The Style Issue

Dear Readers,

I hope this letter finds you inspired and ready to embrace the beauty of self-expression.

Style is such an extraordinary part of life—it’s far more than the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Style is woven into every detail of our existence, from the way we decorate our homes to the art and music we enjoy, the books we read, and even how we interact with those around us.

What makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks, and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that can bridge differences and spark shared understanding.

Here in The Parkland, we’re fortunate to have endless opportunities to celebrate and explore style. Whether it’s through visiting local boutiques, supporting creative entrepreneurs, or simply drawing inspiration from our community’s culture, there’s so much to ignite your creativity and lift your spirit.

This month, I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. The most beautiful style is one that reflects who you truly are—your passions, your story, your individuality. And the incredible thing is that no one else in the world can replicate that.

So go ahead, celebrate your unique style. Whether you’re exploring new trends, blending classic elements, or creating something entirely original, let this issue inspire you to embrace the power of self-expression.

Here’s to being unapologetically and uniquely you!

Cheers!

CELEBRATE IN Style

What would you do with a little more time and energy?

Two things we never seem to have enough of—and once they’re gone, they’re gone. Imagine reclaiming the hours you’d normally spend running from store to store, lifting heavy mums and straw bales, coordinating colors, or untangling a string of lights. What if someone else took over the planning, purchasing, styling, and cleanup… so you could just show up, and enjoy?

Porches. Parties. Dinners. Events. Birthdays. Picnics. Amanda Marler and McKenzie Moss do it all—and they do it with intention, creativity, and passion. Based in Farmington but serving all of Missouri, the duo behind Pretty Porch Co.offers full-service decorating for just about any occasion. Their signature seasonal porch packages—Fall, Christmas, Spring, and Summer— include everything you could think of: pumpkins, mums, straw bales, corn stalks, greenery, wreaths, rugs, and so much more. Each setup is tailored to your home’s layout and style. You simply send a photo of your porch, share your inspiration, choose your week for installation, and they handle the rest. The process is entirely contactless. You don’t even have to be home. And when the season ends, they’ll come back to remove and dispose of any live décor responsibly.

S tep hanie Paige Photography

“Our goal is to take all the stress out of it,” says McKenzie. “You don’t have to lift a finger—we show up, do our thing, and you get to come home to something beautiful.”

The story behind Pretty Porch Co. starts not with a business plan, but with an instant friendship. Amanda and McKenzie met in 2012 through a Bible study group, both stay-at-home moms with a shared love of creativity, faith, and community, their friendship quickly became a constant in each other’s lives.

“We’ve been through every season of life together: marriage, motherhood, and now this business,” says McKenzie. “It’s really special to build something like this with your best friend.”

The business itself started on a whim. It was one of those ordinary, late-night conversations between friends that sparked an idea. After seeing a similar concept in Dallas, Amanda suggested decorating porches – just a random idea tossed out on a Thursday night. The very next morning, she bought a trunk full of pumpkins from a local produce stand and styled her own front porch. She posted a photo online and the response was immediate and overwhelming. Within 24 hours, the two friends had porch bookings, and by October 1, 2021, Pretty Porch Co. was officially launched.

“We didn’t overthink it—we just trusted our gut,” Amanda laughs. “It started with pumpkins on a porch, and it took off from there.”

As demand for their design expertise grew, so did their services. Clients began requesting help with balloon arches, custom backdrops, party styling, and special event setups. In response, Amanda and McKenzie launched Pretty Picnics—an all-inclusive experience that transforms any location into the perfect picnic celebration.

“Pretty Picnics let people slow down and be present,” says Amanda. “It’s not just cute decor—it’s creating an experience where people can connect, celebrate, and make memories.”

“WE’RE HERE SO YOU Don’t Have To CHOOSE BETWEEN BEAUTY AND BREATHING ROOM. You Can Have Both.”

Each picnic is thoughtfully designed –from the tables and pillows to the florals, place settings, signage, and custom color palettes. Whether you’re planning a girls night, a romantic date, a bridal shower, or a birthday party, Pretty Porch Co. handles every detail. Want boho and earthy tones?

Soft pastels and lace? A playful tea party setup? Done. These dreamy, one-of-akind experiences have quickly become a client favorite for creating something truly unforgettable.

Their work has taken them all over Missouri, decorating hundreds of porches along the way; but their commitment to their hometown has never changed. All pumpkins, plants, and produce are sourced from local farmers and at season’s end, what’s left is donated back to feed their animals. But their generosity goes far beyond the porch, Amanda and McKenzie regularly donate their time and services to support organizations like Help the Hungry, the Living Well Project, Strong Enough Women’s Conference, and the St. Joe Auction.

Their growth has been entirely organic. They’ve never paid for traditional advertising, relying instead on social media, word of mouth, and the kind of community trust that comes from doing good work for the right reasons.

At its core, Pretty Porch Co. is about more than decorating. It’s about carving out time for what matters most—and giving yourself permission to show up without the stress. We hire

help to clean our homes, deliver our groceries, and watch our kids—why not bring that same ease and intention to the way we gather and celebrate, reducing our loads during the busiest of seasons? When someone else handles the setup, you’re free to soak up the moment, not scramble through it. Because life moves fast—but when the pressure’s off your plate, the memories linger a little longer.

CRAFTING

BUILT FOR THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER: LEGACY SAWYER + CRAFT

The scent of sawdust hangs in the air—a warm, earthy reminder of the hands at work. Inside a quiet workshop tucked in the woods of Black, Missouri, thick slabs of walnut and hickory rest against the walls, each with their own stories waiting to be written. This is where craftsman Jake Nelson begins his process, one that’s equal parts patience, precision, and purpose.

This is where legacy begins. Not in grand gestures, but in the quiet beauty of something made well, made slowly, and made to last. At Legacy Sawyer + Craft, Jake isn’t just building furniture—he’s crafting heirlooms. His tables are a celebration of craftsmanship and an invitation to slow down and savor the moments that truly matter. And somewhere not far from here, one of his handcrafted tables is already part of someone’s story. A place where meals are shared, laughter lingers, and life unfolds— grain by grain, moment by moment.

Jake’s story begins in Yorkville, Illinois, where he was homeschooled and raised as one of seven children. With endless hours to explore, he gravitated toward the garage, where he turned scrap wood into treehouses and built Adirondack chairs to fill Craigslist orders. That early curiosity evolved into a full-fledged passion. His many years in the remodeling and custom cabinetry industry taught him the finer points of design and construction. Woodworking was more than a passion, it was a calling.

In 2022, Jake and his family relocated to Missouri in search of a quieter life, trading the noise of suburbia for wooded seclusion. That shift wasn’t just about geography—it was about intention. The move gave him space to pursue his dream full-time.

“Dining tables are where life happens,” he says. “The conversations, the laughter, the milestones—all of it happens around the table.”

JAKE NELSON HANDCRAFTS EACH LEGACY SAWYER + CRAFT TABLE FROM KILN-DRIED HARDWOOD, SHAPING EVERY DETAIL WITH AN ARTIST’S EYE AND A CRAFTSMAN’S PRECISION. NO VENEERS, NO SHORTCUTS—JUST TIMELESS DESIGN AND DURABLE FINISHES MADE TO ENDURE. THESE TABLES AREN’T JUST BUILT TO LAST, THEY’RE MADE TO HOLD THE MOMENTS THAT MATTER MOST.

For Jake, a table isn’t just a surface—it’s the heartbeat of a home. His clients are involved in every step of the fully customized process, where they get to choose everything from the wood species, size, edge style, and finish of their piece. Walnut and rustic hickory are two of his favorites for their warmth and character, but he also works with cherry, white oak, maple, alder, and many others. Occasionally, customers bring logs from their own property, which Jake transforms into deeply sentimental projects—turning raw timber into something meaningful and lasting.

His work stands apart from anything you’d find in a typical bigbox store. Every board is kiln-dried and moisture-tested to ensure stability and longevity. The solvent-based varnish he uses is commercial-grade, protecting each table’s surface from wear, water, and time. His faux live edge design, a popular option, offers the beauty of a true live edge slab without the cost or limitations of finding something organic. And for a complete look, Jake sources quality hardwood chairs from a trusted local supplier and custom finishes them himself so families can execute the vision of their entire dining space cohesively.

With an average lead time of sixteen weeks, each build is carefully scheduled to ensure quality and attention to detail. Delivery is often handled personally. Jake makes sure every piece is safely delivered and set up with care; Because while every table begins in his workshop, it’s meant to end up somewhere far more important: in the heart of your home.

But no matter how the business grows or the projects evolve, Jake’s mission remains rooted in something simple and profound: building meaningful pieces that last. Every table begins with intention and ends as an heirloom. These are not quick purchases or box-assembled mass productions. They're crafted with care, and cultivated right here in Missouri. At Legacy Sawyer + Craft, your table is made with purpose, intended to be shared with those you love the most, and passed down for generations to come.

HOW TO Style A BOOKSHELF

An empty bookshelf can sometimes feel intimidating. It’s easy to overthink and not know where to begin. These styling tips are ones I use when decorating my shelves.

1. START WITH BOOKS

A great place to start is by stacking books both vertically and horizontally to add interest and create a spot for layering.

2. FAMILY PHOTOS

Framed family photos make a shelf feel more personal and lived-in. It tells a bit of your story, which reflects real life. I like to add photos to a stack of books.

3. USE DECORATIVE OBJECTS

Bowls, vases, or sculptural accents bring texture and shape without cluttering the space. A small potted plant or faux greenery also adds warmth to the look.

4. FRAMED ART

A framed piece of art adds depth and makes the shelf feel more complete. It works well with simple pieces, such as bowls or stacked books.

Once styled, step back and see how it flows. Don’t be afraid to rearrange until it feels right. Styling is a process.

A smile. A reflection that finally feels like you— inside and out : The Glass Slipper

A Glimmer of HOPE in Every Cinderella Story

ARTICLE BY KAYLE NEPHEW
PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE ZARICOR

For some, it’s a gown. For others, a suit. For many, it’s the first time they’ve ever felt truly seen. It’s the quiet confidence that replaces doubt, the moment you stand a little taller—not just because of what you’re wearing, but because of how it makes you feel. At The Glass Slipper in Fredericktown, Missouri, this transformation happens every day—and not just in the mirror.

Offered through HOPE—Healing Our Past Experiences—The Glass Slipper is far more than a boutique. It’s a resource for anyone in need of formal wear, regardless of your social status or income. What sets this shop apart isn’t just that it offers thousands of dresses and suits at $50 or less—it’s the purpose behind it all.

The Glass Slipper began as a small pop-up effort known as The Glass Slipper Project, started by a few generous women who opened their doors four or five times a year to help marginalized children in need. After five years, that spark of kindness passed into the hands of Amber McCutcheon, who in 2023 brought the project under the wing of her nonprofit, HOPE.

Amber’s story is one of resilience turned into purpose. A survivor of childhood sexual trauma, she founded HOPE in 2017 after discovering there were no local resources to support her own healing journey. What began as a personal mission has grown into a far-reaching network of support for survivors and community members alike.

When Amber took over The Glass Slipper, there were just over 400 dresses. Today, it’s grown to more than 2,000 gowns and suits, mostly new inventory with tags— from youth sizes to plus sizes—intentionally inclusive and lovingly curated. A true one-stop resale experience. In turn, the shop has kept its original name because it perfectly captures their belief: everyone deserves their own Cinderella moment.

Here it’s not about quantity, it’s about experience. The Glass Slipper holds one open shopping day per month, but prioritizes personal appointments. Volunteers

spend time helping each guest feel comfortable and seen, guiding them to find something that not only fits, but makes them feel radiant. Clients of all ages are welcomed into a private, supportive space. There’s no pressure. No judgment. Just kindness, connection, and clothes that nurture.

But what happens at The Glass Slipper goes far beyond clothing. As part of HOPE’s mission, every dress and every conversation becomes a step toward healing. That mission shines brightly at Walk in Confidence, a fashion show launched by HOPE in 2023 to celebrate strength, and beauty across all ages, genders, and backgrounds. The event returns November 14th at The Venue at Sawyer’s Landing in Fredericktown. Participants don’t compete – they’re seen, honored, and celebrated. They help HOPE walk out their mission to raise awareness, connect individuals, and encourage healing.

“Confidence is the only thing a perpetrator fears,” Amber says. And confidence is stitched into every seam, of every ensemble.

Under Amber’s direction, HOPE has expanded far beyond The Glass Slipper—offering support groups, an online healing curriculum, and meaningful community outreach. From donating thousands of notebooks to kids at MAC’s Back to School Bash, to attending student transition fairs and hosting creative fundraisers, HOPE continues to find ways to meet people where they are, and walk with them towards healing.

Whether you’re shopping for a prom dress, a bridal gown, or a casual date night, The Glass Slipper offers a place of refuge to

unveil your inner beauty. Appointments can be booked through Facebook, Instagram, or by calling 1-844-287-9467. Volunteers will work around your schedule—because you are worth the time, the effort, and the celebration.

But this mission cannot continue without help.

The Glass Slipper runs entirely on donations—both financial and physical. They accept gently used and new formalwear for men, women, and youth. Every gown, suit, and accessory was placed there by someone who believed in helping another person feel valued.

Monetary donations go directly toward dry cleaning, garment storage, shopping materials, and the long-term goal of expanding into a larger, more private space. This isn’t just a boutique. It’s a safe space for everyone. A sanctuary for survivors reclaiming their sense of self, and a place where you can truly, come as you are.

In rural areas like ours, access to resources like this is rare. That’s why it matters. That’s why The Glass Slipper exists. And that’s why it needs you . Every contribution helps keep their mission sustainable so they can continue to give back to the community that believes in them.

So, if you have a dress that once made you feel beautiful, or a suit that made you feel strong, consider donating it. If you believe in a mission that turns pain into purpose, consider giving financially. Because when you give to The Glass Slipper, you give someone their Cinderella moment—their joy, their confidence, their chance to finally look in the mirror and love what they see.
