How can we achieve a peaceful family law experience?

ANSWER

Absolutely There are many ways to keep your case private and out of a courtroom in Arizona First, I can sit with opposing counsel and our respective clients in an office setting to discuss various settlement options. Often, this helps the parties to narrow the issues at hand, if not completely settle things. This method is particularly successful if both attorneys are experienced and focused on problem solving rather than creating unnecessary conflict.

If you do not think sitting in the same room as your spouse is feasible, then settlement letters can be sent between counsel and are often very productive in moving things closer to the finish line.

Another great option is mediation Even the most contentious cases have been completely resolved with the assistance of a good mediator. It is important to remember that mediators do not give legal advice, so it is imperative that you attend with an experienced family law attorney to ensure you are entering into an appropriate agreement, as final agreements reached in mediation are binding.

Civility between spouses should always be a priority to you and your counsel, as you will continue to be in each other’s lives through your children well after your dissolution is finalized.

I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list

When I was three, we moved from Philadelphia to California. My dad and dog took an airplane, while my mom drove me and my sisters cross-country. Keep in mind, there were no cell phones, no GPS, and no iPads. With paper maps and a Neil Diamond tape on repeat, my mom plotted the drive from east-to-west pit-stopping at places like Mount Rushmore and the Badlands.

I guess the love for travel is in my blood because we've been on-the-road with our sons since day one. In fact, our family theme song is "On the Road Again," and the boys are truly the best explorative entourage I could ever ask for.

As legend has it, my late grandfather developed a love for horses after one saved him during the war. I don't know if that's true, but I do know the appreciation and adoration for nature and wildlife runs deep in my soul, and the souls of our sons. That's why I'm thrilled to have a cover story on an utter icon- Mr. Ted Turner- on the legacy he's leaving for the world to enjoy. Our family feels a sense of home at Ted's Vermejo, a luxe conservation reserve. I'm honored to spotlight the media mogul and divulge Vermejo's latest exclusive experience.

Also in this issue, we scored an exclusive with Jesse James on his new TV network. Jesse isn't the rebel you think he is; in fact, he's a passionate writer and story-teller.

Oh! And Louie Vito! The snowboarding Olympian just so happens to live in Scottsdale and gave us the juice on BTS of the Summer Games in Paris. (Louie also competed on "Dancing with the Stars," but says he'll stick with boarding.)

Most of our City Scene section is dedicated to our Women's Event from May- a big thank you to The Scottsdale Resort & Spa, DJ David Leden, and Cordially. How I treasure our sacred community's immense support.

I hope this Explore Issue will inspire you to take the trip and choose making memories over monetary. We're raising wild and free spirits; little cowboys, beach bums, fearless explorers and curious adventure seekers. We aim to instill in the boys: if there's a horse, you hop on, and if there's a lake, you jump in.

In 2001, Lorrie and I decided it was time to start our own Interior Design & Home Remodeling team; so, we printed door hangers and walked neighborhoods together on the weekends to distribute them.

When not working, what do you love to do? Lorrie and I are newly empty-nesters, so we are checking National Parks off our bucket-list.

“Vermejo is a special place where the land looks much as it did 100 years ago,” says Mr. Ted Turner, the man who transformed television and one of the most influential philanthropists in the country.

Mr. Turner is the chairman of Turner Enterprises, Inc, which manages his business interests, land holdings and investments, including the oversight of two million acres across eight states- one of which is Vermejo, a nature reserve and guest ranch in northeastern New Mexico and southern Colorado.

Tailored Excursions

The world-class fishing destination is ideal for first timers to seasoned spin-casters and fly-fishers. Hook Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout, which were almost extinct prior to Vermejo’s restoration project.

In spring, elk and deer shed their old antlers. When this happens, so begins shed hunting season. It takes a keen eye, but you might just find one of these natural treasures as a souvenir.

Fall’s elk rut tour brings guests faceto-face with a bugling elk. When the bulls are fired up to breed and chasing after the cows, guides bring them in close enough that their screams will rattle your chest.

The American West is alive  among Vermejo’s range of safe and educational shooting sports through archery, rifle shooting or a wobble deck experience.

ARIZONA’S FIREWORKS LAW

As we embark on Independence Day, many anticipate a fireworks finale. But before you go bursting a sparkly spectacle, let’s walk you through your freedoms to ring in USA's birthday.

In Arizona, the only permissible fireworks you can possess as an average consumer are ground fireworks and hand-held sparklers.

A “ground firework” is as the name states: any fountain, ground spinner, or spark-emitting firework device that does not leave the ground. These fireworks are legal for use two times of the year- from June 24th through July 6th and from December 24th though January 3rd. Additionally, these must be used on private property and should only be used by responsible adults.

But let’s say you decided that ground fireworks and sparklers weren’t enough to honor America. Maybe you went across state lines and found yourself something that reminded you a little more of a screaming bald eagle. Well, your fate varies depending on where you decide to let that firework fly.

Anyone caught using an illegal aerial firework in Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, Avondale, or Tempe faces a $1,000 fine per firework launched. Scottsdale sets a minimum fine at $275.

While these fines may not be enough to deter you, the potential threat of damages caused by fireworks should be. Remember, Arizona is a desert, and we’ve already entered wildfire season. If part of your July 4th celebration causes any kind of fire, you'll be on the hook for damages, not to mention felony arson charges.

MEET THE VALLEY MAN WHO SUCCESSFULLY SUMMITED THE ULTIMATE CLIMB

An Everest Endeavor

At just over 29,032 feet, Everest’s summit has approximately one-third the air pressure that exists at sea level, significantly reducing a climber’s ability to breathe enough oxygen. However, that doesn’t stop some people from attempting the bucket list endeavor.

With that being said, the majority of those who attempt Everest don’t make it the whole way, but we connected with a Valley voyager who succeeded the summit.

Meet Kevin Cherilla, the Co-Owner at the Scottsdale-based K2 Adventure Travel and Co-Founder of the K2 Adventures Foundation. The local adventurer walked us through his Everest expedition and his impressive journey to the top.

FIRST, WHAT SPARKED YOUR LOVE FOR TRAVEL?

I didn’t have a TV until I was in high school- I was always outside. After my freshman year in college, I went to live with my uncle in Oregon for the summer. That summer changed me.

Once I moved to Arizona, I started traveling and climbing the world with a friend.

MOUNT EVEREST BECAME YOUR GOAL. HOW DID YOUR FAMILY FEEL ABOUT IT?

I got the green-light blessing from my wife- our kids were so young at the time. I also had to get permission from work, as I was a teacher. But at 38 years old, I left in April, and summited in June.

WHAT WAS TRAINING LIKE?

Three workouts a day paired with yoga, hiking, swimming, and rock climbing. Things like 50-mile bike rides in Flagstaff.

You land in Kathmandu, gather your gear, meet your guide, and meet your team- we were all from different countries.

We drove from Kathmandu into Lhasa, Tibet, and then to Base Camp. This first step took about a week.

Once at Base Camp, you set up at about 17,000 feet, and then work in stages setting up at Interim Base Camp... and then to Advanced Base Camp. At about 21,000 feet, things get serious. That’s where you put on your gear, clip into fixed lines, and start climbing. This is when you carry loads of 50-70 pounds dropping off food and oxygen bottles to prep your journey.

The back-and-forth rotation gets your gear set and helps with the altitude adjustment.

HOW DO YOU KEEP BUSY IN BASE CAMP BETWEEN ROTATIONS?

I shaved! We’d also do short day hikes and read. Our bodies needed to rest from losing weight- I lost 50 pounds.

IS THE WEATHER INSANE?

On my summit day, it was minus 51 degrees. However, I was dressed perfect.

WERE YOU EVER SCARED FOR YOUR LIFE?

Totally. On the north side, there’s an object called the “second step.” It’s an iconic spot with a ladder bolted to a rock at 28,500 feet. It’s a crazy climb like standing on a platform onto the ladder. If you look down, you’ll likely spot dead bodies.

DOES YOUR LIFE FLASH BEFORE YOUR EYES OR ARE YOU FOCUSED ON THE TASK AT HAND?

When you come across a dead body, you tell yourself not to mess up like they did. I was going to do everything in my power to do it even if I died. What a stupid concept, right?

WHAT DID YOU THINK ABOUT APPROACHING SUMMIT?

I thought about my third-grade teacher who introduced me Everest. I thought about my high school basketball coach who instilled in me hard work and dedication. I thought about my mom’s dad, our Italian heritage, and my dad’s family, all immigrants. My dad thought I was nuts for doing it, but he became my biggest cheerleader.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR SUMMIT MOMENT.

The walk to the summit was unbelievable. When I got there, I literally had the summit to my entire self – I reached it first in my group. You only spend about 10 minutes at the top to take it all in and take photos (until your camera freezes). Even though the sun was out, it was minus 40.

I cried. I was super happy. It was a relief, and I felt proud. No one could ever take that feeling away from me and no one else could have given it to me. It was earned. I carried my own stuff every step of the way. Only 10% of people who try Mount Everest reach the top.

FOR THE RECORD, YOU PROCEEDED TO VISIT EVEREST AGAIN, YES?

I never made it to the top again, but I have, in fact, assisted other people succeed three more times. Since my moment, it’s always been about giving somebody else that experience.

AND YOU’RE QUITE THE STATISTIC IN ARIZONA.

Yeah, there’s only four of us in Arizona that have ever reached the Mount Everest summit, and I’m one of them.

HOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE CHANGED YOU?

After doing this, no matter what comes my way in life, there’s nothing that will ever be that hard on me mentally or physically.

When people say that I’m wired differently, you know, I take it as a compliment.

How to train your mind, body and soul for challenging expeditions

Checking off bucket list items is rewarding, especially when bucket list items test your inner and outer strength. For many people, bucket list goals include running a marathon or trekking the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim... but what’s the truth behind making these mementos a reality?

We asked Dr. Adam Loiacono about prepping your body for pushing the limits and how to successfully accomplish such physical desires.

First off, Dr. Loiacono is all about preventing serious injury. The former Director of Rehabilitation for the Phoenix Suns now runs Loiacono Performance Therapy, offering concierge, in-home services that help people optimize performance and enhance longevity.

Dr. Loiacono says to prep for marathons or serious hiking endeavors, you must commit to the hard work. It takes several months to safely prepare your body for immense physical stress. Consistency and gradual increases in training volume are key.

There’s a science behind pushing your limits, to which Dr. Loiacono references “flow state.” As described by best-selling author Steve Kotler, flow state is a highly focused and immersive mental state in which an individual’s skill level matches the challenge of the task. When we achieve flow state, we can achieve incredible feats and push ourselves beyond unimaginable limits.

Ok, cool, but what if you’re not a pro runner or hiking enthusiast... is conquering flow state a reality?

To that, Dr. Loiacono says absolutely.

“The human body is incredibly adaptable and will grow with the stress it endures. I have witnessed athletes overcome huge challenges. People have limitless potential,” he says.

But pushing beyond our limits requires physical, mental, and emotional stress. Sure, that stress leads to growth, but we must appropriately provide the right amount of stress with the right amount of recovery to grow our strength.

Balance stress and recovery well, and you’ll achieve growth.

Balance them incorrectly, and you’ll get injured.

For newbies seeking a physical challenge, Dr. Loiacono suggests approaching your endeavor like it’s a retirement plan. To achieve a retirement savings goal, we make regular deposits, leverage the interest rates, and eventually our small deposits turn into large gains.

Peripherally, our muscles may be too tired. Prepare appropriately, fuel adequately, and hydrate effectively to overcome exhaustion.

Since we’re feeling the Arizona heat, thought to cool things down with some fresh powder, manifesting a wintery chill.

As we embark on the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, we connected with a Valley Olympian, Louie Vito, known for shredding the gnar and representing the United States as a Scottsdalebased snowboarder.

Vito is a pro snowboarder, actor, Olympian, 6 Times X Games medalist, “Dancing with the Stars” contestant, model, two-time Dew Tour Cup Champion, Grand Prix Tour Champion, and the CW Network’s Most Awesome Athlete. Impressive resume, right?

We scored an exclusive with the esteemed athlete for an inside scoop into the Olympics, along with sharing his inspirational backstory.

FIRST, WHEN DID YOU START SNOWBOARDING?

Growing up in Ohio, I started snowboarding when I was 5 years old. There was a small resort near my house with a vertical drop of just 290 feet. I started with skiing, but when my dad and I noticed people snowboarding, we decided to give it a try. From that moment, we were hooked. Back then, snowboarding wasn’t what it is today. It wasn’t even an Olympic sport.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BOARDING?

There aren’t any rules. There isn’t a syllabus to follow like other sports. You can ride the park, ride the groomers, and ride powder- whatever you want. Two people could do the same trick, with the same grab, and make it look completely different. You can add your own style and flavor to everything you do.

AT ONE POINT DID YOU HAVE THE “AH-HA” MOMENT YOU WERE OLYMPICS-BOUND?

The realization hit me during my 8th grade year when I attended Stratton Mountain School in Vermont, a snowboard-focused boarding school.

In 2002, a classmate invited me and my dad to the Salt Lake City Olympics, where we watched the halfpipe event. That year, the USA swept the podium, with Ross Powers winning gold. Ross was a graduate of Stratton Mountain School and was coached by the same person who coached me. Later that year, I won the USASA Nationals in my age group. The combination of these experiences made me realize that competing in the Olympics could be a realistic goal.

WHAT’S IT LIKE PREPARING FOR THE OLYMPICS?

It’s like any other year, but with more hype and pressure. The summer before an Olympic year, snowboarding typically sees significant progression. You always want to be at the forefront of that, pushing yourself to master new tricks. However, you aim to stay safe, as learning new tricks comes with a high risk of taking hard slams.

AT 21 YEARS OLD IN 2010, YOU PARTOOK IN YOUR FIRST OLYMPICS IN VANCOUVER. HOW DID THAT FEEL?

I felt confident at my first Olympics.

The fall leading up to the Games, I competed on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.” Anyone who saw the show can imagine how far that experience stretched my comfort zone. I wore outfits I wouldn’t consider for Halloween, performed dances I wasn’t confident in,

tried to please judges whose expectations I didn’t fully understand, all while in front of a live audience and millions of viewers. When I returned to snowboarding, it was a relief. I was back in my comfort zone, wearing what I wanted, doing tricks I loved, and understanding exactly what the judges were looking for.

WHAT GOES THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN IT’S YOUR TURN IN THE OLYMPICS?

I tell myself “Let’s do this” and go into autopilot. It becomes your precious moment to show the world what you can do.

I listen to the same song all season for my contest runs: “Pressure” by Machine Gun Kelly. With noise-cancelling headphones, there’s no outside noise. When it’s my time to drop in, I go to my starting spot, tighten my bindings, make the sign of the cross, take a deep breath, say something positive to myself, and go. Once I’m in the halfpipe, I don’t hear anything until my last trick. Then I might hear my music again. While riding, it’s completely silent.

WHAT DID YOU PLACE IN YOUR FIRST OLYMPICS?

I finished 5th. It stung, but as we say, “sometimes you get the elevator, sometimes you get the shaft.”

YOU ALSO COMPETED IN THE BEIJING, CHINA OLYMPICS. HOW DID THE EXPERIENCE OF YOUR FIRST OLYMPICS PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR SECOND?

Because of COVID, it wasn’t as enriching because it was very much fly in, practice, compete, and leave. There, I finished 13th being bumped out of contention for a spot in the finals.

HOW DOES IT FEEL BEING AN OLYMPIAN?

It’s remarkable. I came from Ohio with no mountains. Going from that to competing in the halfpipe at the Olympics is surreal. I am blessed.

Witnessing all the nations coming together is awesome. I loved the atmosphere, the fans, and the opportunity to showcase our sport.

WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING THING ABOUT COMPETING IN THE OLYMPICS?

The whole hoopla - constant security checks, endless bus rides, and having your pass checked every few steps.

LOOKING BACK, WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IN YOUR BOARDING CAREER?

Attending my inaugural X-Games, clinching my first X-Games victory, and participating in the Olympics.

FAVORITE SNOWBOARDING DESTINATION.

Tough question. The enjoyment hinges on the company you’re with and the weather conditions. Some of my most memorable boarding days have been on small hills, while I’ve had less-than-stellar experiences on top-tier mountains with terrible weather. Personally, I love riding in Japan and at Snowbird in Utah.

WHAT DO YOU EAT FOR BREAKFAST ON COMPETITION DAYS?

A few eggs and oatmeal.

So much happens in the years leading up to the competition, yet viewers only witness the final day. Did they juggle a 9-5 job to support their Olympic dream? Did they battle injuries? Were they the underdog who defied all odds? There’s a wealth of untold stories behind every Olympian’s journey.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL THE ATHLETES COMPETING THIS YEAR?

You’ve invested the effort, made the sacrifices, and now it’s your time to shine and deliver an unforgettable performance.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUMMER OLYMPIC SPORT TO WATCH?

With my dad being a wrestler and coach, I’ve always enjoyed watching wrestling. I’m also a member of Team Toyota for 13+ years, so I support my teammates by watching any event they compete in.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?

I’m focused on the next Olympics in 2026. I’m putting in relentless effort both on and off the snow. Despite having enjoyed a professional career spanning 20+ years, the grind continues.

HOW’S LIFE AS A NEWLYWED?

Amazing. My wife, Hailey Ostrom, is my best friend and I am so lucky to be able to spend the rest of my life with her.

FAVE VALLEY HOT SPOTS?

We frequent Etta, Frank and Lupe’s, and Mad Greens. I don’t go out as often as I used to, but I’ve had good times at Whiskey Row.

I value being a strong male role model for kids. It’s important to positively represent myself and my family, but also be a solid ambassador for the sport of snowboarding. I talk with kids I meet on the mountain and hope they feel comfortable approaching me for advice.

Through September, enjoy the area’s free outdoor concert series, in addition to concerts at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater. The Bravo! However, Jesse has a core that might surprise you. He’s passionate, works hard, and doesn’t beat around the bush. In fact, Jesse is proud to announce his latest endeavor: launching Outlaw TV.

WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND OUTLAW TV?

I’ve done some of the highest rated shows in the history of Discovery Network, History Channel and FOX. People have seen me on TV, but they often don’t realize the planning and production process; I’ve always craved a platform of my own to exercise my full potential. I dig the production side; I want to tell stories and show people stuff they’ve never seen in a way they’ve never seen it.

I feel like I started the whole reality TV show craze 25 years ago, and now “reality” has morphed into often fake and scripted. Therefore, I don’t have a place on an

existing network to do what I want to do, in the fullest capacity. I pride myself on never staging anything.

I’ve had many show ideas in my back pocket for a decade. Through Outlaw TV, I can move forward with the ideas.

HOW WILL OUTLAW TV BE DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU’VE DONE OR WHAT ALREADY EXISTS?

Networks think that after every commercial, they have to recap what you just watched. It chews into time and production.

Our philosophy is to let people see a story unfold naturally. It’s a style we at Outlaw are keen on because we’ve never been allowed to do it. We don’t want to dumb down the viewing experience.

We’re not controlled by advertisers; we’re controlled by viewers. People pay for the on-demand streaming service so we can show them whatever we want. Members will feel part of something special, and I think that’s what’s currently missing among social and TV.

The doors are now open. I don’t have to control what I say or what I do.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR CONTENT.

With “American Craftsmen,” for example, we’re going out in the field and showing skilled craftsmen- people that work with their hands. With cliché reality, producers need to vet participants to ensure they’re good TV. With us, it’s the opposite: people that work with their hands often have no interest in being on TV; in fact, I talk them into it. You can’t fake a skill.

Another story we’re telling is at the Huntsville Prison. Inside the Prison, there’s a Walls Unit- a full metalworking facility- where they do metal work for Texas school districts. The Walls Unit also houses death row inmates, so we’re hoping to get inside and show what they do. And then we’re going to spotlight underwater welders- kind of like scuba. Different and interesting stuff. We need to get back to walking the line again. Everyone’s too hypersensitive.

The pistols we create have three-year waitlists. They’re made from Damascus steel, a precious metal with a solid gold front sight. It takes me a year to make the material for one gun. The process is long and brutal. They’re collectibles; unreal, accurate, awesome, and engraved.

Yeah, we still do a few bikes a year; I have four all copper bikes going for customers now. And our car shop is also busy.

With Bishop, my baby, I’m a different dad than I was for my older kids. Back then, I didn’t know what I was doing; I was just starting my business. I wasn’t a bad dad, and wasn’t a non-present dad, but I didn’t realize how much I missed.

Now, with Bishop, I understand a better balance. But that comes with age, experience, and perspective. I’m 55 now.

I hated it. Metal Shop saved me. My teacher, Mr. Rosa, gave me immense attention. I would take everybody’s welding test for them for $10.

I had one English teacher, Miss McLean- a total pill- but it was her who pushed me to write. I stayed in contact with her throughout the years until she passed. She’s like: you have all this angry stuff going on inside you—write it down.

I also loved playing football. I hate being one of those older dudes talking about his football days, but it was such a big part of my life. It helped make up for the absence of my mom—she left me with my dad when I was super young. I was raised by my dad and godfather, Barry from “Storage Wars.”

The most traumatic part of my childhood- and lifewas losing my nana when I was 12. She was the one person that loved and protected me.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

You can have a big house, fancy cars, and fame, but success is self-value. Knowing that you can do something and do it in a way that nobody in the world can do.

Everything Old Is New Again ...Including Your Skin

The earliest descriptions of chemical peels date back about 4,000 years ago. The Egyptians used the lactic acid in soured milk to exfoliate and soften the skin. The ancient Greeks got in the beauty game by using glycolic acid in aged wines. Every century since has added to the armamentarium of chemical exfoliation and rejuvenation.

Phenol, also called carboxylic acid, was first described in the 1800s to improve wrinkles and skin texture. It was subsequently combined with croton oil, a tree seed native to Indonesia that penetrated deeper layers of the skin to provide a more powerful rejuvenating effect. However, this older version of the croton oil-phenol peel used relatively high concentrations of phenol, which often resulted in hypopigmentation or deep whitening of the skin.

In modern day, we understand the main peeling agent is the croton oil, which reduces the amount of phenol used. This change has largely removed the risk of hypopigmentation.

When performed by an experienced physician, this peel provides an unparalleled rejuvenation of the skin. Perioral lines/wrinkles are often erased completely. Skin texture and tone are improved. For some patients, it can completely get rid of persistent melasma. It also reverses long-standing sun damage, including pre-cancerous lesions.

Chemical peels are categorized by their depth of skin penetration: superficial, medium, and deep, each targeting different skin concerns and requiring varying recovery times.

Prior to any chemical peel, the skin must be prepared with products like retinoids or hydroquinone for a few weeks to enhance results and decrease complications.
