Navigating the Next Chapter: Downsizing Tips for Empty Nesters in Pascack Valley
By Slava Zborovsky, Slava Realty Group powered by Christie’s International Real Estate
As a seasoned broker with Christie’s International Real Estate in Westwood, NJ, I’ve had the privilege of assisting numerous empty nesters in the Pascack Valley area as they transition to a smaller home. Downsizing can be an emotional and challenging process, but with the right guidance and approach, it can also be an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. Here are some invaluable tips to help empty nesters navigate this important milestone:
Start Early and Plan Strategically: Downsizing is not a decision to be made hastily. Begin planning well in advance to allow sufficient time to sort through belongings, make decisions, and prepare your home for sale. Create a timeline and checklist to stay organized and on track throughout the downsizing process.
Declutter with Purpose: One of the most crucial steps in downsizing is decluttering your current home. Take inventory of your belongings and identify items that hold sentimental value versus those that are no longer needed. Consider donating, selling, or gifting items that you no longer use or need. Remember, less clutter means less to pack and move to your new home.
Stage for Success: Staging your home is essential to attract potential buyers and maximize its appeal. Remove personal items and excess furniture to create a clean, spacious, and inviting atmosphere. Highlight the unique features of your home and showcase its potential as a comfortable and functional space for the next chapter of your life.
Find the Right-Sized Property: When searching for a smaller home, prioritize your needs and preferences. Consider factors such as location, amenities, layout, and affordability. Work closely with your real estate agent to explore available options
in the Pascack Valley area that align with your lifestyle and budget. Remember, downsizing doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or quality of life—it’s about finding the perfect fit for this new phase of your journey.
Embrace a Fresh Start: Downsizing is an opportunity to simplify your life, focus on what truly matters, and embrace a fresh start. Embrace the positive aspects of downsizing, such as reduced maintenance, lower expenses, and newfound freedom to pursue your passions and interests. Surround yourself with belongings and memories that bring you joy and create a space that reflects your unique personality and style.
In conclusion, downsizing can be a transformative experience for empty nesters in the Pascack Valley area. By approaching the process with careful planning, decluttering with purpose, staging for success, finding the right-sized property, and embracing a fresh start, you can navigate this transition with confidence and excitement. As your trusted real estate advisor, I am here to support you every step of the way and help you find the perfect home to begin the next chapter of your journey.

Local coffee shops are greater than just a simple cup of coffee - they play a key role in building our communities, strengthening the local economy, and creating social networks.
Of course, the coffee (and the sweets) must be incredible. Recently, I visited five of your local Pascack Valley favs, and here’s why they hit the spot:
Five local favs!

BARISTAS TOUCH, FREYJA COFFEE SHOP
1. THE BARISTA’S TOUCH IN HILLSDALE
This Hillsdale gem is a short distance from the train station and the vibrant downtown. The ambiance is relaxed, hip, and friendly. Gorillaz’s Demon Days played from their record collection as Anthony and Carly greeted guests with chilled conversation. There are several inviting seats with tables and a bar to also sit at to enjoy your well-crafted cup of joe, with wifi for getting some work done. Owner/ barista Anthony is a true coffee aficionado, with unrivaled skills. Their growing customer base loves their huckleberry iced lattes with huckleberry
syrup and the cold brew with cold foam. A reverse osmosis water system was installed to make sure their coffee is created with the purest water possible. Their smooth and lightly sweetened Shakerato (an Italian-styled shaken espresso) is a must-try. There’s even a “secret” menu that regulars get to know. Enjoy their sweets: the lemon bar and apricot crumb cake are to die for! Baristas Touch recently received a design update at the end of August to give it a moodier, speakeasy vibe. Be sure to visit for the classiest, artistic coffee around!
Anthony’s fav: the orange blossom espresso tonic | Carly’s fav: the cold brew

The Barista’s Touch
2. FREYJA COFFEE SHOP IN WESTWOOD
New to the coffee scene with a perfect location facing the park, you’ll find Freyja. Freyja is a mythological Nordic goddess - a symbol of power, love, and celebration. Mother and daughter duo, Iliyda and Filiz, embrace these wonderful qualities while welcoming customers with the perfectly crafted coffee, tea, home-made sandwich, baklava, or pastry (some from Balthazar bakery). There is a clean and
bright vibe, where customers are called “friends” and treated with care. A cozy back area has wifi and plenty of seating. Some of their most requested drinks include the brown sugar cinnamon latte, matcha latte, and strawberry matcha latte. “Freyja’s Friends” book club highlights a range of enchanting books each month, celebrating the owner’s love of literature.
This family-friendly shop is well-established. Baristas warmly greet their guests with a huge selection of coffees, lattes, and teas, including many seasonal specials. The shop has a superfriendly and welcoming vibe, with games on the tables, a fun jukebox, unique gift items for purchase, and so much more. The huge menu features delicious sandwiches, avocado toast, croissants, and smoothies. The shop truly caters
to their audience. Barista Erin shared, “There are crafts for kids on Fridays, and on some Sundays we have some special events. We also have kid’s reading hours.” There are seasonal drinks to enjoy. This warm and homey environment feels just-right for a leisurely coffee with family or friends, while also being a great spot to get some work done while enjoying a smooth coffee, wifi, and a delicious bite to eat.
Sylvia’s fav: coconut crème and blueberry | Erin’s fav: the vanilla latte
Il Freno Espresso Bar is a charming spot with friendly baristas, and a perfect location near the train stop. Perfectly named (“il freno” means “brake” in Italian) the shop is co-owned by the same folks as the Cyclesport bike store up above, Michael and Tracy Grotz, which was voted “Top 100 Stores in America”. The vibe is slick and casual with a NYC meets Italy feel. It’s a wonderful place for enjoying your morning coffee, cappuccino, or tea on your way to the train. It’s also a comfy place to relax and get some work done with wifi or meet up with a friend. The sweets are divine- their raspberry crumb bar is delicious, as is their lemon bread. Healthy choices include oat bites with jelly filling and Aussie bites with apricot and sunflower seeds. Scrumptious scones are home-made on Mondays and croissants are available on weekends. Barista Jana shared that regulars love a traditional espresso and iced lattes with their sweets. Recently, the shop had a “coffee with a cop” event in May. Seasonal drinks and sweets add to the charm.
Jana’s fav: Iced pistachio latte
Location: 81 Park Ave, Park Ridge, NJ 07656 (201) 856-8036 | www.ilfrenoespressobar.com @ilfrenocafe
5. TAIMOCA - MONTVALE
In the heart of Montvale, Taimoca is the perfect welcoming spot for your cuppa. Reflecting the heritage of the founder, Taimoca celebrates the Taino tribe habitants of the Dominican Republic. “Moca” is their word for coffee, and the classy logo on their cups is an image of a Taino princess picking cacao fruit from a tree. The spotless shop is filled with scents of smooth coffee and many healthy sweets to pair with it. Barista Lester clearly loves creating drinks for customers, sharing, “Many customers enjoy a cinnamon latte, which is my own personal favorite”. Strawberry-banana smoothies are also a huge hit with the locals - there are many smoothie options. There also are many healthy options to eat: protein bars, almond biscotti, and fresh salads to round out your options. Seasonal drinks are available from beans sourced by the owner in the Dominican Republic.

DINE WITH VERANA IN NORWOOD
“We’re not just serving food; we’re redefining Italian cuisine in New Jersey.”
- Robert Briskin
Verana in Norwood offers a fine dining experience that is anything but ordinary. When three culinary aficionados from New York—Robert Briskin, Tommy Demaras, and Chef Giuseppe Agostino Jr.— decided to set up shop in the suburbs, they weren’t just aiming to replicate Manhattan’s famed dining scene; they wanted to redefine it.
FROM THE BIG APPLE TO THE GARDEN STATE
It all started with a simple yet ambitious goal: to redefine dining out in the suburbs. "We were hoping to build a place not only that we would be able to enjoy for ourselves but to bring everybody up to speed in this area," Briskin explains. "From both a culinary point of view and service point of view, we felt that it was something very special in the suburbs as opposed to Manhattan."
Verana in Norwood doesn’t just serve meals; it creates experiences. As Briskin boldly puts it, "We're not just serving food; we're redefining Italian cuisine in New Jersey.”
A MENU THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES
At Verana, the menu is a testament to Chef Agostino's Italian heritage and global culinary journey. Having honed his skills at Michelin-starred restaurants in Italy and Manhattan, Agostino brings an unparalleled authenticity to his dishes. “What we’re serving at Verana in any part of New Jersey is truly unique,” says Agostino. His approach? It’s all about respect—respect for ingredients, for tradition, and for the craft of cooking itself.
Take, for instance, their Tuna Carpaccio. This dish is not just a feast for the eyes but
“It’s paramount that we use the freshest, finest ingredients.”
- Chef Giuseppe Agostino Jr.
Carpaccio di Tonno
a culinary revelation. "We deconstruct traditional Sicilian pesto to create a fresh, modern take on it," Agostino shares. Imagine tuna so thinly sliced it nearly covers the entire plate, garnished with almonds, tomato confit, and a touch of lava salt. It’s a dish that pays homage to the land of its inspiration while celebrating local flavors.
LOCAL FLAVORS, GLOBAL STANDARDS
Verana in Norwood’s commitment to excellence extends beyond the kitchen. Ingredients are sourced with meticulous care, from artisanal producers on Long Island to local farms in New Jersey. Agostino emphasizes, “It’s paramount that we use the freshest, finest ingredients. The respect for the ingredients is what sets us apart.”
Whether it’s the seasonal tomatoes from Eckerton Hill Farms or the top-tier seafood from trusted vendors, every element on the plate is a result of rigorous selection and a passion for quality. This dedication to sourcing ensures that every dish served at Verana is not only fresh but also a testament to the finest culinary standards.
A COMMUNITY AFFAIR
One of the most heartwarming aspects of Verana is its deep-rooted connection with the local community. Briskin mentions, “The community has been super supportive. Since the first day, we’ve been pretty much sold out.” It’s not just about filling seats; it’s about creating a space where people feel they belong. From impromptu celebrations to intimate dinners, Verana is quickly becoming a cherished local institution. Guests appreciate not just the food but also the genuine warmth and attentiveness of the staff. This connection extends beyond the dining experience; it’s about being part of people’s lives and contributing to their special moments.
A TRADITION IN THE MAKING
As Verana approaches its second anniversary, the future looks bright. “We hope to become a tradition for people,” Briskin says with a hopeful tone. They aim to be more than just a restaurant; they want to be a part of their guests’ lives, celebrating milestones and creating lasting memories.
With plans to expand their menu and continue innovating while honoring their Italian roots, Verana is set to solidify its place as a beloved dining destination. So next time you find yourself longing for an extraordinary dining experience without the trek to Manhattan, remember Verana in Norwood. As Agostino puts it, “We want to create memories and be a part of people’s lives.” And with their impeccable blend of elegance, innovation, and heartfelt service, they are well on their way to doing just that.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PATTY CONNELLY, JEANETTE DONNARUMMA
Jeanette Donnarumma’s Fresh Take on Success
Jeanette Donnarumma’s career trajectory is a testament to the surprising twists life can take when you're open to new opportunities. An Emmy-award winning producer for her work on the Rachael Ray Show, Donnarumma has seamlessly transitioned from high-profile television production to establishing her roots and thriving in her local Bergen County community.
Donnarumma’s journey began in a rather unconventional manner. “I was studying biology and communications at Marymount Manhattan College when a friend suggested I intern at a brand-new talk show—Rachael Ray,” she recounts. Living just a street away from the studio, Donnarumma decided to give it a shot. “I rolled out of bed at 7:55 and made it to the studio by 8:00. I never left after that,” she says with a laugh.
Starting as an intern, Donnarumma climbed the ranks to become a supervising producer, contributing to the show’s success for 16 and a half seasons. “It was an incredible ride. We even won an Emmy together,” she says proudly. However, when the show wrapped up in the spring of 2023, Donnarumma faced a new chapter in her career and personal life.
With two young children at home, Donnarumma found herself reassessing her career path. “I was ready for a change,” she admits. “The long commute into the city
Jeanette Donnarumma's ' Mini charcuterie tree'
and the demands of a full-time TV career were starting to take a toll.” Serendipity struck when a production company reached out with a new opportunity. “They offered me a role in Charleston for a Food Network program. It was a chance to explore a different part of the country while continuing in the media field,” she explains. And most recently taking on a new venture in digital media production in Englewood Cliffs. This move not only allows her to stay closer to home but also to immerse herself in the evolving landscape of digital media.
Now back in her beloved Bergen County, Donnarumma is not only enjoying the perks of a shorter commute but also diving into community life with enthusiasm. She and her family relocated to Ridgewood in 2016, drawn by the area's charm and excellent schools. “We saved every penny to move here because we knew it was the right place for our family,” Donnarumma says.
Her passion for community extends beyond her family life. Donnarumma runs a small catering business, Salami and Sharks Catering, where she provides meal preparation services and creates unique food displays like her popular antipasto Christmas trees. “I found that a lot of my business comes from local referrals. The community here is incredibly supportive,” she notes.
This support has been a cornerstone of her business. “The level of community engagement here is unmatched. People drop off dinners, offer to babysit, and truly care about one another,” she says. This local camaraderie has been pivotal for her business, especially as she juggles her roles as a mother and a professional.
When she's not catering or working on media projects, Donnarumma enjoys exploring Bergen County with her family. “We love the local eateries and parks. It’s the perfect blend of convenience and community spirit,” she says. Her husband, who works in Newark, also benefits from their strategic location.
In reflecting on her journey from television producer to local entrepreneur, Donnarumma is both grateful and optimistic. “It’s been a whirlwind, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The community here has embraced me and my business in a way I never expected. It’s truly been a rewarding experience,” she concludes.
Donnarumma’s story shows how embracing change and nurturing local connections can lead to fulfilling personal and professional growth. For more information visit jeanettedonnarumma.com.

A LOCAL LANDMARK’S JOURNEY

As Davey’s Irish Pub marks its 50th anniversary this year, the story of this cherished Bergen County institution is a testament to its appeal and deep-rooted connection with the community. Founded in 1974 by Peter Davey, the pub has transformed from a modest, run-down establishment into a vibrant hub of local life in Montvale.
Tommy Davey reflects on the early days of the pub with a sense of nostalgia. "My dad bought the place when I was just two years old," Davey recalls. "He was bartending in Queens after emigrating from Ireland and wanted to own his own business. When he found this place, it was a bit rough around the edges, but he saw potential." The family lived above the pub in its early years, gradually transforming it into the welcoming venue it is today.
Over the decades, Davey’s has undergone several renovations to maintain its charm and appeal. In the 1980s, the pub introduced Sunday brunches and a non-smoking dining room—innovations that helped it transition from a biker bar to a family-friendly restaurant. The most significant overhaul came about 20 years ago, with a complete renovation featuring mahogany woodwork, new flooring, and an updated facade. "Each renovation
Traditional Shepards Pie
aimed to improve the experience while retaining the essence of what makes Davey’s special," Davey explains.
The pub’s consistent atmosphere and service have been central to its long-term success. "It’s all about consistency," Davey notes. "Our customers know exactly what to expect when they come here, and that reliability is a significant part of why they keep coming back." This consistency has fostered a strong sense of community among the pub's patrons, many of whom have made Davey’s a regular part of their lives. "We have
“We have generations of families who come here regularly.” - Tommy Davey
generations of families who come here regularly," Davey says. "People often refer to it as their 'second living room.'"
Community involvement has also been a cornerstone of Davey’s success. The pub's location at the border of Park Ridge and Montvale has made it a central gathering place for locals. "My parents were very involved in the church and local schools," Davey recalls. "Their natural, organic networking helped build a loyal customer base that has grown over the years." The pub’s reputation as a family-friendly venue
is reinforced by its role in celebrating milestones like first legal drinks and birthday parties. "Kids love coming here for their birthday celebrations," Davey adds. "We make a big deal about it, and that makes them feel special."
The family-centric nature of the business is also reflected in its staff. Davey’s team includes several family members, adding to the pub’s warm, personal touch. "It’s a family affair here," Davey says. "My sister Sarah manages the pub with me, and many of my nieces and nephews work here too." This strong family presence contributes to the pub's welcoming atmosphere and consistent service.
In the heart of every cherished family tradition is a special ingredient, and at Davey’s, that ingredient is Chef Russell Chapman. Having joined the team at 18, Chef Chapman has been the Head Chef for an impressive 40 years. His dedication to his craft is evident in every dish he creates, from his inventive specials and unique sandwiches to his beloved Soup of the Day, made from scratch daily. Each week, he also delights guests with a new Burger of the Week, a testament to his culinary creativity. This week’s burger, beautifully captured by our photographer, exemplifies his talent for crafting mouthwatering meals that keep patrons coming back for more.
Davey’s plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a series of special events. "We're kicking it off with a parking lot party for the last weekend in September," Davey reveals. "There will be dancing and festivities, and then in November, we’ll host an indoor celebration
Irish Beer Battered Fish and Chips
with a raffle and giveaways for our regulars." These events aim to honor the pub's legacy while bringing the community together for a memorable celebration.
As Davey’s continues to thrive, its legacy of community, consistency, and family remains central to its success. "It makes me proud to see how my parents built this place
and how it has evolved," Davey reflects. "We’re looking forward to celebrating this milestone and continuing to be a part of the community for years to come."
For those interested in joining the festivities, keep an eye on local announcements for details on the anniversary celebrations at www.daveyspub.com.

COMMUNITY Faith and
OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH IN PARK RIDGE
ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS
Father Vincent D’Agostino, pastor of Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Park Ridge, sheds light on how the church serves as a vibrant center for community and faith. Established in 1903 as St. Mary’s Church, the parish moved to its current location in the early 1960s, with the new church building completed in 1962 and the name changed to Our Lady of Mercy. "The growth of the congregation led to the need for a larger church," D’Agostino explained. "We first built the school, Our Lady Mercy Academy, and then the church."
PHOTOGRAPHY BY OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
D’Agostino, who has been with the parish for four years, brings a unique perspective to his role. Hailing from Belleville, he followed an unconventional path to the priesthood. After earning his degree from Rutgers University and New York Law School and working as a lawyer for two decades, he entered the seminary at age 44 and was ordained in 2016 at the age of 50. "I felt a calling to the priesthood from a young age, though it took me a while to act on it," D’Agostino shared. "Now, I’m honored to serve this dynamic community."
Our Lady of Mercy is more than a place of worship; it’s a hub for community engagement. "Our goal is to make everyone feel welcomed and supported," D’Agostino said. The parish runs various outreach programs, including the Good Samaritan Ministry for transportation and basic daily needs, the Serenity Fund for urgent financial support, and the Hearts and Crafts Ministry, which provides prayer blankets for those undergoing chemotherapy and other struggles.
The church also emphasizes youth and family involvement, offering a youth group, young adult gatherings, and events for families. "From movie nights to bowling events, our activities are designed to bring people together and strengthen our community," D’Agostino explained.
With initiatives extending to visiting nursing homes and welcoming individuals of all walks of life, D’Agostino underscores the church’s commitment to inclusivity. "In a world that can feel divided, our church aims to be a sanctuary where everyone feels valued and connected," he said.

1. WHAT SPARKED YOUR PASSION FOR COOKING AND INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE SWIRLS OF FLAVOR?
My passion began with earning my Girl Scout Cooking Badge for scalloped potatoes. After culinary school and decades in various culinary roles, starting Swirls of Flavor in 2013 was a way to organize my recipes, which unexpectedly grew into a business.
2. HOW DO YOU DEVELOP NEW RECIPES TO ENSURE THEY ARE EASY AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY?
I prioritize simplicity and accessibility, using fresh ingredients and clear instructions. My process involves researching food trends, balancing flavors, and perfecting the recipe. Engaging with readers on social media helps inspire new dishes.
3. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE INGREDIENTS FOR CREATING FRESH AND SIMPLE DISHES?
I love working with fresh fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and seafood. Using a variety of spices and seasonings adds depth and flavor to simple, wholesome ingredients.
4. HOW DO YOU ENGAGE WITH YOUR AUDIENCE THROUGH YOUR BLOG AND SOCIAL MEDIA?
I stay connected by sending email newsletters and meal plans, responding to comments, and interacting on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and X. This engagement provides inspiration and keeps me attuned to readers’ preferences.
5. CAN YOU SHARE A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FROM YOUR TIME RUNNING SWIRLS OF FLAVOR, ESPECIALLY INVOLVING FAMILY?
Making homemade pasta with my family is a treasured tradition. Starting with my grandma and cousins, I now make it with my sons and grandkids. The simple recipe and the joy of creating it together are priceless.
6. HOW DO YOU BALANCE BLOGGING WITH OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR LIFE, AND WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED?
Balancing full-time blogging with previous consulting work has been challenging, especially with SEO and adapting to algorithm changes. The flexibility of blogging helps manage this, but it requires constant learning and adjustment.
7. HOW DO YOU BELIEVE FOOD CAN BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER, AND HOW DOES THIS INFLUENCE YOUR RECIPES?
Food has the power to unite people. I design my recipes to be easy and family-friendly, encouraging shared meals and creating delicious memories with loved ones.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR SWIRLS OF FLAVOR?
I’m excited about a cookbook set for 2025 and the launch of a new food product. These projects mark significant steps for Swirls of Flavor.
