it with the people who matter most. I hope this issue inspires you to explore, taste, and connect—because food is one of life’s greatest invitations to slow down and enjoy the moment.
Here’s to good meals, great company, and a season full of flavor.

Remembering John Iachetti
A Beloved Chef, Restaurateur, and Friend to the Community
As part of our October Food & Drink Issue, we want to pay special tribute to John Iachetti—a partner, friend, and true culinary force in our community. The Pascack Valley community mourns the sudden and heartbreaking loss of John, the beloved owner and chef of Iachetti’s Kitchen in Glen Rock, who passed away unexpectedly on July 20 at the age of 60. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of many, and we honor his legacy this month with gratitude and love.
John was more than a talented chef—he was a pillar of the community, known for his infectious smile, generous heart, and unwavering commitment to making people feel welcome.
Iachetti’s Kitchen became more than just a restaurant—it was a neighborhood gathering place where customers became friends and meals were served with warmth and purpose.
Since opening the restaurant in 2018, John quickly became a local favorite. His signature blend of comfort food with a creative twist drew people in, but it was his presence that kept them coming back. Whether working the line or greeting guests personally at their tables, John had a way of making everyone feel at home.
Beyond his culinary talents, John was deeply involved in giving back. He regularly donated food and support to local events, charities,

and causes. His loss is felt not only by his family and friends but by the countless lives he touched with his kindness and authenticity.
Those who knew John describe him as “one of the good guys”—a family man who led with love and lived with purpose. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled, but his legacy will continue to inspire.
To support the Iachetti family during this difficult time, donations can be made through the official GoFundMe page at gofundme.com/f/support-cheryl-and-family-after-johns-passing.
John Iachetti will be remembered always—for his food, his friendship, and his unforgettable spirit.

THE RIVER VALE FARMERS MARKET
THE TOP SPOT FOR FRESH FINDS AND COMMUNITY CONNECTION IN THE PASCACK VALLEY
ARTICLE BY NICOLE ZAMLOUT PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY SALIB AND JESSICA SCULLY
The River Vale Farmers Market is more than just a place to shop— it’s where community thrives in the Pascack Valley. Held weekly from May through November at 406 Rivervale Road, the market features food trucks, local artists, kids’ activities, and, of course, fresh local goods. It’s become a Thursday tradition and a staple for weekly to-do lists across the area.
Currently managed by Amy Salib and Jessica Scully, the market continues to evolve, serving as a vibrant gathering space for neighbors and visitors alike. For our October "Food & Drink" issue, we caught up with Amy and Jessica to learn more.
1. WHAT MAKES THE RIVER VALE FARMERS MARKET STAND OUT FROM OTHERS IN THE AREA?
We're one of just a few markets in the Pascack Valley, and we see ours as a hidden gem—not just for River Vale, but for our surrounding neighbors too. Since River Vale borders nine towns, including Montvale, Park Ridge, Hillsdale, Woodcliff Lake, Westwood, Emerson, Harrington Park, Old Tappan, and even Pearl River, N.Y., many nearby residents find it’s just a short drive.
Being open on Thursday afternoons shapes our market to fit the rhythms of midweek life. We welcome everyone—from preschoolers and caregivers looking for a fun outing, to middle schoolers grabbing snacks after school, to remote workers strolling over for lunch. We see retired folks and stay-at-home parents meeting friends for lunch in our bistro seating area, and other professionals who leave work a little early on Thursday just so they make it in time for our “golden hour” from 5-6 pm.
If you watch closely, you spot shoppers in a hurry, grabbing dinner before sports. Other people slow down when they arrive and take in the community atmosphere, the live music, and the beautiful weather.
2. WHAT VENDORS CAN SHOPPERS EXPECT EACH WEEK?
As a weekday market, we often have shorter lines and more product availability than weekend events. We curate a mix of consistent vendors and rotating participants to keep the experience fresh. Our 2025 lineup includes:
Core vendors: Fresh produce, dairy, meats, pickles, baked goods, breads, empanadas, ice cream, Italian ice, and coffee.
Part-time favorites: Lobster entrees, bao buns, lemonades, soups, salads, donuts, bubble tea, and candles.
Guest Appearances: Artisanal Pork & Beef Sausages, Mozzarella Based Entrees, Kimchi, Spirits (alcoholic), Charcuterie, Indian Foods & Spices, Argentinian Treats, Glazed Nuts, Kosher Foods, Kettle Corn, Dirty Sodas, Crochet Items, Bath & Body products, Jewelry, and more—with new vendors signing on each week.
3. TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE ACTIVITIES AND FEATURES OF THE MARKET (LIVE MUSIC, CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES, ETC.)?
We offer a rotating schedule of children’s activities, often themed or sponsored by local businesses. From balloon animals to mini golf (a 6-hole course created through an Eagle Scout project), we’re always finding ways to entertain families. Our pool of Duplo bricks is also becoming a bit of a market icon.
Our live music program adds to the ambiance, showcasing talent ranging from local teens to renowned musicians. One special highlight: Pascack Valley High School’s Chamber Jazz Band has performed alongside their musical director’s professional band. Some grads even formed their own group and returned to play during college breaks. It’s just another great perk to stopping by the market – and another way to make some memories in town.
4. DOES THE MARKET OFFER SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES?
We absolutely offer sponsorships to businesses and already have an impressive list of generous donors in the local area. We work closely with each sponsor to develop the best marketing strategy within our packages.
The River Vale Farmers Market gives back to the community through several initiatives, including blood drives.
The River Vale Farmers Market has a variety of unique offerings, such as delicious microgreens
Kids of all ages can enjoy The River Vale Farmers Market's many offerings, including their great mini golf course.
Next year, we are looking for some companies to exclusively sponsor our Live Music Program so that we can continue to host and pay local musicians every week for providing amazing musical programming to our community. As this is a new program, the initial sponsors will have some say in what the sponsor benefits look like.
5. BEYOND BEING A GREAT PUBLIC SPACE, HOW DOES THE RIVER VALE FARMERS MARKET SUPPORT LOCAL NONPROFITS?
We see the Farmer’s Market as more than a marketplace. It’s really a community hub. It’s a place where people in town regularly gather, and it provides an opportunity for local organizations to connect with Pascack Valley residents. When our nonprofits attend our market, they are not charged a fee.
We have nurses who offer blood pressure screenings. We have trauma department teams that teach about hot topics in emergency rooms: bike safety, water safety, teen driving, and medicine dosage measuring – to name a few.
Spectrum for Living comes with arts and crafts created by clients and residents of the program – all proceeds go back to the artists individually.
Scouts pursuing Eagle Scout and Gold Awards come and fundraise for their projects, and/or table for awareness for their causes.
The River Vale Library does a spin-to-win activity while they promote their summer reading program and recruit volunteers for the Friends of the Library organization.
In the summer, one of our market dates is centered around a Bloodmobile drive with Vitalant. Our market vendors donate food item “treats” to be given to all blood donors that day. We are proud to say we collected 26 units of blood this year. It’s the best day for a foodie to sign up to save some lives!
We have two food banks that come occasionally to collect for their pantry: Helping Hand Food Pantry and St. Andrews Food Pantry. We also support the nonprofit Table to Table, which works behind the scenes with some of our vendors to pick up overages of food that may be otherwise thrown away. They quickly distribute it to people with food insecurity.
We sometimes have special events for nonprofits: we sold strawberry shortcakes for the RVVAC’s drive to get a new ambulance and we sold “picked and grilled the same day” corn on the cob last year – all money raised went to the Table to Table organization.
We are always open to figuring out more ways to support our local nonprofits.
6. WHAT NEW ACTIVITIES ARE COMING TO THE MARKET THIS FALL?
Our market is full of incredible tastes and smells that encourage everyone to unpack their sweaters and embrace the season! You’ll find cider, hot chocolate, soups, corn, breads, pumpkins, apples, pies, spices, chai – so many flavors to warm your heart.
Some noteworthy things to look out for include pumpkin decorating, “be a wizard” tea making, henna for Diwali, balloon animals, face painting, grilled corn day, Halloween candy collections, and our famous “Thanksgiving Market” on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. If you want a farm-fresh turkey, talk to Farmer Greg in October!
7. WHAT CAN SHOPPERS EXPECT FROM THE MARKET NEXT YEAR?
There’s no telling what next year will bring—and that’s part of the fun. With over 40 small businesses involved, the market constantly evolves. We stay flexible to meet our vendors’ needs and listen closely to what shoppers are loving. There is no way to predict what will be at the market next year, but there will be unpredictable things – there always is. That makes the market so exciting!
We do anticipate our customer community growing next year as our social media and marketing increased, our vendor list is larger, and we recently won Bergen Magazine’s 2025 Reader’s Choice Award in the Farmer’s Market category.
Overall, we’re proud to offer the variety of a weekend market—without the weekend crowds. We support our local nonprofits and give local businesses exposure in a balanced way that doesn’t take away from the market atmosphere. We love a theme, a gimmick, incredible photos of products (taken by us or our customers), and comments and follows on Instagram! You can absolutely expect to see those next year.
For the latest updates, visit rivervalenj.org/page/farmersmarket or follow @rivervalefarmersmarket on Instagram and the official Township of River Vale Facebook page. If you are interested in discussing sponsoring the market or the Live Music Program in 2026, please email culturalaffairs@rivervalenj.org.

The decor and ambiance of Lanni's truly makes it a standout

Lanni's offers a variety of wines from all over Italy
Vittorio and Kim Lanni are ready to
Looking for a new date night destination or upscale spot to explore this fall? Lanni’s Cucina Verace's refined menu—rooted in Italy’s diverse culinary regions—makes it a standout choice.
Vittorio and Kim Lanni had been in the restaurant industry for years before stepping away to become sommeliers. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, they felt the call to return, leading to the 2023 opening of Lanni’s in Sparkill.
Their mission? To bring an elegant, fine-dining experience to the Sparkill area and beyond. Kim focused on executing that vision through elevated design and a curated liquor program.
“We really wanted to feature the different regions we visited in Italy and highlight each one’s distinct liquors at Lanni’s,” Kim said. “I wanted to add that Italian flair to the customer’s experience.”
That regional influence is what sets Lanni’s apart— even from their more casual sister restaurant, Trattoria da Vittorio, in Piermont. With a glamorous, jewel boxlike atmosphere, Lanni’s elevates the experience from the first sip to the final course. It’s fine dining, redefined.
The community has responded in kind. Lanni’s has built a loyal clientele of more than 150 VIP guests and was named Best Italian Restaurant by Hudson Valley Magazine.
This fall, the restaurant is debuting a new seasonal menu inspired by Northern Italy. Expect to see hearty dishes like wild boar ragù, porchetta, their signature rabbit entrée, and other rich, game-forward fare.

“The most rewarding thing is seeing people leave happy and smiling. We have customers that go to both restaurants. Knowing that, when we open those doors, they choose us to celebrate life’s moments— that’s everything.”- Vittorio Lanni
White truffle season is also in full swing, and Lanni’s makes the most of it—shaving delicate truffle slices over pastas, steaks, lobster, and even gelato. It’s a surprising and decadent twist that has earned rave reviews.
Of course, guest favorites remain on the menu, all crafted with fresh herbs from the garden Kim tends out back. The grilled salmon and the 15-layer eggplant parmigiana are just a few of Kim’s personal go-tos.
Vittorio’s top picks include the veal chop tomahawk, beef carpaccio, and ever-popular Chilean sea bass. The mozzarella trio— each variety representing a region of Naples—is also a must. And for a refined appetizer, don’t miss the 30-month aged prosciutto served with melon, mint salad, and lemon.

Lanni’s lunch menu offers just as much variety, with standout items like the Italian burger and lobster roll making it a great destination any time of day.
But the food isn’t the only star. The four-course wine tasting menu is another highlight—available Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays—and features your choice of red or white wines from Sicily, perfectly paired with a decadent dessert.
No matter the day or dish, the Lannis remain passionate about what they do. Seeing their guests happy and returning again and again remains the most meaningful part of their journey.
“The most rewarding thing is seeing people leave happy and smiling,” Vittorio said. “We have customers that go to both restaurants. Knowing that, when we open those doors, they choose us to celebrate life’s moments—that’s everything.”
With heartfelt hospitality, seasonal cuisine, and a transportive atmosphere, Lanni’s Cucina Verace is the perfect fall dining destination.
Lanni’s Cucina Verace is open for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-4 and for dinner on Tuesday-Saturday from 5-10pm and Sundays from 4-8pm.

Family Promise's volunteers work tirelessly to help change lives one meal at a time
ONE MEAL AT A Time
Family Promise’s mission to house and feed residents in Bergen County is more than just a job for Executive Director Kate Duggan and Board President Paul Shackford — it’s a calling.
Shackford began volunteering shortly after it was established more than 38 years ago as the Interreligious Fellowship for the Homeless of Bergen County, committed to ending homelessness through a community-based approach. Duggan first became involved as a volunteer, helping with the organization’s Thanksgiving efforts. Inspired by the work, she eventually left her career as an audiologist to become Director of Volunteers. Today, she leads the organization alongside Shackford, helping expand its reach and programs.
As the fall season unfolds, Family Promise’s busiest initiative — the Walk-In Dinner Program — remains front and center. The program provides hot, nutritious meals every single night to those in need, served from the Bergen County Housing, Health and Human Services Center in Hackensack.
How Family Promise Helps Feed Our Community
ARTICLE BY NICOLE ZAMLOUT
Most of the meals are supplied by local congregations and businesses, which prepare and deliver the meals directly to the shelter; about 30% of the meals are purchased through donations to Family Promise. Volunteers serve about 50 meals to residents of the shelter in the dining room, and 100 or more to people from the community who come to receive the free meals to-go at the center’s loading dock. Duggan and Shackford are proud to say the program has never missed a day — not even during hurricanes, blizzards, or the pandemic.
“People have told us we’ve saved their lives,” Shackford said. “That this is the only meal they’ll get all day. That we’re the only people who treat them with dignity — sometimes the only people they’ll talk to that day. We’re building a community that looks out for one another, and that’s a beautiful thing.”
Community is at the heart of everything Family Promise does. That sense of community is why these programs at Family Promise have continued. Not only is it consistent with their housing initiative, but it also provides a way to truly connect with Bergen County residents as they continue to fulfill their mission to address homelessness.
“Because the dinners are free, people can use the money they save to pay their rent. In that way, this dinner program is, in essence, a homeless prevention program,” Duggan said.
In September 2025, the program served its 1.5 millionth meal — a milestone that symbolizes how impactful these consistent efforts have become. But for Duggan and Shackford, it's never been about the numbers.
“The most rewarding part of it all is seeing someone come to the dock and tell us it’s their last time — because they’ve found a new apartment or a new job,” Duggan said. “It means they’re moving forward, and that’s always amazing to see.”
Family Promise’s Walk-In Dinner Program is located at the Bergen County Housing, Health and Human Services Center at 120 South River St in Hackensack from 4:45 until 5:50 each day.

103 Prime
ARTICLE BY NICOLE ZAMLOUT

Bringing New Cuisine to a Pascack Valley Staple
Husband-and-wife team Teresa and Vincent (Vinny) Russo of 103 Prime haven’t just crafted a new menu for this beloved local restaurant—they’ve brought a renewed sense of home to the Pascack Valley dining scene.
For Vinny, hospitality runs in the family. He grew up working alongside his father at the legendary Casa Dante, a Jersey City institution still drawing loyal patrons today. In 1997, he opened The Valley Regency, a premier catering hall in Clifton, building a reputation for impeccable service and elevated cuisine. But even after decades of success in catering, Vinny felt the pull to return to the kind of restaurant he grew up in—a place where the kitchen is the heart, the tables are always full, and the guests feel like family.
That opportunity came in 2024 when Vinny and Teresa—longtime customers of 103 Prime—took over ownership. With a vision to refresh the space without losing its familiar charm, the Russos renovated, revitalized, and reimagined the restaurant. Now celebrating their one-year anniversary at the helm, they’ve brought new energy, a refined menu, and the same warm welcome locals have always loved.
With the guidance of their longtime friend and manager Fabio, 103 Prime now leans more heavily into authentic Italian cuisine, featuring classics such as stuffed mushrooms, eggplant parmigiana, and an array of handcrafted pastas. Many recipes have been lovingly updated—like the fried calamari, now prepared using Vinny’s father’s original recipe from decades ago.
And while the menu showcases these Italian favorites, 103 Prime proudly continues its tradition of expertly prepared steaks. Guests can still enjoy tender cuts, from juicy filets to perfectly marbled ribeyes, making it a destination for both steak lovers and Italian cuisine enthusiasts.

“There’s no better feeling than walking over to a table, asking how everything is, and hearing that the food, the ambiance, and the staff were wonderful. That’s when you know you’ve done your job right.”
- Teresa Russo
Vinny’s personal favorite? The delicate, fresh Dover Sole. Teresa, meanwhile, swears by the tender crabcakes and rich Rigatoni Bolognese—both perfected by their talented kitchen team.
What truly sets 103 Prime apart is its willingness to tailor the dining experience. Guests can call ahead to request a special dish—perhaps seasonal soft-shell crab or another craving—and the team will do their best to make it happen. This flexibility, paired with their elevated menu, means every visit can feel like a custom culinary experience.
For Teresa, Vinny, and Fabio, these personal touches are the heartbeat of their work.
“There’s no better feeling,” Teresa said, “than walking over to a table, asking how everything is, and hearing that the food, the ambiance, and the staff were wonderful. That’s when you know you’ve done your job right.”
Vinny agrees. “At the end of the day,” he said, “what’s most rewarding is making people happy.”
As autumn settles in, 103 Prime continues to evolve—welcoming both familiar faces and new guests to enjoy meals that feel like a celebration.

Maximize Your Home Sale: What Every Seller Needs to Know About the New Commission Rules
By Slava Zborovsky, Slava Realty Group powered by Christie’s International Real Estate
The recent NAR settlement has sparked a lot of questions and concerns in the real estate world, particularly regarding how commissions will be handled moving forward. Initially, I, like many in the business, wasn’t sure what the big deal was. For years, I have negotiated full commissions for my listings, typically 4% or 5%, which were then split with the buyer’s agent. However, upon closer consideration, I began to realize the opportunities this new approach offers—especially in our local New Jersey market.
One of the most significant changes is the flexibility it introduces for sellers. In the past, commissions were essentially locked in; while we could negotiate the total commission, the buyer’s agent portion was relatively fixed. Now, sellers can be more strategic. There’s no longer a requirement to disclose how much you’re offering a buyer’s agent upfront. For instance, what if the buyer’s agent is willing to work for 1%? Or what if they bring a fantastic offer but ask for 3%, and the net to the seller is still better? Sellers now have more room to negotiate based on the value that buyer agents bring to the table.
Another benefit for sellers is the possibility that buyers may decide to cover their agent’s fee entirely. Especially in today’s competitive market with limited inventory, buyers are eager to make their offers more attractive. One way to do that is to absorb the cost of their agent’s commission, making the deal even sweeter for the seller.
This flexibility is particularly useful in markets like New Jersey, where inventory is tight, and homes are selling rapidly. In this environment, sellers hold most of the power and can negotiate every part of the transaction, including commissions. However, if the market shifts and inventory increases, sellers might need to start offering to cover part or all of the buyer’s agent commission as an incentive to draw in offers. The key here is being strategic with the terms and finding ways to maximize the seller’s net profit. This new landscape emphasizes more than ever the importance of working with the right real estate professional. It’s no longer just about putting a house on the market and waiting for offers to roll in. It’s about having the expertise to negotiate commissions and terms that protect your bottom line. As agents, our job is to craft a strategy that maximizes the seller’s return, whether it’s negotiating down the buyer’s agent fee or finding creative ways to attract buyers without sacrificing the seller’s interests.
The NAR settlement also brings more transparency for buyers. Now, buyers will need to sign formal representation agreements with their agents before home tours, clearly outlining the fees involved. This benefits both buyers and sellers by ensuring clarity from the start, but it also means that working with an experienced agent who can navigate this more complex process is essential.
From a buyer’s perspective, these changes present both challenges and opportunities. Firsttime buyers, who are already facing financial pressures, might find it harder to cover their agent’s commission on top of down payments and closing costs. However, more experienced buyers may see this as a chance to negotiate fees with their agent or request that the seller cover part of the commission. Ultimately, the flexibility offered by this new approach can be an advantage to both sides if navigated correctly.
Pricing is another area that could be affected by these changes. With sellers no longer required to pay the buyer’s agent commission, they may adjust their listing prices accordingly. In hot markets, we could see prices decrease slightly as sellers save on commissions. However, in buyer-heavy markets, sellers might increase their prices to offer incentives like covering the buyer’s agent fees. Again, the key here is strategic negotiation to ensure the best deal for the seller.
In summary, while the NAR settlement brings significant changes to how commissions are handled, it also offers new opportunities for sellers to take control of their expenses and negotiate better deals. In a market as dynamic as ours, working with a knowledgeable real estate professional who understands these shifts is crucial to maximizing your returns.
