Ok, so I’ve started this letter four times now. Do I talk about my amazing mom, Ann? My wonderful sister, Deborah? My partner-in-crime daughter, Hailey? My best friend, Cally? (Hi, everyone!) Do I talk about the women in this issue?
The problem is, it’s our Women’s Issue. And as I think about all the amazing women in my life—both family and friends, as well as women I was lucky enough to get to know as I interviewed them for this issue—there are just so many that I’m grateful for that I don’t know where to begin. Literally. (Hello, take five!)
And that actually sums up this entire issue.
Our annual Women’s Issue is, in my eyes, one of the most difficult issues to plan. There are just so many amazing women in our community, and we’d love to profile them all. Honestly, we could dedicate hundreds of pages to all of you if we had the space! And of course, there are so many interesting stories that relate to women, as well.
But each year we have a limited number of pages, so we try to pick stories that will speak to you.
From women making a difference to girlfriend getaways, we hope you are inspired.
Let’s help each other succeed, let’s be there for each other through life’s ups and downs, and yes, let’s meet up for a happy hour, because spending time with friends is good for the soul.
Here’s to celebrating women—who you are, who you are helping, and who is helping you. You’re amazing.
Yours,

I dedicate this letter to all the ladies out there. This one’s for you!
Let’s face it, women are nothing short of amazing.
As I sat down to write this, I began to reflect on just how grateful I am for all the women in my life. They are all such a gift to me! I am all about women’s empowerment and feel strongly that women need support from women more than anything else. Inclusion, acceptance, love, and encouragement is such an important piece to all that women contribute to this world.
As a little girl, I was fortunate enough to have a loving, supportive, and encouraging mom. She always made me feel like I could achieve anything I could dream up. I have two older sisters who have both served as role models and examples for me, which has most certainly helped me on my path, as well!
Women play many roles in life. I am … a daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, friend, colleague, business owner, and entrepreneur. In each of these roles, I feel tremendous gratitude toward the women in my life who have helped shape and influence my choices to be happy, loving, gracious, intentional, confident, fun, silly, compassionate, honest, open, humble, and kind.
I owe so much of my approach to life to the women I surround myself with. There is nothing better than a solid foundation of friends and family who are your consistent cheerleaders!
For that, I am humbled and grateful. Thank you, ladies, for loving each other so much!
Be grateful, be kind, and live well,
Tammy Fellows Owner/PublisherSarah Benken Foushee is all about what she describes as “lift and rise.” Her goal is to create a global community that helps women lift and rise—essentially, helping ambitious women succeed. She calls this community KNOW.
Fourteen years ago, Benken Foushee was living in Raleigh, North Carolina, when she launched a concierge business called Lifestyle Management Co. She grew that business and scaled it across the country, with several locations and licensee owners. She also began a management company to oversee the locations. She was juggling a successful career, a family, and friends.
The former accountant—she’d left the field after her daughter was born—was busy and social.
Then, seven years ago, she moved to the Valley to join her husband, who had moved here four years prior for law school. She had stayed behind with their two children so that their son could finish high school.
Benken Foushee arrived with the idea that she would open a new West Coast office of Lifestyle Management Co.
“But when I moved here, I realized that, essentially, I was burnt out,” she says.
Couple that with the fact that it was an entirely new location, and she realized she wanted a change.
“I didn’t know anyone when I moved here—I didn’t know a soul except for my husband,” she says. “When I moved my family here, it was like, where do I go? Who are my people? I’m coming here as a founder/CEO of a business … where do I plug in? Do I start networking?”
And that, Benken Foushee says, was the catalyst for KNOW.
“I built my company now—KNOW—out of the desire to create community and to bring awareness to the dynamic women here in the Valley,” she explains.
She launched KNOW in 2017, later selling Lifestyle Management Co. in late 2022.
“I basically came up with the concept of this need to spotlight and celebrate women in the Valley who are doing amazing things,” she explains. “They are doing things like disrupting their industries, breaking ground, and building their communities. … I went into every type of environment to meet people and met so many amazing women here, but we had to find a way to bring women to the light.
“It was all about helping introduce our community to the women who are really building and growing it. [It was] showcasing these women.”
Benken Foushee decided to create the first KNOW book, to highlight some of the amazing females she had met.
Published in 2018, it showcased 135 women chosen after a nomination process, all of whom were interviewed and vetted by Benken Foushee to ensure they fit what she called the “KNOW profile.”
Since then, the company has evolved, becoming a force not only locally but also in other states, and expanding from just the book to a community.
“We were, essentially, bringing forth these women who are incredible, and who really want to support the next generation of women leaders,” she says. “But also, we’re understanding the struggles of what it’s like to be alone at the top.
“That’s why we ultimately built a community around those women, because we thought, ‘They’re so amazing on their own, what happens when we put them all together in the room?’”
KNOW began to include events, such as launch parties as each book was released, and other get-togethers.
Benken Foushee watched as friendships formed, jobs were filled, and companies launched as the women connected.
Almost immediately, women in other cities began to reach out wanting KNOW in their locations. By the end of its first year as an organization, there were chapters in five other markets, and five other publications.
Today there are KNOW events almost monthly throughout the Valley, as well as an annual summit. Both members and nonmembers can attend.
There are meetups and other opportunities to connect, in addition to larger KNOW events. There are membership levels and opportunities, articles, a podcast, and more.
There is also KNOW Cares, a nonprofit formed to raise funds for women supporting women’s grassroots organizations.
“We do a lot of leadership grant funding,” Benken Foushee shares.
And, additional KNOW locations are on the horizon.
“We provide connections and visibility, and those are the only two things I believe you need to get to the next level,” Benken Foushee says. “What I do is essentially curate the space for goodness. I feel like that is such a perfect place for me. I literally just help women.”

This month, we honor the women who seem to do it all. Read on to learn about four local ladies who are making their mark.
Longtime colleagues and friends Vanessa Garcia and Stacey Rouse are doing their part to help with the ongoing supply chain issues by making sure that employers in the professional services industries (including food services) have access to the best staff possible. They do this through their business, Performant Scout, a boutique executive search firm.
The dynamic duo founded Performant Scout in 2015.
“Looking back at the trials and tribulations of that first year, it was a humbling experience becoming a new mom and launching a company at the same time,” says Garcia. “I’ve started to embrace others’ acknowledgment that I truly did have two babies that year, and it brings such a unique sense of accomplishment.”
Since then, Performant Scout has grown to an all-woman team of talented professionals who help staff top companies.
“I know we feel a similar sense of accomplishment as professional women at a time where we are both navigating so many roles in life,” Rouse says.
“Stacey and I care deeply about what we do every day,” Garcia adds. “We care about each other, our team, our clients, and our candidates.”
Partners and Co-founders of Performant ScoutChristina Spicer is co-CEO of Girl Scouts–Arizona Cactus-Pine Council (GSACPC), named to the position after serving as interim co-CEO since 2021. She has been a tireless leader in the nonprofit sector for two decades.
“My passion truly comes from my upbringing,” Spicer says. “It is my purpose to be able to serve girls and women in this community. As a mom of two, I pray that there are incredible organizations that my kids are part of that will allow them to know that it’s not just their family that loves them, but a community that loves them.”
With GSACPC since 2014, Spicer is passionate about her work and has helped raise millions of dollars for the nonprofit.
“Girl Scouts is the mothership,” she says. “It is all the incredible opportunities to watch girls discover self, connect with others, take action in their communities, watch them develop confidence, and be surrounded by a sisterhood that will allow them to feel a sense of belonging.”
She adds that the number one piece of advice she would give to working moms is to have time to truly enjoy their kids.
“There is so much in the day-to-day logistics to check off the list of ensuring they’re cared for, but our kids can bring so much joy into our lives that create laughter, fun, and amazement,” Spicer explains. “So in the busyness of life, take time to find those incredible moments of joy and let that hit your soul because it’s pretty spectacular when that happens.”

“I have been in the beauty business for over 20 years. I love the people I meet every day, and most of all I love the close connections that I have with most of my clients,” says Sydney Goldstein, owner of Sydney G Salon. “I love to make someone feel at ease and learn to let go and feel beautiful from the inside out.”
Goldstein began in the beauty business in Los Angeles, working in the entertainment industry. She moved to the Phoenix area for a quieter life and to raise a family. Once here, she trained and specialized first in eyelash extensions and perfected her must-see makeup artistry.
“I had always rented a small space in salons around the neighborhood, but it was never mine,” she explains. “I wanted to do what I had envisioned.”
Once a space opened, however, she swooped in and founded Sydney G Salon, which offers not only makeup but also hair services, and retail items such as top-of-the-line beauty products and clothing.
“I enjoy connecting people to each other,” Goldstein says. “I feel I have introduced people to their best friends in the salon. The salon is a very safe space to come in and just relax and laugh. Even if you don’t have an appointment, we like when people just pop in to say hi.”
In addition to creating a welcoming space at Sydney G Salon, Goldstein also supports the local community through donation baskets to various charities.
Overall, she emphasizes the vibe that Sydney G Salon is a place for all local women.
“Coming to the salon feels like you are getting ready at your best friend’s place with all your friends,” she says. “Everyone is welcome and there’s no intimidating vibe.”
“I love to make someone feel at ease and learn to let go and feel beautiful from the inside out.”

Kimberly Weston is a singer-songwriter, violinist, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and poet. Her journey through life has been an inspiring one, filled with personal and professional challenges that have helped shape her into the multi-talented artist that she is today.
Weston has always been passionate about music, and she began writing songs and poetry at a young age. Her talent for songwriting led her to her music career today, where she shares her music with the world. In fact, she has become a well-known presence in the event music space since starting her business in 2017.
Alongside collaborations with jazz and corporate bands, Weston’s Good Vibes Only trio is hugely popular. As for her original music, listeners can find that anywhere music can be streamed, such as on iTunes and Spotify.
The fourth-generation Arizonian dazzles audiences with her soulful vocal stylings, which exude sincerity and emotion. She sold out The Nash Jazz Club in January, where she showcased her original songs, and also performed at the Chandler Jazz Festival, Mesa Jazz Festival, and Sun & Sounds Sunday concerts in Scottsdale.
Her work often reflects a union of Latin and bossa rhythms that expertly dance between jazz and pop, while her lyrics speak to the themes of love, loss, and redemption.
In addition to her work as a musician, Weston runs Wedding Music by Kimberly, where she provides music for weddings and other special events.
This summer, she’s taking her band to France to perform at a wedding of a high-profile client, and now expects to spend summers working there moving forward. Weston has a stellar reputation among elite wedding planners and clients.
Weston also focuses much of her efforts on the nonprofit arena. One of her most notable philanthropic works is her haunting song “The Lonely Miles,” which she wrote to raise awareness for the plight of homelessness and addiction. The song is a beautiful and emotional tribute to those who are less fortunate. Weston says she is seeking partnerships through this song to help chosen charities.
She also is active with the Arizona Foundation for Women and provided live music for their annual charity event in February.
“I love that I can use my career to support events that need live music but also have a good cause,”
she says. “I feel like you’ve made it when you work with clients you want to work with.”
As if she wasn’t busy enough, she also shares her poetry and other creative writings with her fans on her poetry website (ForLoveAndOtherMelodies. com). If the poem has a hook, she’ll turn it into lyrics and release a song.
Weston is also the mother of two children—her daughter will attend Pepperdine University next year, and her son is a talented golfer.
She says that her experiences as a young mother have given her a unique perspective on life, and a dedication to succeed and pursue what she loves.
This year, Weston will release two vinyl records. The first is a collection of her early songs, while the second is more of a singer-songwriter blend, showcasing her versatility as an artist. In terms of genre, she is still very genre-bending, releasing what she feels is most important for the world to hear at that moment, or most important for her to write at that moment.
As for the future, even though she’s been incredibly successful on her own, she is also open to working with a label or other financial backing.
For now, Weston says she embraces being a onewoman show, on the stage as an artist and in business as an entrepreneur.
“It’s so exciting to have full autonomy in what my days look like,” she says. “And it is healing for me to sing. Just expressing oneself is healing in and of itself. It’s very cathartic. And I hope when audiences hear it, they find love and light the same way, too.”
