ACHIEVE Home Care

The Achieve Home Care Agency Team

In the ever-evolving landscape of home healthcare, Achieve Home Care Agency stands out for its commitment to compassionate, holistic care. Founded with a mission to provide quality services to those in need, Achieve Home Care has grown to meet the diverse challenges faced by clients and their families.

INSPIRING FOUNDATIONS

The inspiration behind Achieve Home Care is simple yet profound: to ensure that individuals receive the care they deserve. "Our goal is to help clients restore balance in their lives and enjoy a high quality of life," says the agency’s Founder and Executive Director, Chris Pableo. This mission has evolved to encompass not only physical care but also emotional and mental well-being, fostering an environment where clients can thrive.

REWARDING EXPERIENCES

The team at Achieve Home Care finds fulfillment in their work through the impactful moments they create. One memorable instance involved a rapid response to a hospital intake situation. After receiving a call for urgent assistance, the team mobilized quickly to arrange 24-hour care for a client recovering from a serious illness. The client eventually returned to his professional life, exemplifying the agency's dedication to improving quality of life.

COMPASSIONATE CAREGIVERS

Achieve Home Care takes pride in its unconventional hiring practices, focusing not only on qualifications but also on the personal connections formed with caregivers. "I meet potential hires where they are comfortable, whether it’s at their home or in my car," Pableo explains. This approach fosters trust and ensures that caregivers embody the compassion essential for effective client care.

UNIQUE SERVICES

Achieve Home Care is a dual-certified homecare agency, a distinction that not all agencies in the area hold. The agency is certified to provide both Companion/ Personal Care Services (CPCS) and

Founder and Executive Director, Chris Pableo

Community-Based Skilled Nursing (CBSN). What truly sets this agency apart is their unwavering dedication to offering a comprehensive, value-based, and continuum care approach for both clients and their families. This includes handling long-term insurance reimbursements, assisting with facility placements, connecting clients to homecare rehabilitation services, and providing ongoing nurse monitoring and assessments—all at no financial cost to clients or their families, alleviating financial and logistical burdens.

ADDRESSING EMOTIONAL NEEDS

Achieve Home Care adopts a comprehensive approach to client care that includes emotional and mental well-being. Care plans are tailored to individual needs, with a focus on fostering genuine connections. The team emphasizes active listening, ensuring that clients feel heard and understood. Family involvement is also crucial, with regular updates and open communication keeping loved ones engaged in the care process.

SUCCESS STORIES

This decision ultimately led to the client's recovery and return to daily life, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to prioritizing well-being over profit.

STAYING CURRENT

Achieve Home Care remains dedicated to best practices in the industry, adhering to regulations from the New Jersey Department of Health and the Commission on Accreditation for Home Care. The agency actively participates in healthcare events and values feedback from clients and families to continuously improve services.

“Our goal is to help clients restore balance in their lives and enjoy a high quality of life.”
- Founder and Executive Director, Chris Pableo

LOOKING AHEAD

GUIDANCE FOR FAMILIES

For families considering home care, the founder advises early research and understanding of options. "It's important to trust your instincts about caregivers and agencies," Pableo says. Achieve Home Care offers competitive rates, with live-in care starting at a base rate of $350 per day, a stark contrast to other agencies that may charge over $500.

One success story highlights the agency's impact: a client recovering from back surgery struggled with pain and low morale after being discharged from the hospital. Upon assessment, the Achieve team recommended hospitalization for further care rather than immediate home support.

Looking to the future, Achieve Home Care is committed to enhancing community health and wellness. The agency plans to organize events that promote awareness and engagement among seniors, striving to create a supportive environment for all.

Essential For Overall Wellness

A Passion For

Bone Health

Bone health is crucial to overall well-being. Our bones support our bodies, protect our organs, and store essential minerals like calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus, which the body releases as needed. Weak bones can lead to fractures, making bone health especially important, particularly for women.

PATRICIA DONOHUE’S PASSION

Patricia Donohue, APN, a nurse practitioner from New Jersey, is an expert in bone health. She obtained her nurse practitioner degree from

Columbia University School of Nursing. She primarily worked in trauma, surgery and the emergency room, first at Hackensack University Medical Center where she treated patients with traumatic bone injuries.

She later moved to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where she continued her work in orthopedic trauma while focusing on bone mineralization.

Through this experience, Donohue developed an interest in bone mineralization.

“I was drawn to the subject,” she says.

Her growing interest led her to earn a second master’s degree in public health.

“Bone Mineralization can affect whether or not a patient sustains a fracture,” Donohue explains. “This is especially important in the premenopausal perimenopausal, and postmenopausal, women due to estrogen loss.”

Donohue became passionate about metabolic bone health and bone metabolism. With decades of hands-on experience, she has lectured on the subject at both academic and community levels.

THE IMPORTANCE OF POST-OP CARE

While at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Donohue helped develop the Fracture Liaison Service, a program developed and supported by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the National Osteoporosis Foundation, which is now the Bone Health Osteoporosis Fountation.

“The program helps identify patients in the hospital after they've sustained fractures that may be due to bone fragility or low-energy fractures,” she says. “These are fractures that happen from everyday activities like walking or falling—not from high-speed accidents.”

This is critical because patients with fragility fractures are five times more likely to experience another fracture, leading to disability, higher healthcare costs, and even death, especially among older patients.

“We’ve seen fractures in younger patients due to poor mineralization as well,” Donohue says.

“Bone growth during childhood and adolescence is a key indicator of who will develop osteoporosis later in life. Osteoporosis affects more people than heart attacks, strokes, and breast cancer combined, yet it remains underdiagnosed and undertreated.”

Patricia Donahue, APN

“BONE GROWTH DURING CHILDHOOD AND ADOLESCENCE IS A KEY INDICATOR OF WHO WILL DEVELOP OSTEOPOROSIS LATER IN LIFE. OSTEOPOROSIS AFFECTS MORE PEOPLE THAN HEART ATTACKS, STROKES, AND BREAST CANCER COMBINED, YET IT REMAINS UNDERDIAGNOSED AND UNDER-TREATED.”

- PATRICIA DONOHUE, APN

One in two women will sustain a fragility or low-energy fracture in their lifetime, underscoring the importance of addressing bone health early.

ADVICE FOR PARENTS

Donohue advises parents to ensure their children get enough calcium, vitamin D, and exercise—especially during puberty when bones grow most rapidly.

“During adolescence, your body deposits minerals into bones, making them stronger,” she says. “Bones that aren’t loaded properly with exercises lose mineralization. The best example is astronauts in space, who lose bone mass because of the lack of gravity.”

By age 18 to 20, our bones are finished growing.

“What we have at that age is what we have to draw on for the rest of our life,” Donohue says. “That’s why it’s especially important for parents to ensure children get enough calcium and vitamin D.”

It’s also important for children to stay active.

WOMEN AND BONE HEALTH

Bone health is especially crucial for women in their 40s and 50s.

“Women can lose up to 20% of their bone mass during menopause,” Donohue says. “The women most at risk for bone fractures are those with a family history of fractures, a low body mass index (less than 18.5), or habits like smoking, excessive drinking, poor nutrition, or a sedentary lifestyle. Certain medications and conditions can also accelerate bone loss.”

Women who are at high risk or undergoing early menopause should get a baseline bone density test.

“Identifying bone loss early allows us to take action—through hormone replacement, calcium, vitamin D, exercise, and nutrition—to prevent osteoporosis,” Donohue says.

Women at high risk should follow up with another test in a year or two to monitor bone density.

SOME BONE HEALTH ADVICE

Donohue recommends that women ask their doctor or gynecologist for a bone density test—especially women who are postmenopausal (T-score) or premenopausal (Z-score).

“Women need to be proactive,” she says. “There has to be greater awareness about the importance of bone health.”

While guidelines suggest women focus on bone health around age 60 to 65, studies by the North

American Menopause Society suggest that younger women should start taking proactive steps earlier.

“Gynecologists and primary care doctors need to recognize there are lower dose estrogen alternatives, like patches and bioidenticals, that can help slow bone loss in younger women before they develop osteoporosis,” Donohue says.

FOR DONOHUE, IT’S ALL ABOUT HER PATIENTS

Now a board-certified acute care nurse practitioner at Kayal Orthopaedic Center in New Jersey, Donohue brings her passion for bone health to her patients.

“I’m from New Jersey, and this practice is unique because it offers a multidisciplinary approach, with orthopedic surgeons, chiropractors, and physical therapists all working together,” she says. “Dr. Kayal truly values bone mineralization.”

For Donohue, it’s all about helping her patients.

“I’m fortunate to be able to treat these patients in New Jersey just like I did in New York,” she says. “It’s rewarding to bring my passion and expertise to the center and to help the people of New Jersey.”

RICKY KUITERS JOURNEY TO RAISE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

100 MILES OF HOPE

Kuiters’ mantra was simple yet profound: “Do the thing unprepared.” He embraced the idea that starting something difficult without knowing every obstacle can lead to growth and inspiration.

This past August, Ricky Kuiters a Park Ridge local took on an extraordinary challenge: running 100 miles through picturesque New Jersey to raise awareness for mental health. Starting in Montclair and winding through Hewitt, Nyack, and Westwood, his journey was not just a test of endurance but a powerful message of hope and resilience.

Kuiters' motivation stems from his own struggles with mental health. Three years ago, he found himself in a dark place, feeling as if there were no way out. “I didn’t see myself coming out of it,” he recalls. But through perseverance and support, he emerged stronger and determined to help others grappling with similar feelings.

Each mile of Kuiters' run symbolized a step toward healing—not just for him, but for anyone who has ever felt lost. As he ran, he carried the weight of his past, reflecting on the importance of role models who illuminate the path forward. “Sometimes, you just need to see someone else make it,” he said.

Kuiters' mantra was simple yet profound: “Do the thing unprepared.” He embraced the idea that starting something difficult without knowing every obstacle can lead to growth and inspiration. Each mile he conquered was a testament to resilience and a chance to show others that recovery is always within reach.

As he crossed the finish line in Montclair, Kuiters raised his arms in triumph. He had done it. The journey that started with friends and family saw him finish alone in the early hours of the day. They were always there to support him, but he had to take the strides of change himself. “The comeback is always possible!” he declared, a reminder to everyone that hope is never out of reach.

Kuiters' journey not only raised vital funds for the Mental Health Association but also sparked important conversations about mental health in the community. His story is a powerful reminder that, in our darkest moments, we can find the strength to shine a light for ourselves and others.

For those inspired by Ricky’s journey, donations can be made in his honor at MHAinspire.org/donate. Join the movement and be a part of the conversation— because every step toward awareness is a step toward healin

MENTAL HEALTH WELLNESS

TOP: Dr. Ran Rubinstein, Double BoardCertified Facial Plastic Surgeon BOTTOM: Dr. Ran Rubinstein and his team.

EMBRACING Natural BEAUTY

As women gracefully navigate the aging process, seeking expert guidance in cosmetic enhancements becomes essential for maintaining a youthful yet authentic appearance. Dr. Ran Rubinstein, a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience, is at the forefront of this field, offering both surgical and non-surgical solutions tailored to women’s evolving needs.

A COMMITMENT TO NATURAL AESTHETICS

Dr. Rubinstein is a strong advocate for a balanced, natural approach to facial aesthetics. “The concept of avoiding a ‘pillow face’—an overly filled, unnatural look—has gained popularity in recent years, especially with shifting trends in Hollywood,” he says. “Today, women are more discerning about their aesthetic choices, preferring subtle enhancements that highlight their natural beauty.”

With injectables like Botox and dermal fillers becoming mainstream, Dr. Rubinstein remains dedicated to educating both patients and peers about achieving natural results. He stresses that not all fillers are created equal. Lower-cost products or improper injection techniques can result in filler migration and that feared “pillow face” effect. “The key is understanding facial anatomy, achieving balance, and selecting the right products for each individual’s needs,” he explains.

Rubinstein Plastic Surgery Center - Montvale

EVOLVING TECHNIQUES AND TRENDS

Dr. Rubinstein is committed to staying at the forefront of cosmetic surgery by continually updating his knowledge and skills. He recently completed advanced training in deep plane facelifts, a technique he believes offers more natural, longer-lasting results compared to traditional facelifts. “A deep plane facelift addresses not just sagging skin but also the underlying structures that support the face, providing results that can last up to 15 years,” he explains.

In addition to surgical procedures, Dr. Rubinstein champions the use of Sculptra, a biostimulant that helps stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. “Sculptra offers a gradual, natural way to restore lost volume without using traditional fillers,” he says. This approach not only enhances volume but also improves skin texture and elasticity, providing a more youthful appearance without the need for invasive procedures.

TRUST AND THOROUGH CONSULTATION

When it comes to cosmetic treatments, Dr. Rubinstein emphasizes the importance of trust and education. “Before committing to any procedure, it's crucial to do your research,” he advises. “Patient testimonials and before-and-after photos can give you a sense of a provider's work, but a comprehensive consultation is essential.” He suggests that a good consultation should involve a detailed assessment of the patient’s facial structure, including evaluating photographs from their youth to understand how their features have changed over time.

Dr. Rubinstein also encourages those new to cosmetic enhancements to consider starting with Botox as a way to ease into aesthetic treatments. “Botox is a great entry point because it allows patients to experience the benefits of subtle, natural-looking results,” he explains. “If a provider can achieve a natural look with Botox, they’re more likely to offer similar results with dermal fillers.”

THE FUTURE OF AESTHETIC TREATMENTS

Looking to the future, Dr. Rubinstein sees an exciting shift toward regenerative medicine and bio-stimulation techniques. “We’re only at the beginning of what’s possible with products that stimulate the body to restore its own volume,” he says. With advancements in technologies that encourage collagen production and tissue regeneration, he believes the future of cosmetic enhancements will be even more focused on natural, long-lasting results.

A PHILOSOPHY OF SUBTLE ENHANCEMENT

For Dr. Rubinstein, the goal of aesthetic treatments is not to create drastic transformations but to enhance a person’s natural beauty. His philosophy centers on precision, skill, and patient care—helping women feel confident and rejuvenated without losing the authenticity of their appearance.

Dr. Rubinstein’s approach ensures that women can embrace the aging process gracefully, with subtle, customized enhancements that maintain their unique features. His commitment to ethical practices and patient education has made him a trusted partner for those seeking timeless beauty.

When self-care and confidence go hand in hand, Dr. Rubinstein’s insights serve as a reminder that with the right guidance, every woman can embrace her beauty at any age.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH

WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS THAT A CHILD MAY BE EXPERIENCING ANXIETY OR STRESS, AND HOW CAN PARENTS EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS THESE CONCERNS?

For older children and teens, anxiety or stress often manifests as a noticeable shift in behavior. Parents may observe their child becoming more withdrawn, clingy, irritable, or disengaged from activities they once enjoyed or friends they used to spend time with. Children may also resist going to school or struggle with daily routines, such as bedtime or getting ready in the morning.

To address these concerns, parents can start by having open conversations with their child, especially if they already have a history of discussing feelings and stress. Parents can ask what’s been bothering them or express concern about changes in behavior. For children who find it difficult to verbalize their feelings, journaling or drawing can be great alternatives. These non-verbal outlets provide a safe, non-confrontational way for children to express themselves and may give parents insight into potential sources of stress.

Parents can also introduce techniques like mindfulness, breathing exercises, or sensory tools to help children manage their emotions. However, if anxiety persists or begins to significantly affect daily functioning, it may be helpful to consult a mental health professional to explore the underlying causes further.

HOW CAN PARENTS CREATE A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT AT HOME TO HELP CHILDREN MANAGE THEIR EMOTIONS AND MENTAL HEALTH?

A supportive home environment begins with parents modeling emotional regulation. Children are highly receptive to the emotional atmosphere around them and learn how to manage their feelings by observing adults. While it’s important for parents to model healthy emotional expression, it’s also crucial to maintain appropriate boundaries— children should not bear the emotional weight of their parents’ struggles.

One way to normalize emotional expression is for parents to share their own experiences in an age-appropriate way. For example, saying, “Sometimes I feel sad too. When that happens, here’s

what helps me,” can make it easier for children to open up about their own feelings.

It’s also important to avoid minimizing a child’s feelings with phrases like “just get over it” or “don’t worry about it.” Validating their emotions helps children feel seen and understood, empowering them to express their concerns and seek support.

HOW CAN PARENTS INITIATE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH WITH THEIR CHILDREN, AND WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Creating an open dialogue about emotions and mental health begins with establishing an environment where these topics are not taboo. Parents should encourage their children to talk about their feelings and validate their experiences, without dismissing or minimizing them. Sometimes, a direct conversation is the most effective approach.

Family activities, especially physical ones like walking, can provide a less formal setting for discussing emotions. Physical activity reduces stress and often makes it easier for children to talk. Play is another great way to foster connection and open conversations. Through play, children may feel more comfortable expressing their feelings and parents can model healthy emotional regulation (e.g., handling frustration during a game).

Parents should also recognize that these conversations may feel uncomfortable at times. Cultivating emotional tolerance—both for their own feelings and those of their children—is crucial for building strong emotional connections.

WHAT ROLE DOES PLAY THERAPY HAVE IN SUPP ORTING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH, AND HOW CAN PARENTS INCORPORATE PLAY INTO EMOTIONAL LEARNING?

Play therapy is an effective tool for addressing emotional and social challenges in children. Since play is the primary way children communicate, it allows them to express their feelings in a safe, structured environment. Play therapy also helps children build self-awareness, coping skills, and emotional regulation.

Parents can incorporate play into emotional learning simply by engaging in play with their children. Whether it’s imaginative play, board games, or physical activities, play helps children process emotions, develop problem-solving skills, and learn how to manage their feelings in real-world situations.

CAN YOU SHARE EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES FOR HELPING CHILDREN COPE WITH CHANGES OR TRANSITIONS, ESPECIALLY AS WE APPROACH THE NEW YEAR?

Preparing children for upcoming changes is key to reducing anxiety. While we can’t always anticipate every change, giving children advance notice and talking through upcoming transitions helps them feel more in control. For example, when planning family events or changes in routine, provide children with a heads-up and remind them as the change approaches.

Where possible, involve children in decision-making, allowing them to feel included in the process. Additionally, ensure that their schedules include unstructured downtime for play and relaxation, which is vital for emotional balance.

WHAT RESOURCES OR ACTIVITIES DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR PARENTS LOOKING TO ENHANCE THEIR CHILD’S RESILIENCE AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING?

One of the most effective ways to enhance emotional resilience is by ensuring children have ample time for free, unstructured play. This allows them to navigate and process their emotions in a natural, stress-free way.

Parents can also introduce activities that promote social-emotional learning. For example, keeping a family gratitude jar, where everyone adds notes about what they’re thankful for, can be a great way to cultivate positivity. Another favorite activity is "Rose, Thorn, Bud," where each family member shares something positive (“rose”), something challenging (“thorn”), and something they’re looking forward to (“bud”).

Books like Today I Feel Silly by Jamie Lee Curtis and Breathe Like a Bear by Kira Willey can help children better understand and express their emotions. Online resources such as Sesame Workshop and the Kids Mental Health Foundation offer valuable tools and materials to support children’s emotional development.

Taylor Walker Sinning on Wellness and Motherhood

In a fast-paced world where health often takes a backseat, Taylor Walker Sinning shines as an inspiring advocate for balanced living. A former professional dancer turned fitness model, Walker has embraced various life stages while prioritizing health—not just for herself, but for her family and community. WALKER’S JOURNEY

Originally from Long Island, Walker moved to vibrant cities such as Portland and Miami, immersing herself in the bustling fitness scene. In 2013, after winning a national fitness model search, she launched her blog, TaylorWalkerFit.com, and earned certifications in group fitness, nutrition, and pregnancy coaching. These experiences fueled her passion for wellness. As a mother, she now offers personalized fitness coaching and wellness workshops specifically for moms, helping them integrate healthy habits into their busy lives. Recently, she partnered with her friend Meryl Joshy and Drop Fitness to host strength and cardio classes, complemented by wellness discussions that explore modern motherhood. Now residing in Upper Saddle River, Walker has found her rhythm as a wellness advocate for local moms. "My brother had lived here for a few years and always raved about it," she shares. "We wanted a community-driven town with access to New York City." From Lions Park to fall festivals and the Junior Women’s Club, she has built a network of friends who feel like family. Reflecting on her journey, she notes, "When I first started booking jobs, I felt so different. Now, I see a beautiful diversity on set, which truly reflects America." This shift resonates in her community, where families of all shapes and sizes come together to support one another.

WELLNESS FOR MOMS IN THE COMMUNITY

As a mother of two energetic children, Walker understands the delicate balance of parenting. "If I'm not taking care of myself, I'm not the best mom," she explains. This mantra motivates her to treat workouts like essential appointments, highlighting the importance of her own health. She promotes healthy habits for her children without restricting their enjoyment of life. "We love our local Dunkin' Donuts," she laughs, "but we also prioritize fresh fruits and veggies."

A defining aspect of Walker’s life in Bergen County is the strong sense of community. "I finally have that village of mothers willing to help out," she said, describing how they share playdates, healthy recipes, and group workouts.

Walker recalls a challenging time: "The first year we moved here, I experienced a miscarriage, and the following year my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. My village was at my doorstep with flowers and open arms. When you’re in the trenches of life, you never forget those who show up for you." This spirit of collaboration is vital for mothers juggling family and work. "It's so important to have that support network," she emphasizes.

A PERSONAL CAREGIVER'S JOURNEY

Walker’s commitment to health extends beyond her immediate family. After her mother battled breast cancer, Walker took on the role of caregiver, relocating her mom closer to her home for better support. "Food is medicine," she says, explaining how she guided her mother in adopting healthier eating habits during recovery. This experience reinforced her belief in nutrition and wellness as preventive measures.

Her journey has inspired her to advocate for regular health screenings, a message that resonates deeply within her community. "We need to prioritize our health, especially as women," she urges, reminding everyone of the necessity of proactive health management. By sharing her story, Walker hopes to inspire others to take charge of their health.

EMPOWERING LOCAL WOMEN

In addition to her work as a fitness model and trainer, Walker is a certified hypnobirthing educator and childbirth doula. She is passionate about empowering women during pregnancy and childbirth, believing that local resources should enhance the birthing experience. "Birth shouldn’t just happen to

us; it should be an experience we actively engage in," she asserts. This philosophy underlines her commitment to supporting women in her community.

Walker is also developing a guide to educate local mothers about their choices during labor and delivery, highlighting the role of fitness and mindfulness in creating a smoother experience. "In our community, we’re all in this together," she shares, emphasizing the strength that comes from support.

A LOCAL CALL TO WELLNESS

Walker’s journey is a vibrant reminder of the power of community, resilience, and informed health choices. By sharing her experiences, she encourages families in Bergen County to embrace their wellness journeys. Whether through community fitness classes, swapping healthy recipes at farmers' markets, or enjoying local trails, Walker invites everyone to invest in their well-being.

Her message is clear: prioritize self-care, foster connections, and create a healthier future for ourselves and our children. As we navigate our own health and wellness challenges, Walker’s approach reminds us of the importance of supporting one another and celebrating our local gems.

Let’s learn from Walker: invest in our health, nurture our relationships, and build a supportive network for ourselves and those around us. Together, we can create a vibrant community focused on wellness, proving that with resilience and support, a healthier future is not just a dream—it’s an achievable reality.

FINANCIAL

The Key to a Fulfilling Retirement

As people plan for retirement, one question looms large: How do you create a financially secure future that allows for a fulfilling and active lifestyle? For many, retirement is a time to travel, spend time with family, and enjoy hobbies. But how do you ensure that your finances can support these dreams?

We spoke with Nicholas Donato Jr., a Partner at Donato Financial Group for the past 21 years. The firm has been helping clients navigate financial planning for 50 years. Donato shared insights on how financial wellness is intricately connected to mental and physical health in retirement. He also discussed how his firm supports clients in achieving not only financial security but also peace of mind.

WELLNESS

THE UNIQUE MARKET CONDITIONS AND FINANCIAL WELLNESS

According to Donato, we are currently in a unique financial environment, especially when it comes to interest rates and market volatility. “The market today offers a rare opportunity for people to upgrade older financial contracts and improve their investments,” he says. “But many advisors are complacent, not staying on top of these changes, and people don’t know that they could be improving their financial positions right now.”

For those nearing retirement or currently retired, Donato stresses the importance of understanding how interest rates and market trends affect their portfolios. “If the market has been delivering a high rate of return — like the 13% average we’ve seen in recent years — people get comfortable,” he explains. “But that could be changing. Industry experts predict stock market returns will slow to around 3% in the next decade.”

As costs of living continue to rise and inflation persists, Donato foresees more financial pressure on households in the coming years. “People are overly optimistic and complacent financially,” he warns. “That could lead to stress, especially as the cost of food, shelter, and everyday goods continues to climb. Without proper planning, this will create more pressure on people’s portfolios.”

BRINGING PURPOSE TO MONEY

At Donato Financial Group, the mission is to “bring purpose to people’s money for today, tomorrow, and everything in between.” As Donato explains, the goal isn’t just to save money, but to make it work for a fulfilling life. “A lot of times, I feel like I’m telling my clients to spend their money, rather than save it,” he says. This approach is especially relevant today, when many are focused not just on accumulating wealth, but on using it to enjoy experiences with family and friends.

“Ultimately, it’s about finding balance,” he says. “You don’t want to die with a pile of money that no one ever gets to enjoy. Life is about enjoying the moments — whether it’s traveling, sharing experiences with loved ones, or simply being able to afford the activities that contribute to a fulfilling retirement.”

THE ROLE OF SYSTEMATIC INCOME IN FINANCIAL WELLNESS

One of the key factors in achieving financial security during retirement is ensuring a predictable, guaranteed source of income. While many people think of annuities as a financial product best suited for the ultra-wealthy, Donato points out their importance for retirees seeking peace of mind.

“Annuities provide guaranteed income for life,” he says. “This ensures that no matter what happens with the stock market, your paycheck stays the same.” The idea of having a steady, dependable income stream allows retirees to continue

enjoying their lives without the constant worry of whether they’ll outlive their savings.

It’s a concept that resonates deeply with clients. “We had clients who went through the 2008 financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic, and those who had annuities didn’t have to worry,” Donato adds. “Even when the markets crashed, they still received the same income. That peace of mind is invaluable.”

HOW FINANCIAL SECURITY ENHANCES MENTAL AND PHYSICAL WELLNESS

Beyond the tangible benefits of guaranteed income, Donato highlights the profound impact financial security can have on mental and physical well-being. “Money and health are the two biggest stressors in life,” he says. “When people are worried about their finances, it affects their relationships, their physical health, and their overall happiness.”

Retirees, in particular, are prone to anxiety about running out of money, which can lead to social isolation and a decline in mental health. “When people are financially secure, they can plan trips, go out with friends, and live more active, engaged lives,” he explains. “And that contributes to a longer, healthier life.”

Donato points to clients in their 90s who are still living active, engaged lives because they’ve planned their finances well and can afford to travel and enjoy time with family. “That’s the difference,” he says. “Financial security allows you to live a life that promotes your well-being.”

TRANSITIONING INTO RETIREMENT: MANAGING EXPECTATIONS

For many, transitioning from a busy working life to retirement can be mentally and emotionally challenging. Donato suggests that a “transitional retirement” approach can ease the process. “I’ve seen clients who have successfully moved into retirement by starting a small business or picking up a part-time job doing something they love,” he says. “It’s a great way to ease the transition and keep mentally engaged, which is important for overall wellness.”

By combining a sustainable income plan with fulfilling activities, retirees can enjoy a sense of purpose even after leaving their primary careers.

PLANNING FOR RETIREMENT: IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY

While most people begin planning for retirement in their 50s, Donato stresses the importance of starting earlier. “Mid40s is a good time to start getting educated on the tools and strategies that can help you achieve a successful retirement,” he advises. “The earlier you start, the more options you have to create a plan that works for you.”

Planning in your 40s or 50s also allows for flexibility. “When you start early, you have the time to put your retirement plan in place, understand your goals, and feel confident that you can achieve them,” he adds.

WOMEN, FINANCIAL WELLNESS, AND SEEKING HELP

An important theme that Donato returns to is the role of women in financial planning. Despite stereotypes that men are more financially savvy, he finds that women are often more proactive in seeking financial guidance. “My largest clients are women,” he shares. “They’re more open to learning and tend to make better decisions when it comes to managing money.”

Donato believes that women often take a more hands-on approach to their finances, ensuring they have a clear understanding of their financial plans. This, in turn, leads to greater financial security and peace of mind. “It’s important for women to ask questions and take charge of their financial well-being, especially in the event of an unexpected life change like the loss of a spouse,” he advises.

THE ROADMAP TO A FULFILLING RETIREMENT

At the core of Donato Financial Group’s philosophy is creating a clear financial roadmap that provides confidence and clarity. Donato emphasizes the importance of understanding what each investment is meant to accomplish. Whether it’s for vacations, healthcare, or leaving a legacy, creating a purpose for each “bucket” of money can help retirees navigate their financial future with confidence.

“The number one word that comes up in retirement planning is confidence,” he says. “It’s about understanding what you have, how it works, and how it will support your lifestyle. When people have clarity and confidence, they can retire comfortably and with peace of mind.”

For those planning their retirement, Donato recommends speaking with a financial advisor who can help create a comprehensive strategy for generating income, reducing stress, and making sure that financial goals align with personal values and priorities.

As we look ahead to the new year, it’s clear that financial wellness is integral to health and happiness, especially in retirement. With a well-thought-out plan, financial security can be the foundation of a fulfilling and healthy life, ensuring that every day in retirement is as enjoyable as it is rewarding.

Maximize Your Home Sale: What Every Seller Needs to Know About the New Commission Rules

The recent NAR settlement has sparked a lot of questions and concerns in the real estate world, particularly regarding how commissions will be handled moving forward. Initially, I, like many in the business, wasn’t sure what the big deal was. For years, I have negotiated full commissions for my listings, typically 4% or 5%, which were then split with the buyer’s agent. However, upon closer consideration, I began to realize the opportunities this new approach offers—especially in our local New Jersey market.

One of the most significant changes is the flexibility it introduces for sellers. In the past, commissions were essentially locked in; while we could negotiate the total commission, the buyer’s agent portion was relatively fixed. Now, sellers can be more strategic. There’s no longer a requirement to disclose how much you’re offering a buyer’s agent upfront. For instance, what if the buyer’s agent is willing to work for 1%? Or what if they bring a fantastic offer but ask for 3%, and the net to the seller is still better? Sellers now have more room to negotiate based on the value that buyer agents bring to the table.

Another benefit for sellers is the possibility that buyers may decide to cover their agent’s fee entirely. Especially in today’s competitive market with limited inventory, buyers are eager to make their offers more attractive. One way to do that is to absorb the cost of their agent’s commission, making the deal even sweeter for the seller.

This flexibility is particularly useful in markets like New Jersey, where inventory is tight, and homes are selling rapidly. In this environment, sellers hold most of the power and can negotiate every part of the transaction, including commissions. However, if the market shifts and inventory increases, sellers might need to start offering to cover part or all of the buyer’s agent commission as an incentive to draw in offers. The key here is being strategic with the terms and finding ways to maximize the seller’s net profit. This new landscape emphasizes more than ever the importance of working with the right real estate professional. It’s no longer just about putting a house on the market and waiting for offers to roll in. It’s about having the expertise to negotiate commissions and terms that protect your bottom line. As agents, our job is to craft a strategy that maximizes the seller’s return, whether it’s negotiating down the buyer’s agent fee or finding creative ways to attract buyers without sacrificing the seller’s interests.

The NAR settlement also brings more transparency for buyers. Now, buyers will need to sign formal representation agreements with their agents before home tours, clearly outlining the fees involved. This benefits both buyers and sellers by ensuring clarity from the start, but it also means that working with an experienced agent who can navigate this more complex process is essential.

From a buyer’s perspective, these changes present both challenges and opportunities. Firsttime buyers, who are already facing financial pressures, might find it harder to cover their agent’s commission on top of down payments and closing costs. However, more experienced buyers may see this as a chance to negotiate fees with their agent or request that the seller cover part of the commission. Ultimately, the flexibility offered by this new approach can be an advantage to both sides if navigated correctly.

Pricing is another area that could be affected by these changes. With sellers no longer required to pay the buyer’s agent commission, they may adjust their listing prices accordingly. In hot markets, we could see prices decrease slightly as sellers save on commissions. However, in buyer-heavy markets, sellers might increase their prices to offer incentives like covering the buyer’s agent fees. Again, the key here is strategic negotiation to ensure the best deal for the seller.

In summary, while the NAR settlement brings significant changes to how commissions are handled, it also offers new opportunities for sellers to take control of their expenses and negotiate better deals. In a market as dynamic as ours, working with a knowledgeable real estate professional who understands these shifts is crucial to maximizing your returns.
