As a mom of three boys, I’m beyond grateful to connect with people who my kids admire, idolize, and strive to be like. From Gonzo to Randy, Fitz to Merril—this issue is packed with men I’m proud for my boys to look up to. These are guys who lead with grit, tenacity, and resilience. But more than that, they give back. They value community. They stay grounded—and model the kind of character we hope to see in the next generation.
Formulating this issue was a true joy. From entertainment to education, insight to inspiration—we cover it all. I can’t wait to find it in my own mailbox so my boys can read it cover to cover (yes, it counts toward their school reading minutes!).
As June marks our Men’s Issue, I’m especially grateful to live in a community filled with strong male role models—from pro athletes to executives and everything in between. Thank you for showing up with strength, kindness, and positivity. You’re making a difference.
I also want to take a moment to thank the men in my kids’ lives—the coaches, teachers, family friends, and even professional athletes—who have taken time to make them feel seen, encouraged, and loved. Whether it’s a high five after a game or a simple word of affirmation, those moments matter more than you know.
Our City Scene section features highlights from the Childhelp Wings Fashion Show & Luncheon, which I was honored to emcee. Over 50 kids took to the runway, reminding us of the joy, hope, and healing power of love. With every step, we celebrated more than style—we celebrated innocence, confidence, and the limitless potential every child deserves.
With Father’s Day around the corner, I want to send a heartfelt shoutout to all the dads doing it all—working hard, showing up, leading by example. To the fathers teaching our boys how to be men—and our girls how to be treated—you are appreciated. Some of my favorite moments are from the bleachers, watching my husband coach our boys in baseball. As moms, we carry a lot—but so do our guys. And to my husband, who reads these often-too-honest letters and supports my transparency regardless—thank you for being the best dad and partner.
Happy Father’s Day. I hope you enjoy this issue.

Derrick Hall is celebrating 20 years with the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading the team with heart, vision, and relentless drive. Luis “Gonzo” Gonzalez—forever etched in franchise history—remains a daily presence and hometown hero. We caught up with both for a candid chat on D-backs memories, clubhouse vibes, and community pride.
Q: WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT OUR 2025 D-BACKS TEAM?
Gonzo: “They have fun, but when it’s game time, they lock in. I’m pumped about Josh Naylor at first. And Corbin Carroll—I’m sure he’ll stay hot. Perdomo’s locked in. We also picked up Corbin Burns, a top pitcher. It’s an exciting group.”
Hall: “Corbin Burns—one of the best pitchers in baseball. I’m also excited to see Corbin Carroll’s resurgence. That second half last year was amazing, and spring was great. Our team respects each other, the game, and the community.”
Q: HOW’S LIFE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GAME?
Gonzo: “I love it. Playing, you’re focused on your own performance. Now, I’ve learned about the business, community, everything. I retired in ’08 and started working here in ’09. I’ve loved every second.”
Q: WHAT ARE YOU HOPING FOR THIS SEASON?
Hall: “That we’re playing in October. Last year, we had a better regular season than the one before when we went to the World Series—but didn’t make the playoffs. I’d be disappointed again if we don’t get there. I love this team. I hope they perform the way we know they can. I cried in my hotel room after we made it back to the World Series in 2023. It meant so much—to the players, their families, everyone. We flew all our employees to Texas for the World Series. That was powerful. The culture we’ve built—it lives in the clubhouse now, too.”
Q: WHO WERE YOUR IDOLS GROWING UP?
Gonzo: “Pete Rose. But really, it was the women in my life—my mom, my grandmother, my aunt. My parents divorced before college, and they held everything together. Later, my college coach became a father figure.”
Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE STADIUM TO PLAY IN?
Gonzo: “Wrigley, Fenway, old Yankee Stadium—I love the classics. And I loved being the villain in opposing parks. When fans brought signs saying they hated me? That’s when I knew I was doing something right.”
Q: WHAT’S IT LIKE HAVING LEGENDS LIKE GONZO AND RANDY JOHNSON IN THE BUILDING?
Hall: “It’s awesome. They’re part of our history. Gonzo, J.J. Putz, Orlando Hudson, Miguel Montero—they’re learning the business side now. Gonzo’s one of my best friends. He’s here every single day.”
Q: WHAT DO YOU TWO DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT CHASE FIELD?
Hall: “We travel, dine out, and support each other’s families. It’s a great friendship.”
Q: DO YOU EVER WEAR YOUR OWN JERSEY?
Gonzo: (laughing) “Sometimes I’ll say, ‘Nice jersey!’ to someone wearing mine. Most don’t even realize it’s me. My kids think it’s hilarious.”
Q: WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR LEGACY TO BE?
Gonzo: “Not just the World Series or the walk-off hit. I want to be remembered for how I treat people. I knew I wouldn’t play forever. Now, it’s about giving back—being involved with fans, charities, the community.”
Q: TALK ABOUT YOUR WALK-UP SONG.
Gonzo: “‘Heavy’ by Collective Soul when I played. Now? Probably something old-school.”
Hall: “If I had a walk-up song, it would be ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire.”
Q: WHAT FAN EXPERIENCES ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS THIS SEASON CONTINUES?
Hall: “Postgame fireworks! We can open the roof again… a huge celebration of Chase Field. Plus, there are many great giveaways— replica jerseys, bobbleheads, and more.”
Q: WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO MEAL AT CHASE FIELD?
Gonzo: “The meatballs. I’m kind of a plain Jane when it comes to food. But when I was playing? I was a big McDonald’s guy— yeah, I know! Everyone was shocked. I’d eat that before games. But I worked out a lot and stayed consistent. Never had many injuries, just a few shoulder issues.”
Hall: “There’s so much to choose from. I’d probably go with the new kids’ items up at Sandlot Snacks—Mac and Cheese Bites and Little Corn Dog Nuggets. Not the healthiest, but so good! And everyone’s raving about that massive 20-inch sub— half meatball, half chicken parm”
Q: DO YOU HAVE ANOTHER 20 YEARS IN YOU?
Gonzo: (smiling) “Oh yeah. I’m a lifer.”
Hall: “Absolutely.”

“Photography keeps me out of trouble,” Randy Johnson says with a grin, surrounded by his own work now hanging inside the Arizona Diamondbacks Hall of Fame and Museum at Chase Field. “It keeps me occupied. It keeps my mind going. And I get to share it.”
Tucked away on the main concourse in right field, the Arizona Diamondbacks Hall of Fame and History Museum is one of Chase Field’s true hidden gems—a walk through of the team’s legacy filled with artifacts, memorabilia, iconic photography, and esteemed accolades. Think Cy Young awards, The Commissioner’s Trophy, and game-used bases. If you have a ticket to the game, you can access it—and now #51’s latest chapter is also on display.
Long before he was a World Series MVP, Randy Johnson was studying photojournalism at USC, developing his own film and covering campus events for the college newspaper. “People think I picked up a camera after baseball. I didn’t,” he says. “I just had to put it aside when I was drafted.”
The Randy Johnson Photo Experience—his new exhibit installed inside the Hall of Fame Museum—marks another milestone in a lifelong passion that’s taken him around the world. His latest coffee table book, a collection of over 100 images from six trips to Africa, captures everything from wild safaris to quiet landscapes.
CONTINUED >
“I recently visited Japan,” Johnson says. “I love documenting where I go. If it inspires people to travel or experience the world differently, that’s the best part.”
The idea of seeing his work on full display started in Cooperstown. “Normally I just see these little thumbnails on my computer. Seeing them full-sized—and hearing how it moved people—made me want to do more.”
Photography, like baseball, demands commitment. “If you want good photos, you’ve got to get up early,” he says. “That shot of the Colosseum? I was there at 5 AM. And there were already 20 photographers waiting for the sun.”
The discipline, the research, the patience—it’s all familiar. “I gave everything I had to baseball,” he says. “Now, this is what I give my time to.”
This exhibit inside Chase Field offers fans a rare chance to experience another side of Randy —one they might not have seen during his days dominating the mound. “It’s probably a lot more pleasant to be around me now,” he jokes. “You didn’t want to come talk to me during a game. But here, kids wearing my jersey can see a different side.”
Among the photos is one of Pike Place Market, a memory from his early days living in Seattle—captured on film back in 1991. “The fact that I still had that negative,” he says, “means a lot. I wish I had more from my college days. You don’t realize how special it is until you look back.”
The Randy Johnson Photo Experience is personal—not just a gallery, but a window into a life lived beyond baseball.
“My favorite photo?” he shrugs. “It’s always the next one I haven’t taken yet.”
Even after a Hall of Fame career, Randy isn’t interested in standing still. “I’m grateful for what baseball gave me,” he says. “But I’m not stuck there. I want to keep moving, keep seeing new places, keep sharing it.”
When asked what’s next, he smiles. “No big plan,” he says. “Maybe living in Europe for a month. Take the train. Bring my camera. Just see what happens.”

For most, sports cards are a nostalgic nod to childhood. But for Billy Manzo, it’s become a career, a business, and a bridge to the big leagues.
As part of Blez Sports Cards, one of the top breaking companies in the game, Billy is deep in the world where cardboard meets commerce, where a single card can command seven figures—and where major league players aren’t just on the cards, they’re collecting them, too.
“I’ve been doing this since I was a kid,” Billy shares.
“I’d always go to trade shows with my dad. But the game has changed.”
Today’s sports card world looks nothing like the overprinted stacks of the ’80s and ’90s. Thanks to serial numbering, one-of-one editions, player autographs, and game-used memorabilia embedded into the cards, rarity is now built into the design. And with rarity comes value.
“We’re talking million-dollar cards. Shohei Ohtani rookie cards, Patrick Mahomes, Steph Curry—all going for seven figures. Even young stars like Corbin Carroll and Paul Skenes are seeing serious heat in the market.”
“MIKE TROUT WAS THE FIRST GUY I CONNECTED WITH OVER THIS. HE STARTED COLLECTING CARDS FOR HIS SON LIKE— ‘HEY, THIS IS WHO YOUR DAD WAS.’”
To put it in perspective, according to Billy, the average box of baseball cards that once cost $50 to $100 is now between $200 to $400—and some high-end boxes can run $7,000 or more. But here’s a twist: buyers don’t have to foot the bill for the whole box. At Blez, collectors can buy into a break by team, only paying for the slot they care about.
“If your kid wants Diamondbacks cards, you can just buy the D-backs spot,” Billy explains. “If we hit, those cards are yours.”
The biggest surprise? The pros themselves are obsessed with collecting.
“Mike Trout was the first guy I really connected with over this. He started collecting cards so he could one day show his son—‘Hey, this is who your dad was.’”
It’s that same personal connection that’s fueled Billy’s growing relationships with players like Corbin Carroll, Evan Longoria, and Zac Gallen.
Every spring, during Arizona’s Cactus League season, Billy hosts what might be the coolest dinner in town—a private, invite-only card-breaking night with Diamondbacks players. The latest gathering was held at Ocean 44, where more than a dozen players gathered not to talk stats—but to rip packs.
“I give each guy a box from the year of their rookie card so they have a chance to pull their own. Then I mix in some high-end product, and they start trading with each other right there at the table.”
It’s a scene that’s as much about camaraderie as collecting.
“One of the best moments was watching a young player tell another guy, ‘Man, I’ve been watching your highlights since I was a kid.’ Even the pros can be starstruck.”
Blez Sports Cards operates at one of the largest scales in the industry, streaming live nearly 24/7 across YouTube, Fanatics Live, and Whatnot. Led by Billy, the team opens a constant flow of product while collectors buy in for the chance to claim high-value cards pulled in real time.
One of the biggest moments this year? Pulling a oneof-a-kind Shohei Ohtani card for a customer who had paid $800 for the Dodgers slot in the break. The card later sold for nearly six figures—purchased by the CEO of Topps himself, who then presented it to Ohtani during Opening Day in Japan.
“WE’RE
TALKING MILLIONDOLLAR CARDS. SHOHEI OHTANI ROOKIE CARDS, PATRICK MAHOMES, STEPH CURRY—ALL GOING FOR SEVEN FIGURES. EVEN YOUNG STARS LIKE CORBIN CARROLL ARE SEEING HEAT.”
“To see that card go from my hands to Ohtani’s was surreal,” Billy says. “It’s those moments that make this more than just a job—it’s a blast.”
While many collectors love the thrill of chasing rookie sleepers, Billy leans toward the tried-and-true talent.
“Everyone wants to find the next big star, but I always tell people—go for the guys who are already showing greatness.”
His current picks?
• Paul Skenes of the Pirates
• Shohei Ohtani
• Established veterans with rookie cards or low-numbered prints
But a word of caution for parents and new collectors: the cheaper the box, the lower your odds.
“It’s like buying a $1 scratch-off ticket versus a $50 one—the big wins are possible, but the odds go up with the investment.”
At the core of it all, Billy’s advice to collectors is simple: know your why.
“Are you collecting for the love of it? For your kids? For the investment? I’ve held onto cards I probably should’ve sold, like my $20,000 Mike Trout rookie. But some cards are more than just paper— they’re personal.”

Where eye care meets Versace walls, designer heat, and A-List vibes
When you walk into Dr. Jay Arora’s Scottsdale office, you’re met with more than just state-of-the-art eye care—you’re stepping into his personal wall of fame.
Photos, memorabilia, and notes of thanks line the space, left by some of the world’s biggest names: Devin Booker. Sean O’Malley. Jeff Hamilton. Kyler Murray. Odell Beckham Jr. The Chainsmokers. These aren’t just patients—they’re friends. People who’ve entrusted Dr. Arora not only with their vision but with their overall well-being.
“I treat every patient the same way I’d treat my mom,” Dr. Arora says. “The same care, the same attention—whether you’re an athlete, a musician, or someone’s nextdoor neighbor.”
But ophthalmology wasn’t always part of the plan.
After finishing medical school, Dr. Arora wasn’t sure which specialty he wanted to pursue. Searching for clarity, he spent a year volunteering in India.
“I taught at an orphanage and saw firsthand how inaccessible eye care was. Watching someone walk in blind and leave seeing 20/20 the next day—those moments sealed it for me.”
Back in the U.S., Dr. Arora threw himself into ophthalmology, completing his
residency and clinical fellowship training in New York City. He joined a large group practice, but when the pandemic hit, he decided to carve out something of his own: Arora Eye, a boutique, concierge-style practice in Scottsdale rooted in precision medicine, personal attention, and elevated experience.
“I saw how impersonal healthcare could be. I wanted to create something more human.”
Today, Arora Eye is known not only for its world-class LASIK and eye care services, but for its highly curated feel. Designer wallpaper. Versace accents. A sneaker wall that includes everything from Off-White to Dior Jordans. But the luxury isn’t just in the décor—it’s in the details.
“I’m obsessive about the small things. Whether it’s the artwork on the wall or the curvature of your cornea—I pay attention.”
That attention to detail has attracted a growing list of high-performing clientele— NBA players, UFC champs, Super Bowl Champs, touring musicians, and more.
“It started organically. One person has a great experience and tells their people. Athletes talk. Musicians talk. Phoenix is smaller than you’d think.”
And the relationships often go far beyond the clinic.

“AN NFL QUARTERBACK WHO NEEDS RAZOR-SHARP PERIPHERAL VISION? WE BUILD AROUND THAT.”
“Sean O’Malley and I hit it off right away—he’s become a good friend. Jeff Hamilton made custom jackets for my wife and me for our wedding. Even Devin Booker’s creative consultant is now one of my most loyal patients. These aren’t just name drops—they’re people I genuinely care about.”
There are surreal moments, too.
“One of Kevin Durant’s closest friends flew in from New York to have me do his LASIK. Afterward, I dropped him off at KD’s place. I remember thinking—how did I end up here?”
And then there was Kobe...
“We lived in the same area and talked about medicine before he passed. That’s a memory I’ll hold onto forever.”
When it comes to care, precision is everything. Dr. Arora offers Contoura LASIK, one of the most advanced and personalized forms of laser vision correction available.
“We don’t do cookie-cutter treatments. Everything is tailored. A touring drummer dealing with dry eyes from stage lights? An NFL quarterback who needs razor-sharp peripheral vision? We build around that.”
He’s even developed custom regimens for athletes—from hydration tips to pregame eye drops. And while Arora Eye offers a full range of services—from routine exams to cataract and glaucoma treatment—it’s the level of attention that sets it apart.
Because your home should feel as good as it looks.
From layouts to lighting, we take care of the details so you can breathe, live, and love the space you're in.
“I TREAT EVERY PATIENT LIKE I’D TREAT MY MOM.”
“We scan every layer of the eye: retina, cornea, optic nerve. Even if you feel fine, we may catch early signs of diabetes, stroke, or neurological disease. The eyes tell a much bigger story.”
He’s also vocal about letting go of contacts.
“Don’t sleep in them—ever. And if you’re still relying on them every day, come talk to me about LASIK. It’s freeing.”
Still, he embraces stylish eyewear.
“I’ve helped players from the Giants, Rays and Suns find frames that not only enhance vision but look sharp on and off the field.”
When asked who’s on his dream patient list?
“LeBron James and Drake. Hopefully they’re reading this.”
Outside the office, Dr. Arora is often found courtside with his wife at Suns games, at the driving range next to PGA/ LIV Golf icon Jon Rahm, or traveling between Arizona and Los Angeles.
“Really, I’m just here to help people see better.”
In a city full of medical talent, Dr. Arora is building something rare: a clinic that’s modern, personal, and undeniably cool.
“You’ve got one set of eyes. Take care of them. And if you ever need help—I’ve got you.”

ARTICLE BY DR. BROOK CHOULET, THE PERFORMANCE PSYCHIATRIST™ PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
In today’s performance-driven world, strength is often measured in silence. But high-performing men—from the NBA hardwood to the Olympic track—are rewriting that script.
Mental health isn’t a weakness to hide, it’s a skill to master. And from the many athletes and high-achievers I’ve interviewed, one message rings clear: you can’t reach your peak if your mind isn’t in shape.
Here’s how four elite performers are reshaping what mental fitness means and what every man can take from their playbook.
“You can be in peak shape, but if your mind isn’t there…”
NBA veteran DeAndre Jordan learned early that the physical grind is only half the equation. “I had to learn how to be mentally fit,” he told me. “You can be in peak shape, but if your mind isn’t there, it shows up in your performance.”
When Jordan moved into the postseason, he doesn’t just train—he protects his focus. “Eliminating a lot of outside noise daily is vital… I tend to eliminate social media during this time along with watching sports news and coverage on the playoffs.” On game day? “Relaxation and visualization. I meditate and relax with my family and stay as present as possible.”
Mental fitness, he emphasizes, is a discipline—not a default.

For NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan, basketball has always been more than just a game—it’s a sanctuary and a coping mechanism. That same mindset fuels him today. Through the highs and lows of a demanding season, DeRozan stays grounded by accepting the emotional spectrum that comes with it. “You’re going to have great moments and down moments, but how you approach those moments—both the good and the bad—keeps you consistent in understanding the main thing.”
DeRozan credits his mental resilience to the people who stood by him early in his career.
“A lot of my help came from close people within this league, especially coaches,” he said.
Late-night conversations in empty gyms became moments of reflection and mentorship. His wellness routine also includes daily physical recovery practices—“sauna, cold plunge... every single night.”
For DeRozan, physical recovery isn’t just about performance—“you feel better mentally by taking care of your body physically.” It’s a reminder that elite athletes aren’t immune to struggle—but they build systems that support both mind and body.
As dogs age, their spine and joints undergo wear and tear—just like ours. Misalignments can lead to stiffness, limping, and decreased energy. Chiropractic care offers a safe, drug-free way to realign the body, relieve pressure on the nervous system, and restore natural movement.
Our gentle, hands-on approach supports mobility, reduces pain, and enhances your dog’s overall well-being—so they can stay active, happy, and by your side for years to come.

“Faith,
Olympian Manteo Mitchell didn’t just finish his 4x400m relay at the 2012 Games—he did it with a broken leg. “Honestly, there was more going on mentally than physically,” he said. “I had to channel every emotion and setback… Faith, focus, finish—it’s my personal life statement.”
But Mitchell’s most powerful insight isn’t about grit—it’s about identity.
“Men aspire to be this or that, but they often fail to realize who they are within themselves. Find your strengths and weaknesses and build from that.”
Structure, he insists, is non-negotiable. “Being disciplined is key if you want to be successful… I’m a firm believer in visualization and writing things out to portray the image you’ve created.”
Former collegiate athlete and iFit trainer John Peel sees mental health not as a luxury, but a daily priority.
“If we aren’t confident in where we are mentally, we give ourselves more opportunity to fail physically,” he told me. John now encourages clients to open up before they work out—matching emotional honesty with physical effort.
“Sometimes a reset is exactly what we need.”
For Peel, even burnout has value—if we lean into it, recognize it early, and allow space to recover, we come back stronger.

From blue-collar beginnings to blackand-gold glory, Merril Hoge built a life on grit. He played 122 consecutive games as a running back in the NFL, beat cancer, survived open-heart surgery, raised a family, and wrote a bestselling book. Today, he’s a sought-after speaker inspiring others to do the same: Find a Way.
PVCL’s Nadine Bubeck sat down with Merril for an intimate tell-all interview. Having ties to Arizona, Merril’s Q&A isn’t about highlight reels—it’s about what happens when the lights go out and life demands more. He opens up like never before about the hits that shaped him—on the field, in the hospital, and everywhere in between.
“PEOPLE THINK IT’S ALL PHYSICAL, BUT THE NFL IS A MENTAL GAME. TALENT GETS YOU THERE. MENTAL TOUGHNESS KEEPS YOU THERE.”
YOU’VE WORN MANY HATS—NFL PLAYER, ANALYST, SPEAKER—BUT AS WE CHAT ON ZOOM, I HAVE TO ASK: WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE JERSEY HANGING BEHIND YOU?
That’s my Bears jersey. For their 100th anniversary, the Chicago Bears sent everyone who’s ever played for them a framed jersey. Growing up, Walter Payton was my hero—so to get something like that from an organization he made iconic… surreal.
WHERE DID YOUR OWN STORY BEGIN?
Pocatello, Idaho. People hear Idaho and think “potatoes”—and yeah, I worked the fields. I moved pipe, harvested potatoes, worked 5,000 acres as a cowboy trapping gophers. I rode horses, ranched, lived that life. But when I saw football on TV at age eight, I fell in love. That was it.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST SUIT UP?
Eight years old. Our team was sponsored by McDonald’s—if we won, we got to eat free. That first season, we didn’t win a single game. But we came back the next year and went undefeated. Eleven Happy Meals later, I was hooked.
YOUR COLLEGE CAREER AT IDAHO STATE SET 44 RECORDS. HOW DID THAT WORK ETHIC TAKE ROOT?
At 12, I was up at 5 a.m., out working the fields. Summers weren’t for sleeping in. That mentality—that grit—never left me. It’s what fueled my whole career.
TAKE ME TO DRAFT DAY, 1987. WHAT STANDS OUT?
I was projected to go in the fifth round to the Raiders. Fifth round passed. Sixth. Seventh. Nothing. I dropped to my knees by my mom’s side of the bed—she had passed the year before— and just prayed. Not to be drafted, but for peace. I walked away, went to play basketball. When I got home, my dad said, “There’s someone on the phone.” It was the Steelers. Life changed in that moment.
THEN YOU PLAYED 122 STRAIGHT GAMES— LONGEST ACTIVE STREAK AT THE TIME. THAT’S UNREAL FOR A RUNNING BACK.
I didn’t even know I had the streak until Dan Marino went down the year before. But yeah, to take that many hits, week after week, and show up every time—that’s something I’m proud of.
“LIKE FOOTBALL, I STUDIED, PLANNED AND TRAINED. THE CHEMO WAS HELL. THEY CALLED ONE DRUG THE ‘RED DEATH.’”
WHAT DOES IT TAKE MENTALLY TO SUSTAIN THAT?
IQ, quickness, and then speed—in that order. People think it’s all physical, but the NFL is a mental game. Talent gets you there. Mental toughness keeps you there.
EVENTUALLY, THOUGH, THE GAME FORCED YOU OUT—NOT FROM INJURY, BUT FROM WHAT HAPPENED AFTER.
People say a concussion ended my career. That’s not true. Improper handling of head trauma did. I was hit during a preseason game, started answering questions wrong—thought I was in Tampa when I was in Kansas City. They pulled me off, did scans, sent me home. Five days later, a doctor cleared me over the phone asking: “how do you feel?” I responded saying I felt fine and he cleared me. This was archaic even in 1994... you must at least go see the player.
THAT SOUNDS TERRIFYING.
It was. I trusted the system—we all did. But after another hit, I went into cardiac arrest in the locker room. Ended up in intensive care. I had to relearn how to read. Battled depression. There were no protocols back then. No roadmap. But I kept moving.
YOU LANDED AT ESPN. DID THAT HELP?
Absolutely. It challenged me mentally in a new way. That stimulation helped my brain heal. And the Steelers gave me my first chance in broadcasting, which I’ll always be grateful for.
I was 38. Three-pound tumor in my lower back. The doctor didn’t sugarcoat it: brutal chemo every three weeks. He said, “I can’t guarantee this is going to work.” And then he hung up.
HOW
I spiraled. Thought, “This is beyond me.” But my daughter— she was nine—climbed in my lap, looked me in the eyes, and said, “You better find a way.” That flipped the switch. My son Beau, who was seven, goes, “Hey Dad, can we go to Walmart?” That balance—serious and light—it grounded me.
Like football, I studied, planned and trained. The chemo was hell. They called one drug the “Red Death.” It felt like that. But I showed up. Eventually, they told me I was cancer-free.
Navigating Chemo
THEN CAME OPEN-HEART SURGERY.
Chemo had weakened my aorta. I needed surgery. Doctors said it would be two months before I could work. I was back on ESPN in two weeks. Preparation saved me. My lifelong investment in health paid off. That’s why I preach fitness—it’s your best insurance policy.
YOU TURNED ALL THAT INTO YOUR BESTSELLING BOOK, FIND A WAY.
The phrase goes back to when I was 12. I taped it to my bedroom door. After my daughter said it during my cancer battle, it became my mission. The book’s not about football. It’s about owning your life. No blame. No excuses. Just ownership.
YOU SAY PARENTING IS LEADERSHIP. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?
I’ve learned more by listening than talking. My kids were shaped more by what they saw than what they heard—because actions always speak louder than words.
WHAT’S YOUR MESSAGE TO YOUTH COACHES AND PARENTS?
Judge your kids by the yardsticks of their years, not yours. If your kid’s five, remember what five feels like. Give them room to grow. Let them love the game first.
YOU’RE STILL ACTIVE WITH THE STEELERS AND LOVE SPEAKING. WHY DOES THAT LIGHT YOU UP SO MUCH?
If I had to choose one thing to do forever, it’s speaking. I don’t have to do it—I get to. My story is made of lessons from Walter Payton, Chuck Noll, my wife, my kids. If I can pass something on that helps someone get off their couch, that’s the win.
WHAT’S YOUR DEFINITION OF VICTORY NOW?
Victory is about the process. It’s about ownership—how you prepare, how you show up. That’s what Find a Way is all about.

Midlife relationships often hit turbulence not from lack of love—but from years of built-up assumptions, habits, and unspoken feelings that no longer work.

CHEF J PERRY’S UNSCRIPTED RISE TO PRIVATE DINING ROYALTY
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Before plating dinners for Aerosmith or getting calls from Jeff Bezos’ team, Chef J Perry was a skater kid bouncing between high schools, searching for direction. His culinary journey didn’t start in a classroom—it started with a broken dream, a surfboard, and a San Diego kitchen.
Now a self-taught, globally seasoned chef, J is known for soulful Italian cooking and quiet confidence. We talked Boston roots, celebrity kitchens, and the road less traveled.
YOU DIDN’T ATTEND CULINARY SCHOOL, YET YOU’VE COOKED FOR BIG NAMES. HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY BEGIN?
I grew up between Boston and San Diego. When my parents split at 13— right in my baseball prime—I lost my footing. I bounced through eight high schools. Surfing gave me peace, but food gave me purpose. At 16, I took a job in a kitchen and fell in love with the rhythm. No culinary school. Just passion, mistakes, mentors, and nonstop hustle.
WHAT DREW YOU TO ITALIAN CUISINE?
I fell into Italian cooking through relationships. I dated an Italian girl, and her chef friends from Rome, Milan, and Venice took me in. They taught me the craft and told me to live it—so I moved to Italy, learned the language, worked the kitchens, and immersed myself in the culture.
AND YOUR MENTOR—ROBERTO, OWNER OF A FORMER RESTAURANT IN SAN DIEGO. HE HE HAD A HUGE IMPACT ON YOU...
Chef Roberto walked into the fine dining Italian spot where I’d just taken over as executive chef. I’d earned great reviews, but his opinion mattered most. He and a group of top chefs tasted everything in silence. After dinner, Roberto stood up and said, “Today, he is an Italian chef.” I nearly broke. It meant everything.
AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE YOU DIDN’T WANT TO WORK IN RESTAURANTS ANYMORE?
I thrived on the intensity, but the grind wore me down. After years cooking up and down the coast—eventually making a top 75 destination chefs list—a no-nonsense German woman handed me her card and asked, “Ever thought about being a private chef?” I hadn’t. “Better pay, your schedule, amazing clients,” she said. I called. It changed everything.
LET’S TALK ABOUT THOSE CLIENTS. ROYAL FAMILIES, CELEBRITIES, BILLIONAIRES...
It started with a family in Texas who owned an airline and practically a city—five homes on one estate. That opened doors. Then came royalty from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Huge events. Lavish dinners. I once had a 13-year-old royal test my knife sharpness by shaving his arm—he said it had to be sharp enough so it could make a slice. I took the knife back real quick.
WILD! AND THEN THERE’S YOUR SISTER—LINDA PERRY. MOST PEOPLE KNOW HER FROM 4 NON BLONDES OR WRITING FOR PINK AND CHRISTINA AGUILERA.
Linda’s always been my biggest supporter. When she hosted events at her studio, she had me cater. One night it was Courtney Love, another, Guns N’ Roses at the sushi station. She brought the industry to me.
AND ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST NIGHTS WAS THE ART OF ELYSIUM GALA HONORING LINDA...
Yes—500 people, all vegan. She said, “Make it healing. Every dish needs meaning.” I served mushroom “scallops,” fennel, watercress—ingredients with

anti-inflammatory properties. My menu video played on projection screens as we plated. It felt like theater. Steven Tyler, Elijah Wood, Joaquin Phoenix—they all came to meet me. Surreal.
Johnny Depp was there too. My sister started bragging about her Captain Jack impression—right as he walked up behind her. I came in from stage left. That was the photo I really wanted.
AND THEN YOUR SISTER AUCTIONED YOU OFF!
[Laughs] She grabbed the mic and said, “We’re auctioning off my brother.” A bidding war broke out. Rob Cavanaugh won—$45,000 for a dinner for 60 with Aerosmith.
HOW DID THE JEFF BEZOS OPPORTUNITY COME ABOUT?
Private Chefs Inc. called me. Four NDAs later, I was flown to Texas and dropped at a massive, secret compound. Didn’t know who it was at first. Then the helicopters showed up. My wife figured it out: “You’re cooking for Bezos.” Eventually I met him. He loved my smoked chili made with bighorn sheep they hunted. That chili—15 hours in the smoker—sealed the deal. That relationship lasted almost three years before digging my heels in Arizona.
LET’S TALK ABOUT VERSATILITY. YOU CAN GO FROM VEGAN FOR 500 TO BIGHORN CHILI.
Say yes, then figure it out. No limits—sushi, Southwest, vegan, Italian. I’ve always been hungry to learn, and I still am.
NOW YOU’RE IN ARIZONA, BUILDING SOMETHING BIGGER.
Arizona feels like home. When demand for private chefs surged during the pandemic, I saw a chance to build something bigger—a top-tier private chef collective for the Valley. It’s about more than food— it’s trust, personality, and experience. I’m also consulting, curating events, and creating partnerships that blend food, story, and lifestyle.
Today, I offer full-service private dining—from dinners for two to large-scale events. Every menu is custom, every detail intentional. No two experiences are the same.
YOU ALSO HAVE A CLOTHING LINE—DIRTY RAGS.
I’ve always loved fashion—blame my years as a Nordstrom GM. Chefs start the day with clean towels, end with dirty rags. It’s a metaphor for life. My brand, Dirty Rags, is healing comfort wear with words like “freedom” and “resilience” on the back—clothing that tells a story.
AND A BOOK IN THE WORKS?
It’s about 10 colleges redefining food culture. After years consulting in campus dining, I saw how far it’s come. These programs do what restaurants can’t—blending food, sustainability, and story.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE ASPIRING CHEFS?
Listen. Respect the process. Show up with integrity and humility. The best chefs aren’t loud—they observe.
WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU NOW?
I never thought I’d be a great dad, husband, or chef—but I am. That’s success: using your gifts, earning trust, staying grateful.
IT’S WEDNESDAY NIGHT. WHAT’S YOUR FAMILY ASKING YOU TO COOK?
Pasta. Simple, soulful, handmade. My wife’s friends love when I go Latin. But me? Linguine aglio e olio with chili flakes and good olive oil—that’s home.

You’re doing what you’ve always done—but the results aren’t the same. Energy is lower. Gut won’t budge. The drive—in the gym, at work, in the home—just isn’t there. You chalk it up to getting older. But what if it’s more than that?
For men in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, hormonal shifts are real—and they’re often overlooked. Here’s what you should know:
• In your 40s: Testosterone drops about 1% a year after 30—leading to slower recovery, belly fat, and declining sexual wellness.
• In your 50s: That slow dip accelerates. Thyroid issues become more common. Muscle mass is harder to maintain. Mood swings and sleep issues may creep in.
• In your 60s: Lower testosterone, sluggish thyroid, and insulin resistance can triple team your metabolism. Fatigue, brain fog, and ED become more than an occasional frustration—they’re persistent.
ARTICLE BY JORDAN KOPCIO, D.C. N.M.D., MEN’S REVIVAL
SIGNS YOUR HORMONES MIGHT BE OUT OF BALANCE... AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
1. YOU’RE ALWAYS TIRED (EVEN AFTER A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP)
This isn’t just “busy season” fatigue. This is waking up tired, dragging through the day, and wondering where your edge went.
What’s going on: Low testosterone and thyroid dysfunction are common culprits. One in five men over 40 has some level of thyroid imbalance—most don’t know it.
What to do: Get real lab work (not just a basic panel). Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), thyroid support, and lifestyle tweaks can turn things around.
Sudden weight gain—or stubborn fat around the middle—even though your routine hasn’t changed.
Why it happens: Low testosterone, high cortisol, and insulin resistance form a metabolic triple threat—harder to fight with age, without the right tools.
What to do: Optimize testosterone. Eat to balance blood sugar (cut sugar, focus on lean protein and fiber). Prioritize strength training.

Snapping at your partner. Losing focus at work. Feeling unmotivated. These are hormonal signals your body is sending.
The science: Testosterone helps regulate dopamine and serotonin. Low T can double your risk of depression. Add cortisol overload from stress, and it’s a recipe for brain fog and burnout.
What to do: Don’t just “tough it out.” Hormone balance is directly tied to mental sharpness and emotional stability.
Not feeling like yourself? It’s not just about sexual wellness. It’s about total wellbeing.
The numbers: By 40, 40% of men face ED. Testosterone is key— but so are thyroid, cortisol, and metabolism.
What to do: Get a full hormone workup (not just total testosterone—ask about free testosterone, thyroid, and estradiol). There are treatment options like TRT or enclomiphene that work.
Sore for days after a workout? A tweak turns into an injury that lingers? Recovery issues are a sign your hormones aren’t pulling their weight.
The facts: Testosterone helps repair muscle tissue. When levels drop, so does your body’s ability to rebuild and recover. What to do: Strength train smart, get your hormones checked, and support your body with the right nutrition.
MORAL OF THE STORY… TAKE ACTION.

7 REASONS EMSCULPT NEO® IS THE BODY GAME-CHANGER YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR
At Southwest Spine & Sports, we’re constantly vetting technologies that go beyond hype—tools that serve our patients’ goals for strength, recovery, and long-term wellness. EMSCULPT NEO® is one of the most effective, research-backed treatments we’ve added to our practice. It targets what matters most: muscle, core stability, and functional results.
Whether you’re working toward a beach-ready body, dealing with a stubborn midsection, or simply want to feel strong again, this treatment offers real, sustainable change. EMSCULPT NEO® is a newly FDA-approved, non-invasive procedure that simultaneously builds muscle and burns fat. We’re proud to be one of the few clinics in the Valley offering it under expert medical supervision.
Here are seven reasons I recommend it to a range of patients—from high performers and athletes to those in recovery or simply looking to regain strength and confidence.
1. NON-INVASIVE WITH ZERO DOWNTIME
No needles, no anesthesia, no surgery. You can resume normal activity immediately. Sessions are quick—30 minutes—and feel like an intense workout without the soreness. The most common side effects are mild fatigue or redness that fades fast.
2. BUILDS MUSCLE BEYOND WHAT EXERCISE ALONE CAN DO
Using high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology, EMSCULPT NEO® triggers 20,000+ supramaximal muscle contractions per session—far deeper than voluntary movement. Clinical trials show an average 25% increase in muscle volume after a standard protocol. The result? Improved core strength, balance, posture, and joint support.
A well-designed storage system isn’t just about organization— it’s about efficiency, accessibility, and maximizing every inch of your space. At Triton, we create custom storage solutions that bring order and style to any area of your home or business.
3. DESTROYS FAT WHILE DEFINING MUSCLE
In tandem with muscle building, radiofrequency (RF) energy targets and eliminates subcutaneous fat cells, which your body flushes out naturally. On average, patients see a 30% reduction in fat in treated areas—especially helpful for the abdomen, arms, thighs, and flanks.
4. TARGETS HARD-TO-REACH AREAS AND ADAPTS TO YOUR GOALS
EMSCULPT NEO® is one of the only treatments that can safely sculpt multiple areas: abs, glutes, arms, thighs, calves, and flanks. Whether you’re regaining core strength after pregnancy, rebuilding muscle after injury, or enhancing athletic performance, it’s adaptable to your needs.
5. SUPPORTS RECOVERY AND SAFE RECONDITIONING
For patients recovering from injury, surgery, or chronic pain, EMSCULPT NEO® offers a low-impact way to rebuild strength. It activates deep muscle groups without stress on joints or inflamed tissues—making it a smart option for early rehab, pain prevention, and mobility gains.
6. EFFICIENT AND TIME-FRIENDLY
Each session is just 30 minutes with no prep or recovery required. A typical plan involves four sessions spaced over two to three weeks. It’s ideal for anyone juggling family, career, or training goals who still wants results without disrupting their routine.
7. CLINICALLY PROVEN AND PATIENT-APPROVED
EMSCULPT NEO® is FDA-approved and backed by peer-reviewed research. Studies show high patient satisfaction—91% report improved tone and strength, particularly in the core. It’s not just about looks; it’s about function, confidence, and long-term performance.

DR. ART MOLLEN SPILLS HIS WELLNESS SECRETS— AND DROPS A MAJOR MARATHON REVEAL
“No one has ever run a race through Paradise Valley before. Now it’s happening.”
Every morning, at 80 years young, Dr. Art Mollen laces up his shoes and hits the pavement for five miles. After that, he swims a mile in the pool at Mountain Shadows. Later in the day, he’s on the stationary bike, lifting weights in his home gym. This isn’t about checking a box—it’s the ritual that has helped him live the life he’s long preached: movement, discipline, passion, purpose.
“People think I’m nuts,” he laughs. “But I’m telling you, 90 percent of it is for my mind. The physical is the bonus.”
Mind, body, spirit—it’s the philosophy that has guided Dr. Art Mollen’s life and career for more than five decades. A national wellness icon. A bestselling author. A race founder. A proud father and grandfather. A man who is still setting the pace.
This year, as Dr. Mollen celebrates his 80th birthday, he’s also marking another
milestone: the 50th anniversary of the Phoenix 10K, one of the first running events of its kind in Arizona. But this November, the race is making history. For the first time ever, they’re adding a full marathon—and the course will wind through Paradise Valley, where Mollen has lived and raised his family for decades.
“No one’s ever run a race through Paradise Valley before. This is my home. To be able to bring this through the streets where my kids grew up, past Piestewa Peak, Camelback Mountain… it’s incredibly meaningful.”
The epic event wouldn’t be happening without the backing of immense community support.
“Mayor Stanton called me directly. That doesn’t happen often. He believed in this from the start. Governor Hobbs and Mayor Gallego have championed this as well.”
And as always with Mollen’s events, the race will draw an inspiring lineup of participants. Over the years, his races have attracted Olympians like Steve Scott and Joan Benoit Samuelson, Boston Marathon legends like Bill Rodgers, and Arizona icons like Governor Doug Ducey and Phoenix Suns players. This isn’t new for Mollen— he’s long made it a tradition to involve high-profile athletes, celebrities, and elite runners, not just as participants, but as part of the community. Many have even been inducted into his Runner’s Hall of Fame, a passion project recognizing not just athletic achievement but contributions to the sport and to the spirit of running.
But if you know Art Mollen, you know the race is just part of the story.
Dr. Mollen has been a fixture in Arizona’s wellness landscape for half a century. Before wellness became a buzzword, before social media influencers and fitspiration hashtags, Mollen was there— penning nationally syndicated columns in more than 100 newspapers, hosting a 30-year health radio show on KTAR, and publishing five books that have shaped how people think about movement, prevention, and longevity.
“I never set out to be ‘the running doc.’ I wanted to be more than that. I wanted to be known for preventive care. For listening. For showing people how to live longer, healthier, better.”
And while his patient list has included countless celebrities, athletes, and CEOs— many of whom still call and text him for advice—it’s his role as a father where Mollen’s legacy is perhaps most deeply felt.
In our February issue, his daughter, New York Times bestselling author and actress Jenny Mollen, penned what she called a roast and a toast to her dad on the occasion of his 80th birthday. She didn’t hold back.
“When I was asked to write a letter commemorating your 80th birthday,” Jenny
wrote, “I hesitated, as I was planning to save my best material for when you were dead.”
It’s pure Jenny: sharp, hilarious, heartfelt. But beneath the humor is the kind of tribute every parent hopes to one day receive.
“I’ve thought about your death often,” she continued. “Not because I wish for your demise, but because I’m uncertain about my identity without you. As the legendary prophet Stevie Nicks once wrote, ‘I built my life around you.’”
When asked how he felt reading the piece, Mollen doesn’t even pretend to hold back.
“I cried like a baby. She has a gift with words.”
Jenny’s writing—whether in her books I Like You Just the Way I Am and Live Fast Die Hot, or in her raw, real Instagram posts— has always pulled back the curtain on family dynamics, and her relationship with her dad is no exception. She writes about growing up in Arizona, about the high bar he set—but also about the patience, humor, and grace he’s always shown.
“You never made me feel ashamed to fail,” she wrote. “In fact, you taught me that I needed hardships to grow—and that tenacity will always trump natural talent.”
When you ask Dr. Mollen about fatherhood—raising Jenny, Samantha, Brad, and stepson Chase—or about the six grandchildren who now fill his life with even more joy, he always comes back to one word: listening.
“Listen to your kids,” he says. “Be patient. Let them mess up. They’re going to mess up—that’s part of it. But you have to be there. You have to hear them.”
It’s the same advice he’s given to his patients over the years. The same philosophy that’s made him one of the most trusted voices in the Valley. And the same reason why even now, at 80, his phone still buzzes with people asking for his take on a diagnosis, a symptom, or a plan.
“I don’t always give the standard answer, but I’ll always give you my honest opinion.”
Training for this November’s race—especially amid the Arizona summer heat— comes with its own playbook, straight from Mollen himself: early mornings are key.
“You have to get out there early. Beat the heat. Stay consistent. You don’t have to be fast. You just have to show up,” he says.
He advises aspiring half marathoners to run at least three to four miles several days a week, with one longer run on the weekend. For those taking on the full marathon, he encourages at least nine miles consistently, gradually building to longer distances. But most of all?
“Don’t overdo it. Don’t run too fast, too far, too soon. That’s the mistake so many people make.”
This November, when runners take their marks on the streets of Phoenix and—for the first time—Paradise Valley, they’ll be part of a legacy that’s about much more than the miles. Because if there’s one thing Dr. Art Mollen will tell you, it’s this:
“Don’t get too comfortable. Stay passionate. Stay moving.”

As an interventional cardiologist with Cardiac Solutions, I treat heart attacks, lead complex procedures, and push for prevention.
Here are 5 things I wish every man knew:
1. FIT DOESN’T MEAN SAFE
Great abs don’t guarantee clear arteries. I’ve treated marathoners and CEOs in peak shape with major heart attacks. Fitness isn’t immunity.
2. SYMPTOMS AREN’T ALWAYS LOUD
Chest pain is classic, but heart disease often whispers: fatigue, nausea, jaw pain, dizziness. Don’t wait for something big to happen. Subtle signs can be serious.
3. STRESS HITS HARD
High performers “power through,” but stress silently raises blood pressure, inflames arteries, and fuels disease. Managing stress isn’t soft—it’s essential.
4. KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
Most men don’t know their BP, cholesterol, or coronary calcium score—one of the best predictors of risk. Stop guessing. Get screened.
5. STRENGTH IS TAKING ACTION
Pushing through isn’t strength. Showing up is. One ignored symptom or skipped screening can change everything. Get ahead of it.

AZ’s bold builders go Hollywood with high-end homes and hilarious hijinks
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
With a reality show in the works, celebrity clients on speed dial, and a Halloween video that once featured their designer dressed as a witch, Tinker Development is hardly your average luxury builder.
They build jaw-dropping custom estates in Paradise Valley. They also make you laugh.
Tinker Development was founded by Erik Tinker, who later brought on partner Ryan Nelson—an attorney-turned-stand-up-comic-turned-content-creator. Together, they’ve built the brand as much on personality as precision. “We take the builds seriously,” they say. “But never ourselves.”
The two met in 2016 when Ryan, filming a demo for a real estate client, noticed a rogue drone flying uncomfortably close to his own. “I was thinking, who is this jack*ss?” he laughs. Turns out, it was Erik—flying his own drone over the same project.
Within minutes, the two were dogfighting mid-air, and shortly after, cracking up in person over their shared love of comedy, aviation, and just about everything else. “It was instant,” Ryan says. “It felt like we’d known each other forever.”
At the time, Erik had just begun to dip into the PV luxury market after years of managing small remodels in west Phoenix. His entry into the high-end space was strategic—he acquired a cluster of older homes side-by-side and essentially revitalized an entire pocket of a neighborhood. While most builders focused on polished before-and-afters, Erik was obsessed with the messy middle. “There’s too much focus on the final reveal. The in-between is where the story lives,” he says.
Ryan had recently wrapped a comedy TV pilot produced by Dog the Bounty Hunter and his late wife Beth.
“It didn’t go anywhere, but I was hooked on the process,” he says. When Erik floated the idea of building a show around his work, Ryan was all in.
“He’s a natural on camera, and the characters on job sites are pure gold. We knew this world had something.”
Their first attempt was low-budget and DIY—just Erik and Ryan running around with a camera, joking on-site while showcasing trades. It was called Building with Tinker, and despite being stitched together with no budget and no plan, it caught the attention of producers.
“We had TV people reaching out,” Ryan says. “They loved that we weren’t trying to be like the other builders. We were just being us.”
The us part is important. Tinker isn’t run like a traditional firm. Erik’s wife Kirsten serves as controller. The whole team leans in to pranks, skits, and spontaneous ideas—like letting Alice Cooper operate a full-size excavator, or turning a house demo into a heavy equipment rodeo.
“It’s basically the Avengers of Arizona real estate... But if the Avengers pranked each other and had flash-bangs going off at demo day.”
“We’re a small team, but it feels like a clubhouse. Everyone’s in on the jokes. Everyone pulls their weight,” says Ryan.
There’s also a surprising amount of discipline beneath the antics. Ryan’s legal background helps guide contracts and development deals. Erik’s passion for design and process keeps the build quality uncompromising.
“We’re a little chaotic on the surface,” Erik admits. “But we’re incredibly intentional behind the scenes. We care deeply about every detail.”
That balance—high-level builds, high-level fun—is what makes the brand work. Clients feel it. Trades feel it. The audience feels it.
“Social media is a highlight reel for most people. We want to show the fails too. The chaos. The real stuff. Because that’s what people connect with,” says Ryan.
It’s also what makes for great TV.
Over the last five years, Tinker Development has flirted with several networks and streaming platforms, exploring versions of a reality series.
“We’ve had HGTV meets Jackass pitches. We’ve had offers. But we kept saying no. Everything felt too forced or formulaic,” says Ryan.
Then came a connection through real estate powerhouse Katrina Barrett, Owner of Walt Danley Local Luxury Christie’s International Real Estate, who introduced them to a media group.
“They understood the tone. It felt right,” Erik says.
A new show is now in early development—centered around their next big spec build: a 12,000-square-foot car gallery home designed by CP Drewett and sales led by The Agency’s Barrett.
“It’s basically the Avengers of Arizona real estate,” Ryan jokes. “But if the Avengers pranked each other and had flash-bangs going off at demo day.”
They claim bragging rights as the first builders to let SWAT teams run tactical drills inside their demo homes. Tear gas? Check. Bite suit? Absolutely.
“We’re not trying to be edgy. We just say yes to things that are interesting and align with our energy,” says Erik. It’s been part of their playbook since 2016.
That energy carries into everything— from Blackhawk helicopter rides with ex-special forces media crews to neardeath experiences filming batting prac tice with MLB clients.
“It’s the kind of stuff you can’t script,” Ryan says. “And that’s what makes it worth capturing.”
Despite the buzz, they’re still builders first. The homes are serious. The crafts manship is meticulous. The team’s work has attracted athletes, entertainers, and design lovers who trust them to execute bold ideas with heart and humor.
“We’re not everyone’s builder,” Ryan says. “But for the people who get us—it clicks.”
And while the business keeps growing, the vibe stays rooted in friendship, hustle, and a total refusal to take things too seriously.
“If someone doesn’t vibe with our approach, they’re probably not our person, and that’s okay. We’re not trying to be everything to everyone. We’re trying to build the best homes—and have a hell of a time doing it,” says Erik.

HOW TODAY’S MODERN MAN IS REDEFINING LUXURY LIVING
ARTICLE BY MELISSA MAE, MELISSA MAE DESIGN
PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
In the evolving world of luxury interiors, one thing is certain: men are more invested than ever in creating deeply personal, performance-driven spaces that reflect their passions and priorities. From the garage to the bar to the backlit walls of a private lounge, today’s affluent male clients are designing homes that go far beyond function— they’re crafting immersive experiences.
One of the most jaw-dropping requests I’ve received came from a male client who wanted his luxury car garage to feel like a design destination. We sourced a custom Italian grid lighting system made from pure Italian brass—architectural, sculptural, and dramatically functional. When lit, it casts a warm, golden glow across his show car collection. It’s not just a garage— it’s a gallery of motion and metal, a shrine to horsepower and craftsmanship.
THE MODERN BAR: A SPEAKEASY STATE OF MIND
Bars are no longer built-in cabinetry with a few floating shelves. They’ve evolved into private escapes—often hidden, highly stylized, and moody. I’m seeing a major push toward speakeasy-inspired designs that double as entertainment lounges. Think low lighting, dark-stained walnut, backlit Cristallo quartzite, and vintage-inspired displays. These spaces are meant to stir emotion. They invite you in with intention and deliver the kind of ambiance you’d expect in a tucked-away London bar.
Masculinity in design doesn’t mean leather recliners and antlers on the wall. For today’s high-end client, it’s about layered restraint and powerful detail. Deep desaturated colors with matte sheens, dramatic stains, and cabinetry in moody hues evoke understated strength. Finishes like brushed brass, gunmetal, hot-rolled steel, and matte black all create presence without predictability. It’s about building tension through texture, letting contrast do the talking.
In shared homes, blending tastes is key. One partner might crave ultra-masculine minimalism, while the other prefers warmth and cohesion. My strategy? Layer contrast intentionally. A space can feel bold and masculine through lighting and finish, while still honoring the architecture of the broader home. It’s about marrying edge with elegance. When done right, you don’t have to compromise. You elevate.

Men today want more than a man cave. They want a point of view. A well-designed space isn’t about masculine or feminine— it’s about meaning, identity, and intention.

FROM FRIDAY THE 13TH TO DISNEY LULLABIES
ARTICLE BY NADINE BUBECK | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
“If you can make a life in music—that’s success. Not #1 hits. A life .”
Looking for a summer read? Grab a backstage pass.
Fred Mollin has composed for cult classics ( Friday the 13th), produced hits for multiple legends, and made lullabies that helped generations of babies drift to sleep. Now, he’s telling his story in Unplugged , a new memoir filled with behind-the-scenes moments, music milestones, and candid industry tales.
We sat down with Fred to talk Elvis, Elton, and everything in between.
What role did music play in your childhood?
“I grew up in Merrick, Long Island—pure Leave It to Beaver suburbia. My parents didn’t play music, but my siblings did, and by six I was buying Elvis records. I turned trash cans into drums. When The Beatles hit at 11, that was it—I wanted guitars, screaming girls, the whole life.”
And you initially wanted to be the star on stage...
“Yes, until I was 21. Then I helped a friend with a demo—it led to a record deal, and I realized I loved being behind the scenes, shaping the sound, directing the vision.”
So what does a record producer actually do?
“Some producers are there to roll something up, but really, it’s like being a film director. You’re overseeing the entire vision of the record. Every note, every take... you fulfill the artist’s vision and elevate it.”
Your big break?
“At 23, we produced Sometimes When We Touch our third record with Dan Hill. The U.S. label told us, ‘This better be a hit or we drop him.’ Then we heard Barry Man’s rough piano vocal with Dan’s lyrics—and we knew. It was magic.”
What happened after that hit?
“Offers rolled in. Clive Davis called and said, ‘Move to L.A.—I’ll give you work.’ And he did. We were just kids. It felt surreal.”
What was it like working with Michael McDonald?
“I cold-called him—he was new in the Doobie Brothers. I said, ‘Will you sing background vocals?’ He said, ‘Sure, come on down.’ We’ve been friends ever since.
And Billy Joel?
“We worked together on duets—one for Johnny Mathis and one for Jimmy Webb. He’s the real deal.”
You mentioned Willie Nelson made a huge impression—in just 15 minutes?
“Willie pulled up in his bus in Nashville. The doors opened, smoke wafted out—and I don’t mean engine smoke. He stepped off, said, ‘Where’s the mic?’ Didn’t even say hello. I walked him to the booth, rolled tape, and he did three takes of one verse and chorus. Perfect. Then he said, ‘Sounds good?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He goes, ‘Gotta go.’ Gone.”
90210 and Friday the 13th are on your resume. Quite the contrast.
“My brother was a producer on 90210. I scored the episode where Tori Spelling’s character marks a milestone in her relationship. Pretty big moment. Then I scored 72 episodes of Friday the 13th: The Series and two of the films. It’s wild—one minute you’re scoring horror, next minute you’re making lullabies.”
Speaking of the Disney Lullaby albums...
“In 1999, Disney’s Jay Landers asked if I’d do a meditative instrumental lullaby album. It took off—we made seven more. It might be the most meaningful work I’ve done.”
Why did you decide to write your new book, “Unplugged?”
“I had so many stories I didn’t want to forget. I started dictating them into my phone. Eventually, I had enough to shape into a book. It’s not a vanity memoir—it’s a look behind the scenes. The music, the people, the moments.”
It’s wild—one minute you’re scoring horror, next minute you’re making lullabies. “ ”
Favorite chapter?
“Producing The Austin Sessions with Chris Kristofferson in ’97 was unforgettable—he’s one of the most sincere people. Same with Johnny Mathis, turning 90 and still the kindest soul.”
Anything you didn’t include?
“Two chapters. One was about the pranks my partner and I pulled in the ‘70s—my editor said people would hate me. The other was a ‘What I Like/Don’t Like’ chapter. I listed artists I wasn’t fond of. Editor said, ‘Don’t burn bridges.’ She was right.”
Any raw stories you kept in?
“There’s one about Harry Nilsson. He was a genius but could be dark. He did something at a party that nearly ended very badly for me. But I kept the story in. It’s the truth.”
What do you hope people take from the book?
“That I’m a decent guy. That it’s okay to laugh. That I stayed true to the work.”
What’s on your playlist now?
“Beatles, Beach Boys, Buddy Holly. Music from my youth brings me comfort.”
Dream collaborators?
“Elton John and James Taylor.”
What would you tell young Fred at the record store buying Elvis?
“Be patient. It’s going to work out.”

What Photographing 800+ Magazine Covers Taught Me
ARTICLE BY JAMES PATRICK, JAMES PATRICK PHOTOGRAPHY
We’re proud to share that our June 2024 issue featuring Grayson Allen—shot by James Patrick—won an ADDY Award, reaffirming PVCL’s leadership in visual storytelling.
We asked James to reflect on life behind the lens. Here’s what he shared:
I’ve reviewed a catastrophic number of photographs. In my early 20s, I was a photo editor for both a newspaper and a magazine. That’s a fancy way of saying I sat behind a blueberry iMac and sorted through thousands of images—per hour. The process was brutal. Only a fraction of a percent ever made it to print. The rest? Gone.
Who would willingly sign up for that kind of failure rate? Apparently, me. One day I thought: What if I just took the photos myself?
I had no training—just one college photo class (I got a C-minus). But 800 covers later, I’ve taken more than 80,000 images to land those 800. Early on, I would have told you it was all about technical precision. Now? I know it’s something else.
The most powerful images don’t just look good—they feel something. They hold weight. They carry emotion. The best ones aren’t flawless; they’re resonant. Safe images fade. Emotional ones stay with you.
That’s become my compass: not chasing perfection, but chasing truth. The best images don’t just fill space. They hold it.
