This one's for the girls...

When I found out Devin Booker’s agent was a Valley mom, I knew I had to track her down. Luckily for both of us, our shared background in journalism gave me an edge—she respected the persistence. She took my call.

I told her it was our Women’s Issue and that I wanted to share her story. To be the business behind Booker (among others)… a woman… a mom… and someone with such an intriguing, high-powered job? I had to get it.

Our conversation was raw and real. Jess doesn’t sugarcoat things—and neither do I. She didn’t want the spotlight. She wasn’t looking for attention. But I pushed. Why? Because within minutes, I knew she was a force: brilliant, sharp, and quietly bad*ss. She had a story worth telling. After a few persuasive follow-up texts, she said yes. She trusted me with her story—and I was honored. And honestly, a tad terrified. I wanted to get it right.

Fast forward to now—Jess and I have a newfound friendship, and she’s as real and cool as they come.

We kept Jess’s story in a Q&A format—direct and honest. But the most incredible moment? When I asked if she thought Devin would pose with her on the cover. Her answer: an immediate yes. Because he supports her and believes in lifting women. This cover? It’s not just a photo. It’s a testament to friendship, respect, and the bond of business.

This issue took on a life of its own. I interviewed Danielle Frost, the powerhouse behind The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation—another woman who rarely shares her story, but said yes. We spotlight 24-year-old Giuliana Maggiore, Chef Joey’s daughter, who bravely opened up about facing lymphoma. And we feature Kalani Hilliker, who got real about growing up in the spotlight and navigating her mental health journey. Just… wow.

This issue is full of fierce, fearless, fabulous female forces. Women who lead with strength, grace, talent, and resilience. Women who show up for their families while chasing big dreams. Women who inspire.

As we celebrate this Women’s Issue—and Mother’s Day—I want to say this: being a mom is the hardest, most beautiful role there is. It’s not a title; it’s a superpower. It’s giving, juggling, loving, guiding, and still showing up—for your family, your work, and yourself. To every mom doing her best (and wondering if it’s enough): it is. You are.

Women & Heart Health

It’s the #1 killer of women—yet many don’t even see it coming.

Each year, heart disease takes the lives of 1 in 3 women in the U.S.— that’s more than all cancers combined. Even more alarming? Only half of women are aware that it’s their leading health threat.

The Subtle Signs

Unlike the chest-clutching dramatics often portrayed in movies, women’s heart attack symptoms can be quiet and easy to miss:

• Persistent fatigue

• Shortness of breath

• Nausea or dizziness

• Discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back

These warning signs are often mistaken for stress, hormones, or the flu— and too often, they go ignored. “Women’s symptoms are frequently misread—not just by others, but by women themselves.”

Nearly 45% of women over 20 have some form of cardiovascular disease.

Most women have at least one risk factor—like high blood pressure, diabetes, or elevated cholesterol. Many never realize their risk until it’s too late.

Prevention is Power

• Know your numbers – Track blood pressure, cholesterol, & blood sugar

• Move your body – 30 minutes of daily movement is heart-smart

• Eat for wellness – Prioritize whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats

• Manage stress – Chronic stress can silently raise blood pressure

• Stay proactive – Regular check-ups and screenings save lives

Concerned About Your Heart? I’m Here for You.

If you have questions about your heart health or want to take preventive steps, I’m here to help. As an interventional cardiologist specializing in structural heart and valve disease, I offer personalized consultations—including advanced screening options like the Coronary Artery Calcium Score. Together, we can develop a tailored plan to safeguard your heart health.

A YARD MADE FOR

Meet NBA Agent Jessica Holtz

Powerhouse agent, wife, and mom behind some of the NBA’s biggest stars—including our very own #1

Just another day in the “office” for Jessica Holtz—on set at a Nike photoshoot in the Arizona desert with her client, Devin Booker.

The powerhouse agent, wife, and mom is the force behind some of the NBA’s biggest stars, including our very own #1. But this time, she’s sharing her story.

Apprehensive about being our May cover, Jess stepped out of her comfort zone for a  why that mattered, letting us spotlight the fierce, fearless woman helping run Devin’s incredible ship.

But the bigger story? The unshakable bond between Jess and Booker. His willingness to jump in for the cover shoot wasn’t just for the camera—it reflected their decade-long partnership built on trust, loyalty, and respect.

She and PVCL’s Nadine Bubeck sat down to dive into Jess’s journey—one that will leave you inspired and give you a deeper look at the woman behind the business… and the relationship behind the photo.

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP AND WHAT WERE YOUR ASPIRATIONS?

I grew up in New Jersey, attended Penn State, and majored in Broadcast Journalism, aiming to be a sports reporter. But once I tried it, I didn’t love it, so I pivoted—landing an internship at the NBA League office, behind the camera.

YOU’RE THE OLDEST OF THREE GIRLS. DID YOU GROW UP AS A SPORTS FAN?

My dad is a die-hard Knicks/Jets/Mets/Rangers fan. So, to spend time with my dad, you had to spend time with all those teams

Growing up, my favorite player was Patrick Ewing.

My dad and I are very close and as a fan, he still is in awe that I represent Karl-Anthony Towns on the New York Knicks… it’s unbelievably full circle.

DID YOU PLAY SPORTS YOURSELF?

I played basketball and soccer through eighth grade and tennis in high school. I love competition and always loved what team sports did to enrich me.

WHAT WAS THE TRANSITION BETWEEN YOUR NBA INTERNSHIP AND YOUR FIRST FULL-TIME JOB?

I gained so much from my NBA internship and was eager to return. When a role opened in player marketing, I jumped at it. I didn’t envision a marketing career, but it had all of the traits of what I wanted in a job. My day-to-day was booking appearances, securing marketing deals, handling PR, and managing community events for former and current players.

At 22, I was looking after NBA greats that I had watched growing up.

WERE YOU STARSTRUCK?

I was, but I wasn’t. Obviously, the gravity of who they were was not lost on me, but I very quickly realized that they were people albeit quite successful, famous ones.

WERE YOU ONE OF THE ONLY WOMEN ON STAFF?

I’ve been the only female in the room a lot of times.  I did have women there that I looked up to though, some of whom are still there today.

HOW DID YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION TO BECOMING AN AGENT?

I’d maximized my role at the League office and craved something more entrepreneurial. My hard work paid off when both Excel Sports Management and CAA pursued me, seeing my potential on the player side of the business.

WHAT DOES A SPORTS AGENT DO?

I oversee everything for my clients— from managing their careers and contracts to endorsements and business ventures—allowing them to focus solely on basketball. If they have a dream, I’ll do anything in my power to make it happen.

My days consist of phone calls, meetings and travel. I’ll do whatever is needed to do to build successful businesses.

WHAT WAS YOUR ROLE WHEN YOU JOINED CAA?

When I got to CAA, my job was a marketing agent. Immediately, I was assigned to NBA All-Stars including Chris Paul who is super marketable and incredibly talented.

My job was to work on off-court deals—trading card deals, TV commercials, appearances, etc.

I love people—who they are, what drives them, and what they need. I meet people where they are, take time to understand their story, and find meaningful ways to support them.

HOW DID DEVIN BOOKER BECOME YOUR CLIENT?

I wasn’t initially assigned to Devin. However, Devin noticed how I worked with other clients in their draft class, and he decided that we would work well together.

I put everything into my job because I genuinely care about my clients; their happiness and career success are my focus, and I work hard to earn their trust.

From day one, I knew Devin was different. He is mature beyond his years and his emotional intelligence is off the charts.

WHAT WAS YOUR LONG-TERM VISION FOR DEVIN?

I knew he was going to make an impact on PHX forever. He is the Suns all-time leading scorer and a formative figure. He is a beloved legend to the city.

EVERYTHING CHANGED IN 2020, RIGHT?

In 2020, when Leon Rose, my partner at CAA, left to become the President of the New York Knicks, yes, everything changed.

BTS Nike Photoshoot

At that point, Leon and I had been working with Karl and Devin for five years. In consultation with each of them separately, the conclusion was that I needed to get certified to be an NBA-licensed agent.

To negotiate with an NBA team, you must be licensed, and it was not an easy test. It takes tons of preparation and a high level of basketball acumen. I’m incredibly proud that I passed the test while eight months pregnant.

YOU’RE A BUSINESSWOMAN AND LOVE YOUR WORK. BUT YOU’RE ALSO A WIFE AND WOMAN WHO WANTED A BABY.

I thought to myself when and where does this fit in and how do I pursue my dreams. I figured it out because it’s something I really wanted.

SO, EIGHT MONTHS PREGNANT, YOU BECAME A CERTIFIED AGENT?

Yes. I was already acting as one, but it became official, allowing me to negotiate their contracts... those monumental supermax extensions.

WHO DO YOU CURRENTLY REPRESENT?

Right now, my roster consists of Devin Booker, Chris Paul, Karl-Anthony Towns, Elena Delle Donne, and Alysha Clark.

I started working with WNBA players because I’m passionate about empowering women. I felt like I could take some of the wealth of what I learned in the men’s game and share it in the women’s game. That is incredibly fulfilling.

DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A WOMAN IN A MAN’S BUSINESS?

Yes. People ask about the challenges, but I focus on the advantages. I can talk to my clients in a different way than they might speak to a male agent. I have empathy in a different way. I think being a mother also helps me.

Every now and then, I get a cold splash of water in my face reminding me that I am a woman in a “perceived” man’s world, in their minds… and that some people don’t initially take me seriously. However, my clients are incredibly empowering.

I have great responsibility to my clients, am always thinking strategically, and am very aware in business the cards can be stacked against women.

NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE COULD DO YOUR JOB SUCCESSFULLY. WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES AN IDEAL AGENT?

Male or female, you must be focused, strong and determined. The players I work with are human, and I’m human, and we talk on that most basic level... which is why we work well together.

Some agents and their clients can be very transactional. That is not our story, and it will never be that story with my clients.

WHY DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENTS ARE THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU?

My clients are unique and without generalizing, there are common threads with each of them.  They understand that

REESE IS GROWING UP WATCHING YOU WEAR A LOT OF HATS.

She doesn’t think of mommy’s and daddy’s jobs any differently. She gets annoyed when I leave sometimes, but she also gets to do cool things thanks to my work. Her Uncles and Aunts- who she gets to watch night in and night out in the NBA- are her favorite people.

WAS IT A HARD DECISION TO MOVE OUT HERE?

We miss our family on the East Coast, but our families love coming here and getting some sunshine. We have a sense of family here; Devin’s network, my professional network, and a lot of wonderful friends we’ve made.

YOU AND DEVIN SEEM TO HAVE A UNIQUE BOND.

I consider Devin family, and we have known one another over ten years. We root for each other’s success always.

MANY IN THE VALLEY WOULD SAY THAT DEVIN IS PART OF  THEIR  FAMILY. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU WHEN YOU SEE KIDS WEARING HIS JERSEY AND SWOONING OVER HIS EVERY MOVE?

I love how the people here love and appreciate Devin because he’s insanely good at basketball, and an amazing person with a lot to offer his community, his friends, and his family. He’s beyond generous with his time and his energy.

YOUR JOB FEELS NORMAL TO YOU, BUT IT’S NOT NORMAL TO MOST PEOPLE.

I don’t realize that until I take a moment to reflect—like when kids meet Devin and say it’s the best day of their life.

I try to understand that, and I have moments where it really sinks in.

CAN YOU GIVE AN EXAMPLE?

At an NBA All-Star game, Uncle Karl was signing autographs, and Reese was watching it all unfold. I could see her wheels turning and processing the long lines of fans waiting for a signature.

She asked if she could get something signed, which is funny because, despite how close we are, she’s never had anything autographed by him or any of my clients.

She was too nervous to stand in line, so I had to do it for her. Watching it all happen was an interesting moment for me—a reminder of how much Karl means to many people.

DOES THAT PERSPECTIVE SHIFT HOW YOU VIEW YOUR JOB?

It’s my job, and I view it as normal, but the stories we tell are important to people.

Part of my advantage is that I  don’t view it as something extraordinary. But it is

There will be moments when I will take a step back and think about it all and what it all means….

CONTINUED >

WHY DO YOU THINK YOUR CLIENTS HAVE STUCK WITH YOU ALL THIS TIME?

I care. It’s simple. There are a lot of agents. There are a lot of people you pass through.

They want to be successful, and I want them to be successful. But most of all, I care about my clients as people who are human beings, first and foremost. And that, I think, is my differentiating factor.

WHEN YOUR CLIENTS ARE PLAYING AGAINST EACH OTHER, WHO DO YOU ROOT FOR?

Everybody to have a good game.

DO YOU EVER WEAR THEIR JERSEYS?

No jerseys. No affiliation.

ARE YOU THE LOUD, CHEERING TYPE?

When the Suns lost in the Finals—I felt it with Phoenix. The plane ride home… I was in shambles. Plus, it was Chris and Devin, and it broke my heart because I wanted success so badly for them.

I’m involved, but way more even keeled than a normal fan because this is a business.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY WITH DEVIN?

He’d always wanted to be on the cover of  NBA 2K, and I happened to be traveling to Arizona for business (before I moved here) and I got the call that he finally landed the cover of NBA2K23, and I was so excited.

He was still at practice, and I was at his house waiting hardly able to contain myself… counting down the minutes to share the good news.

It was a dream come true for him, and when I told him, he was totally in shock, called his mom, and then we popped champagne to celebrate.

That moment sticks with me vividly.

WHAT OTHER MAGIC HAVE YOU MADE HAPPEN? LIKE, ALL THOSE SHOE DEALS…

It takes a team to make things happen, and while I sometimes lead the charge, other times I step back. CAA has an incredible infrastructure, and my team helps make it all possible.

WE WERE LUCKY TO PIGGYBACK THE NIKE PHOTOSHOOT AND GRAB SOME SHOTS OF YOU AND DEVIN FOR THE MAGAZINE. WAS BRINGING THIS VISION TO LIFE EXACTLY HOW YOU IMAGINED?

Devin, as you know, has a deep passion for vintage cars —he knows every detail and story behind each car.  We decided we wanted to merge that love with his signature Nike shoe line, telling the story of his cars through his shoes. It all worked beautifully against the desert backdrop.

CONTINUED >

Pairing Nike and Chevy was a natural fit. The partnership is perfect—Devin drives only American cars, and his shoes reflect that. The materials, details, and logos all match, and we can’t wait for people to see it.

Devin is incredibly meticulous about storytelling through his shoes—every element is intentional.

DO YOU WEAR BOOKER SHOES ALL THE TIME?

Always. For this shoot, I picked my outfit first then went into my closet to pair my Books. For this shoot in the desert, I felt like Mowabbs were right.

WHAT DOES THE SHOE PHENOMENON MEAN TO YOU? EVERYONE WANTS THEM.

What’s cool about Devin being a Nike signature shoe athlete is that there are only five in the NBA… Nike is very selective. They wanted Devin for his play, his style and for who he is.

It was a big accomplishment. When we found out that he was getting a signature shoe, that was another big day for us. Another dream come true.

DEVIN DOESN’T DO MANY LOCAL MAGAZINE COVERS—HOW DID IT FEEL KNOWING HE WAS SO WILLING TO DO THIS WITH YOU?

His support means a great deal. I didn’t want to ask, but I knew he’d say yes—he’s backed me since day one.

He’s always championed women’s empowerment. His mom and his sister are his “why.”

HOW DID YOU FEEL POSING WITH HIM FOR THE COVER?

It was very cool to reflect on all the amazing things we’ve done and how we have grown together. Ten years is a long time. He’s done so much in his career, and I am proud to say we have done it together. That’s special.

WERE THE OLYMPICS SURREAL?

It was a special moment on a professional level as I had never been to the Olympics. Seeing one of my clients play on such a global stage made me so proud. And now living here, I see how much Devin being on Team USA meant to this community.

ARE YOU PROUD OF YOURSELF AND ALL YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED?

I am trying to be someone my daughter can look up to, and one day, I know she’ll understand all of this.

It’s a hard question to answer—but am I proud of myself? Yes, and I hope Reese will be proud of me. That is the best way to answer this question.

WHAT’S DATE NIGHT LIKE FOR YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND JEFF?

If we’re not at  The Global Ambassador, we’re home watching NBA or WNBA games on multiple screens.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A MOM?

I’m a hands-on mom who values experiences over expectations. I want my daughter to explore, be curious, and find her own way—I’m just here to guide her. I try to strike a balance between enriching her life and not over-giving… though it’s hard because she’s really cute.

WITH THE HIGH STAKES OF YOUR JOB, DO YOU EVER GET NERVOUS?

I was more nervous to do this cover photoshoot, but I agreed to do it because the  why made sense to me. The  why is telling an authentic story about women in business, and a woman here in the Valley that people don’t know.

I’m in a new place and sharing my story to this community that I now call home could be inspirational. I owe that to young, aspiring businesswomen to dream bigger.

WHAT’S ON YOUR PLAYLIST?

80s rock and Fleetwood Mac. Most recently introduced Karl and his girlfriend Jordyn Woods to the magic of Stevie Nicks, too.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD?

Moving here without family, we were met with such warmth—it instantly felt like home.

Dropping my daughter off at school for the first time in a new place was one of the hardest days of my life, but the kindness of fellow parents made all the difference. This community is full of amazing people who genuinely want to help and see you succeed.

In New York, you barely know your neighbors. Here, ambition and support go hand in hand. Life is easier. I even notice the little things—like a smiley face hand drawn on my Press coffee. A message I want to pass onto my daughter?

Be good and kind. Appreciate people. Work hard, play hard.

Realign. Rebalance. Ride better.

THE FORCE BEHIND THE LARRY FITZGERALD FOUNDATION SHARES HER WHY

DANIELLE FROST GETS PERSONAL

Danielle Frost is the Executive Director of The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, which advances youth education and breast cancer awareness through grants, mobile mammograms, and vital support for those facing difficult health journeys.

What followed was a whirlwind. A mammogram. A biopsy. A phone call. Cancer.

“I was crushed. It felt like the air left the room.”

The first time she walked into a doctor’s office, she expected professionalism

“I DON’T USUALLY TELL MY STORY; IT’S DEEPLY PERSONAL.”

However, she never imagined that journey would become her own.

“I’m beginning to share my story more openly… not because it’s easy, but because it’s deeply personal.”

After years in philanthropy, event production and working with professional athletes, Danielle found herself in a more personally fulfilling role—leading The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, created by Larry Fitzgerald, Jr. in honor of his mother, Carol Fitzgerald after losing her to breast cancer.

“Larry’s heart for this cause is so real. He’s not just a name on a foundation.”

Danielle poured herself into the mission—building campaigns, partnerships, and support for women fighting for their health. And ultimately, she became one of them.

“I wasn’t overly concerned. But something told me to get it checked.”

There were no symptoms. No warnings. Just an ordinary morning in the shower when she felt a lump.

and compassion; however, she was met with condescension and dismissal.

“I had one doctor ask me if we had a Zoom call together in preparation for my first appointment. I shared that we did not and he simply replied, ‘OK.’ At that point, I knew he didn’t know who I was as a person, not to mention a patient. In response to me he said, ‘What difference does it make? You already have cancer.’”

At first, Danielle felt upset and defeated. Then, it motivated her.

“I called Larry and we worked together to find a new doctor in my network. Eventually we found a team who listened.”

Danielle learned firsthand what too many women experience – some doctors rush appointments and make choices for patients instead of with them.

“Women cannot be paralyzed by fear.”

In addition to processing the diagnosis, she also shielded her son.

“I didn’t want to tell my little boy. All a mom strives to do is protect her children.”

CONTINUED >

“WE

CANNOT BE PARALYZED BY FEAR.”

Danielle made the difficult decision to have an aggressive surgery based on the information she had at the time. After careful consideration, with chemotherapy and radiation not being an option for the type of cancer and diagnosis at that time, Danielle decided to have a bi-lateral mastectomy.

“Breast cancer doesn’t start and stop in October when the world decides to turn everything pink.”

Through The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, she’s committed to providing year-round resources.

“I think about the women who don’t have a support system and it breaks my heart.”

For nearly a year, Danielle believed her fight was over. Then, she discovered a lump in the exact same place.

“It was a gut punch. I did everything right. I made the hard choices. And it still wasn’t enough. One doctor said they got it, and another said it was never gone in the first place. It just didn’t add up.”

This time, Danielle approached it differently. She was stronger and more informed.

“I had to advocate for myself because no one was going to do it for me like me.”

And through it all, Larry was there – not just professionally, but as a friend who had lived the fight alongside his own mother.

“Larry checked in and gave me the space to handle it my way.”

Doctors rushed to create another plan: providing options for more surgery, radiation, and what felt like a lifetime of fear. And that’s when Danielle realized that even doctors at the highest level of their profession aren’t always on the same page.

“I wanted to explore my options and be as educated as possible. If I’ve learned anything, women must fight for themselves. We must research and ask questions about terms and details we don’t understand.”

Danielle decided to have a lumpectomy to remove the mass she found for the second time as she continues to be a champion of self advocacy. That’s why she continues to push the mission of The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation forward.

“We don’t just talk about breast cancer awareness. We take action.”

Danielle never set out to be the face of this fight—she was always more comfortable behind the scenes, making things happen. But she soon realized, “By using my voice, I can help others speak louder.”

Spinning Forward: Giuliana Maggiore’s Story of Strength and Inspiration

The 24-year-old shares her journey with lymphoma, embracing resilience, hope, and personal growth

When 24-year-old Giuliana Maggiore, daughter of celebrated Valley Chef Joey Maggiore, received a notification on her phone about her biopsy results, she never expected to read the words “Follicular Lymphoma.” In that moment, she did what many would do—she called her dad.

What followed was a journey that would reveal not just the strength within the Maggiore family, but Giuliana’s own remarkable resilience and vision for her future.

“I was sick the whole month of December with a cold that would not go away,” Giuliana shares.

It started with what seemed like a persistent cold, accompanied by an abnormal lymph node in her groin that continued to grow.

The path from suspicion to diagnosis wasn’t swift. There were endless tests to figure things out. Giuliana was diagnosed in January and did not start treatment until March. That period of waiting tested her patience, but Giuliana found strength in her family’s embrace.

“My family was so sad and stressed; everyone came to my house and started calling doctors and helping.”

The swift mobilization of her support system would become crucial in the days ahead.

Thankfully, Giuliana’s cancer diagnosis was treatable; the plan consisted of 12 sessions of radiation. While many cancer patients find themselves sidelined by treatment, Giuliana made the conscious decision to maintain as much normalcy as possible.

“My daily routine has changed since starting treatment and getting diagnosed,” she explains. “I was getting up early for my 7 a.m. radiation appointments and hanging out with my mom every day. After radiation, a wave of fatigue would hit me so I would nap for two hours, and then at night, I would go to the gym or spin class.”

Spin class emerged as a central theme in Giuliana’s story. More than just exercise, the classes became her sanctuary.

“I noticed the days I didn’t exercise were always my worst days.”

Her diagnosis prompted her to reevaluate not just her schedule, but her entire approach to wellness.

“I have made pretty big changes to my diet. I now eat an anti-inflammatory diet, seed oil free and refined sugar free. I feel so good eating this clean.”

This was a significant change for someone whose family has built their legacy in the restaurant industry.

“I do miss eating the foods I loved. I haven’t been able to enjoy my family’s restaurants the way I used to, but this is a personal choice.”

This approach—taking ownership of her wellness while undergoing medical treatment—reflects Giuliana’s proactive mindset. Rather than seeing herself as a passive recipient of care, she has positioned herself as an active participant in her recovery.

“I was always on the go—eating out often, doing spin classes twice a day, and pushing through even when I felt sick. Now I realize rest is just as important as movement.”

One of the most profound impacts of her diagnosis has been on her relationships.

“A lot of my relationships have changed throughout this process. People’s true colors really show when you’re going through a challenge in life.”

However, her devout family’s response has been nothing short of heroic.

“My parents and siblings have put their lives on hold to be there for me and I am so grateful. My parents have been to every single appointment and have done everything to make sure we’re doing all the right things. My brother and sister never failed to make me laugh. They do a good job making life feel normal.”

Beyond family, Giuliana’s friendships have evolved.

“It was really hard for me to tell my friends or talk about it, but when my friends found out, everyone was so supportive.”

As Giuliana looks ahead, her passion for spin classes has evolved into something more... a calling.

“I am looking forward to getting back into my normal routine. I had been training to be a spin instructor but took a small break.”

Having found strength in exercise during her treatment, she’s eager to create that space for others who might be facing their own challenges.

Robyn Patterson

“Even prior to my diagnosis, my main focus has been my health so now my goal is to be as fit and strong as possible.”

When asked what advice she would give to someone newly diagnosed with lymphoma, her response is immediate and heartfelt.

“Keep your head up and do whatever you need to do to make you feel best, whether that means a diet change or a new workout routine to keep yourself motivated. You are not alone.”

With her treatment in the past, Giuliana is already thinking about what comes next.

“I want to travel and have fun with my family and friends. I’ve realized I need to enjoy life and live every day the way that makes me happy. I used to take time for granted, but now time feels more meaningful.”

Yet, there’s a sense that this experience, while not one she would have chosen, has given her gifts she couldn’t have anticipated—perspective, resilience, and a powerful story to share.

“If I could go back in time and tell myself one thing before all this started, it would be: don’t rush to make a lot of decisions.”

As the daughter famed Chef Joey, Giuliana is carving her own path—honoring her family’s legacy while embracing her passion for wellness. Now finished with treatment, she awaits answers at her next PET scan in June.

The Stylist Behind the Suit

HOW ONE VALLEY GIRL BECAME THE GO-TO STYLIST FOR PRO ATHLETES AND A-LISTERS

When elite athletes and A-listers need next-level style, they call Lindsey Tamblyn. The founder of LT Custom Style—behind Brock Purdy’s Super Bowl suit and countless pro looks—is redefining custom menswear. Here, Lindsey shares how she built it all.

“No budget is too small (though I once had $50K to play around with). Even one item matters if it builds trust through a great experience.”

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST GIG IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?

When I was young, I worked at boutiques... primarily for the discount :) In 2010, I joined Trunk Club as one of its first employees and helped grow the startup into a team of 1,500.

My business is 90% relationships, 10% clothes. Making people feel good in what they wear is what I love most.

DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE A HIGH-END CLIENTELE, OR DID THAT COME LATER?

I built my entire book of business from my personal network. When I started at Trunk Club, I was 27 and thought, Who do I know that could afford this? So, I sought to connect with the baseball world because I had close friends that played and coached.

I asked if vendors were allowed at spring training. With 40+ players per team, it was a huge opportunity. That first year, I visited the Diamondbacks, Braves, and White Sox—and got in front of the right people.

Over time, I built a reputation and eventually gained access to nearly every MLB team.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO LAUNCH LTC?

In 2017, after Nordstrom acquired Trunk Club, there was too much corporate red tape. I realized I wanted more control and the ability to truly serve my clients the right way. I had already built my business and knew how to run it.

Client Aaron Judge & Lindsay

EXPLAIN THE LTC BUSINESS MODEL.

I don’t carry inventory. Everything is custom and made-to-order, which gives me total flexibility. I can go to the clients home or office, or they can come to my showroom, creating a high-end, personal experience.

YOU MOVED FROM LA TO SAN FRANCISCO BEFORE LANDING IN SCOTTSDALE—WHY AZ?

After years of spring training visits, U of A roots, and a strong client base, I moved to Scottsdale in 2019. I aimed to go local, but the pandemic pushed me nationwide—now I’m refocusing on Arizona.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS WORK WHEN SOMEONE BOOKS WITH YOU?

It starts with a conversation—work, lifestyle, needs. Whether building from scratch or refining, everything is fully custom.

WHAT KINDS OF ITEMS ARE YOU CREATING?

Everything—suits, sports coats, tuxedos, dress shirts, jeans, cashmere sweaters, polos, outerwear, belts, etc. Standard turnaround is 4-6 weeks, but I can rush orders.

HOW DO YOU ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES TO CUSTOM PIECES?

I offer monogramming, custom linings with photos, names, wedding dates, and unique details like underthe-collar embroidery. Clients can select buttons, stitching and fabric.

DO YOU WORK WITH WOMEN TOO?

Yes! I offer custom suiting, slacks, blazers as well as personal shopping and closet clean-outs/edits.

YOU’VE WORKED WITH SOME BIG NAMES. ANY MEMORABLE MOMENTS?

I made Brock Purdy’s Super Bowl suit- totally cool. I’ve also created suits for Golden Globe winners and musicians. Recently, some of my clients from the Dodgers are wearing my suits to the White House.

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO SEE YOUR WORK ON TV OR SOCIAL MEDIA?

It’s surreal, especially when clients tag me or give a shoutout without being asked. Mets player Pete Alonso once did an interview saying, Lindsey at LTC makes unbelievable bespoke garments, and I had no idea until someone sent me the clip.

Client Mike Mcglinchey, Denver Broncos
Client Brayan Abreau, Astros
“I

made Brock Purdy’s Super Bowl suit, along with Golden Globe winners, musicians, etc. Some Dodgers clients are wearing my suits to the White House.”

“Nothing is more empowering and fun than throwing on a suit made for you.”

WHAT’S IN STYLE RIGHT NOW FOR MEN?

Classic, tailored, timeless pieces. Every man should have a blazer, a great suit, a tuxedo, crisp dress shirts, quality jeans, and chinos. I help clients push beyond gray, adding earth tones, rich hues, and subtle patterns to make their wardrobe more versatile.

AND FOR WOMEN?

Nothing is more empowering and fun than throwing on a suit made for you. Think bright red or any vibrant color. I get so many compliments when I wear mine! When you want something fully custom, you get to pick all the details— it’s next-level personalization.

IS THERE A FABRIC THAT STANDS OUT AS THE BEST OF THE BEST?

Yes, I love Reda—their fabrics have beautiful colors. Vitale Barberis Canonico is another amazing mill from Italy as well as Dormeuil from England. I offer Loro Piana, Zegna, and Scabal—all luxury fabric houses.

WHAT MAKES A BLAZER $3,000?

The quality of the fabric. Luxury mills like Loro Piana or Zegna use the finest materials. Mass-produced garments are cheaper because they’re made in bulk. Custom is a one-of-one garment, tailored to perfection.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

I’m a chameleon. I can go black-tie glam or tennis-court casual on the same day.

ARE YOU SINGLE?

Very single.. Do you know someone great to introduce me to?! HAHA! No kids, but would like a family! For now, my business is my baby.

KALANI HILLIKER, UNFILTERED

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LINDSEY BIRCHFIELD

Posing in white as she anticipates her upcoming wedding, Kalani Hilliker gets candid.

“It’s pretty crazy when you think about it,” Kalani says, reflecting on her life at 24. “I’ve been doing this since I was about 10 years old. Cameras. Spotlight. Chaos. But I’m so blessed and grateful and happy to be where I’m at.”

If you were a dance kid in the 2010s, you knew Kalani. She was a lyrical powerhouse. A TV regular. The calm in the chaos of Dance Moms. But before all that? She was just a girl from the Valley whose mom signed her up for dance class at age two.

CONTINUED >

“Hard work OVER TALENT. Authenticity IS EVERYTHING. I LOVE BEING honest AND SHARING MY STORY. I HOPE IT helps others .”

“I started dancing when I was two. I did other sports— soccer, softball—but nothing stuck like dance. My teachers told my parents, ‘She was made for this.’”

That natural talent, paired with relentless discipline, paved the way for a childhood steeped in training.

“Dancing was expensive, but my parents supported me. I worked hard my whole childhood. I’m known for jazz, lyrical, and contemporary. And I’m still in dance today... as a teacher.”

By age 10, Kalani was already landing roles in major productions.

“For Shake It Up, I auditioned in a group and we ended up winning. I also auditioned for Bunheads. For Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition , they reached out to top dancers. Abby loved me and wanted me on Dance Moms.”

And just like that, her path accelerated.

“We filmed eight hours a day, six days a week. We were kids, but we weren’t dumb—we knew what was going on. Our parents tried to separate us from the drama, but I’m sure if I watched episodes, I’d see things I didn’t even know happened.”

At 12, Kalani became a fixture on Dance Moms, filming more than 100 episodes over five intense years.

“We went to a dance competition every week. We had a crazy dance teacher and crazy moms, but my mom let me shine.”

Her mom, Kira, was a constant.

“My mom wasn’t crazy, but when she snapped, she snapped. She had me at 18, so we’re close in age. Being together 24/7 on the show led to banter and bratty moments, but it brought us closer. She was always there for me, not herself.”

Despite her success, Kalani hasn’t felt the need to relive her reality TV days.

“Maybe I’ve watched one or two episodes, but not everything. It’s my childhood—I don’t need to remember everything.”

Still, there were moments that stand out.

“My 16th birthday. I got my first car on the show and had a surprise party with all my friends. That was really exciting.”

And though the show wrapped years ago, the cast remains connected.

“It’s a trauma bond. We may not talk every day, but we’re always connected. No one else will ever understand like we do. We worked so hard to get there. I learned that relationships are everything and never to burn bridges.”

After the cameras stopped rolling, Kalani took a much-needed breather.

“Dance was my job from 12 to 17. I missed out on things. I loved it, but it was intense. I moved to LA at 18; Arizona didn’t offer as much for dancers. But with COVID, I ended up moving back to Arizona.”

It was actually a tough time for the young woman to rediscover- or at least start discovering- her sense of self.

“I suppressed a lot of feelings growing up. After the show, I felt lost—no schedule, no direction. I had anxiety and depression. I didn’t ask for help right away. Eventually, therapy helped me heal. Now I’m in a better place, but it’s ongoing.”

Kalani has become an advocate for mental health and authenticity—especially on social media.

“Social media is powerful but tough—it gives people a voice, but can be harsh. I use my platform to spread positivity, stay real, and remind people they’re not alone with things like depression or anxiety. Not everyone responds kindly, but I’ve learned to block, move on, and protect my space.”

“AFTER Dance Moms ENDED, I FELT LOST—NO SCHEDULE, no direction . I HAD ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION. I WAS lonely. I DIDN’T ASK FOR HELP RIGHT AWAY. EVENTUALLY, therapy and time HELPED ME HEAL.”

While she remains a force online, Kalani’s biggest support comes from someone far from the public eye—her fiancé.

“He’s very private—only had 50 followers when I met him. No TikTok. He’s chill. We’re opposites, but it works.”

The proposal? Straight out of a fairytale.

“He popped the question at Lake Como, Italy. We’re getting married there, too.”

With a wedding ahead and a new chapter beginning, Kalani is focused on what brings her joy.

“Teaching and hopefully opening a dance studio in the Valley. I want to teach all ages and share my love of dance. I know this is what I’m meant to do.”

From HER Point of View

For our Women’s Issue, we’re spotlighting standout Valley women sharing real reflections, earned wisdom, and insight from their unique journeys

At PVCL, we skip the “Best Of” labels—because everyone’s doing their best, and who gets to decide what’s best anyway?

What we do value is fostering impact, innovation, creativity, and connection. So, for our Women’s Issue, we’re celebrating a handful of fabulous Valley females—each offering raw reflections, insights, and hard-earned wisdom from their journeys.

If you could sit down with your younger self, what would you tell her?

Having to overcome barriers teaches you to believe amazing things are possible—even when they feel like a long shot. There’s no real gain if there was no striving for the goal. When accolades come too easily or are given without being earned, people feel hollow and unworthy. Be grateful for walls—they show you how to jump higher.

I  don’t want to be remembered for “being that news lady on TV.” LOL! I’d much rather be remembered as a woman with a servant heart—someone who cared enough to help others through my role with nonprofit Hospice of the Valley.

- Lin Sue Cooney

What was the most pivotal moment in your career?

Early in my career, I went to Art Basel in Miami. When I walked through the door, I was hit with overwhelming energy— thousands of works from artists around the world. I could barely breathe.

At first, I felt small—like I didn’t belong in that space. But as I walked through the galleries and truly absorbed the work, something shifted. I stopped just admiring and started comparing. And I realized… my work could hang here. Some of it was even stronger.

I turned to my publicist in tears and said, “I belong in here. I’m good enough.” She looked at me and said, “I know. Stop doubting yourself. You belong.”

That moment buried my imposter syndrome. I left Art Basel with a fire in my soul and a belief in my voice, my vision, and my path. That shift has fueled everything I’ve built since—not just in my work, but in how I show up for my children. At the end of the day, they are my greatest masterpieces.

What defining moment in your life shaped the way you see yourself?

In 1995, I found myself as a single mother, raising two young daughters on my own, burdened by debts left behind by my ex-husband and without family support. It was one of the hardest chapters of my life—but also the most defining. The best advice I received—and still live by—was this:  I still had the power to define myself in my own way—no one could take that from me.

So, I made a conscious choice. I didn’t define myself as a “single mom.” I defined myself as a “mom of two beautiful girls.” I didn’t say I was “struggling to make ends meet.” I said I was “lucky to have opportunities.” That shift in mindset gave me strength, and it’s something I try to pass on to anyone facing life’s challenges.

That same year, I took a leap and started a business. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain—for myself and for my daughters. It was the bravest thing I’ve ever done, and it changed the course of our lives. To anyone thinking about making a big move or starting something new:  just do it. The power to redefine your story is always yours.

What’s a misconception about work-life balance you’ve let go of?

One work-life myth I’ve let go of is that being a devoted mom and a driven professional are at odds. Balance isn’t about choosing—it’s about integrating both in a way that fits my values and my family.

The most difficult challenge I’ve faced was losing my son to stillbirth at 35.5 weeks. The grief was all-consuming, making even the simplest tasks—like getting out of bed—feel impossible. But I had a one-year-old daughter who needed me, and despite the overwhelming pain, I knew I had to be present for her.

In those moments, I didn’t want to work or think about the future. Yet deep down, I knew my passions and purpose hadn’t disappeared, even though my world had shattered. I refused to let my life slip away because of this tragedy. Instead, I chose to keep going—not just for my daughter, but in honor of my son, my husband, my now second daughter, and the patients who rely on me.

Healing wasn’t linear, and some days were harder than others. Loss changes you, but it doesn’t have to define you. I carry my son’s memory with me every day, using his presence as a source of strength rather than sorrow.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Grow a strong network. I never truly understood the value of the people you surround yourself with until I started my own business and began growing it both locally and nationally. My network inspires me, supports me, and serves as a source of mentorship. I’m constantly trying to learn from those around me, and this community is a big part of what keeps me motivated—even on the hard days. I even created a local group of physicians and attorneys who meet every other month for events with an educational component, helping us all continue to grow our businesses together.

As for work-life balance, I’ve let go of the idea that it’s something you can achieve. To me, it’s more about work-life integration—interweaving personal and professional responsibilities in a way that aligns with my values and goals. I’ve learned to make intentional decisions about where to focus my time and energy each day.

“Embracing failure as a stepping stone to success has been instrumental in my journey.”
-Paige Dimakos

What’s something about you that most people don’t know?

My experience as a competitive figure skater has profoundly shaped who I am today. I fell in love with skating at age four after attending the Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway, and meeting Nancy Kerrigan. This passion led to over a decade of synchronized skating competitions, influencing my personal and professional growth in significant ways.

Perhaps the most powerful lesson skating taught me was the value of failure. In figure skating, one often falls repeatedly before landing a jump successfully. This experience ingrained in me the understanding that failure is a natural part of any process. Embracing failure as a stepping stone to success has been instrumental in my journey. True achievement comes from the courage to fail and keep going.

-Paige Dimakos

How do you navigate the demands of work, life, and family?

I’m not sure true balance ever exists—some weeks, work takes priority, and other times, family does. What helps me most is embracing  flexibility and letting go of the pressure to have it all perfectly aligned.

I do my best to be present for school events or volunteer opportunities because I know those days are fleeting. But as a working mom, I miss things—and the mom guilt is real. I’ve learned to prepare my kids ahead of time for what I’ll miss and lean on my village to fill in the gaps.

I also remind them that my patients and staff count on me, and that I truly love what I do. I want them to see that it’s okay—and important—to pursue what you’ve worked hard for and enjoy.

My advice? Set priorities, communicate clearly, and be intentional with your time. Presence and purpose goes a long way.

-Dr. Danielle Masserman

What do you hope to be remembered for?

That I lived boldly and authentically—never afraid to stand out, even when it meant going against the grain. Whether in life or in business, I’ve always believed in the power of staying true to who you are.

Mill & Habs was born from that same belief—a desire to create something timeless, meaningful, and unapologetically original. But beyond the brand, my deepest hope is to leave a legacy rooted in love, courage, and intention.

The idea of living intentionally has also shifted how I define success. It used to be about hustle—how much I could accomplish, how many hours I could work, how far I could push myself. But over time, success has come to look more like balance, alignment, and peace.

I still have big goals and a drive to build something lasting— but now I understand that those achievements only matter if I’m well enough to enjoy them. Setting boundaries, learning to say no, choosing rest without guilt—those are wins, too.

What helps you manage work and family?

Balancing it all didn’t come naturally to me—it’s something I struggled with until I became a mom. Now, I try to set firm boundaries, like having a hard stop to emails, meetings, and events after 4PM. My husband and I prioritize eating dinner as a family. I know that’s not always realistic for everyone, so I often recommend meal services- they’ve helped boost my confidence in the kitchen.

Of course, working in event planning means I can’t always be home at night. When that happens, I make up for it with one-on-one time with my son the next morning or over the weekend. I’ve also learned the power of saying no.

My advice? Don’t be afraid to protect your time—you can still be that rockstar mom and get the job done.

What was the most pivotal moment in your career?

It came after 18 years of photographing people when I realized there was so much more to see and share on this earth. I took a life-changing safari trip to Africa, and the experience shook me to my core. Seeing the world through a new lens, quite literally, transformed the way I viewed photography. That’s when I took a major leap and added a new branch to my creative tree: landscape and wildlife photography.

It was a big risk, but I kept hearing my mom’s advice in the back of my mind:  “Leap, and the net will appear.” That tile she gave me 20 years ago still sits in my studio. That leap taught me to trust my vision and quiet the noise of doubt and naysayers.

Was there a time you took a big risk that changed everything?

Yes, in 2021, I helped my husband open our Scottsdale clinic, Integrated Spine, Pain & Wellness.

Business felt familiar thanks to my family’s entrepreneurial spirit—but healthcare was uncharted territory. Thankfully, we had great guidance.

Opening the practice pulled us from our comfort zone and into something much bigger than ourselves. When you’re running a business, you’re uncomfortable every single day. You’re constantly solving one problem, only to uncover the next. But that discomfort stretched us.

We started on one path and ended up on an entirely different one—one that’s more aligned with who we truly are and how we want to serve our community. It revealed our values, our purpose, and what kind of life we want to build. This journey has also shaped us as a couple. Working together isn’t always easy, but it’s taught us how to communicate better, respect each other more deeply, and grow stronger as partners—in business and in life.

I’ve learned the power of knowing exactly what I want—and not being afraid to say it out loud. And on the tough days— the ones where I feel exhausted or stuck—I turn to a podcast or a story about someone who’s overcome their own challenges.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve learned from your profession?

My #1 piece of advice for women is to give yourself the gift of proper bioidentical hormone replacement—when the time is right. We often think hormones are only tied to periods, fertility, or libido, but they impact  every major system in the body. Mood swings, frequent illness, fatigue, even changes in heart health—all can be hormone-related.

As we enter perimenopause and menopause, hormone levels naturally decline. Having them tested (ideally with a 24-hour urine test) and replaced by an experienced doctor can be life-changing. I’ve watched both my patients and myself age backwards—feeling more energized, balanced, and yes, even frisky.

-Dr. Sharon Stills

What have you learned about yourself through motherhood?

Motherhood has taught me that strength isn’t always about pushing forward—it’s also about knowing when to pause, be present, and choose differently. I was incredibly careerdriven, even after becoming a mom. When my daughter was born in the ‘90s, I was already anchoring the news in Phoenix. I soon left for Los Angeles, where I continued evolving in TV. Five years later, I returned to Phoenix with a newborn son and became the first Latina in nearly two decades to anchor the main newscasts.

Those years brought some of the greatest professional highs—and some of the hardest personal lows. After my divorce, I juggled single motherhood with a demanding career. I made mistakes I still regret. But one choice I’ll never regret is walking away from traditional news after my ex-husband passed away. Helping my children navigate that loss made it crystal clear where I needed to be: with them, fully present, in a way I hadn’t always been before.

The decade since has been the most fulfilling of my life as a mother. My children have become grounded adults because of that choice—and I’ve grown alongside them. I now engage with my TV career in a way that honors my priorities and my peace. Motherhood didn’t just shape me—it redefined what success means to me.

What’s one thing you hope to pass down to the next generation of women?

Many years ago, I joined a 200-hour yoga teacher training just for fun. During that time, my mentor shared a simple but powerful phrase: “Do what you do, don’t do what you don’t do.”

In honor of the generations of strong women who came before me—and those still to come—I find deep wisdom in those words. As women, we often spend our lives comparing, competing, trying to prove ourselves—not just to others, but to ourselves. We lose sight of who we are, shapeshifting into who we think we should be, only to (hopefully) return to our true selves later in life.

What I want future generations of women to know is this: trust yourself. Be still. Sit with the silence. There is beauty all around you— don’t let distractions pull you away from what truly matters. Your presence is your power.

What motivates you to keep pushing forward?

As a mother of three, I want to be an example—to show them that dreams are worth chasing, and that with faith, grit, and perseverance, they can absolutely come true. I want them to see that hard work leads to results, and that even when it feels tough, showing up still matters.

My clients also fuel my drive. I believe the talents I’ve been given aren’t just for me—they’re meant to be shared. I find so much purpose in creating spaces where people live, laugh, thrive, and make memories. The idea that I’m designing the backdrop to someone’s family photos, holiday mornings, or quiet evening conversations—it’s not lost on me.

What’s the biggest leap you’ve ever taken?

About nine years ago, I took a leap of faith and got my real estate license after spending eight years building a career as a hairstylist—something I truly loved. But when my body could no longer keep up with the physical demands, I had to let that chapter go.

Real estate became my second passion—a space where I could still connect with people, be creative, and make a difference. It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

At the end of the day, I’d want to be remembered for my ability to connect with anyone in the room and for having a big heart. Whether it’s through a conversation or a small gesture, I hope people feel seen and valued when they’re around me. Genuine connection and kindness go a long way—and that’s the legacy I hope to leave.

Philanthropy has played a significant role in both of your lives. As a mother-daughter duo, what first inspired you to give back?

Sandy (mom): Giving back has always been part of who I am. I was raised in a home where community involvement was the norm, not the exception. As my daughters were growing up, my husband and I made sure they saw that firsthand. Whether it was supporting the Heart Ball or volunteering with the Visiting Nurses, we brought them along whenever we could. One of my most meaningful experiences was chairing the Heart Ball in 2004—one of Phoenix’s largest and longest-running philanthropic events. I’m especially proud that Kristine later followed in my footsteps. At five, Kristine watched her grandfather undergo a tri ple bypass and her grandmother suffer strokes—making heart health deeply per sonal, not just a cause.

Kristine (daughter): Growing up, giving back was simply a way of life. We didn’t see it as volunteering—we just did it. I remember watching my mom pour herself into causes she cared deeply about and always following through on her commitments. Some of my earliest memories are tied to charitable events, especially the Heart Ball. As a child, it felt like such a glamorous night, but as I got older, I came to understand its true purpose—and why it meant so much to my mom. Chairing the Heart Ball in 2019, just as she did in 2004, was one of the greatest honors of my life.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE Movement

COLEY ARNOLD ON BUILDING FOUNDRESS, BETTING ON YOURSELF, AND WHY WOMEN NEED TO STOP WAITING FOR PERMISSION

Coley Arnold didn’t just stumble into entrepreneurship—she built it from the ground up, without a business degree, without a roadmap, and without waiting for permission. She co-founded Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market, which grew into a massive multi-city event, and later expanded with The Vintage Arcadia.

After a decade of building and learning the hard way, Coley saw a problem: women in business lacked real community. So she built one.

As the founder of Foundress, she’s helping women turn selfdoubt into confidence, grow unapologetically, and succeed without needing to have it all together.

Here, she shares her journey—from solo hustle to launching a movement that empowers women to own their power.

“Give more than you take. Instead of thinking, What can I get from this person? ask, How can I help them? Relationships—not transactions—build businesses.”

What inspired you to start Foundress?

Honestly? Frustration. When I was growing Junk in the Trunk , I was learning everything through trial and error. I didn’t have a background in business, and I didn’t even know who to ask for help.

Networking events felt impersonal—just business cards, no real connection. I craved a space where women truly supported each other.

The moment I knew Foundress needed to exist was when three different women reached out asking to grab coffee and pick my brain. I don’t usually say yes to those requests—I have four boys and was running multiple businesses at the time—but something nudged me to go.

I sat with each of them, listened to their dreams, and at the end, they all said, Thank you for giving me permission. That hit me. They didn’t need advice— they needed someone to tell them it was okay to go after what they wanted. I left those meetings and thought, Women don’t need permission. They need a community that empowers them to give it to themselves. That’s when I knew I had to create Foundress.

Before Foundress, what was your career like?

I co-founded Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market in 2011, and it took off faster than we knew how to handle. It started as a small backyard market and grew into one of the biggest vintage markets in the Southwest, with thousands of shoppers, vendors, and a die-hard following.

Back then, social media was the wild west, and we grew our brand to over 100K followers before Instagram’s algorithm became pay-to-play. We figured out marketing, community-building, and scaling a business the hard way—by doing it.

Then, in 2020, I opened The Vintage Arcadia , a retail, restaurant, and event space. And guess what? A global pandemic wasn’t in the business plan. I had to learn how to pivot fast to survive. That experience taught me resilience, problem-solving, and how to lead through uncertainty—skills I use daily in building Foundress

What was the biggest challenge in launching Foundress?

Stepping out on my own. I sold my other businesses in 2024, which meant I was starting from scratch. There was no safety net, no built-in brand awareness. The hardest part was trusting myself. I had to learn that no one was coming to save me. If I wanted this to succeed, I had to bet on myself every single day.

How has Foundress evolved?

At first, I created it for me—I needed a space where I could connect with other women and grow my own business. But then I saw just how much women needed this.

Foundress is more than networking—it’s a business accelerator, mastermind, and sisterhood. Women gain strategy, support, and the confidence to own their worth and lead boldly.

What’s a common misconception about starting a business?

That you have to have it all figured out. Spoiler alert: no one does.

The most common emotion in business is imposter syndrome. If you’re feeling it, that means you’re growing.

What’s the #1 mistake female entrepreneurs make?

Trying to do it alone. Women thrive in community. Ask for help.

Time management is always a struggle—what’s your approach?

Manage yourself. If you can’t lead yourself, you shouldn’t lead a business.

How do you handle self-doubt?

I expect it. If I’m not feeling self-doubt, that means I’m not pushing myself hard enough.

What’s the key to building real connections?

Give more than you take. Instead of thinking, What can I get from this person? ask, How can I help them? Relationships—not transactions—build businesses.

Advice for women struggling to stand out in their industry?

Stop trying to be better than everyone. Be different. Do things your way, and the right people will find you.

How can women advocate for themselves?

Set boundaries. Have a “friends & family” discount that you control, so you don’t feel pressured to give away your work for free.

What’s one unconventional tip that’s helped you in business?

Tits up, you’ve got this. At the end of the day, confidence is everything.

Beyond Beauty

The

In a trend-heavy skincare world, Arcadia plastic surgeon Dr. Randy Craft offers something real. FACE by Dr. Craft is a performance-driven line rooted in surgical precision and clinical science—treating skin as a living organ, not a trend.

“I created FACE to bridge the gap between luxury skincare and clinical results,” says Dr. Craft. Dr. Craft didn’t start with trends—he started with a question: “What do you think about K-Beauty?” That sparked a two-year dive into what patients really wanted, resulting in two lines that fuse Korean skincare with pharmaceutical-grade science.

A DUAL PHILOSOPHY: EAST MEETS WEST

FACE by Dr. Craft operates on two clinically driven foundations:

• Pharmaceutical Line: Developed to meet the stringent standards of prescription-grade products. Every ingredient is backed by peer-reviewed science and formulated to improve skin at a cellular level—ideal before, during, and after professional treatments.

• K-Beauty Capsule Collection: Made 100% in South Korea in collaboration with top manufacturers. These formulas prioritize hydration, calm inflammation, and restore barrier health with fermented botanicals, marine actives, and time-tested traditions.

INGREDIENTS WITH INTENTION: WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND WHY

Every product in FACE by Dr. Craft is built around clinically proven ingredients—chosen for performance, not hype. According to the double board-certified, Harvard-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon, these are essentials that deliver real results.

• ProteXidine™: A patented molecule that helps block UV-induced DNA damage. Developed by the University of Minnesota, it protects against fine lines and pigmentation at the cellular level.

• All-Trans Retinol: The most bioavailable form of retinol, meaning faster and more effective results with less irritation. Paired with bakuchiol and calming botanicals like licorice and green tea for balance.

• Centella Asiatica, Abalone, Niacinamide: Core ingredients in the K-Beauty line. These address inflammation, pigmentation, and barrier repair without clogging or sensitizing skin.

Clinical Science of FACE by Dr. Craft
Dr. Randy Craft

• Peptides + Growth Factors: These signal the skin to rebuild collagen and elastin. Especially beneficial post-procedure or for aging, thinning skin.

• Antioxidants (Vitamin C, CoQ10, Green Tea, Resveratrol): Essential in any age-defying regimen. They fight oxidative stress and boost glow.

CLINICALLY CLEAN, CLINICALLY PROVEN

Dr. Craft says his line cuts through with high-performance, science-backed simplicity—pharmaceutical-grade products where every ingredient serves a purpose.

“FACE was built for women who want to understand what they’re putting on their skin—and why it works,” says Dr. Craft. Whether you’re preventing in your 20s or recovering in your 50s, this line meets your skin’s needs and moves it forward.

Heart of the Hive

Busy Bees isn’t your average babysitting service. Built on intention, trust, and genuine connection, this fast-growing childcare network is changing the way families find care— and how caregivers find purpose. At the center of it are founders Amanda and Katrina whose shared vision of thoughtful, relationship-based childcare has quietly sparked a movement. What began as a few local babysitting connections in Phoenix has evolved into a trusted platform serving thousands of families across multiple cities.

MEET THE QUEEN BEES OF BUSY BEES

Amanda + Katrina

Before Busy Bees, Amanda, who was born and raised in Arcadia, was already a connector. Through her years mentoring high school students in Arcadia Young Life, she found herself naturally matching young sitters with friends and families in need of childcare.

Meanwhile, Katrina was nannying for a high-profile family while pursuing her graduate degree in Business Leadership. When her cousin—one of Amanda’s first Bees sitters—suggested they meet, something just clicked.

“We were wired the same way,” Amanda  recalls. “Relationship-driven, service-minded, and ready to build something that actually helped people.”

Their first real highlight came on May 13, the day they launched their online booking platform with a small, fiesta-themed event for local Arcadia friends and family. A year later, the team hosted their first “Bee-day” celebration—and realized the launch date was also Katrina’s birthday. A simple coincidence? Maybe. But for Amanda and Katrina, it felt like confirmation that they were building something together and meant to last.

“A process that began with Excel spreadsheets, group texts, and manual payments eventually evolved into a custom app that now supports thousands of bookings each week,” says Katrina.

Every part of Busy Bees’ journey has been about thoughtful growth—never chasing trends or cutting corners, but instead, listening sincerely to the needs of the families, Bees and the entire network.

Today, Busy Bees partners with over 3,000 sitters across three states and supports more than 1,500 families every week. In a country where the average family spends upwards of $10,000 annually on childcare—and nearly half still struggle to find dependable help when they need it—Busy Bees has quickly become a trusted solution.

“Even in the earliest days, it was never just about growth. At every step, we prioritized safety, fun, and meaningful connections,” Amanda says.

From the start, safety, character, and compatibility have been non-negotiables. Every Bee must pass a background check, complete CPR certification, and be personally interviewed. Most are referred through trusted community connections, and families must also provide references or referrals to join. No one can simply “sign up.”

The result? A community of Bees and families who trust each other. And that trust has ripple effects.

One mother, recently widowed, shared how having consistent, kind male Bees in her home helped her sons through a season of grief. Others have shared stories of Bees who became like family, invited to graduations, holidays and birthdays. In some cases, Hive kids have served as flower girls or ring bearers in their Bees’ weddings. And then there are the full-circle moments—like the 16-year-old who recently applied to become a Bee, explaining, “Busy Bees used to babysit me.”

CONTINUED >

“A PROCESS THAT BEGAN WITH SPREADSHEETS, GROUP TEXTS, AND MANUAL PAYMENTS EVENTUALLY EVOLVED INTO A CUSTOM APP THAT NOW SUPPORTS THOUSANDS OF BOOKINGS EACH WEEK.”

“Her choice to say ‘Busy Bee’ rather than ‘babysitter’ showed she saw being a Bee as something more—and she wanted to step into that same legacy herself,” says Katrina.

Amanda and Katrina didn’t set out to build a childcare empire. They set out to serve their community. That mindset continues to shape every decision.

Amanda, now a mom herself, has navigated the same challenges many of her clients experience. She’s even booked Bees for her own daughter, underscoring her belief in the platform’s quality and safety.

Reflecting on their journey, the founders emphasize the value of staying anchored to your “why.”

“There will always be challenges, but if you’re rooted in purpose—if you know who you’re serving and why—you’ll find your way forward,” says Katrina.

They also credit their growth to being willing to learn on the go. As one mentor told them early on: “Make ten decisions. Eight might be wrong. Keep moving.”

As for what’s next… the “Hive” is expanding. After launching successfully in Phoenix, San Diego, and Boise, Busy Bees is preparing to open its fourth and fifth markets. Long term, Amanda and Katrina envision reaching 10 to 15 carefully selected cities—places where connection-driven childcare can take root and flourish.

“We want to be the trusted service parents just know —one they’re proud of and consider part of their extended family,” says Amanda.

Elevating Women’s Wellness at Every Age

A Guide to Health & Longevity

At Benessair Health, a premier wellness and longevity facility, Dr. Linda Eller, DO, is redefining proactive, science-backed healthcare—empowering women to optimize their health at every stage of life.

“Women’s health is often reduced to yearly check-ups and reactionary medicine. We need to shift the conversation to long-term optimization—keeping women strong, mobile, and thriving well into their later years,” says Dr. Eller.

For Dr. Eller, the mission isn’t just about treating symptoms—it’s about preventing health issues before they arise, ensuring vitality, strength, and longevity through cutting-edge therapies and a highly personalized approach to care.

“Women’s health isn’t a trend— it’s a lifelong commitment.”

Dr. Eller is an osteopathic physician and one of the few in the area integrating functional medicine into concierge care—offering both in one comprehensive, root-cause-focused practice.

“I value assessing structure, function, lifestyle, and even mindset—not just diagnosing and prescribing,” she says.

One of Dr. Eller’s biggest frustrations? Women only focus on health when they hit a milestone—or when something goes wrong.

“Women’s health isn’t a trend—it’s a lifelong commitment. You deserve more than a quick exam—you deserve full-body care and lasting strength.”

Dr. Eller outlines what every woman should be focusing on:

30S: STRENGTH, HORMONES, AND FERTILITY

Metabolism slows 1–2% per decade, fertility declines after 32, and injury risk rises in your 30s. Without strength training, women begin losing muscle—key for metabolism, injury prevention, and long-term health.

Photobiomodulation (PBM)

Key priorities include strength training for muscle and bone health and monitoring thyroid, reproductive, and cortisol levels.

40S: METABOLISM, PERIMENOPAUSE, AND ENERGY MANAGEMENT

Estrogen levels can drop by 50 percent, increasing insulin resistance and inflammation. These changes impact weight, mood, and long-term health.

Key priorities include managing blood sugar, strengthening the core and pelvic floor, and addressing perimenopause symptoms affecting 75% of women.

50S: MENOPAUSE, BONE HEALTH, AND COGNITIVE FUNCTION

After menopause, osteoporosis risk triples, heart disease becomes the leading cause of death, and women develop Alzheimer’s at twice the rate of men.

Key priorities include resistance training to prevent muscle loss and fractures, along with regular heart screenings since cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women.

60S AND BEYOND: MOBILITY, INDEPENDENCE, AND LONGEVITY

One in three women over 65 falls each year, and strength declines by 15 percent per decade, impacting independence and quality of life.

Key priorities include fall prevention and balance training, neurological support for memory, and regular heart screenings—1 in 5 women develop heart disease.

At Benessair Health, Dr. Eller and her team take a full-body, one-stop approach to wellness offering an array of services: Photobiomodulation (PBM) uses red light for collagen repair, green for focus, and blue to reduce inflammation and boost immunity.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) enhances healing, circulation, and brain performance by delivering pure oxygen under pressure.

Strength Training programs support bone density, balance, and long-term mobility.

IV Therapy delivers nutrients directly to the bloodstream for quick boosts in energy, hydration, immunity, and hormone balance.

From bacteria to chemical breakdown, Pool Birdie exposes the hidden dangers of neglected water—and how to fix them

WHAT’S REALLY IN YOUR POOL?

May is Water Safety Awareness Month—and in Arizona, that means more than floaties, fences, and supervision. While preventing drowning is (rightfully) the top priority, there’s another layer of safety that often goes unnoticed: the quality of the water itself.

“Safe swimming means safe water,” says Bryan Nisbet, Co-Founder and Master Technician at Pool Birdie, a Scottsdale-based company redefining residential pool care. “Without weekly testing and proper balancing, pools can harbor contaminants that pose serious health risks—rashes, infections, or worse.”

Water safety isn’t just about who’s in the pool—it’s about what’s in the pool.

According to Bryan and the Pool Birdie team, many of the Valley’s residential pools fail to meet even basic safety standards—especially once the summer heat sets in. Arizona’s intense UV exposure and rising water temperatures accelerate chemical breakdown and bacteria growth, meaning what worked in March won’t cut it in July.

Pool Birdie Leadership Team

“By August, the chemical demand on your pool doubles,” explains Bryan. “You’re battling evaporation, dust from monsoons, and constant use by kids, pets, and guests. It’s when most pool systems fail—and when issues become expensive.”

That’s why Pool Birdie uses a chemical balancing method rooted in the Saturation Index, a scientific formula that evaluates a pool’s overall health—not just its pH.

“We’re not just dumping chlorine in and leaving. We give homeowners a full chemical breakdown every visit and work to keep their system energy-efficient and safe year-round.”

For Pool Birdie founders Keenan and Nikki Murphy, who live and raise their family in Arcadia, starting the company wasn’t just a business decision—it was a personal one.

“We were the typical homeowners—struggling to find a reliable pool service that didn’t cut corners,” says Keenan.

So, what’s really floating around in a seemingly clean pool?

• Chloramines: Formed from chlorine mixing with sweat, oils, or urine—can irritate eyes and lungs.

• Cyanobacteria: Can cause rashes, illness, and liver damage.

• Cryptosporidium: Chlorine-resistant parasite behind most pool-borne illnesses.

• Excess stabilizer: Reduces chlorine effectiveness and can damage pool surfaces. “Stabilizer levels should never be ignored,” warns Bryan. “It’s one of the main reasons people can’t keep their water balanced—and it can degrade your system over time.”

THE #1 MISTAKE HOMEOWNERS MAKE

Neglecting filter maintenance. “Your filter is like your pool’s liver,” Bryan says. “If you’re not cleaning it properly, everything else you’re doing is pointless.” Filters should be professionally cleaned every 4–6 months depending on usage and regularly inspected during weekly service.

FROM COLD PLUNGES TO AUTOMATION

Pool Birdie technicians also manage everything from steam rooms and cold plunges to automation and full equipment upgrades. They’re big proponents of salt systems, which produce daily chlorine and require less frequent draining.

“JUST BECAUSE YOUR POOL LOOKS CLEAR DOESN’T

“We’re seeing a shift toward smart pools,” says Bryan. “Homeowners want to manage everything from their phone—but even with automation, you still need expert oversight.”

MONSOON SEASON—ARE YOU READY?

Late June through August is notoriously tough on pools. Heavy rain, wind-blown debris, and sudden pressure drops wreak havoc on water chemistry and filtration.

“If you’re not increasing filtration time or adjusting chemical levels after a storm, your pool is almost guaranteed to go off balance,” Bryan says. “And algae blooms can happen overnight.”

IT’S NOT JUST A POOL—IT’S PART OF YOUR HEALTH

“A lot of people see the pool as just entertainment,” Bryan adds. “But in Arizona, it’s part of your wellness routine. It’s where you de-stress, move your body, host guests—it should be as clean and cared for as your kitchen.”

With an employee-first culture, a strict technician vetting process, and a flat monthly fee (no surprise summer charges), Pool Birdie is redefining what it means to truly own a pool in Arizona.

“Don’t be afraid to ask who’s in your backyard,” Bryan says. “You deserve to know your technician, trust them, and rely on them.”

Sabbatical to Sisterhood

THE MIND OF KNOW

When Sarah Benken moved to Arizona without a network, she didn’t expect to spark a nationwide movement. What began as a personal sabbatical became The KNOW Women—a multi-city platform connecting purpose-driven women across industries.

Now, with the launch of KNOW Phoenix Volume 8, Sarah reflects on the power of connection, the lessons behind bold growth, and what it truly means to be KNOW-worthy.

WHAT MOMENT SPARKED THE IDEA THAT LED TO THE KNOW WOMEN?

I felt stuck. I had built a successful business but found myself in a rut—bored, unfulfilled, and craving something different. I took a yearlong sabbatical to serve the community and figure things out. That time changed everything.

HOW DID YOU TURN ISOLATION INTO A THRIVING PLATFORM FOR WOMEN AFTER MOVING TO ARIZONA?

I was lonely at first. I had my husband and kids, but no friends, no tribe. So I threw myself into everything—tech meetups, nonprofit committees, women’s groups, garden clubs—you name it. I said yes to every room until I found my people.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE MOMENT YOU REALIZED KNOW WAS BECOMING A MOVEMENT?

Absolutely. Volume 1 of KNOW Phoenix changed everything. After interviewing 60+ women, I kept hearing the same struggles— lack of time, connection, and visibility. After launch, the response was overwhelming. That’s when I knew we were onto something.

WHAT’S A STANDOUT KNOW MOMENT THAT REMINDS YOU WHY THIS WORK MATTERS?

There are so many! Women have found best friends, investors, and business partners. One of my favorite moments is always our annual Summit, where the biggest connections happen.

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR BIGGEST ENTREPRENEURIAL LESSON?

I moved too fast. We launched in new markets without fully vetting sustainability. When COVID hit, I had to step back and centralize operations. It taught me to trust my intuition and grow with intention—not just excitement.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF, AND HOW DID IT SHAPE YOUR LEADERSHIP?

2020 was the hardest year of my career. We were navigating a pandemic... and I lost my dad. I learned that leadership requires showing up, even when it’s hard. I stepped out from behind the scenes and led with values, empathy, and conviction.

WHAT DID THE EARLY KNOW GRIND LOOK LIKE?

I juggled another national business while managing KNOW on an Excel sheet—lots of calls, research, and vision. It was simple but purposeful. Things took off after our first book launch and we expanded to multiple markets.

WHO WAS THE FIRST WOMAN WHO TRULY LIFTED YOU?

My mom told me I could do anything, saw me through every mistake, and showed me the meaning of unconditional support. I get my fire from her.

IF YOU COULD SPEAK TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF, WHAT WOULD YOU TELL HER?

“Don’t worry—it all works out. You’ll get the guy, the success, and your own version of the white picket fence. But keep grinding like there’s no time like today.”

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE KNOW-WORTHY?

KNOW-worthy women are driven, authentic, and committed to doing good. It’s not just about success—it’s about impact, intention, and a heart for community.

DEAR FELLOW EMPTY-NESTERS...

Longtime TV News Anchor Kathleen Bade goes from Empty Nesting to Empty Zesting

After 31 years on the desk, I signed off as a TV news anchor on July 31st, 2024.

The next morning, I was on a plane to Poland to get on my inner “Swiftie” with my daughter for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Seemed like the perfect way to launch into my own new era even if I still don’t know quite what that is.

What I do know, is that the time between getting your kids off to college and retirement should be called the other “wonder years.” It’s just as awkward in many ways. You feel a bit unsteady, uncertain of where you’re going, what your purpose is, even your identity and how you’ll fill all that time you devoted to them.

For me, when my first born went to college, I was confused as to how I could feel so sucker-punched by his absence. We had all worked so hard to help him achieve his dream of playing college baseball. I was there for every game, victory, loss, streak, strike and step. I saw it all coming. His goal was our goal. So when it came time to drop him off at college how could I feel so unprepared? I’ll never forget taking off on the flight home, it felt so unnatural leaving my child behind. It went against every protective instinct I have as a mom. There was just no easing into it.

For the next year I felt like a bruise. I wasn’t unhappy, but I was tender and not quite myself. I still had a child at home so I felt guilty complaining about my sense of loss and internalized a lot. They say sprains can take longer to heal than fractures, so it kinda makes sense my soft tissue needed some time. It was a different sensation when my youngest and last left home. You’re more confident because you’re a hardened veteran now or so you think.

When we left our daughter’s dorm my husband put in a playlist he made for the long ride home. It began with Chris Stapleton’s “Starting Over.” We held hands and cried silently together for a solid hour. It was just so hard to believe that this beautiful family we built and all the chaos that went with it was literally in our rearview mirror.

There are very few pages in the chapters of our lives that turn so abruptly. It takes time to process and is one as well. I find the key is to lean into it because the reality is you have no other choice. It’s a new season of your life – a beginning, not just an ending.

May is a time to celebrate moms and graduates, so why not celebrate all the moms out there graduating to the next level: becoming empty nesters. Because who wants to go quietly into the night. We want to light up the other parts of ourselves we’ve put on hold while raising others. To steal a line from Taylor Swift: “I haven’t met the new me yet.” It’s from her hit song “Happiness,” something I’m betting on and you can too. I think (hope) I’ve unlocked the key and I call it “empty zesting.” Stay tuned.
