Many patients often want an overall rejuvenation, resulting in a natural looking but significant turning back of the clock.
Often, a deep plane facelift is ideal to refine the neck and jawline and re-establish volume of the mid-face. However, this is done with precision maintaining her natural anatomy and proportions.
Upper lids sometimes see a small amount of excess skin removed, and the protruding ‘bags’ of the lower lids refined.
Volume is the currency of youthbut too much of a good thing can often result in an ‘over done’ look.
This patient had several procedures: deep plane facelift, upper and lower eyelids, fat grafting, and deep croton oil peel.
Fat grafting restores volume lost over time. These maneuvers address the structural issues with aging, but I often tell my patients: you wouldn’t have a high end outfit made out of burlap.
Addressing the skin is critical to have the texture, tone and youthfulness match the restored structure. My go-to for this is a Croton oilphenol peel, and the results speak for themselves. The goal isn’t to have a restoration that looks like a surgeon’s every other patient, but to restore your own unique youthful contours and appearance.

I'm not a good cook. I make a mean salad and never miss a day packing my kids the same exact health-conscious lunch, but I have little natural culinary talents. However, my boys are growing up watching their dad do his stuff in the kitchen, swooning over his homemade meat sauce, pizza and chicken parm.
To us, eating equates to immensely valuing family meals, gathering at the dinner table and debriefing the day. Despite crazy extracurricular activities with the kids, this is something we prioritize; food brings people together and encourages connection.
As it's our Food + Drink issue, I'm thrilled to have Sir Charles grace our cover. As he calls PV home, Charles Barkley is a total joy, and I admire the continued evolution of his career. While he's now best known as a favored analyst, Charles is also the owner of Redmont Vodka. I hope you enjoy his spotlight.
Also in this issue, we interview Sydel Curry, a dear friend. She runs a woman-owned wine biz with her sister-in-law Ayesha... and the duo surely knows how to dominate the entrepreneurial court as much as their hubbies do in the NBA.
Speaking of basketball... our City Scene section is dedicated to Team USA and BTS shots from their time in Paris. So proud of our local guys and gals! There's also a City Scene page dedicated to all things foodie perfectly aligning with our editorial theme. At the moment, my personal drink of choice is a negroni, but if you're all about wetting your whiskey whistle, you'll love our article on bourbon 101. We also have fun features on famed Valley chefs, insight into a somatic diet, and the coolest coffee biz in AZ, owned by a local mom.
A very special piece in this issue is about a dad-son team going viral for their culinary creations. With deep ties to the Valley and Thunderbirds, you'll meet Chance and his son Catcher, reading about their claim to online fame. It's very sweet (and savory).
I'm also excited to launch a monthly series: Behind the Brand and Beyond the Business giving you a unique perspective among Valley business leaders. We'll be spotlighting three of our partners per month.
Finally, a shout-out to our local food scene; we truly have the best of the best when it comes to a diverse dining out experience. Cheers!

MEDSPA OR SURGEON? WHERE DO I GO?
MedSpas offer a variety of beauty and wellness services. From Botox injections to fancy machines, MedSpas can be excellent one-stop shops.
I just don’t like the texture of my skin and it’s not that bad. MedSpas are a great option for those simply looking to improve skin texture and tone. Using facials and skin resurfacing tools patients can get terrific results. But if you have deep scars, big pot marks, or anything that doesn’t require “just a little smoothing”, you’ll be better served by your Plastic Surgeon.
How much skin laxity and fat do I really have?
If you are pulling your face back in the mirror and grabbing handfuls of belly fat, then no combination of office liposuction and/or radiofrequency skin tightening will solve the problem. While some offices will offer “package deals”, you may find that even after multiple treatments and thousands of dollars you are still unhappy, especially if your outcome doesn’t match the “promised results”.
Do I really need a surgeon to do my Botox and Filler?
Let’s be honest. Botox is not that hard and even when placed incorrectly the results are temporary. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for fillers. Improper filler placement can kill skin, cause blindness, and lead to permanent deformities. Check out my Instagram for some examples of filler that I have had to surgically remove from other injectors. To be clear, I am not saying a surgeon must do your filler, but choose your provider carefully.
While MedSpas have a variety of tools and produce great results for many people, Plastic Surgeons have a warehouse of knowledge, procedures, and equipment. In my practice, I often combine MedSpa tools with surgical procedures to ensure the ultimate result and help set realistic expectations for every option.
But how do you know if a MedSpa can help you? Countless patients have come to me for eyelid surgeries, facelifts, neck lifts, and tummy tucks after spending thousands of dollars on the “non-invasive” options. Often these people confess: “I should have just seen a plastic surgeon in the first place.” 9250 N 3rd Street #1003 Phoenix, AZ 85020 | (602) 331-7811 phxsurgery.com V@phoenix.plasticsurgery

In a half-court offense, Charles Barkley could fill it up from the paint or the perimeter. And on the defensive end, he played the passing lane for a steal or blocked a center’s shot. His downright dominating demeanor earned him the nickname Sir Charles, and we caught up with the Round Mound of Rebound who calls the Valley home.
“Living in Arizona is like living among family. Plus, you can wear sandals in December,” says the guy twice dubbed the All-Star Game MVP with the Phoenix Suns.
Barkley is a two-time inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for his individual career and as a member of the 1992 Olympic “dream team.” The basketball superstar is also loved and adored as an analyst on TNT’s popular studio show, Inside the NBA . However, Sir Charles has another baby besides basketball: Redmont Vodka, what he says is the smoothest sipper on the market.
“As the owner of Redmont Vodka, I’m all about a premium small batch spirit. Plus, it’s made by Redmont Distilling Company in Birmingham, Alabama, my hometown.”
According to insiders at Redmont, having Charles own and represent the brand is extremely rewarding.
“Charles, a great friend of mine, epitomizes a savvy businessman who possesses a keen sense of direction, meticulous attention to detail, and a thorough response style. Barkley’s acumen and professionalism make collaborating with him both engaging and enriching,” says Montal Morton, President of Redmont Vodka.
Barkley’s vodka is 8x distilled, non-GMO and gluten free. There’s also Vulcan Gin, made from corn, with no harsh aftertaste. The spirits are available in restaurants, bars, and liquor stores throughout the country.
“I love cruising to my neighborhood Zipps where they offer Redmont. I watch the games, hang with friends, and down a cheeseburger paired with my drink of choice,” says Charles.
And his choice is simple: Redmont and cranberry, heavy on the vodka pour.
“It’s a clean taste and better for your body. It simply tastes good.”
We played some interview one-on-one with the legendary vodka owner, asking Barkley some fun questions about all the things.

FAVORITE MEMORY PLAYING PRO.
I enjoyed the locker room, hanging out, and talking to the guys. I miss the comradery catching up on family, sports and whatever was going on at the time. The locker room banter and friendship meant everything.

OK... BUT WITH YOUR CONNECTION TO THE SUNS, ANY TIPS FOR OUR LOCAL GUYS?
Stay the course.
WHY DO YOU LOVE BEING AN ANALYST?
It’s gratifying, fun and I feel honored people value my honest opinions.

I support women in business and admire female entrepreneurs. I also love anyone who serves for the better of our communities- police, firemen, teachers, and my passion is the military. HOBBIES OUTSIDE BASKETBALL?
Golfing, a good cigar, and my happy hour regimen over cran-and-Redmont.

FROM SWINGING CLUBS TO SMOKING CUTS, MEET THE FAMED FATHER-SON DUO GOING VIRAL
PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANA
During covid, Catcher Cozby told his dad it was time to pursue a TikTok career. The Valley teen insisted his father share his culinary talents with the social media sphere, so he started rolling the camera.
“It started with a simple suggestion from my son, ‘We should start filming your cooking, dad.” This led to the creation of 3PiecesofPecan, and it continues to be a wild ride,” says Chance Cozby, Content Creator.
You’ve likely heard of Chance; he left working at Ping in 2019 to serve as WM Phoenix Open Tournament Chairman. After that, he took over as Executive Director for The Thunderbirds. While he leads a dedicated Thunderbirds career, 3PiecesofPecan is a hobby that has morphed into something he never expected.
“Growing up, my family was all about food and golf; in fact, my dad is in the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame and the PGA of America Hall of Fame. At home, however, my mom taught me the ins and outs of cooking and my dad taught me grilling and smoking,” says Chance.
Chance has fond memories watching his dad prep ribs and brisket in a custom made off set smoker. This special smoker regulated the temperature with a steady fire of 3 pieces of Oklahoma pecan wood, hence the name of Chance’s culinary platform.
“My dad passed away in 2020 and I inherited his smoker, the logo for 3PiecesofPecan. I started using the smoker a lot, and after seeing what came out of the kitchen, my son turned me into a content creator for public consumption.”
More like a social media sensation.
Chance cooks while Catcher films creating content that’s gone viral. The father-son dynamic duo has hundreds of thousands of followers, and has posted 500+ recipes receiving over 450 million views on the social media platforms combined.
“I’m not a chef and have zero training. I wish I could cook like the pros, but there’s something very normal about being a husband, father, and person that works for a living… however, you have to come home and somebody has to make dinner.”
And Chance has quite the audience to taste-test his creations.

In one of his posts, the camera follows Chance as he curates breakfast burritos packed with bacon, potatoes, eggs, green chiles and cheese. For this particular video, he’s cooking for his son’s baseball team, and receiving glowing reviews. Food for thought: the video just so happened to reach 14+ million views.
“It’s all very special. Named after my dad using the smoker we used growing up… and now my son films the recipes. I never thought people would actually follow us.”
Chance credits Catcher, a Brophy student, for pouring so much love into their passion project, savoring every single smoker moment with his son.
“Catcher will be off to college in a year. Trying to slow time down. Like golf: it’s all about the hang.”

Have you ever considered how Halloween is the one day a year that dressing up as someone else isn’t socially or legally frowned upon? Or is it? With that loaded question in mind, let’s dive into the frightening facts of committing a crime... in costume!
If you decided to emphasize the tricks instead of the treats this Halloween, you may find yourself facing elevated charges. In 2018, Arizona passed House Bill 2007, which gets you in trouble for committing a crime while masking your appearance. Considering TP'ing the annoying neighbor’s house in costume? If you go through with it, you ' re looking at multiple charges.
What if you get a tad too into character this Halloween? We’ve covered how to handle yourself in a potential situation before, but what if you decide to double down when the officer asks you to identify yourself and you admit: you ARE the Batman. Well, in Arizona, criminal impersonation is a no-no, and carries penalties. Would an officer actually cite you for claiming to be Batman? Probably not, but you have to ask yourself: what would the Dark Knight do? He probably wouldn’t risk it, so neither should you
Remember, the only thing that should be devilish is your costume, not your propensity for crime. Getting busted in costume does seem funny, but Arizona values justice more than it values your right to get in trouble dressed as Donald Duck. If you find yourself a-fright on Halloween night, call Palestini Law and we’ll make everything alright!
JAMES P PALESTINI | Palestini Law, PLC provides high level criminal defense services to clients spanning celebrities, athletes and esteemed individuals Being charged with a crime is one of the most difficult situations you or your loved ones will ever face For aggressive and experienced representation, seek legal assistance from Palestini Law With over 10 years of criminal defense experience, James has conducted over 350 trials He’s been awarded by the legal community for his expertise with the Rising Star Award for the last 4 consecutive years, and the AVVO Client Choice Award for the last 5 consecutive years.

FROM BARREL TO GLASS: THE ART AND CRAFT OF THE CLASSIC BOURBON SPIRIT
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SQUARE ONE CONCEPTS
Go big or go home. That’s the philosophy of S. Barrett Rinzler when he brought bourbon to the Valley.
Barrett is the Founder, President & CEO, of Square One Concepts, the restaurant group that operates Bourbon & Bones Chophouse | Bar and B&B Cocktail Lounge. He says there’s just something special about the whiskey.
“Never cry over spilt milk. It could’ve been whiskey.”
“Drinks are cynical in nature. Vodka and gin have been the kings for so long, and now bourbon is making its mark. The fresh popularity begets new distilleries and therefore more offerings to add to its popularity,” says the Valley restaurateur.
Selecting bourbon is an art, and the Square One Concepts team takes curating their collection very serious. They flaunt the largest collection in the Southwest – with more than 860 labels and many varieties under each label – the Bourbon & Bones umbrella easily has a collection that surpasses 1100+. They are on the radar of every bourbon maker in the country and are routinely offered “barrel picks” which are when they get to go and hand select their specific barrel from the distillery. It is then bottled and labeled exclusively for them.
“We have cultivated some great relationships over the past 30 years with our vendors and work with them to get the best,” says Barrett.
In fact, Barrett and his beverage team are always hunting for the best bourbon on the market and bringing a vast collection to the Valley.
The collection curation process involves the team making regular visits to Kentucky and Tennessee, tasting with the master distiller, exploring the property, learning the history of the property, and touring Rickhouses, where barrels are stored. They sample straight from the barrel – nosing the bourbon and figuring out what they like.
A distinct departure from this process is with Maker’s Mark where the ‘house of Bourbon & Bones’ creates its own custom flavor profile. The team selects wood staves for the barrel and also distinctive flavors, and the result is a singular creation available exclusively at Bourbon & Bones Chophouse | Bar and B&B Cocktail Lounge.
Nothing compares to the Bourbon & Bones collection and the team is well versed when it comes to bourbon 101. Staff is highly trained to educate diners and drinkers ensuring a delectable and insightful experience.
We scored a bourbon briefing from the esteemed staff breaking down the whiskey’s bones.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD BOURBON?
• Depth
• Doesn’t fall flat
• Lingering flavor in your mouth
• Rounded out
• Not watered out
• Flavor comes from the barrel; the longer there, the more barrel flavor it picks up. Some hold better with some age.
FIVE AREAS TO CONSIDER THAT IMPACT FLAVOR PROFILE OF BOURBONS:
• Barrel (the wood)
• Where in the Rickhouse it’s stored
• Temperature
• Elevation of where it’s stored
• Humidity
WHAT BOURBON “FLAVORS” ARE BEST?
You want that toffee, caramel-vanilla flavor, and some people prefer a spearmint edge.
WHAT LIMITED EDITIONS CAN GUESTS ENJOY AT THE BOURBON & BONES UMBRELLAS?
• Michter’s Celebration – only three bottles ever came to Arizona and Bourbon & Bones has two of them!
• Eagle Rare 25 – two bottles came to AZ; one to Bourbon & Bones!
• The new Jack Daniels barrel proof rye from Coy Hill in TN, their famous Rickhouse. They’ve never given anyone a private barrel!
• Weller Millennium is a super rare release.
• Square One Concepts pretty much gets every rare release available.
• [Barrett picked the Blanton’s Gold and Angel’s Envy bourbons.]
WHAT MEALS ARE BEST PAIRED WITH BOURBON?
Bourbon is definitely a red meat spirit and goes with B&B steaks. That’s why they do the flambé with Elijah Craig 127 proof, single barrel.

OUR ONE-ON-ONE WITH SYDEL ON HER SLAM DUNK WINE BIZ, DOMAINE CURRY
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY DOMAINE CURRY
Her hubby might be crushing the court as a Phoenix Sun, but this Valley mama is making a slam-dunk of her own.
Meet Sydel Curry-Lee, the co-founder of Domaine Curry wine. She runs the vino biz alongside her sisterin-law, Ayesha Curry.
“For as long as I can remember, Ayesha and I have wanted to partner on a project. The inspiration for Domaine Curry came to us when Ayesha was giving a toast to the sophisticated, bold and unique women in our family at a family dinner. The characteristics she described during the toast resembled the glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon in our hands and it hit us – our collaboration had to be wine,” says Sydel.
The dynamic duo are now dominating the wine business, growing their Domaine Curry community and fanbase.
“Ayesha and I love that wine is something that brings people together during moments of joy and connection around a table. We hold a shared mission as Black women to introduce a broader scope of women to the wine industry
through Domaine Curry. We want to create a space that’s approachable for multicultural women interested in consuming fine wines and working in the industry.”
We connected with Sydel and got the scoop on all things Domaine Curry… and beyond.
Being from Charlotte and having lived in the Bay Area, I feel Arizona is right in the middle of both lifestyles. It has that slow, friendly pace of North Carolina, but you still have a sense of California’s hustle and bustle. Plus, I love the warm weather (yes, even in summer), and being outside with our kids.
Let’s go Suns! After my husband won his first NBA championship, we entered a free agency summer. Thrilled to be offered a spot on the Phoenix Suns, we moved to the Valley in 2022.
YOUR INSPIRATION EXUDES WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND LEGACY. HOW DOES DOMAINE CURRY REPRESENT THIS?
We are extremely close with the women in our family – our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters and now daughters. At the heart of the brand is a tribute to these strong women who have shaped us.
The women in our lives have always taught us the value of hard work, the importance of family, and maintaining a strong connection to our faith. When founding Domaine Curry, we were inspired by the Bible verse Proverbs 31 which tells the story of a virtuous, hard-working woman that builds a legacy for herself and her family. This remains one of the guiding mantras of the brand, built into the brand ethos as “Femme 31” and represented on the Domaine Curry packaging as a steadfast, eternally burning lamp:
She considers a field and buys it; Out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; Her arms are strong for her tasks.
She sees that her trading is profitable, And her lamp does not go out at night.
WHAT WENT INTO LAUNCHING THE NAPA-BASED WINERY?
With neither of us coming from a wine background, we’re naturally curious and open to learning. Ayesha and I came together, grounded ourselves with likeminded people, and partnered with Bukky Ekundayo from The Prisoner Wine Company who saw our potential and built a sisterhood bond to change the narrative. Domaine Curry and The Prisoner Wine Company are both driven by shared values and a mission to be an inclusive and wel coming space in the wine industry, so the partnership felt harmonious from the start.
“At the heart of the brand is a tribute to these strong women who have shaped us.”
TELL US ABOUT YOUR WINES...
We currently have three varietals with the 2022 vintages of our Founders Blend and Cabernet Sauvignon releasing soon.
2021 Domaine Curry Founders Red Blend Napa Valley
With the Founders Blend, Ayesha and I strived to push the boundaries of what is expected of a blend and forge their own path, incorporating wines for a smooth, full-bodied blend.
2021 Domaine Curry Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
This bold and balanced 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon comprises Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc to create a soft, fruit-forward offering.
2023 Domaine Curry
Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley
A mouthwatering blend from two vineyards, Wappo Hill in Stag’s Leap District and River Oaks in Alexander Valley, 2023 Domaine Curry Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley bring unique minerality, crisp acidity, and ripe tropical fruit to one glass.
WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL WINE OF CHOICE?
Tough question! When it’s hot, I love drinking our recently released 2023 Domaine Curry Sauvignon Blanc (pair it with grilled seafood). On chilled autumn nights, I’m all for a glass of the Founders Blend. Our entire family enjoys drinking our red wine at holiday dinners.
ANY INSIGHT INTO YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH AYESHA AND RUNNING THE BUSINESS AS SISTERS?
Ayesha and I bring different perspectives to the business, but our shared mission and values are key when working together.
Ayesha brings her culinary knowledge which honors the tradition of the wine, while I understand consumer-friendly flavor profiles that speak to our audience. Together, we find the perfect balance which reflects our bond as sisters-in-law. Although we have different viewpoints and palates, we are connected by a shared foundation that keeps us aligned in the winemaking process.

For many, brewing a cup of Joe is a much needed daily jolt of joy. But instead of opting for a cliché coffee shop blend, go for something locally curated with immense love: Pop’s Premium Coffee, owned and operated by a Paradise Valley mompreneur.
“The most wonderful thing about coffee is its ability to create connections - to bring people together,” says Kimberly Guimarin, founder, Pop’s Premium Coffee.
Kimberly Guimarin believes coffee is a lifestyle. Born and raised in Southern Illinois, the Pop’s Coffee founder and self-proclaimed “Daddy’s Girl” exercised her father’s inspiration to bring her brew to life.
“My dad is the namesake behind the brand; Pop or ‘Popuccino,’ as my kids call him, always taught me to live a life without limitations,” she says.
Launched in 2017, the local coffee biz sells the highest quality coffee and espresso products online, also available in retail stores, restaurants and health clubs.
“All of Pop’s Coffee beans are small batch roasted to maintain freshness; even our flavored coffees are all natural, and we never use chemicals or oils. Plus, we’re responsibly sourced from fair trade and sustainable farms around the world.”
And there’s a story behind the blends. For example, the Espresso Italiano is inspired from a cafe in Rome where Kimberly’s father scored an espresso 101 lesson from an Italian coffee connoisseur.
“Communicating over espresso comes naturally to me and my family.”
Recently debuted is the Pop’s Coffee Cart, an adorable setup making your next meeting, event or party delicious and memorable. The presentable brew-on-wheels offers curated options spanning coffee, lemonade and gourmet hot chocolate.
“To me, being a mom comes first, but with older kids, I craved more adult interaction and mental stimulation. I want my kids to see that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to without compromising yourself.”
And Kimberly continues to set an example; not just with her entrepreneurial spirit, but her philanthropic passion.
“‘Show More Kindness Charity’ is our family foundation. We wanted kindness to be our guiding force, so it was important to include it in the name.”
Every May, Kimberly and her family host a “Derby and Diamonds” fundraiser benefiting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Their most recent May 2024 event raised over $150,000. smkcharity.com
Bean Freshness: Coffee beans start to lose their flavor shortly after roasting. Ideally, beans should be used within two to three weeks of roasting. Store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve freshness.
Grind Size: The grind size should match your brewing method. For instance, espresso requires a fine grind, while a French press needs a coarse grind. The right grind ensures proper extraction and optimal flavor.
Water Quality: Coffee is 98% water, so the quality of your water impacts the final taste. Use filtered water to avoid off-flavors caused by impurities.
Brewing Ratios: The coffee-to-water ratio influences strength and taste. A general starting point is 1 to 2 tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water.
Brewing Time: The time your coffee grounds are in contact with water affects extraction. For example, espresso takes about 25-30 seconds, while a French press requires 4 minutes. Adjusting the brew time can fine-tune the flavor.
Bean Origin: Coffee’s flavor is influenced by where it’s grown. Beans from different regions offer unique profiles thanks to variations in soil, climate, and altitude.
Roast Level: Roast level affects flavor and aroma. Lighter roasts preserve more of the beans’ original flavors, while darker roasts tend to have richer, more robust flavors.

In the pursuit of optimal health, the balance of physical, mental, and emotional elements defines our overall quality of life. However, hidden beneath this equilibrium lies the often-overlooked influence of inflammation, a key player that can either bolster our vitality or undermine it.
“Inflammation is the body’s natural defense mechanism in response to injury, infection, or harmful stimuli. This process often results in redness, swelling, and pain- all signs the body is working hard to repair itself,” says Nicolle (Nikki) Goyle, Chief Operations & Wellness Officer at Scottsdale’s Integrated Spine, Pain, and Wellness.
Nikki Goyle works alongside her husband, Dr. Asha Goyle, a Pain and Regenerative Medicine Physician. Their goal- helping people achieve optimal health holistically, as inflammation can contribute to chronic pain, arthritis, heart disease, digestive problems, and other long-term conditions.
“While anyone can get inflammation, more than 50% of U.S. adults are prone to chronic inflammation caused by factors like stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, or exposure to environmental toxins,” says Nikki.
We connected with Nikki on simple ways to incorporate a somatic diet that helps provoke an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. This includes eating right, regular physical activity, stress management, and adequate sleep.
Easier said than done, right?
“Creating new habits takes time- about 60 days to fully adopt a new lifestyle.”
The team at Integrated Spine Pain and Wellness offers a weight loss and wellness program that’s more than a quick fix; they don’t give you medication and send you on your way. Instead, they believe in the power of food as medicine.

between the mind and body. We recognize that emotional pain, stress, and past trauma can be deeply intertwined with a person’s relationship with food and your body.”
A key takeaway of a somatic diet is recognizing that cravings and eating patterns are often driven by emotions. For example, anxiety, can trigger the desire to eat, particularly comfort foods. This is because food often serves as a coping mechanism- a way to soothe or distract ourselves from uncomfortable feelings.
“For instance, you might notice that you reach for sugary snacks when you’re feeling stressed. Instead of automatically surrendering to these urges, a somatic diet encourages you to pause, check in with your body, and ask yourself what you really need in that moment.”
So how can we retrain our brain to eat healthier?
According to Nikki, this begins with a conscious and committed choice.
“Living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy occasional indulgences- it’s all about balance.”
Nikki’s eat right tips for families includes:
When grocery shopping, focus on the perimeter of the grocery store for fresh produce, meats, and dairy. The Yuka app helps rates products from excellent-to-bad.
Devise a weekly menu and use grocery delivery to purchase the items needed. Such services

As professional organizers, we’re all about budget-friendly fixes. With valuable space taken up by RO systems, utilize the inside of the door to maximize space for kitchen cleaning supplies. Opt for clear containers with adhesive mounting.
Items go hiding and food expires when shoved in the back of a shelf. Deep pantry bins in multiple widths are a good solution. Stack them to maximize vertical space.
We see many kitchens trading upper cabinets for large, deep drawers. These can quickly become a mess with so much space, but there’s a solution for optimization. Tall spring-loaded dividers help keep things neat.
Ideal for the corners of pantries (the most underutilized area in the space), use clear turntables. Perfect for bottles and snacks, these portable Lazy Susans can come with permanent and removable dividers.
Safely and appropriately placed, attach magnetic strips to the inside of cabinet doors or walls to hold metal utensils, such as knives or cooking tools, freeing up drawer space.

We have seen recent outbreaks of listeria in many states. Listeria is a bacteria that can be found in certain foods such as lunch meats and unpasteurized cheeses.
The bacteria can be killed by heating meats and the process of pasteurization. Symptoms associated with having ingested listeria, which can be delayed many days, include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
The bacteria can cross the placenta and be very dangerous to a pregnancy. Remember:
• Lunch meat or hot dogs should be internally heated to at least 165°F.
• Avoid unpasteurized cheese such as feta, queso fresco, and brie.
• Ensure all raw fruits and vegetables are appropriately washed.

Originally from Miami, Florida, Chef Raul A. Del Pozo began his culinary career at 16 years old. With more than 15-years working for fine dining establishments, Chef Raul brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Steak 44, Dominick’s Steakhouse and Ocean 44.
“Having the ability to work alongside Jeff, Mike, and Dennis Mastro is incredible. To create new, innovative ideas is a dream come true,” says Chef Raul.
Chef Raul is the newest player in Prime Steak Concepts working alongside Chief Executive Chef Marc Lupino, who has been overseeing the company’s family of steakhouses for the past two decades.
“I describe our roles as a true partnership. Chef Lupino’s responsibility is handling the day-to-day operations, and my responsibility focuses on the future and continued culinary growth of our concepts.”
Chef Raul is always formulating new culinary creations. In fact, he is all about making a memorable and magical dining experience for guests.
“I recommend the Hamachi Crudo & Torched Scallops to start and our secret Butchers cut. Pair it with the delectable brand-new shells & cheese or our Boursin Whipped Potatoes. These items combined are my all-time favorite meal.”
From Caviar Cones to Kobe Beef, Here’s how Prime Steak Concepts is Revamping for Fall And the Mastro team is thrilled to have Chef Raul evolve their offerings.
According to Jeff Mastro, Prime Steak Concepts co-owner, “Raul is a wonderful complement to our culinary team, but beyond that, his position is designed so he can focus solely on helping my brother Mike and I improve what we do as we grow. We strive to make each of our restaurants and menu items be the best it can be.”
Heading into fall and winter, menus spanning Steak 44, Dominick’s Steakhouse and Ocean 44 are getting revamped and we scored a first look at the new items as described by Chef Raul himself.
• Caviar Cones Mini sesame cones filled with a horseradish crème fraiche, & Siberian osetra. This dish is garnished with chive oil & 24ct. gold! It’s an excellent option for those looking for the perfect introduction to fine Caviar, as well as the Caviar Enthusiast.
• Whole Roasted Branzino Filet Seasoned with our house-made fish rub and paired with a Chardonay lemon butter, it’s the cleanest fish you’ll ever have (and reminiscent of eating Dover sole in France)!
• Kobe Wine Fed Striploin seared to perfection and paired with a yuzu ponzu sauce & spicy mustard, this is the king of kings when it comes to Kobe Beef. The cattle eat residuals of the wine fermentation in the region thus enhancing the richness in flavor and tenderness. The epitome of “melt in your mouth” texture.
“There are so many wonderful restaurants here in our hometown, and the fact that our concepts continue to thrive, as well as being warmly welcomed by longtime residents, new members of the community, and visitors, is both gratifying and humbling at the same time. It is better than we could’ve imagined,” says Jeff Mastro.

The Valley’s beloved Chef Joey, owner of The Maggiore Group, is boasting his brunch secrets in his new book, Brunch King: Eats, Beats and Boozy Drinks. The delectable read shares 70 of Chef Joey’s favorite flavor-forward recipes including a Ten-Layer Breakfast Lasagna recipe, Crème Brulée French Toast Sticks, and nostalgic cereal-infused cocktails. There’s also an interactive Spotify playlist by the legendary DJ Ice to get those culinary juices flowing.
We caught up with the Valley fave introducing you to the guy behind the book and behind his restaurants. Here are 7 things you might not know about Joey Maggiore, from Joey Maggiore.
1. I love to fishing and traveling, especially to Sicily & Napa Valley.
2. My absolute favorite drink is a nice, balanced Negroni with Plymouth Gin.
3. The love for cooking came from me watching my dad, Chef Tomaso, create something amazing and beautiful, but the best part was watching him bring it out of the kitchen to the guests and watching their eyes light up. It was at that moment I was hooked, and I knew I was hooked on that feeling for life.
4. I create my concepts lying in bed middle of the night. That downtime is where a lot of my creativity comes flooding in, and as we’ve seen, it can get pretty crazy!
5. I find much joy in cheering on and supporting other chefs in my restaurants and within the community. I love seeing everyone’s success and passion shine through in their cooking.
6. My dislikes… I don’t have many, but I don’t like seeing people sad, hence the desire to bring them joy through food!
7. The main thing I want people to know about me is that I strive to live life to the fullest and see every obstacle as an opportunity to do and be better. My wife and kids are my life and every day with them is extremely valuable and important to me.

My Mediterranean restaurant Cala draws influence from other countries, introducing spices from around the world. We bust the common misconception that the word “spice” means spicy; however, I often use spices earthy in flavor without the element of heat.

Reproductive hormones regulate virtually every bodily function. While the natural hormone cycle of men and women changes throughout our lifecycle, the decline during middle age can bring unwanted side effects such as hot flashes, depression, mood swings, insomnia, and a host of other challenges.
Bioidentical Hormones Replacement Therapy (BHRT). BHRT is a popular option for returning hormone levels to a healthier level, enhancing function, and reducing or eliminating symptoms. We value providing personalized care for men and women to determine the best avenue in addressing their symptoms. Our treatment plans are specifically tailored to a client’s lifestyle, symptoms, and preferences.
Hormone pellets (BHRT) are used for balancing hormones in both men and women. These small, rice grain-sized pellets are made from hormones that chemically mirror those naturally produced by the human body. They are inserted under the skin, typically in the hip or abdominal area, in a simple, in-office procedure. Once implanted, the pellets steadily release small, physiologic doses of hormones, providing a more consistent hormone level compared to traditional methods like pills, patches, or injections. This is effective for managing hormonal imbalance symptoms like mood swings, fatigue, weight gain, and sexual health concerns.
A Monthly Spotlight Series Featuring Three Industry Leaders Making Waves in the Valley
Each month, we’re spotlighting three of our dynamic partners giving you a unique glimpse into their personal passions and perspectives. Each gets 100 words to answer a hand-selected question, giving you a deeper connection to the people driving the Valley and serving our sacred community.
WHAT PERSONAL MILESTONE ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
Definitely being a first-generation college student. My family is from Eastern Kentucky, then moved to Ohio (my story long before it was a book). College was never in the cards, but I became fascinated with Georgetown University from a movie. I vividly remember sitting in an old Ford holding that envelope, assuming it was a rejection. But it wasn’t. The trajectory of my life changed with that piece of paper, and I hold that moment in my core: never let anyone else’s expectations define your possibility.
WHAT PERSONAL EXPERIENCE HAS SHAPED YOUR APPROACH TO BUSINESS?
I am a child of split parents, so I can personally relate to what many of my client’s children experience. As a family law attorney, I always aim to foster a positive experience and recognize much of it hangs on the dissolution process- a responsibility I take very seriously. I immensely value keeping the family intact as much as possible so they can continue to honor their traditions, even though the parties choose to part ways.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PERSONAL IDENTITY WITH YOUR PROFESSIONAL ROLE?
My first years in the industry, I separated personal and professional as I didn’t like the perception of my industry. I felt I could just work hard, and people would refer me. Through coaching and mentorship however, I learned that if I truly believed I was great at my job, then I owed it to my network to ensure they knew that. I concluded that my personal and professional identity had to be aligned. Once that happened, my career took off.
FRUIT SNACKS & DRIED FRUITS:
Sticky and full of sugar, this snack sticks to teeth and encourages decay.
FLAVORED YOGURTS: Many flavored yogurts contain added sugars that can contribute to tooth decay if not brushed away properly.
SPORTS DRINKS: With high levels of acids, such drinks can erode tooth enamel.
BREAD, CRACKERS & POTATO CHIPS: Certain types of bread, crackers and chips, especially those made with refined flours, can get stuck in teeth and convert to sugar as they break down.
ICE: Chewing on ice can cause tooth damage or wear enamel over time.

INTERVIEWS WITH DEANDRE JORDAN, LEWIS HOWES AND MIKE POSNER
As a Paradise Valley-based Concierge Sports & Performance Psychiatrist, it was up my alley to attend VeeCon 2024 and gain valuable insights from overly impressive and inspirational individuals.
Held in Los Angeles over three actionpacked days, VeeCon flaunts a conference-meets-festival scene bringing together thought leaders in business, marketing, technology, innovation, sports, pop-culture, and entertainment. The goal: to inspire connection, creativity and growth.
I had the privilege of interviewing several leading voices, including NBA champion DeAndre Jordan, LA Galaxy SVP of Business Operations Thomas Braun, singer Mike Posner, mind architect Peter Crone, author Lewis Howes, and mindfulness expert Case Kenny.
Despite each person’s unique journey, I was struck by specific common denominators. All my interviewees were adamant that one’s mental mindset is a key player to their success. Another parallel practice among my interviews was the importance of incorporating multiple mindfulness and wellness practices into their day, such as cold plunge, sauna, meditation, yoga, etc.
Here are a few excerpts from some of my discussions.

“For me, it is simply being able to look at myself in the mirror, take a second, and take a break.” -DeAndre Jordan, NBA Champion
GRAMMY-NOMINATED ARTIST (WHO ALSO SUMMITED MT. EVEREST)
TALKING ABOUT MENTAL PREPARATION AND VISUALIZATION, DO YOU APPLY THAT TO YOUR PERFORMANCES AND CONCERTS TOO AHEAD OF TIME?
Posner: Before I go to rehearsal with the band and sing, I rehearse in my mind. It’s important to do that because you can go really slowly and go the speed you need to go to make no mistakes. Then, by the time you are in the rehearsal studio or on stage, you’ve done it so many times that it doesn’t feel like the first time.
WAS THERE EVER A TIME WHERE YOU EXPERIENCED A MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLE, WHETHER IT BE ANXIETY OR LOW MOOD, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THAT?
Jordan: Yeah, I definitely have experienced some low times and low moods, but they don’t last forever. If you think the world is crashing down on you, then it’s a lot to handle, and you can’t be a great person, can’t be a great teammate, and can’t be a great partner if you’re not right within yourself. I think for me it is simply being able to look at myself in the mirror, take a second, and take a break. It is these things that are extremely important when it comes to our mental health, physical health and optimal performance.
“Too often we’re too in our head that we don’t take a deep breath and allow our nervous system to be calm in stressful situations.” -Lewis Howes
NEW YORK TIMES
BEST-SELLING AUTHOR AND HOST OF “THE SCHOOL OF GREATNESS,” ONE OF THE TOP GROWTH MINDSET PODCASTS IN THE WORLD
WHAT ROLE DOES MENTAL SKILLS TRAINING PLAY FOR ATHLETES OR WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK IT SHOULD PLAY IN TERMS OF PREPARATION AND TRAINING?
Howes: I think it’s everything. I’ve worked with a lot of top pro athletes. I’ve been blessed to interview top pro athletes. In fact, I just was in Paris and saw Novak Djokovic win the Gold. I rewatched our interview had asked him how he prepares so that when he’s down or in a stressful moment, he doesn’t let his mindset snap. His response was simple: to breathe. I think mental training is connecting to your body. Too often we’re too in our head that we don’t take a deep breath and allow our nervous system to be calm in stressful situations.

Chances are, you’re contemplating a home remodel whether it be a kitchen revamp or a brand-new build. We tend to delay diving in, but when we’re ready to take the renovation plunge, what are the first steps?
We scored insight from Bryan Grabowy, owner of Socon Builders, who dives into market expectations and how to successfully take your project from conception to completion.
WHEN SHOULD YOU FIRST ENGAGE A BUILDER?
The sooner the better! The most successful projects are ones where builders work hand-in-hand with the owner and design team to manage costs and expectations every step of the way.
HOW ARE COSTS BROKEN?
We often start with a napkin sketch of what a client has in mind. From this, we utilize onscreen estimating software and recent project cost data to develop a detailed budget. This budget can get tweaked along with project parameters; it’s also a roadmap for the design team.
HOW HAS THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY CHANGED OVER THE PAST 5 YEARS?
The past 5 years have been wild! Precovid construction costs for both materials and labor steadily increased 3-5% per year for the last 20 years. In 2020, pricing and material lead times jumped as much as 50%, creating havoc within the industry. Thankfully, in the last 2 years, things have
leveled off and gone back to normal rates of increase, with suppliers catching up on demand and trades getting adequate staffing. We are still facing challenges with expectations of what people experienced building in the 2010’s vs. today, but it’s a more balanced and healthy market than it was 5 years ago.
HAVE YOU COMPLETED SIMILAR PROJECTS TO OURS?
This is a critical question to ask a potential builder. Although every project is technically a one off prototype, ensure you’re getting a competent builder who has completed similar work. You don’t want someone learning how to build on your project. Also, confirm they have working relationships with subcontractors.
HOW ARE PROJECT CHANGES HANDLED?
All projects have an owner contingency; in other words, money in the contract value earmarked for unforeseen conditions, design changes, and owner changes. The contingency can only be used with owner approval and is tracked on a contingency log providing cushion for changes. We provide detailed pricing with all changes so informed decisions can be made at any given time.
WHAT IS YOUR AVAILABILITY FOR OUR PROPOSED PROJECT TIMEFRAME?
This should be one of the first questions you ask a potential builder. You should be looking for a builder who is excited about
your project and will put priority to it, not just one who will squeeze it in.
This varies based on project depending on site conditions, zoning requirements, flood plain, neighbors, hillside lot requirements, HOA’s and which municipality the project falls within. Often, the best first step is a site plan and preliminary review of the project with the building department to make sure what you want is allowed. This can save tons of headache down the road.
At Socon, during pre-construction, we establish a preliminary budget and schedule showing milestone durations for every project. The goal is to account for all design milestones, city review cycles and construction activities to ensure everyone on the team is held accountable. This process keeps potential surprises mitigated before they become real speed-bumps.
This is heavily driven by individual owner preferences and/or the style of a hired designer. Overall, we are seeing more natural materials/earth tones and softer colors.

PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS
If your pet shows signs of discomfort or pain (limping, whining, yelping, or avoiding being touched), it may indicate a musculoskeletal, joint or spinal issue.
DECREASED ACTIVITY LEVELS
A noticeable reduction in your pet’s energy or activity levels can be a sign of discomfort. Increased irritability or changes in behavior can also equate to pain.
Dubbed the Valley’s holistic healer in animal chiropractics, Dr. Chris Campo, D.C. believes that with his services and treatment, many pets can avoid taking certain medications, dodge various surgeries, and enjoy a longer lifespan and better quality of life. He proudly provides the finest chiropractic wellness care to patients, both 4-legged and two.
BEHAVIORAL CHANGES
If your pet is reluctant to move or stiff, like unwilling to jump, climb stairs, or engage in normal activities, it may be experiencing discomfort.
Struggling with activities they previously performed with ease, such as jumping into a car or onto furniture, can indicate a problem.
Steeped in centuries of preserved tradition, the revived retreat reopens its doors redefining the magical Kona Coast
PHOTOGRAPHY BY KONA VILLAGE, A ROSEWOOD RESORT
In 2023, Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, awakened the subliminal magic that stirs deep within the salted sands and illuminated waters, giving guests the chance to embrace its richly restorative properties once again.
Built into the black lava flow with views toward the Hualālai volcano, Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, honors the elements that make the island hideaway so beloved, particularly the Hawaiian tradition of hoʻokipa: hospitality of complete giving.
Spanning 81 acres of stunning geologic landscape, the resort is guided by Rosewood’s A Sense of Place® philosophy drawing inspiration from heritage, culture, and natural surroundings while embracing island time via a luxurious retreat. In addition to the highest-density Hawaiian petroglyph field in the world, the land is also home to 22 anchialine pools, which house some of Hawaiʻi’s rarest endemic species.
Indulge in a freestanding hale, where you can choose among a collection of oneto-four bedrooms, each offering unique views of gardens, lagoon, mountains, lava rock or ocean. Interiors blur the line between indoors and out with carefully selected natural materials, custom-made furnishings, expansive private lanais, soaking tubs and outdoor showers. These traditional Hawaiian structures offer the private comfort of a refined beach bungalow ideal for romancers or families.
Venture the property via complimentary cruiser bikes, and along with two view-worthy pools, additional recreational facilities include tennis, paddle, and bocce ball courts as well as a stateof-the-art fitness center.
At the heart of Kona Village lies Kilo Kai, the property’s Ocean Pursuits program. As the resort sits on Kahuwai Bay, guests can connect with knowledgeable watermen and women who lead guided activities spanning sunrise paddles, canoe surfing, snorkeling and boating excursions.
Mindful programming is extended through Kona Village’s Rosewood Explorers Keiki Club, the local interpretation of Rosewood’s forward-thinking kids’ club concept. Designed to foster cultural appreciation and social responsibility in younger guests, the club’s activities stimulate the next generation of conscious travelers.
Rooted in a focus on fresh, local ingredients, international influences, and indigenous practices, Kona Village’s array of restaurants and bars serves to both elucidate and enhance Hawaiʻi’s unique culinary landscape.
Moana, the resort’s signature restaurant, features an elevated, Pacific Rimto-table experience, while Kahuwai Cookhouse and Market flaunts traditional Hawaiian cooking techniques. Sip and snack on sushi at The Shipwreck Bar, along with enjoying beverages at the beach bar, Talk Story.
Food for thought, here are some must have meals spanning the property’s vast menus:

Check Local Trick-or-Treating Hours
Before heading out, check your community’s official trick-or-treating hours. Many neighborhoods have set times for when it’s okay to knock on doors. Stick to these hours
Make Costumes Visible
Ensure costumes are fun and safe by adding reflective tape or glow sticks Visibility is key to avoiding accidents, especially as it gets dark.
Kindness Truly Matters
Children with autism or special needs often carry blue Halloween pumpkins or blue candy bags to signal that they require additional time or consideration while trick-o-treating Even children without special needs can become overwhelmed at any time during the festivities, and should be given the opportunity to enjoy the evening just like everyone else. I love when teens (or even college-aged kids) knock at my door and act like kids again
Inspect Candy Before Eating
Check candy for tampering or unwrapped items before eating While rare, it's better to be cautious. Have a “candy party” – kids can sort and trade their candy at the end of the night (even for the Switch Witch, a favorite in my home- look it up!) while you ensure everything is safe
Be Mindful of Neighbors’ Property
Respect homeowners’ property by not stepping on lawns, plants, or decorations. Be courteous to those who aren’t participating if their front lights are off.

When I read Celeste Ng’s debut novel, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s a story about women who miss out on living the lives they dreamt of. It is an exploration of how a woman’s absence can shape a family as dramatically as her presence can. Set in 1977, the book begins with the stunning revelation that “Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” Lydia is a bright and complicated teen, and when she goes missing, the family is reminded of a painful memory: Lydia’s mother, Marilyn, once disappeared as well. Her absence left a painful emptiness and fear behind that never abated even after she returned. In the dual-timeline story, we see a tiny Lydia hiding under a table clutching her mother’s Betty Crocker cookbook, which becomes her comfort. To Marilyn, it is a reminder of her own mother who rejected and abandoned her; recipes shared between mothers and daughters, the secrets to forging a life you were told to want.
Food is front and center in this memoir by Rabia Chaudry, daughter of Pakistani immigrants who bring flavors and recipes to life as she recounts the joys of her culture. Food is a defining aspect of the author’s life, like her mother letting her gnaw on butter as a baby. The author also honestly digs deep into body image and beauty perceptions, and it is eye-opening to read about how weight is discussed in other cultures. It also includes several Pakistani recipes.
Described “The Great British Bake Off” meets “Only Murders in the Building,” this terrifically clever debut novel shares the story of a baking competition from seven points of view: six contestants plus the iconic beloved baker Betsy Martin, host of the show. The TV worthy desserts may be sweet, but with a murderer in their midst, no one can be trusted. The book is heading to Hulu as a series.

OUR Q&A WITH SAM FOX ON 5 THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT THE GLOBAL AMBASSADOR
HOW DID YOU DECIDE ON THE MULTIPLE DINING CONCEPTS AT THE HOTEL?
Sam: It was an organic process, but I knew I wanted an array of restaurants that highlight my favorite dishes and flavors from countries and cultures around the world. From Le Âme and Le Market’s classic French fare, to Pink Dolphin’s whimsical Mexican and Peruvian-inspired menu, to the Lobby Bar’s sophisticated and lively vibe, and finally to our rooftop jewel, théa, we want guests to have everything under one roof.
PRO TIPS ON ORDERING?
Sam: Indulge in the ultimate evening at the Lobby Bar by ordering the “Adult Happy Meal” featuring your choice of a perfectly crafted Vodka or Gin Martini with hand-stuffed olives, accompanied by Truffle Frites. Also, order the best quesadilla in town at our poolside restaurant.
THÉA, THE PROPERTY’S TOP-FLOOR DESTINATION, WAS INSPIRED BY THE SUN-SOAKED MEDITERRANEAN REGION. HOWEVER, THERE’S DEEPER MEANING TO THE NAME…
Sam: In Greek mythology, “thea” means “Goddess of Light,” which is perfectly apt for a picturesque sky-high setting that basks in the shadow of Arizona’s famed Camelback Mountain.
WHAT WAS YOUR VISION FOR INCORPORATING COCKTAIL HOUR INTO ROOMS AND SUITES?
Sam: We aimed to reimagine the hotel mini bar as a full-scale cocktail experience. Guests can craft their perfect drink right in their room, with premium ingredients like Withco Cocktail Mixers, large block ice, and fresh citrus for garnishes.
WHAT WENT INTO SELECTING THE LINENS?
Sam: We wanted to curate an assortment of the best linen brands available to our guests. Myself and the team sampled and tested every linen in the building spanning sheets to towels. Most hotels would have one line of linens in guest rooms, but we selected three varieties for linens, towels and robes.
