On the Road Again
As I sit down to write this letter, I’m on summer “break” with my boys. Since they were babies, we’ve chosen memories over monetary, tossing them in the car and hitting the open road. In fact, they know every word to: "On the Road Again."
This month’s issue is all about exploration—and to me, there’s nothing like taking the trip. It’s when we step away from the beautiful chaos of everyday life; connecting and reconnecting. Whether we’re skipping rocks, hiking, or doing something spontaneously wild, it’s in those moments that our family finds its rhythm. We’ve raised our boys to love travel—but more so, to appreciate and embrace experience with open hearts.
My best memories live in these sacred summers with our kids—and yes, I know they fly by. (Don’t remind me we only get 18; I’m set on proving that wrong.)
When my boys reminisce, it’s always about our travels—but I know it’s the little things that truly stay with them. Staying up late playing Uno in a hotel room. The oversized ice cream cone for dessert. Chasing ocean waves until the sun sets. These are the memories I hope they hold onto. We’re lucky to detach during summer and travel as a family. Growing up, this was my dream—craving a family unit that could slow down and savor the experience together.
Our cover Mark Maggiori is the epitome of exploration. The Scottsdale-based French artist (and yes, swoon-worthy cover) has a story that spans Led Zeppelin, music moguldom, and Western art now praised by Kevin Costner. You’ll also get a rare look inside Danica Patrick’s Scottsdale home. As a valued PVCL supporter, she shares the story behind her wine business and Calistoga tasting room. Craving a summer sip? California’s calling.
Our City Scene section spotlights PVCL’s annual May Women’s Issue celebration, lovingly hosted at The Italiano Scottsdale by our treasured friend, Chef Joey Maggiore. With a packed house of PVCL partners, friends, and community members, we came together to toast this powerful issue—featuring Joey’s daughter, Giuliana, as she navigates lymphoma. In her honor, generous donors contributed raffle prizes benefiting LLS, supporting Robyn Patterson’s incredible journey to becoming the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2025 Visionary of the Year.
Now, I best be getting back to my boys. I hope you enjoy this issue! Here’s to exploring all the parts of life that matter most.

COMPELLED BY LIGHT
Rusty Yates is captivated by light and all its countless nuances. For as long as he can remember, he has been mesmerized by the way light drapes itself across a landscape, dances across human skin, or casts a Vermeer-like chiaroscuro through a sunlit window.
Through a blend of traditional photography and digital painting, he manipulates both the method of capture and the image itself, pushing the boundaries of the medium. The result is work that transcends photography, evoking a distinct ambiance and emotional depth that define his signature style.

Real Talk from a Life Coach

FROM AMAZON TO AEROSMITH
I just got back from vacation, and now
I’m hit with the stress of everyday life. How do I keep that energized, inspired feeling going?
You can. That vacation feeling comes from space, presence, and doing more of what fills you up. You can bring that home by making small shifts.
How to lighten your mental load:
1. Change what you can. Look at your calendar— what’s on autopilot? Remove one thing that drains you and replace it with something that energizes you.
2. Change how you see what you can’t change. Stress often comes from our thoughts about what we “have to” do. Try this: “I have to do laundry” becomes “I get to take care of myself and my home.” Notice how your thoughts affect your energy. Little shifts in thinking create big changes in how you feel.

Maggiori MARK IN MOTION
From France to Scottsdale...rockstar roots meet cowboy canvases
ARTICLE BY NADINE BUBECK
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES PATRICK PHOTOGRAPHY
From blasting Zeppelin cassettes to painting cowboys in the desert, Mark Maggiori’s journey from France to the American West is as cinematic as his canvases. Raised far from ranch life, he now creates from his Scottsdale studio and has become a standout in contemporary Western art. His work has headlined magazines, topped $500,000 at auction, and won fans worldwide.
In this exclusive conversation, Mark retraces his path—from a teenage road trip across America to a music career, a film detour, and the moment it all clicked in a cowboy museum in Oklahoma.
We photographed Mark at Skyeview, a resortstyle rental perched atop Camelback Mountain, where his artwork lines the walls—including a striking centerpiece at the entrance. With 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and every amenity designed for rest and recharge, it was the perfect gallery-meets-sanctuary setting to bring Mark’s art—and energy—to life.
MARK, LET’S REWIND TO THE BEGINNING. YOU’RE 15, COMING FROM FRANCE, ON A ROAD TRIP ACROSS THE U.S. WITNESSING THE VAST AMERICAN LANDSCAPE UNFOLDING BEFORE YOU FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME.
We went to the Grand Canyon… Canyon de Chelly, did the whole thing. Me and my cousin were like, “Yeah, that’s cool. It’s hot.” We were 15. We wanted some beer. But we took photos. My dream is for my cousin to come and recreate that photo together— same gear, same pose, just older. Really, I was just obsessed with Vans, and determined to find the teddy bear shoes I so desperately wanted in the U.S.
DID YOU EVER TRACK THEM DOWN?
No. I collect Vans. I have one of the biggest collections of high-top Vans- even some from the 60s and 70s.
WHEN YOU GOT BACK TO FRANCE, YOU STARTED A BAND?
Yeah. I loved skateboarding and skating leads to music. On that road trip, my uncle bought us tapes from gas stations. We got Led Zeppelin. Those tapes changed everything.
I started learning guitar because of Led Zeppelin. I greatly admired the singer, Robert Plant. But his voice was untouchable. So I decided I’d be Jimmy Page instead.
YOU SEEM INCREDIBLY DRIVEN— DOES THAT COME FROM YOUR DAD, A PHILOSOPHY TEACHER?
Maybe. I regret not getting more from my dad in that way. My dad would give me one-liners like, “Freedom is not doing what you want—it’s knowing what you don’t want.” I didn’t get it then, but now I see it.
CONTINUED >
WHEN THE BAND GOT GOING, WHAT WAS IT CALLED?
Pleymo. I was the singer. We got big in France, and signed with Sony/Epic.
WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DID YOU PLAY?
Nu-metal. French Limp Bizkit. Rapped in French. Crazy shows. Huge crowds. We toured everywhere.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS THE BAND’S BREAKOUT MOMENT?
We gave our demo to a guy at a record store. He put it in the listening station. A few days later, he sold out and invited us to play. There was a line around the block. During the show, the crowd was so wild they broke the stage. That’s when I knew we were onto something.
AND YOU WERE ALSO JUGGLING ART SCHOOL...
Yes. I studied graphic design at the Académie Julian in Paris. During the week, I was in school and interning at Disney. On weekends, I was playing concerts with the band. No sleep. Total grind.
I thought I’d go into animation or concept art—maybe work at Disney. I actually did three summers as an intern with them. It was amazing.
WHEN DID YOU START DIRECTING MUSIC VIDEOS?
I started directing our own videos because I had a vision for how the band should look. Then other bands started asking me to direct for them. That led to a full career in music videos and commercials.
AND THAT’S HOW YOU MET YOUR WIFE…
Yes, on set. I noticed her immediately. Later, we did a short film together in Chloride, Arizona. A magical little town. That film was super personal.
WHEN DID YOU BEGIN TRANSITIONING FROM VIDEO TO PAINTING?
I was visiting her family in Oklahoma and her dad said, “Go check out the Cowboy Museum.” I did—and it blew my mind. I didn’t even know Western art existed like that. I stayed for three hours and left thinking, “This is what I want to do.”
SO WHAT DID YOU PAINT FIRST?
A cowboy, based on an old black-and-white photo. Then I photographed a friend on a horse and painted that. That felt more personal.
AND YOU STARTING BLOWING UP ON INSTAGRAM...
My wife made me do it. I was against it. But she said, “Trust me.” And it opened every door.
A gallery in L.A. saw my work on Instagram and invited me to bring in some pieces. I brought three. They wrote me a check for $5,000. That moment changed everything.
I still post on social myself. I write my own captions. It’s all real.
WAS THE WESTERN ART WORLD SKEPTICAL OF YOU AT FIRST?
A bit. I made some mistakes—wrong ropes, wrong hats. But I had mentors. I studied, I listened. I wasn’t trying to fake it—I wanted to honor the tradition and get it right.
WHAT’S YOUR PAINTING PROCESS LIKE TODAY?
Slower, deeper. I used to make 25 paintings a year. Now I do maybe 7 or 8. But each one means more. I want every brushstroke to count.
WHAT DRAWS YOU TO COWBOYS?
The solitude. The freedom. They represent independence, connection to the land. It’s not about romanticizing the past—it’s about spirit.
AND YOU ALSO PAINT NATIVE AMERICAN SUBJECTS.
Yes, but with care. I do deep research. I talk to people. I make sure I understand the history. It’s about respect.
WHAT’S THE MOST YOUR WORK HAS SOLD FOR?
$500,000. I still can’t believe it. But I don’t paint for money—I paint because I have something to say.
AND YOU HAVE A FAN IN KEVIN COSTNER!
Surreal. I showed him one of my works and he loved it. Later, I painted him from a photo and sent it to him. He replied, “Sir, you are a poet with a paintbrush.” That was a moment.
YOU’VE MENTIONED A BACK INJURY. HOW HAS THAT AFFECTED YOUR WORK?
I used to ride horses more, travel more. Now I have to be careful. But in a way, it forced me to slow down. I’m more intentional with how I spend my energy. I’ve learned to listen to my body.
WHAT’S LIFE LIKE DAY-TO-DAY FOR YOU IN SCOTTSDALE?
Mellow. Wake up, make coffee, see my daughter off to school. Then I paint. I like the quiet.
I love Arizona. It’s clean, calm, and good for our family. And there’s inspiration everywhere.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE FATHERHOOD AND BEING A FULL-TIME ARTIST?
I keep my schedule flexible. I want her to grow up seeing what it looks like to follow a creative path. My girls are creative, but also their own people. I’ll support them no matter what.
YOUR WIFE IS AMERICAN ARTIST AND DESIGNER
PETECIA LE FAWNHAWK. DO YOU COLLABORATE ON CREATIVE PROJECTS?
Sometimes. She has her own art practice, but we inspire each other. We have different styles, and that’s a good thing.
WHAT’S SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I’m shy. People see the image online and assume I’m super confident. I think more than I talk.
HOW DO YOU STAY GROUNDED AS YOUR CAREER GROWS?
I stay close to my family. I focus on the work. Hype comes and goes, but the work keeps me centered.
WHAT’S THE HARDEST PART OF BEING A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST?
Saying no. There are many opportunities—shows, interviews, collabs. But every “yes” takes time from painting. I’ve learned to protect my time.
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU HIT CREATIVE BLOCKS?
I go outside. I step away. I remind myself why I paint. I don’t force it. The worst thing is to paint when you’re not feeling it—it shows.
DO YOU EVER FEEL PRESSURE TO TOP YOUR LAST PIECE?
Of course. That’s part of it. But I try not to paint for praise. I paint what I feel, what I see, what I want to say.
WHAT’S ONE PAINTING THAT MEANS THE MOST TO YOU?
A portrait of my wife. It hangs in our home. It’s more than any commission or gallery piece. It reminds me why I started.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS?
The middle. The part where it’s starting to come together, but it’s not done yet. That’s where the magic happens.
WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO WHEN YOU PAINT?
Led Zeppelin, always. Pink Floyd, old-school rock. Silence is powerful too.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
Vintage markets. Searching eBay for rare Vans. Cooking with my daughter.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE FEEL WHEN THEY SEE YOUR WORK?
A sense of stillness. Connection. I want them to feel something—peace, wonder, maybe even memory.
WHAT’S YOUR DREAM PROJECT?
Maybe a film. Or an immersive gallery show—multi-sensory, storytelling through art. Something beyond the canvas.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
Still painting. Hopefully healthier. Maybe splitting time between Arizona and Europe. Spending more time with the people I love.
WHAT’S ONE LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED?
Be patient. The world moves fast, but good art takes time. Trust yourself—your voice matters.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR LEGACY TO BE?
I hope people say I cared. That I painted with truth. That I honored the West—and made space for beauty in chaos.

Beyond the track & into the vineyard, Danica Patrick welcomes us into her heart & home
Friend of PVCL Danica Patrick invited us inside her Arizona home for a candid and curated conversation just in time for those seeking a summer escape worth sipping on.
From her personal wine cabinet to her thoughts on aging, wellness, and ambition, Danica shared what’s new, what’s next, and why Calistoga is calling.
This wasn’t just an interview. It was a rare, intimate sit-down inside the home of one of the most recognizable women in sports—turned entrepreneur, vintner, and voice of unapologetic honesty. And the story wouldn’t be complete without the perspective of her collaborator and winemaker, Julien Fayard, whose old-world training and Napa expertise have helped bring her Somnium dream to life.

ARTICLE BY NADINE BUBECK | PHOTOGRAPHY
LET’S START WITH YOUR HOUSE. UPON WALKING IN, WE WERE GREETED BY MUSIC PLAYING, WINE ON DISPLAY, PLANTS EVERYWHERE...WHAT’S THE VIBE YOU WANTED TO CREATE?
Danica Patrick (DP): I want people to feel something when they walk in. I love nature, I love design, I love texture—wood, concrete, stone, brick. It’s earthy and modern, but with softness. I had fake plants at first, but someone was like, “No, you need real ones.” So now I have someone come in every week and take care of them. I fully admit I over-watered at first. Mold. Total disaster.
AND THAT WINE DISPLAY IN YOUR KITCHEN… IT’S NOT JUST FOR SHOW. DP: Definitely not. I drink wine. I love wine. And good wine deserves a good home. I built that in because I didn’t want bottles just hanging out in the fridge or random cabinets. It’s art. You walk in, the wine’s right there. Priorities.
“Elisabeth Pickle, JD is the most caring and detail-oriented attorney I’ve ever worked with—and I’ve met many. She not only explains every estate planning decision with clarity and compassion, but her work is so thorough that even the judge praised it. Her precision saved our family time, money, and heartache. I recommend her to anyone in need of a truly exceptional attorney.” – Client Testimonial
LET’S TALK ABOUT SOMNIUM. HOW DID THE IDEA EVEN HAPPEN?
DP: Okay, so it’s 2006, I’m in Napa on a trip—staying in three different hotels, wine tasting every day, dinner at French Laundry. I’m literally drinking white wine at 10 a.m. on this gorgeous knoll, looking out over the valley, thinking, “Yep. This is it. Someday, I want something like this.” Two years later, I started looking at land. I bought it in 2009. The only thing on my actual bucket list was running a marathon—which I did—and owning a vineyard kind of just found me.
YOU DIDN’T GO THE EASY ROUTE. JULIEN SAID THE PROPERTY WAS TOUGH.
DP: It was. Super steep, had just gone through a fire, and the road wasn’t even up to code. But I’ve always been drawn to things that are a little crazy. I don’t appreciate a turnkey in life. I wanted something that challenges me. That vineyard needed love—and vision.
JULIEN, WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION?
Julien Fayard (JF): Danica showed up at the cave where I was working in Coombsville. She wanted to see what building into a hillside might look like. She found me. And she was exactly who you’d expect—straightforward, no fluff, very curious. She knew what she liked and asked great questions.
DANICA, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE JULIEN?
DP: He knows his stuff. I mean, he’s from France. That’s already a good sign, right? But he also has this calm energy, and he’s not precious about it. He listens, he’s creative, and I trust his palate. We both want elegance—not just power.
JULIEN, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE WINE YOU MAKE TOGETHER?
JF: She has a refined palate. She wants depth and structure, but not heavy. The site gives us minerality and tension. Her wines are expressive, bold, but also balanced. She’s also involved—this is very much a collaboration.
YOU’VE EXPANDED THE LINE, RIGHT?
DP: Yeah, we started with the Estate Cab. Then came rosé. Then a white. Then Cab Franc. It’s grown slowly—intentionally. I love when people come to tastings and we pour five different wines, and they’re like, “Wait, I love them all.” That’s the goal.
SPEAKING OF TASTINGS… YOUR CALISTOGA TASTING ROOM IS GORGEOUS… BUT WITH ATTITUDE.
DP: Oh, it’s totally me. Crystals, plants, custom waterfall table with red and silver resin—I’m obsessed with it. I wanted it to feel like a little retreat. You come in, you open the double doors, and boom—you’re in it. And yes, we have a question bowl. It’s my hand, literally. You pull a question out. It could be “Do you believe in aliens?” (which I do), or a really inappropriate FMK scenario. It just lightens the room. Wine should not be uptight.
CONTINUED >
WHAT KIND OF WINE DRINKER ARE YOU?
DP: Seasonal. Summer is white and rosé. Winter, I go full red. But I care more about vibe than rules. I don’t believe in pairing rules. Eat what you want, drink what you love. Just please chill your red wine. If it’s warm, I’m ordering tequila.
WHAT’S YOUR WELLNESS ROUTINE NOW?
DP: Lift weights. Eat protein. Walk. That’s it. I don’t do cardio. I used to, but my body just doesn’t respond well to stress—whether that’s physical or emotional. I get body scans every few weeks to track composition, not weight. It’s all about balance and inflammation.
AND YOU’VE TURNED THAT MINDSET INTO CONTENT. LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR PODCAST.
DP: Pretty Intense is all things health, wellness, mindset, spirituality, aliens—you name it. If I’m curious about it, I bring it on. I recently had Georgia Ede on, who changed her life through diet. I’ve had Randall Carlson talking about ancient civilizations. It’s like my personal classroom, but I open the door and let people sit in.
YOU’RE ALSO LAUNCHING A DRIVING SCHOOL… HOPEFULLY IN TIME FOR MY KIDS TO TEST-DRIVE.
DP: I met a guy during Inauguration Week in D.C. at this charity dinner. I pitched him my idea—like, “What if we reimagined driver’s ed?” He was in. So we’re building it now. Using AI and VR to put new drivers in real situations—without danger. Long term, it could reduce insurance rates, collect useful data, and make roads smarter. It’s a beast. But I love building things.
WHAT ELSE IS ON YOUR PLATE?
DP: Media stuff. Wellness stuff. Maybe more product. I’m always working on something. But I’ve learned not to force it. If an idea has legs, it sticks around. I’ve learned to trust that.
JULIEN, FINAL WORD ON DANICA?
JF: She’s fearless. Focused. Very clear on her standards, and deeply curious. She pushes the wine to be better—and that’s the kind of person you want to work with.

HOW PHOTOGRAPHER SARAH L. GLABMAN REINVENTED HER LENS
Africa
Monument Valley
Sedona
For nearly two decades, Scottsdale’s Sarah L. Glabman was best known for her bold, high-glamour imagery—fitness icons striking power poses, magazine covers, billboards in Times Square. But in 2024, everything changed.
What began as a specialized lens gifted by her husband Barry as a Christmas gift became the unexpected catalyst for a new chapter. Days later, Sarah boarded a plane to South Africa with her husband and six friends, lens in hand and no clue just how transformative the journey would be.
“It was within the first couple of days of being in South Africaat Mala Mala Reserve. We encountered a mother leopard with three two-week-old cubs—an incredibly rare sighting. Our tour guide, who had been doing this at Mala Mala for over two decades, had never seen anything like it. And when HE said he’d never seen images of that quality? I knew I had to do something.”
She had no tripod, no plan—just instinct, adrenaline, and a nine-pound camera setup she balanced day after day, twice a day.
“You become a human tripod… And your shoulders pay for it later.”
Over the course of that trip, Sarah shot more than 7,000 images—lions, zebras, baboons, elephants. But the leopards remained her most unforgettable subjects.
“The mother hid her cubs the night before, then once she had them secured, she went out for the kill- an impala. She dragged the impala up a tall tree, then fetched her cubs, and carried each cub up one by one to eat. It was surreal. She was focused, but exhausted. It was raw, beautiful, and intimate.”
It was also the beginning of a shift. The woman who once made her mark blending fitness and fashion now found herself pulled in a new direction.
“That trip was a blessing in disguise. The encouragement from our guide, and my husband was my biggest cheerleader.”
Back home in Scottsdale, the desert began to look different.
“Now I notice everything... The way saguaros bloom, how light hits the ridges, even the flowers on a cactus. God’s artwork.”

Sarah’s journey didn’t stop in South Africa. She signed up with the Thriving Artist Academy, committed to refining not just her craft, but how to share it with the world.
“The Academy has helped me learn how to market my artwork, and how to treat it like a business.”
She joined a group of 17 photographers and 3 educators, starting in Sedona and finishing in Monument Valley on this journey.
“Waking up at 3:30 a.m. to go shoot before sunrise—that was new for me. You must be there before the sun to truly capture its arrival.”
In Monument Valley, the experience was more than visual—it was spiritual.
“The way the orange monuments meet the blue sky... it’s cinematic. There’s nothing else like it. Monument Valley is right up there with Namibia in terms of feeling otherworldly. But there’s a sacred stillness.”
As for the Grand Canyon?
“I’m embarrassed to admit it was my first time there. But wow—the sheer scale, the colors at sunrise, the quiet.”
Those early wake-ups, that chase for light, all brought a new kind of discipline.
“You have to be willing to sacrifice comfort and warmth for the shot. That’s when you know you love it. That’s when it becomes more than a hobby or job—it becomes a calling.”
Even so, she still keeps a sense of play.
“I walk in the desert and just shoot what feels right. I’m always looking for beauty—even if it’s right under my nose.”
Next on her list: photographing polar bears and arctic foxes in Alaska.
“I’m also doing my annual Epic Destination Shoot in the Florida Keys this August. Piers, pelicans, hidden gems.”
There’s a spiritual element that underpins all her work now.
KEEP TAILS WAGGING ALL SUMMER LONG
• Gentle, effective adjustments for pets
• Support for aging
• Improves mobility, comfort, and overall well-being
“I’m learning to slow down. I used to move fast—fashion, fitness, big energy. Now, I pause. I listen.”
Wildlife, she says, has taught her patience.
“People can take direction. Wild animals? They do what they want. You have to wait, adapt, stay aware. But sometimes they give you better than anything you could ever stage.”
Her shots of a baby leopard stumbling down a tree still stops her in her tracks.
“It had just eaten its first solid meal and was trying to figure out how to get down. It was clumsy and honest.”
Through it all, Sarah remains committed to creating work that stirs something real.
“My people shoots are deeply personal to me and my clients. My wildlife and landscape work—that’s for the world. I want the emotion to come through, always. I want the legacy to be one of goodness.”

ARTICLE BY CAREY PEÑA, EMMY-AWARD WINNING JOURNALIST
A Day with Laura Day
Intuition, Honesty, and Healing
Laura with actress Demi Moore & legendary agent Kevin Huvane
I was very curious to see Laura Day in action. I had known her for several years at the time. She’d been featured on the television station where I used to anchor the news, talking about her journey as a high-profile healer, author, and intuitive to the stars. Over the years, we kept in touch. She lives in New York, and I have wanted to visit her, but our schedules never aligned, so when I found out we would be in London at the same time, I wanted to witness her in action. After all, it’s been well documented that some of the world’s most famous people rely on her intuitive powers (more on this later).
I walked over to Saint George’s, where she was holding a workshop. The first thing I noticed was how many people came to see Laura with such hope and, in some cases, urgent need. They wanted her to provide a roadmap for their healing. This struck me as a heavy burden for one woman to have so much riding on her words. But then again, I realized, that’s what her life’s purpose is all about. It was a magical experience to see her speak to the crowd and bring everyone into a circle together, holding hands. I was there half as a journalist to observe, half as a friend to support. And also, as a human who is always on my own journey to better myself,
Fast-forward a few years. Laura’s new book, “The Prism: Seven Steps To Heal Your Past and Transform Your Future,” was about to be released, and Phoenix was one of the stops on her book tour. My friend, former TV host, Suzanne Bissett, and I were thrilled that Laura would be coming to town. Laura is the kind of person who feels like a gift to spend time with. You can see her mind working all the time. And, if you are lucky enough to have her concentrate on your story, you just want to soak it all in. She is brutally honest and straightforward, but this is what I love about her.
Laura’s life and how she became an international healer and New York Times Best-Selling Author were not easy.
“I’m from a family of suicides,” Laura told me. “And that’s in part the way our brains are structured. And it’s also a result of a very traumatic childhood. And I realized that the difference between me and my much more brilliant and talented siblings who committed suicide was this simple download that I received when I was a small child, that had the rules of the mechanics of thriving.”
Laura and Demi
Laura spoke to me about her ability to thrive and lean into resilience and how that informed her new book, “The Prism.” I asked about her reason for writing this book, and she said that she wanted to “use …tragedy to heal and to grow.”
So, how do we do that?
How do we grow from tragedy, from disappointment, from being brokenhearted, from depression, from broken dreams?
“You don’t have to drink green juices or meditate for 40 minutes a day or be grateful for all the crap that’s happened. You make a tiny change. For example, what is mine belongs to me. You practice that for one day. People who have difficulty in that area of their life and valuing themselves will see an immediate change, not just in what they notice and who they notice, and the changes they make and how they’re treated. They’ll notice an immediate change in who notices them and what opportunities come their way. I tell my students all the time, you are your magic wand. There is no magic other than that.”
You are your magic wand. Let that phrase sink in.
“This is about acting differently, not thinking differently,” she tells me. “So The Prism is my experience of the structure of a human being, and it is how we take in all the information, the energy, the experiences, the interactions that come our way and then create, refract out our life. No matter what your life has been until now, you can make a tiny change, and your whole life changes.”
While on her book tour in Phoenix, in between stops with Jennifer Hudson, Oprah, and Kelly Clarkson, we met her at the historic hotel and restaurant, Lon’s.
Built in the 1930s by cowboy artist Lon Megargee, Lon’s still holds the charm of its original adobe architecture. Laura really appreciated this, as did her husband, Stephen Schiff, screenwriter, producer, and journalist. They are a power couple, to be sure. But you would never know it. They are low-key, and when I walked in, they were just sitting by the fire, grateful to absorb the scenery and live music.

Laura & Kyle Richards
The dinner conversation turned to her new book and a few of her celebrity friends, including, most notably, Demi Moore. Laura explained that she and Demi have been friends for 40 years. She talked about the incredible person Demi is, how she’s always treated her fans with respect, and how deeply she loves her family. I asked Laura what she felt about Demi’s “comeback.” She said she doesn’t like that phrase because Demi has always been famous. She’s right. Demi is a legend. And the story of their enduring friendship is true beauty. It’s not complicated, and it’s not transactional.
One of my biggest takeaways from Laura is that she encourages people not to overcomplicate life. And not to “magicalize”. I asked her to describe how The Prism could be most helpful to people.
“What part of me is working in an old, dysfunctional way? And I can see that in my life. Am I losing opportunities? Am I ill? Am I feeling lonely? What is going on in my life that I want to change? It’ll show me where my prism isn’t working.”
As I said goodbye to Laura and Stephen at the valet outside Lon’s, she hugged me and said, “I will see you in New York.” She invited us to come and stay at her place.
Yes, I can’t wait.
There is much to learn from this brilliant woman, who encourages people not to “magicalize” their lives. However, I submit, she is magical.

Exploring the Roots of Creativity
From moss walls to fine art, this Valley trio proves creativity is a family trait
In our Explore issue, we often think of travel and discovery, but sometimes the most meaningful journeys happen at home. For Rachel Hamid and her daughters, Destiny and Renee, creativity is a shared language. Rachel leads The Viridian, her biophilic design store blending nature with interiors, while Destiny and Renee each pursue creative ventures of their own. Together, they’ve built a life rooted in beauty, intention, and expression—exploring creativity not just as a lifestyle, but as a legacy.
RACHEL HAMID, ON RAISING CREATIVITY
YOU’VE CREATED A STUNNING SPACE ROOTED IN BIOPHILIC DESIGN. HAS YOUR APPROACH TO MOTHERHOOD MIRRORED THAT SENSE OF NATURAL HARMONY AND CONNECTION?
“Trying to create an atmosphere of harmony and tranquility is possible even in a busy world. I feel like we do have the power to do this more than we realize.”
WHAT PHILOSOPHIES GUIDED YOU IN RAISING YOUR DAUGHTERS?
“We only have a short window of our life to be with our children and there is no mess that can’t be cleaned, no time spent that is wasted, no learning that is pointless. Enjoy the time! This makes for an atmosphere of joy and fosters creativity.”
HOW DID YOU NURTURE THEIR ARTISTIC AND ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRITS WHILE ALLOWING THEM SPACE TO EXPLORE?
“When younger, providing as many opportunities as possible to use their imagination. Boredom was a great inventor—I didn’t rescue them from it but rather challenged them to think of something to do. Creativity came from raw materials… not grabbing everything premade at the store. Selling art to supportive family and friends at 5 years old for a dollar helped with the entrepreneurial side.”
WERE THERE ANY ROUTINES OR RITUALS THAT YOU FEEL PLANTED THE SEEDS FOR THEIR CREATIVE PATHS?
“We allowed them to let creations stay up for a time… without the constant need to clean it all up daily. You’d be surprised how many new ideas come when they can continue the next day. Also, lots of downtime reading and time to be bored—encouraging imagination and their own fun!”
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER PARENTS?
“Strive to not cause your kids to become peer dependent. Help them to like themselves and strive for high quality in their work. Let them do challenging things. And know that starting over isn’t so bad.”
WHY INVOLVE YOUR FAMILY IN YOUR BUSINESS?
“I love the time together. It passes so fast, so I cherish it! Adaptability is key— and such a great trait to have.”
WHAT HAVE YOU MODELED FOR YOUR DAUGHTERS ABOUT LEADERSHIP AND PURPOSE?
“Find what you love and do it to the best of your ability. Not everyone is a traditional ‘go-getter,’ but whatever you do, do it well. Integrity is vital. Treat clients like friends. You are born with gifts, but never without the responsibility to share them.”
DO YOU REMEMBER REALIZING THEY HAD SOMETHING SPECIAL?
“Oh, that was easy to spot early on— but especially in the last two years since opening our studio. I’m amazed at the inspiration that comes.”
HOW DO YOU COLLABORATE?
“We all do what aligns with our strengths. Sometimes we work together on client projects. We also draw inspiration from travel, culture, and the everyday.”
WHAT DO YOU HOPE YOUR DAUGHTERS TAKE FROM THIS CHAPTER?
“That they’ll stay confident in their God-given gifts, value their work, never undervalue their time, and always keep our closeness alive.”
RENEE HAMID, ON MAKING BEAUTY PERSONAL TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
“I offer bespoke fine art originals, completely custom to each client. I’m inspired by coziness and nostalgia with a modern edge. As I find my niche, my work continues to evolve.”
GROWING UP SURROUNDED BY YOUR MOM’S DESIGN WORLD—HOW DID THAT SHAPE YOU?
“It fostered a sense of exploration and curiosity to always learn more.”
DO YOU REMEMBER YOUR FIRST TRUE CONNECTION TO ART?
“When I fell in love with the process—not just the outcome. That’s when it felt truly mine.”
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ARTISTIC VOICE?
“My artistic voice is aesthetic-based. I create beauty for its own sake—pieces that complement a space’s atmosphere. I don’t limit myself to one style.”
HOW DID YOUR PARENTS FOSTER CREATIVITY?
“They gave us hands-on experience from a young age, encouraging us to explore and hone our crafts with support and space. Without that freedom, many give up too soon. When there’s no pressure or limitations, possibilities are endless.”
WHAT ROLE DOES FAMILY PLAY NOW?
“We collaborate constantly—sharing ideas, supporting each other’s visions.”
MEMORABLE ADVICE FROM YOUR MOM?
“‘Say yes now and learn later.’ It built a can-do creative attitude that’s helped in facing challenges with confidence.”
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR ART TO OFFER PEOPLE?
“Calm and peace. I want it to be a quiet piece of solitude—something nostalgic and uncomplicated.”
DESTINY HAMID, ON ORGANIC VISION
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS.
“I’m a creator, stylist, and photographer at The Viridian Studio. I build moss art and luxury plantscapes and style interior shoots. My work is ever-evolving as I explore new materials.”
WHEN DID ART FIRST FEEL PERSONAL?
“I’ve always created, but having my photography published and moss walls installed in corporate spaces helped narrow which forms I love.”
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
“I love texture and natural materials—especially moss. It’s tactile and imperfect, and that’s what makes each piece beautiful.”
HOW DID YOUR PARENTS SUPPORT CREATIVITY?
“They exposed us to the arts early and gave us the tools and space to explore. Mistakes were learning opportunities, not failures.”
WHAT VALUES SHAPED YOUR JOURNEY?
“ Integrity, perseverance, and pride in your work—no matter how big or small. My parents modeled it daily.”
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR WORK TO EVOKE?
“I want to bring the outdoors in—and reduce stress, improve focus, and elevate well-being.”

This July, we’re celebrating exploration—not just of faraway places, but of the spaces we call home. For Danielle Hardy, founder of Scottsdale-based Urbanwalls, “exploring walls” means infusing everyday spaces with personality, meaning, and creative expression.
Here are 13 ways Danielle and Urbanwalls are helping people explore their spaces.
1. IT STARTED IN HER GARAGE
Urbanwalls began with a simple DIY project for her kids. Danielle, a graphic designer and young mom, created custom decals that felt personal and different. “Everything I saw in stores felt too permanent or too cheesy,” she says. “I wanted something that felt like us.”
2. GRAPHIC DESIGN MEETS REAL LIFE
With a background in design and print, Danielle brought technical fluency to the art of wall décor. “Understanding layout, composition, and material helped me scale ideas from a laptop to an actual wall.”
3. YOUR WALLS SHOULD FEEL LIKE YOU
Danielle believes wall design isn’t just aesthetic—it’s emotional. “Walls should reflect what makes us feel joy, calm, and connection.”
4. URBANWALLS DESIGNS FROM THE INSIDE OUT
“We build each collection around how it should make someone feel, not what’s currently trending,” she says. “It’s about emotion, not ego.”
5. 2025 WALL TRENDS WORTH NOTING:
• Faux textures like clay, limewash, and linen
• Oversized, abstract florals
• Scalloped borders/framing details
• Earth-toned, muted color palettes
• Expansive landscape murals/natural themes
• Playful shapes/asymmetrical placements
• Warm whites paired with muddy greens and terracotta tones
• Sophisticated nursery designs with vintage flair
6. PEEL-AND-STICK = CREATIVE FREEDOM
“Try it in a powder room. Around a doorframe. On a single wall. You can be bold without commitment. That’s the beauty of peeland-stick—it encourages experimentation.”
7. CUSTOM PROJECTS BRING THE VISION TO LIFE
One standout example: The Hive Fit Club in Scottsdale, where Danielle and her team created a custom mural concept for the entire 27,000-square-foot space. “They wanted a lush, modern jungle. It became a living part of their brand.”
US FEEL JOY, CALM, OR CONNECTION?”
“WE LIVE WITH OUR WALLS EVERY DAY. WHY SHOULDN’T THEY REFLECT WHAT MAKES
8. TEXTURE IS EVERYTHING
Texture is emerging as a key element in 2025 design. “It’s less about color, more about feel. Even with smooth surfaces, visual texture can create warmth and subtle drama.”
9. NOT WALLPAPER— WALL STORYTELLING
Urbanwalls is designed with intent. “These aren’t just patterns—they’re little windows into personality. They’re not generic backdrops; they’re part of your home’s character.”
10. HER FAVORITE PROJECT? HER DAUGHTER’S ROOM
“She asked for ‘all the animals,’ so we created this quirky wallpaper of framed
animal portraits. It makes her light up every time she walks in.”
11. ADVICE FOR THE BOLD (AND THE HESITANT)
If you’re nervous, start small. “A hallway, a ceiling, even a closet door. The best design moments come from unexpected places.”
12. WHY URBANWALLS ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL WALLPAPER BRAND
From thoughtful sourcing to customer-first flexibility, Urbanwalls does things differently. “We’re not here to mass-produce. We’re here to help people create artful, lasting impressions—with no damage, no stress, and no design regret.”
THE TURF TRUTH
What High-End Homeowners Are Getting Wrong
July in Arizona: lawns are crisp, sprinklers are working overtime, and cooler days feel far off. Want a flawless fall yard without the stress? Now’s the time.
Crown & Blade Turf—founded by local dads Ben Pijawka, Ben Hudson, and Austin Unger—is redefining synthetic lawns with facts over flash.
“People hear a lot of misinformation,” says Hudson. “We spend time resetting expectations. Turf can be amazing—if you know what to expect.”
Here, they break down common myths.
Myth 1: Turf is cooler than grass
“It’s not,” says Pijawka. “Grass breathes as it holds moisture, but turf can still get hot.”
However, everything is hot in the summer—pavers, pool decks, etc.
“You’re not playing outside at 115 degrees anyway,” says Hudson. “However, for ten months of the year, turf is fantastic. It looks great, holds up beautifully, and requires minimal effort.”
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH VITEL PHOTOGRAPHY
“There’s a misconception that premium turf means it stays cool,” adds Unger. “But like anything, if it’s in direct sun, it’s going to warm up like anything else.”
Myth 2: ‘Cooling tech’ solves the heat problem
Many turf systems include infill that holds
Myth 4: Price per square foot is the best way to compare turf companies
“It reduces a highly customized product to a dollar amount,” says Pijawka. “We are often asked, ‘What’s your cost per square foot?’ But that’s like asking a designer what a kitchen costs without knowing the layout, the finishes, or how it’s being used.”
moisture or blades designed to reflect heat—but the results are modest and temporary.
“These can cool turf briefly, especially right after watering—but they’re no substitute for shade or smart design,” says Hudson.
“It’s not about eliminating heat,” says Pijawka. “It’s about making turf comfortable most of the year.”
Myth 3: Turf is maintenance-free
“We hear it often: ‘We just want something we never have to think about,’” says Unger. “And turf makes life easier—but it’s not completely hands-off.”
Turf cuts out mowing and daily watering but still needs occasional brushing, rinsing in pet areas, and infill touch-ups.
“It’s like a luxury finish—low-effort, not zero-effort,” says Hudson.
Cutting corners on prep, drainage, or infill can lead to big problems later—odor, shifting, even full ripouts.
“The issues might not show up immediately,” says Unger. “But they will. We see it all the time— cheap installs that fail within two years.”
So Why Turf?
Turf is a long-term lifestyle upgrade. For highend homeowners who value year-round beauty with less upkeep, synthetic grass offers a smart, sustainable solution.
According to the EPA, a third of household water goes to outdoor use—mostly for lawns. Turf needs no irrigation, saving up to 55,000 gallons a year.
It’s also low-maintenance: no mowing, no fertilizing, no brown spots. With UV resistance and built-in drainage, modern turf stays lush year-round.
Professionally installed turf lasts 15–20 years and is now used in high-end landscapes for more than lawns—adding clean lines, design flow, and function around pools, pavers, rooftops, and more.
“Turf gives our clients control,” says Hudson. “They want their yard to look great without being tied to a maintenance crew or irrigation schedule.”
What Turf Delivers—When Done Right
“Turf today is being treated like a material—not just a grass substitute,” says Unger. “It’s being used in places where real grass can’t thrive—or where design flexibility matters most.”
Turf installs range from custom backyard putting greens and pet play zones to poolside decks, rooftop terraces, and between pavers to soften hardscapes— all adding style, function, and year-round ease.
“We’re using turf to create structure, contrast, and usability,” says Hudson.
Form, Function, and Fast Turnaround
Crown & Blade designs with purpose, tailoring each install to how the space is used. “Is it for pets? Entertaining? Full sun?” says Pijawka. “That guides everything—from turf type to infill to base.”
And unlike others, they don’t make clients wait months to see results.
“Once we finalize the design, we’re typically done in two weeks,” Hudson says. “It’s fast, clean, and built to last.”

Meet Chef Taz
21 Questions with the Executive Chef of Bourbon & Bones Chophouse | Bar
In true PVCL fashion, we play a monthly game of 21 Questions with an esteemed Valley chef. This month, we’re all about the bourbon (and the bones) with Chef Mutaz Fakhouri— better known as Chef Taz—Executive Chef of Bourbon & Bones Chophouse | Bar.
1. What’s the first food memory that lit a fire in your belly?
Growing up in a Jordanian home, I’d help my mom cook for our big family with ingredients fresh from the farm. Those bold, homemade flavors—especially her stuffed zucchini—are what first lit my love for cooking.
2. When did you know this was your calling?
At 18, I worked alongside Wolfgang Puck and learned from chefs like Eric Klein. Seeing that level of craft and discipline, I knew this was it.

Christmas in July
Trading Sandals for Sleigh Bells at The Ranch at Rock Creek
If July has you sweating, how about a little Christmas in July to cool things down? We’re taking you to a Montana winter wonderland—where snow-covered meadows, sleigh rides, and ice skating under the stars feel like something out of a dream. But this place is real. And so is the visionary who brought it to life.
Welcome to The Ranch at Rock Creek—6,600 acres of rugged, untouched wilderness just outside Philipsburg, Montana. It’s the first Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Ranch in the world, and the only Five-Star property in the state.
We visited the Ranch during the shoulder season, when the last patches of snow still stuck to the treetops and spring was beginning to stir. What made our visit unforgettable wasn’t just the setting—it was the storyteller behind it all. In an incredibly rare opportunity, we sat down with Ranch founder Jim Manley, a financier whose fairy tale journey proves some childhood dreams don’t fade—they just take time to come true.
“At 10 years old, I told my dad, ‘One day, I’m going to get a horse, a rifle, and a ranch.’ He laughed. But I never let it go.”
Jim grew up in the 1960s in a small New Jersey home with an even smaller yard. It was when cowboy shows ruled the few TV channels, and little Jim was glued to Rawhide, Bonanza , and The Virginian
“All cowboys, all the time. I just knew I was going to live that life.”
For the next twenty years, the dream stayed alive. He built a career in finance and, starting at age 33, began flying west twice a year. From Canada to Arizona, he toured more than 200 ranches, but none were quite right.
Until he found one that hadn’t hit the market yet.
“I bought it that day. It was the only one that had all ten things I was looking for.”
Jim’s checklist was exacting. He wanted to be surrounded by white-capped mountains, with a ski resort nearby. He wanted
a charming mining town close enough for guests to visit—Philipsburg checked that box. He sought a ranch at low elevation (5,000 feet max) so visitors could breathe easily, and he insisted on diverse wildlife—minus the rattlesnakes.
“I didn’t want poisonous snakes or grizzlies,” he laughs. “We’ve got wolves and mountain lions, and that’s plenty.”
He wanted a river on the property— but not a highway beside it. Too many scenic ranches were spoiled by traffic near the water. He wanted forests and meadows. A pristine valley without visible development. He wanted the entire property to be flanked by national
forest or other large parcels, so it would feel as untouched as it did in 1880. And finally—26 inches of precipitation annually. Enough for green summers and snowy winters.
“People told me I was nuts. They said those ten things don’t exist in one place. But they did. And I found it. This ranch is one in a hundred million.”
The original plan was personal. A private getaway for Jim, his family, his friends and his clients. But after a year, it was clear—the place was too special not to share.
“They’d come and say, ‘Jim, I’ve never seen anything like this. So I thought—maybe this could be something bigger.”
It wasn’t easy. The vision was bold: a fully inclusive luxury experience in the middle of the wilderness. No signing tabs at the bar. No surprise activity fees. Everything—literally everything—bundled into one price.
“There was no other place like it. People told me it wouldn’t work. That it was too expensive. But I didn’t want guests to pull out their wallet every time they wanted a whiskey.”
It took five years before the Ranch became profitable. But the vision held. And today, The Ranch at Rock Creek is a member of Relais & Châteaux, Virtuoso, and the American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts portfolio. It remains the only resort of its kind—blending authentic Montana adventure with effortless, all-inclusive luxury.
For Jim, the secret sauce is simple: people want to play
“You go to some resorts, and it’s just sitting by a pool with a drink. Not here.”
Instead, Rock Creek is an “adult playground”—for kids too. A place where guests can hike, bike, ride horses, fly fish, shoot clays, try archery, mine for sapphires, and even paintball. In the winter: snowshoeing, cross-country, ice skating, sleigh rides, and skiing at nearby Discovery with the help of an exclusive Ski Concierge.
He even built an Old West-style saloon—complete with a bowling alley, movie theater, karaoke stage, and cowboy bar—because guests need somewhere to unwind after a day of adventure.
“I didn’t want people just getting drunk at dinner. I wanted them doing something. Having fun.”
Today, Jim still visits often. All four of his children have been married at the Ranch, and when we met him, his youngest daughter’s wedding was just around the corner.
“It’s a place that brings people together. When you’re here, you’re really here. No distractions. No noise. Just connection.”
As for the name?
“I wanted something that felt elevated. We’re on Rock Creek, so it became The Ranch at Rock Creek. It tells you exactly where you are. And that you’ve arrived.”
And for those lucky enough to arrive in winter—it’s even more magical. It’s the kind of place where time slows down. Where kids—and grown-ups—still believe in wonder.
Because one man did. And he never stopped.

Where Cocktails Take Stage
SHIV MORE THAN A PRETTY
Shiv, Riot Hospitality Group’s latest concept, is equal parts supper club and spectacle. Behind the visuals is a full sensory experience—sound, flavor, and precision. Founder Ryan Hibbert and Beverage Director Lyndsi Mundy share what sets it apart.
WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE IN PHOTOS:
“You see the food and drink, but not the energy,” says Hibbert. “Our live band performs 40+ custom remixes of pop, EDM, and more.”
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
“It came from the hand-crafted culinary instrument that every chef cherishes like an extension of themselves,” Hibbert explains.
ON INGREDIENT INTEGRITY:
“We don’t use seed oils. Our steaks are seared in beef tallow with rosemary and garlic,” says Hibbert.
WHEN IT COMES TO SIPPING...
Beverage Director Lyndsi Mundy is Shiv’s drink designer. “It’s all about the music in the room, the guest, what the sip should feel like. And if it doesn’t photograph well, it doesn’t make the menu.”
MUNDY’S DRINK PHILOSOPHY:
• Trending ingredient: Foam. “It’s playful, but precise.”
• Pairing cocktails with food: “Drinks are a course of their own. We use acid and aromatics to balance richness.”
• Creating drinks for the room: “We don’t do sleepy cocktails.”
• Biggest misconception: “That it’s just about flavor. A cocktail is architecture.”

NEW! MARK MAGGIORI
Younger. Smarter. Sooner.
The average age for a facelift used to be 60. Now? It’s closer to 50—with more patients starting in their 40s to stay youthful, not reverse aging.
Younger skin = better elasticity, fuller results, and a more natural look.
A recent study found the biggest drop in perceived femininity and attractiveness for women starts at age 40 (not until 60 for men).
Today’s facelift isn’t about age. It’s about timing. Book your consultation. Stay ahead. Look like you.
