How Jose Siandre Helps Brighten Up Homes In North Jersey
Jose Siandre’s passion for helping homeowners enhance their spaces has been a lifelong journey—one that continues to evolve with every new client he serves. After his military service in the U.S. Coast Guard and Navy, Siandre ran Blue Eyed Blinds, an independent blind repair and cleaning service. But after years of seeing sales slip away due to limited offerings, he pivoted—transitioning from technician to full-time design consultant.
Now, as the local owner of Made in the Shade North Jersey, Siandre is combining his expertise with the resources of a national brand to bring high-quality, customized window treatments to homes across Bergen, Passaic, and Morris counties.
Although the business officially launched in March 2025, early support from both the national team and the local community helped Siandre hit the ground running—landing his first project almost immediately.
“I always say, ‘Think of us as the fairy godparents of window treatments,’” Siandre shared. And it’s easy to see why. From stylish blinds and draperies to motorized shades, Made in the Shade offers transformative solutions that make any space feel brand new.
Their decorative offerings include shutters, layered shades, and unique window grills—perfect for filtering light while adding personality to your home. But the company’s services go far beyond interiors. Their outdoor patio shades, awnings, and pergolas blend style with functionality, making summer entertaining more comfortable and enjoyable.
For homeowners preparing for warmer months, Siandre recommends one of the company’s most in-demand products: motorized roller shades.
“These are by far the most popular,” he said. “They come in a variety of textures and fabrics, and the best part is that they
Motorized
can be motorized—controlled by a remote or through an app on your phone.”
The roller shades help filter the sunlight, allowing for a brighter room without worrying about the Sun’s intensity. Siandre’s tips extend to your backyard as well, recommending patio shades which can help keep mosquitos away. They also help with temperature control, ensuring you are always comfortable no matter where you are on a summer’s day.
What sets Made in the Shade apart is the ability to transform spaces both aesthetically and practically.
“Seeing a room go from ‘meh’ to magnificent is so rewarding,” Siandre noted. “The creative process is what I enjoy most—working with clients to select the right fabrics, textures, and features for their homes.”
Made in the Shade brings light to our community in more ways than one. In addition to his interior design work, Siandre is passionate about supporting autism awareness—an effort close to his heart as a father.
Whether inside your living room or out on your patio, Made in the Shade North Jersey is committed to delivering elevated spaces that feel both personal and polished—one window at a time.

Antique American Five Dollar Bill
ASK THE APPRAISER
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY JON FELZ -SENIOR APPRAISER
In this feature, we hear from Jon Felz, an expert appraiser from RZM Fine Arts & Antiques, who provides valuable insights on evaluating prized possessions. Have something you're curious about having appraised? Reach out to Jon for a chance to have your items featured in a future "Ask the Appraiser" column.
NOTE TO APPRAISER:
Thank you for writing this much-anticipated column. It is quite enjoyable, not to mention informative to read. The photos I've sent off to you are of what we believe was a five-dollar bill that my mother may have overlooked when she sold off my deceased father's collection of antique American money. My father was a long-time collector of paper money and had assembled quite a collection over many years. After my mom died last year, we emptied her safe-deposit box, and this was found in an old yellow envelope. The envelope was marked; 'SAVE!" As I mentioned earlier, we thought my father's entire collection had been sold off over 15 years ago.
As you can see by the pictures I've sent, this bill is in mint condition, still tight or crisp, as they say. Can you please send us some information about its value? A little history relative to this item would be greatly appreciated as well. We might even consider selling it off, as none of our children want it. Looking forward to your response.
-Susan B.
APPRAISAL RESPONSE:
You are in possession of a Beautiful Series of 1899 "Horse Blanket" Five Dollar Silver Certificate Note. Right off the bat, please allow me to tell you about the powerful engraving of Running Antelope, Chief of the Oncpapa Lakota Sioux Indians. This was the first and only time a Native American image was used as the central design on any United States currency.
Please notice the central vignette of Running Antelope is highlighted by the bright, vibrant blue seal and a large "V" denoting the note's denomination. When this particular note was issued, it did cause some controversy because the headdress Running Antelope is pictured wearing was for a Pawnee Indian chief. The Pawnee Indians were mortal enemies of the Oncpapa Indians. Apparently, the engravers at the United States Mint were not aware that the Lakota and Pawnee Indians were enemies. A bit of research shows the correct headdress would have been too tall for the engraving plate, so that was the reason the incorrect headdress was used.
Your five-dollar note is one of my favorite pieces of US currency and one of the most popular currency notes of all time. Maybe, just maybe, this might have been the reason your mother decided not to sell this particular item with the rest of the collection. This note is the perfect blend of United States
history, with beautiful artwork from the period, to form an interesting American artifact.
After examining this note, I agree with you as to its condition. The note appears crisp, clean and damage free, with nice square corners. Still maintaining wonderful vibrant colors throughout. No staining or dirt noted. Certainly, a high-grade example.
As I frequently mention in this column, it should be professionally certified and graded by a third-party grading company. It is the only means that will enable this item to realize its full potential when being offered for sale. If this note grades in the excellent uncirculated condition category, and I'm sure it will, the current value for a note of this quality is $3,500 USD. This value is based on past auction results.
A note of this quality should only be sold through an auction house that specializes in rare United States currency in order for it to realize its full potential. I can supply you with the names of the two best auctions in this field that I use on a regular basis. Thank you for sharing such an important item with us.

Embrace the natural sweetness of sun-ripened fruits and the invigorating zest of garden-fresh herbs. From crisp berry infusions to fragrant herbal blends, enjoy the art of crafting delicious and revitalizing beverages that celebrate the fresh flavors of summer.
THE “HERBAL COCONUT” PIÑA COLADA

• 2 oz. Coconut Rum
• 1 oz. Pineapple Juice
• .5 oz Coconut water
• 1 oz. Cream of Coconut.
• A few fresh mint leaves
• Optional: A few fresh basil leaves.
• Ice
• Garnish: Mint sprig, and a pineapple chunk.
Instructions:
Muddle the mint and basil leaves in the bottom of the blender. Add the remaining ingredients and ice. Blend until smooth and pour into a glass. Garnish with fresh fruit and herbs
This sangria emphasizes fresh garden herbs and the sweetness of seasonal berries.
Ingredients:
• 1 bottle wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio or Garnacha)
• ½ cup brandy or rum
• ½ cup elderflower liqueur
• 1 cup sparkling water
• 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
• ½ cup fresh raspberries
• ½ cup fresh blueberries
• ¼ cup fresh mint leaves
• 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary
• 1 cucumber, thinly sliced (optional)
• 1 lime, thinly sliced
Instructions:
In a large pitcher, combine the white wine, brandy (or rum), and elderflower liqueur. Stir gently to mix. Add the sliced strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mint leaves, rosemary sprigs, and cucumber slices to the pitcher. Gently muddle the berries and herbs slightly to release their flavors. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld. Just before serving, add the sliced lime and sparkling water or club soda. Stir gently. Serve the sangria over ice, ensuring each glass gets a mix of fruit and herbs.
GARDEN HERB &BERRY SANGRIA
ROSEMARY GRAPEFRUIT PEAR FIZZ
This cocktail balances the tartness of grapefruit, the sweetness of pear, and the distinct notes of rosemary, all brought together with a bubbly finish.
Place the rosemary sprig in a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle the rosemary to release its oils. Add the gin (or vodka), grapefruit juice, pear liqueur and lime juice to the shaker. Add ice. Shake well until thoroughly chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice. Top with sparkling water or Prosecco. Garnish with a rosemary sprig, a grapefruit slice, and a pear slice.
LIME MINT
ROSE MOJITO
A Lime Mint Rose Mojito adds a floral twist to the classic mojito, creating a refreshing and elegant cocktail. Here’s a recipe that balances the traditional lime and mint with the delicate aroma of rose.
Ingredients:
• 10 fresh mint leaves
• 1 lime, cut into wedges
• 2 tablespoons white sugar (or simple syrup, to taste)
• 2 ounces white rum
• 1 ounce rose water (adjust to taste, as it can be potent)
• Club soda or sparkling water
• Garnish: Mint sprigs, lime wedges, edible rose petals (optional)
Instructions: Muddle:
Place the mint leaves and lime wedges in a glass. Add sugar. Use a muddler to gently crush the mint and lime. Pour the white rum and rose water into the glass. Stir well. Fill the glass with ice. Top with club soda or sparkling water. Stir gently. Garnish with a mint sprig, a lime wedge, and, if desired, edible rose petals.
Summer Ice Cream Bliss
Charlie Brown said it perfectly: “Happiness is…two kinds of ice cream”.
The summer warmth of July is a perfect excuse to celebrate all of the joys of ice cream!
Ice cream’s creamy texture is calming, cools you down instantly, and serves as the perfect treat to boost your mood while giving you an extra dose of calcium and vitamin D. It gives you that all-over “summery” joyful feeling. And the taste? Well, who doesn’t love ice cream?
Luckily for us, our area has an abundance of incredible ice cream shops to explore - each one is unique with its own perfect stories to tell. Bursting with nostalgic charm and modern freshness, here are five shops to check out:

Candy is the heart of their business from Fall through Easter, while ice cream is celebrated from the Monday after Mother’s Day throughout the summer months. That is when it transforms into an old-fashioned ice cream parlor and soda fountain, complete with a charming counter and booths. Their nostalgic walk-up window is alive each summer with happy faces waiting for the perfect scoop!
This truly adorable-looking establishment is a real gem on Westwood Avenue. Conrad’s cherishes tradition, their employees, and their community. Those same high standards have
been in place for almost 100 years, with superb ingredients and craftsmanship, as all ice cream and candies are made right onsite. This family business creates magical ice cream, with pieces of their incredible candy mixed right in some of the flavors. All in all, every sweet tooth is sure to be satisfied.
This popular summer spot is sure to please and is worth the wait!
Since 1959, Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ice and Ice Cream has been beloved by all those lucky enough to enjoy it. Immediately cooling down a hot summer day in NYC after a stickball game, his ices and ice creams were a quick favorite and brought in the crowds!
Uncle Louie G’s ices and creams are still all made in NYC, in Staten Island, as pure as summer itself.
Everyone still loves his over 80 original recipes, and we are lucky enough to enjoy them right here in Park Ridge!
These mouth-watering treats are a cooling hit at their adorable blue and white striped building location, with indoor seating for cooler months. In the summer, enjoy their comfortable outdoor seating, which is complete with beach chairs and tables, with white stones on the ground to give a beachy feel. Dairy Queen - Montvale
Chances are that if you grew up in this area, you have many memories of pulling into the Dairy Queen in Montvale for a summer treat! The location is the oldest Dairy Queen in all of NJ and will bring you back to the 1950s.
In fact, the location has been owned by the Stoll family since 1957 and is a family treasure. You’ll see the same pop-up window for placing your orders and plenty of parking near the small building.
Who doesn’t remember eating their Blizzard while sitting with your windows down as a kid? It really was (and is) the perfect destination for a treat once you finally have your driver’s license! It’s one of those treasures in life that doesn’t change.
And nothing beats the sweet indulgence of DQ blizzards, shakes, and ice cream sundaes with a cherry on top - a touch of childhood. Blizzards can be customized with all kinds of candies (be sure to try the Snickers, Heath bar, or Reese’s!) Their strawberry, chocolate, or caramel sundaes are also perfection. Each cooling bite is worth every calorie!
The location is “cash only”, so be sure to keep that in mind.
Your senses will delight in the incredible, delicious smells of fresh cream and cookies as you walk into Stack Creamery in Westwood.
Stack Creamery is known for its sweet and creamy flavor selection and its decadent ice cream sandwiches. They are rich and indulgent, with the ice cream of your choice piled high between two cookies of your choice. Then it is rolled in your choice of many sweet or crunchy toppings - oh-so-scrumptious! All cookies are made fresh daily on site.
Everything is customizable at Stack Creamery. Enjoy sundaes with different scoops of any of their flavors with toppings galore. FROM STUCK TO UNSTOPPABLE
Natasha Siegel
After 13 years building a successful career in medical devices, Natasha Siegel found herself asking the question so many high achievers avoid answering: Is this really it? That moment sparked a deeper realization—she didn’t just want success, she wanted purpose. She wanted to help people grow, to make an impact beyond metrics and titles, and to turn her personal evolution into a guide for others.
HOW NATASHA SIEGEL HELPS BUSINESS OWNERS TURN FRICTION INTO FIRE
ARTICLE BY NICOLE ZAMLOUT PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLARA WANG PHOTOGRAPHY
She had checked all the boxes—corporate title, team leadership, financial success—but felt a calling for something more personal, more meaningful. In true entrepreneur fashion, she left it all behind to pursue a deeper kind of growth—first in herself, and now, in the businesses she helps transform.
What started as life coaching for professionals evolved into a powerful niche: helping business owners get unstuck by resolving the emotional and strategic tension between cofounders or business partners. Her method? A unique blend of mindset coaching, business consulting, and partnership mediation that helps turn friction into fuel.
“Most people think their partnership problems are personal attacks,” Siegel says. “But the real issue is often unspoken resentment, mismatched visions, or a breakdown in trust. That’s what we uncover together. When business owners feel emotionally drained, it affects their decisions, their team culture, their business, and it ultimately consumes their entire life.”
Siegel works with founders who are at a crossroads—torn between scaling the business or walking away. Many of them feel like they’re carrying the weight alone or battling a partner who no longer feels like a teammate.
“Exploring is choosing to move forward not despite the unknown, but because of it.”-Natasha Siegel
But her clients don’t just get conflict resolution—they get clarity, strategy, and momentum.
“My job is to hold a mirror up to what’s really going on—and help you shift out of reaction mode into creation mode. That’s how you build something powerful again, whether you decide to fix the partnership or exit it cleanly.”
To Siegel, exploration isn’t about aimlessly wandering. It’s about having the courage to uncover the answers to your uncertainty through action.
“Exploring is choosing to move forward not despite the unknown, but because of it,” Siegel remarked.
Her work is rooted in deep listening, emotional intelligence, and the belief that
how we handle friction in relationships— especially in business—shapes everything.
Siegel’s own life is a constant exploration. She’s married and raising three daughters, which has deeply influenced her coaching approach—teaching her to navigate high-stakes emotions, competing priorities, and the power of communication with grace and clarity, and often draws on those personal experiences to help clients navigate the complexity of growth, relationships, and decision-making under pressure.
“Everyone just wants to feel heard and understood,” she says. “And that includes you. But if you’re always trying to win the conversation, nobody wins. Curiosity is what unlocks progress.”
From helping overwhelmed moms and professionals in career limbo to CEOs facing million-dollar decisions, Siegel’s coaching style is bold, intuitive, and refreshingly real.
“Like most entrepreneurs, I started this business because I realized I had the solution to a major problem,” she adds. “I truly believe anything is possible—for anyone—with the right guidance and action. I’ve had incredible mentors who helped me get here, and now I get to be that guide for others. Coaching is so powerful. Even with all my training, experience, and tools, I still need a coach to help me see my own blind spots sometimes. We all do.”
Now based in Woodcliff Lake, Siegel works with business owners both locally and across the country. Her signature program "Friction to Fire" walks founders through a guided process to evaluate their partnership, clear the emotional fog, and make high-stakes decisions that result in a win-win. She adds, "Once the friction is resolved, we turn it into fire—and take their business to the next level."
The most rewarding part?
“Watching a client who felt stuck, resentful, or overwhelmed shift back into their power. That moment when they say, ‘I’ve got this now’—that’s everything.”

B&B Pool & Spa Center embraces the use of green technology in their installations
A nighttime glimpse at B&B Pool & Spa Center's work
DIVING Deep
B&B Pool and Spa Center has been helping families in Bergen County set up and maintain their pools for years —and this summer is no exception. Though B&B Pool and Spa was founded in 1972, the Bagin family has been in the pool industry for generations. Derek Bagin is the latest to take on that legacy of excellent construction service, joining the family business right after graduating college.
Years later, Bagin has continued to build and maintain high quality in ground pools for residents of the Pascack Valley. While the pool industry as a whole has remained largely the same, Bagin’s focus on his clients has truly helped B&B Pool and Spa stand out.
B&B Pool and Spa Is Set to Help Your Pool Stay Cannonball Ready This Summer

B&B Pool & Spa offers complimentary water testing, allowing you to know the state of your pool in minutes
“For a lot of contractors in the older days, the customer was not always their top priority,” Bagin explained, “but nowadays, the customers need more attention.”
That attention and personalized service has helped B&B Pool and Spa grow in meaningful ways, even as it continues to specialize in building, servicing and maintaining pools, hot tubs, and just about anything involving moving water in your backyard.
One major evolution in their offerings is a shift toward UV and ozone water treatments. These newer treatments can help sanitize your pool water while using a lower concentration of chlorine and other harmful chemicals, delivering the same great results as conventional methods without the harsh side effects.
As summer heats up, Bagin encourages homeowners to start pool maintenance early, as getting everything swimmer-ready can take time.
He also cautions families to keep an eye on the weather. Severe weather, especially rain, can cause major damage to a pool, so Bagin advises to take the time after a storm to properly reset your pool through rigorous cleaning and treatments.
With just a few smart steps, families can keep the good times flowing all summer long. For Bagin, those moments are the most rewarding, granting families great new memories with each project.
“The most rewarding part of my business is seeing the completed project,” Bagin mentioned, “Going from meeting the clients to seeing their kids jump in and enjoying the final product is amazing. It is also pretty cool to watch a backyard go from nothing to an oasis the family can enjoy.”
That dedication to quality and joy is what keeps B&B Pool and Spa Center thriving— year after year, and splash after splash.

Maximize Your Home Sale: What Every Seller Needs to Know About the New Commission Rules
By Slava Zborovsky, Slava Realty Group powered by Christie’s International Real Estate
The recent NAR settlement has sparked a lot of questions and concerns in the real estate world, particularly regarding how commissions will be handled moving forward. Initially, I, like many in the business, wasn’t sure what the big deal was. For years, I have negotiated full commissions for my listings, typically 4% or 5%, which were then split with the buyer’s agent. However, upon closer consideration, I began to realize the opportunities this new approach offers—especially in our local New Jersey market.
One of the most significant changes is the flexibility it introduces for sellers. In the past, commissions were essentially locked in; while we could negotiate the total commission, the buyer’s agent portion was relatively fixed. Now, sellers can be more strategic. There’s no longer a requirement to disclose how much you’re offering a buyer’s agent upfront. For instance, what if the buyer’s agent is willing to work for 1%? Or what if they bring a fantastic offer but ask for 3%, and the net to the seller is still better? Sellers now have more room to negotiate based on the value that buyer agents bring to the table.
Another benefit for sellers is the possibility that buyers may decide to cover their agent’s fee entirely. Especially in today’s competitive market with limited inventory, buyers are eager to make their offers more attractive. One way to do that is to absorb the cost of their agent’s commission, making the deal even sweeter for the seller.
This flexibility is particularly useful in markets like New Jersey, where inventory is tight, and homes are selling rapidly. In this environment, sellers hold most of the power and can negotiate every part of the transaction, including commissions. However, if the market shifts and inventory increases, sellers might need to start offering to cover part or all of the buyer’s agent commission as an incentive to draw in offers. The key here is being strategic with the terms and finding ways to maximize the seller’s net profit. This new landscape emphasizes more than ever the importance of working with the right real estate professional. It’s no longer just about putting a house on the market and waiting for offers to roll in. It’s about having the expertise to negotiate commissions and terms that protect your bottom line. As agents, our job is to craft a strategy that maximizes the seller’s return, whether it’s negotiating down the buyer’s agent fee or finding creative ways to attract buyers without sacrificing the seller’s interests.
The NAR settlement also brings more transparency for buyers. Now, buyers will need to sign formal representation agreements with their agents before home tours, clearly outlining the fees involved. This benefits both buyers and sellers by ensuring clarity from the start, but it also means that working with an experienced agent who can navigate this more complex process is essential.
From a buyer’s perspective, these changes present both challenges and opportunities. Firsttime buyers, who are already facing financial pressures, might find it harder to cover their agent’s commission on top of down payments and closing costs. However, more experienced buyers may see this as a chance to negotiate fees with their agent or request that the seller cover part of the commission. Ultimately, the flexibility offered by this new approach can be an advantage to both sides if navigated correctly.
Pricing is another area that could be affected by these changes. With sellers no longer required to pay the buyer’s agent commission, they may adjust their listing prices accordingly. In hot markets, we could see prices decrease slightly as sellers save on commissions. However, in buyer-heavy markets, sellers might increase their prices to offer incentives like covering the buyer’s agent fees. Again, the key here is strategic negotiation to ensure the best deal for the seller.
In summary, while the NAR settlement brings significant changes to how commissions are handled, it also offers new opportunities for sellers to take control of their expenses and negotiate better deals. In a market as dynamic as ours, working with a knowledgeable real estate professional who understands these shifts is crucial to maximizing your returns.
If you have any questions about how these changes could affect your buying or selling strategy, feel free to reach out to me, your local real estate specialist. I’m here to help you navigate this evolving landscape and ensure you make the most informed decisions possible.
