Growing up, Dr. Walker always knew she wanted to be a doctor, but wasn’t sure what kind. After reconstructive facial surgery in college, she found her dream career in plastic surgery. She loves how it combines two of her greatest passions: art and medicine. Having personal experience with plastic surgery and watching her own transformation motivates her to instill that same feeling within her patients.
As a woman-owned and operated business, we feel incredibly lucky to have our shared passion and purpose fall so perfectly into place. Allowing patients to feel more beautiful while restoring their sense of self has been more than rewarding to our team. At PSCD, you have the love and support of our staff beyond when the sutures are tied. Women empower women – always!
I remember staying home sick once when I was about 9 or 10 years old. My mom stayed at home as well and made me chicken noodle soup. It was cool enough outside that she propped the front door open and the crisp air breezed through the house—not something always possible in central Texas. She let me watch Sense & Sensibility for the first time, a movie that I’ve come to realize greatly influenced my own tastes and interests from a young age—in writing, for one. In that memory, I don’t remember feeling sick; I just remember all the things my mom was doing.
With Mother’s Day this month, there are constant reminders of what moms do for us. And not just biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the teachers, friends, mentors, and neighbors showing up in unforgettable ways.
I remember my first high school basketball coach, who retired after my MVP-winning freshman year. I suffered some athletic setbacks following her departure and was struggling with my place on the team by the time I was a senior. She wrote me a letter affirming my value off the court, and I’ve never forgotten that small gesture. It had a profound impact on my outlook because it reminded me that she cared and supported me.
My first boss owned her own business and hired me right out of college. She encouraged me and the other young, entry-level employees at her company to take a seat at the table—to learn, to make a difference. It wasn’t easy. She enforced accountability everywhere: emails, meetings, events. But that made it better. Yes, I had to own up to my mistakes, but I also got to win big.
These are just a few of the women in my life who have made me who I am. And in this issue, we tried to highlight more women, more mother figures, who are stepping up to improve the Park Cities. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call, or write a letter to the women in your life who deserve recognition—and read about a few more of them in the pages that follow.
Remember: It only takes a minute, a small gesture, to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.

Dr. Rachel Walker isn’t your typical surgeon. She’s bubbly, hugs her patients, talks about her dogs, posts trendy and relatable videos on Instagram, talks about medical terms in approachable ways, and—as one of the few fellowship-trained female plastic surgeons in Dallas—knows what it’s like to make her own way in a historically male-dominated field.
She moved from Oklahoma to Dallas in 2019, just one month before she opened the Plastic Surgery Center of Dallas near I-635 following six years of residency and one year of fellowship. Her practice has grown immensely since then. “We now have our full plastic surgery center with an associated laser and aesthetic center,” Walker says. “Over the past couple of years our offerings have expanded tremendously—we do comprehensive lasers, radiofrequency microneedling, filler, toxins, and, of course, surgery.”
Walker’s most common procedures are “mommy makeovers” and breast surgery— along with eyelid surgery accompanied by laser resurfacing by her laser specialist, Paul Kraft. In a few short years, she has managed to grow her business in large part due to referrals, a testament to the quality of her work.
“I think the ultimate compliment is having a practice that is very much
referral-based—patients having a great experience with you and telling their friends,” she says. “At our practice we really focus on the actual customer experience, and we want to get to know our patients. We’re very respectful about people’s varying ideals of beauty.”
Those principles have taken Walker far in an industry in which everyone’s looking for something different in their plastic surgeon. And nationwide, female plastic surgeons are less popular than male.
“I definitely think being in a maledominated industry can be difficult, but it can also set you apart in positive ways,” Walker says. “I’ve been blessed in that my core mentors have been very supportive of females in this space. And in my fellowship, I had a tremendous female mentor—it was nice to see somebody really dominating a space with some of the more female qualities that you don’t often see in male surgeons.”
In the Dallas community, Walker has made it a point to connect with other female entrepreneurs and is a part of a young female entrepreneur group. She also values practical education and supporting women and their experiences: giving young women good role models to see how they can function in an entrepreneurial or medical space.
ARTICLE BY CHRISTIANA NIELSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY MOLLY MURPHY PHOTOGRAPHY“People will reach out to me on social media,” she says. “Often it’s young women wanting to go to med school or maybe starting a career in aesthetics or different kinds of female entrepreneurs, just talking through their unique struggles.”
A piece of advice that Walker gives young women is to know that there will be challenges and setbacks along the path to becoming a surgeon or business owner—but that it’s how you deal with them that counts.
“I think something that’s missing in the entrepreneurial space is people don’t like to talk about their failures much,” she says. “And you’re definitely going to have failures. You’re going to have setbacks. It’s just how you handle them—viewing the problem as an opportunity to learn and grow and not getting demoralized in the process. A failure can be turned into a success if you have the mindset of failing quickly and failing forward.”
Walker also advises embracing the qualities that can make women unique. “My office looks a lot different, and how we treat people is different,” she says. “How I interact with my patients is different because, at the end of the day, I am different than a lot of my peers. To patients I probably don’t seem as academic, and I don’t mean that negatively, but I try to use words that are relatable to patients because I like to meet everyone where they are on their journey, while not compromising on quality or values. My advice to young entrepreneurs is to embrace the things that make you uniquely you and accept that you’re not going to appeal to everyone.”
Three and a half years after forging her path and opening her own practice, Walker now has 12 females and one male who work for her. She has cultivated a positive medical and business environment by creating value and treating her patients and her team with respect and empowering the latter to grow in their roles.
Outside of her practice, she’s passionate about supporting other local Dallas businesses and restaurants including Nonna, Jia Asian Bistro, Sachet, and the Dallas Farmers Market. “I love good food, but it’s also about supporting someone’s craft,” Walker says. Her other passion lies in animals and animal rescue, inspired by her two bulldogs and her cat that she features prominently on her social media.
So the next time Walker is in her office consulting with a patient, she’ll probably give them a hug, tell them about her dogs, and continue to build a community of strong and supportive female plastic surgeons and entrepreneurs in Dallas who inspire the next generation.

CELEBRATE ALL THINGS RETRO WITH BOLD CHOICES AND A BIT OF WHIMSY.
In celebration of its 150th anniversary, Kohler brought back two beloved shades from its archives for a limited-edition product release this year: Peachblow and Spring Green.
PEACHBLOW
An original pastel shade from 1934, Peachblow was a bold complement to common browns and taupes of the time. Today, the vintage color is still a bold choice to complement natural tones. Shown above on the Vox sink.
Inspired by the blue-green waters of a cool northern spring, this historic hue from 1927 has modern relevance in today’s kitchen and bathroom designs, as a complement or bold standout. Shown left on the Farmstead sink and legs.
HOW-TO
To help inspire our vintage style in small spaces, we asked for design tips from Laurie Ramirez, the area manager for the Kohler Signature Store in the Park Cities:
• Add pops of color
• Incorporate soft, clean lines.
• Be playful and intentional with the color.
• Keep the style of the home.
• Install classic fixtures.
• Use simple geometric shapes such as triangles, circles, and hexagons.

By Moore Supply 4640 McKinney Avenue | 469.301.7262 kohler.comTHESE DYNAMIC WOMEN ARE ELEVATING DALLAS AND THE PARK CITIES—ONE CLINIC, JUICE BAR, HAIR SALON, PODCAST, AND FITNESS STUDIO AT A TIME.
Dallas has become a hub for small businesses, and some of our favorites are owned and run by creative, innovative, talented women. We talked to the owners of five women-led businesses that we love to get the scoop on how they brought their companies to life, what they do for fun in the city they call home, and the advice they would give to aspiring female entrepreneurs. From a house-call clinic to a podcast to a juice shop to a hair salon to a fitness studio, these women-owned operations are flourishing—in large part due to the driving forces behind them.
ARTICLE BY CHRISTIANA NIELSONPayne and Dunlap, both family nurse practitioners, first saw a need for a clinic that offers private, in-home visits during the height of COVID. When people in Payne’s Park Cities neighborhood had a difficult time finding convenient COVID testing options, she brought swabs to their homes, administered the tests, and took the tests to a lab to get timely results. “Pretty quickly my phone was ringing off the hook!” she says. “Through this process of helping others with COVID testing, I listened to my patients and figured out that they wanted more than just convenient and easy testing. They wanted convenient pediatric sick visits for their kids, convenient aesthetic services for themselves, or even convenient nutritional or weight loss counseling, too. So, from this, we expanded our service menu and created Clinic Concierge.”
Dunlap, a Dallas native, and Payne, originally from St. Louis, have now been business partners for more than two years and are busy offering in-home services through Clinic Concierge including adult and pediatric sick visits, IV hydration, cosmetic services, and more. Their goal is to make their clients’ lives less complicated and to save them time. Outside of running the clinic, they both enjoy spending time with family and playing tennis, and Payne enjoys training for marathons, coaching her kids’ sports teams, and being involved in Bible studies. Both Payne and Dunlap would tell aspiring businesswomen to follow their intuition and to be confident and courageous, as well as to enjoy the process.

Thousands and thousands of podcasts exist, but there is only one dedicated to women living in the Park Cities: The Bubble Lounge Podcast. Co-hosts Martha Jackson and Nellie Sciutto started the weekly podcast in 2018 as a way to highlight and support small businesses in the town. “We wanted to do all that we can to help the local small businesses thrive by providing an outlet to connect these businesses with potential customers,” Jackson says. Sciutto and Jackson, who met at the University Park Elementary School’s 4th grade mom’s skit, have now grown the podcast to more than 110,000 listeners and have published 190-plus episodes.
Jackson, who also enjoys volunteering with local charities, and Sciutto, an accomplished actress and author in her own right, connect with the Park Cities community through The Bubble Lounge by inviting local business owners and community leaders to be guests on the podcast, where they can talk about their services. “Another great aspect of The Bubble Lounge Podcast is the way it empowers women to be their best selves,” they say of their show that features interviews with successful women in fields like business, entertainment, and politics. For women who want to start a business, Jackson and Sciutto urge them to get out of their comfort zone: “You must make up your mind that you are going to succeed, and you have to show up, day after day. It’s so important to ask for advice from other women business owners who have been through the same process.”

Today, it’s not hard to find a juice and smoothie shop, but only 11 years ago when The GEM opened in Preston Center, it was the first freestanding juice bar in Dallas. Now, it has a second location at Preston and Forest and is still the organic leader in the industry. This is thanks to pioneering owners Mary Kathryn Bass and Leslie Needleman, who first started The GEM after discovering the “power of organic juice, clean food, and a plant-based, anti-inflammatory diet,” after Needleman was diagnosed with breast cancer. Their goal was to use food as medicine and share it with the city of Dallas.
Needleman and Bass, who have lived in Dallas for more than 30 years now and originally met through their kids’ preschool, also love cooking, doing yoga, and traveling together with their husbands, who are their biggest cheerleaders and whose daily routines include The GEM. The GEM may have bright and colorful packaging, but its products, like the Green Glow juice with kale, cucumber, apple, lemon, and ginger, have the substance to support it. “We research every product and ingredient we offer,” Needleman says. “If we won’t eat it, we won’t sell it. We not only offer the highest quality—our products are delicious and approachable.” For other women looking to start a business, their chief advice is to not take “no” for an answer: “If you want something, ask for it!”

Allane O’Neil has been doing hair since she was 15—but her first gig wasn’t exactly in a salon. While going to school in Tyler, Texas, she worked as a dog groomer to earn some money. After moving back to Dallas, though, she turned her sights on the Toni and Guy Academy to learn the art of creating beautiful (human) hair. She then worked in various salons and, once she was ready following the birth of her son, opened Osgood O’Neil Salon in Snider Plaza with the intent to facilitate a salon with incredible customer service and a stellar experience. In the early days, she not only cut and colored hair, but also worked the front desk and did the laundry. Now, she’s celebrating 25 years in an award-winning business and has a second location on Lovers Lane.
The salon’s pedigree is unmatched—her employees are required to complete a one- or two-year apprenticeship program in the craft they choose. “It is important that our staff is nurtured in their personal goals and lifted up in their artistry,” O’Neil says. The amenities are also unmatched, giving clients access to complimentary wine, champagne, coffee, and tea. When female college students come in as clients, she urges them to think about their passion and to be independent thinkers. “Don’t get distracted in doing what it is that you want to do; find what empowers you,” she says. When O’Neil isn’t empowering her clients, she’s spending time with her mother, son, or friends, as well as playing golf and being involved in different nonprofits.

In a city where fitness studios abound, Class Studios stands out from the rest with its class variety, authentic instructors, and its loyal client base. After owner Jasmine Zutter moved to Dallas from New York in 2014, she channeled her love of NYC fitness classes and started teaching cycle at another studio, where she met and later trained Paige Martindell. After instructing together for a few years and holding leadership positions at several studios as well as consulting for studios nationwide, Zutter worked up the confidence to pursue her dream of opening her own studio and asked Martindell to join her in opening it. In 2018, Class Studios West Village was born—and in 2019, the Preston Center location followed. They celebrated their fifth birthday this spring and continue to thrive.
Class Studios offers four formats—cycle, sculpt, train, and tread—which means clients can vary their workouts weekly. “I think fitness consumers are recognizing the value of variety and are more passionate than ever about switching things up throughout the week,” Zutter says. “Class Studios offers so many ways to experiment, led by some of the most talented trainers in the industry. Our instructors are real, authentic, inspirational human beings who approach each class with a desire to truly get to know each client and their stories.” Zutter, a mom to three young boys, encourages aspiring female entrepreneurs to surround themselves with people who will support their dreams, to do their industry research, and to not be afraid to fail and make mistakes: “Some of the biggest breakthroughs have come from some of the roughest seasons.”

If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
