Showing Up For Others
About 10 years ago my husband and I walked 20 miles over Memorial Day weekend in the name of fallen heroes. It was for an event called Carry The Load, which was started by two veteran Navy SEALs, including Dallas native Stephen Holley, to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day. It was relatively new and I had never heard of it before, but one of our dear friends had recently deployed, and we wanted desperately to be of service—to give back somehow. Carry The Load gave us that chance.
What I’ve learned most from Carry The Load and its founders and supporters is that showing up matters greatly. It doesn’t matter if you walk for 20 minutes or 20 hours, the event is open to all participants who want to honor the sacrifices made by our nation’s heroes. Being present and available and committed makes a difference. And for that organization, being there also raises awareness, raises funds, and inspires younger generations.
When our contributor Dave Muscari pitched me about writing a story on Carry The Load for this issue, it was a no-brainer. Since I’ve joined this publication as editor, Dave is one of the people that has continuously showed up for me, pitching ideas, jumping in on assignments and answering the call whenever I need something. I was not in the least surprised that Dave, himself a prolific writer and Park Cities enthusiast, knew well the origin story of Stephen Holley and Carry The Load. It was a perfect fit, and I’m so proud to feature Dave’s work and this story in our annual Men’s issue of Park Cities Lifestyle

dishes, a specialty coffee and tea program, as well as full cocktail offerings. Opened in 2019, Revelers Hall is a home for raucous music lovers in the heart of historic Bishop Arts. As the name indicates, there’s always a party happening at this New Orleans-style bar where live music is on tap seven days a week.
Jason Roberts is a restaurateur, urban designer, and former US Congressional nominee. But his current focus is the award-winning Oddfellows café and wildly popular Revelers Hall jazz bar, both of which he owns and operates with his partner Amy Cowan and are located in the Bishop Arts district of Oak Cliff.
Roberts grew up in the Richardson/Plano area but has called Oak Cliff home for 25 years. A self-proclaimed “Francophile,” his home has chickens, bees, and a garden befitting the European countryside—making it a retreat from the chaos of his travels and restaurateur life. Outside of work, Roberts’ hobbies include researching and making his own bread, specialty cocktails, and culinary dishes. He has two children and is also a 9-year cancer survivor, having overcome testicular cancer that metastasized to other organs in his abdomen.
And yet, the work continues. Now in its 13th year, Oddfellows is a casual, comfortable restaurant featuring a chef-driven menu that combines classic American fare with a selection of seasonal
“I've always loved old buildings, classic architectural design, and throwing street festivals,” Roberts says. “Fortunately, I’ve been able to merge all of those passions through building our restaurants and helping craft spaces and experiences where people come together to celebrate life while creating memories.”
In 2006, Roberts formed the nonprofit Oak Cliff Transit Authority to revive the Dallas streetcar system, and later spearheaded the city’s effort in garnering a $23 million grant from the federal government to help reintroduce a modern streetcar system to Dallas. In 2010, Roberts, Cowan, and three friends started Go Oak Cliff, dedicated to building community in Oak Cliff while delivering a little economic vibrancy to the many independent businesses that make the historic neighborhood such a great spot to eat, shop, and spend time.
That same year he also organized a series of “Better Block” projects, taking blighted blocks with vacant properties in Dallas and converting them into temporary walkable districts with pop-up businesses, bike lanes, cafe seating, and landscaping. The project has become an open-sourced international movement occurring everywhere from Melbourne, Australia, to Tehran, Iran.
On top of all that, Roberts has received a Champions of Change award from the White House and been showcased in the US Pavilion of the 2012 Venice Biennale.
JASON’S 5 TIPS FOR A PERFECT SUMMER EVENING
1. Queue up the Revelers Hall Band’s first album on vinyl.
2. Pull some fresh mint sprigs from the garden.
3. Mix up a Mint Kir Royale (see below).
4. Find a great book, preferably a thick nerdy biography.
5. Enjoy it all in a super cozy chair on your favorite porch.
JASON’S PERFECT SUMMER COCKTAIL: MINT KIR ROYALE
“I was turned on to crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) from a close friend who lives in Burgundy, who told me about how all of the old-timer petanque players drink a combination of the liqueur mixed with their favorite glass of champagne in order make a relaxing summertime drink to sip on while playing,” Roberts says. “Inspired by that, this is a twist that includes mint sprigs to give it an added summer twist.”
Ingredients
• 1 ounce mint simple syrup
• 1 1/2 ounces crème de cassis
• 4-6 ounces champagne
• Mint sprig, for garnish
Directions
1. Pour the crème de cassis into the bottom of a champagne flute.
2. Top with chilled champagne and garnish with several sprigs of mint.
Photography: Elliott Munoz Photography: Elliott MunozHow did you spend Memorial Day? Was it at a family barbecue, checking out sales at the mall, or spending a leisurely day in a pool?
Ask veteran Navy SEAL and Dallas native Stephen Holley, and he’ll tell you he spent it loaded down with a backpack, walking for hours, and cheering on others to do the same while fundraising in the name of fallen heroes at an event known as Carry The Load.
Holley and Clint Bruce, another veteran Navy SEAL, founded Carry The Load in 2011 with a straightforward mission: restore the true meaning of Memorial Day.
Back then, Carry The Load was a one-day march at White Rock Lake that lasted 20 hours and 11 minutes, included a couple hundred participants, and supported various veteran groups in the area. Now, it's a national movement that reaches throughout the United States.
The annual Dallas Memorial March now happens on Reverchon Park and part of the Katy Trail. Veterans, first responders, and everyday Americans march, pitch in, and lend support along the way. And longtime executive director Debbie Wright says moving to the Katy Trail was critical.
“Instead of circling the lake,” she says of the previous route, “the activity of walking down and back on the Katy Trail, passing people and sharing stories along the way is what it’s all about.”
In 2022, Carry The Load raised $2.25 million in peer-to-peer fundraising while covering 20,000 miles and 96 rallies in 48 states. Since 2011, Carry The Load has raised more than $38 million.
The money raised peer-to-peer during May goes directly to a number of groups who support military veterans, as well as fire, rescue, and police personnel, and their families, in times of need.
But none of this happens without caring volunteers. “Since the beginning, there's been a growing number of local people who have been involved for more than 10 years, many of whom live in the Park Cities,” Holley says, gratefully.
Some of the groups receiving funds in 2023 include Adaptative Training Foundation, Assist the Officer, and Heroes on the Water.
Holley has hundreds of stories that illustrate the lifeblood of the effort. One year, unexpectedly walking through Memphis, a mom showed up
with her son whose dad had died in the military, he recalls.
“We kept walking with them and came upon a construction site,” Holley says. “Clearly puzzled by what he saw, a random construction worker leaned out and asked, ‘What the heck are you guys doing?’ When they shared their emotional story, the big burly construction worker started to weep. That’s the magic of the relay: complete strangers who have no relationship with each other, making an important emotional connection. That’s what we’re all about.”
After all the years, and miles, what continues to motivate Holley? “The impact Carry The Load has made on countless Gold Star families,” he answers. “It also offers those who didn’t serve a way to show their support.”
The movement continues to gain in popularity, and participation, while providing shrewd new innovations and enhancements along the way. Carry The Flag, an educational program designed to inspire patriotism among youth, was added in 2017. Then two years ago, the “Lessons From The Front” podcast began. So far, they’ve produced 70 episodes.
“It’s like being on the relay where we hear meaningful stories valuable to the listener and healing for the guest sharing their story,” says Todd Boeding, the show’s host and a veteran Marine and Carry The Load board member.
Wright says Carry The Load plans to go deeper in markets already established in North Texas and across America. And where does Holley see Carry The Load in 10 or 20 years from now?
“Our fondest hope,” he replies, “is that all of America is honoring Memorial Day.”

The Park Cities is home to some of DFW’s top professionals, including dedicated men who are leaving important footprints in their respective fields. We took a close-up look at these very different guys, all with impeccable reputations, working in unique directions to make things better for those around them.
This familiar resident is Dr. Dan Meyer. The chief of heart transplant and advanced circulatory support at Baylor University Medical Center has been operating on and transplanting hearts and lungs there for three decades.
In 2021, Meyer’s life took a turn when he became the oldest graduate of the U.S. Navy Officer Development School at age 63.
He was among 80 newly commissioned officers, the majority in their 20s and 30s, at a school in Newport, R.I., on the same campus where the historic U.S. Naval War College is located.
He aspired to do “something bigger” beyond his own medical microcosm, “something even more significant than what I was already doing,” he says. Meyer is now one of only eight cardiothoracic surgeons in the entire U.S. Navy Reserve.
Today, Meyer is a proud member of the U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps. He trains annually for two weeks while continuing his work at Baylor. “I am honored to be involved and glad to be able to help,” he says. “It’s an exciting way to be a part of your country, and not only give back but learn about why America works the way it does.”

He’s a former SMU football player and track athlete, deeply involved with organizations such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as Life After Ball, a dynamic nonprofit mentorship program.
Along with his business partner and company CEO David Henry, Gardner’s current passion is Coaches Vue, a new, customized, interactive app designed to assist college athletic departments make better connections with their recruits.
“It’s the first intuitive Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system for recruiting, created here by two SMU grads,” Gardner says.
The innovative platform captures key data points to help coordinators make smarter decisions on engaging recruits (the majority of whom practically live with phones glued to their hands) in ways never available before.
“We increase chances of signing recruits by as much as 30% due to increased and more meaningful engagement,” says Gardner, someone who knows the mind of an athlete all too well. “I’ve been a top 100 high school recruit, a college athlete, and the father of a son in the ‘iPhone generation’ being recruited.”
Gardner also understands the needs of coaches, athletic directors, recruiting coordinators, marketing directors, and others. The platform could flourish in a number of industries, Gardner says, “But recruiting is where we saw an immediate need.”
Schools manage the interaction with recruits as well as the content they share, which is all owned and controlled by the college. Current clients include Texas Tech, Arkansas State, SMU, and Tennessee State. CONTINUED >
SHM Architects is another example of people making a difference in their community.
Founded in 2005, the boutique design studio is based in the Park Cities, and their outstanding work can be found throughout the community.
The firm’s four principals—David Stocker, Mark Hoesterey, Enrique Montenegro, and Nicholas McWhirter— lead a team focused on generating exceptional architecture and interiors in DFW and across the country, including Wyoming, Montana, and Colorado, where they have a satellite office.
Stocker describes their brand as genuine. “We all love Dallas…and want to be good stewards,” he says. “Architecturally, we have wonderful variety, especially in the Park Cities. Highland Park and University Park have codes that maximize the potential for creativity.”
Increasingly, the firm’s aesthetic (and ability to tap that potential) has populated the local landscape.
“We have a world-class arts district, parks, trails, and the largest urban lake in the country,” Hoesterey adds. “We’re comfortable with who we are and build on those unique qualities.”
And it seems to be working. Much of the firm’s successful record is driven by deeply held philosophies. “We feed off each other, challenge each other, and support one another,” Stocker says. “And we wouldn’t have it any other way. We want to give our clients much more than just a house. We want to give them a home…which takes a great process and a trusted team, all working together.”
Cooper Clinic physician Steven Lilly discusses how to promote a longer, healthier life.
Men’s health encompasses more than having an annual physical. In our world of information overload, it may be challenging to know which annual exams you should have and when you should have them, how much you should be exercising, and what your diet should consist of—especially as you age.
There are many similarities between men and women’s health, but there are also noticeable differences in longevity, hormone changes and cancer screenings. In the United States, women tend to have a longer lifespan on average of approximately five years compared to men. “The reasons are likely many and theories include hormonal and genetic factors, interests in personal health and well-being, social connectedness and a host of others,” says Cooper Clinic Platinum physician Steven Lilly.
Increasing your longevity begins with prevention. Testing for prostate cancer, evaluating for early signs of colon cancer and taking steps to reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease are a few of the important factors in evaluating men’s health.
Preventive exams are the first step to leading a healthy life. “We recommend all patients have a comprehensive physical exam each year,” Dr. Lilly says. “It is important for all patients to have a primary care physician to oversee their health.” Starting in your 20s and 30s, a baseline physical exam and lab tests can help detect any abnormalities that may otherwise go unnoticed.
For men in particular, Dr. Lilly says, “Cooper Clinic offers and recommends screening for prostate cancer annually, starting at the age of 40.” Baseline screenings for the various other cancers are recommended at different ages based on individual risk factors and overall health. Colon cancer screening typically starts by age 40 and is recommended every five years following. If, for example, a patient has a family history of colon cancer or a history of high-risk polyps, the screening may be recommended at an earlier age and occur more frequently.
Other annual exams recommended can include a fullbody skin cancer exam from a board-certified dermatologist, dental exams and cleanings, and eye health exams. Frequency of these exams are determined by you and your physician based on your individual health and risk factors.
Men are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease due to factors such as elevated cholesterol, blood pressure, family history and poor physical condition. Another concern, metabolic syndrome—which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke—can be influenced by poor nutrition or being overweight. Additionally, obesity can lead to conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and fatty liver or liver inflammation.
While these conditions are concerning for both men and women, men tend to be at a higher risk. So, how can you lessen your risk for these conditions? Dr. Lilly recommends preventive steps to improve your overall long-term health:
• Lead an active lifestyle. Target at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week, plus strength training at least two days per week.
• Create healthy nutrition habits. Healthy eating doesn’t mean you have to restrict yourself from eating the foods you enjoy. Monitoring your portions, timing your eating and learning your body’s hunger cues are examples of nutrition strategies that can yield noticeable results.
• Optimize supplements. Vitamin D, omega-3 and fiber are all key nutrients for men’s health. Although it is recommended to obtain your vitamins and minerals through your diet first, nutritional supplements can help you reach your daily nutrition goals.
Leading an active lifestyle, being cognizant of your nutrition and taking the right supplements for you can positively impact your health. In addition to the preventive steps mentioned above, Dr. Lilly suggests avoiding any form of tobacco use and moderating alcohol intake.
“Helping men see the potential benefits of gradually improving their health and helping them find sustainable changes that are realistic and achievable is important.”
Gradually developing and maintaining healthy habits as we age is essential to living a longer, better quality life. According to the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study (CCLS) conducted by The Cooper Institute , patients who practice healthy habits live an average of six years longer. “Helping men see the potential benefits of gradually improving their health and helping them find sustainable changes that are
realistic and achievable is important,” Dr. Lilly says. Mental and cognitive health are also vital and can be impacted by factors such as getting quality sleep, managing stress levels and staying socially connected with friends and family.

LEARN MORE: Originally from West Virginia, Dr. Lilly received a Bachelor of Arts in Biomedical Engineering from Harvard University and a Doctor of Medicine from Vanderbilt Medical School before moving to Dallas in 1998 for his internal medicine residency at UT Southwestern. He joined Cooper Clinic in 2021 as a 24/7 Platinum physician for Cooper Clinic Platinum as well as a preventive medicine physician.
