The Gentlemen’s Issue

Happy June and Happy Father’s Day to our Park Cities Lifestyle families!

Perhaps the one person in each of our lives who has had the most influence upon us is, yes, our father. June celebrates the “Man” in our lives, no matter what part he has played, family, community, work, friend. The seasons of life of the “Man” in our lives transpires into various phases of that influence. Also, his influence often transfers into the role of leadership. I’ve chosen to share a wonderful read (referenced below) and note, these steps can be utilized no matter what your position, passion or season of life.

How to Build Influence?

1. Personal Calling - Your calling is the internal driver that defines the external area where your influence will come to life.

2. Trustworthy Character - Without trustworthy character, you’ll kick the legs out from under your influence. But with trustworthy character, you’ll stand under the weight of leadership without it crushing you.

3. Inspiring Vision - Think BIG, Risk much, Dream out of the box, Get Uncomfortable - Let God out of the box and stretch your mind and inspire fresh vision in your heart.

4. Proven Competence - this is only proven when it delivers the intended results.

5. Relational Investment - The real question isn’t about how much influence you have, but rather, what will you do with the influence God has entrusted to you?

How will you use your influence to: 1) meet a need, 2) solve a problem, 3) help a person, 4) create beauty, or 5) make a disciple.

“Insanely Practical Leadership” - 12 No-nonsense keys to master the art of leading yourself and others. Thank you Stephen Blandino for this masterpiece and the many others you have crafted. Yes, you can find this treasure on Amazon.

Joshua 1:9 - “This is my command - be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

SMU Football Coach, Rhett Lashlee

SMU FOOTBALL IS POISED FOR MORE GRIDIRON SUCCESS THIS SEASON, AND MUSTANG FANS CAN’T WAIT

There is an unmistakable electricity in the air at SMU.

Perhaps no one is more excited than 41-year-old SMU head football coach Rhett Lashlee.

Considered one of the brightest offensive minds in college football, he recognizes that the state of the current program is something to cheer about.

“We are back on the national stage again after back-to-back 11-win seasons, playing

for the ACC Championship and reaching the College Football Playoff in our first year back in a Power Conference,” says Lashlee.

Ask any rabid Mustang fan, and you’ll sense the urgency.

“We’ve had tickets in Section 209 since I graduated,” says Alan Rose, SMU class of 2010. “This past season was something special. The energy at each game was unlike anything I’ve experienced at Ford Stadium. I love suiting up in Pony gear and cheering on my Mustangs with family and friends -- there’s nothing like it.”

Success is hard to achieve but sustained success is even harder, says Lashlee.

“The strengths of our program are the winning culture we’ve established and our passionate fan base that filled Ford Stadium all last fall.”

As for a philosophy, Lashlee says it’s simple.

“To create a team-oriented culture where everyone has a role in the overall success, and all individual goals will flow through the (entire) team,” he says.

“We want to be known as a fast and physical team and … play tough, disciplined, and united. We believe in players-over-plays, and we want to put our best players in a position to do what they do best.”

“WE ARE BACK ON THE NATIONAL STAGE AGAIN …” – RHETT LASHLEE, SMU

Lashlee points to several factors behind the success, including a lock-step alignment between the university and athletic department administration, the football staff, and the team, all committed to competing for championships year in and year out.

“The area’s best players want to stay and play big-time college football in Dallas,” says Lashlee. “Now they can do that, play for their city, and take pride in being a Mustang.”

Mustang quarterback Kevin Jennings (South Oak Cliff), tight end RJ Maryland (Southlake-Carroll), receiver Jordan Hudson (Garland), safety Isaiah

Nwokobia (Skyline), Deuce Harmon (Denton-Guyer), and defensive end Cam Robertson (Plano) are all local products. And there are plenty more from around Texas and beyond.

In 2023, the Mustangs went undefeated in the American Athletic Conference and won the conference title. The following year SMU went undefeated in regular-season games in the uber-competitive ACC.

WFAA Director of Sports & Special Projects Sean Hamilton has stayed on top of SMU sports for years, “Covering their rise to the top of the college polls in their first year in the ACC was exciting,” he says. “The Mustangs are certainly going

to add to the already full array of sports journalism in this town.”

Beyond the administration’s commitment, games are won on the field. Lashlee thinks SMU’s greatest “superpower” is winning as a team and says some of the (returning) impact players from last year have a chance to be All-Conference or AllAmericans and play in the NFL.

“We win, we’re fun to watch, we play a fast and explosive brand of offense, and our defense is aggressive and attacks,” says Lashlee, whose Mustangs will face Baylor, Syracuse, Stanford, Miami, and Louisville at home this season.

Lashlee knows SMU has the distinction of being the Division I school in Dallas and one of only three teams in Texas in a top-three conference.

“We are the only team in Dallas … and Texas is a premier state for high school football, which benefits our recruiting dramatically. SMU is one of the few schools in America that can offer both an elite education and degree while playing championship football,” says Lashlee.

Derek Alley, President and CEO of VCC Construction

Derek Alley’s path into construction and real estate almost feels like it was meant to be. Growing up surrounded by the industry, stepping into the family business was a natural next move for him. Today, as President and CEO of VCC, a Dallas-based construction management firm that’s been a staple in the

industry for close to 40 years, Alley is steering the company through a period of growth and innovation, all while honoring the legacy his father built.

“I grew up around construction and real estate, so it was a natural fit to be a part of my career long-term,” Alley shared. “I always loved how tangible it is, that you can see your work product come to life out of the ground. My work experiences in investment banking and private equity helped round out my worldview, but I was continually drawn back to the real estate ecosystem. I absolutely love working with our project teams to create game-changing spaces for our communities around the Country.”

Founded in 1987, VCC has built a reputation as a trusted partner in the construction industry, successfully completing over 300 projects in Texas alone. With projects spanning retail, multifamily, healthcare, and mixed-use developments, the company works across the country. Under Alley’s leadership, VCC has grown into

As the industry continues to evolve, another reason for the company’s continued success is its ability to grow with the industry, embracing new technologies and sustainability trends. “VCC has always prided itself on being able to lead when it comes to innovation, and sustainability at the project level is just common sense to its core,” he says. Alley is especially enthusiastic about innovations in construction materials and artificial intelligence. “Tech-driven efficiencies are a huge part of the future of construction,” he explains. “We’re already seeing progress in areas like design, engineering, scheduling, and resource management.”

diving into the details of every project, Alley creates an environment where each team member can thrive. “My leadership style is very much that of a collaborator,” he says. “Some people go off gut, some go off data, I like to do a mix of both. I demand accurate information and, because of that, I have a lot of trust in our team’s ability to execute.”

When it comes to choosing projects, Alley is selective, ensuring that each venture aligns with VCC’s values. A recent standout is the Kansas City Current mixed-use development, anchored by a new soccer stadium for the women’s team. “It’s going to be a dynamic project that will completely redefine the Riverfront in Kansas City for decades to come,” Alley says, noting the exciting potential of the development.

Rooted in a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and community, Alley’s leadership blends respect for VCC’s legacy with a clear vision for the future. He’s especially passionate about attracting young talent to the industry, emphasizing the entrepreneurial opportunities and personal growth that construction offers. As the industry evolves, Alley’s forward-thinking approach is poised to guide VCC into its next chapter of success.

Broadcaster and Sherman native Will Cain is garnering impressive viewership with his eponymous show on Fox News Network.

AUTHENTICITY IS HIS NORTH STAR

National broadcaster Will Cain says the boldness that has opened doors for him throughout his career comes from two sources: The Texan spirit and “a dad who filled [him] with irrational confidence.” Cain, host of an eponymous television show and podcast, landed the weekday 3pm CST time slot on Fox News Channel in early 2025. His reception has been exceptional. During Q1 2025, Fox News Channel’s newest program “The Will Cain Show” averaged 2.6 million viewers and 312,000 in the demo among 25–54-year-old adults—a 74 percent increase in viewers over the 2024 average for the same time slot. The show surpassed “CBS Mornings” (2,019,000 viewers), NBC’s “Today Third Hour” (1,952,000 viewers), and ABC’s “GMA3” (1,437,000 viewers).

The Sherman, Texas native remembers watching his mother’s favorite news

broadcast, “The Today Show,” and being inspired by hosts such as Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. “I thought ‘I want to be in news and sports,’” Cain recalls. Wanderlust eventually led him to Malibu, California, where he walked on to the water polo team and pursued a degree in telecommunications at Pepperdine University.

He scored a single goal during his collegiate athletic career, but says the experience taught him lifelong lessons. “I learned I [wasn’t] one of the best. In fact, I [was] one of the worst. Then, I asked myself, ‘Okay, well, are you going to quit? Or are you going to grind it out? How are you going to respond to negative feedback or maybe even the prospect of no real big victory at the end of this?’”

Cain also realized the importance of authenticity in media while at Pepperdine. “I

Fox Broadcaster Will Cain

remember being in front of a camera … and feeling like ‘This is teaching me how to be an actor.’ It felt too much like a performance, and I didn’t like that,” he says. So, upon graduating, he pursued a law degree at The University of Texas at Austin, inspired in part by his father, who was a plaintiff’s attorney. He passed the Texas Bar Exam and took a gap year, working for a hunting outfitter in Montana while he wrote and published a novel.

Cain returned to Texas in 2001, bought a hyperlocal newspaper company, and launched a magazine and event company focused on helping families plan for quinceñeras. After a few years, he sold the newspaper, but the event company and magazine had failed. Then living in New York, Cain wanted his next venture to be one he was truly passionate about. His sights returned to his childhood dream— working in television broadcasting. “I was very invested in what I was seeing on T.V. and how

we were having these conversations [about an important time in America]. I decided at that time that that was what I wanted to do.”

While trying to launch a show, Cain developed a relationship with conservative magazine National Review. “My deal with National Review was ‘I’ll do this for free, if you introduce me to everyone you know in television,’” Cain says. The connection ultimately led to his first television appearance on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

While hunting for a full-time gig, Cain guessed the email of the president of CNN and sent him his reel. “I’ve never been afraid of hearing no, but you have to ask someone who has the power to say yes,” he says. The president responded, and Cain became a contributor and conservative voice for the network. He worked for CNN for five years before shifting to sports commentating on ESPN’s “First Take” in 2015. There, he often served

as the voice of contention. “Through my career, I’ve become very comfortable 100 percent being authentic to me and succeeding or failing based on the worthiness of that,” Cain says. He also began hosting his own show on ESPN radio, “The Will Cain Show” in 2018.

In 2020, Cain returned to Fox as a co-host of “Fox & Friends Weekend,” working alongside now U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth

“I LOVE THE SPIRIT OF WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A TEXAN. IT’S HIGHLY RISK TOLERANT; IT’S ENTREPRENEURIAL; IT’S BUILT UPON THE BACKS OF FRONTIERSMEN AND WILDCATTERS.”

and television personality Rachel CamposDuffy. The three created a lasting bond rare in the media industry. “It’s the most special show I’ve ever been involved in in my now 15 years of television,” Cain says. He launched “The Will Cain Show” podcast a year later, around the time when he and his wife decided to return to the Dallas area to raise their two boys as Texans.

“I love the spirit of what it means to be a Texan,” Cain says. “It’s highly risk tolerant; it’s entrepreneurial; it’s built upon the backs of frontiersmen and wildcatters. It’s people who were willing to stake it all for a better claim in this world and a better claim in their family. It is so bold,” Cain says.

Cain commuted to New York for four years to continue hosting “Fox & Friends Weekend.” Then, leadership offered him his own television show, replacing Neil Cavuto. The network even allowed him to record from DFW. Now, Cain has developed a multiplatform digital show. Fox hopes to build him a recording studio in Dallas, where he can host on-set guest interviews and continue innovating around his show format. “I have a vision in mind, and I think within six to 12 months, we are going to see that come to fruition,” Cain says.

Father's Day

10 WAYS TO SALUTE FATHERS OF ALL AGES.

Father’s Day 2025 is Sunday, June 15. So, this year what will you do for dear old Dad on his special day of celebration? Here are 10 ideas that range old school, simple, even a little trendy, but all perfect ways to salute fathers of all ages. First, a little history lesson: Did you know that America’s first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington? However, it was not until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official, that the day honoring dads became a nationwide holiday in the U.S.

Get Dad’s blood flowing with a half marathon, 10K or a 5K run at the annual Stars and Stripes on the sensational Sam Houston Trail Park in nearby Irving.

Afterwards try Father’s Day breakfast at Lubbies Bagels in Lakewood. It’s the closest thing to “back east bagels” anywhere in town, with special touches of sweets, sides, and super delicious schmears. The Lubkin sisters may be originally from Jersey, but their genuine smiles are totally Texas. In the Park Cities proper, head over to Bird Bakery or Sadelle’s, both conveniently located at Highland Park Village.

Tex-Mex fuels Father’s Day in Texas so why not enjoy some fresh air and refried beans with Mi Cocina at Klyde Warren Park across the street from the AT&T Performing Arts Center? Then, take off on a walk around the area – there is nothing like it anywhere in America. Or, while we’re thinking Tex-Mex, Escondido off Preston Road is another gem.

What Dad won’t go for BBQ? We recommend Pecan Lodge and Terry Black’s, both on Main Street in Deep Ellum. Or Lockhart Smokehouse in Bishop Arts. All are excellent choices that will have Dad eating out of the palm of your hand (but only after he finishes his brisket).

Maybe something more upscale is the ticket for Dads with more sophisticated tastes. We recommend Bob’s Steak & Chop House in the Omni Hotel, adjacent to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center downtown. Or Chamberlain’s Steaks & Fish in North Dallas, or Al Biernat’s in the Oak Lawn area (there is a second location near the Galleria.

Maybe it’s time to put a little Pop Stroke in your life. Tap into the Tiger Woods designed course where you can eat, drink, and putt. Located at Grandscape in The Colony, golf-loving papa bears will find it all a big bunch of fun.

Looking for laughs? Kevin James is booked at the Majestic Theatre, need we say more? The actor’s role on the TV hit “King of Queens” helped make him a huge star along with choice roles in movie cutups like “Hitch,” “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry,” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop.”

If Dad prefers something a little less raucous than comedy, step inside one of the area’s best, most intimate listening rooms, Opening Bell Coffee, located in The Cedars. With a sound that draws influences from arena alt rock bands, ambient vibes and piano-driven virtuosity, Californian Adin Boyer blends classical, choir, pop and rock into one beautiful sound. Give him a listen?

Golf Cart Lifestyle

Golf carts aren’t limited to the links, and Family Golf Carts is leading the way in the Park Cities

You’ve probably seen them on streets in Park Cities. Street-legal golf carts are revolutionizing local travel with advanced technology, comfort, safety, and convenience.

With an emphasis on advanced motors, batteries, and affordable pricing, Family Golf Carts offers a quality combination for those looking to invest in a high-quality golf cart.

The Dallas company dedicates itself to on-site maintenance and white-glove service, saying it makes owning and maintaining a golf cart “hassle-free.”

Family Golf Carts is locally owned by the Kuehne family, who have lived in the area for over 50 years. They noticed a growing interest in golf carts and partnered with Texas-owned and operated manufacturers to provide a product that meets the needs of the neighborhood. Family Golf Carts is located on West Lovers Lane for concierge-level service.

It’s eye-opening to consider that, according to transportation statistics, over 90% of car trips within the 214 area code are less than one mile.

Trips to the grocery, visiting friends, and running errands make up much of typical in-town travel. Thus it makes perfect sense to use a smart contemporary solution, offering a more sustainable and convenient option than driving a car.

The carts not only help reduce the wear and tear on traditional vehicles but also save on fuel costs and parking hassles.

Local transportation infrastructure accommodates golf carts, making it easier and more convenient for residents to run errands and enjoy recreation.

The lithium-ion battery is a game-changer that offers better efficiency and longer-lasting power. A keyless startup adds a modern touch and more convenience, plus, integrating Apple CarPlay into the fully digital display is a smart way to connect phones and enjoy music, maps, and hands-free calls.

Coolers and extra storage on select models make carts suitable for leisure and practical uses, blending technology, style, and practicality into one package.

“Our customers would attest to Family Golf Cart’s commitment to their happiness,” says Ryan Kuehne. “No matter how big or small their needs, we work tirelessly to make them happy.”

Competitive pricing combined with the nation’s best golf cart warranty makes it an attractive choice for anyone looking for longterm reliability and savings.

The versatility is hard to beat— whether it’s zipping around the neighborhood on quick errands or enjoying a scenic ride, it offers flexibility that traditional vehicles just can’t match. Lower maintenance and operating costs are also a benefit

Family Golf Carts provides on-site service and maintenance, says Kuehne. “Our competitors will make their customers bring the carts to them to assess what they need or charge them expensive fees to have them towed to their shop, on top of flat diagnostic fees. We come directly to the cart with the proper tools and solve any problem on the spot, usually in less than an hour.”

There’s something about driving a golf cart that adds a relaxed, community-oriented feel to everyday tasks, connecting with neighbors, or just enjoying the outdoors.

“After purchasing a golf cart for our own family, we learned all about the joys of ownership but quickly realized there wasn’t a servicing dealer anywhere near our area,” says Kuehne. “So, we opened a shop down the street to make it easy for customers.”

Another bonus is being able to carry groceries or shopping bags without worrying about finding parking or dealing with traffic. Plus, the eco-friendly nature of Family Golf Carts reduces your carbon footprint.

Whether finding the right model, learning about the latest features, or taking advantage of financing and warranty options, Kuehne says Family Golf Carts makes the experience seamless with “high-quality vehicles, expert advice, and topnotch service.” 4210 West Lovers | FamilyGolfCarts.com
